Our take on the Pioneer FH-X500UI

Don't go small when you put a new receiver in your dash — fill up that 4" tall dash opening with Pioneer's FH-X500UI CD receiver. This sharp-looking receiver stretches out with a multi-color, dual-zone display that lets you choose from thousands of colors — you can even set up one color for the display and another for the buttons. For some extra visual excitement, MIXTRAX syncs the audio from many of your sources, adding transitions between songs along with a light show that pulses and changes color with the beat of the music — like cruising down the road with your own personal DJ on board.

Customize the display and button colors to match your car.

Play your music

Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input, and you'll be able to control your music files and playlists. If you're a Pandora® fan, you'll have control of your favorite stations from the receiver when your iPhone's connected. You can also use the USB input to tap into the music files stored on many Android devices, while the front aux input handles just about any other audio source. If you're into your CD collection, you'll enjoy stellar playback of your store-bought and home-burned discs.

You shape the sound

Pioneer's potent MOSFET amplifier delivers plenty of power, and the 5-band EQ lets you tweak the sound as much as you want. You can also switch quickly between seven preset equalizer curves to get the sound you're looking for during your drive. The two pairs of preamp outputs make it easier to add external amplifiers or a powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

Installation Note:  Pioneer doesn't include a DIN sleeve with this receiver, as it's only needed for a small number of installations. We'll let you know on the way to the cart if you need to purchase a sleeve (item 130ADTV133) for your vehicle.

Terrific stereo for a great price. Easy install with included hardware. A bit complicated to learn the menus and get everything programmed and set up, but once done it sounds great. Cool lighting too with tons of color choices. Installed in a Ford Excursion.

Pros: Great Pioneer quality. Excellent sound and lots of features. Terrific price.

Cons: Takes a while to figure out the menus. A little more complicated than it needs to be. Certain lighting colors are way too bright at night.

    1999 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this Pioneer receiver to replace the double-din factory one in my 99 Altima. Beforehand I had replace the factory speakers with some Pioneer 6.5's all around, but with the factory head unit. The sound was noticeably better, but when I installed this receiver my goodness... the power! Even without putting the loudness setting on it sounds so much better. Clarity improved greatly and it was fairly easy to install, just a matter of soldering the harness adapter together and plugging it in. Also I've seen reviews saying its hard to use the controls while driving, I have zero problems switching stations/source or controlling the volume while driving. It is a little more sensitive than a factory radio but not anything crazy. Aux input works great too.

Pros: Easy to use, good power output, aux input.

Cons: Sunlight glare can make the display hard to read.

very nice, definitely would recommend. looks a little out of place in my older subaru because the radio looks so modern and everything else in the car is basic factory controls. there are many display color options - all look bright and sexy at night.

Pros: usb and aux, can switch songs by pressing the arrow instead of controlling it on the phone, light options, many different settings for bass, etc

I had to return this product because it didn't mesh well with my 350z bose amp. But it's definitely a quality product. The flashing lights are a little cheesy since I'm not in my teens anymore but thankfully you can shut the feature off. Overall for $120 you're not going to find a better value. It's a great unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good value, if it worked, bought because I did not need anything fancy and the reviews were majority good. Unfortunately the unit was toast right out of the box. Called Crutchfield and they promptly fixed the issue. I went ahead and upgraded to the kenwood dpx300u and just finished the install and it works great. Can't reccomend this unit as it did not work from the get go, but Crutchfield's customer service is top notch and they corrected the issue promptly and without question.

I think this product is a well made and cool looking product I would highly advise this as a head unit!

Pros: The illumination is sweet and I love the display that it has!

Cons: The first one that I ordered stopped working after about a week when the led display stopped showing anything. However Crutchfield said that that happens very rarely and they replaced it with absolutely not charge to me.

    A grade for this price!

TroyW from Ellijay, GA on 7/22/2014

    2011 Scion xB
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Having hated the "premium" audio Scion put in the car (Alpine), I was all too glad to replace it. I didn't need a ton of features, just good, solid sound and power. I definitely got that with this Pioneer! The install was easy, thanks to Crutchfield, and the improvement in sound was hilariously obvious. The stock audio unit had a 65 dB signal to distorted and muddy. The Pioneer has a MUCH higher StNR, and it's so much clearer, punchier, and doesn't give me a headache. The features are powerful, and this unit throws out a lot of bass, has very good EQ selections and 2 custom options...5 bad EQ is pretty good. I like the options for lighting, and it has a cool look. For the price here, I say it's a real bargain, and I give it a solid A grade for its price range.

Pros: Very good sound, cool look, nice EQ options, I think it's easy to use.

Cons: Haven't found one yet. I don't miss the steering controls much, so I'm not even going to comment on that.

    loving it!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a noce radio that installed easy with the other stuff Crutchfield sent with it. The only issue was that I have a 2003 Honda Element and it has a factory installed amp that made the radio not give any sound. So I had to bypass it. I just cut the wires going into the amp and connected the speakers directly to the wires going to the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this receiver do my wife's 2007 suburban. After hours of researching ans reading reviews, I decided on this one as it seemed to be the best bang for my buck. Crutchfield includes everything for a seamless install, one of the reasons I buy from them. It took me about 30 minutes start to finish to install it. I fired it up for a test listen and was blown away! Very clear, gobs of power, and easy to navigate menu make this Pioneer a winner. I would definitely recommend!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really love this stereo! I literally use of its features. I keep a CD in the player just in case my iPod bores me or my Phone has a bad signal. Either way I'm covered! AUX Port - Great for for my Cell Phone. I use Pandora a lot, so I just jack in and let it play. Its great also if I have a friend who wants to use it too. USB Port - Love using my iPod Classic with this. It works seamlessly with both the Remote and the Stereo's controls. Its also great for charging USB powered devices. FM/AM Radio - The digital tuner is dynamite! It's better than the old tuner I had. I think I can save about 18 FM stations. Sounds really clear! I don't use the AM tuner at all. Overall the radio is a huge upgrade over my old stereo. Sometimes the controls are a bit confusing, but if you bare with it, its manageable. I love the colors, I leave it on Red (Its the dimmest color). The biggest thing I noticed is that its louder than my old radio, which is great. And the BASS! I did not expect that! I boosted the BASS all the up and played a BASSY song. My poor speakers could not handle it. With a little tuning, it really thumps nicely! Give this stereo a shot! I love it! It's blast being stuck in traffic now, I'm too busy jamming to worry about not moving!

Pros: Looks, Colors, BASS Reproduction, Color Customization, USB Port, and Remote control.

Cons: Navigating menus is a little tedious. But thats about it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is very decent for the price. It sounds very good and fit my girlfriends 1999 civic almost perfectly. Overall I am very pleased with this head unit and could not expect much more for the money. I would have preferred a Kenwood head unit over pioneer for about the same money.

Pros: Inexpensive, good sound quality, cool color selection, looks great.

Cons: Buttons feel kind of cheap and clicky, The unit itself is very light which makes me a little skeptical about build quality. The screws that came with this unit did not work for my vehicle. The unit seems to be overly complicated for what it is. Could be a lot more simple and direct, the text display is a little dim and hard to read in the daytime on certain colors.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product. The website made it easy to find out which stereo would fit in my vehicle and the instructions that were sent via email were very easy to follow. I did have to look on youtube on how to remove my particular dash panel but found it quickly.

Pros: Good sound and easy install myself. Crutchfield does a good job sending necessary hardware which were included as part of the purchase, would have cost me more to buy it locally!! And free shipping!! Great deal. I probably saved $150 buying through them and installing it myself.

Cons: Lots of features to figure out how to use. Takes some time reading the manual and sitting in front of the stereo actually going through them to figure it out. Still working on that part.

    Overall very good!

    2009 Kia Sedona
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed a new radio for my Kia, Sedona. I did not want to spend a lot of money as I am older and can't hear the sounds as well as I did when younger. This radio fits the bill, easy to install and fits fine in the dash. I spent 45 years in electronics so it was easy connect the wires. When installing be sure to connect up the antenna wire as I did not know that it was to turn on the amplifier for the antenna and had to remove the radio to connect this wire. It takes a little while to get a costumed to operating and maneuvering in the menus. I have tried to lower the brightness of the lights in it but I can not get it very low, too bright for those dark country roads and the dimmer doesn't make that much difference. The remote works great and is easy to adjust the audio sounds.

Pros: Good value, easy to install.

Cons: Bright lights and navigating the controls.

It's probably the best 2 Din for the money. However I wish I had spent an extra $40 for the Sony WX-GT90BT. The five band EQ has more bands than most, but the Sony has 7 bands. Although I have not heard one.

Pros: Affordable and easy to use.

Cons: It needs a better EQ and would nice to have the Boss wattage. I am cheap and picky about my sound mix.

This is an excellent double din option. It fit my Santa Fe perfectly. IMO, double dins look much better on mini vans and SUVs than a single Din would. The mixtrax function was not a factor when I ordered it. However, once I tried it, I love it and I get to listen to a random mix of songs spanning 4 GB- awesome!

This is a great unit! I found it very easy to install myself. I have the unit in my Pontiac Vibe with the stock speakers. I am happy with the sound now but I ordered a pair of Pioneer speakers just to see the difference. I plan to get a component set for the front also when I can. Nice lights, Too!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a replacement for the original cassette/radio in my 2000 Honda Crv. Wanted a USB/ auxiliary jack with some pizzazz and a relatively brand name. This fit the bill to a "t". Installation was fairly standard no problem with harness, the Metra case, not so much, more on that in separate review. Sound quality is excellent, I listen to mostly hard rock/metal and the sound with original car speakers is very good, plan on getting 4 new speakers eventually and I'm sure the sound quality will be even better. The lighting display is very bright, I keep it on the default which cycles through all of the colors, very pretty lol. I think the build quality could be a little better, the volume knob which is very prominent seems to me to be kind of flimsy, as does the USB cover. Hasn't broken yet, but, I could see it happening. All in all very satisfied with the unit.

Pros: Sound quality Ease of use Color choices for the display

    Cons: Build quality

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this while looking at a similar model that had bluetooth. I messed up (my fault) and ordered this one, without bluetooth. I didn't realize I had ordered the wrong one until after I had it installed. For the 1 week that I had it in my car, I was definitely not blown away. I'm running high end Rockford Fosgate speakers in all 4 doors with an amp and 2 12"s in the back. The subs rock, but the Rockford Fosgate's simply didn't come to life. I tried playing with the EQ on the Pioneer to bring more highs and mids out of the door speakers. The 5 EQ options are factory set - as in you cannot adjust the lows, mids, and highs to your preference. I couldn't find a setting that met my expectations/preference. I've had awesome car stereo systems in previous vehicles, and this deck, in short, kind of disappointed. If you want a cheap upgrade from your factory stereo, this is a killer unit. But if you're a serious car stereo guru then hold out and spend the extra cash, this isn't gonna do it for you. Crutchfield was awesome on their end. I called them and told them I wasn't satisfied with the unit, they let me pick a different one out and only charged me the difference between the 2 units. Can't ask for much more than that. 12/10 customer service.

Pros: Light options are kinda cool. Crutchfield customer service is awesome.

Cons: Factory EQ settings/options kinda suck, you can't customize your own lows, mids, and highs. You gotta spend more money if you really want a better sounding head unit. I've always owned Alpine's, this was my first Pioneer. I'm gonna stick with Alpine from now on.

Can find no reason not to give 5 stars. Works as advertised. Colors are cool. Customization and install was easy. OE stereo on my 06 f-150 has 2 plugs, this stereo only has one. A quick call from the help desk telling me not to worry about the "extra"plug solved any confusion. NOTE: I did not need the antennae extension, and the connectors the sell u are only good for wire to wire, not for joining 3 wires together. Quick connects that snap together w/o any splicing work better, and are cheaper at the parts stores. Also I found that on my truck, the spacers on the installation bracket were too big. Once I removed them, the fit and finish look factory.

Great sounding, easy installation. Absolutely horrible. This quite possibly could be the best worst product I have ever owned. I don't even know how to write a review like this. This rates 99 "atta boys" and 1 "aw crap" but the flaw ruins the stereo for me.

Pros: Every thing you would like in a stereo at a great price.

Cons: The main knob is used to control everything. It is near impossible to adjust the volume while you are driving. You reach up to change it and press ever so slightly on the knob and you are 8 menus deep into the programing. I want to hit it with a hammer. Hard. Often. And with great malice. A car stereo should not cause this sort of frustration in your life. Pioneer spent so much time making it look pretty that they ran out of time to make it functional.

Cons: Every time I plug in my phone it automatically starts with song in alphabetical order, even when I have a song playing. You can change it from the phone but it is a minor step that would be better if fixed.

I replaced the stock stereo in my 2003 Mustang GT with Mach 460 with this Pioneer and it fits in well with the other dash lights. Some people on here complain about the lights being bright, but they may not have realized that you can just set the color to stay a darker shade so it's not so distracting. In Mixtrax mode, however, it can be set up to strobe through the rainbow and auto DJ parts of songs or full tracks. In that mode, it is very bright and could be distracting for some drivers. Very slick looking overall and works well with my stereo. The adapter kit only comes with 2 plugs and the stock radio has 3... I'm not sure what the 3rd plug was for but I just taped it off and the stereo works great with just the two plugs. Great stereo for the price.

    Pros: Looks, price, loudness

Cons: Bright lights in Mixtrax mode

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Factory radio in 2004 Matrix was giving up the ghost. This double-din had all the basics I needed to upgrade while needing a replacement radio. Went from 3 band to 5 band EQ, 3 level loudness control (none in factory unit), MP3 and tablet inputs on the front. Installation was a snap. The wiring harness/adapter was color coded perfectly. Even made the Polk Audio db651s door speakers (4) installed in 2007 sound that much better. Well worth the cost, which really wasn't that bad.

Pros: Clean sound, very tunable to whatever speakers you may have, and plenty of power (for a 65 year old into Jazz, even with my HK mid bass and JBL/Dual powered Sub). Love the pause function for CD's, and the mute on the remote. Being able to set color of display and keys to whatever you want to match or accent your dash is rather clever.

Cons: None that I can see, or hear ! ! !

    2001 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in '01 Mustang convertible originally equipped with Mach 460, which is a miserable system to modify. The original head unit sounded pretty good, but didn't have any provision for an iPod. I also wanted a full-time clock display, which for some reason seems to be rare. The Pioneer slides right in, making up the harness wasn't a big deal, and Crutchfield includes all the parts. My research told me that I need to set the high-pass filter as high as possible to protect the mid-tweeters, and set the low-pass to keep highs out of the subs. It'd be nice if Crutchfield indicated this on the instructions, but it's not hard to find. I ended up with the HPF at 200 hz with 12 db/octave roll off, as high as the hpf on this unit will go. I set the subwoofer low pass at 125, gain at zero, 12 db/octave, but I'm still fiddling with that, some programs still distort due to too much low-mid to the subs. I may drop the low pass down to 100 or lower. The sound is great; much better than OEM, even with the OEM amps and speakers. I may at some point replace the OEM speakers and re-wire, but that's another exercise. The head unit does require a lot of menu-diving to make changes, the panel controls are minimal, it's really a set-and-forget deal. The display brightness can be annoying; pick the right colors! And I can't imagine anyone older than 6 being the least bit enchanted by "Mixtrax", a totally worthless "feature".

Pros: easy install, good sound, full-time clock display, works well with Mach 460, with some fiddling. Great instructions. Very flexible in outputs, control options. Great deal at the price. Keeping it for sure.

Cons: Mixtrax is worthless, not the least bit interesting or useful to an adult. Display dimmer that works would be nice. Bright light strips along edges of unit are annoying; who thinks up these things? Takes a while to figure out the menus. Crutchfield should provide some guidance on HPF/LPF settings for Mach systems (although, I've now done that...)

Typical of Pioneer's HUs, the navigation through menus was intuitive and I never had to refer to the manual either for install or configuration. She picked it up immediately as well. At this price point, it's hard to argue this is not a great bang for the buck solution.

I had a factory Infinity deck going out in my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon and was looking for an inexpensive replacement without all the fancy stuff. Just a double din to fit where the stock unit was. The Pioneer fit the bill nicely and I was able to custom match the display color to my reddish/orange interior lighting so it really looks factory. Was kind of scared to do the install but with the instructions provided by Crutchfield, it was very smooth. No problems whatsoever. Very happy with the product and service I received.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall nice unit, but seems designed for children. Too many extraneous lights (I covered vertical perimeter lights that serve no function with electrical tape). As others commented, there needs to be a functional dimmer. Dimmer ON / OFF indicates that the dimmer is ON or OFF, but there is no perceptable difference in light level. The very prominent MIX button is the most useless thing I've ever seen (unless you're a stoned teenager that likes to look at flashing lights). Menu navigation takes some practice, but no worse than other modern units. Overall I like this unit, but I would prefer substance over style (which is why I opted out of rating "Coolness Factor" which I consider NA). I'm quite satisfied with sound quality.

Pros: USB (Which is why I chose this model) Double DIN (full size)

Cons: Crazy lights / Mix button? Lack of functional dimmer

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I owned this unit for a very, very short time. It lit up my entire cab at night. If you own an older vehicle with a less than bright dash illumination, this unit will overpower and is not for you. It lists 5 levels of illumination which is non existant and false. Pioneer doesnt even list this as an option for this unit on their web page any longer. I assume it never made it into the production units. Everyone still lists it on their webpage though.

Pros: Great sound, easy to use

Cons: Super bright, will not work with a vehicles auto dim when you turn on the headlights and the built in dim feature is non existent. Also, it has two bars of light, on either side of the unit with will blind you at night and there is no way to turn it down.

This is a very good bang for buck head-unit, especially if you don't need Bluetooth. This was a present for my dad to go in his 02 Buick Century. Sounds good for a budget unit, a little hard to use at first. Love the changeable colors and the plethora of input options for s budget stereo. Like other reviewers have said it is a little bright. And the front bezel feels a bit cheap,

    2004 Chevrolet Colorado
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the value for the price. Sound quality was better than the stock Delco in my 2004 Colorado. Adding the adaptor to keep dash lights and vehicle "dings" working is essential (and affordable here at Crutchfield and elsewhere) AND from what I gather, without that adaptor you will get a service light from the computer in a lot of vehicles these days - if that service light is on, good luck getting inspections. I digress... the ease of use is so-so; adjacent buttons are easily mis-punched while reaching for an intended button, but you get used to it. Coolness Factor: I like the display options but there are way too many decorative lights - it's bright at night if you are suburban or rural and there is no way to control it other than color choice. Over all though, for the price, this is a "GO"!

Pros: Quality seems fine so far. Remote Control is good to have given button/dial locations/sensitivity on the face.

Cons: Adjacent buttons are easily mis-punched. Main volumn dial is too easily pushed while spinning and enters into Menu mode.

Pros: Lots of features, can finally use my Iphone easily in the car. Cool LED display although that would be more fun for someone younger.

Cons: Documentation for DIY installation. Weighs about half as much as my original radio because of all the plastic parts, but that's not unusual these days.

Pioneer, what else to say, they have made quality, affordable audio for decades, cant go wrong. I went with a cheaper priced, different brand, ended up returning and buying from Crutchfield and got a great price on a great stereo, that looks factory, no adapters. install kit was easy to add, stereo works great, the changing color is cool, everyone comments on coolness factor is high. sound is great, i have a simple phone i put my music on, WAV, not MP3, plugs in and sounds great, love it. CD's read artist and songs even on burned copies. which is awesome! no deck before, even a Sony I had didnt do that! You wont be dissappointed.

I liked it for the little time I had it. buttons were big and easy to use. i loved the large text and display. radio reception was real good out where I live, and the thing was easy to set up. mixtrax was pretty useless, if you ask me. would just cut off in the middle of a song and start the next one in the middle. not at all like the house dj's at the clubs I used to work in. reason I sent it back was for the display brightness. even on the dimmest setting, I could easily read in the back seat at night. for me, in my car, it was way too bright. with it centrally located higher up in the dash, It washed out my night vision and became distracting. this was with the buttons set to red, as well. overall, it was a very good unit, and would still be in the car if not for the brightness of it.

Pros: big display big buttons lots of good features

Cons: mixtrax pretty useless too bright

I have always loved Pioneer stereos and there is NO better place to purchase them but Crutchfield!! This unit is a great value. I installed it in my 2006 Kia Sedona van and it was as simple as pie with the installation kit and wiring harness supplied by Crutchfield. Fits nice and looks fabulous! Sound is awesome with lots of audio adjustments to suit your own taste. I like the many choices of light colors also. People who see it are impressed and think I paid alot more than I did for this. lol My ONLY beef is the radio is terrible. It does not pick up even 1/4 of the stations I could with my factory radio, even local ones. I'm not sure if it has to do with the antenna being in the glass on my van or what. But, I didn't buy this to listen to the radio so I'm ok with that.. USB/Aux ports work great and that's what I was buying this for anyway! I would purchase again.

Auto Off Eject: When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer FH-X500UI's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your 30-pin dock connector or Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The FH-X500UI supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the FH-X500UI.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Pioneer's Lightning-to-USB cable (130CDIU52, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the FH-X500UI.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

iPod Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of stored music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit: From the head unit, you can browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, Composer, Podcast, or Audiobook (your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked). Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically. In addition, the head unit offers Link Play, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Play lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random& Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder. The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, and Song/Artist/Album name.
    • iPod: In iPod mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen, while still being able to view song/artist information on the head unit's LCD.
    • App Mode: App mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps from your iPhone (iOS 5.0+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode and App Mode will provide only limited (basic), if any, control over the app. Available controls may include Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track. The App's Name (i.e. "AUPEO!) and song/artist information will be displayed on the head unit's LCD screen (when applicable, depending on app).

iPod Compatibility Chart: The Pioneer FH-X500UI is "Made for iPod/iPhone" compatible and supports the following iPod/iPhone model functions (as of as of 9/19/2013):

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Auxiliary Input: The FH-X500UI is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player.

    AM/FM + Pandora Internet Radio

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Pandora App: The free Pandora App lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer FH-X500UI using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Pioneer iPod connector cable (sold separately) or the connector cable that came with your iPhone. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) with the latest version of the Pandora Radio application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account. The Pioneer FH-X500UI will provide control over the Pandora music service and display Artist/Album/Song information.

    • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).
    • QuickMix: QuickMix allows you to listen to songs played on one or more Pandora stations in your Station List randomly. You will need to edit your QuickMix station selections on the iPhone before connection.
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song/artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.
Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The FH-X500UI is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power specifications for the FH-X500UI are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer FH-X500UI features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Subwoofer Control: When the head unit's preamp output is configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the low pass filter (50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 125 Hz), select the filter slope (-6/-12dB), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Equalizer: The Pioneer FH-X500UI features a Preset & Custom EQ. The built-in equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The two Custom modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80Hz, 250Hz, 800Hz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz) from +/-6dB. Custom 1 can be set separately for each source (except for USB/iPod/Pandora); while Custom 2 and the other 5 presets are shared settings used for all sources.

High-Pass Crossover: When you don't want low-frequency sound to be heard through your front or rear speakers, you can simply active the head unit's HPF (high pass filter). By activating the HPF, only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output from the front or rear speakers. The high pass filter crossover can be set to 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160hz, 200Hz or Off. The slope level of the HPF can also be adjusted to -6dB or 12dB.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Audio Level Settings: The Pioneer FH-X500UI CD receiver offers a variety of audio settings to tailor the bass, treble, and volume level to your preference.

    • Bass Boost The FH-X500UI features a bass boost function which can be used to enhance low-frequency bass sound. The bass boost function can be set between 0-6.
    • Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone/iPad. It is also not supported by USB MTP devices.

    Display Features

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 5 preset colors (White/Red/Amber/Green/Blue), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red/Blue/Green brightness levels), or scan through a variety of colors.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music. You can also choose which area's of the head unit's face illuminates; select Display, Display/Buttons, or Off.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can press the "DISP" button to turn off). When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the "DISP" button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On, you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On/Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer FH-X500UI has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double -DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in  your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The FH-X500UI comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I wouldn't risk it. However you can do one of two things. You can use the line in input or buy a USB flash drive and plug it into the front of the unit. I recommend the USB drive because the signal is all digital and goes through Pioneer' sound processing for incredible digital sound. No offense but the iPhone greatly limits the ability of this receiver so I wouldn't recommend it anyway. Nowadays the Android is the only platform with maximum flexibility and customization.[ ANTHONY R  May 31, 2014 ]

It should be i don't see why not, my suggestion, pay a little more and get the FH-X500BT (this is the bluetooth one with bluetooth calling and audio) . You then can get bluetooth streaming and access everything on you phone. Android and Iphone. both. Its the best solution, since bluetooth is a universal technology among all phones. Also, as far as you phone book, this deck does integrate with both android and iPhones as long as you are connected via bluetooth. That's my suggestion. Oh and the color selection for the face plate is awesome.[ ANIL K  Feb 17, 2014 ]

Hi Kota G. I installed this head unit in a '04 mercury mountaineer and an '06 Ford Focus so I can't speak specifically to your mustang but I am assuming that the installation would be very similar in your '04 'tang. It is a very easy swap. If you don't have panel tools I highly recommend you get a set of the Bolo panel removal tools b/c they will make the job so much easier.[ Stephen  Dec 10, 2013 ]
Kota G, I installed 2 weeks ago but into a Honda Passport for my son. Installation was easy and Crutchfield provided everything I needed. Love the unit and the sound is great. Would Highly recommend both unit and Crutchfield.[ GRACE R  Dec 09, 2013 ]

It should work with any Android unit under the following conditions:The unit's front-panel USB port supports Android OS 4.0+ (Ice Cream Sandwich/Jelly Bean) as a Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) device. It also supports Android OS 2.2+ (Froyo/Gingerbread) as a Mass Storage Class (MSC) device; as of 8/27/2013.
