Thanks for the reply - I ended up resolving this with a similar method. [ Ryan  Jan 24, 2014 ]
I purchased a spacer (see Atrend, google it) then modified the spacer with a dremel to fit my grille. This was for a 10 inch sub. You may be able to locate the same from the above company fore a 12" sub. Mine enabled me to use a grille to protect a down firing Infinity sub woofer. [ Mark  Jan 24, 2014 ]
There are grills made for subs with a high cone surround such as Polk, Kicker, etc. Either use something like that, or make a spacer. You could either make a MDF trim ring that goes around the outside of the sub and then mount the grill to that. In the past, I have also made a double front on boxes with the sub being mounted to the inner layer and grill cloth, regular grills, or nothing at all. It looks nice recessed like that. [ Bambihunter71  Jan 16, 2014 ]
Add to the rubber ring with foam or rubber from lowes and see what happens or mount the box the speaker is in to a location so it doesn't move and leave the grill off. [ BRIAN A  Jan 13, 2014 ]
