Overview

Our take on the Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX

Ideal for iPhone® users

Your iPhone's your lifeline to the connected world, so it's important that you be able to use it safely while in the car. The Apple CarPlay™ technology found in Pioneer's AVIC-5100NEX DVD/navigation receiver lets you use most basic iPhone functions through the receiver's screen with your voice or fingertip. And that's not all — you also get door-to-door GPS directions, playback of a wide variety of media, and ear-friendly sound.

Apple CarPlay

Apple CarPlay compatibility allows a Lightning™-to-USB connection to provide access to select apps on newer iPhones. Once connected, the receiver shows large, finger-friendly icons for functions such as Maps, Phone, Messages, Music, Now Playing, and Podcasts. Some streaming apps — including Pandora® — work within the Apple CarPlay interface as well. Drivers can access these functions with a finger touch or through Siri® voice control. A beautiful 6.2" display gives you control

The view from your driver's seat will invariably be brightened when your eyes come across the AVIC-5100NEX's anti-glare 6.2" touchscreen. Pioneer's NEX interface gives you plenty of info at a glance and lets you choose musical sources with ease. Your smartphone's travel-friendly apps can also find a good home on the display when you're properly connected. You can communicate through this Pioneer without taking your eyes off the road. iPhone users also get Pioneer's AppRadio mode for in-dash command of several important apps, while Android owners can employ MirrorLink™ technology to navigate a car-friendly version of their phone's display right on the receiver's screen (optional interface cables required for smartphone connections).

AppRadioLIVE for convenient app use

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface that allows you to spend more time looking at the road and less at your receiver. You customize your display to show several sources of information simultaneously, so you can shift from one to another with a touch of your finger.

You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest.

Note: A small number of apps within AppRadio Mode and AppRadioLIVE are currently not compatible with iOS 8 due to stability and display issues.

Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX navigation receiver

Worry less about getting lost

Taking a trip or running errands? The AVIC-5100NEX boasts door-to-door guidance across the entire U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. You can take advantage of its nearly 8 million points of interest when looking for a nearby restaurant, fuel station, ATM, hotel, or shopping center. Text-to-speech voice prompts deliver spoken street names at turns, and you'll get great visual cues from the receiver's lane guidance and speed limit warnings.

Stay in touch through Bluetooth®

Wireless Bluetooth connectivity lets you keep in contact with others from the road with hands-free calling. The included external microphone gives your conversations plenty of clarity when you're talking through your compatible phone. And the receiver will work with most phones for wireless streaming audio, thanks to its advanced Hands-Free Profile technology. You'll also get smartphone app control through your devices:

  • iPhone: With a separate cable, you'll get control of your Aha Radio app through the receiver's touchscreen when connected. App Mode also gives you limited control over other select apps on your iPhone. You can control your iPhone's Pandora app wirelessly with a Bluetooth connection, including station creation.

  • Android: You'll get control of your smartphone's Pandora (with station creation) and Aha Radio apps through Bluetooth, so no cable needed.

Audio/video options

Discs, drives, devices, or streaming: you don't have to worry about which way to play your media with the AVIC-5100NEX in your dash. The two rear USB inputs are perfect for your digital tunes, including FLAC lossless files.

You can check out video from DVDs or other sources on the 6.2" display when you're parked. You can also tap into video content on your iPod or smartphone with the help of the correct cable (not included). When you're on the road, you can play movies through a rear-seat monitor for your passengers, so they can stay entertained. Dual-zone capability lets you enjoy the radio or another audio source up front while your passengers watch their favorite movies in the back.

You can also connect up to two cameras, so you can see more of what's near your vehicle when getting in and out of tight spots. If you're looking to add subs and amps, you can take advantage of three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs.

Sounds like a winner

No matter what you're listening to, you can count on exceptional sound from the AVIC-5100NEX, with its 13-band graphic equalizer, plus built-in Auto EQ and Time Alignment for optimized listening. Use the high- and low-pass crossover's adjustable points and slopes to fine-tune the sound to your tastes, and engage the Advanced Sound Retriever to fill in the missing "gaps" in your compressed music files to restore them to CD-like clarity.

Ready for SiriusXM satellite radio

The AVIC-5100NEX features a connection for an optional satellite radio tuner, so you can enjoy SiriusXM's extensive programming with your subscription. You can listen to your chosen channels no matter where you roam coast to coast, and take advantage of special features such as alerts when your favorite songs or sports teams are on the air.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, or Chrysler Uconnect™, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the AVIC-5100NEX offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

NO Pioneer Support for the bugs

Bill from Durham, NC on 12/20/2016

    2011 Kia Soul

I have numerous problems with TWO of these units. Both exhibit similar problems and I've gotten no support from Pioneer. Both units exhibit the following problems: 1 - frequent loss of wired connectivity to iPhones, iPods and iPad Mini Typically the unit displays "No Device Connected", the music goes silent but the music progress bar continues to move as if playing. 2 - when an artist has multiple albums in their folder the display lists all albums with the exact same tracks. They all look like the first album of the artis. 3 - in this case playing any album only plays songs from the 1st album in the list. If I look directly at the iDevice the music is listed correctly. 4 - music I know ripped and plays fine will suddenly play back with static and pops. If I turn off the car and start up again then it will play back fine again. I've submitted two pleas for support to Pioneer and get only canned replies. No support, no ideas, nothing in over 3 weeks of waiting. I will NEVER buy another Pioneer again.

Pros: Nice look, fit well in the car.

Cons: BUGS with wired iDevices and no help from Pioneer

    Nice!!

    2013 Chevrolet Camaro
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really nice unit, I have been a Pioneer customer for over 20 years so I have had my share of pioneer head units. Used the Metra 99-3010 Camaro dash kit and worked perfectly (including preserving the external temp sensor) so I can't speak to other dash kits. Got this unit primarily because the windshield of the new Camaros is pretty small and stock radio flaking out causing significant issues with AC and turn signals, not to mention absolutely UGLY!! Use of a separate GPS unit would eat up ALOT of windshield real estate. User interface is intuitive for those used to Pioneer head units, perhaps there is room for improvement in this area, previous unit in old vehicle was a Pioneer AVH-X2800BS so there was not much adjustment period. Works well with android smart phones, and can allow for multiple phones to be saved into bluetooth memory. Bluetooth audio streaming works well and no complaints. Had the Pioneer ND-BC8 backup camera installed with this and works well. USB extension cable installed to the glovebox and placed a thumbdrive for stored music. DVD playback works well, did not have the bypass installed so vehicle must be parked for DVD playback. Adequate power to drive aftermarket door speakers all the way around without seperate amp, paired this with the JL Audio ACP208LG-W3v3 dual 8" powered sub box, Focal Integration ISS 165 6 3/4 front speakers and Kenwood KFC-6965S 6x9 rears... NICE!! Overall quite pleased

Pros: Nice unit, built in GPS reduces clutter in vehicle

Cons: Not free? No remote, have to step up to the 6100 class to get a remote, did not realize this at time of purchase Had to drill into the menus to silence the GPS based "You are Speeding" alarm.

Poor quality user interface - Does not stand up in the age of iPhone

JK from Austin, TX on 5/14/2016

    2006 Volkswagen Touareg
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The user interface on this is just terrible. So many problems I just don't know where to start. The major benefit of this unit is that it interfaces with the iPhone. It does not do so very cleanly. The bigger problem is that the user interface is just so bad compared to an iPhone or any other handheld, why would you use it? Here goes 1) The button location to select audio source changes depending on what window you are on. 2) It's very challenging to find settings (configurations) as each group of functions has its own settings and screen layout is poor. 3) The selection of "apps" in Carplay is limited so commonly used map applications like WAZE and Google cannot display on the screen. 4) Worse, when you have google maps giving you directions, each time a direction is given the audio you are listening to via Carplay will shut off. The stereo things that the google direction is a change in the source audio. Then you have to manually select the audio again. Then the next turn direction it shuts off again. 5) Sound quality issues. Constant white noise in background when audio is off (but stereo is on). 6) Volume issues with Siri and other voice directions in the iPhone. Volume is off the charts, can blow a hole in your earplugs, and is very difficult to modify. Some on stereo, some on iPhone, others appear unable to modify volume so you just have to deal with it. Overall it's great of the money but I would go another route if you have the extra money to spend

Pros: Has Carplay. Has bluetooth audio.

Cons: Everything else about the radio. The user interface is poor. Functional software problems like the audio turning off every time google maps gives you a direction, then having to manually change source and turn audio on again

Great Navigation system, for the price

Pros: fast easy to use, multitude of connectivity options, Apple Car Play works great as well as the Bluetooth. This unit has a set of backup lines, that work great, don't remember reading about this throughout any review.

Cons: Wish it had a dial rather than a clicker to increase or decrease the volume. Pioneer NEX app - not user friendly.

Dtgill from Somewhere in Oregon on 4/10/2016

    2015 Kia Sedona
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well it sounded better than the stock radio; however that's not saying much. I couldn't get the free gps map updates, and neither crutchfield Pioneer or Navimaps could help me, with a licensing error. Crutchfield support has been awesome, I am sending this unit back and have decided to by a Garmin instead at least you can get free lifetime maps updates and it's a relatively painless process. Pioneers attitude was it's not our problem, Navimaps attitude was it's Pioneers problem, like I said Crutchfield support was awesome, they sent me a Pioneer AVH-X5800BHS as a replacement, and there is a notable difference in sound quality. I probably received a lemon as it was a scratch and dent unit, but Pioneer should have at least tried to help me out with the map problems considering there was no telephone support number for Navimaps. Touchscreen isn't very sensitive, touch a number and the next number pops up, same thing with letters. sometimes I had to press more than once. I tried to enter a five digit address and the gps would only allow me to enter four of the five digits, an exercise in frustration.

Pros: Sound quality was better than stock radio Grid lines for the back up camera

Cons: Couldn't get the free map update due to licensing error Sound quality wasn't all that great Pioneer chose not to stand behind its product Navimaps chose not to stand behind its product Touch screen isn't sensitive GPS wouldn't allow for a five digit address

    Outstanding System for the Price

Dylan from Fort Lewis, WA on 4/8/2016

    2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got the system in the mail really fast. Thanks for 3-day free shipping. I'm a little dummie when it comes to something more advanced than simple plug in, so I gave it to a local big box store to help me out. Paid another couple hundred dollars for installation, but no big deal. The system works great! Even though it is cut mostly for iPhones, it works great with my Microsoft Lumia 640XL (I'm a huge fan of Windows Phones). Paired Bluetooth easily, listening to music on Spotify, Cortana (Siri's analog for Windows Phone) works outstanding to make calls and respond to text messages. Never loses connection. I love the unit. I would recommend for anybody who is looking for a great, responsive touch screen and easy, user-friendly interface.

Pros: GPS Navigation is fast with lots of different settings to find route that even my phone doesn't have.

Cons: If the music volume is low and the car is not running, I can hear the processor working. No big deal, but the factory one was silent. Also, not too many options to select the voice for navigation. The one that actually announces streets does not sound natural at all, but those that do sound natural - do not announce street names. Lastly, there is no way to set 'Home' destination so it would look for the route to your home from anywhere. You have to type your home address every time.

Providing a multitude of options for the consumer, this product offers apps of its own as well as Apple CarPlay to access your favorite iPhone apps. Defective

    2006 Mercury Mountaineer
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a recommended options as a Blaupunkt San Antonio 640 I purchased from Crutchfield would not interface with the steering wheel controls using a crux i/f. This pioneer would have been a better recommended replacement for the Blaupunkt if the camera input connection was not defective and if I had an iPhone as opposed to an android phone. After about two weeks and a multitude of responses from support I ended up returning both head units and everything that came with them. The support personnel and hours are excellent. This is not about poor service, it's about faulty mid quality equipment nit working out if the box, including the dash kit! Would I use Crutchfield again? Maybe, but it would require a big fat price break for what turned out to be an incredible waste of many hours of my time trying to get lemons to become apples!

Pros: Great support group! I can't say enough here. Everyone I spoke to was professional and tried to make things work.

Cons: Poor quality control. Dash kit sub par. Used my old one. Pioneer Avic 5100 NEX bad camera in out if the box. (yes, I used the b/c input and setup the software. Even upgraded firmware still did not work. Blaupunkt 640 not ready for US market and Ford steering wheel controls. Although I didn't try it, I bet the PAC would have worked, but the Cruz did not. Crux recommended setting as Sony, that didn't work either. So two defective or improperly paired components.

The product is solid. I like the way it looks in my vehicle. The biggest installation problem that I had was with the recommended wiring harness I bought here. The harness didn't allow for the best connection of the stereo system.

Grizz from Bozeman, MT on 3/28/2016

    2005 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit produces some really fine sound, better than the JVC I had in the truck previously. Installation was relatively simple but took longer than I thought. Biggest problem was running wires and cables and securing them out of the way. I didn't need most of the wiring harness that came with it but that may be because I had a previous after market stereo already in there. So how does it work. Setup was easy. It sounds great even with old speakers. Everything works pretty much as advertised and I like Apple CarPlay but I wish they offered more apps. Mostly just radio stations now. The only thing I don't like much is the navigation system. Maybe I'm just used to Garmin but the menus on this seem overly fussy and not very intuitive. Trying to input an address can be an exercise in frustration. Part of this is because my touch screen is not very accurate. Almost every time I touch "1", the number "2" appears and there are a couple of letters that the same thing happens. I've also had problems with the GPS not allowing me to enter an address that it didn't recognize (a family member in Colorado) and when I tried to put in an address that should have been next door, the map pointed me to a location several miles away from the actual address and in a field somewhere.

Pros: Great sound, everything related to music works. I like Apple CarPlay but looking forward to more apps. Hands free calling is crystal clear.

Cons: Navigation menus not very intuitive. Errors in navigation (see above). Hard to input data on the touchscreen. It only comes with one USB extension cable but needs two. Operating manual only comes on CD and it's over 200 pages long.

    Good featured head unit

TexasBahr from san marcos, TX on 3/28/2016

    2010 Toyota RAV4

I wanted a Nav head unit that had its own Nav but ALSO could use the power and flexibility of the features of my I-Phone. This unit came closest to my wish list. My son installed it. He read up on how to tap into my cars rear view camera (the display was built into the rear view mirror) and use that camera to source fueling that signal to the head unit so I had a nice, large rear view display when backing up.

Pros: Can select internal NAV capability or use the NAV built into my IPhone. The head unit reads my incoming text messages and plays them out through the car speakers and asks me if I want to reply and allows me to dictate the reply and sends the reply. Really cool! Very flexible. All sorts of custom adjustments for the sound and other features. Generally, I am pleased with the purchase and would recommend the unit to anyone wanting a head unit that reasonably interacts with their I-Phone.

Cons: Still getting used to the features. Have to hunt for the feature that allows me to stop internal NAV in the midst of the trip. Internal Nav lost satellite link for about 20 minutes and would not allow me to reset the connection. When I arrived home it miraculously reset by itself. Internal NAV did not come with the latest map ApplePlay will not let me see the WAYZ NAV app on the head unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Yes! Thank you Pioneer. My suffering with 2 and a half years of Kenwood Navigation system is gone. Finally threw it out after it broke twice, and purchased this Pioneer model for half the price and I couldn't be more ecstatic. It was a straight 1:1 swap out. My Focal Component Speakers are far crisper with the Pioneer Head Unit even though I am still using the same amp. (They finally sound the way they should.) Touch screen is properly responsive rather than unreliable as on the Kenwood.. Menu system is better designed. Unit is about 20% lighter. Navigation system is easier to use. Sirius XM menus are far more intuitively laid out. Cell phone integration is correct. On the old Kenwood DNX system, head unit would only automatically pair with one device....so when my wife drove the car, her phone would never automatically pair, even if my phone was not in the car. Not having the accuracy of the Garmin navigation is a bit of a bummer, but the Pioneer Nav system is easier to use......so if I am not clear yet.....this Pioneer is an outstanding unit, and is better than its competition, even though the competition can cost twice as much for similar features. (This one is cheaper than the competitors refurbished units too.) For reference, this Pioneer is installed in an 2009 Saturn Outlook...which has a similar body to the GMC Acadia, Chevy Traverse, and Buick Enclave. Running 4 channels. Front speakers are component. Rears are not.

Pros: Sound Clarity, Equalizer, TouchScreen Reponsiveness, Intuitive Menus, Intuitive Navigation, Price, Cell Phone Integration, Sirius XM menus, Apple Car Play.

Cons: Doesn't have a Garmin Nav system, which are more accurate with locations, though the Pioneer is easier to use. Touch Screen is glossy, which interferes with the quality of the picture when using the back-up camera. (Great of other times)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased 5100NEX as an easy to use, minimal learning back-up display for my mother. It was exactly that, very easy to operate. Installation was normal as for any vehicle. All of the hardware was part of the kit, plus I added a backup camera. Camera display shows up very clearly on the large screen. With fewer menu options, this was ideal with minimal distractions while on the road. GPS system has some really cool features I had not expected like speed warnings. Phone bluetooth was a breeze to connect and automatically downloaded phonebook. Accessory trim hardware needed trimming before it would all fit.

Pros: Display is nice size; touch screen is easy to select options. Overall very pleased; this was a good choice. If want a system at least as good as any multi-function OEM GPS system - this is exactly that. Sound is crisp and clear through OEM speakers; can't wait to hear what the new speakers will sound like.

Cons: None so far; it does exactly what it was advertised to do. If you want a system with Sirris or a remote control because the dash is too far away from the front seat, then move up the product line.

The Pioneer AVIC-5100 Nex receiver is a great product with great sound. Installed on my 12' Dodge Ram 1500, the receiver looks great and sounds even better. Easy Install and seamless integration with my iPhone6. Both the Bluetooth calling feature and navigation aspect of the receiver work great. My only complaint is the occasional glitch when transitioning from Bluetooth to Apple CarPlay. It may simply be an issue with the newest iOS update. The receiver will occasionally freeze when connecting my phone but will quickly correct the issue after unplugging the phone. Overall the product is a great bargain for the price and integrates seamlessly when combined with the Maestro idatalink.

Pros: Great look, sound, and navigation.

Cons: Occasional glitch when transitioning from Bluetooth audio to Apple CarPlay.

Looks and sounds good. Love the bluetooth speaker phone feature. Only complaint is radio reception. Not sure if it's a VW or Tiguan thing with two factory antenna inputs down to the one Pioneer input, but I lost significant reception. If you regularly use phone music apps, you won't miss the reception.

Pros: Clean install, good size screen.

Cons: Radio reception. (not sure if it's a VW thing or the Pioneer)

I'm satisfied with its performance and happy to have Navigation for my long haul towing expeditions that take me many places across the country.

Pros: Competitively Priced Solid Navigation System Excellent Sound Quality Lots of connectivity options Responsive Touch Panel

Cons: Small-ish Screen Plastic Design Only Partially Removable Buttons ( Not Faceplate) A whole bunch of "connected" apps- useless for people like me who don't own a "smart" cell phone.

The product works great, looks great, and sounds amazing. After I completed the installation I powered up the unit and it took less than 3 minutes to have my phone synced up to it (Galaxy Note 5, and it works perfectly), the time set, radio stations going ,etc. The interface is so easy to use that I haven't even opened up the manual yet to figure anything out. The touchscreen looks very sharp and the response to touch is very good. It is very easy to get from an application over to settings, and then quickly back again. When using the backup camera the picture comes through very clear and it is a nice clean and quick picture. Navigation is spot on too. The only thing I had to do was to disable the audible speeding warnings, I set this to only warn me visually on the display when driving over the speed limit. The traffic POIs all seem up to date as well. As I mentioned I have a Samsung Note 5 and my wife as an iPhone 5S, both work easily and the integration take all of 2 seconds to get it connected. When I use the Bluetooth connection to make phone calls no one can even tell that I am using an external microphone, the one included with this appears so far to be very clean and crisp. The sound quality is amazing as well (I did upgrade my factory speakers) and I love the 13 band EQ. The presets are okay but when I customized the EQ I think it sounds fantastic. Overall this has been a fantastic upgrade for me, and for the price you certa

Pros: Easy integration Easy User Interface 13 Band EQ Solid Navigation System

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So, some of the reviews (here/other sources) read almost talked me out of this radio, but I am glad they did not. This is a great radio if you are looking to update your cockpit with new tech. It has all the newest functions I need and they work great. Some of the complaints I read were long boot time, different map database that didn't work well, annoying overspeed warnings, inability to upgrade firmware, etc. What I found that in matter of a day or two was there was enable/disable functions for almost everything. Its a computer, it takes time to boot, but with my back up camera, it provides an instant video feed regardless of boot cycle. I was afraid of the map system seeing how it was not garmin, or another popular brand. After using it, I find it just as useful as any GPS system, but you have to trust and verify the route; basic stuff. The only issue I had was after install. The bluetooth receiver ended up going bad requiring a swap form Crutchfield. It sucked, but they had another one shipped that day and it was an easy 1 for 1 swap. It's a computer and any brand is susceptible. I will also say, as many others, is that the Cruthfield team was there to help. Even after the swap, when I has a few wires crossed.

Pros: Works as advertised. Great customer service. Ability to customize preferences. Bypass function allowing a passenger to have full access to programming all functions in the radio. (not in instructions, but easy youtube search). A must when on long cross-country with your mate.

Cons: I looked at the wiring harness with all the additions for integrating steering wheel controls and rear camera, and was a little overwhelmed. I decided to have it professionally installed because I overestimated my ability to install. Not really a Con, more a Me problem.

    Great for the Money!!

Put this in an older car. I have an 8100NEX in a newer car. The 5100 seems less delicate and has almost all the same features you use everyday except the HD radio - and I really can't tell the difference between HD and regular radio except for the display. The screen is a little smaller and you cannot adjust the angle for glare, but these are not big issues. I think not having a moveable screen makes 1 less thing that can go wrong.

    Pros: Price and features

Cons: None. Missing features presents on higher priced models are bling. Smaller screen size not a big issue.

My AVIC experienced intermittent failure early on, failing to turn on unless you hit the hard reset button, which wipes the settings and presets. Updating the firmware did nothing. unit works great. I am using all of the 6 channel pre amp outs to a 6 channel American bass amp and it sounds awesome. I though the amp i had was garbage until I got this head unit. I was running a line out system which was grbage. I was curious that Crutchfield and Pioneer claim 4v out but the head unit is labeled as 5v out on the circuit board. it has sounds amazing, has excellent quality. with the cables I'm using I have zero noise. the interface takes a while to get used to compared to the older pioneers but i like it. still reading the instruction Manuel. I think the 7100Nex is a better bargain and am planning to get one if I find a better deal on black Friday. should of read more carefully that this unit does not have HD Radio, Built in GPS is not a must! if you use apple maps, you can use apple maps as GPS using the car play features and navigate with apple maps with a easier to use interface than whoever pioneer is using and all your locations are already on your phone. the built in GPS does do a good job taking you where you need to go and the overhead highways signs, speed limits, and selectable gauges posted on the screen is awesome.

Pros: excellent sound quality maps work great touch screen/interface works very well 13 band EQ!

Cons: 1. for this price no HD radio.. stock Head units have HD radio.. its 2015. 2. car play for iPhone is buggy, siri's ears(talk to text) horrible 3. car play audio hangs up, cuts out 4. updating has been a pain-unsuccessful 5. initial GPS voice over is set at %100 which can be deafening and extremely annoying 6. GPS doesn't think you know to follow directions and gives ridiculous step by step directions, like turn 3 left times to make a u turn vs stating make a u turn.

    Jim from Virginia on 10/9/2015

The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEC navigation receiver has more to it than what I will ever use but it meets my needs. I wanted a unit that has great phone connection for sending and receiving calls hands free so whoever sends or receives the call would have a clear quality reception and this unit meets that need very well. The navigation system works and gives good information but I have not taken a long trip yet so I can not say it is great because I have not tested it. The nice thing about the navigation that I like is if you want to know the posted speed limit there is a ladies voice that lets you know the posted speed limit each time you go into a different speed limit location but the down side is she does not allow even one mile over the speed limit without telling you which is good if you are in an area where you don't know the speed limit however if you don't want to listen to her you can turn her off. The radio works well to the local station that I use. I have not used the A/V or USB so I don't know about that part. I purchased a rear camera for seeing behind my truck with the receiver and it works good with this receiver shows a good picture. The best part of the purchase of the receiver and other items I purchased is that the sales person at the Crutchfield store took the time to listen to what I wanted in a receiver and told me what this unit did compared to other units and that IS WORTH THE 4 HOUR ROUND TRIP to the Charlottesville Store.

Pros: Meets my needs. Great for hands free phone calling and receiving. Easy to install and program.

Cons: More unit than I need

After going through two Alpine head units followed by this one, finally I am satisfied! Really like the camera view features and front/rear camera options. Auto EQ/time alignment did a great job and it's the first one I've seen on a car head unit. Haven't used the GPS yet but I hope I am not disappointed after reading Stubbie's review. I found only 3 minor gripes although I haven't used it much past installation testing yet : 1, don't prompt me with your liability message every time I start the vehicle. OK, fine, prompt me when I start navigation, but the audio system?!? Come on. 2, let me turn off the "caution: image may be reversed" that always overlays the cameras. I know left from right. 3, did you really have to use a 2.5 mm jack for the microphone when my last 4 head units all had a 3.5 mm jack?

Pros: Front/rear camera inputs with option to automatically display. Auto EQ and time alignment. And for dark driving, when you select "screen off", it *stays* off! (Unlike the Alpines.)

Cons: Liability messages galore (but I should be used to that in 2015...), 2.5 mm microphone jack, so buy an adapter or be surprised by having to re-run your microphone when you already have one installed (ask me how I know...)

So far, it's a great addition to my '13 Sprinter van. Hooked up to my iPhone 6s with just a Lightning to USB cord. There is no HDMI hook-up on the deck, so everything has to be USB. The phone works, messaging works, maps, but so far, not Pandora. I'm sure it's something that I am doing wrong, but I'll get it. Lots of wires to play with, with two antennas, (antennae?) one for Nav and one for Sirius. Plus the microphone for the phone, which also works well.

Pros: Iphone 6 with ApplePlay. Easy navigation system. Good sound, even with factory speakers that will be upgraded soon.

    Mixed bag

    Stubbie from Maryland on 4/6/2015

I wanted to clean up my dash and I need a backup camera. So, had a AVIC5100 installed. On paper, it had all the features I wanted. It sure looks better than the GPS on the AC duct! Please note I am rather picky about ergonomics. Things should just plain work, intuitively, easily and reliably. I am to old to put up with bad design. Some of the nav features like way-points, avoid tools etc are very good. Others are frustrating. I am used to a Garmin. I am listing only my criticisms, most could be fixed with firmware. GPS gets behind you, not as easy to cancel a route or find things. Small buttons hard to press. Next turn banner font too small for old eyes. Tuner not as "hot" as my OEM VW. Takes a long time to boot. I want to get in, put it into reverse and see the rear camera WITH assist lines. It takes too long. Much longer to acquire GPS than my Garmin. Mine has a "hot" pixel. No easy way to just turn the radio off if driving down the road. It fights my VW bluetooth. I have nothing to compare it to other than an OEM radio, rental car with a camera, and an external Garmin. All were far less frustrating. This may be the class of the field, but it may not. Modern cars are "difficult" to deal with. I am not of the iPhone generation, so all the fancy multimedia linking I neither know, nor care, anything about. A 245 page owners manual should be a hint.

Pros: Some nav features, good CD/aux/USB sound. Very good camera view with adjustable guidelines.

Cons: Usability, Pioneer choices on NAV functionality. GPS "behind" you to far. "Exit highway" about the only nav warning for a turn.

6.2" LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX features a 6.2" TFT Active Matrix, 16:9 widescreen touchscreen display. The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a connected component such as an iPod/iPhone or Android smartphone. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AVIC-5100NEX's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Top Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).

Note: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

Start-Up Time: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX will turn on to the last source selected or the navigation screen. The unit has a start-up time of approximately 17.3 seconds from OFF to the last Source selected, or a start-up of approximately 43.1 seconds from OFF to the Navigation screen.

Variable Illumination: The AVIC-5100NEX offers custom illumination for the front-panel controls so you can match your vehicle's interior, plus MIXTRAX Illumination for DJ-style illumination in your vehicle.

    • Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the left edge of the screen. HERE Navigation: The AVIC-5100NEX offers a comprehensive map database from HERE covering the entire United States (including Alaska & Hawaii), Canada, and Puerto Rico enabling users to route to millions of destinations; including 7.9 Million points of interest (POIs). The map database is stored on the head unit's built in 8GB flash memory.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While this database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: Customers are eligible to update to the latest available map database free of charge during the first 45 days of operation (from the unit's first receipt of an active GPS signal). To update the map database, visit the Naviextras website to download the Naviextras Toolbox on your computer (requires Windows PC or newer; not compatible with Mac) and USB thumbdrive.

GPS Technology: The AVIC-5100NEX accurately measures your current location by the Global Positioning System, a network of satellites orbiting the earth to give you time and position information. The accuracy of the GPS information depends upon how good the reception is. The unit has a built-in GPS receiver with a magnetic antenna included. The AVIC-5100NEX also features a speed sensing cable for better accuracy of your vehicle's movement; this wire should always be connected to your vehicle's speed detection circuit.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 10.1 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 7.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

It also includes highly accurate and the fast live traffic updates (every two minutes) from its High Density (HD) Traffic feature.

On-Screen Map: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX displays a real-time moving map illustrating your current position and intended route. It will show map scale and geographic details such as lakes, rivers, highways, buildings, and towns. Your route is marked with a green line, while your vehicle is indicated by a red arrow on the screen, and checkered flag marks your destination. As you travel the AVIC-5100NEX guides to your destination with arrows on the map and directions at the top of the screen. The map screen will also indicate the distance to your next maneuver. During your calculated route, distance to your final destination, timed need to reach the final destination, and estimated arrival time are all displayed on-screen. You can adjust the following map settings.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. 2D View displays a normal two-dimensional map with North or your direction at the top of map screen. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, your direction is at the top of the map screen and you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads.
    • Color Mode: You can switch between daytime and nighttime color modes or let the head unit's software switch between the two mode automatically a few minutes before sunrise and a few minutes after sunset.
Note: The on-screen map offers Smart Zoom. When you approach a turn, the map will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you.

High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.
    • Exit Services: While navigation a route, you can find gas, food, lodging, and restrooms near upcoming exits along major highways and freeways.

    • Voice Guidance (Text-to-Speech): In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the AVIC-5100NEX provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can adjust the the voice guidance volume independently from the head unit's main volume.

      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Economical: combines the benefits of Fast and Short; calculates as if it were calculating the Fast route, but it takes other roads as well to save fuel
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Detours/Alternatives/Auto Reroute: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of four routes (Fastest/Shortest/Economical/Easy) with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take. You can also choose to Detour around the road ahead, avoid a specific road, or around a section of the route.  If you depart from the original route, the navigation system recalculates the route and provides new directions.

Route Planner + Itinerary w/ Route Simulation: The Route Planner feature lets you built your route using the list of destinations you have chosen. You can modify the list as you like (adding or removing a destination (waypoint), changing a final destination, or setting a new starting position. AM/FM+Internet+SiriusXM Radio

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID AM/FM tuner features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): BSM lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

    • Pandora App: The free Pandora App (either from iTunes Apps or Google Play) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX using your USB-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 7.0+) or Bluetooth paired Android smartphone (2.2+). The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your Station or Genre List and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. An active Pandora account is required.

    Audio Section

24-Bit/192kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX is equipped with a 24-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AVIC-5100NEX are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AVIC-5100NEX employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's variable 6/12/18db per octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features a 6, 12, or 18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125, 160, or 200Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in AppRadio Control mode, with the Pandora App, for CarPlay, using MirrorLink, or via Android Auto.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation; this can be turned On or Off.

    AV + OEM Connectivity

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVIC-5100NEX has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console.

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, Disc, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal (not including RGB) which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

Rear-View Camera Input: The AVIC-5100NEX is equipped with a composite video rear-view camera input for the addition of an optional backup camera (130NDBC6, sold separately). When the vehicle's transmission is put in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (violet/white wire of the harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.75 seconds. Additional rear-view camera features include:

    • Parking Assist Guidelines: The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up and parking your vehicle.
    • Trailer Towing: You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing.
    • Second Camera: In addition, you can turn the unit's AV input into a second camera input for adding a front camera (sold separately).
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

OEM Integration (via Firmware Update): The Pioneer in-dash receiver is now compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module. When the Pioneer receiver is installed into a compatible GM, Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep, or VW vehicle using the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately) you'll get to keep select factory features that are normally lost when replacing the factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit. Retained factory features include the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Sync system, GM's OnStar system, as well as Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep's U-Connect system. Other factory retained features include steering wheel controls, Aux inputs/USB ports, Bluetooth, voice command, satellite radio, and secondary display support. Plus, you get touchscreen control over many of these key factory audio features through the Pioneer navigation receiver. Check here for your vehicle's specific compatibility.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware fromiDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Pioneer head unit's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.[ Krissy  Apr 18, 2016 ]  Staff

Not from my experience no.[ Zackery Oman  Mar 21, 2016 ]
Possibly. The pioneer can play music files via USB so if you mount as a USB drive it should work. The pioneer does have aux port. I suspect that the phone features via Bluetooth are not supported for Windows devices.[ chris  Mar 21, 2016 ]
There is USB ports on the back of the radio giving you the ability to hook up any phone to it.[ patrick  Mar 21, 2016 ]
That has to do with the format in which the CD is burned. It's been awhile since I've burned a CD but I think the two different formats are UDF and ISO. One of them will allow the info to be displayed while the song is playing. Most CDs purchased at the store, from major artists, don't seem to have the info for their songs as it requires a little more work while creating the CD and they are trying to make as much money off the CD as possible.[ Samuel  Mar 16, 2016 ]

Yes, you need a separate Sirius XM tuner and transfer your Sirius subscription to that separate tuner. Or, alternatively, transfer the Sirius tuner to the Pioneer unit that you intend to install in your vehicle...[ Eliseo  Feb 28, 2016 ]

Yes. No Problem.[ JEFFREY  Jan 24, 2016 ]
No it will stop the BT connection. If you want this for CarPlay then hardwire it is. I hope next FW does CarPaly over BT.[ Michael  Jan 24, 2016 ]
Unfortunately you can not. When the head unit detects anything plugged into the USB ports in the back it deactivates the Bluetooth radios and will not let your phone hook up with Bluetooth until you unplug your other device.[ Brandon  Jan 24, 2016 ]
Yes cause I did it to mine.[ JAMES E  Jan 13, 2016 ]
    Yes.[ Chris  Jan 13, 2016 ]

pioneer does offer a current map update for the selected NEX series including the 5100nex, however, i have not been successful in updating the maps or the available firmware update or map so far. also i believe the reason that this update is being offered for free is that initially a couple of the states in the north east were incorrectly loaded on the base map for the NEX line. I followed the instructions as on the pioneer website but cannot get the deck to recognize my USB drive for updating and i am now contemplating switching to the 7100NEX instead.[ justin  Nov 23, 2015 ]
You should be fine, I have over a weeks worth of music on my usb drive and it handles it just fine.[ EVANDA  Nov 13, 2015 ]
I wish i could help but haven't made it that far into the unit yet. If i send you a usb drive can yoou copy those 10000 songs for me? lol thats a hell of a library.[ Jim  Nov 05, 2015 ]
Yes , Ive only listened to my iTunes or Pandora a handful of times but the song ends and it goes right into the next song on the track[ MATT  Nov 10, 2015 ]
Explain to what that is and I can give u an accurate answer[ MATT  Nov 10, 2015 ]
FLAC is a file format for music. Gapless means there is no break between tracks. If a song blends into another there is no break, it just continues.[ Jodie  Nov 03, 2015 ]
What do you mean gapless[ Froylan  Oct 31, 2015 ]
I have no idea what that is[ Kenneth  Oct 30, 2015 ]
not really. I have an android samsung note 4 and it is ok for the basic functions such as phone calls and playing music via bluetooth connection but it will not work if you use the usb cable. the usb cable will work with an apple phone.[ David  Sep 30, 2015 ]
