Metra Crimp Tool Set

Anonymous from Cumberland Center, ME on 1/5/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was able to cut wires from my Metra wiring harness and strip them using this tool. The stripping part wasn't super effective compared to my dad's old tool that he had in his tool box, but it did the job. In the future I'll buy a nicer tool that can perform more tasks once I do a bigger car audio install. This worked fine for my small project but if you are doing a lot of work you'll want something nicer.

Hard to use

Andy from Plymouth, MI on 9/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This tool is too hard to use, your hands will get a real work out. Had it not been for the crimps, I wouldn't advise to get this, unless you are really desperate for such a tool. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more and buy a better crimping tool.

Pros: - Cheap - Comes with crimps

Cons: - Hard to use, limited utility.

Low Quality

Graham from Oxford, MI on 6/27/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wire stripping portion is useless. I bought it for the crimping ability and it did the job. If you're looking for wire strippers, or a long term solution, look elsewhere.

Pros: Crimping ability

Cons: Stripping ability Stiff

Always needed one and finally got one, works like a champ

Good product

Blizzil from Cumberland, MD on 5/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It worked great! It was also a great price.

Pros: Price and ease of use

Cons: None.

Good for simple jobs

Karl from Corpus Christi, TX on 5/18/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It did pretty will for my simple install, I don't think this is the quality needed for more serious jobs or for the Audio Enthusiast that is constantly making changes/upgrades to their system. But for a regular guy like me that needed it for a one hour install and probably won't use it many more times, this works just pretty well and has a low price.

Pros: Cheap price

Cons: Cheap build quality.

Works sorta. Cheap.

Trev from Boston, MA on 1/16/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wish I had sucked it up and gone to a hardware store to spend money on a real pair of wire strippers. A bit more money but then at least I'd have a quality tool in my toolbox for a lifetime. These barely work. I ended up doing most of the wire stripping on my speaker install with a utility knife because it was easier than using these.

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Bad handle - it's just a flat piece of metal with a dip on the handle. This combined with a stiff hinge that sticks makes it so you really have to give it some muscle to work. The cutters and strip notches were also quite dull. These are more of a toy than a tool.

Basic crimper

JerryD from Washington on 1/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This crimper is very basic and can do the job if you are careful. The crimp caps have a very narrow metal band and it tends to slip when when you crimp down on it. I used 50% more caps than I had wires to crimp due to the smoothness of the crimper itself.

Pros: price included crimp caps

Cons: workmanship of the crimper Design of the crimper design of crimp caps

Crimping Tool

Ib from North Carolina on 12/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have several other tools similar but this one the most useful

Pros: Fit every wire size I needed

Cons: None

Average tool, crappy caps

Vanessa from Texas on 12/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The tool definitely got the job done, although maneuvering the thing was a tad difficult since it was so stiff. The crimp caps on the otherhand were flat out terrible (some caps were even missing the metal crimp piece in them!). Would recommend buying more reliable caps - you're essentially just paying for the tool here.

Pros: Multifunction tool

Cons: Stiff to work with, poor quality caps

It's alright

Lieyle from California on 10/25/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The tool was really stiff to use (I've got weak, lady wrists haha) but it did the job. Got it cause I needed the tool and didn't need to purchase 100 crimp caps. The caps were fine, to be honest I had never crimped before, but my new car stereo works so they do the job!

Pros: Caps included, just enough caps

Cons: Tight, stiff

Sam W. from Texas on 8/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It got the job done but more effort than I expected. I mainly got this because I didn't need 100 crimp caps, which seems to be smallest number that can be bought outside of this combination product.

Pros: right number of crimp caps

Cons: not very high quality

Decent tool, get better caps elsewhere

Kevin from Florida on 8/6/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this kit to replace the stereo in my truck. The tool is decent, but the caps that come in the kit are of poor quality. I recommend getting better quality caps.

Pros: Price

Cons: Caps are poor quality

kwenz from manchester nh on 6/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

its a ok tool, nothing premium about it.

Great crimper, not quite so good wire stripper

Ian from California on 4/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like others have said, it's a bit stiff to operate, but it's not a dealbreaker. The crimp tool worked just fine. The wire stripper functionality doesn't accommodate 20 gauge wires, so I had to get a separate wire stripper when installing my stereo. I bought this for the sake of having both tools in one, but it didn't work out. Be sure to check how big your wires are if you're planning on using this. If they're 18 gauge or larger, this would be a pretty good deal, especially as it also includes a set of crimp caps so you're really getting three products in one.

Pros: Dual functionality, included crimp caps.

Cons: Limited range on wire stripper, stiff operation.

A bit stiff, but does the trick

Matt from New Jersey on 12/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There's not too much to be said about this crimping/stripping tool. For the cost, it does the trick. But don't expect a premium, comfortable experience.

Pros: Wire stripping and cutting is aligned fairly well

Cons: Grip padding is too hard Requires too much force to open/close (made worse by the minimally padded grip)

Metra Crimp Tool Set

Randy from California on 11/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This tool and crimp caps was perfect when it came to making sure the wire connections were secure and protected. I myself went the extra step of soldering the wires before using the caps for protection.

Pros: Good thing I got the kit.

Cons: None.

Metra Crimp Tool Set

Anonymous from Durham,NC on 8/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wish I could return it with free shipping. Very stiff handle and didn't help me stripping the wires. Ended up using a scissor, just have to be so very gentle.

Pros: Price

Cons: Stiff handle

For less than 10 bucks, it does the job.

MikeS from Kingston, WA on 7/31/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For less than 10 bucks, this tool does the job, but probably only good for 1 or 2 more installs. The stripper starts to get a bit dull after doing one harness, and my hands were hurting a bit because the handles are so thin.

Pros: Inexpensive. Better to use the crimps than just electrical tape and twisted wires.

Cons: Thin handles with little padding can fatigue your hands if they're old and achy like mine. Tool is not made from the hardest steel in the world and stripper seems to dull quickly.

Metra Crimp Tool Set

CharlesD from Monetery Ca on 6/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I guess it gets the job done. However, the plastic handle cover on the left side came off. Also, it not easy to open and shut

Pros: gets the job done

Cons: Hard to open, plastic handle fell off

Crimp toolSet

donb from Carmel, CA on 5/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got the job done just fine, and did exactly what I needed it for. It is not the highest quality, which is predictable based on the price. The tool was a bit stiff opening and closing the jaws, but crimps appeared secure.

Pros: Does what it was meant to

Cons: Stiff operartion

Easy to use (esp. after WD-40)

AlexC from San Antonio on 5/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As others have noted, opening and closing the tool requires a bit of force. I followed the suggestion others made and used a bit of WD-40 to the tool's rivets, which made it much easier to use. The yellow plastic on the handles isn't the best but I was fine with it since I'm not using this tool all the time.

Keep your Crimp hand strong!

eROCK from Chicago, IL on 5/9/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This tool does what it says. It has a wire stripper that works fine, and a crimper that crimps fine. This tool came with a set of 20 or so Crimp caps. Just enough for your basic install. All of the other reviews here are correct. The handles are very stiff, and you have to use both hands to pull them apart. I'm sure over time it will loosen up.

Pros: Works as advertised.

Cons: Difficult to pull the handles apart.

You get what you pay for but does the job

LarryR from Columbus, OH on 4/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It got the job done but like many other comments here, is a bit "sticky".

Pros: Price.

Cons: Hard to open/close.

Metra Crimp Tool Set

stiff to move

Pros: easy to read the numbers

Cons: stiff to move

Too tight

JVH from Santa Monica, CA on 2/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The crimper itself is either excessively painted (black) or is too tight, unmovable with one hand. You have to use both hands to practically pry the crimper open.

Pros: crimps well, if you have the hand strength

Cons: Not fluid, especially for when needing to use one hand on wires and one hand one crimper.

Good product

Tommy from Jarrettsville,MD on 12/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crimp Tool worded fine, but was very stiff.

Works OK... not great

ntilekt from Phoenix, AZ on 12/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You get what you pay for with these. As others have stated they are a pain to open and close. Requires a lot of extra effort. That being said, once you get past that, they do the job fairly well. I've only used them for cutting and stripping insulation, and haven't had any issues doing either.

Pros: - Cheap enough that you won't be upset if you lose it... or throw it away. - Does what it is supposed to

Cons: - nearly impossible to open/close - cheap construction

Metra Crimp Tool set

Purchased these to install a stereo in my sons truck. The wire connectors that came with the tool worked very well and the crimp tool did not give any problems

Very Cheap Tool

JonF from Barrington on 7/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The crimp tool required some pulling and tugging both ways (to open and clamp). Pain in the buns when trying to put a radio in.

Pros: Crimp caps

Cons: Crimp tool

Metra Crimp Tool Set

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Can't open with one hand, need to use two hands to re-open after cutting, crimping etc. Only cost $ so not worth trying to return. You get what you pay for. My Crutchfield experience was good, I only blame them for selling low quality tools.

Pros: None

Cons: Low quality.

Crimping tool.

Manny from Brooklyn, NY on 1/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never used a crimper and didn't realize how easy it was. I give a lot of credit to everyone at Crutchfield for walking me through the steps. I'm looking forward for future installs.

Pros: EASY!

Cons: None.

Metra Crimp Tool Set

Anonymous from APO Germany on 10/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Useful tool but I ended up soldering the wires. Wasn't confident the crimps would stay in place.

Pros: you get enough crimps to do the job

Cons: crimp tool was very hard to operate, use WD40 and work it in prior to use

Does the job

Matt C. from West Memphis, AR on 9/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tool wasn't the greatest, but it does the job. You have to PULL it to the open position and use your man strength to clamp the connections.

Pros: Does the job Strips jacket off of wire without tearing copper threads It was free I didn't have ANY bad connections

Cons: I did it all without thinking about it, but you might be better off than I was if you hit the joints with wd-40 and loosen it up a bit.

Works fine

HondoS from Baltimore, MD on 9/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works fine.

Pros: Got the job done with relative ease. Arrived in the same delivery box as the radio.

Cons: Handles should be a little wider so they don't bruise your palms when squeezing. However, it's acceptable to install a radio.

Reasonably priced, gets the job done

Anonymous from Altoona IA on 8/29/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It takes the jacket off wires well, and crimps the crimp caps perfectly. My only complaint is that it is ultra stiff to use.

Works ok

Pilot06-Accord01 from Antioch, CA on 8/2/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced factory radio in 2001 Honda Accord with Pioneer DEH-6400BT and added USA-Spec BT35-HON and PA15-HON2 to factory radio of 2006 Honda Pilot (see my reviews). This tool is ok for price, used it wire stripping and crimping, and got the job done. Very stiff, I assume by design.

Pros: Price

Cons: Very stiff

Crimp Tool Set

RCGz from Dallas, TX on 7/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worked well for splicing wires together. Would've given 5 stars if tool was easier to use. It was tough to open and close. Joint probably needed some lubricant. Caps were perfect for the job!

Pros: Caps included.

Cons: Tough to open and close crimper.

Metra Crimp Tool Set

MissNikki from Knoxville, TN on 1/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this set for my first headunit install. I spent about 20 minutes using this to connect my wires. The crimp tool was stiff, and took two hands to open for each crimp or cut. It was very hard to get a good crimp because the narrow handles really hurt my hands when I pressed down. I woke up the next morning with a bruise on my palm, and a sore hand. I think I will go to a local store and spend a little more on a tool with better handles. The crimp caps worked just fine, and I had plenty left over for any mistakes or future projects.

Pros: Crimp Caps

Cons: Crimp tool

Crimpers not that great

I asked the advisor what tools I may need for the complete installation. He told me exactly what tools I needed and I though I may need a crimp tool and some crimps in addition to the tools I already have as it's been a long while since I've done a radio installation. He confirmed I needed crimps and a crimp tool. I don't need to run out to a store to hunt down everything I need to do the installation now which saves me time and money.
