Pioneer A4 Wi-Fi speaker with Airplay

The Pioneer A4 delivers powerful sound from a variety of streaming devices.

Plenty of ways to stream music

The A4 offers several different ways to stream audio from various devices. If you have an iPhone®, iPod touch® or iPad®, you can use AirPlay to stream your favorite tunes directly from these devices to the A4. Or if you're a PC loyalist with a networked hard drive, your entire collection is just a swipe away thanks to the A4's DLNA compatibility. Android™ users can even stream music from HTC One smartphones. The A4 also supports Pandora® and vTuner® Internet radio, so you can discover even more artists and genres beyond your personal music library.

No Wi-Fi? No problem, with Wireless Direct

So what about that room with little or no Wi-Fi reception? Thanks to Pioneer's exclusive Wireless Direct, the A4 can interact wirelessly with your Apple device for music streaming independent of your home network. This allows for even more set-up flexibility in your home, so you can enjoy the A4's big sound beyond the reaches of your Wi-Fi signal.

Improve your home's décor

The A4 will improve any room not just with its solid sound, but also its sharp looks. The gloss black enclosure and black metal grill give it a clean, streamlined profile. The control panel features touch sensors rather than buttons, for a sleek appearance that's super-responsive. The rear panel has USB and minijack inputs, as well as an Ethernet jack, for wired connections to music sources and a network router.

Use your smartphone as a remote

The A4 comes with a remote. But if you're playing music from a smartphone, you'll probably want to control the A4 with that same device. Just download Pioneer's free ControlApp for Apple and Android, and your smartphone will handle all the A4's functions just as easily as it streams your music.

Pioneer A4 - Great Value

DMP from Louisiana on 1/19/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding speaker. Bought it for my teenage daughter's room so she could stream music from her iPhone and she loves it! More than enough to fill up a 12 x 15 room - loud enough for a teenager and too loud for her parents! The sound quality is great as well, clear highs and full atmosphere bass. It's a little tricky to setup but a little internet research and we got it working with little problems. I highly recommend it.

Pros: Attractive cabinet, great sound, plenty loud enough for a teenager. Compared to Sonos pricing, you can beat the value

Cons: A little tricky to setup but nothing overwhelming

Excellent Sound, Good system

Loki from Rochester, NY on 1/9/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this speaker for the Air Play capability so I could use my music collection on my computer without having to get an iPod, or some other MP3 player, to have the music playing in a room across the house from where my desktop was set up. Getting the wi-fi set up was a bit of a hassle, but got it done with only few random curses (usually because I was mis-interpreting the perfectly clear English directions on the set up sheet.). I would have preferred to have the owner's manual shipped or at least on a CD with the set up, but once set up, it was playing nicely with excellent sound fidelity. The two problems I have are, first the remote that came with my unit is not working well. The original battery for the remote couldn't make it work at all, and having replaced the battery, it's only limited utility. Since having a remote was something I could do away with, anyways, I haven't made an issue of it, but if that's something you care about I can't say it provides a useful interface. More of an issue is that when rebooting the speaker can take up to 20 minutes to reconnected to the wi-fi and the computer. Since I wanted this for music for sleeping to, this can make for some frustrating time trying to sleep - however I've only had the signal drop once, requiring a full restart, since I got it set up - and that may be more because of the construction of the house interfering with the wi-fi signal. I'm still getting 95%+ up time from it, and very happy.

Pros: Great sound. Air Play is easy

Cons: Long start up time; remote not very useful

Best speaker for $200, period.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Where are you gonna find a fantastic brand new speaker for this price? I bought five speakers and I returned all of them. If your budget is a little more, go with the B&W Z2 but if money is an issue, get the Pioneer A4, before they are discontinued. After ordering different speakers from several websites, I ended it up with the following items: (yes, my wife thinks I'm crazy) Klipsch MC3, Bose Sound Dock Series III, Marshall Stanmore, JBL Venue on Beat LT, B&W Z2, and the Pioneer A4. I listened to more than 100 songs between these speakers and all I can say is that none of them is bad. All of them are well balanced and you can not go wrong with these options. However, the Pioneer A4 was the only one that at high volume never distorted and created a big deep clean bass. This means that if your are planning to use it as a party speaker, go for it. If you are looking for a rich, clean sound at low and medium volume go with the B&W Z2. The Marshall Stanmore sounds great at the store but at home, does not match the big winner Pioneer A4. Set up requires to take the time to read the instructions carefully. If you like plug and play get the other ones from above. I use my Pioneer A4 in my cave (garage).

Pros: Price, amazing powerful sound, sub-woofer, tweeters.

Cons: Remote, weak in the mid-range department, set-up is more time consuming.

Absolutely phenomenal for the price

Kris from Reno, NV on 11/29/2013

This thing is amazing. For those of you having issues setting it up, the two easiest ways are, if you have an iOS device, turn on the pioneer and wait for the power light to stop flashing. Then, plug your iOS device to the USB port in the back of the Pioneer. Unlock your iOS device. Then, press and hold the input button on the front AND the network button on the back for three or more seconds. Your iOS device will ask if you want to share your network settings with the pioneer. Click accept and...voila! Or, use WPS on your router. For the price, this thing is rock solid. Not exactly balanced sound, but for the price, you cannot beat the sound, form factor, features, or the name. This thing rocks. Buy it. It's almost as good as the Sonos Play:5 at half the price.

Pros: Everything. Sound, features, setup, price...

Cons: It could have a more balanced sound. It seems to boost both ends of the spectrum which leaves the midrange a bit dull. But I am being very nitpicky here.

Drew from San Antonio TX on 11/19/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Terribly disappointing. Airplay doesn't seem to work on all iphone apps. I demo song ideas on voice memos and thought I could play them since it's got airplay for iPhone. Uh. No. I have a sonos that works much more effortlessly. Not a fan of this thing. And setup sucked. Made you feel like a third grader reading Latin. Live and learn.

Cons: Setup much more confusing than other devices of similar design. Seems to need to be turned on each time you want to play it, unlike sonos.

Pioneer A4

Peter W from Carmel,NY on 11/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with this WIFI speaker. Set up 3 minutes. Use utube video, a breeze. Fine clear sound. Great bass but not to overwhelm. Looks great, simple and fits any room. Plenty of volume for any room. Would buy it again in a heartbeat! Hard to believe such good sound from a relatively small package. Quick free shipping

Pros: Set up. Sound. Appearance.

Cons: Rarely at one frequency a momentary buzz at midrange. Agree written set up instructions confusing. Use the u tube video, simple as can be!

Too Complex To Set-Up

MelM from Tucson, Az on 11/6/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered it event though the reviews said that the set-up and instructions were terrible. I gave up after a few tries and sent it back. The mammoth instruction sheet was worthless. Another reason to send it back was that the power brick was never pictured and was larger than ones I had for my very old laptop computers. I am sure the sound would be great, but the brick made it ugly where I was going to place it. Crutchfield was great about the return. I am very happy to say they are my preferred audio supplier.

Pros: I don't know the pros since I gave up on the set up.

Cons: Complex set-up. Brick power supply never pictured, but is way too large. It should be built in.

Reviews for the Pioneer A4

Adam from Charlottesville, VA on 10/31/2013

For what I paid, the Pioneer A4 is a good buy. It doesn't have the crisp sound I was hoping for, but it's sitting in a kitchen and does not need to fulfill that requirement.

Pros: Being able to wirelessly connect from my phone or ipod is great. It totally eliminates extra wires. The sound is good for what it is and has no problem filling the space that it is in.

Cons: Connecting the speaker to the router was a pain, but that could be attributed to me not knowing what I was doing. When turning on, it takes an inordinate amount of time to connect to the router.

Too confusing to use

LLW from Harrisburg, PA on 10/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am sorry I bought this speaker. The instructions are impossible to follow. I got it to work once wirelessly with my iPad with Spotify for 30 seconds but that was it. I think the problem is that I'm not getting a LAN connection but after several hours of trying to figure it out I am giving up. The blinking lights on the panel don't even light in their different colors with any consistency, at least that I can tell. You need to be a genius to figure this one out and obviously I am not. When I had it working once, the sound was great but its useless if I can't get it to work. Very frustrating, and I would give it less than one star if I could.

Best Wireless Speaker

B from San Francisco, CA on 9/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the one. Best wireless speaker hands down. If you need to be portable, the A3 is also a great product - it includes a battery but sacrifices the "sub" woofer, which some listeners may prefer. The A4 thumps out some solid bass and clean highs. The center 4" woofer and the ported back do a good job of pushing bass around a small room. Perfect for a bedroom sized space. I like the elegant lines and classic black. AirPlay works great, the app for iOS makes streaming and volume control a breeze, and the USB port allows for playback, charging and remote control of your device....I use this a bunch with my old iOS devices. Definitely, a 5 out of 5. Just buy it already...

Pros: Hi-Fi sound, deep-rich bass, simple but elegant design, wireless galore...including wireless direct (no internet needed to enjoy wireless playback) perfect size, set-up was a snap using the iPhone, 5 drivers and a series of dedicated amps

Cons: No EQ, can't disable the bass for late night listening...sorry neighbor

Amazing sound

Tommy 2 from Watervliet MI on 9/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is a bit time consuming getting the speaker programmed but well worth the effort and time. The sound produced from this speaker is amazingly clear, I hear my music played at a whole new level. Reminds me of the older amplified split systems with the huge speakers, I really didn't think I could get this sound out of a wireless speaker. I couldn't get this quality of sound out of my Bluetooth Bose Soundlink, perhaps it's a combination of airplay and the outstanding engineering of this speaker. Whatever it is I'm one happy customer.

Pros: Great Sound, Airplay, An Engineering Marvel.

Cons: Time consuming programming, for me anyway, but worth it!

Great sound for a little box.

MRDS from Guam on 9/15/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The other reviewers were correct in that programming could be time consuming. The easiest way around it is using Airplay via your Apple iPhone/iPod/iPad. Once you get started, you will be amazed at the sound. I was hearing SFX from the movie I was watching that I did not notice before, even when I had headphones. I wish Pioneer did a better job with the physical design and offered another color other than black.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Program instructions.

Nice speaker

A from Arlington, VA on 9/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a pretty good sounding speaker, with some nice features. When on sale (about 50% off) it is reasonable, but list price seems high, and at that price point there is other competing products to consider.

Pros: Nice features: Airplay streaming, built in internet radio tuner and Pandora client, aux input, and iPhone/ipod usb input.

Cons: The Pioneer Control App is clunky and there is much room for improvement.

Another great speaker from Pioneer

BobH from ELLIJAY, GA on 8/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was reading about Airplay, but didn't have an Airplay speaker, when I saw Crutchfield had the Pioneer A4 for a great price. It came quickly in excellent condition. It was easy to set up, although the instructions weren't well laid out. The speaker system is everything I hoped for and more. The sound is superb, with lots of subtle detail. I had it set up to play on my iPhone, iPad, and Macbook in no time.

Pros: Easy to set up. Great sound.

Cons: Instructions could be laid out better.

Pioneer A4 Big sound-small package!

Big E from Ohio on 8/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this product for dual purpose use. Mainly backyard usage for listening to internet radio through my iphone. I was a little confused with the airplay feature, but pretty sure problems are with wi-fi signal and total lack of tech info/understanding on my part. Plugged in using usb cord and was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality-full sound and very good bass! Way more than I expected. Also used this for an outdoor cruise in for background music, but was pleasantly surprised when my wife asked me to turn it down a little so the people nearby could hold conversation more clearly. Overall, love it!

Pros: Good sound quality, not too large or heavy, easily transportable.

Cons: Would have liked rechargeable powerpack as on A3. Airplay feature a little confusing?

Cons: a little difficult on wireless setup.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price it can't be beat. Amazing full sound from a small package. Easy set up

Pros: Price. Set up. Design. Sound.

Cons: Needs constant power source. Would be nice to have a chargeable feature.

solid speaker

Mark from Eden Prairie, MN on 7/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this speaker. The setup was easy to do for connecting the wifi. I can click play in iTunes at my computer and the speaker powers on automatically. The only downside that I see is that I can forward and reverse through my play list, but once I hit pause with the remote, I have to restart playing from my computer. I'm hoping there is a work around to this. It would be nice if they had designed in a base and treble adjustment. I had to download an equalizer app so I could adjust it with my iPhone.

Pros: sound, plenty of bass, plenty of power

Cons: needs bass and treble controls

Pioneer A4

Very good for the price.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: Keeps blinking low signal even when very close to wifi source

Pioneer A4

scotto from Hawaii on 6/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great and solid bass. Hard to set up over the WI-FI. the directions are a little confusing because there are so many different ways to connect. Each gets a minimum of instruction. I could never get it to stream over my air play/ apple, but I think its my computers fault- not the pioneer. I now stream it wirelessly using Airfoil and it works perfect every time.

I purchased the speaker for my wife as a Christmas gift. I have only used the speaker a couple of times and haven't noticed it shutting off prematurely , we usually listen to Pandora. I highly recommend the A4 it has a strong base line sound and a decent preset mix I was really surprised how well the speaker sounded. The only con is that the speaker has no base and treble adjustment. It is a great speaker and well worth the money. To answer your question I am not sure , I would suggest going to pioneers web sight, support quick links contact for the answer. [ LARRY D  Jan 07, 2014 ]
There is no sort of that type of feature for the A4 , but the one draw back of using the Airplay feature is that, once you turn the A4 off ,not standby , you half to program the whole Airplay function all over again! every time .( sad ) [ MIGUEL E  Jan 06, 2014 ]
Yes it does shut itself off. I have never checked how long it takes. I'm not aware of a way to disable it. [ ROBERT  Jan 06, 2014 ]
This is directly from the owners manual: During use of AirPlay or DMR input, if no music is played or this unit's controls are not operated for 20 minutes or more, the unit's power will automatically be switched OFF. I do not know if this feature can be disabled. [ Robert  Jan 06, 2014 ]
If you put it in quickstart mode, it will automatically turn on when it starts to receive a stream and automatically shut off after a no stream is received for a period of time of if you deselect it as an airplay device from the source. However, this is not completely reliable. I have had to manually turn on the unit several times when it didn't recognize the start of a stream. That appears to happen at random. The A4 has something called "quick start" which is a sleep mode that it goes into after no use (not sure when), but jumps out of "sleep" very quickly and always shows as an available spearker on iphones even in sleep mode etc. I'm finding I generally don't need to physically touch the A4 when I use it. It's just always available which is great. One concern I have - and this maybe airplay or my network more than the device - is that it temporarily goes quiet for a few seconds every now and again which is a little disturbing. Also note - this device only works with the G protocol not N. [ NICK  Jan 06, 2014 ]
I'm just a few weeks into owning and using the A4 and have noted the same issue. I've not yet looked into whether it can be disabled and will be curious to find out as I too find "auto shut-off" counter-intuitive. [ Loretta  Jan 06, 2014 ]
The A4 does have an auto shutoff, I believe it kicks in after an hour or something like that. While it does have a "rapid start" feature that makes it take much less time to power on (at the cost of using more electricity), you still have to interact with the speaker (physically) in order to turn it on. Although the directions to connect aren't 100% clear, yes you are able to stream audio from your computer over the speaker. Even without air play, the speaker allows for a wireless connection to any device with Bluetooth [ RYAN  Dec 10, 2013 ]
I assume you mean wirelessly connect. I haven't tried with my PC. Works well with itunes and Mac. You can always use 3.5mm jack to connect [ BENJAMIN W  Dec 10, 2013 ]
Sorry, I cannot answer your ? . I only tried the A4 with an iPad via Bluetooth. I was not happy with the bass response, and returned it . I bought a Peacthtree. Deep Blue unit, an I am completely satisfied with it. [ FRANK  Dec 10, 2013 ]
