Our take on the Pioneer ND-BC6

Pioneer's tiny ND-BC6 rear-view camera measures about an inch in all dimensions, so you can mount it unobtrusively on the back of your car. The view, however, is expansive, as the camera supplies a 138-degree horizontal and 114-degree vertical view to the rear of your vehicle. Hook it up to any receiver with a composite video rear-view camera input, and you've added an extra measure of safety to your car, truck, or RV.

Pioneer's tiny ND-BC6 rear-view camera measures about an inch in all dimensions, so you can mount it unobtrusively on the back of your car. Hook it up to any receiver with a composite video rear-view camera input, and you've added an extra measure of safety to your car, truck, or RV.

The adjustable camera bracket adheres to your license plate or any other convenient spot. A small (2" x 1" x 1") power supply module gets connected in with the included 30' of wiring, so virtually any size vehicle can get equipped with a rear view. The camera renders a detailed 330,000 pixel resolution color image, and boasts Lux Automatic Luminance Control for a clear picture in bright or dim conditions.

Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did not like this product to well. The camera makes things appear a lot farther away then they actually are. Which almost caused me to hit something. So now I have to go buy a different camera that actually will give me the correct distance from objects, and spend more money installing and uninstalling. Dont waste you're money.

Pros: None

2012 E-250

KrisS from Colorado on 4/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Given the very limited visibility out the back of my cargo van, this backup camera provided the added safety was looking for. Very happy with the wide and shallow depth of field. Makes it easy to spot the inconsiderate drivers that do not yield to backing vehicles. Since my Pioneer head unit doesn't have grid lines, I set the camera angle to show the bumper at the bottom of the view. Makes it super easy to see how close I am, and to line up with parking lot lines.

Pros: Good, clear picture, even at night.

Cons: No grid lines. As I understand it, grid lines are to be found in a setting on the head unit you are connecting to. Still, not a deal breaker for me.

Not OEM!

Anonymous from Maryland on 4/10/2015

Fisheye will get some getting used to. Resolution was not as high as I expected. Very grainy. Usable, heck is is a backup camera. On my GTI, the license plate lights cause quite a bit of bloom at night reducing the visible range to much closer to the sides than at day. ( mounted center above plate). Parking lot lights cause quite a bit of bloom. Gridlines are provided by the AVIC5100, eventually, if it feels like it, sometimes..... But that's another issue.

Pros: It's what they put in. Good enough I guess.

Cons: Big considering how small a phone camera is. It should be a tiny cylinder. Resolution disappointing. It seems like a lot of money, again considering phone cameras. Others are even more, but do no better as far as I can see.

Mediocre Camera

Dr. Bob from Georgia on 4/9/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

With todays electronics I thought I would get a great camera for the price. Wrong. I wish there had been some picture comparisons on Crutchfield's web site, because I would have definitely spent much more in order to get the quality picture I see in factory installed backup cameras.

Pros: It works, and because it is hard wired it has no static.

Cons: Fish-eye picture, whereas factory cameras give more of a photo/video view. The colors can be off strangely in partial artificial lighting, which can be disconcerting. Even the pixel quality and density seems poor for this camera, but that could be the fault of the Pioneer AVIC-5000NEX receiver screen.

Good tool for backing up in parking lots and driveway. Give a very good 180 degree view. The color for the most part is good but at night color can wash out a bit because of parking lot lights

Pros: Good in parking lots and driveway esp during the day

Cons: Not very good when raining

Great Camera

David from Redding, CA on 12/24/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hooked this up to my Pioneer AVH-X4600BT and it works great. Picture quailty is excellent, even when it is dark. The wide angle takes a little getting used to but is important to actually see more than what is directly behind you. Using your side view mirrors and the camera together is perfect to take everything in. The hardest part about installing was wiring the stereo to the reverse light so it knows when to kick on.

Pros: Good picture quality Plenty of wiring Easy Install

Cons: Instructions are pretty vague but there are plenty of resources online to help.

Great Camera with Grid Line Capability

mitch from Warrenton, VA on 7/20/2014

My primary reason for posting this review is because many of the preceding reviews complain about the lack of grid lines. I installed this on a Pioneer AVIC Z150BH and easily found the setup options to both activate and adjust the grid lines to within an inch of my bumper. The wide angle lens is a little overwhelming at first but then you start to realize how much real estate is covered to pick up pedestrians moving into your path in parking lots. The only challenge to mounting this camera is where and how to attach it which, unless you are going to use a license plate bracket camera, would be true with any good quality camera. I installed this in an older vehicle after becoming spoiled by a newer factory installed system and have been very pleased both from a safety perspective and the convenience of backing into tight parking spaces more easily. The only way I see to improve on this unit is to have it built in and customized to the specific vehicle from the factory.

Pros: Grid Line Capable, Wide Angle Viewing, Abundance of cable, Ease of Use and of Course Safety.

Cons: None for an aftermarket Camera

Pros: very clear

Cons: I wish it had guide lines on the screen

excellent camera

JoeD from Fenwick Island, DE on 5/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent camera when paired with the Pioneer head unit. Image quality is good, even at night.

Pros: Does what it says it would do, and wiring set up is nice and easy to thread thru the headliner and tailgate. Small, easy to mount camera. Put it on the back of my 4Runner to aid in backing up a jetski trailer, and finding the hitch/ receiver point. Image quality, and frame rate are impressive!

Cons: The viewing angle is so wide that images come at you fast! I know that's not much of an option but I wouldn't trust this camera as much as a stock backup camera that was installed, and made, for a car. Viewing lines would be nice as well to know know when you're in the danger zone!

the camera had plenty of cable to run my 2011 Silverado ext cab. only drawback on my truck is I couldn't mount it right underneath the tailgate as it hit when letting it down so had to mount to license plate top. picture is top quality. does as advertised.

Pros: nice night time and daytime picture. plenty of cable included.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Def something I needed for my navigation. I back up into my very narrow driveway a lot; always hit the curb. This helps me avoid it.

Pros: Easy to follow instructions

Cons: Perception of camera is a bit far. Am closer to objects than camera shows; minor issue though.

Rear-View Camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This rear-view camera is pretty nice. It is small and compact, has a pretty good wide view so you know what you're backing up into. Camera is also durable; took it into a car wash and held up well. Has good lighting at night.

Pros: Small and compact. Good lighting at night. Weather resistant.

Cons: Objects seem further away than they are.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second camera I bought, (I have one on another vehicle of mine). I like it a lot, good picture during the day and the night and nice field of viiew. I am sure there are better ones out there, but for the price, this is a great choice.

Pros: Good field of view good display for day and night

Cons: The only things it does not have is the markers/lines that display on the screen that show distance like some of the factory review cameras have.

great clarity

Mike from New Jersey on 7/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a rear view camera for my jeep since I cant see over the rear tire well. I found good reviews on this camera and gave it a shot since it was also waterproof. I like the camera since I can see where Im going now. The only dislike is that the angle is a little too wide for me so the depth perception is off.

Pros: Small Waterproof

Cons: Too wide of an angle Things are a lot closer than they appear

Very happy

cg from Lacey, WA on 6/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can't really compare this to other rear-view cameras as this is the only one I've owned, but it seems to do the job very well. It's very small so can fit lots of places. I needed one that would mount high up on the rear of a van, so the license plate mounted style wouldn't work for me. This was easy to mount, the cable is plenty long to run the length of an extended full size van (Ford), and picture quality seems good. I haven't tried it at night yet so not sure how well it works in the dark. I tow a boat with the van and wanted something that I could use to check the boat while towing, as well as gain another perspective while backing down the launch ramp. Works great.

Pros: Small size, easy to mount.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I thought the picture was very clear even at night. I installed it on my daughters pickup with a switch too, she said that way she could check out the guys behind her at the red lights with out looking in the mirror

Pros: great picture

Cons: objects closer than they appear

Ok, expected better clarity

Bobby from Cary, NC on 4/8/2013

The camera works, no complaints there, but i must echo what others have said about objects being a lot closer than pictured. Also I feel like the overall picture quality is a bit lacking, not what I would have expected from a pioneer product. I have it hooked up to a AVIC-P8400BH for those who are curious.

Pros: very wide angle, easy install.

Cons: clarity, object depth

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent camera with good night time lighting

Pros: Clarity

Cons: No backup markets

Berle from Mississauga Ontario on 3/11/2013

Very good clarity. Only complaint is that objects in the rear view are actually much closer than expected. When I backed into my garage it looked like I had a few feet of room before hitting the wall, when actually I was just inches away.

Pros: Can be purchased fairly inexpensively if you shop around.

Cons: Don't rely on it to back up. It's just a reference of what's around you.

Compatibility: The Pioneer Universal Rear-View Camera (ND-BC6) is designed for use with Pioneer and other manufacturer in-dash AV/Navigation head units that feature an integrated monitor and rear view camera input (composite video).

Waterproof Aluminum Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.

CMOS Image Sensor: The Pioneer Universal Rear-View Camera (ND-BC6) utilizes a 1/3.6" color CMOS image sensor that has approximately 330,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture. A CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor offers improved resolution and eliminates the vertical light "smear" phenomenon that occurs when a camera using a CCD sensor is exposed to a very bright light source or direct sunlight.

Wide Angle Lens: The 138° horizontal and 114° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you.

Automatic Sensitivity Compensation: The camera automatically adjusts to the available light, from 0.9 lux to 100,000 lux. The 0.9 lux rating ensures you'll have visibility at night in low light, while the 100,000 lux rating means the picture won't be washed out in bright sunlight.

Power Supply: The hideaway power supply unit features two Molex plugs. The 3-pin molex plug connects to the camera's attached harness and supplies power and receives signal. The 4-pin molex plug connects to the Power/Ground/Video harness. Its RCA output feeds signal to your monitor while the other two lead provide power and ground. The power lead has an in-line 1 amp fuse.

Mounting: The rear view camera comes supplied with a pre-installed self-adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up and down.

Power Source/Ground System: 14.4 V DC (10.8 V to 15.1 V allowable); Negative type

Max Current Consumption: 75 mA

Output Video: Mirror image for rear view confirmation

Sensor: 1/3.6" color CMOS sensor

Effective Number of Pixels: 330,000

Wide Angle Lens: focal length - F = 1.02mm, F value = 2.15

Angle Of View: 138° horizontal and 114° vertical

Iris System: Electronic Iris

Scanning System: Interlace

Signal-to-Noise Ratio: 38 db or more

Horizontal Resolution: Approximately 350 TV lines

Illumination Range: Approximately 0.9 lux to 100,000 lux

Image Output: NTSC compatible - 1 Vp-p (75-ohm)

Easy-to-mount and tough rear view camera

Written by Buck Pomerantz, Staff Writer - Creative, on 12/7/2012 12:22:00 PM
This heavy-duty little cube-sized camera comes everything necessary for a quick and easy installation. It comes with a 7-m cord already attached. The camera's mounted on a small hinge assembly that's adjustable using the included allen wrench. The camera cable plugs into a power supply module (2" x 1" x 1"). Then, a 3-m (almost 10') power/RCA harness connects that to power and your video receiver or monitor. The camera mount and the power module come with adhesive stick-on pads. The large fold-out instruction sheet carries detailed instructions in four languages, but not English. But that's okay, the illustrations are quite clear and captioned in English. Pioneer's ND-BC6 backup camera looks like a well-thought out product, with all necessary accessories included.

The provide a gauge of distance but they are not as smart as I have seen on more recent cars that I have rented (e.g., blinking red when too close). They are accurate within a foot or two. Yes. I used a pioneer headunit that allowed you to turn the camera off on and whenever you want so you can have it always on if you like. [ DOMINIC  Dec 06, 2014 ]
Yes it can as long as it is powered by your receiver it will show behind vehicle whenever vehicle is on. I use it with a pioneer receiver which is able to turn camera on and off. If it is wired to the reverse light as power, then it will only come on when vehicle is in reverse. [ DONALD  Dec 06, 2014 ]
Jim, On our install it can because the main unit has a separate touch screen that can turn it on and off. We go to our main screen and turn the camera on or off from there. We do not use the reverse option wire. It gives an excellent color picture. Therefore you need to see if your main unit has such an option. If it does you will need to manually get to this screen and toggle the camera on and off. I hope this helps. Billy [ BILLY J  Dec 05, 2014 ]
All depending on your head unit, some required to connect to reverse and some you can connet to hot lead so you can turn on and off [ TONY  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Through the system config screen on my Pioneer head units I can turn the camera on and off without putting the vehicle in reverse. [ Jason  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Yes [ SIMON  Dec 05, 2014 ]
I hate this answer but here goes.... It depends. It depends on the system to which it is attached. Mine is interfaced to the Pioneer AVIC-X850BT and it has a mode that allows a split screen of camera view and what other function the unit is in at the time. [ MICHAEL  Dec 05, 2014 ]
Yes. The software of the deck allows you to configure the camera to come on whenever you want. [ DARCY  Dec 05, 2014 ]
I don't have a Chevy suburban. However as small as the camera is I would think it would fit on your suburban. It works perfectly. [ RICHARD J  Jul 29, 2014 ]
Glad to help. This camera would not fit on our Land Cruiser. So, we had a license plate camera installed instead. The license plate camera is not very good for resolution. We did have this camera installed on our Avalon with great results. It' a great product for the Avalon. Just wished we could have gotten it to fit on the Land Cruiser. [ STEVE  Jul 29, 2014 ]
I got the pioneer camera because it plugged right into my pioneer receiver. Not sure what input your receiver has,so cant be sure which one to tell you. I have installed 2 Peak brand backup camera systems on different vehicles and have been VERY happy with them. They run about $70 and include a 4.3 inch monitor ( not sure if you want to mess with an additional monitor) ,but the camera may plug into yours. They are universal, so should work on any vehicle. Hope this helps. Good luck! [ DONALD  Jul 28, 2014 ]
