Our take on the Pioneer AVH-280BT

I love having Bluetooth in my car. Not only can I do hands-free calling, but I've also got easy wireless access to the media on my smartphone — perfect for catching up on news, podcasts, or checking out a cool new playlist on Spotify. Pioneer's AVH-280BT DVD receiver will let you tap into this world too. If your smartphone plays it, you can listen to it without having to fumble with aux inputs and cables. And, with most sources, this Pioneer offers touchscreen control over your music too.

Bluetooth® improves your drive

I love having Bluetooth in my car. Not only can I do hands-free calling, but I've also got easy wireless access to the media on my smartphone — perfect for catching up on news, podcasts, or checking out a cool new playlist on Spotify. Pioneer's AVH-280BT DVD receiver will let you tap into this world too. If your smartphone plays it, you can listen to it without having to fumble with aux inputs and cables. And, with most sources, this Pioneer offers touchscreen control over your music too.

If you enjoy your music from other sources, never fear. This receiver covers the bases with CD and DVD playback, an aux input, and iPod® and iPhone® control via USB. And if you want the added attraction of video playback, you can watch DVDs when the parking brake is engaged, or send the video output to optional rear seat screens so your passengers can enjoy some video entertainment when you're heading out on a long trip (or a trip to the store).

Impressive sound

I've got a Pioneer in my car, and I can testify to the sound quality I enjoy every time I turn the key. The AVH-280BT rocks out with a powerful MOSFET amplifier, while the versatile 5-band equalizer tames the rough spots in your car's acoustics. If you're looking for a little more punch, connect an amp or powered sub to the two sets of preamp outputs and kick things up a notch.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Really cool upgrade from the stock stereo. Nice Bluetooth addition. The iPod controls are a little clumsy at times, requiring you to scroll through all artists in order rather than being able to search or move to a specific letter in the alphabet. Otherwise a great stereo.

Pros: Cool looks with double din. Nice Bluetooth functionality

Cons: iPod controls are a little clumsy

I installed this stereo in my 2004 Honda Accord, and everything has been great. It was easy to install, and looks good, too. The Bluetooth connects to my phone automatically and within just a few seconds of starting the car. It also connects to my iPad via USB very easily. The microphone works great for hands-free calling and the touch display is nice and responsive for quick changes while driving.

Pros: Sound Quality, Connectivity, Picture, Value

Cons: Buttons have connecting overlay so distinction between them requires a visual check

The radio/BT/with backup camera function fits my wants perfectly. I am very pleased with the width and brightness of the camera projection and sound quality of the radio, actually the music from my iPhone (the radio is great, but I usually listen to my iPhone playlists and audio books. The phone BT function is excellent, but the radio is so new I forget that I have the phone function on the radio, The microphone is incredible, my wife, who is hard of hearing, can actually hear me (I think that is a good thing most of the time). Very pleased with radio, camera video function, camera, Blue Tooth function, microphone and installation was very straight forward.

Pros: BT services Back up camera connection, beautiful full screen Great iPhone connection Knew that Crutchfield had my back if I had a problem installing, a very reassuring feeling

Cons: Sony mentions BT software update in manual, couldn't find it online, otherwise read the manual it's all very good. No Cons with the radio

So far so good. I've had it installed for 3 weeks now. It produces good sound, is fairly easy to use, and looks great in the dash. Sometimes it takes a while/needs manual intervention for Bluetooth to connect. Matte finish washes out in the sunlight regardless of "dimmer" setting.

Pros: Good sound Easy to use Looks good in the dash Price

Cons: Bluetooth is slow Matte finish on the screen

My First DVD Player for car, And i was impressed. Everything i could need and easy settings without combo buttons to get you from here to there. I never used the built in amp cause of the RCA outputs, Very nice sounding deck. The DVD on a flash drive is insane.

Pros: Sound Clarity , Outputs and Inputs, EQ, Backup Camera, ALL THE ABOVE !

Cons: I failed to notice the buttons stay blue when changing colors, But that was my fault it does say that in there description.

I was in the search for an upgrade for my OEM radio. My needs were touchscreen, bluetooth, and some dimming for night time driving. The price was very nice for a touchscreen unit. I was told not to go with any of the android touchscreen options, even if they were cheaper. This head unit exceeded my expectations for the price. It isn't very crazy with the physical buttons but the screen is very responsive. I love the option that I can actually turn the screen off or configure the dimming options of it. The options are pretty good. Has subwoofer options too if you want to head that route. It also supports a backup camera but in my case I can't use it because of the wiring harness that my car uses. I'm sure if I work on it I can make it work. The only thing I dislike is the parking brake deal. Although throwing a switch in there fixes the whole thing.

Pros: Exceeded expectations for the price.

Cons: Wattage is a little underpowered but that is how it is with these head units. Nothing an $60 amp won't fix.

Does everything I need it to. 6" touch screen and Bluetooth for streaming and hands free calls. Auto connects in about 15 seconds after powered on. Sounds a little better than stock head unit (Mach 1000 which is great). 5 band EQ, two user customizable curves, and three loudness levels are really nice to shape sound and save settings. For what I paid it's great. Didn't think I'd miss my rotary volume knob, but I do. Wish there was a digital knob I could control from the screen. Screen colors could be more vivid. They look a little washed out.

Great for the money. The built-in amp tends to distort at high levels, so if you're building a full system you'll want a separate amp. Bluetooth calling works well, but if you're streaming bluetooth audio, it tends to be a bit laggy. I remedied this by using the rear USB and wiring an iPod into the glovebox with all of my tunes on it. Problem solved!

Pros: Good value, lots of features for the money. Ease of use/user interface

Cons: Bluetooth audio a bit laggy, distorts at high volumes. Needs outboard amp

djthedj from Dallas, TX on 4/12/2016

if you are a fan of Pioneer like me, and you think you'll have great sound, then avoid this product! I've had Pioneer car audio in all my cars for over 20 yrs. My last one I used for 8 or 9 yrs and loved it. I recently upgraded (or thought it was an upgrade) to this model to join this decade so I have a USB port for me, and movies for the kids. I thought "can't go wrong with Pioneer" since it's mp3 and menu navigation is set up better than most and I wasn't looking to change to another brand for a layout I didn't like. Pioneer has always made sure they had the right settings, once you find the happy medium, one audio setting fits all (because nobody listens to just one genre of music). Well, this model lacks what previous models had in audio settings and output. Once I get it close to my previous model, the bass distorts the mid-high level (which Pioneer has never done) and there is no happy medium. It hits at all the wrong frequencies, and no advanced settings like my old one. It's got your standard SLA, Loudness, and Bass, but no clear way to adjust High, Low & Mid. My last 2 had advanced audio settings as well as the Low, Mid & High which was deep, the ability to tweak each range (lo, mid, hi) to 1k or 2k, or 80k or 100k and so on, and you can go 1-2N or 1-2W. I never understood that part, but I always had great sound. This has none of it. The quality is terrible.

Pros: Several types of inputs, inexpensive car DVD player, supports more modern features.

Cons: Many file types are unplayable, and my biggest complaint is the poorest sound quality output I've ever heard from a Pioneer.

    Decent Budget Double-Din Head Unit

Kyle from Central Point, OR on 3/28/2016

    2010 Chevrolet Tahoe
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer AVH-280BT was the least expensive double-din head unit that was made by Pioneer, played DVDs, and supported Bluetooth. On paper, this unit checked all the boxes of my "must-have" list. However, now that I've seen the unit in person, I realize there is a big difference between simply implementing a feature and doing a task well. The interface on this unit is extremely clunky and frustrating to work with. The LCD screen is very poor quality -- low resolution and everything is blocky and appears un-refined. Sound quality is mediocre, at best. Several features that were expected are nowhere to be seen. For example, I've seen several press releases from Pioneer stating that all 2016 head units with bluetooth support also include Siri Eyes-Free. However, I cannot figure out how to use it on this product. The manual makes no mention of it, either. Ultimately, this product is an entry-level head unit that ticks a few boxes on the "features" list. But don't be fooled into thinking that more expensive head units are wastes of money. The AVH-280BT demonstrates that you don't get what you don't pay for.

Pros: Inexpensive for the brand and feature list.

Cons: Poor quality, low resolution display. Unrefined, clunky interface. Unimpressive sound quality.

    Nice head unit

Omar from cranford, NJ on 3/14/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a solid setup if you want to add a double din screen to an older car. 1991 Mustang has the space for a double din (with some modification to the car of course). Warning, it's a full double din and it's deep; if you have any space issues be warned. The wiring harness is a breeze; it's color matched to the aftermarket Ford wiring harness (that Crutchfield gave me for free). I recommend soldering all the wire ends together; makes for a cleaner install. The screen is bright and the touch is very responsive. Bluetooth syncing was a breeze. I haven't played with the other functions yet, but it seems like a solid unit; recommended by a good friend and the Crutchfield tech says it would've been his recommendation as well. What I love is that I took a 25 year old car, and gave it bluetooth phone and bluetooth streaming. Included in the box is a microphone with a Very long wire that allows you to mount your mic anywhere in the car. It also has a USB cable that gives you a usb port for charging your phone or hooking up your iPod (routed to my glovebox). This is a great setup for a good price.

Pros: Good looking, easy to install, mic and usb cable included, easy sync.

Cons: It's not that loud, but then it's a 25 year old car; they didn't make the car acoustically well so I accept that it's going to sound like a newly built well insulated factory system.

If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically.
    • Call Log: The 50 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the touchscreen monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Pioneer AVH-280BT also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AVH-280BT lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4-up phones only). The head unit will also display your music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod Connectivity w/ DAC Bypass: The Pioneer AVH-280BT supports direct connection of your Lightning or 30-pin connector iPod/iPhone through its rear-panel USB port and 3.5mm jack. The AVH-280BT offers audio/video playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select Apple iPod/iPhone models. Audio & Tuner Section

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-280BT is equipped with a 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: The Pioneer AVH-280BT is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-280BT are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

Rear Speaker Setup The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

2V/4CH Preouts + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-280BT features two pair of 2.0-volt preouts (Front & Rear/SW). The unit's Rear/SW preouts can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Crossovers: The AVH-280BT employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 5-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 5-band graphic equalizer (100, 315, 1.25k, 3.15k, & 8k Hz).

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.
    • Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. The beep tone can be turned on or off.

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID AM/FM tuner features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    AV Connections

AV Input: The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting an external audio/video device. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the AV input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

Video Output: The AVH-280BT features a rear-panel composite video output that allows you to connect an external display to the unit. You can play back the same video source which is being played on the head unit. You can select the unit to output a 16:9, Letter-Box or Pan-Scan aspect ratio to match your external display's screen size.

Rear-View Camera: The AVH-280BT is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC8, sold separately). The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image. When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.0 seconds.

Yes it does. The AVH-280BT is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC8, sold separately). Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output. Hope that helps.[ Kenny  Jan 02, 2016 ]  Staff
