Pioneer DEH-4400HD

Radio's not the only thing that'll sound better
It's no stretch to say that the sound of Pioneer receivers is legendary. This receiver's conservatively rated MOSFET amplifier uses special transistors to ensure strong full-range output that stands with any car stereo on the market — you'll hear solid lows and crisp highs from all your music sources. And you'll like the flexibility that the 3-band equalizer offers for dialing in just the right sound for your car and your taste.

More music choices
If you don't listen to the radio all the time, you'll appreciate the range of options this receiver offers. Plug an iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input and you'll be able to use your receiver's controls to zip through your songs and playlists. With a 1-amp output, the USB port will keep your device fully charged even through periods of heavy usage.

You'll also find an auxiliary input, so you can plug in Dock & Play satellite radios, game consoles, and other devices. And, if you like CDs, this stereo will handle all your CDs, as well as discs or thumb drives you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files.

Want to keep your steering wheel coan adapter (not included)  ntrols?
In most vehicles you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

This is hard to use. If I want to play my mp3's by gender, I better pull over to do it safely. Takes too much concentration to do while driving. Speakers that were matched to play with this clip at 1/2 volume. CD player skips over railroad tracks, old Pioneer didn't.

    Pros: Easy to install.

Cons: Purchased with (4) MTX TN502 5.25" Coaxial Speakers (5-35W). They start to clip at 1/2 volume. CD player skips. Hard to use.

I really like this radio. The color change feature is why i bought this radio because i wanted to match it to my gauges. Sounds good and it is of fairly decent quality.

Pros: Good quality. Fairly easy to use.

Cons: USB plug in play is a pain to use thru the radio interface.

    Pretty good so far

Joe from Charlotte, NC on 8/14/2013

I got this radio from an online auction site after researching it on this site. The variable colors are a plus. Turning the volume past 37 is a big change! I got it professionally installed yesterday. It fits, but there is a minor gap in the trim below the air vents. I had wondered if it would support the separate tweeters looking at the wires; I seem to have lost the driver's side in the process. As a bass-appreciator, it is not as "punchy" as the factory's. I am planning on replacing the old speakers at some point. I figured out the controls within 5 minutes, the return button is my friend. I really like the multiple input options: aux for Sirius and USB for thumb/iPhone 5. The HD radio does cut out unexpectedly, but I can't wait to use it when I travel again. The Matrix-like display is very nice and the removable face comes out with my Sirius radio.

Pros: The display is very nice with the customizable colors. Input options keep me from dependence on a FM transmitter.

Cons: Not a perfect fit compared to factory's.

Slow getting started setting it up because it's not as user friendly as I have had in the past but it has WAY more features! Love the changing display/button colors! Love the USB that charges in the front! Love being able to operate my iphone and ipod from the stereo and being able to search artists, playlists, songs, etc. from the stereo.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound is really good. I can hear instrumental parts I couldn't hear before. But after two emails to Pioneer and one call to Crutchfield, both companies being quite helpful, I've learned how to change or adjust or use it, but I'm still figuring out how to find where things are in the FM bands, for example, this despite spending hours trying to figure it out. Also, the display is usually too dim to be seen in sunlight. I like the way the unit sounds, but it is hard to learn.

Pros: Good sound quality. Wonderful bass. Versatile ability to switch to using rear speakers as the subwoofer. Good support from Crutchfield and from Pioneer.

Cons: Volume knob doesn't always adjust the volume. Display is hard or impossible to see. Controls are not intuitive.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The DEH 4400 was better than the Sony CDX-GT700HD at picking up HD signals even though the sony had a lower dbf. Non HD FM was better on the Sony. However, the DEH 4400 did drop the HD frequently so I returned it for a Kenwood KDC-HD455U which picked up HD a little better than the Pioneer but held the signals much better so much less fade outs which becomes irritating. Liked it so much that I bought a 2nd one as backup. Also pioneer did not play ipod tunes copied to a usb drive whereas the KW did. My main concern was FM reception and it met my expectations.

Pros: Many display colors, front USB, plays ipod tunes on usb drive, price

    Cons: none

Mark M from Troy, ID on 3/9/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an inexpensive Receiver/player and it does exactly what it says it will do. If you want a thumpin' system this isn't it. I had no trouble using my iphone 5 in it, the CD player works great, the radio pulls in stations as well, but not better than the stock receiver. The big problem with this unit is that the user interface is not intuitive at all andI had to spend 45 minutes on the phone w/ Crutchfield Tech support (They were great) just to figure it out. The problem is that sometimes you use the MFC (multi-function control) to change between options, select options, and choose the option. But sometimes you use the left-right arrows to do that and sometimes you press the MFC. It seems that there is no rhyme nor reason to when you which control. I use computers, iphones, ipads, high end audio applications and have rarely had to call tech support. So to me if I can't figure out a radio in just a few minutes, it is not well designed.

Pros: Solid value for the price. It was easy to install and the kits Crutchfield sells to make it look professionally installed were perfect (though the directions that came with them were useless) I had to figure out all the hard questions without the help.

Cons: user interface is inconsistent and confusing. The "flames" that the display shows in attempt to be cool aren't. User manual is not helpful. It is full of information you don't need and missing most of what you do. It should have menu flowcharts!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing is great! Installed in less than an hour. Had one question about the wiring- called a tech at Crutchfield and he led me straight. Really impressed with the HD radio. Like many new tech toys of today, can't figure how I lived without for so long. The programming was not as bad as others have suggested. Read the manual folks. Follow the directions. It's not rocket science.

Pros: Ease of installation. Crutchfield's got your back if you need it. Like the face and the fact that the clock stays on even when not in use.

Cons: Might have to get another one in my other vehicle now that this one has spoiled me!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this radio! Great product for the price. Sounds great listening to AM HD and FM HD. MP3 files on CDs are really nice too. I was looking for a system to upgrade the factory system in my '11 Dodge Dakota, but didn't want to spend a mint. Even with the factory speakers, this one was the best solution for me. I haven't owned a Pioneer since the Super Tuner 2 8-Track I had in my '76 Camaro. So I'd forgotten how good Pioneer products sound. Menus are a little tricky, so it's necessary to keep the manual nearby when setting it up. Gonna take a little time to get used to some of the button functions.

Pros: Great sound. Easy installation. Seems well made.

Cons: Knocked it down one star in the "Ease of Use" category due to the leaning curve with the menus.

Looking through CD/Receivers, I chose the DEH-4400HD because it provided the color choices for display and button, esp. red for night driving. Display is bright even when dimmed - brighter than the OEM lights on the dash. NOISE: No ignition or wiper motor noise at all. SOUND: Fr: 6.5 coax Memphis 15-PRC62, Rr: 6.75 coax JL Audio TR-650CXi (was Sony XS-6026, no difference in sound when compared to the JLs) HU provides VERY clear mid & highs. Plenty of clean power without an amp, but.. (1) I have to increase volume from 10-14 to 22-28 on the freeway. That's two to three turns with the knob. (2) Road noise kills the bass. (3) Loudness 1 or 2 is too much (IMO) at volume settings higher than 12. It adds too much mid-range. EQ adjustments are needed with loudness on. Crutchfield advisor recommended a compact sub woofer to slip under the seat, but I think for all that cabling I'll just add an Alpine KTP445U, which should fix the lack of gain in the volume control. INSTALL: 92 Saturn SL2 has a plastic rear support with a square hole for OEM radio chassis post. Drill 1/4" holes across at that line and punch out the rear to clear the way. HU is 1/16th shy of touching duct work. Install kit requires cutting some extra tabs from bracket and trimplate which is difficult with just a sharp knife. MENUS: Practice, practice... Station memory is easy to set, or use the scan feature. Compact flash menus are intuitive.

Pros: Very pleased coming from the OEM world of 20 years ago. Feature filled for the price. Good sound clarity with no detectable electrical noise. Fully adjustable display and button colors which are bright. With practice, menu navigation proficiency comes quickly.

Cons: Nothing specific to this HU, when compared to the HU class it falls in. For SL2's, you may consider adding a SW or an amp or both. I'll review the Alpine KTP-445U afterwards to see if it makes a difference in the bass within the full-range speaker environment and also for volume gain.

Overall I love this radio. It has all of the features that I was looking for at a reasonable price. The operation does take a little garage time as others have mentioned and the demo mode is very annoying. I thought that I had it turned off, but drove around all day with changing colors, messages, blinking wavy lines etc. That night, I went back into the manual and found the instructions to make sure that the demo was turned off - stupid feature. Please include the manual if you sell your vehicle for the poor soul that would try to operate without it. The USB connection is probably my favorite followed by the HD radio. I loaded tons of songs on a flash drive and the unit shows all information just like an iPod. The HD radio is nice because Atlanta radio has very little good rock stations so at least I have a few other options to listen to including comedy and other classic rock stations. The color display selection is very nice and allowed me to match the OEM digital display of the climate control system for a factory look.

Pros: Great features: USB, HD Radio, Aux connection, CD Good power and nice display color selections

Cons: REALLY need the manual to learn how to operate.

Installation was really simple. I was referred to Crutchfield by a couple friends and also read the best reviews from the website. Just finished up installation tonight on the radio itself. If there is one thing I love it's a friendly professional company and Crutchfield has exceeded with this. Their tech support is amazing. I had a few issues that were resolved on the phone. I wasn't planning on tearing back into the project and fixing it then as I have a cold and losing my voice, but the rep ALAN made me feel confident enough in the amount of time it would take and I got it done in no time. I am very pleased with this radio, it has every function I need and then some for anything I want to add on later. I am pairing it with three way Pioneer speakers in the front. I can't say enough how simple it was to do and how much I love Crutchfield. I will always buy and install with them from here on out. This company has earned my business for a lifetime. I had some doubts in the beginning but once I saw the ticket price at car toys I knew I could do it for a lot cheaper in my own truck and get enjoyment and satisfaction in doing it myself, and I'm glad I did. If I had any bumps along the way it wasn't anything I couldn't get resolved quickly with Crutchfield. Again, the tech support is truly outstanding and I would recommend them to anyone, young or old.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my factory radio in my Pontiac Vibe with this about a month ago. It has better sound with more adjustability and neat display but the menu leaves much to be desired. Instructions require lots of reading between the lines, not straight forward at all and settings depend a lot on menu start conditions. Takes A LOT of 'garage/parked' time figuring it out; messing with it while driving is equivalent to texting with a Crackberry! Worse, it's so easy to lose settings! I've already 'hit the wrong key' twice and had to reprogram ALL the settings! Save the manual, you'll need it! In fact, go to the Pioneer website and download it PDF for a back-up. I really wish it had a simple ON/OFF switch; instead, you have to press & hold the SRC button every time I start the car to shut it OFF because it always comes ON automatically. Took me almost 9 hours to install, by the time I managed to deal with all the 'little details' the instructions gloss over. While testing it outside of dash, noticed the underside felt quite warm; given the disposable quality corporate philosophy these days, I hope it lasts! AM is now weaker with more static than before, forget distant stations. However, it's a small loss given the other gains. Probably the antenna cable adapter you have to install has something to do with it. Main reason I got this is because it has CD, HD radio, USB & AUX inputs with great sound. At that, it does very long as I don't upset the settings accidentally.

Pros: Great, very adjustable sound. Cool display Many source inputs: CD, HD radio, USB, AUX, AM/FM. Good value for price

Cons: Too complicated a menu, easy to loose settings.

Sounds very good! Yes I know that as a low-middle of the road it's not going to sound like a $700 reciever and since I was pairing it with new Pioneer speakers (6.5") , it's never going to sound like a audiophile home system. It' going in a 16 year old Jeep, and even with these speakers, the doors shake. It sounds 10 times better than the Infinity system with paper cone speakers.......It could be easier to operate but for the money, it can't be touched...

Pros: Great sound, looks good and you can match the colors to your dash.

Cons: could be easier to operate...

Bought this to replace another Pioneer that died after 5 years of se4rvice. Hope this one will last longer. The sound is nice and I think it was worth the asking price. As for ease of use.... in today's world of computing and what have you, why can't they make it more simple to program this thing?!!! I am still playing with this and eventually I will learn all of the ins and outs. The manual could have been better written. The kit I had to send back because I didn't need it. I used the harness from previous install and it worked fine. When I initially looked at this radio the Crutchfield site said it wouldn't fit. But it did. Easily. I don't really care for all that "coolness" because I don't mess with settings while driving. "Cause I may never reach my destination if I do.

Pros: Nice sound and HD is nice to have, if it comes with it. It wasn't a deciding factor.

Cons: Manual and setup could be much better, easier to read and do.

I was replacing an off-brand receiver/CD in my Jeep that had stopped working & picked up the DEH-4400HD for this purpose. Though the wiring diagrams weren't too clear, I sorted out the wiring by color coding & installed the unit in 2 hours. It worked completely as advertised; the remote was a plus, as was the ability to customize display color & the added auxiliary front panel inputs. The audio adjustments were somewhat limited (equalizer), but otherwise I was completely satisfied.

Pros: Installation neat, many features for the money, good sound, remote a plus

Cons: Instructions somewhat vague, may need electronic experience to install. Limited equalizer settings, may need intermediate equalizer for fine tuning of music ranges.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 12 year old car finally needed a decent upgrade, stereo-wise. I ultimately chose this one. I don't regret the choice. It makes music sound way better on the stock speakers, though by level 50, distortion starts to be noticeable, but I blame the speakers for that. I love the iPod control and that you can scan through playlists using the stereo. My one gripe is that it has three banks of FM channel presets (FM 1, 2, & 3), and only one can be used to switch to the alternate HD channel. Speaking of which, I bought this stereo with the hope of listening to all sorts of alternate HD channels, only to find out very few provide such programming. So I'm bummed about that. My only other gripe is on Crutchfield. When I got the package I discovered that I needed either a soldering iron or wire caps to do the work. It would be nice if some instructions would be given on the site of what I will need to have to do the work. Us novices, who have never done this kind of work would appreciate it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a good basic upgrade to my factory stereo and didn't want to spend a ton of money. I think that is the case with many shoppers looking at this price point. The Pioneer DEH-4400HD had some great features for the money, and as silly as it sounds, it's nice to have a remote for quick tuning and skip features. Upgrading to the HD Radio is also a bonus. I don't typically listen to a bunch of radio stations, but I do listen a bit more now that a few are offered in HD format. You really can tell the difference in the sound quality. The USB/iPod feature is a nice addition's easy to just load up a USB memory drive with music, plug it in and within seconds you can shuffle through hundreds of songs. If you prefer more control to playlists, you can use your iPod and also control it pretty easily with this radio. All in's a great upgrade and well worth the investment. This was my first radio installation and the included instructions were fairly simple to follow, but I did have to look up some videos on YouTube to gain a better understanding of how the dash panel and connections came off. Only feedback might be to have a little more detail in the step by step instructions and a few more pictures for us beginners. But hey, I'm one of those guys that hates to call customer service for help!

Pros: Great value, good price point for an upgrade from stock radio. Great sound quality is a major upgrade vs. stock radio too. Front panel USB and AUX inputs are great, as is the remote. HD radio function provides a major sound improvement - even for AM talk radio.

Cons: Display is sometimes difficult to read in daylight.

They installed the receiver in the dash of the pickup in about 10 minutes (the old radio had already been removed by the truck's previous owner.) Can't say enough about the quality of the technical support I received and the professionalism of the people I spoke to on the phone. I called twice: first, just to verify my order - it was nice to know that I had everything I'd need for my little weekend project. The second was because I had an issue after my installation - the tuner reception was extremely poor. The tech listened to my issue and immediately told me what I needed to do (installation instructions led me to believe that I didn't need to connect the power antenna / power amp wire for my application - but I did as this powers the antenna amp in my case - something the tech was able to tell me right away). Excellent customer experience. Order shipped promptly, arrived on time, and there was plenty of communication on the status of my shipment.

Pros: Outstanding value in sound quality considering price. Good upgrade vs. stock radio. Front panel USB and AUX inputs are a huge modernization for my old 2001 Honda S2000. Reads MP3 files on my Android phone without issue. HD radio function provides a major sound improvement - even for AM talk radio. RDS is nice extra.

Cons: Only 3 equalizer bands. Display difficult to see in bright sunlight due to glossy cover over display panel & lack of brightness of display - display is fine in all other conditions. Those looking for outstanding sound quality should look elsewhere - this unit is more about delivering good sound at a value price.

I recently purchased this setup to replace my 2001 Mazda 626 factory stereo. My purchase came with all the tools needed for installation (DIN tools, adaptors, wires, manuals, etc.) My dad and I had it hooked up in a few hours (took so long because we had a hard time taking the old stereo out!) It makes my factory speakers (also Pioneer brand) sound 10x better. The manual is pretty easy to follow when looking up the settings for all the functions. The only two hiccups I've had with this system so far is that the M.C. knob is pretty touchy; it takes quite a few turns to turn the volume up or down. I wouldn't even mess with the knob when adjusting the volume, just use the remote - it's so much easier! And the other slight issue is the Clock Set feature is kinda hard to figure out. I had to whip out the manual three or four times just to remind me of what exactly I had to do. I haven't used the iPod aux/USB plugins yet. Other than that, it's a very stylish, functional stereo. The colors are fun to play with - I just have mine set on SCAN and it goes through all 30 color combinations! You can have fun with this function for hours (maybe...) Pioneer has always been good to me and this did not disappoint.

Pros: Color feature for the buttons and display, installation, remote controlled, HD radio compatible, plugin for iPod, attractive setup, beefs up sound quality of factory speakers

Cons: Touchy M.C. knob, hard time figuring out CLOCK SET and turning DEMO mode off

I bought this unit as a replacement for a nine year old Clarion DXZ635MP that I could no longer play a cd on. When I saw the price of the Pioneer and the features, I was suprised about how much I could get for my money. The installion did not seem to take long and it was fully compatable with my speakers so I didn't have to replace any of the speakers that I put in the car. It is pretty easy to use and it has many functions. The usb port is nice because you can get flash drives very cheap and you could load up tons of great music on them. I have found it very easy to scroll through folders and files on the flash drive in order to get what I want. The radio was very easy to program and I like the HD radio on it. As soon as I turned the HD Seek to the on setting, I was getting more radio stations than I ever was able ot get before. The biggest knock that I read on this unit was that it is hard to see in daylight but a lot of radios are like that. I did notcie that if I have my ray ban sunglasses on, then it gets harder to see the display but if i take them off, then I can see the display okay even in sunlight. Overall it is a nice radio for the price. I do not think it has as much power as my old Clarion since i have to put the volume up higher than I did on my old radio but the sound quality is good. If this last as long as my Clarion (nine years), I will be happy with the pioneer. As of right now, i would recommend this unit to a friend.

Pros: The main pro is the HD radio as it gives you more radio stations to listen to so if some have commericals, there are others that will be playing some music. Another pro is the USb port on the front. I guess that if the cd drive ever were to break, I can still load up a 16 or 32gb flash and still hear all of my rock and roll! The other pro is that there was almost no learning time with this and that was something I was nervous about. This is a very easy systme to use and rock out to!

Cons: The only con that I am finding is that it is not as loud as i thought it would be. I seem to have to keep the volume in the upper twenties to hear it good when I am driving as opposed to my old Clarion DXZ635MP that i could put the volume on 15 or 16 and have it blasting while I drive. The only other potential con that I have noticed is that when I take out my USB drive, the unit shuts off instead of going back to the radio. However touching the power button brings it back to radio.

    Great unit for the price!

I have only had this unit for a couple of weeks now but I think I have a good idea of how I feel about it. First of all it is a great unit for the price and features included. Price was a big consideration as was HD Radio. I never had HD radio before but I will tell you now that I have heard it, there is a BIG difference compared to analog radio. I looked at a lot of stereos and none of them had everything I wanted so any choice was a compromise. I chose this unit because it had most everything I wanted, included built in HD radio and with a great price. I would highly recommend this unit for a low price choice with great features.

Pros: Variable colors (requirement) Variable loudness (desired) HD Radio (requirement) Radio Data System functions (requirement) USB connectivity (requirement) Preset radio station buttons (requirement) iPod control by unit or iPod (desired) Pre-out for front and rear amps (requirement) Good FM Sensitivity (requirement) Scrolling display (desired) Great sound power and clarity (requirement)

Cons: Only 3 band equalizer (really wanted 5 or more) No auto dimmer connection (really wanted, didn't know it was missing until after purchase) No rear USB (desired) Only displays info or clock, not both (really wanted, didn't know it was missing until after purchase) Display color doesn't quite match button color (Oh well)

I agree it's a great sounding Receiver, and love the HD radio. I have no problems with reception. Stations come in real clear. It replaced my factory 6-cd in dash changer in my 02' escape. Sound is real good even with the factory speakers. Mounting kit and Instructions, and wiring harness Crutchfield provided were excellent and very easy to understand. I have to get used to the menus and features. If I had any minor issue it would be that the Tone Control be a little easier to get to in the menu. But like I said, I'm still in the learning stage and just have to mess with it a little more. But really once the Tone control is set, I don't have the need to really mess with it cause every radio station and MP3 and CD comes in clear and consistant. I guess most radio stations broadcast in HD now and it's kinda cool cause I tune in a station, and 2 seconds later the display says something like "97.9 HD", cause it's a HD station, and it comes in real clear and has a nice CD Quality sound. I already had someone get in the car and ask me "is that a CD" when a song was playing. Radio sound is that good.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product was a very easy install. The DOT matrix screen is neat. The color changing options are neat and are actually quite advanced. This unit replaced my stock head unit. I did not replace my stock 4 speakers, and it sounds MUCH better with this Pioneer unit. My favorite part is the USB functionality. 4 GB flash drive reads instantly, has obviously higher quality, and seek times are INSTANT. The search button is extremely useful when you're looking for that favorite song, artist, or album. The Advanced Sound Retriever makes a world of difference with MP3 files. iPad functionality was awesome when using Pandora via Verizon 3G on the road. HD radio is neat. Definitely makes a positive difference in sound. Unit is also pushing a Pioneer GM-D8500M with two Kicker Comp 12" subs. Sounds amazing. Excellent buy!

Pros: DOT Matrix Screen, color options, USB functionality with great audio and instant seek times, search functionality, iPad works great. Head unit remember placement of song via USB even if you've turned off the car or taken off the cover of the head unit. That's pretty freaking cool to me ha. Random setting is great.

Cons: An option to change how rapidly the colors change on "scan" mode would be great. Maybe even an option to reverse the colors on the screen and buttons. More visual options for the screen would have been nice. The "Matrix" looking setting is neat, and could have been improved upon.

I replaced my OEM radio that had a defective CD player with this Pioneer. I find it to be good value for HD radio with all the other options. Some of the other reviews have complained about radio reception but I have found it to be very good! much more so than the OEM radio in the car. I'm not so sure about how I like all the controls though. You must hold down the mode button to turn it off. (weird)

Pros: Good reception, quality sound, many extras, very reasonable price, easy Crutchfield install

Cons: Some of the controls are a bit weird, like turning the radio off... you have to hold down the mode button.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my Pioneer! I put it in a Jeep Wrangler that is topless and doorless all summer. This unit has plenty of power to drive past all the noise of air, traffic, etc. When I replace my speakers with some higher quality, it'll be even better. I would buy this unit again in a heartbeat and have recommended it to many friends.

Pros: Good power, plenty of volume. The USB and AUX port makes this unit phenomenal. I have put a CD in it one time since I've had it because all my music is now MP3 format on thumb drives--multiple albums that I can switch between on each drive. The AUX is wonderful when using Pandora and other apps on my Android phone. No need to Blue tooth with these options. Besides, who can talk on the phone in a topless Jeep driving down the highway at 70mph?! Plus, it has a nice remote control that works!

Cons: The volume button is also the menu button; turn for volume and push for menu options. The problem is, while in a bouncy Jeep, I almost always put the button in while trying to turn the volume up or down. That's the only frustrating thing I've found. THANK GOODNESS for the REMOTE CONTROL!

I love you can change the key and display colours with a extensive colour options [which is made possible with the custom colour choice. The sound quality is very nice. I'm still learning how to use it..but hey...It is worth the price. However, It is hard to see the display screen during the day. The build quality is quite lovely. What I also love is the iPod integration and the option of USB and AUX. I'm also loving the HD Radio.

Pros: Pretty much the whole thing..except a few factors. [Colours, HD Radio, iPod Integration, Detachable Faceplate, Sound Quality..etc]

Cons: - Screen is hard to read during the day - The menus are confusing even when reading the manual. ..that's probably all that I can come up with at this time.

I like the various ports and the ability to change the button colors. But the main knob is to short for large-ish hands to use easily and it is too slippery also. It needs a strip of rubber on it for a better grip. I think I would have gotten a different model had I been able to get a hands-on review first. Good thing it's not in my daily driver. The FM signal is not as good as the factory (Honda) radio.

I installed this radio a few days ago and instantly fell in love with it. The more i used it though, i noticed a few minor (but very annoying) design flaws. The knob doesnt protrude out beyond the navigation buttons nearly enough and has absolutely no grip! Another thing is that the hotkey number buttons are much too soft and i ended up having to push them several times before the operation was recognized. The good? Definitely the dot matrix screen. Its super visible and has an eye popping sequence when playing CDs. Also; navigation among the menus was silky smooth. I found the sound quality to be okay but nowhere near as rich as the $80 dollar Kenwood this has replaced!

Pros: Awesome display and easy navigation.

Cons: Slippery knob, cheap number buttons and okay sound. I also had a heck of a time removing the faceplate!

Great radio for the price. Buttons are very small though. HD tuning takes a few seconds to kick in, not sure if that is normal or not? It's my first HD radio. Sound quality is good, I'm sure it will get better when I upgrade my 15 year old speakers. Only real complaints is that when I have sunglasses on (a good pair of polarized ones), the screen is almost impossible to read. And if the sun shines on it, forget about it. Can't read a thing. Also, if there is a USB stick in the unit, whenever it powers up it will go directly to that source, even if you had the stick in the radio before shutting it off and the input was different.

Pros: Great price, features work well, good sound quality

Cons: Screen is hard to read.

This is just as expected from the Pioneer brand, excellent! The only thing that is slightly annoying to me is that the volume knob, which also allows you to enter the menu / set-up area is somewhat touchy, meaning that sometimes when I want to adjust the volume, I press the knob before I start to turn the knob, and then again, maybe I'm just not fully used to it yet!! None the less, a great buy and I am completely satisfied with this unit!

Overall, this is a great value HD Stereo for your money. It's got the aux port, usb port, iPod controls, and all the items of your usual stereo. For the most part it is an awesome deck, but be prepared to spend a half-hour or so getting used to the navigation and all the different options this thing presents to you. Once I did that, I've really been enjoying this unit. Installation was pretty simple, especially getting everything from this site, though there were some bumps and snags getting it just right.

Pros: Aux/USB ports; decent interface; the color changing options are just wicked, especially with settings that allow the colors to change without even messing with the color options. Overall easy to install, good sound quality.

Cons: The display can be hard to read, even when you have the color set to white, in instances of extreme brightness or sun glare. Menu navigation can be tricky the first few times you use the unit.

I ordered this online on a Sunday evening, arrived Tuesday afternoon, installed before dark that same day. The instructions provided by Crutchfield to remove my existing factory-installed unit (on a '98 Dodge Grand Caravan) were right on. Being color blind the wiring harness was a challenge but as usual I got help with that. I used Posi Lock connectors, simple to use, strong and I've never had one come loose. I needed a basic unit, this was it, well priced too. The HD radio is a bonus, clear as a bell. I use the audio input jack with my MP3 player. As others have said, it's not super intuitive but once you spend a little time to figure it out, it's fine. The manual that came with it is printed too small for my old eyes, but I was able to print it out bigger using the PDF file, nicely provided as a link by Crutchfield. You won't go wrong with this one.

The color display is a great bonus to have, station reception is solid. This is a keeper.

Pros: Great AM and FM signal sensitivity, HD is clear and stable, Sound for all bands, CD is clear, many features like easy navigation , legible display day and night, can operate radio without looking down after brief familiarization.

Cons: Owner's Manual too vague on Fade/Balance and Dislplay setup. Intuitive playing around gets you there quicker and easier than manual instructions.

It too is beautiful, it does a great job of giving a lot of depth to any genre of music, the HD radio transmission lines up perfectly with the standard FM transmission which gives clean switching between the two, and it does not distort sound. Would deff recommend!

First experience with Crutchfield and it was a good one. Item arrived quickly, well packed. Install instructions and wiring harness made it easy. I picked the Pioneer DEH-4400HD because of good reviews and the ability to use memory sticks for media. No cords, charging music player, or worries about losing ipod. Everyone in my family has a thumb drive with their music and we take turns playing that music. Sound quality a huge improvement over Subaru factory cd player even with stock speakers. Everyone in the family thought I also got new speakers. If you've used any menu driven electronics it takes about ten minutes of messing around to master this deck. Overall good radio reception here in Seattle area. Glad I got the HD radio, lots of options in Seattle. The option to customize the display colors is cool but once you get a setting you like you probably won't tweak them again. Factory EQ settings are decent and easy to change when switching genres. I'm one of those guys who still plays cd's and this deck sounds great playing them. Great detail. I'm a bit of an audio snob having high-end equipment at home. This upgrade makes my commutes so much more pleasant, the sound is really pretty decent.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a new radio to replace the factory cassette player in my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee and narrowed it down to a few choices. I knew that I wanted a detachable faceplate, a CD , and an iPod connection. This radio fit the bill and for the price that Crutchfield offered it for including free shipping, free wiring harness, free DIN sleeve mounting plate, & free master sheet wiring diagram, I just couldn't go wrong!! It installed fairly easy thanks to all the goodies that Crutchfield threw in and after attaching the final trim piece on my dash, I was as proud as a peacock!! Then I turned it on and couldn't pulling three stations!! I can still hear my kids laughing at me. "Great radio Dad. Pioneer Stoopid- tuner" they were calling it. I went from being as proud as a peacock to madder than a wet hen!! I quickly figured out that an antenna connection in back of the passenger side kick-pad was disconnected. I plugged that in and, BAM!!! I was blasting the kids out of the back of my Jeep with D'yer Maker by Led Zepplin!!! That will teach ya you little snot-nosed rugrats!!! It wasn't long before the kids were fighting over the remote and scanning for Justin Beaver. They loved the way the display can change colors but it just made me feel like Clay Aiken. Enough rainbows for me. I want Classic Rock and I want it LOUD!!! The menu can be a little confusing but once you have it down its easy. Its nice to know that even after all these years, Pioneer still Rocks!

Pros: Great features packed into a small radio. Sub woofer control, Ext. Amp. control, iPod connection, CD for us old timers, removable face for those of us who are still in the slumming it!

Cons: The one and ONLY complaint I have is that I couldnt find a Pioneer case for my detachable face-plate. I know Crutchfield sells a soft case but Im not a soft-case kinda guy if ya know what I mean. I hand a case I can stick in my back pocket and not have to worry about crushing or snapping the faceplate if I sit on it. I guess I'll just have to dig around fro a hard case that fits this radio. Otherwise, NO complaints

Just replaced an 11 year old Pioneer CD deck with this and new Pioneer front and rear speakers on a 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport. First of all the sound is LOUD and CLEAR. Unbelievable comparing this to the much older and reliable deck. I love the multi color display. You can mix and customize button and display colors or randomize them. Installation was simple and easy thanks to the free mount and wire harnesses from Crutchfield. Have not heard HD radio yet. Anyway it's a great stereo and does not disappoint.

Pros: Great sound/ Remote control/ Color customization/ Aux input

I've owned many Pioneer decks in the past and this one is built well like the others. Internal power for door and rear speakers work well. Would have been nice to have a more adjustable EQ - My previous deck was better in this regard. Works well with USB flash drives - HD Radio tuner was also a nice upgrade over my previous deck. Replaced an existing aftermarket deck (Pioneer) and the install took 10 minutes. No surprises Fast delivery, well packaged, with good documentation. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Cost - HD Radio - USB Input for MP3

Cons: Sound Shaping is somewhat lacking - needs better EQ control!

I absolutely love this stereo. My friend and I put it into my Corolla in no time flat. The install was easy, the sound quality is fantastic, and let's face it--the ability to change the display colors is just freaking cool. The unit is a little difficult to get used to operating at first, but with time it becomes a little more familiar. The iPod/USB port works well, and I like that it has a cover to protect the port when not in use.

Pros: Easy install with the master sheet, FANTASTIC sound quality, remote control...need I say more?

Cons: The display can sometimes be hard to see during the day, the controls take a while to get the hang of using

Pioneer still has it! Installed in Jeep Wrangler

.:eMETAL:. from Midcoast, Maine on 3/26/2012

Purchased a 99 Jeep Wrangler with a crappy el cheapo JVC unit in it. After upgrading my speakers I realized the JVC just didn't have what it took to deliver the sound I needed. Found this unit locally but purchased through Crutchfield after reading the great reviews. I did a lot of stereo installs when I was younger and always found Pioneer to prove themselves time and time again so I was hopeful their quality was still up to par and I can definitely say they still deliver AMAZING sound clarity and product quality. This unit is well built and brought my Polk speakers to life times-a-million! I can't say enough about this stereo, with the top down and doors off the Wrangler, I can still hear the sound perfectly without any distortion whatsoever!, that in itself says A LOT about a unit and speakers! Controls are a pretty basic but at times I find myself hitting the incorrect button taking me out of a menu screen but that's just me in training I guess and not enough to discount more than 1 star. Was very excited to learn that my iPhone4s charges while I have it plugged into the usb port, and also excited to learn that Pandora easily controls through the stereo. Bottom line, if you're looking for sound clarity and a great look that is built with quality LOOK NO FURTHER! For all you Jeep guys and gals out there, couple this with some Polk speakers and you'll be way more than satisfied!

Pros: SOUND is INCREDIBLE! Coolness Factor. Built like a tank!

This radio fit my vehicle beautifully as I expected, despite what the car fit guide said (be sure you know your specs before buying). I found it easy to setup, though I had to get used to the new button layout. The HD channels I receive sound beautiful, as well as the regular radio stations. I am loving the USB mp3 capability, and already have setup a micro flash drive filled with a few hundred songs burned from my aging CD collection. The additional power the radio sends to my factory speakers makes them sound better than they really are - I'm sill gonna replace them though =) .

Pros: HD radio, Detachable Face, Multicolor display and buttons, USB plug, front & rear aux plug, MP3 capability from either CD or flash drive, easy menu system, remote control, more power to the speakers!

Cons: Adjusting to new button layout, as compared the factory stereo I had. Nothing else.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I work in the radio industry as an engineer, and wanted a radio that allows me to see RDS data, pickup HD signals and monitor the stations I work on. This unit is more glitz than guts. While the unit does pick up RDS, it does not offer the ability to see RT (Radio Text) info. So you miss out on data the station is sending. Also, the volume knob is too easily pressed in, causing you to go into the setup of the unit. So as you drive down the road, you bump it and now you have to start looking at the unit in order to get back to the volume adjust. Not good. The selection of colors in the display is nice, but the fact it only shows one line of info in the display at any time means it wastes gobs of space that could go to multiple lines of data that you want to see (like title, artist, album, station, etc). I bought this unit because it was the least expensive unit that did both RDS and HD, and the low price shows. While I have not yet tried the USB function or the aux input, I am already disappointed. It's not intuitive and leaves much to be desired. I will probably look at Kenwoods gear next and consider getting a unit that does RDS and add the optional HD tuner, and add a manual cutoff so I can swap between RDS and the HD tuner. I am still hoping that at some point the manufacturers will wake up and make a unit like some clock radios now that does it all. Sadly, this unit doesn't.

Pros: Picks up HD Radio stations, RDS data from analog radio stations and has a USB input and Aux input (for smartphone or ipod audio.) Colors that back-light display can be adjusted to numerous combinations. Can preset HD2, HD3 stations

Cons: Terribly menu layout, horrible button setup (pressing the volume knob in causes you to go into setup, not a good idea when trying to adjust the volume!), does not display RT (Radio Text) info from RDS stations, you have to manually select the display so it shows the Title/Artist info being sent from the station (should do this without interaction from the driver.) Buttons get stuck when selecting presets, manual not the easiest to read.

great stereo just a little hard getting thru all menus to make adjustment and fine tune this unit. great sounding with new speakers and this unit in my 2001 f150 extended cab truck makes this truck rock and loud. I compared to higher end decks but did not need all the little trick features of those. This deck does all i want and some change. Love that I could set color, matches the gauges an intrumentation of the truck so looks like factory fit. With Crutchfield's intructions and past sterwo replacement this was a 15 minute job to install, a breeze. Took little longer for I like to solder the wires togetherTthis unit has alot of adjustment for color, sound quality and function! half volume is pretty lound and in the forties (out of a 62 volume) its concert crisp love tha you can sdjust not only bass and treble but midrange also! great unit from pioneer and i have had alpines, kenwood, sony and pioneer before but love the power of the tuner and amp built in this one! picking up 102.9 out of nashville,tn that could only get on and off before with factory radio! still playing and still learning but so far love this unit!

Pros: adjustable color great soun great power smooth and quiet cd player great tuner great adjustable audio features looks good in the dash easy install hd radio

Thrilled for what it's advertised as. For what I'd consider to be an "entry level" deck, the quality of construction was surprisingly good. There was a considerable increase in sound quality over the factory stereo, and all the features work as they should. HD radio I found especially good. I feel you would be hard pressed to beat the value of this deck. If you're looking for everything a $500 stereo has to offer, I would suggest buying a $500 stereo, but for my money this did everything I wanted. Crutchfield's instructions were bang-on, and installation was a breeze.

Pros: Love the display colours Sound quality much better than stock Easy installation Quality feel of everything

Cons: Radio preset buttons are kinda small, hard to discern in the dark. Menus or digital folder lists are a bit of a pain to navigate through

Generally a good buy with good sound for the price. However, the display is too dim and can't be seen during the day. Some annoying features include a volume knob that is too short that when depressed activates the menu--so, when you turn it, its easy to change settings or press surrounding buttons.

    Pros: Sound quality

Cons: Invisible display, buttons too small and poor volume control knob design.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The thing you should know before you consider buying any of the low-priced Pioneer, Kenwood, or other units in this vein are that the display is INVISIBLE in the daytime, unless your car somehow happens to be very dark inside. At night, regardless of color, the text is somewhat more visible, but is washed into the same color background. Pioneer and Kenwood both seem to have switched over to the same lousy subcontractor to build their display screens on the low end units, because they both suffer from this awful monochromatic blur syndrome. You really do have to see it in person to appreciate how BAD it is. The multifunction control knob has the same issues that all the others from other manufacturers have. Moving through the menus is like delicate surgery. One slight twitch of the finger and you may get "ENTER" or you may get "SCROLL". Good luck! Now, the remote control can help you avoid having to use the control knob to adjust your sound settings and change tracks, etc, but guess what? THE REMOTE DOESN'T FUNCTION WHEN THE USB SLOT IS IN USE! Nope, I'm not kidding. The detachable face release mechanism is awful. The older Pioneers were much easier to get to pop off when you removed them. This one you have to play with it to get it to come off just the right way without breaking it. On the plus side, the music sounds GREAT. The MP3 decoder for the USB input is amazing. I could go on and on about how good my music sounds in my crappy little Civic.

Pros: GREAT sound. Great bass if you turn Loudness on, even with tiny Civic factory speakers. (My trunk is partially lined with B-Quiet Ultimate though, so that helps too.) CDs sound crystal clear with great separation of sounds/frequencies. USB and headphone jack inputs on the front of the unit.

Cons: Display is horrible. Monochromatic garbage. Detachable face release mechanism is poorly engineered. Multifunction control knob sucks, but is no different than Kenwood or any other manufacturer. Instruction manual does not explain how to access HD Radio stations. Remote control does not work when USB is in use. Installation kit from Crutchfield was adequate but did not include any mounting provision for the pocket, so the dash kit does have some slop.

Installed rather easily from the instructions, soldered wires and heat shrunk, all took about an hour, but then I'm an auto mechanic, but still easy IMO. The set sounds GREAT, was easy to program. HD radio is fantastic, CD player and IPOD also works great!! Dont really like the EQ setting its too many steps to keep doing every time you switch music style or genre. Dont like the name of the song/artist displaying just once, if you miss it you have to seitch display and then it scrolls once again, too much time with eyes off the road, but thats just me. I am going to need to upgrade my speakers, this set is way too good for the factory speakers.

Once installed, I am very pleased with the sound. I have Polk speakers in my truck. The recieveer picks up more stations than my factory reciever. This is what I was hoping for as I listem to a lot of AM. Grreat sound on the CDs and through USB in put. Cruthcfield harness and install guide are concise and clear. The owners manual has small print, and instructions are not intuitive. Once I got rid of the demo, the clock set, and was able to turn it off, I was a happy camper. It has many features that I am not using - - maybe in the future. One reason I chose this recieer is for the dedicated presets, and strongest station selection. I would like a brighter daytime display. I am very happy with my purchase. The Crutchfield representatives were very courteous and helpful

Pros: great reception and sound, especially for a good price. a very good value

Cons: volume control knob controls many other functions, and is dificult to change volume while traveling with out activating the menu. It turns out the remote (which I did not think I would need) is very useful to control voume when driving. The owners manual needs bigger print and wiring diagram and simpler instructions

    2005 Chevrolet Malibu
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great features at a low price-point: -- HD radio: You need to be in a rather large city to receive more than than just 1 or 2 (usually NPR) stations, it is a nice upgrade to "regular" FM, and having the songs tagged specifically with artist/title/etc. is a nice update to RDS where it was up to the station to try to piece together a meaningful text message relating all this. -- CD player. I'm apparently kinda old-fashioned in not having given up CDs yet. It's nice to be able to buy a CD at a travel stop or electronics store and be able to hear it right away rather than waiting until it can be ripped. -- Aux input. Great if you have a non-iPod MP3 player! -- USB playback from memory sticks/hard drives: A nice way to playback small amounts of music. (It does claims to support up to 32 devices -- presumably connected via a USB hub? -- but I didn't try.) You only get basic navigation controls (folders and tracks) rather than the unit trying to build a database of artists, songs, etc. like some units do, but in practice that doesn't seem to always work so well anyway. -- iPod support: Works well, letting you select artists, songs, genres, playlists, etc. Even displays a little "Pioneer" logo on your iPod during playback! The buttons and display color can be fixed to almost anything you want, or you can scan through "all" colors or a subset of them ("warm," "calm," etc.)

Pros: -- Dedicated "clock" button that toggles between "don't show me the clock" and "show me the clock as except when the track changes, you change the volume, etc... and revert back to the clock some 5-10 seconds after those occur." It's well-implemented, IMO, and much better than radios that just make the clock one of, e.g., a half-dozen different "display" settigs to scroll through. -- Built-in amp for passive subwooder if you have one (I don't) -- Steering wheel control input (untested)

Cons: -- Scrolling of the display (e.g., artist/title) is slow, although I find almost every radio slow in this regard. -- Only capital letters in display (rather than mixed case), and it's a "blocky" font that looks kinda antiquated -- No "dimmer" input on wire harness... although you can change betweeen low/high from the front panel with a couple of keypresses. (I just leave mine on low -- there's not a lot of difference anyway.)

    HD Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer DEH-4400HD's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts.

Note: HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.

Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    Disc Playback

Compatible Discs: The Pioneer DEH-4400HD supports playback of CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play MP3 and WMA files recorded on, CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name. Up to 8 directories, 99 folders and 999 files per disc are recognized by this unit.

WAV File Playback: The DEH-4400HD offers playback of audio WAV files recorded onto CD-R and CD-RW discs. The head unit supports 8-bit and 16-bit LPCM (Linear PCM) WAV files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz.

File/Track Name List: The Name List feature displays a list of MP3/WMA folders and tracks on a loaded CD or connected USB device, so you can easily access your music. The Name List will also display the list of track titles on a CD Text disc.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connection

Front-Panel USB Input: The unit's front-panel USB (type-A) port allows you to connect a USB portable audio player or USB flash memory that is USB Mass Storage Class compliant.  Your USB memory device must be formatted in FAT 12/16/32. Up to 8 directories, 500 folders, and 15000 files per USB device are recognized by this unit. The unit is compatible with ID3 Tags and will display artist, folder, file, and album name, plus comments.

    • MP3/WMA Files: MP3 files with a bit rate from 8-320 kbps, WMA files with a constant bit rate from 48-320 kbps, and WMA files with a variable bit rate from 48-384 kbps are supported.
    • WAV Files: 8-bit and 16-bit WAV (LPCM) files with a sampling frequency between 16 to 48 kHz are supported.

Note: USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (1A) and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On. This unit cannot recognize USB devices via a USB hub.

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer DEH-4400UB's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your iPod/iPhone to the head unit, via Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU50 / 130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable which comes with your iPod/iPhone. The DEH-4400HD supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible iPod/iPhone.

Note: If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit.

iPod DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps stored on your iPod or iPhone.

iPod Control: You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit, you can browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, Composer, Podcast, or Audiobook (your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked). Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically. In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder.
    • iPod: In iPod mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen.
    • App Mode: App mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps, such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Auxiliary Input: The DEH-4400HD is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player. AUX must be turned on in the setup menu in order to be selected as a source.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-4400HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-4400HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-4400HD are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

3-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-4400HD features a 3-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 3-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

EEQ (Easy EQ): The DEH-4400HD is equipped with a 3-band EQ with 6 preset EQ settings: Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom, and EQ Flat. The Custom band can be adjusted as follows:

    • Bass: +/- 6dB at 100 Hz
    • Mid: +/- 6dB at 1 kHz
    • Treble: +/- 6dB at 10 kHz

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

2.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-4400HD features two pairs of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp output can be configured as a fading rear-channel output or a non-fading subwoofer output with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control. When configured as the subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the 18dB/octave low pass filter (50, 63, 80, 100, or 125 Hz), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer DEH-4400HD in-dash CD receiver features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-4400HD comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. The mute button allows you to quickly lower the volume by about 90% (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
