About the Metra VT-GMRC-01 Wiring Interface

Robert Ferency-Viars
Problem: Installing an aftermarket receiver in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings.

Problem: Installing an aftermarket receiver in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings.

Solution: Metra's VT-GMRC-01 GM Class II Data Bus Interface lets you replace the factory receiver in these vehicles and keep the door chime and all audible safety warnings.

Hook the VT-GMRC-01 to your aftermarket radio, mount the module in a location where the chime can be heard, and plug it into the existing factory plug. Get the great sound you want, and keep all important safety features intact. The VT-GMRC-01 will not work with OnStar equipped vehicles. 1-year warranty.

Important Note: Because your vehicle is factory-equipped with a special sound system, you will need to purchase this VT-GMRC-01 interface in order to keep your factory door chime (needed to keep audible safety warnings functioning) while providing a switched 12-volt power source for your new radio. If you do not use a compatible interface when you replace your factory radio, you will disable the audible warning system in your vehicle. Crutchfield cannot provide a free wiring harness for your vehicle, and we strongly recommend that you use the recommended interface when replacing this vehicle's factory radio. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Retained Features: The GMRC-01 provides +12-volt accessory output, retains warning chimes, and retains R.A.P. (retained accessory power).

  • +12V Accessory Output: In many GM vehicles, there is no 12-volt accessory wire in the factory harness, which requires the installer to run an accessory wire to the fuse box or underneath the steering column when installing an aftermarket radio. The GMRC-01 is designed to provide a 12-volt/10-amp switched accessory output (red wire).
  • Warning Chimes: The GMRC-01 retains factory warning chimes through the use of an on-board speaker.
  • Retained Accessory Power (R.A.P.):  The ignition power source of most GM vehicles keeps the radio on until one of the doors is opened. This feature is called the R.A.P. (retained accessory power). The GMRC-01 is designed to retain this feature.

10-Pin to 24-Pin Harness: The wiring harness has a white 10-pin female connector (4 pins present) on one end and a gray 24-pin male connector (14 pins present) on the other end. The 10-pin connector plugs into the GMRC-01 and the 24-pin connector interfaces with the existing factory plug. The harness also includes 14 bare wires that will need to be hardwired to your new aftermarket radio's harness.

Q
Will this work in my 2004 chevy silverado 2500hd with the 8.1? My truck does not have steering wheel controls, and doesn't have onstar or Bose. It has digital temperature controls if that matters for anything

I am not 100% if it will work but it should. You just have to connect to radio and then a power ground and signal wire if I recall, been a little while since I installed to remember exactly what it took. Best of luck to you, BTW great truck wish 8.1 was still made.

Zeb I installed this kit with a Kenwood system in my 2006 Chevy Colorado Crew cab 3.5 l about a year ago and it works fine. I recommend cutting the trace for the chime to have a lower volume since it was rather loud before that. The only thing I noticed and I am not sure if this is because of this kit or the Kenwood but my key less entry is sometimes slow to allow me to lock the doors when exiting the car. This it is little concern to me since I prefer to use the lock button when exiting my vehicle. Like you I do not have Onstar or steering wheel controls.

It sounds like it is the right option for you.

I don't think you will need this for your truck. It is meant to allow the door chime and warnings that come through the stereo if you have the on star system. Hope this helps.

It works in my 1500. This is the second one of the buzzers I've had. The first one died. I replaced it when I upgraded to my present receiver. New one has been fine over a year now. Be careful not to pull you a/c lines tight and double check that their plugs are tight and straight just before you close it up. GMC for 2004 has an issue with the a/c changing to heat randomly. They say it's these connections. It's really grease dripping on the control servo but there could be more then one problem. This has plaged General Motors on a few models for several years right in that time frame.
terry  Jun 17, 2014
A
It should work fine because it hooks up to the back of the head unit. In my 2003 chevy silverado 2500hd the key reminder beep was installed in the factory radio.

I'm not positive but I would guess no. My 2005 Silverado 1500 does have steering wheel controls. I would speak to a Crutchfield representative to make sure though.

Q
I just need to know if the radio will work without it? It's for a vehicle in Thailand and it does not have any bells or warning chimes from the factory. The description though mentions something about supplying 12v for the radio which is why I am asking. This is for the American equivalent of a 2008 Chevy Colorado / 2008 isuzu i370

A
Unfortunately we can't answer specifics about vehicles that are sold overseas (as the wiring can be quite different from country to country). This harness does make a connection for 12v ignition in the American version of the Chevy Colorado.

Q
Will I be able to retain my factory steering wheel controls using this?
woody  Feb 05, 2014
1 answer
A
The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Originally I had just the installed 2 way speakers and now I have 1 fosgate p3 10" woofer with jl 300 mono and everything operates the same.

I installed this on a 2004 Chevy Silverado. The wires on the harness solder into the wires from stereo,as well as about three wires from the door chime. Then just plug into your old wire plug from your car to your new harness you just soldered onto your stereo stereo. They are all color coded and makes it easy, I did not use an additional amp, but I think the amp plugs into the stereo by RCA cables, so it would not make a difference. One more word of advise, wrap the new door chime in bubble wrap before placing in dash to stop any rattling noise while driving. Lots of videos on youtube! Good luck!
john  Dec 27, 2013

Since it's wired directly to your factory harness, it shouldn't be a problem.

I was installing on an unamplified system, but it did have the wire to integrate the remote amp power control from the aftermarket stereo to the factory harness. I assume it would probably work...
