I thought this stereo was great until a software error made it completely inoperable 6 months past warranty. I would give this stereo negative stars if i could. A stereo for this price should last more than 18 months.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was a good unit for the 1st few months. Even though it does not control the power retractable antenna like I would prefer. But on the way back from a long trip in October, the Apple play connection quit. Now the blue tooth connection is failing and the data stream from iPod started loosing data every 10 minutes or so ( I even seitched iPods - either 2 bad iPods or one HU )

    Pros: Great looking

Cons: Lack of full functionality to meet my needs

I wish I could rave about this unit because everything works great, except Apple Carplay. That is the reason I bought the deck. I did the firmware update, tried multiple cables and nothing mattered. It just will not work. I spent about on hour on the phone with Crutchfield tech support and as much as they tried to help, nothing worked. They can't replace the faulty deck they sent me because the model was replaced with the 4100nex, and I don't want to pay extra because they sent me a faulty unit. There were no attempts to work out anything to help me, Pioneer was also no help. I hate to say it, but I don't think I will ever deal with either company ever again. Such a shame

    Cons: Doesn't function properly

    Siri at your command

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is great! Simple instructions had everything installed without hassle. I was going to spend a lot more on something with navigation, but once I found this one I was sold! Siri reads my text messages, lets me answer them hands-free, gets me directions to anywhere without fail, and I can play music from any device I own. I installed a usb port into my dash and an additional one with an included aux port in the back for the passengers. They both work great and look factory-installed. The microphone is clear as is the calls coming through the speakers. I was concerned I would have a "tinny" sound, but the feedback has been that most folks can't even tell I'm talking from my car! I actually found this unit to be better than I expected and much easier to install than I was anticipating. The sound quality for music is great, and I didn't even replace my factory speakers. (I have a 2002 Toyota 4Runner.) I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Pros: iPhone navigation is always up-to-date, unlike maps that need updating. Siri makes hands-free simple. Bluetooth works all the time, every time. Sound quality is great. Reasonable Cost.

Cons: The screen is sometimes hard to see in very bright sunlight, but that has to do with the way my dash is designed. I've been fiddling with the screen brightness, which has improved the visibility somewhat.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit functions as advertised, looks good and sounds great. The front panel buttons are a bit small and take some getting used to. Over all I am very happy with it as I bought it specifically for the Apple Car Play function and ability to leave my iPod docked permanent. I think too much went into the ability to customize the look and not enough into function. You can change colors and themes but can't use Bluetooth if the iPod is plugged in which stinks.

Pros: Easy install, good sound and Apple Car Play.

Cons: Way too many look and theme controls for me. Can't use Bluetooth while any other device is plugged in.

Only had the unit installed for one week...installation and set was very straight forward. Controls are easy to use. Display is easy to see in most lighting conditions. Touch screen is responsive and sensitivity is much better than my older Kenwood unit. HD radio functionality in my area is very good. Bluetooth streaming has been good with the exception that some of the music info that comes up on Pandora isn't automatically streamed to the display. I plan on adding to this review after I have had more time to use other features of the unit.

Pros: Easy set up and installation. Sound quality is very good and user interface is easy to use.

Cons: Some Pandora info isn't streamed to the unit display.

Why pay for navigation when your smart phone has it?

Dustin from Las Vegas, NV on 5/1/2015

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I went to purchase an aftermarket head unit, i started to evaluate if I truly needed to purchase one with built in navigation. Bottom line is, if you have a smart phone, don't waste your money; buy this. The Apple CarPlay makes this receiver an effective navigation unit. I can't ask for more. Is it a bit buggy? Sure. Some small things are annoying, but I'm hoping it's something that future firmware updates will fix and/or future iOS updates from Apple will fix. The U/I is extremely easy to use. My wife, who isn't all that technology savvy, likes the radio and how easy it is to operate. The touch screen controls seem responsive and accurate. Sound wise, it's rock solid. Very good sound from the internal amp and, of course, the external outputs as well.

Pros: Sound. User interface is easy to use. Great substitute to spending hundreds more on a navigation.

Cons: A tad buggy...not a deal breaker though.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works exactly as advertised. The interaction with the iPhone is amazing. The only negative is in the display format, the layout of song title and album artwork. It looks a little busy. Also due to all the wires, its trick to get them tucked away to enable to full install the unit. The factory speakers sound surprisingly good with the new receiver.

Pros: great interface with iPhone, good power

    Cons: display a little busy

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this radio, but it does a couple things that I wish it didn't. Like every time you start it up, you have to click ok that you will be a responsible driver and not take your eyes off the road to adjust the radio. Also, it doesn't always pick back up on the song you were playing especially if you use your phone and then get back in the car. I am going to call Pioneer today to see if both of these can be changed. But other than that, I love the radio. It has great sound and it displays the album art just like I wanted.

Pros: Great Sound Displays Album Art Love the CarPlay Phone conversations are very clear!

Cons: Have to click the box every time Doesn't always pick up the song you were last playing

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the stock head unit with the AVH-4000NEX. Installation was pretty easy. Most time consuming parts were: connecting the wires to the harness and routing all the cables. The dash is pretty easy to take apart in this car. I did have to reposition the AVH-4000NEX in the dash kit to allow enough clearance at the top for the screen to tilt open. I was able to retain use of the steering wheel controls with the ASWC-1 and the in-console USB port with another adapter. I'm pretty happy with all the features in this head unit. I like Carplay and HD radio. The only thing I would like to see improved is the screen, but I didn't want to pay extra for the capacitive touch screen. The AVH-4000NEX has crashed and had to restart once or twice within the 2 weeks I've owned it. I think I confused it by switching between different sources too fast.

Pros: Carplay, HD Radio, support for Pandora and Aha Radio, 2 USB ports, 7" screen

Cons: Feels laggy at times, resistive touch screen, DVD drive makes some mechanical noises at startup even when no disc inserted

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was a little complicated for a beginner, but not too bad. Definitely has some nice features, but list price seems high. Bummed that wireless Carplay won't work on it (requires bluetooth & wifi). Interface is a little complicated- I guess I was thinking that with Carplay the whole system would be as simple as iOS- the Carplay section is, but the rest of the menus are cluttered and unnecessarily complex. Also, pay attention to the instructions regarding USB1 and USB2- plug your phone connector into USB1 only, otherwise you're going to have to tear the whole thing out just to switch it later.

Pros: Carplay, great sound from speakers and microphone

Cons: Complicated interface, USB issues, hidden CD/DVD slot, price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit is great and Carplay is fabulous, when it works. Once winter came the touch screen stopped functioning and I could only listen to the last set radio station and use mechanical volume buttons. Told by Pioneer to remove the faceplate, put it in its case and send to them but you cannot remove faceplate when touch screen buttons do not respond. Told to keep trying until I could. Now weather is warmer it is working again and I finally removed the faceplate unit. Pioneer now want me to remove the whole unit and send it to them at my expense. Wish they had of told me that 6 months ago instead of forcing me to listen to the same radio station all winter. I was told they will just send it back if they cannot replicate the fault. Pioneer service need to get their act together. California weather is not the same as North East USA so how they will replicate the conditions is open to imagination.

    Pros: Carplay is nice

Cons: Unit needs to work all year round, not just when warm. Pioneer service sucks.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this AHV-4000NEX for my daughter to ensure that she has no reason to try communicating by using her cellphone without voice control. I bought it for the Carplay feature. The only complaints I can come up with are: Siri isn't yet perfect for voice recognition...once Apple does more magic on it, it should work much better. The Maps do work awesome though. The second complaint is that what would be REAL nice is if manufacturers would actually offer a stripped down version of this system with Car Play. I don't need a DVD player, so that could save a lot of hardware cost and space if that wasn't included. I just want a system with a good stereo, car play, and a backup camera. So I would have preferred to save maybe $200 and just have that. I think competition will cause this to happen in the future though. For now, it's an excellent system to put into any vehicle.

Pros: Easy install Awesome features including car play Great back up camera integration

    Cons: Just the price

    Very nice unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an awesome receiver. CarPlay is really convenient and easy to use. With Apple maps, you don't really need built-in navigation, so for that reason I'm glad I went with the 4000. Being able to remove the screen is also a nice feature. So many options for music, I could listen for the rest of my life and never run out of tunes. Lots of features and functions which I haven't tried yet. About the only thing I wish it had was a capacitive touchscreen instead of the resistive. I have a friend who has the 8000 and the screen is nicer, but I can live with it for the money I saved.

Pros: CarPlay Lots of input options

Cons: Resistive screen instead of capacitive

    Great Receiver

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not the easiest radio to get to work with iDatalink Maestro and Ford Sync - BUT once you do: an awesome good looking unit that delivers incredible sound quality. I've always loved Pioneer Head Units and this one is no exception. The Carplay interface delivers an impressive on screen NAV experience - so if you have an iPhone - there's no need to buy one of the more expensive NAV HUs. Love this radio and it literally saved my truck from the trade in line as I now have better technology and sound quality than any of the new rigs out there.

Pros: Good looking, great sounding, and once you have full iDatalink integration: it's a great stock replacement.

Cons: Hard to get to properly interface with iDatalink and Ford Sync - even with reading the instructions carefully, several tear down and reinstallations, and a couple reflashes of the Maestro. It seems that once everything with the iDatalink is programmed and in place, the final step that's neglected is to reboot the Pioneer. Mine took it upon itself to do so at a stop light and now everything works as promised.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX is just plain awesomeness. Crutchfield's advisors were a big help in choosing my system. I installed this unit into my 2003 Ford Explorer limited with a Bose Mach system and a 8'' subwoofer. I can not express enough how much clearer and crisp this Pioneer sounds it even makes my 8''sub thump hard. The directions were very easy to understand and installation took about 4 hours total. The night before we soldered all the connection and put shrink tube over the connections. The next morning the instillation was a breeze! I spent more time trying to figure out where to run and install the USB cables. I purchased a PAC USB Extension Cable to flush mount in my dash so I didn't have loose cables lying around. The trim tool is a must and I wish I had ordered a wire pulling tool, it would have been easier then the wire I used. I also purchased the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control it was easy to install. All I needed to connect my IPhone 5S to car play was to plug it in to the USB it was that simple. Now I am working on getting my new subs and amp to fit my system.

Pros: Great Sound and quality. All the options a person could ever ask for. You can fine tune it to what you want...

Cons: I really can't think of one

Car: 2006 4Runner Sport Pros: - Easy to install and use. - CarPlay is great. - Navigation from your phone is great too. - Great sound. Cons: - Hooked up the dimmer wire and it blew 2 bulbs on my AC/heater display (found out after that it's a common issue with this stereo and my car). - Turns out you can not have an iPod connected to USB 2 and have Bluetooth audio. If you want to use Bluetooth audio, unplug the iPod. It will work if you have a flash drive plugged into USB 2 though. Side note: The Only difference between the 4000 and the 4100 is the ability to connect android to the 4100. If you are an Apple person, save he money and get the 4000!!

Yes the Bluetooth is different bc you have to delete one to add one if you have three already in the system. This product was more than I needed, even being the base model of the NEX line. 25% of the features of the receiver were too complex to be compatible with my vehicle's electrical system. ( multiple video inputs and outputs including HDMI, steering wheel control) the OS on the reciever is not as "convieninet" as advertised but mostly so. After impulsively playing with my new toy in my car for 30 minutes or so the OS wasn't really an issue. The level of fine tuning you can do with the audio channels, I/O, and EQ are phenomenal. It comes loaded with "MIXTRAX" which is a media player that allows more listening options like continuously cross fading songs in your playlist. And for iOS users there's CarPlay. It's pretty nifty. It does things like calling, texting, and GPS from the Maps app on iPhone (so you don't need that expensive GPS add-on). But CarPlay is well thought out so everything works 100% hands-free with Siri. Accessing iPhone's entire music library is a plus at school well. After not being satisfied with 2 previous after-market radios, I think this may be my last one!

Pros: Massive quantity of input and outputs Versatility of fine audio control Security features Straight forward installation Touchscreen better than average (resistive) SD card slot 2 USB ports Plays Videos

Cons: OS is Friendly but not necessarily your best friend Performing firmware update is a rather drawn-out process CarPlay is awesome but needs tweaks to extend abilities to 3rd party apps. (Facebook, instagram, Twitter) and support for Apple's apps (photos, mail, Safari, calculator, compass) Switching between inputs could be a little easier.

    Nice unit!

Good unit, the biggest thing I can't say about this though is that less is more. This unit has so many different features and screens and modes. That it's almost to intricate to be manipulating while driving. I would have liked something a little more user friendly while on the road. All in all its a great unit.

Pros: Resolution CarPlay works good Customization Cool factor

Cons: Ease of use Software is sometimes clitchy

I purchased this unit to replace the factory installed GPS unit. I went this route for a number of reasons: 1) CarPlay; 2) I can use my phone's built in GPS; 3) Faceplate is removable; 4) I like Pioneer equipment. This unit has not disappointed in sound quality, functionality, and aesthetics! I recently changed from Android to iPhone and wanted a product that would work well with the iPhone 6. Siri-enabled CarPlay allows me to focus on the drive and still interact with my phone and radio. I removed the dealer installed GPS because it was outdated and didn't have hands free capability. CarPlay allows a seamless handsfree interaction and allow me to utilize the GPS provided by the phone. This saved me hundreds in cost. I have a Jeep Wrangler and wanted a unit that had a removable face for the "doors and top off" summers. Lastly, I have had Pioneer units installed in previous vehicles before and am very impressed with the sound enhancements the unit will bring across stock speakers. At this point, I do not have a need to replace the speakers as the sound and clarity is more than efficient.

Pros: - CarPlay - GPS features with phone - Removable faceplate - Pioneer sound quality

    Cons: None to mention.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good product. The CarPlay feature is why I purchased this as well as the Sirius Ready feature. CarPlay is worlds better than the AppRadio technology Pioneer used prior to Apple's CarPlay develop. The CarPlay feature does work great with my iPhone 6. No need to connect via bluetooth the Apple lighting cable is the only connection needed. One thing that would be great is if Pioneer would add vehicle speed volume control to the system settings. That is something though that I understand very few aftermarket radios have on them. Also wish the unit had volume control as a touch screen feature such as a finger swipe...but those are more of wish list items. The swipe thing could easily be added through a firmware update.

Pros: CarPlay, ease of use. Feature packed.

Cons: Lack of round volume contol.

Good job Pioneer

Great looking stereo. Cool features. Tons of them. A little complicated because there's so many ways to adjust the sound quality. To get the best sound after you adjust gain on your amp is to go into sound settings and adjust the source level input for each source. The sound was very low barely pushing my JL 12w3 with the jX 500/1 amp. I was mad because it was and expensive setup. After I found this everything is good now. App radio software is horrible right now, but there can always be a software update. No biggie.

Pros: Very cool features, easy to install, best hu on the market right now. Has a detachable face. Locks by pin code also.

Cons: Hard to set up and adjust sound. Takes a minute. (There is auto equalizer if you purchase the right mix)

I purchased this along with the Maestro RR, Ford Harness, Micro bypass and SiriusXM v300 tuner to replace my Ford factory radio with Sync. The main attraction was CarPlay and it works real well, save for "Hey Siri" which is hit and miss and usually miss. I don't know that it gives tons more than sync but is definitely nice and I'm glad I have it. Configurability, features and sound quality are top notch. Being a newb, I had some trouble with installation, but it was only with a few hard to access wires like the OBD and Sync SW2. Maestro works well.

I have used several Pioneer receivers in the past with great results. Recently ordered AVH-4000nex for my 2002 Monte Carlo and my biggest issue is the horrible sound quality. Installed a Pioneer GM-d1004 amp along with polk audio speakers thinking that my speakers were the issue...nope! So I installed a JL Audio Powerwedge max that I've had in a different car to try and round out the system. I had to drive the gain on the sub amp all the way up along with bass boost...just to get a little low end bass. Still not happy. So I ended up trying to drive down speaker levels and drive up the sub level in receiver...a little better but not satisfied Completely unacceptable...I think I've given this receiver every chance that I can. Bluetooth doesn't seem to be designed correctly. If there is more than 1 user of the vehicle, other users must go to the settings of the phone to connect. We have two iPhones and both will pair correctly. Only the the last connected phone will pair when getting in the car. If another paired user connects to the unit manually, then his will always connect and the other phone won't pair. This isn't an iPhone problem. I've verified that this is expected operation with Crutchfield's support. There should be a primary user and secondary user(s) that way if the primary isn't present then the radio should look down the list. I'm not happy with ford sync in another car we have but at least the phone connects to whatever paired device that is available. If I would have known this I probably would not have bought the pioneer.

The best overall Carplay compatible deck as of today, in my opinion. The only difference between this one and the higher cost variants is onboard navigation. If you have a smartphone, you can any app or the built in phone nav, so I have no need for the more expensive versions. In addition to Carplay, supports pioneer's own appradio apps, so any missing functionality can generally be provided via your smartphone, if you're comfortable with that.

Pros: Carplay and Appradio apps has a touchscreen in addition to physical buttons Tons of configuration options, and customization possible. lots of inputs and outputs sounds good hard to find a better combination of features for the value.

Cons: Software usability could be better. Definitely version 1.0 not intuitive how to switch between the various radio modes: "normal", appradio, and Carplay. appradio apps require a HDMI connection and won't work over just USB, but Carplay works over the standard USB. So if you want to use both Carplay and Appradio, you have to install both cables, and can connect your phone to only one at a time. Insane. depending on the vehicle, installation can be a huge job.

Because my car has BOSE amp and speakers, I chose to purchase an aftermarket MOST HUR 997 kit, which I had to buy elsewhere because Crutchfield does not sell one. The solution is fantastic! Much better sounding than the stock CDR-24 head unit. I also put in the XM kit. CaryPlay is great, though there are a few minor software glitches I'm sure Pioneer and Apple will resolve. Apple Maps works well for navigation. You won't be disappointed!

This radio is absolutely amazing. Sound quality is top notch. Features for digital music is also top notch. Blietooth was very easy to set up and use. My only complaint is the app radio part. I have several android phones such as LG G3, Samsung Mega, MotoX. And none seem to work when connected using the mhl adapter. I have an iphone for work and checked out compatible apps and the selection dwarfs whats available for android. I plan to reinstall correct iphone cables and give the interface another try, but on android its not whatbits cracked up to be. The LG G3 is my favorite phone that was not listed as compatible with mhl but the Mega is but failed to connect every time I tried. Having sirius xm and usb I habe plenty of music choices. The eq and audio customizations are incredible on this unit. I recommend it highly especially if you are an iohone user.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this receiver installed for a few weeks and so far I am very happy. HD radio, DVD, SD card slot, Bluetooth, and dual USBs all work well. The one thing that is not outstanding in my opinion is the APP mode (in it's current form). In order to use the APP mode you have to use an HDMI connection through an Apple Digital AV adapter (for iPhone), and the available APPs are a selection of third party APPs that work with APP mode. As I understand, the upcoming AirPlay firmware upgrade due out late this month will allow use of the native Apple APPs like maps, calendars, etc. requiring only a lightning connector. I feel confident that this upgrade will really set this apart from the lesser expensive Pioneer receivers, and justify the extra cost. Pandora control is great and works either through a USB connection or via Bluetooth. I have installed a backup camera with this receiver, and have already become dependent on that as a necessity. One consideration I would suggest is adding a bypass for the circuit that requires the parking break to be set, released and set again in order to access a number of the settings controls. This system is obviously built by manufacturers these days in order to avoid liability from the unwise element of our society that would attempt to watch a DVD movie while driving. The bypasses are easy to find on Amazon and are easy to install...just use it wisely.

Pros: Bluetooth, HD radio, Pandora control. great interface.

Cons: APP mode is not great, but should be much improved with the AirPlay firmware upgrade due out later this month.

I lived with this unit for a month. The AutoEQ works great, if you don't use the lousy Pioneer mic. The sound quality of the unit is also great, thus two stars instead of one. The AppRadio functionality is lousy. I really wonder about the glowing reviews, and if maybe I just received a defective product. In my experience, there is a 50/50 chance the AppRadio app will sync with my iPhone 5. If the app syncs, there is a 50/50 chance the Media Player App will sync and start playing. If all this doesn't work, or if one step fails, you will have to kill all the apps on your phone, and then reset the HDMI/Bluetooth connection on the headunit. All-in-all, IF it works 100%, you will hear music after about a minute. Oh, and that music will only be coming from a streaming app (Pandora, iHeart, etc.), the HD Radio tuner, or the Media Player App. Don't expect to be able to use the second USB port to control an iPod Classic/Nano/Touch. Nope, Pioneer couldn't figure out how to make that one happen. A few more positives, to show that I'm not being completely unreasonable: the menus are good looking and intuitive. There is generally very little/no lag in switching menus or searching for songs on the iPhone. The Siri Eyes Free dialing works well, and the Bluetooth speakerphone is also top-notch. Waze integration in the AppRadio mode never failed, and was AWESOME!! My main gripe is with the cludgy AppRadio mode, and since that is the sole reason I bought this unit, I must send it back.

Pros: - Sound Quality - Waze interface/function - Menus are fast, very little lag

Cons: - AppRadio interface/function - Only one USB port can be used if you are using the unit in AppRadio mode

Overall I really like this unit. It has a ton of functionality-possibly too much for most people-and looks great. I like how customizable the interface is, it makes it rather easy to incorporate into your vehicle. Most of the time, playing your sources is super easy: plugged-in devices will continue where they left off, Bluetooth is a little spottier, but if it connects, it will resume, too. I so far haven't found a way to play normal "aux"-input music. It assumes it's a video playback source, and will only play with the handbrake on. Not a major issue, but I wouldn't have bothered running an AUX input cable if I had known. NOTE: If you have a Chrylser/Jeep/Dodge vehicle with the Boston Acoustics premium audio, you probably have a factory amp. This amp *only* accepts L/R input over the "rear" channels on the harness. The Pioneer, on the other hand, *only* outputs phone calls over the *front* channels. You'll need to wire the front speakers from the radio to the rear speakers of the car (and disable the rear channels on the radio), or phone calls will not work!

Pros: - Looks great - Highly customizable interface - Sounds great - Fantastic control over just about everything - Tons of inputs

Cons: - A little overwhelming to do certain tasks - Interface is a bit cluttered: I'd rather not have the quick-list for switching inputs, or the genre for music. - Bluetooth is spotty on connecting (to my iPhone 5) - If you have a device plugged in, you *cannot* use Bluetooth audio. This is a hassle if you want to charge one device but listen to a different one. - Video-capable inputs won't work when the handbrake is not set, even if you *don't* have video playing.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is on the expensive side, but it is expected from a new to market product. It is easy to operate, it looks amazing, and it works seamlessly. I love that it has so many adjustments for sound and screen/buttons color that I am able to exactly match my car's dashboard lighting scheme for an OEM look. I installed it along with all new speakers, tweeters, and amplifier. The sound is amazing. Now I am just waiting for the Apple CarPlay software update to get a lot more from it.

Full of source options, Easy to use.

Amazing stereo, great value. The few issues I have with it is the screen scratches incredibly easy. rear view video is extremely laggy, down to a few frames a second at times. The appradio I had before this had no rear view video lag so I know its not an issue with the camera. Some times the receiver takes a few seconds to respond to a touch input, this can be very frustrating. Overall a great dvd in dash receiver for the price.

Pros: Will support Apples new Car Play, My 500gb external hard drive works with it.

Cons: laggy reverse camera video input, Laggy touch input at times, screen scratches easy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I was in the market for a new radio, after reading many reviews on many models I enlisted the help of one of their advisors, the end result was the purchase of the AVH-4000NEX (thank you Chance for your help) I installed the unit myself, the instructions were pretty clear, however I did have to monkey around with the Metra bracket as the fit was not optimal and created a slight interference on the display which became evident once I tried to access the DVD slot. The rest of the installation in my Ford 500 went pretty good. I connected USB cables to both ports, one of which I routed in to the glove compartment and the other had a permanent install inside the center console with the use of PAC-USBCBL. The mic was also connected and routed behind trim and liner to come out on the side of the dome light trim. I also purchased a Rydeen Duo backup cam (sorry guys) and installed it, this was a perfect fit to mount underneath my trunk handle. As far as the wiring for the parking brake is concerned I went ahead and invested $20 to get that taken care of. An adapter for the steering wheel controls was needed and the Crutchfield team had recommended the PAC-SWI-RC. This adapter comes with a ton of paperwork........make it easy on yourself, go to the PAC website and you can view specific instructions for your vehicle and print them out. I read reviews of folks struggling setting these adapters up, just make sure you follow the instructions step by step, it worked the first time....

Pros: Lots of features, I still have an iPhone 4 and so far the Bluetooth connectivity seems to be good and I am able to browse playlists and everything from the HU. Song information is also displayed nicely. Phone book and hands free calling works great, DVD works great, looks fantastic - very clean design. Car play feature that is upcoming played a role in my decision as well. Sound quality to me seems fine, still need to play with the EQ a little bit. I may expand features in the future (GPS).

Cons: Still not 100% happy with the fit of the Metra adapter, but as far as the radio itself I have not found any cons was well worth the investment.

    Great Head Unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The process of installing this in my Porsche was complex and pricey, requiring 2 new Rockford Fosgate amps among other modifications. The sound quality through original Porsche speakers is great. The bluetooth and satellite radio work well, including Siri Hands Free. AppRadio is still problematical, but I'm hopeful for Apple CarPlay firmware upgrade.

Pros: Customizable screen, touch screen responsive, great sound quality.

Cons: Pricey, still not sure how well the Apple CarPlay will work out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my pioneer Avh 8400 with this unit & I was looking for equal or better sound performance. I must say that I am very unhappy with the overall sound. It says it's a 4-volt output but it really don't sound like it. All I done was replace radio & the subs and inside speaker don't sound the same. I'm running JL Audio 500/1 class D mono block with 2 JL Audio 10 inch WO-3 in a down fire pro box which was slamming with my AVH 8400 in a 09 crew cab Sierra now I had to bump the gain up. I will have to add an amp to the 4000 NEX for inside speakers to get the sound quality that I had with the 8400 with no amp.

Pros: Looks good and it's a cool unit

Cons: No loudness button or control, no bass booster , sound quality does not compare to the AVH 8400

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this HU my self in a 08 tundra. Install was easy and went smooth I have to say get a diybypass the old school way didn't work for me. I also added xm and backup cam but have not yet tested the app radio part because I didn't see in the book until after I installed that a hdmi and adapter was needed. Bluetooth works great with Spotify and I only gave 4 stars for the lack of info about app radio and not being supplied with a hdmi cable for the money I paid for the unit.

    Pros: Everything...

Cons: They didn't mention that you need to get a hdmi cable and an adapter for mirror link

    Very versatile unit

Nicholas W. from La Mirada, CA on 3/25/2014

I recently got this unit installed in my 2004 Ford Ranger. I thought this would be a great way to bring current technology (Bluetooth, DVD, HD radio, XM) to my vehicle. It has been absolutely fantastic. I installed a backup camera as well, and the optional XM tuner. One of the features of this unit that stands out is that you can browse your music library when Bluetooth streaming. It also has the features of Appradio. If you are trying to decide between the Appradio and this unit, I strongly suggest you consider this one. You will have the best of both worlds, as this will function as a standalone unit or s an appradio when your phone is plugged in.

Pros: Clear bluetooth calling, streaming. Screen is bright and crisp, and has different angles. Screen is removable. Fantastic sound quality.

Cons: Extra cables needed for Appradio mode. Price is a little high, but worth the cost. Additional equipment needed if you wish to add Nav or XM.

    Touchscreen Display

Motorized 6.95" LCD Touchscreen: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX features a 6.95" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a paired Bluetooth device, or a connected component such as your iPod/iPhone, Android smartphone, or USB mass storage class device. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The unit's touchscreen display is motorized. The 6.95" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The angle of the motorized touchscreen display can also be adjusted to five different positions to meet your viewing needs in the car.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVH-4000NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB or SD/SDHC device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: The unit offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX's 6.95" touchscreen monitor can be detached from the chassis to deter theft (soft carrying case included). You can also enter a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (powered by Parrot): The AVH-4000NEX is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AVH-4000NEX without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit; only one device can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The AVH-4000NEX supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the AVH-4000NEX provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-4000NEX allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-4000NEX, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's touchscreen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book (w/ alphabet search): The phone book (up to 800 contacts) in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the touchscreen monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AVH-4000NEX lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

Siri Eyes-Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri (iOS 6.1+) via Bluetooth, the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen and external microphone for "Siri Eyes-Free" functionality. When activated, Siri voice prompts play through the vehicle's speakers and the user's commands and questions are received and transmitted to the receiver using the external microphone. Siri Eyes-Free provides access to many iPhone Siri functions such as music selection, making phone calls, and audible navigation (map will be displayed on iPhone); as well as listening to text messages, calendar information, and reminders. The head unit's touchscreen monitor will only indicate hands-free calling and song/artist information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: Your iPhone with Siri can be connected via Bluetooth and USB simultaneously. You can only access stored music using Siri when the head unit's source is iPod or Bluetooth Audio. All other Siri functions can be accessed from any source. The head unit's audio is muted while Siri provides audible voice prompts.

    Disc/SD/USB Playback

Compatible Discs: The 6.95" touchscreen display electronically slides down to load and eject your DVD/CD discs. The AVH-4000NEX supports playback of DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, CD-Audio, and CD-R/RW discs with music, video, and photo files.

Dual USB Ports: The unit's two rear-panel USB (type-A) ports and 58" USB extension cable allows you to connect USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) or USB Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) compliant devices; such as your Android smartphone, portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The USB port enables playback & control of music, video, and photo files stored on your portable USB MSC device and music only on your USB MTP device through the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX. You can substitute the CD-IH202 HDMI cable for another manufacturer's mobile-grade HDMI cable and the CD-IU52 cable with the Lightning cable that came with your iPhone. If you desire only music playback from your Lightning-connector Apple device, simply use Pioneer's Lightning-to-USB cable (130CDIU52, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the AVH-4000NEX.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPhone 4/4S with a 30-pin dock connector, use the Pioneer CD-IU201S RGB/USB cable (130IU201S, sold separately) to enjoy playback of stored music and videos, music and video apps, plus access to AppRadio Mode for playback of advance applications on the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX. Simply use Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device if you desire stored music and music app playback only.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.6A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. HD Radio: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • Station Text/Album Art + RDS: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The head unit also supports Album Art from select HD Radio stations. For analog FM stations, the Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as song/artist information when listening to compatible RDS FM stations.
    • Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-4000NEX is equipped with a 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVH-4000NEX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AVH-4000NEX employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features a 6, 12, or 18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App/Media App Control mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone/iPad. It is also not supported by USB MTP devices.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation; this can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, Disc, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

Rear-View Camera Input: The AVH-4000NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC6, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds. The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle. You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U260 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC260, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

Note: If you are already using the head unit's RGB input to access MirrorLink from your compatible smartphone, then you cannot connect this add-on navigation module (or vise-versa).

    OEM/Remote Control

OEM Integration: Via a firmware update, this Pioneer DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Pioneer head unit to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect; and select Volkswagens. The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, and VW owners to swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Pioneer head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, USB interface, Bluetooth (Ford only), Satellite Radio, 911 assist, and more. You will need to flash the iDatalink Maestor RR readio replacement interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you will also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer head unit's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

Note: Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible and what additional installation gear you will need to complete the install.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-4000NEX includes an IR remote control (CD-R33) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices.

    Yes you can. [ Manuel  May 07, 2015 ]
I use the Pioneer AVH-4000nex with an after market camera. The camera is decent. It was around 79 dollars and was clearly made to display on a smaller screen. [ Heath  May 01, 2015 ]
    VH-40000 has rearview camera. [ Ronald  Apr 30, 2015 ]
    I Have a 80 gb ipod that works fine with it [ Jonathon  May 06, 2015 ]
This unit works well with my 160gb iPod classic. I don't get the album artwork, but the music plays just fine along with the search and browse functions. [ Bryan  Apr 28, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There is no official word or timeline on the wireless CarPlay feature with any of the NEX models at this time. It would likely require a firmware update to support that feature If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Pioneer only has the remote that ships with it but can always be wired to steering wheel control adaptors as a remote. Pioneer also has a universal steering wheel control with an IR called a model CD-SR100 plus a regular hand remote called the CD-R55. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Apr 07, 2015 ]  Staff

Very good. I'm so happy with this Apple car play unit. [ Derrick  Mar 18, 2015 ]
I drive a Jeep Wrangler, and on the freeway is quite loud. Even with that, the microphone works well for a phone conversation, loud and clear. It does pick up a bit of the background noise, but overall is loud and clear. [ Christian  Mar 18, 2015 ]
According to the people I've talked to, it's very good. I haven't had a single complaint from anyone on the other end. [ Michael  Mar 18, 2015 ]
Hey, The microphone is solid. I have never had anyone Say they can hear me well and I use it daily. All around us a good device. [ Lee  Mar 18, 2015 ]
The mic seems to pick up very well and I don't have people asking me to repeat myself. I think it does a better job than the ONSTAR mic located right next it. I've really enjoyed the unit and would recommend it. I went to ProClips and got a custom I Phone 6 holder that really makse this a good looking install. [ DONALD  Mar 18, 2015 ]
The mic works fine and I have been told my voice comes through clear. Place it high though. I have to speak louder then I did using the factory mic. [ John  Mar 18, 2015 ]
Although playing music over Bluetooth has poor audio quality, I would rate the Bluetooth microphone and calling on par with any modern factory installed Bluetooth calling quality. No problems hearing or being heard. [ Dan  Mar 18, 2015 ]
Correct. You need an HDMI and a digital AV adapter to play video. I could not get the video to work with the lightning cable also plugged into the AV adapter. Here are the cabling scenarios I've used successfully: HDMI -> AV = Video HDMI & Lightning -> AV = AppRadioLive Lighting only = CarPlay [ Bryan  Mar 07, 2015 ]
All that and the usb to lightening cable. - usb - HDMI - digital AV adapter [ ERIC  Mar 07, 2015 ]
Nope that all you need! If it doesn't work, updated it. [ XEE  Mar 07, 2015 ]
I like not having built in NAV, more secure because the phone is with me. Waze does not support CarPlay yet, and may not ever depending on Apple's rules. I believe Waze does work in AppRadio mode, but it is glitchy. Long story longer, I am very satisfied with Apple Maps and am also glad to have saved the $. [ SCOTT  Mar 02, 2015 ]
Apple maps with car play is awesome. I've yet to be off the beaten path though without a cell signal. Plus it beats installing the gps antenna and paying the upgrade. [ Heath  Feb 25, 2015 ]
I use a real map like a man while listening to iron maiden. [ Nicolas  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Nope. I recently relocated and I rely on Apple maps to get around, its been fine. I will say CarPlay in general is buggy though. [ Brent  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I prefer using Waze since it is updated for free and has traffic alerts. I bought a car before with the stock nav and will never do it again. I don't want to pay for updates. What I did was get the connectors to mirror my android to the 4000 and use Waze so that it is displayed full screen. [ Binu  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Hello, I actually think the apple maps are sufficient. I haven't used nav a whole lot since purchasing the unit but when i have it's been great. [ Jeff  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I rather the 4000 for the bigger display. Secondly the GPS is something that I almost not use and if I need someting to look in maps yes i use the apple maps! [ Alexis Ortiz  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Nope, Apple maps works great for me. The only reason that you would need the built in Nav would be if you plan on traveling somewhere were you cant recive cellular service. So far I haven't had any issue using it. [ Jonathan  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I'm VERY happy with Apple Maps. Sure it was a rough start but I like having my map data in the cloud nowadays. For example, I was driving to Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH going through Cleveland last year and Apple Maps picked up an accident along the way. We were able to re-route before the accident and make it around the area. We could see the traffic backed up as we drove by it. That sold it for me. With built in nav, you've got to worry about updating your maps, buying the new maps from next year, etc. Plus, having the ability to keep all of my GPS favorites with me in my iPhone even when I'm away from my car is great. The 4000 is all you need to get a great sounding and great looking unit in the car and let your iPhone do the legwork. [ JOSEPH  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I'm very happy with my 4000 the apple maps are pretty good plus I wanted the larger screen I think it all personal preference but I think the 4000s buttons are cleaner [ adam  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I like the 4000 everything on my phone shows up & to me the waze works fine [ Marqis  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I am happy with the 4000-nex I run gps from my phone with sound through head unit it allows me to have visual gps (on phone) and still have full display on my head unit. Album cover and functions on pandora. [ Rusty  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Apple car play with the apple maps works fine for just navi use. Waze does not work on car play but I still don't think I would spend the extra money to get a 5000 for me. [ ANNA M  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I don't usually think the Nav cost isn't worth it. Apple maps works really well. Wave does not work, won't display. [ KEVIN P  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Waze works great on my HTC M8 paired [ Ronald  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I can stream music via iTunes Radio, and play it via Bluetooth. I don't have a Spotify account. CarPlay requires USB connection. [ Chris  Feb 26, 2015 ]
To play using carplay you need a direct cable connection. You can stream any audio via bluetooth , however you will not have the carplay controls or experience [ mitch  Feb 24, 2015 ]
So far, everything that I have tried to stream via bluetooth to the receiver has worked. No problems at all. [ Jim  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I have a Galaxy Note 4 and I play Pandora, Google All Access Music, etc over bluetooth. [ Thomas  Feb 24, 2015 ]
it will work over Bluetooth, but apply play requires the Lightning cable. [ Ivar  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Audio will work with bluetooth on a 5S. You will also have access to your phonebook, recent calls, and the ability to make calls via bluetooth. Carplay and Appradio require a lightning connection. Make sure you update the radio to the current version. It was really terrible before the update (crashes, stalls, failed to connect, etc). [ Chris  Feb 24, 2015 ]
For me it works some of the time. Most of the time the Bluetooth capability for calling would work but not all the time for music. Haven't quite figured out why. [ Jonathon  Feb 24, 2015 ]
With my 5s I use aHa and other apps via Bluetooth without direct connection. Any audio plays thru the receiver via Bluetooth , but if you want to use carPlay, you will need to connect the lightning connector to your iPhone. Hope this answers your question. [ Daniel  Feb 24, 2015 ]
I haven't used those apps, but I have played YouTube over Bluetooth, so I'm sure they would work without a wired connection. [ Jeff  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Bluetooth connectivity works well. Pandora is the only media application that works best. ITunes radio works as well using Car Play. Streaming audio such as from Spotify is possible but it can only be controlled through the phone, not the stereo. [ Marco  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Matt, I always used the rear USB cable with my iPod to stream music with my 4000 NEX. I can't say for sure but I don't think you can stream via bluetooth on this head unit. Wish I could tell you for sure but maybe this will help. Crutchfield's tech support should be able to answer your question though. [ Tim  Feb 24, 2015 ]
It can use a direct connection and use CarPlay or Bluetooth to play music from apps on an iPhone. And the buttons on the unit work over Bluetooth. [ Fred  Feb 24, 2015 ]
Thanks for the info. I am assuming that conversely I can have Pandora (while playing music) running in the background while the Map is the "active" app on screen, right? [ Lefty  Mar 02, 2015 ]
Yes, maps continues to run in the background. An "active apps" tray is lined up on the left side above the picture of the home button and will have a map icon there if you are actively navigating. It will continue to offer turn guidance while you use Pandora (or other apps). [ SCOTT  Mar 02, 2015 ]
I use an iPhone and Carplay and with that setup, yes you can. I don't know about android and app mode. [ Russell  Feb 18, 2015 ]
    Yes I can on my iPhone. [ Devin  Feb 18, 2015 ]
take the car's face plate off so you can access the bottom part of the radio's screen to remove it and then replace the screen and face plate [ ALEXANDER  Feb 02, 2015 ]

It should, as it works with my USB 3.0 hard drive. [ Devin  Dec 17, 2014 ]
Yes, includes AM tuner with 6 available presets. [ Theodore  Dec 10, 2014 ]
Yes, it has AM with six preselects and automatic scan. [ ERIC  Dec 08, 2014 ]

Yes both AM and FM [ JON  Dec 07, 2014 ]
I think I am missing something here. Yesterday I hooked up my USB drive and played some of the music on it but when I hooked up my iPhone I hit the HDMI button and the music stopped and the iPhone came on. I'd like to be able to listen to the USB drive AND see the maps on my iPhone at the same time. Am I missing something? [ Gene  Sep 29, 2014 ]
Absolutely. This unit plays almost anything from any device. I have it in my show car and it is my favorite. [ JOSEPH  Sep 29, 2014 ]

I'm a Apple person so I can't say for sure. I do use Spotify on this unit from my iPhone. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. [ TERRENCE  Sep 11, 2014 ]
Don't know. I have an iPhone. Works on that. [ PAUL  Sep 11, 2014 ]
Yes, it is. Was a great purchase [ GERARDO  Aug 22, 2014 ]
Yes, it is an easy task to accomplish. Once the software update is available on the website, you would download it to a USB stick. Then you would connect the USB stick to USB port one on the back of the HU. As soon as the HU detects the software, it will load it up. I recommend leaving a USB cable attached to USB one port so that you are able to load updates as they become. [ Elgin  Aug 08, 2014 ]
James, it'll be as easy as inserting an sd card or USB drive into the USB/SD slot. When the update comes out from the Pioneer electronics website, just install the update onto your device of choosing. Insert your device into the radio, and perform firmware update from the radio. The radio handles the rest. As far as when the firmware update comes out for CarPlay? The website says summer of 2014, well, summer is almost over... [ Bryan  Aug 08, 2014 ]
Sorry, but maybe I wasn't clear. The iPod is connected via USB not Bluetooth and is located (hidden) within the glovebox. I would like to be able to play a song, shut the car off, come back to the car, turn the car on and resume playing that same song without having to go search for and select that song from the library or playlist. The unit remembers what the last played song was; this is evident as the display shows that song's information on the display before it then switches to the first song in the library. [ Kevin  Jul 28, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Greg  Jul 26, 2014 ]  Staff
Kevin, I have not connected an iPod to the receiver yet. I use the blue tooth from my iPhone 5s to connect. Sorry that I was unable to answer your question. [ Daniel  Jul 29, 2014 ]
I'm using an iPhone so I'm not sure I can help. It usually resumes where I left off but for some reason my phone occasionally insists on starting in Shuffle mode. When that happens, where it starts is anyone's guess. [ Russell  Jul 28, 2014 ]
Using bluetooth audio connection, I go from the gym to my truck and pick up where I left off. Mid song even. That's the closest I've gotten to what you are asking. [ Jim  Jul 25, 2014 ]
Still looking for a solution to this problem...haven't found an adapter that will take the VW OEM Camera input and convert for the RCA input on the unit. [ JEFATMEM  Aug 31, 2014 ]
Hi, I used a non OEM backup camera w this unit, since my car did not have one. However, I believe any camera should work as long as you can get to its cables, u can hook it up to the unit [ Jorge  Jul 23, 2014 ]
It uses an RCA input for the reverse camera. If the OEM has that connector, I IMAGINE it would, but that is of course far from a guarantee. [ ERIK  Jul 21, 2014 ]
It works flawless in my 2014 Nissan Frontier with the factory back-up camera. So I assume it should work just fine with the factory camera in your VW CC. I had to do some research to find the 2nd OEM harness for my vehicle since it is a 2014 it is not in most data bases yet. Also you must turn on the back-up camera option in the setup menu on the Pioneer otherwise it won't come on when you put the vehicle in reverse. [ Douglas  Jul 21, 2014 ]
Yes I've used the SD card to playback movies and music and it works well. I haven't used the USB drive yet. The component doesn't read micro SD with adapter. USB doesn't connect to my android phone but I could connect using the HDMI port and that works well. Hope that this info helps you. [ ALEXANDER  Jul 03, 2014 ]
I've played video from a 32G SD card. Works really well. I've used the USB with audio files. Not sure about video from the USB port, though. [ ERIC  Jun 30, 2014 ]
So far it has played every format I have thrown to it. [ David  Jun 29, 2014 ]
Hi Devin, That's awesome. How do you find navigating your 500gb HD with the head unit? pretty easy? Also, are you playing movies, tv shows, or music videos? All of the above? Did you have to convert your video files to DIVX or WMV formats? Thanks, Alex [ Alex H.  Jun 28, 2014 ]
It does work, I have a 500 gb hard drive plugged in and playing video files around 5gb each with no issues, other then some long waits will it reads the format. [ Devin  Jun 28, 2014 ]
I have Galaxy S4. But the head unit (HU) should work with S5. Make sure BOTH the phone and HU settings are set to enable BOTH phone and media (audio). Also, note that you cannot enable the bluetooth media (audio) at the same time as the HDMI media (audio). It has taken a lot of messing around to learn how to use the HU. Have patience. It is working fine for me. I have the 4000nex in a 2013 Silverado and I am using the I data link maestro to keep steering wheel controls. I did not have to run any updates on my galaxy S5...still waiting on the mirrorlink news like everyone else. [ James  Jun 18, 2014 ]
No. My Pioneer AVH-4000NEX unit was able to play audio from a Pandora app on my Galaxy S5 via Bluetooth without any problems the first time I tried, updates necessary. Phone audio works as well, as you noted. [ TIMOTHY A  Jun 17, 2014 ]
I have an I phone but I had to purchase a pioneer hdmi cable and an apple adapter to make it work [ JAMES  Jun 17, 2014 ]
And yes it does connect for phone , will not reconnect for audio after shutdown ,, very weird but it has something to do with android 4.2.2 [ WILLIAM A  Jun 17, 2014 ]
I use my unit w an iphone, so idk about the galaxy. That said, bluetooth should work regardless of which phone it is, i believe. [ Jorge  Jun 16, 2014 ]
Can you be more specific? Can you get it to connect with Bluetooth at all? Can you make and send phone calls? Are you having a problem with the Pandora app on the radio? My wife has an S5 that I can use to mess with. I currently use an HTC ONE and it work fine. [ DOUGLASS J  Jun 16, 2014 ]
I didn't have to do an update to get mine to work but I did have to get into the settings on BOTH the S5 and the AVH-4000NEX to get it working. I think they make it simpler for the Iphone. [ Kevin  Jun 16, 2014 ]
I don't have an S5 but as it's a very new device it should absolutely work. My only guess is that you may need to go into your S5's Bluetooth settings, select the device and see if there are settings for what features are enabled. [ Jeremy  Jun 16, 2014 ]

Hi Andrew. Sorry to hear that you have an S4. Lol I have an iPhone. So I really couldn't answer your question. I can say that it works great with the iPhone and I can't wait until Pioneer gets the firm wear update to add Apple Car Play to the HU. Good Luck. [ TERRENCE  May 21, 2014 ]
You are going to need a micro USB to hdmi cable, but not necessarily the MHL cable from samsung. I bought both, but I only use the other cable. That cable is needed so the phone talks to the HU. However, there is only a small list of apps that work with appradio. You can go to the pioneer website to see which ones are. But something like netflix will absolutely will not work "naturally" in the appradio. And the only apps you can control are the approved ones. There are other ways to do a full mirror/control of your phone. Your phone will have to bee rooted and the appradio app unchained in order to do that. I hope this helps. [ David  May 20, 2014 ]
Andrew - Still working everything out as I just started installing the 4000NEX over the weekend. Crutchfield has been very helpful along the way but the information across the board is a bit lacking from Pioneer. I have a Galaxy Note 2 and the CD-AH200 adapter kit. The 4000NEX and the CD-AH200 instructions both show connections to the S4 or Note 2 without the use of a 5-11 pin adapter (I believe that's the MHL piece from Samsung you're referencing). To further confuse the issue the instructions in the AVH-4000NEX show a slightly different set of instructions than the CD-AH200 (the head unit says the HDMI and USB cables should be plugged directly into the head unit; the AH200 instructions want the HDMI cable plugged into the head unit but the included USB power block wired to the ground and switched power) I couldn't get the head unit to recognize the phone in either configuration but the phone would charge both ways. I phoned Crutchfield and they instructed me that I would need a 5-11 pin MHL adapter. In fairness this is mentioned in Crutchfield's item description AND my advisor told me I'd need one before I ordered - I didn't see it mentioned in Pioneers instructions so I decided to soldier on with out it. Long story short I ordered one yesterday and will see how everything works when it arrives. The Samsung part number for the current adapter is EPL-FU10BEGSTA. Via the MHL connection you are able to use the Appradio features, but MirrorLink is only available on a handful of phones (3?) and via Pioneers MirrorLink adapter. Reviews led me to pass on it as it seems it is sensitive to Android firmware versions and not fully sorted at the moment. I can't comment on your other questions at the moment as I'm waiting on the Samsung adapter to arrive but I'll try to follow up with my findings are all of your questions are ones I couldn't find answers to before ordering. As with every other purchase I've made Crutchfield's help has done all they can for me. [ Brett  May 19, 2014 ]
Yes you need the MHL adaptor from Samsung. Also look into an app called AppRadioUnchained. Its awesome [ GUITZE  May 19, 2014 ]
HDMI link with an iPhone will work but you have do some research on how to enable in motion. Apple's CarPlay should remedy this once released. [ Jim  Jul 25, 2014 ]
I have not installed the radio yet so I can not give you an answer,I plan on getting it done soon I will let you know [ JAMES  Apr 23, 2014 ]
So far, I haven't been able to figure out any way to use any maps apps without shutting off the music. So, it does work, but.... not in the way I wanted/assumed it would. [ ERIK  Apr 22, 2014 ]
