An ever-expanding pool of apps

AppRadio works with many popular music apps, like AUPEO! Personal Radio, Pandora® Internet radio, DashCommand, Rdio, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX. And over time, you can bet that more and more apps will be available to use with the sleek app interface. Pioneer includes a GPS antenna, so you can use the MotionX GPS Drive™ and INRIX® traffic apps to add navigation to this receiver's arsenal of features.

Talk hands-free and enjoy Pioneer sound quality

Built-in Bluetooth® adds to the versatility of this cool receiver — pair your phone and you'll be able to talk hands-free, and have access to your phone book from the touchscreen, too. And this full-featured receiver includes Pioneer's powerful MOSFET built-in amp, a 3-band equalizer, AM/FM tuner, and a set of preamp outputs for connecting an outboard amp or powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: This receiver is not compatible with the iPhone 5. If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Complement your setup with a phone mount

This receiver requires input from your iPhone from time to time during operation — most notably when running the MotionX GPS Drive app. It's a good idea to mount your iPhone where it's easy to reach. Check out our selection of Pro.Fit mounts.

This smartphone receiver will not play CDs. If you want to play CDs in your vehicle, we offer a wide selection of CD receivers.

    Appradio huh?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I never really used it how it was expected because when it came out I expected to be able to hook up my iPhone 5 to it. I went with purchasing a used iPhone 4 and leaving that hooked up to the radio at all times and connecting it via hotspot on my iPhone 5. It never worked how i had hoped. I suppose that's no fault of the head unit. It did lack many cool features that jailbreaks did provide, such as background photo change and an app icon list that included any phone apps that you wanted to display. I did have some communication problems with the cable on occasion.

I was very happy with this unit till I downloaded the ISO 7 now it has become a pain.

    Pros: Sounds great looks cool

Cons: Startup time a little slow and ISO 7 makes it crash I have no clue what to do but hit the rest button!

    Not a Long-Term Solution

SactoC from Sacramento, CA on 10/10/2013

If you are looking for a company that will support its products over the long term, Pioneer might not be the company for you. I have had the AppRadio for a little over two years now. When the unit worked, it worked very well. However, the biggest problem has been Pioneer's failure to keep up with the iOS updates. Pioneer had problems with both the iOS6 and iOS7 updates, and in fact did not release a warning not to upgrade to iOS7 until late in the afternoon of the iOS7 release date. By that time, I and may other AppRadio owners had already updated. It's now three weeks later and Pioneer has been completely silent about any fixes. On top of that, the iPhone cables are expensive and poorly constructed. I have had two cables go bad just through daily use. After the second one failed, I tore it apart and re-soldered all the connections so that I wouldn't have to pay for a new cable.

Pros: Great interaction with navigation and music apps (when it works)

Cons: Slow boot-up; expensive cables; no iOS7 support (yet); clock does not stay current (loses time). The native iTunes/iPod app is clunky (the CarMedia App has a far better interface). Poor cable construction and quality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cannot believe that after only 9 months I now have a worthless piece of junk in my dash. By updating to IOS7, this App radio will no longer recognize my iPhone or iPod. What a waste of money. Shame on you Pioneer! After all the great products I have purchased from Crutchfield over the years, I would hope they'd see the wrong and try to make it right. Crutchfield do the right thing and drop Pioneer products. We'll still buy products from you, just not Pioneer.

    Pros: None

Cons: Piece of junk that Pioneer promised to update but not living up to that promise.

    Difficult, then worthless

Initially this system seemed to work great. Then all of thee screens I had to agree to some safety agreement became annoying. It's ability to play itunes from your phone is nice once you get used to the controls. IOS7: This installed on my iphone 4s basically made my head unit worthless. what a piece of junk!

Pros: Easy navigation for itunes and apps.

Cons: doesn't support IOS7 or the Iphone 5.

    Really sucks now

George K from Memphis, TN on 9/20/2013

Ok, so I'm probably going to confuse a lot of readers here. I got this cheap, it does all I want it to do (although not always in a stellar manner) and I really love it! I built a dock, installed rear camera, etc. etc. etc... As I said, for the price - I LOVE IT! Despite some glitches, freezes and a number of other short-comings, I L-O-V-E IT!!! BUT!!!!! .....Now I am told that Pioneer will no longer support it with updates!? Since the Apple iOS7 update I am prevented from updating my phone and I am sooo mad at Pioneer, I will never buy another Pioneer item as long as I have breath left in me!!! WE, that bought the first Appradios, built the customer-base for subsequent AppRadios and this is how Pioneer thank us?! The main reason for going with a brand like Pioneer was because I had faith that they wouldn't desert me!? Everyone knows how fickle technology is lately?! Everyone releases products and maintains them with software revisions?! By not supporting their products, Pioneer has abandoned us as customers; is this what they have become?! What confidence can ANY consumer have that Pioneer will support ANYTHING in the future?! Do they think we will continuously keep buying new stuff?! If they don't sort this out, they will anger a LOT of their customers and they WILL get hurt - after reading dozens of angry blogs on the matter, that's my prediction - even from people who don't own Pioneer. Time will tell...?

Pros: Great everything... Even though it only does it in a "good/decent" fashion, it does everything "I" need it to do:- music, navigation, hands-free telephone, radio, movies (via an app); it has decent sound and it looks absolutely great in my dash.

Cons: It only does one thing at a time, the constant aggravation of the warning screens (we should be able to disable those screens and waive Pioneer's responsibility?), the chunky cable that connects to the phone is awful, it needed a dedicated one-touch mute button, I would've liked the ability to change my background on the home screen, a rotary volume knob would be much better than the stupid buttons, the screen locks-up about once a week. IT NEEDS A SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR iOS7!!

Got it because it was heavily discounted. It's very cool. I really like the simple interface. The display is very nice too. The sound quality is great and Bluetooth phone work well.

Pros: Cool Display, Great Sound, Clear Bluetooth, Easy Control Design, Coolness. Clean looking install!

Cons: No Bluetooth streaming.. Boot up time slow, does not resume where it left off with your music, only compatible with phone that is soon to be discontinued. :-(

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a Scratch and Dent. It was a major discount and was a great deal. I would've been a bit disappointed if I paid full cost. The unit is slow to respond to the start up and when linking to the iPhone. Once things are turned on, it is not too bad. I wanted a Bluetooth unit because I had one in a 2013 Prius rental. That linked with the iPhone with no wired hookup for music and phone. That would be my holy grail. It was an elegant deal. This is reasonable for the cost. I suspect Pioneer will get it better as time progresses.

Pros: Bluetooth phone. iPhone tie in via USB.

Cons: Klunky software, not too annoying time lags when starting. You have to go through a process every time you start the car.

    Should have never been made.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cheaply made with so many glitches one can't even list them all. The worst glitch is when you try to go from pandora to the iPhones music the radio tweaks out and defaults back to pandora. You have to treat the media cable like a dainty flower or it WILL brake causing you at least a weak of pain. The radio goes into this "screen savior" mode, which is a add for the radio, that you cannot turn off. Every time you exit the app section of the radio and try to enter back in you have to "confirm" the command on the iPhone, then half the time it will glitch out. Finally there is no off button! So during many of it's glitches you can't even shut the thing off.

Pros: Good blue tooth function, sounds good when working.

    Cons: Glitchy, cheaply made

Okay, first off let me explain that I originally decided not to purchase this App Radio due to so many negative reviews. But the price of this unit is what kept me interested and my decision was made to purchase it. After all, we do have sixty days to decide right? Well, now I know that I will not be returning this unit in exchange for anything else. It is exactly what I need. I too am having a bit of trouble learning the system, but that is because I am currently learning how the system works. As with all electronic products, there is a breaking in period (for the operator as well). I enjoy listening to my music through Itunes and Pandora. I enjoy the bluetooth feature for phone conversations and I am still deciding on which Navigation App works for me. Also, Crutchfield is always there for us when we need them. Thanks to their Master Sheet and supplied accessories for the install, I was able to complete the install within an hour. Thank you again Crutchfield.

Pros: For $150.00, I have myself an App Radio. Be sure to purchase through Crutchfield for their outstanding customer service.

    Cons: None.

For the price you get a pretty cool touch screen radio. Must have an iPhone to get extra benefits. The manual has directions on hooking rear channel as a sub channel and suggests that you can set the crossover points (this does not seem true). The sub crossover cannot be set for the internal amp, only works with the preamp outs. Do not try to adjust EQ while driving (3.5 stars overall)

Pros: cool touch screen radio easy installation

Cons: no loudness button difficult EQ crossover on preamp only AppRadio application is glitchy (but works) GPS too slow (not usable)

Overall I really Like the unit. The sound quality is great, and I really like the functionality of the unit. The integration is great. So far, I have not had any technical issues with the product whatsoever. The only thing I dont like are the parking break safeties and that you have to specificly allow access to your phone everytime you want to use apps. I would recommend this product.

Pros: Excellent quality and functionality, especially for the price.

Cons: parking break safeties and that you have to specificly allow access to your phone everytime you want to use apps.

I had high hopes that the AppRadio would seamlessly integrate my iPhone into my car, no so. True is provide sound, telephone and navigation through my iPhone which is better that the factory installed unit in my wife's car. I found the catch being that I first had to recognize that it did not operate like a plug'n p lay apple product. The two main drawbacks are the AppRadio app that interfaces with the iPhone and the parking brake interlock. The works most to the time, requiring me to unlock my iPhone and allow the iPhone to connect to the AppRadio, it gets tiring on a day when you're in and out of the car repeatedly. This app sometime gets confused, required the app to 'forced to quit" and relaunched. THe parking brake interlock, requires a off/on/on sequence that also get confused and will then not allow that App Radio to display the iPhone on the screen. This also frustrating.

Pros: Coolness. Car Intergation with the iPhone. A choice of Apps for navigation, though limited.

Cons: Poor interface with the IPhone and parking brake.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I bought this unit as a "scratch and dent". Other than the open box, I was hard pressed to find anything sratch or dent about this unit. Saved a few bucks and got a really nice unit. This is an older model so I wasn't expecting much out of it. That being said, I am, so far, really impressed with it. The unit arrived ver quickly (ordered it on Friday, got it on Wednesday), not Amazon Prime quickly, but only a day longer. The packaging was excellent. I didn't get all the installation extras you would normally get from Crutchfield since I got the Sratch and dent unit, but I did get the Master Sheet which showed how to take my dash appart and how to attach the brackets and such. Installation was pretty simple, even with my odd Infinity system wiring. I didn't have to call Crutchfield for help, but it was nice knowing I could have called if I'd gotten stuck. It took me very little time to figure out how to navigate the screens. While there aren't a whole lot of apps that are compatible with the system, the ones that work are very usefull. You get several choices in each area. There are several music streaming apps, GPS apps, and location services apps to choose from. The sound from the unit is very good with plenty of control over the sound using the EQ settings. Radio staions are picked up well and sound great. I haven't made a phone call yet, so I can't review the Bluetooth other than to say the set up was easy and it connects quickly. Overall, I really like this head unit.

Pros: Crisp, bight display with plent of control over brightness and contrast AND a nightime dimmer. Great sound Good selection of app types Easy Bluetooth pairing and connection Easy install Great looking unit iPhone/iPod cable included GPS antenna included External microphone included Lots of control over the souond quality

Cons: Limited number of apps Screen is pretty responsive to touch, but could be better Using non-app features while using an app is a little cumbersome (until you realize swithing apps on your phone is easiest) No way to switch from app to app on unit with out backing out of app feature and relaunching app feature (use you phone, it easier)

When I saw this deck, I had to have it. REading reviews everything (for the most) was on the up and up, however not true. While this HU is very cool, it's just lacking. Far to many "bugs" and my patience was tested on a regular basis. I installed a rearview with it (Its an option, why not) but at least once a week the screen would freeze, you would think, just shut it off, it'll reboot, not so. There's no actual power button, crazy. Besides the constant freezing, the touch screen was far from precise, and really only worked when it wanted too. The Apps offered, suck, no way to sugar coat it. Too many units offer Pandora & iheart links to even be a selling point, and the rest are useless. If you looking for a Touchscreen, look elsewhere... I had this in my 06 Colorado, and it stayed in there when I traded it a few weeks back.

Pros: It looks really cool, and when it works as it should, it really is a decent unit. The sound quality was a huge boost to my aftermarket speakers. Crutchfield sent anything and everything needed for a quick & easy install.

Cons: The radio itself. Glitchy, over sensitive, and even for the price, still not worth the aggravation. Pass on this one, spend a few more $.

i purchased this product on a scratch and dent deal, it arrived in great shape and installed quite easily. i love the way it works and looks, the sound quality is crisp and clear. however there is no CD player....the iphone cord it comes with works great if you dont have a case, i have to use an adapter to get it to work with my life proof case and because of that it tends to be temperamental and cut in and out . the microphone i have been told sounds like a walkie talkie on the other end but im also told that is and easy fix. the APP pioneer uses can be a little frustrating to set up and get use to....its annoying that it doesn't automatically connect to the unit you have to always approve it and that your app use is limited such as you cant use google maps or maps...etc but overall it was a good buy and works well enough that i am happy with it, just be aware of what you are buying because it is what it is...plain and simple its called an APP radio for a reason.

Pros: easy to use, easy to install, sounds great, touch screen

Cons: only works with iPhone, the iphone cord is of the old style, can be a little temperamental , no CD player, microphone impute sound quality

My car stereo use is primarily using the radio and an occasional CD. The radio sounds clearer and the stations seem to switch faster. The radio will display text from the station, but it is presented awkwardly (it shows part of the info, but will correct the spelling and cut off the text randomly it seems). I also am still trying to find a mute or off button. The iPod controls are awkward- it's touch screen, but there are up/down and select buttons. Pandora is the big plus. The interface is nice when it's working (I've had the unit installed for a week and it has had issue loading 2-3 times, though it will play whatever the last station you had it on if you play it through the iPod interface). There have been 1-2 time the touch screen hasn't responded. It seems like a lot of negatives, but overall it has performed how I expected (after researching it).

Eq could be a bit better but it sounds good. It does everything I need for a fraction of the price of other radios. The only thing I miss is a CD player but I'm getting over that.

This in dash double din radio is unbeatable for the price. It has a very clean look, both while on and off. It doesn't attract much attention with shiny buttons while off, which probably helps trick thieves into thinking it's a stock radio. The App Radio has a lot of cool features and apps. Sound quality is great / easy to adjust. Screen resolution is fairly good. Better than more expensive units. The backup camera works great. Ipod functions are very easy to control.

Pros: Looks awesome. Easy to use. Inexpensive. Good resolution. Good sound quality. Relatively quick processor.

Cons: Slow to startup. Cannot get rid of button "beep" sound. App Radio apps are a bit glitchy. A bit limited selection for frequency range in mid to low speakers.

I bought this radio about 2 weeks ago. I wanted something to control my Pandora as well as Bluetooth. This radio is pretty awesome. I read a lot of negative reviews on this radio, but I am here to tell you, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! I did a lot of research with this particular radio and the iPhone 4S (which I have). If you read the instruction book, install the radio correctly and understand that ALL electronics have bugs, you will love this radio. The only issue I had was understanding that the radio will not play once you are in app mode. Videos show fine. All of the apps offered by Pioneer are not needed. I only have Pandora, iHeart, NavFree, Car Media player (which is the best) and MotionX.

Pros: Easy to use, once you learn how it works.

Cons: Does not support music through Bluetooth.

Very well built and extremely simple to install. Gives my interior a modern touch that I love, not to mention the boost in sound quality! The integration with iPhone is flawless and being able to use pandora and GPS apps through the head unit is incredibly satisfying

Pros: Sleek, excellent quality, simple to navigate through menus, no bugs

Cons: Limited support for apps, although new apps are added regularly. I do wish there were more supported apps but the ones chosen are very helpful

This is a very stylish and easy to use unit. Although there are a few newer models out today, it still looks and feels like a new product. The touch screen is capacitive and is very easy to manipulate. The radio feature is what you would expect, but there are a few cool additions. I like how you can type in any station you want. The ipod feature works very well and now i don't have to hook up my phone using a cassette adapter! I do not use apps really but the gps and pandora work great. Finally the bluetooth stores your contacts and lets you talk hands free with the included microphone. You can even dial a number directly from the unit. I knew nothing about car stereos or wiring and was able to install everything just fine.

Pros: Sound quality Build quality Style Touch screen Radio iPod cable that also charges your device Apps! Bluetooth/phone cohesiveness

Cons: I'm pretty sure that you can't play music through Bluetooth... But I may be wrong...

I am enjoying the DA02. I was told by tech Supp that it was a iPhone 4S only model. That was fine by me as I don't have plans to upgrade soon and the radio was on a great sale. I additionally had a coupon so the head unit was more than reasonable. The App menus are a bit quirky. It seems lawyers got hold of the software before it went out. There has to have two pulls of the parking brake to get apps to work and since app are where the GPS resides it doesn't make much sense. reading the forums, there are some complicated workarounds. Other than that its cool.

Pros: Iphone, GPS and music in the car including SIRI!

Cons: Parking brake on for apps.

Great resolution in screen. Easy to make modification if u have a jailbroken iphone. Sometimes its said iphone failed if u connected before it start up. Starup take about 10 seconds. Anoying. I bought this based on the price... this price with all the installation stuff included was great. I added a backup camera and set up my wife's F150 pretty sweet. Yes, it is a bummer that it only works with iPhone 4 and 4s. But that is what she has for now. I figured, just for the backup screen alone it was worth the price. And even if she gets an iPhone 5, she can still listen to music on it. I just wished that it had Audio Streaming.

    Cons: No BT Audio Streaming.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What's the point of a touch screen that controls your phone if you constantly have to touch your phone to use this unit. There are too few buttons on this unit first of all. In order to make a phone call you need to navigate the menus instead of simply having a phone/voice control dedicated button. The biggest issue here is that when you choose the Apps Icon on the head unit, this automatically launches the App on the iPhone. Every time it launches you need to tap "Allow" on the iPhone. This means that if you switch to radio or iPod, you need to tap "Allow" on the iPhone when you switch back to Apps. This can somewhat be disabled requiring the "Allow" to be tapped on the first launch, but there is another big problem. When you play Pandora, the Pandora app takes over and there is no way to switch to another app unless you quit the app from the iPhone. Essentially you'll need to mount your iPhone next to this head unit since you'll be touching it constantly, which makes the entire touch screen somewhat irrelevant. There was a firmware update which I did run, but the problems still existed, prompting it to be returned for a basic head unit with a dedicated phone button and Pandora. I will mount the phone on the dash next to it and simply use the iPhone's navigation. Solved... Nice try Pioneer, but obviously your software engineers are not using this product in every day use. BTW I was using an iPhone 4S for this review.

Pros: Nice Looking Decent Sound Quality

Cons: Functionality Lack of dedicated buttons Buggy software compatibility

Well first of all i did my review and rattings for weeks before buying my next truck radio. And i found the app radio from pioneer ive always loved pioneer. This stereo has it all for iphone users and android as well. So much to do with it its like your portable tablet or ipad.. The sound is better than o thought i run it on a 10" kicker cvr and a 600 watt crunch amp with 2 6.5 pioneer speaker and two 6.5 alpine's and boy does the sound explode in my system who knew the small system i have could be so awesome. The gps is perfect and safe to use the web browsing is awesome as well movies youtube facebook woah i could go on and on oh yeah! And the bluetooth is the best as well. Well foremost if you have space for a double deck stereo in your vehicle and love long or short drives this stereo rocks in so many ways i cant explain. A litle slow to activate when it turns on but its the begigning of smart car stereo's and with updates you can expect many more great options to make your drive pleasent or awesome and safe as well. So i give this stereo 5 stars and beyond.. I recomend this stereo to anybody . Thanks crutchfield for the great price and thanks pioneer for the great stereo..

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The unit looks cool and went in with not too much difficulty, however there are multiple safety screens that need to be passed during every power up (which is already pretty slow). The sound was great, however I would have liked to see a real 11 band eq, not 3 adjustments of 3 of the 11 bands. You can use the RCA out as a separate Sub out, which worked out well. Bluetooth worked well for phone calls, stopped and started media before and after phone / direction transmissions(using 1 IPhone for media, the second, over bluetooth for directions). However you cannot connect to your media system over bluetooth. IPhone 4 only, no support for IPods, IPads or Android. The 'Apps' are mediocre at best, and the support for this model appears to be lacking from Pioneer.

Pros: Price on Crutchfield was great on discount and scratch and dent - Bluetooth phone support - Concept of apps and onscreen maps could be good, if properly developed.

Cons: Constant screens prompting your attention to click disclaimers - In consistant connection to Iphone - Lack of support for anything but a Iphone4 (a lot seems to be tied to you data connection as well, which might run up bills) - EQ only allows 3 adjustments(high / mid / low) of only 3 of the 11 bands offered.

OK so the first thing you need to do is upgrade the firmware with the Europe version of 4.16. This found on the Pioneer Europe site. Then you don't have to worry about warning signs. Then jailbreak your 4S and load up AppExtensions. That will let you view all your apps on the screen. I agree that some of the Pioneer recommended apps are not what I wanted but with AppExtensions it will automatically connect to the appradio program on your phone, etc.

Pros: Great looking unit in the dash. Great buying experience from Crutchfield. So good I ordered another one. Bluetooth, IPOD control, Maps, etc.

Cons: Still a work in progress but worth every penny at this price. Scratch and Dent for a great price! and it was in perfect shape.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just the same as many other reviewers, I really wanted this radio to thrill me. Instead I was left in dismay how a half-baked product comes to market. This radio does anything but liberate you from your phone and make interacting with your phone and apps pleasurable. It would be nice if you could plug in your phone, toss it into the glove compartment and then do all your manipulating with the radio. No...sorry, it doesn't work that way. Even just turning the radio on requires you to address a notification on your phone to allow the radio access. I could live with that if that were the only time it required me to access my phone; but it gets worse, Some apps will open and close nicely while interacting with the radio alone. Other apps, such as Rdio won't quit unless you quit the app from your phone. Then there are other apps, such as INRIX which failed to open at all on the radio, The app opened on the iPhone; but I was left staring a black screen on the radio. This happened every time I tried to access the app. Then there were the random crashes and freezes. Speaking of apps, don't expect to have use of all your favorite apps with the Appradio. You only have a handful to choose from. Even though Pioneer shows 30 apps on their website, only 27 were available to me. Finally some are just plain ugly; and you feel as if someone threw them together over the course of a couple of days. The Appradio takes the great user interface of the iPhone and ruins everything you love about it.

    Pros: Sound quality is good

Cons: Requirement to constantly interface between the iPhone and the Appradio Inconsistent behavior of apps Apps crashing and freezing Too few apps that are of any value

I really tried to like the headunit but after a week, I returned it. The main issues were that it was too slow to start/boot up. The unit would take a few minutes to start, then a few minutes to initialize the Iphone, then a few minutes to allow me to fwd songs if I didnt like what was playing. The apps are also not the best since you are stuck with the ones pioneer allows. In the end it felt like a version 1.0 of a good concept. It still needed work.

For the the price I paid it was a good deal. I tried to hook up the Bluetooth with my Doid but was limited to phone calls. No apps would run so I got an IPhone to run the apps THE BAD; the menu on the radio is a annoying to operate. The radio will display safety messages about operating the radio while driving when you switch between apps. When you open an app from the phone you get a message asking if you want to give the radio permission for the operation. So it's not a real hands free operation. If you forget to give the radio permission on the IPhone, the radio will take you to a window with limited functions without telling you why (so keep an eye on the phone) I was not able to load the phone book from the IPhone so I had to scroll through the call history to make calls. There are only a few apps that will work on the radio (22 or so), most of them you have to pay for, you can't just load any app from the IPhone. The free navigation apps are not user friendly, they will display your current location with ease, but to put in a destination you have to mess with them quite a bit. Over all; if you like the IPhone you can't really beat the deal, specially on Crutchfield, they offered everything you need for installation for free ( They also have great customer service and technical service (technical service is free for one year when you purchase a unit)

Pros: Nice big touch screen makes it easy to operate while driving. Once it is set up you can go from one app to another from the IPhone. I got good sound quality from the unit even though there is no sub-woofer hook up. If you were running Pandora when you shut off the vehicle it will resume Pandora when you return, even if you unplugged the phone and plug it back in when you returned.

Cons: The safety messages are the most annoying part of this unit

I almost sent this radio back but I gave it a second chance. A few things you might want to do if you buy this item. checkout avic411 & buy a 2 way switch from any auto part store. For a GPS solution waze works the best. Upgrade the firmware you can get it directly from pioneer.

Pros: Price, the touch screen quality, works great with the iphone 4s, simple layout

Cons: The radio does glitch now and again

For the price, this was a great buy. The unit has a few quirks, but there are a few workarounds for the overwhelming safety features, but aside from that I am pleased with my purchase. Switching between apps does take a bit, but it isn't unbearable. Double pressing the home button on the unit brings up music controls which is a great touch. If I paid full price I don't think I would be as pleased.

Pros: Cheap! Navigation with iPhone Workarounds for most of the issues

Cons: Too many safety features Quirky

Pros: Gps, bluetooth, ipod, pandora, netflix for a very cheap price

Cons: Sometimes its freeze and i have to reset it. Dont have a remote control. To access pandora or the gps you have to unblock the iphone and access the pioneer app and this is very annoying.

Giant piece of junk. Seriously. The touch screen isn't very responsive, the menus are not well organized, it take FOREVER to start up, if you back up before it starts up it freezes up on the back up camera screen, and it randomly freezes up and stops responding to touch. Utterly ridiculous. Sound quality is the only thing good about it. If I'd paid full price for it, I would be royally ticked.

    Pros: Sound quality.

    Cons: Everything else.

So I recently bought the Pioneer APP radio and installed it. As usual Crutchfield Rocks. THe instructions and wiring harness are a excellent touch. The Appradio is excellent but it has glitches. For example if I answer the phone I have to restart the APP. Also I think the safety steps you have to take are a bit much.

Pros: Great price right now. Sound quality.

Cons: Glitches and the boot time. NO MUTE BUTTON (really no mute button). Bluetooth mic is right infront of me and it still sounds distant.

I've been on the hunt for an in dash GPS for my explorer for awhile, when I saw the AppRadio on Crutchfield discounted so low, why not get it! I didn't have very high hopes considering the discount but this head unit is great! (As long as you have an iPhone 4 or 4s) the menus and all around styling is very modern and professional not like what you would see from say a jvc DVD player that has cartoony emblems and menus. And with the recommended apps it really turns it into a great head unit changing apps does take awhile but nothing unbearable. Within 3 minutes of getting in my car I have my playlist playing, I've checked the weather, and I have the GPS app set for my destination. Very good head unit, very classy looking, and I highly recommend it for the price! Just a side note, on the first unit I received the right side of the screen would not respond to any touch, I contacted Crutchfield about the issue and 2 days later I received a replacement, fantastic service as always, do not buy from anywhere but here.

Pros: Sleek design, classy menus, charges your phone, great sound quality, and PRICE!

Cons: No clock on iPod interface, iPod cord is very thick.

Like the title says, it's so-so. It's great in some places and not-so-great in others. The sound is good, at least for me. "Sound aficionados" may not like it. I don't know. The concept of using your iPhone's apps on the radio is also cool. Unfortunately, there aren't many apps out there that can take advantage of the radio. Overall, I liked it, but if you have the money, you should definitely go for something better. It's a good value for what you pay for it.

Pros: - Use your iPhone to expand the radio's features. - Bluetooth allows you to wirelessly talk to others. - UI is nice and sleek.

Cons: - UI is also a bit laggy. There's a noticeable delay between making a choice on the radio. - There's not much to do without connecting an iPhone (or other iOS device). The radio and bluetooth is available, but that's it. - Clock seems to constantly go out of sync. - Sometimes, the radio doesn't even pick up the phone, so you have to turn the car off for 5 minutes so that the radio can reset. - You can't do anything without setting the parking brake.

Completely disappointed! Due to holidays, life, etc, I am beyond my 60 day money back period so I'm stuck with it. Billed as an extension of your iPhone. Ha! If iPhones worked this poorly there would have never been a second model. Cannot switch easily between apps. Pause Pandora and open iPod and Pandora starts playing again. Turn screen off your iPhone while using GPS and screen on unit goes blank. Use phone and you have to re-initialize the Pioneer App. This thing is horrible. Installed mine in a GMC truck with Bose and with nothing playing it has the hiss of an '80's radio. Another annoying trait is the loud chirp you hear every time you tap an icon or press a button that does not seem to be able to be turned down. Glad I got it on sale so I'm not out quite as much.

    Pros: Touch screen works well

Cons: Not user friendly as promised Big promises came up way short

At first I was a little skeptical about this product, and a little concerned that it might be too complicated to use or too glitch with the apps. I was wrong. After installing the unit in my Fiancé's car and playing with it for a few days, I can comfortably say that this is a fantastic unit! It is basically a remote touch screen for the Iphone, but it does a really good job of being a remote touchscreen. You can listen to Pandora or Itunes and still use the phone for other functions. The AppRadio Apps work well and the compatible apps are great. I have used Pandora, IHeart Radio, and a few of the Mapping and Navigation apps. No problems with any . I think the only negative that I have with the functionality of the unit is that sometimes when you are switching between apps a pop-up will appear on the iphone screen asking you to allow the Appradio to access an app. You touch "allow" on the phone and everything is fine. I assume there is a way to disable this somewhere on the iphone, but I haven't figured out how yet. It is a great unit at a great price. If it will fit in your car you should be very happy with it.

Pros: Great Unit Great features Great sound

Cons: You have to occasionally "allow" the app radio to access the iphone

The reception quality of this radio is horrible. I live in the city and this radio can barely pick up our local stations that my old factory radio was able to pickup. Trying to get the iPhone to connect is a bit cumbersome. If you don't connect it in specific order it doesn't connect due to safety reasons. Unfortunately, my son likes the radio and he won't let me return it. It does pick up his radio stations a little better. I hear some noticeable static but it's OK.

    Don't Buy

Garcia from Los Angeles, CA on 1/27/2013

I bought this unit back in October. For the price I figured what the heck, and bought it. First let me say that I'm a HUGE fan of pioneer, I have an AVIC-X930-BT in another vehicle of mine, I installed this unit in my Ford Fusion. The sound quality out of the radio is not the best I've ever heard, half of that is my problem since I'm still running the stock system in my car and using the App Radio to power the speakers. When you plug in the phone, you have to ok the radio to connect with the phone, by pressing confirm on the iPhone. After you do this the screen opens into the "App Radio Dash Board" From this menu, you cannot access iPod music, you have to hit the "home" button on the unit then select music from that home screen. It's really kind of a pain not to mention that the unit is not really touch based, when your in the music app on the radio you have to use two directional up and down arrows to navigate in the app, you cant just touch the title of the song, or touch playlist or artists, etc... If you want to use GPS Drive or Waze and the radio function, you can't. When you activate the radio, then go into app mode, it terminates the radio and vice-versa. Like another reviewer said, GREAT IDEA but poor execution, I'm taking it out of my car this weekend and putting my stock system back in.

Pros: Attractive price, Looks nice in the car.

Cons: User Interface is terrible, Sound quality is sub par.

Great idea, terrible execution. I read the other reviews for this product and thought well it might work for me, I just want to be able to listen to the music on my phone and maybe play pandora. I don't need any other apps to run on this unit. It still isn't worth wasting your time with this unit. It has pop up warning screens that appear constantly, the most dangerous part of this unit is trying to get the pop ups (telling you to be careful) off the screen while driving. Pioneer should be ashamed of this product. I have several other pioneer touch screen units in other cars and there great. This unit should be taken off the shelves today and scrapped. Any one who says this unit is good has never used a proper touch screen unit in there car. Spend a few more bucks and get it done right.

Seriously thinking of returning this for a Kenwood. Which hurts, been a loyal pioneer guy in home and car for over a decade. I bought this for the ipod control. Plain and simple. The ipod interface is the worst I have come across. Pioneer did better at this years ago. The reason this "radio" is so cheap has to be because they almost have to give them away. No clock in ipod mode, no way to control ipod from main screen. No repaet function ive found with the ipod control either. And dont think you can get this and actually use the touch screen. Cant touch a playlist to play it, have to use arrows and such to select, then you have to pick a song or shuffle with the same arrow keys. Does sound good, but I already want to throw it out the window at 65..... Pioneer dropped the ball on this one.

I think many people have touched upon the time it takes to turn on which to me is a bit annoying. Other than that the radio is easy to use with space to save a ton of stations with 3 blocks of six i believe. It wasn't difficult at all to install the only issue is fitting in the wires for the gps booster and mic so that the unit fits in the dash. But apart from all that it hooked up very well, has a nice picture, is reasonably easy to use with my iphone and the GPS apps are also a very great value for money bonus not to mention the hands free aspect. Overall great value for money.

Pros: GPS, Bluetooth, ease of use, simple to change EQ and other settings

While much better than my stock Mazda RX8 head unit feature wise and sound wise, the lawyers at Pioneer have turned what could be a great device into a legal warning machine that greatly diminishes the user experience. While I am a bit tech savvy - I could not see the average person using this without getting frustrated with getting the apps to work properly with head unit. Sometime an app will work with no problems - other times a legal warning will pop up and you can get to app screens - and yesterday all I get is a black screen when I try to open an app. For the price Crutchfield is selling this for, I think it's a worthwhile purchase - if you like a challenge - and I think this will be the wave of the future - just might need to wait for V3 or V4 version.

Pros: Apps, features, sound quality, fm radio sound quality,

I had just got the IPhone 4 and I was looking for a radio at a good price with features. I had been to stores, and all other sites looking for a quality radio. But I search Crutchfield often for comparison looking for quality and value. This radio has it all music, GPS, and Bluetooth. Rhonda but everything in the box I needed to install the radio and once I hooked my alpine MRP500 and TypeR 12 to it my car became a music hall on wheels. The most fun about this radio is when I downloaded the AppRadio apps that was compatible with the radio this super entertainment center came to life. This radio should be more than the current price. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Appradio has a ton of potential but many flaws. First off the overall design is great. Touch screen looks awesome and the interface is attractive. The sound that the unit puts out is nice as well. That is about where the good things stop. The appradio (not the appradio 2) is limited to just ipod and iphone connectivity. If you do not have either plugged in, the only thing you will be able to do is listen to the radio. You CANNOT stream music from any device via the bluetooth. Bluetooth on this model is strictly for calls with an iphone 4/4s only. That means no matter what everytime you get in and out of your vehicle you must attach and detach your phone. Then there comes the Appradio app that you must having running on your phone to have any integration with the system. Also, any "app" that you run from the headunit must also be installed on the phone and running to use it. The interface is glitchy at times and is more work than its worth. Aside from these most demanding issues, Pioneer uses a very unique system to avoid playing video while moving. Please look into this as it will surely complicate installation. There is an external microphone and gps sensors for this unit that can make the install look messy as well unless there is an attention to detail (time/work). You cannot use Apple/Google navigation, you must rely on the 3rd party app they support which frankly sucks. There are only a couple good apps for the unit. Overall, looks nice / but is terrible.

Pros: Build quality is what you would expect from Pioneer. Looks awesome installed and very sleek. Extremely low price (but for a reason). Crutchfield provides everything you need as always. If you like to tinker with things, there are ways around the Appradio flaws ("Appradio Extensions").

Cons: Interface is terrible. Should be able to plug phone and go, but constantly having to access your phone to confirm apps, and to respond to prompts makes this headunit dangerous. App selection is poor. Lack of buetooth functionality with other devices is frustrating (as the unit has bluetooth). No interal storage or thumb drive compatibility. No disc drive (although that is a given). *** People typically upgrade their phone every 2 years (at a maximum), keep that in mind - Only works with 4/4s

I did extensive price checks both locally and online (Also chatted with Abe as Best Buys site states that this will not fit in my 2012 Pathfinder. Not only did Crutchfield have the best price, but they included installation parts as well for my 2012 Pathfinder. I read other reviews that had mixed responses, but I am incredible happy. I downloaded the NavFree app and it works great too. One additional note, When I purchased my AppRadio 2 I paid $179.99 for everything and was about to review the radio and saw that now the price is $159.99 (So I went to the online chat (about 5 minutes ago) and asked what the price guarantee was and Keller credited my account to reflect the new price in about 3-5 business days.

I love this unit! Yes I got the unit at a great value thanks to crutchfield and everything that came along worked flawlessly together. My factory system sounds better than ever and the ease if use is just like the iPhone. I know many people against the app radio but I'm all for it. Thanks crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After getting the unit installed, and setup, I noticed the radio had tons of pop ups. For safety and for pairing, and for hooking up the iPhone. It was constant. Extremely annoying, and you cannot turn it off after you had learned all of what needs to be done. There were popups in my phone I would have to hit, and on the radio. It actually made using the thing at all on the road unsafe. So, to go from Music to Pandora was difficult, and had popups to mess with too. I know some of it is gov regulation, but there should be a point where you have seen them a thousand times and can turn it off. Nevermind if you want to watch video. That is such a pain. If you already have the e brake on, it's going to ask you to release and reapply it a couple times before it works. Then there will be a couple more popups, then you have to jockie back and forth between the phone and radio to make it all work. Extremely unintuitive. Great idea, poor execution. Sounded great, screen was great and very responsive, it functioned. But was not user friendly. My wife would have never been able to figure this thing out. I am considering sending it all back.

Pros: Good screen and overall unit quality. Good sound. Easy to install on GM.

Cons: Not user friendly. Too many popups. Difficult to use due to swapping between the phone and unit constantly. Unsafe to switch between apps or radio/pandora/Music. I would not recommend this for anyone that has any issues using newer technology either. It would be impossible to use for them.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I mentioned to thank the lawyers because this radio has toooooo many legal and safety prompts. As a matter of fact it defeats the purpose of protecting the driver as it interrupts your concentration on the road. It easily cycles through 3 to 4 prompts at RANDOM times. It prompts you when you start the radio. It prompts you immediately after to "ignore" the iphone allow prompt. It promps you only SOMETIMES to engage the emergency break (sometimes when switching to apps while driving) in which it only SOMETIMES recognizes the engagement. It prompts you when you attempt to choose "Apps" from the main menu and states you may not watch video while driving blahblahblah (sometimes in the middle of driving when pressin apps). I just want to simply press "Apps" and then "Pandora" so I can listen to music. None of which has VIDEO. Pioneer - remove all of these useless prompts and get a 4 star review.

Pros: Very sleek. Has physical button volume control. Was easy to install. Phone quality is mediocre. Menu is organized. Displays radio station text. Adequate power for my stock speakers. Price was right.

Cons: Far too many prompts makes this radio almost unusable and defeats the purpose of safe driving Screen is not bright enough at maximum "5". Can barely see the screen during the day from driver seat angle No manual power off button Cannot turn off the "beep" when navigating the menus Touch screen is slow to respond immediately after when switching screens The built in itunes is poor. No swipe feature The clock does not display when using apps and is tiny in radio mode

Awesome radio. There were a lot of mixed reviews about this product, and most said that you have to love apple products to like this radio, and they are right. Without A iPhone, this radio is just a am/fm radio that has a touch screen. But that's fine, because I have a iPhone. Installation was pretty simple, and took about an hour. If you want to wAtch videos on the radio, then you have to connect a line to the parking brake, which was probably the hardest part of the installation. The display is very nice, and looks greAt. The only problem I have found is there are some bugs, like if you go to navigation while listening to music, the music stops playing. Overall, the radio I'd great( if you have a iPhone).

It sucked at 1st, but I now love it.

When I first bought this receiver, I just hated it. Pioneer had lousy customer support, except for one individual, and the instructions did not bother to explain that the white orb upon setup was a screen calibrate function. The Pioneer app, Appradio, that controls it is mediocre at best. It only allows a few worthwhile apps on the screen control menu, and the rest are worthless. Of particular annoyance to me for my Droid RAZR is that Appradio had not registered Google's fabulous Navigator GPS on it's menu, Furthermore, my annoyance with this radio was compounded when turned on the Appradio, I had to pair the phone manually and even that was touchy. It all changed when I paid $29 for an after market app called ARLiberator. Loading that app will now give you full control of the Appradio and you can now configure the screen any way you want. Loading that app will require one to "root" smartphone and remove Appradio from the phone. The rooting files can be obtained via any PC connected to the web by loading a few Motorola drivers and some other ones from the places like CNET. Now my Appradio kicks butt.

Pros: Great 7 inch screen Good sound quality Fairly simple Install

Cons: Mediocre customer support from Pioneer Mediocre Pioneer App to control the radio Requires "rooting" your Droid for proper operation

I did a lot of research on this and was aware of the iPhone 5 issues, I decided to take a chance because of Crutchfields price and return/exchange policy. I can confirm that this unit is basically useless with an iPhone 5. Pioneer says they are working on it, we'll see. Luckily my daughter has my old iPhone 4s so I am going to swap my iPhone 5 with her until Pioneer comes out with a fix. I tried the iPhone 5 with the lightning cable that comes with the phone as well as the old 30 pin connector with the lightning adapter and the Pioneer iPhone cable that came with the Appradio, none of it worked on the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4s works perfectly, so based on the 4s, this is a great head unit. Most of the apps that can interface directly with the Appradio are very nice. A few disappointments are that Waze GPS currently has a bug in it that doesn't allow you to type anything in and Apple maps doesn't allow turn by turn directions, I hope those 2 things get sorted out. Waze does do turn by turn directions with street names, and it lowers the level of any audio you're listening to, then turns it back up after it give the direction. There are other compatible GPS programs, but I like Waze and Apple maps. The CarMediaPlayer app that controls your iPod music is really nice. Pandora is very nice. Bluetooth hands free calling seems to be nice so far. You can use other internet radio stations, they just don't give you any info or feedback on the head unit, you just get the audio

Pros: Nice screen, good sound, some good apps available.

Cons: No iPhone 5 compatibility....come on Pioneer!!!! The radio doesn't have HD and gets more static than my last aftermarket head unit.

The radio looks greats but there are bugs in the software. Every time you press one of the functions, radio for example, it goes to pandora. You then have to hit the home button again and go to the function you want to go to. This such a hassle when your driving and want to switch from radio to itunes for example. Also, every time you start your car, it always begins with Pandora - very irritating. It also doesn't sync with your iphone contacts the way that you think it would. For example, many of my contacts displayed on the radio are not in alphabetical order but in order of their phone number. The contact list just comes in as one big list of numbers, not anything like what is displayed on your phone. So, as a consequence, you end up using your phone to choose who your calling and then selecting the radio as your speaker source. I've had the radio for a week and I've got to spend the extra money and get something that works. This radio looks cool but is just too much of an aggravation to use. Also, got an email from pioneer that states that some key functions will not work with the iphone 5 or the iOS 6 software. You should check it out before you buy.

Pros: Looks great, sounds great, clear screen

Cons: software glitches, compatibility issues with iphone 5 or the iOS 6 software

I was looking for a replacement double DIN radio compatible with my 2012 Subaru Forester. The stock radio had to go. I decided that I did want to keep my GPS seperate from the stereo after realizing I would have to spend close to $1000.00 for a nice performing unit. My. $80.00 TOM TOM ONE worked just fine. I love how quickly it charges the Iphonein the car. Bluetooth function is great. Iphone /Ipod access is with ease. Notice it does tend to lock up if you decide to leave app radio app on Iphone and say go to safari for a search. Just go back to Iphone Pioneer App and it will reset. I did have some difficulty upgrading the unit to a higher OS via the micro SD card, but nothing the staff at Crutchfield couldnt resolve. I paid for this as an open box and with all the installation accessories, how could I go wrong? Unit did bring more life to my factory speakers which I will replace. Great radio, great touchscreen display and function. The GPS motion X app can be used but most features still most be inputed by phone. Buy a cheap seperate GPS unit and you will be happy! Radio reception is a 6 out of 10, can't figure that one out! I have to be 10 miles closer to NYC to pick up AM clear

Pros: Great 7" display, great AMP, easy to use in this day of so many features, IPHONE comes to life

    Cons: Radio reception poor.

This radio needs much improvement, while the sound quality is above any stock radio it falls below the standards of your stock system. The start up time is horrible by the time I back up out of my drive way and i'm on my way it still hasn't started playing any music and makes my backup camera useless. The iPhone interface us very buggy you have to continually dismiss a warning popup on your phone every time you switch between application. It also is not compatible with any iPod which to me seems ridiculous.

    Pros: Netflix YouTube Pandora

Cons: No CD not compatible with iPods, slow and unresponsive.

The app's work great and having my iPhone 4 work with my radio was a dream come true. It's my new big boy toy that I enjoy showing off.

Pros: Very easy to setup and get going right away. It's cool that I can see all my pic's from my phone on my screen

Cons: Be careful when loading new firmware to it cause mine just locked up during the process, but Crutchfield has already send me a new one. Waze should be displayed correctly on the screen. The unit works as described, and is exactly what I wanted. The integration of my iphone into a device that could display gps, make and receive calls, charge my phone, and play music effortlessly is what you get for ~$200 dollars. I live in california and drive a convertible -I say this because with the top down, I am still able to see the screen (everyday is a sunny day in L.A. (almost everyday)) - it is bright enough with settings adjusted. Sound quality was an instant upgrade from the stock deck through factory speakers. I have not encountered any software related locks or freezes. CarMediaPlayer app available through itunes is far superior to the default ipod control and makes switching between your music a breeze. Waze and MotionX GPS Drive work flawlessly on this unit, as does Pandora. I do not use cps or dads so I wanted a unit that did not bother with or charge me for the hardware. AppRadio to the rescue. For $200 this unit was/is absolutely perfect for me, oh yeah it connects to ipad 2 too!

Pros: everything in your iPhone that you love while driving piped through you speakers and on a larger screen double tapping "home button" on unit brings up playback controls on screen Price No CDS or DVDS Constantly growing collection of compatible apps

Cons: Not really a con but Pioneer should make it compatible for Android users to enjoy this product also. Its great! I would like the ability to swivel the screen. User experience is not entirely 'Apple-esque' but close enough that I will not deduct a star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I reviewed it fairly high due to the amount of negative comments I have read prior to purchasing it. The main thing people need to keep in mind is that this works off your iPhone so some of the interface issues could be due to the age or IOS that the phone is operating on. I know my phone can get finicky from time to time from switching apps that require a lot of system to use such as navigation apps. However from some of the reviews I read that said it doesn't hardly work at all I haven't run into that. I would recommend this to anyone that wants an iPhone interface that is very easy to use. You get what you pay for and for the App Radio to be marketed as a affordable double din screen solution you honestly have to expect to get what you do for the price. I installed this in a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD with Onstar it turned out very clean and fit well I was able to keep the metal bracket in place and only needed to trim some of the plastic in front of the frame and route the wires behind the bracket on both sides for the unit to fit.

Pros: This is a very inexpensivly priced product from a well know company. The appearance of the unit is very nice and its fairly easy to use. Being able to expand based off a app store gives this tons of potential.

Cons: The screen quality isn't as good as others its slightly pixelated. Some options allow you to touch anywhere of the screen and some only let you touch arrows to slew up and down vs just touching the selection. Would be nice if it displayed the entire alert or text. It would be nice to be able to switch back and forth between apps easier.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First impression - great, simple and obvious idea. Execution - lacking. Crutchfield support was as expected fantastic. The radio, on the other hand, was not. Installed in a Nissan xTerra, and included a backup camera. Shift into reverse before the radio finishes it's wakeup cycle and the unit stays displaying the backup camera until the car is restarted. Start the iPod playback and Pandora randomly jumps in and starts playing. No gain adjustment on the mic; several friends said I was far, far away and difficult to hear. Many features required hands on both the touch screen and the iPhone to operate - not a great idea when attempting to drive as well. Slow to upload address book on phone. Mic and SIRI do not get along well at all. Overall interface far from intuitive. No display of time on screen. No way to shut off the radio without simply turning the volume to zero. Grainy display, not as bright as most. No option to keep the display alive when using navigation software, if the unit is set to "sleep" the display after 10 or 20 seconds, it's going there regardless of what you are using the AppRadio for.

Pros: Sound quality. Firmware updates possible and available at the Pioneer site. Good equalizer interface.

Cons: Buggy. Delays between button push and something happening. Bluetooth phone answer button and hang up button are in the same place, they just change color - easy to inadvertently hang up before saying a word resulting in a missed call. No bluetooth audio streaming. Poor mic for hands-free. Very limited application availability. No way to report bugs to Pioneer.

    not great

Normal guy from Military on 7/13/2012

Not a great product. Would have used crutchfield's return policy, but put this in a freshly restored 1970 Mach 1 Mustang and by the time I checked out the radio, a few months passed. Warning screens. Talk about annoying! Slow to respond warning screens at that. Tried it with properly wired emerg brake - would end up having to pull over to reset system not and then. This one has two separate warnings back-to-back and its hit or miss. **sounds simple** but no, it prevents easy quick simple access to the radio. I would be happy if it at least started making music - but it requires attention if you want tunes. Big deal? No. annoying!!! Sounds good. I did ok with pioneer app to control phone. But it doesn't always sync like its supposed to. Some times it requires system reset/shutdown. ***but there is no off switch** so you have to wait to shut car off. Many aps DO NOT display on receiver. Weird. It should at least be a repeater like the kenwood I have in my truck. Maybe appradio TWO is better?? I just want a simple navigation receiver that works well with my iphone. I really am easy to please - this is not it. I'm selling this one on craigslist and upgrading. No slam on crutchfield - been a loyal customer for years.

Pros: great idea. it does look good!

Cons: poor execution by pioneer. difficult for quick easy use. display is good - but not bright.

Bought this radio about a month ago. Been incredibly happy with it. The build quality is top Knoch, and the radio works as advertised. Now, you have to understand what you are buying. This is a radio with an iPhone mirroring input, and custom controls for a handful of applications. If something doesn't work right, nine times out of ten, it is the app maker's fault. Looking at you CarMediaPlayer and your not wanting to load.

Pros: Very smooth in app mode, fantastic sound quality from the pre-out, apps are awesome. Radio is well designed. Overall machine is very responsive.

Cons: Glitches. This thing is not perfect. Sometimes my parking brake refuses to acknowledge. Sometimes pandora goes black screen on me. Sometimes apps will shrink to a windowed view on the screen. All minor stuff you can ignore. Oh and some people don't like that it has to ask you to turn on the app when you plug it in, but that's an apple problem. Pioneer can't control that.

    System Overview

The Pioneer AppRadio: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) is an innovative car audio system with a 6.1" capacitive touchscreen display that when used along with the unit's Advanced App Mode, facilitates the use of your connected iPhone 4/4S's applications from Pioneer and other providers in the vehicle. In addition to the basic functions, such as AM/FM radio and Bluetooth hands-free phoning, when an iPhone 4/4S is connected you'll have full access to your music, photos, videos, calendars, and select iTunes apps.

Apple iPhone 4/4S Compatible: The Pioneer AppRadio is designed specifically for the Apple iPhone 4/4S and offers audio playback functions for other select iPod/iPhone models. It is not compatible with the iPhone 5 or above. You cannot connect other USB devices, digital audio players, or smartphones. This unit does not contain a CD player, nor does it have CD-changer port.

AppRadio App (Ver. 1.2.1): The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) requires that you download the latest AppRadio app from the iTunes app store onto your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s.

    Display Features

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Note: This receiver does not include a mounting sleeve. This is not an issue for most vehicles, however, there are some vehicles that require the use of a mounting sleeve when installing a 2-DIN receiver. No accessory mounting sleeve is available for this receiver.

6.1" Capacitive Touchscreen Display: The front of the unit features a clean and simple aesthetic look with only three physical buttons (a home button, a volume up button and a volume down button) combined with a high-resolution WVGA (800 x 480) 6.1" capacitive touchscreen display. This capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays. Touchscreen control is used for all functions including the app interface, iPod control/playback, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth hands-free calling features.

Note: All of the AppRadio's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation to promote a safe driving experience.

Multi-Language Text: The Pioneer AppRadio offers 20 display languages - including English, French, and Spanish.

Display Adjustments: You can adjust the touchscreen display's Dimmer (on/off), Brightness (1-5), and Black Level (1-5).

Demonstration Images: If you do not operate the unit for 30 seconds, demonstration images are displayed. You can turn this function Off.

Screen Off: You can set the time (Off, 10 sec, or 20 sec.) when the screen is blacked out.

Quick Start Mode: The AppRadio features a Quick Start Mode that puts the AppRadio into a reduced power mode for five minutes when the vehicle ignition is switched to Off. While in Quick Start Mode, if you turn the ignition switch On, the AppRadio will immediately start up. If the unit is in Quick Start Mode and the ignition is not switched to On within five minutes, the AppRadio automatically turns itself off.

Note: The unit has a boot-up time of approximately 30 seconds when the unit is powered up (from the Off position). Once the unit is booted-up, you must then launch your iPhone 4/4S's AppRadio app (which takes approximately another 10 seconds).

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged.

Rear View Camera: The Pioneer AppRadio (SPH-DA02) is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera In jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC4, sold separately) is installed on your vehicle. When your vehicle's shift lever is in the reverse position, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the pink wire in the supplied harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). You can switch between a Normal or Mirror image.

Installation Angle: For optimum playback performance, the unit should be installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.
