Our take on the Metra GMRC-04 Wiring Interface

Problem: Installing an aftermarket receiver in some 2000-up General Motors vehicles means losing audible safety warnings.

Problem: Installing an aftermarket receiver in some 2000-up General Motors vehicles means losing audible safety warnings.

Solution: Metra's GMRC-04 GM data bus interface lets you replace the factory receiver in these vehicles while keeping the door chime and audible safety warnings. Hook the GMRC-04 to your aftermarket radio, mount the module, and plug it into the existing factory plug. Get the great sound you want, and keep all important safety features intact.

Also, once you turn off the ignition in these GM vehicles, the radio continues to play until you open the door. This interface maintains that function with your new aftermarket radio. This interface is compatible with select 2000-up GM vehicles. If you haven't done so already, please enter your vehicle information or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to find out if this item is compatible with your vehicle. Warranty: 1 year.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

Good but basic

Brian from New Richmond, WI on 1/21/2017

2003 Pontiac Bonneville
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great on a 2003 Bonneville if you have a standard OEM stereo without steering wheel controls or an external amp. The included instructions were clear and precise, the only quibble I have is it is rather big for a simple chime. You have to remember that this is just a basic unit, if you have an external amp or steering wheel controls this unit will only send power to them, it does not have the extra wiring needed to send/receive control signals. If you are missing the instructions you can download them from the company website.

Pros: Simple, easy to install, concise instructions.

Cons: A bit large.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good product and easy to follwo instructions. I had a question on the wiring and called in but the tech could not help me. After a few trial and errors, I was able to figure it out.

Pros: Fast and accurate delivery, right parts for the job

Cons: did not match 100% of the factory controls on the steering wheel but most of the functions worked perfectly.

Oldsmobile Aurora & Pontiac Bonneville use GMOS-09

Brian from leander, TX on 3/15/2016

2001 Oldsmobile Aurora
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Oldsmobile Aurora and Pontiac Bonneville users probably want a GMOS-09. GMOS-09 lets you use the stock amp.

Pros: NONE - if you have an amp.

Cons: IF you have an amp, GMRC-04 is a poor solution that requires you CUT the amp wires and maybe replace the speakers. OR Purchase the bypass wire adapter separately. Why not purchase the correct part GMOS-09 ??

Worked as described

Garth from Nebraska on 1/28/2016

2000 Pontiac Bonneville
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked well and installed easily. Like some people had said, the case and board on the module are kind of loose. Nothing a bit of epoxy didn't fix.

Pros: Retained factory chimes and RAP functions.

Cons: Parts of module fit are a bit loose.

Fairly straight-forward product. Connector matched interface in car perfectly and the terminals on the wires were solid.

Pros: Easy to splice into vehicle.

Cons: Instructions could have been a little more clear, but they work.

Don't cut the volume- 2000 Pontiac bonneville

Trent B from Seymoir, In on 3/28/2015

2000 Pontiac Bonneville
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose not to cut the volume reduction wire on the module. When I mounted it under the dash the chime volume level was perfect.

Pros: Stereo wiring was included! Installation was very easy with this component. Worth the extra expense... I highly recommend this divice.

Cons: None

Works great, but quite overpriced.

Mark L. from Minnesota on 2/10/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything works as it supposed to, makes installing after-market units much easier. The chime function is much louder, and sharper pitched than the stock chime. I wish that I had known this before installing it. I wish that the chime could be tuned, tone adjusted, and volume turned-down easily. I am very happy, that it works as advertised. It is difficult to swallow, that the wiring harness adaptor costs as much as the radio unit that I installed with it.

Pros: Works, as advertised. Saves a lot of wiring troubles.

Cons: Too Loud. Most difficult to take, the Price for a few wire leads and connector plug is an outrageous price to ask). Love the Crutchfield guys, but this is hard to take. The Metra product works well, but if this is the required cost Crutchfield should be finding another source and/or making their own adaptors!!!

Works, if overpriced.

2003 Buick LeSabre
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In short: it works. It mates the horrible dock-and-lock connector to a harness and a module to preserve chimes, etc. Instructions could be better. This unit works with a lot of different GM cars, but nailing down the specifics for mine (a 2003 Buick LeSabre) took a bit of guessing. The case doesn't inspire confidence. The tabs weren't real secure, nor was the circuit board glued or otherwise nailed down. I used some epoxy to avoid any potential rattling. For such an expensive unit, they should include mounting tape and velcro.

Pros: It works. The car seems the same as it was before, with chimes, retained power-on, etc.

Cons: Instructions are confusing. To adjust the volume from the default very-loud to something quieter, you have to scratch a trace on the PCB. (!!! Why not include a DIP switch or jumper, so the customer can test which volume is best?! This is the most ridiculous aspect of this design.) The board was loose in the case. Nothing held it down, and the tabs on the case didn't grab securely. I used some epoxy to anchor the board and keep the box closed.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wire harness was perfect, I personally don't know that the Chimes are really needed but they work.

Pros: Simplified installation.

Cons: The Chimes are very loud and I will have to take the dash apart again to turn it down.

Wrong Adaptor

Luvmychi3 from Wisconsin on 2/4/2014

2000 Pontiac Bonneville
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I entered that I had the 2000 Bonneville with 8 speaker option, suggested the GMRC-04 Factory integration adapter, this is only for the door chimes. I needed the GMOS-09 adapter for door chimes, amp, ect, which they do not carry. I ended up ordering the wrong item and had to order the correct option else where.

Pros: Great if you only need to keep the door chimes.

Cons: Only for door chimes

GM Factory Integration Adapter

PaPa AL from Woodbury, TN on 7/27/2012

2002 Buick LeSabre
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Doesn't work perfect. Sometimes, it does not shut off radio with key off after opening door. Never shuts it off if you have door open before shutting engine & removing key.

Pros: Retains chimes.

Cons: Not perfect.

Overview: The AXXESS GMRC-04 lets you replace the factory radio in select 2000-2005 GM vehicles. The AXXESS GMRC-04 is designed to be used in non-amplified 2000-2005 GM vehicles without Onstar that have the "Dock-n-Lock" style harness (the radio harness that stays mounted in the dash when the radio is removed). The GMRC-04 retains the warning chimes that will normally be lost when the GM factory radio is removed through the use of an on-board speaker. It will also provide a 12-volt switch accessory wire for proper radio operation

Note: The radio itself is held in by two spring loaded clips, one on each side.

Vehicle Compatibility: The AXXESS GMRC-04 is compatible with the following 2000-2005 GM vehicles (without Onstar), that use the "Dock-n-Lock style harness".

  • 2000-2005 Buick Lesabre
  • 2001-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora
  • 2000-2005 Pontiac Bonneville

Note: The GMRC-04 can be used in the vehicles listed above that come with a factory amplifier; however the factory amplifier must by bypassed. If the vehicle has Onstar, that feature will not work. Please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Retained Accessory Power (R.A.P.): The ignition power source of most GM vehicles keeps the radio on until one of the doors is opened. This feature is called the R.A.P. (retained accessory power). The GMRC-04 is designed to retain this feature.
