Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had this unit professionaly installed, no instructions in spanish; so installer did not know to hit mode button not a big deal. The big problem with this unit is, what a pain it is to get your free 12mil POI upgrade. You have to buy an SDcard, send an email to get password, wait a couple of days for password, get info off head unit, enter info, load downloaded files from computer than load on head unit. And the instuctions for this are pretty complicated and extremly time consumming, I could keep goining on about this........Next cant enter POI's when moving. A $100 garmin much better. The Navagation works really well on the plus side. For the price Pioneer should have the 12mil POI's included, thats my biggest grip

Pros: Nav user friendly and works well

Cons: Pioneer makes u work pretty hard for the 12mil POI's. would give 5stars if cheeper and POI's were loaded and could be entered when moving.

Do not buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install. Everything about it seems 1980's after seeing a Garmin my friend has. It couldn't even recognize my street or address. It couldn't even tell me the McDonald's a mile from me. Minimal options. Took a while to figure out and setup too. It is neat that it integrates with my reciever but that's about it. The instructions are DVD format too. This means my wife couldn't read up and mess with it while we we're driving. Other than this I love pioneer

Pros: Easy install

Cons: Save your money Too expensive for what it is. Already a year out of date Lack of features Buy a map

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed the AVH P3200BT and U220 nav to my Toyota SUV. The P3200BT works great (I wish the unit had BT voice activation). The AVIC-U220 installed very easily. You do need a computer to register and receive the updates, however the software only runs on a 32bit system. I only have 64bit systems in my home so this was a bit disappointing. Pioneers made a note of this on their web page. After getting the software installed on to an older computer I received the free 12 million point POI database when you registration. Pioneer does ask for a credit card even though there will be no charge. I really don't like giving out credit card information into a database especially if it's not needed. I received the password information the next day. To sum it all up as with anything there is a learning curve when introduced to new or different electronics. The Pioneer AVIC-U220 is a nice unit and would recommend this product.

Pros: Easy installation, updates are easily done.

Cons: Software only runs on 32bot computer.

Fantastic Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently had the Avic-U220 professionally installed in my car. The GPS is far superior than my portable Navigon unit. I highly recommend taking advantage of the free POI download that is offered. It was a snap to download and has many more POI categories to choose from. It's taking me some time to get used to having to apply the parking brake to enter address destinations, but that is just because I've relied on the portable units for so long. The display is excellent (even with polarized sunglasses) and the narrated directions from the woman's voice is crystal clear (I named mine Meryl after Meryl Streep!). You can be listening to your iPod one minute and the woman will come on over the speakers and when she's finished the music picks up from where it left off. I own a 2008 Ford Taurus and had to install mine under the glove box on the side wall of the passenger side. Chances are, your probably not going to have enough room to install it behind the radio. I am extremely satisified with this product and hope to get a lot of use from it for many years to come. Pioneer makes superior products!

Does the job

Pjo from Denver. Co on 5/31/2011

While not as powerful as my Garmin Nuvi and missing traffic updates, unit funcitons well and is much cleaner than having some thing stuck to my dashboard. Also integrates nicely with AVH head unit and is accurate to 1 m (as far as I can tell). And the chick's voice (not Samantha) is pleasant!

This worked out great for me I installed it in a 2010 Jeep Patriot. The one thing they need to do is lengthen the Antenna cable. Mine worked but was too short I happen to snap it while doing some modifications to the install. I replaced the antenna with a PIONEER GPS ANTENNA CXC8574

Big Let Down

VC from Harrisburg, PA on 12/18/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Disappointing GPS. Gave up my Magellan for this? Doesn't recalculate route after missing destinantion. Doesn't end routing program after reaching destination. POI download was successful, however, there doesn't seem to be local "stuff", especially in restaurants, just lots of national chains. I love my receiver (AVH-4200DVD). Dislike navigation.

Wouldn't buy again

Ron from Kansas City, MO on 11/8/2010

Just had an AVH P3200BT and U220 nav added to my car. The 3200 is great....the U220 is disappointing. Biggest problem is that it locks out the ability to enter an address if you are moving over 15 mph. Not fun stopping on the interstate and trying to enter an address while 18 wheelers are about to run you over. Why they did this is a mystery. You can lookup Points of Interest while driving and use all of the other features on the 3200 while driving, but you CANNOT enter an address. Also, Pioneer says you get a free 12 million point POI database when you register. What they don't tell you is they want your credit card (even though they say they are not going to use it) and after giving them the data, you sit and wait and wait and wait for the passwords that supposedly will get the POI database for you. I had to wait a week. Since the 220 is installed under the dash out of sight, you have to partially deinstall your car to get the SD chip with the data into the U220. Would not buy again.

Add-on GPS

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had the U220 installed for about 2 weeks. I used it for a long trip already and it was flawless. I give the unit extra credit for navigating in the DC area where many of the roads are new or have been redirected. Voice prompts are clear although in several cases it did not state the street name. The install and set up were easy and the interface with my Pioneer AVH-P5200BT is seemless with a 1 touch transistion between head unit and navigation screen. The interface is much faster than my previous system. Pioneer offers a free POI upgrade. This is ok but I'd be more interested in how to keep the maps updated. Nothing is mentioned about how that will work. I definitely recommend this purchase. Pros: familiar interface; intuitive easy install fast operating system/processor response accurate directions (even in VA/DC area) direct PC interface for upgrades and application installs Cons: some street names are sometimes not stated with turn instructions (minor) POI update process complex and convoluted

Flash Memory Navigation: The AVIC-U220 offers a comprehensive map database from Tele Atlas stored on its built-in 2GB flash-memory which covers the entire United States, Canada, Alaska, and Hawaii; enabling you to route to millions of destinations.

GPS Technology: The unit has a 20-channel GPS receiver with a magnetic antenna included. The AVIC-U220 accurately measures your current location by the Global Positioning System, a network of satellites orbiting the earth to give you time and position information. The accuracy of the GPS information depends upon how good the reception is.

Note: The GPS antenna can be installed outside our inside the vehicle. The antenna measures 1.3125" (w) x 0.5625" x 1.4375" (d); with a 12' cable.

2D/3D Map: The Pioneer AVIC-U220 allows you to view a detailed city map on its integrated monitor in 2D or 3D. You can choose to orient the map in one of two ways; show North at the top of the screen, or show the direction in which you are heading at the top. You can also select between brightness modes - Day (for a bright background), Night (for a black background) or Auto (to automatically switch between the two). Most of the information provided by the navigation system can be seen on the onscreen map. You can change the map scale between 25 yards and 1,000 miles (25 meters and 2,000 kilometers).

Note: The unit's 3D map is fixed in the direction you are heading at the top of the screen.

Voice Guidance: In addition to graphical on-screen directions and maps, the AVIC-U220 provides voice guidance and turn-by-turn directions. You can choose a male or female voice in English, French, or Spanish.

Lane Guidance: In certain locations of a freeway, lane information is available, indicating the recommended lane to be in to easily maneuver the next instruction.

Destination Search: The Pioneer AVIC-U220's built-in navigation system allows you to search for your destination by Home (saved home address), Address (City/Street/House #), POI (points-of-interest), Favorites (up to 400 locations), Recent History (up to 100 locations), and Coordinates (latitude/longitude). You can also select a point on the map to be your destination by simply touching the screen.

POIs: The Pioneer AVIC-U220 features only 250,000 points-of-interest. You can obtain 12 million POIs by registering the unit on Pioneer's website. You will need an SD-memory card (2-4GB) to download the POIs from your computer. The SD card will need to remain in the AVIC-U220 to use the updated 12 million point-of-interest.

Note: Visit for more information.

Parking Brake Safety: The parking brake must be engaged to operate all, but some of the simplest navigation functions.  Destination history and some local POI functions are still available without the parking brake.

Route Calculation: The AVIC-U220 calculates the route based on your preferences. You can have the navigation system calculate your route based on the following selections.

  • Route Method: You can choose from different route types (Fast, Shortest, or Major).
  • Road Types: To let the route fit your needs, you can also set which road types (Ferry, Freeway, Toll Road) are to be considered for or to be excluded from the route if possible.
  • Time Restrictions: This setting control whether streets or bridges that have traffic restrictions during a certain time should be taken into account.

Itinerary: The Itinerary is a detailed list of the route events or driving instructions.

Waypoints: During an  active route, you can insert additional  waypoints (intermediate destinations) preceding the destination. You can insert up to 5 waypoints. Every time a new point is added, the route is recalculated automatically and you can start navigating right away.

Eco-Driving Function: This  navigation system is equipped with an Eco-driving function that can be used to estimate whether you are driving in an environmentally friendly way.

  • Echo Graph: This function estimates approximate fuel mileage based on your driving, compares that with your average fuel mileage in the past, and displays the results in a graph. The ECO Graph feature provides a view in addition to 2D and 3D, which divides the map view screen with a new graph to provide drivers with a visual representation of their environmental impact.
  • Gas Mileage: You can estimate the fuel cost to your destination by entering in approximate fuel price per gallon.
  • Eco Drive Level Guidance: This navigation is equipped with the Eco Drive Level function that estimates how well you have driven in an environmentally friendly way based on your Eco Score. When a route is set, the unit will calculate a Drive Score based on driving efficiency which factors abrupt stops and accelerations and idle time. Your Eco Score is calculated from the following:
    • Speed: indicates the speed detected (this indication may be different from actual speed of vehicle)
    • Acceleration/Deceleration: indicates acceleration or deceleration velocity of your vehicle
    • Distance: indicates driving distance
    • Incline: indicates the degree of slope of the street that you are currently on
  • Sudden Start Alert: If the speed of the vehicle exceeds 25.5 mph within 5 seconds from the time it is started, a message appears and a warning sound beeps.

Note: The fuel mileage calculated is based on a theoretical value determined from vehicle speed and position information from the navigation system. The fuel mileage displayed is only a reference value, and does not guarantee the mileage displayed can be obtained.

Travel History: The Track Logger feature enables you to record your driving (travel) history to the unit's built-in flash memory or an inserted SD card.

Route Simulation: A simulation drives you through the route, following the driving instructions.

Auto Reroute: If you deviate from the set route, the system will recalculate the route from that point so that you remain on track to your destination.

AVIC Feeds: Through Pioneer's proprietary AVIC Feeds PC software, the unit can estimate the fuel cost of trip routes through detailed Drive Reports. Through a proprietary fuel consumption algorithm, AVIC Feeds can also log and archive driving data and analyze driving habits to generate various reports with suggestions to improve fuel efficiency. You can also create custom Points of Interest (POIs) by using the AVIC Feeds utility program. Once created, you can store the POI on an external storage device, such as an SD card, and upload the information to the unit. In addition, using the AVIC Feeds software and an SD card, users can also download the Clock and Photo View applications. These applications give you access to five different clock views and a slideshow of personal photos, complete with transition effects for use as alternative screensavers to the map view. The Pioneer AVIC Feeds PC software is available on the Pioneer website (

Map Updates: The Pioneer AVIC-U220's navigation module detaches from its base so you can take it with you inside the house to connect to your PC for Map updates, Software upgrades, and AVIC Feeds. The unit features a mini-USB type-B port and comes with a USB cable to connect to your PC. The unit also features an SD-card slot to download Map updates, Software upgrades, and AVIC Feeds from Pioneer's website.
