Our take on the Metra AIP-USB35MM-36 by Crutchfield's Dave Delamere
Handy cable for home or car
This Metra cable charges your iPad®, iPhone, iPod, while providing a stereo connection to your audio gear. One end features a 30-pin connector that attaches to the bottom of your compatible iPhone, iPod, or iPad, and the other end splits into a 1/8” (3.5mm) stereo audio plug and a standard USB connector.
Once your Apple device is connected, you simply plug the miniplug connector into a home stereo, portable audio system, powered speaker system, or your car stereo's aux input to check out your favorite music. You can then plug the USB connector into a computer, USB wall charger, or the USB port on your audio gear to charge your iOS® device while you listen. The dock connector sends line-level audio out from your Apple® device, giving you better sound quality than the headphone jack output.

iPod 3.5mm/USB Interface Cable: The AIP-USB35MM-36 cable lets you get high-quality line out audio from the dock connector of your iPod/iPhone/iPad, while charging. One end has an Apple 30-pin connector that attaches to the dock-connector on the bottom of your iPod/iPhone/iPad, and the other end splits into a 3.5mm stereo audio plug and a standard USB (type-A) connector. Plug the 3.5mm stereo audio connector into your home, portable, or car audio component's Aux input to listen to music stored on your Apple device or music apps streamed to the device. Plug the cable's USB connector into a computer or wall charger (sold separately) to charge your compatible Apple device. The 3.5mm connector handles audio transfer, while the USB connector handles charging. This cable does not support metadata transfer or control.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset your component and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.
