Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Great views easy to set up
Pros: Great pic st night as well
Cons: Not really any
There's no better time to install a rear-view camera in your vehicle than when you're already installing a new DVD or navigation receiver. Take advantage of your in-dash video capabilities by gaining a wide-angle view of what's behind you every time you shift into reverse. The Pioneer ND-BC8 backup cam enhances your rear view by counteracting harsh overexposure on bright days as well as giving you a sharp picture in low light.
Note: A rear-view camera provides an additional view when reversing your vehicle. It is intended to be used in conjuction with your rear- and side-view mirrors to give a fuller picture of what's behind you. It is not intended as a replacement for your mirrors.

Great views easy to set up
Pros: Great pic st night as well
Cons: Not really any
A good backup camera for the money great video image during the daytime easy to install. This camera matches a factory camera look.
Pros: Great wide angle can see a lot around the corners when backing
Cons: Not too good at night time it looks a little grainy during low light
Recently installed, so far so good. Clear picture!
The camera works well enough, but the install options are limited by its shape, etc. There is no centered position available on my 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan. The hatch handle is centered above the license plate. I put it centered under the spoiler, up high, but then found that the wiper hit it, so I got a shorter wiper blade and moved the camera off center to clear the wiper. If I were to do it over, I would have bought a license plate frame camera.
Pros: Works well.
Cons: Limited options for locating.
Clear field of view.
Camera works all right but its hard to tell the distance when backing up. It works good to see if someone is behind you. It is small and compact and works good on my jeep wrangler
Bought this for my son who had it installed and it is great for seeing things behind you when your backing up, small and compact.
It's nice to see what's behind me, especially with a 2-year old running around!
Great camera a must have works great on my 2009 chevy avalanche
Pros: Good quality camera for the money easy install good picture
Cons: Not so good at night
NICE CAMERA EASTY INTERFACE PLUG AND PLAY
This my first backup camera to actually own as well as install. I installed the camera in the factory location (for the stock Honda Camera) on my 8th gen Accord Sedan. I followed some of the OEM Honda instructions to mount the camera, which involved drilling holes in the OEM location of the camera, this allowed me to run the cable through and down the trunk lid hinges. I did have to remove the trunk insulation, back seat, and several interior panels in order to run wire down the passenger side of the car. Please be aware the harness is a two piece harness, one harness connected with the camera & one used to wire and run from the head unit. The section running & connected the head unit consists of three piece of wire: a video plug, an auxiliary power, and ground. The video plug is self explanatory and should be plugged in the brown video plug on the back of the head unit. The red auxiliary power should be wired with the red aux wire on the radio harness. The ground should be grounded to the chassis, I however wired it with the black ground on the harness. I may need to correct this as I am unsure if it will cause future problems. The head unit harness has a purple & white wire labeled "reverse wire". The installer runs a separate wire connected to the head unit (the reverse wire) to the rear of the vehicle to tap the reverse wire on the light. Overall the picture is great and I am satisfied with the purchase.
Cord has good length. Sticky tape on camera works better than I thought it would.
installed on a 2000 toyota 4runner sport edition with the brand new AVIC 8200Nex stereo is perfect bought same receiver for my 2005 ford excursion limited 4x4 but this camera on the 8200nex for my 4runner is okay its not that great at night or during the day for some reason its always grany camera will only mount upside down for me because the camera view is backwards so not easy to mount and still trying to find a good place to mount it want it above my license plate but not sure if it will get in the way of the licence plate lights the camera buy itself just isn't up to par for video quality
Pros: small size compact
Cons: low light extremely grainy day light very grainy wish there was more mounting brackets or styles of brackets
Easy to install. Great video. A little grainy at night but overall does a great job
I had this camera for a while maybe about a year. One day it stopped working out of no where, yes I checked all my connections even though I knew already that couldn't be the issue since it was still getting power and working but just showed a black screen. Apparently this is a common issue with this camera, I love pioneer but this camera needs a update.
Pros: Great build quality
Cons: Known to go out one day very soon
Nice camera. Small and inconspicuous. Very clear view as well as wide angle. Paired it with a Pioneer head unit so they work well together. Had it professionally installed so I can't comment on that, but works well to add a modern safety feature to a little bit older vehicle.
Pros: Solid build. Small footprint. Wide viewing angles and clear representation.
I have a 2010 Corvette. I installed a Pioneer AVIC 8200nex with the Pioneer ND-BC8 backup camera. This is a great improvement. The backup camera turns on the second you put the car in reverse and it clear. It works well in bright light and low light conditions.
Was easy to install, in a Boss BV960 Navigation system. Great picture, more than I expected.
Great camera paired with avh 4200 install was really easy with the help of crutchfield customer support which is top notch in my opinion guidelines were easily adjust, no lag when shifted into reverse it immediately switches to camera so no sitting and waiting for it to switch over or having to hit a button on radio to switch
Pros: Guidelines, no lag when switching to the camera, easy install, picture quality in daylight is good
Cons: Picture quality in low light scenarios is below par
Great camera good price, easy to install, highly recommend
Pros: Good picture, good depth of field
Cons: No guidelines on rest view
Great wide view. I feel so much safer backing up in my suv.
Daylight view is very crisp and clear. However, night is extremely grainy and colorless. I thought our Audi factory camera was grainy at night but this is much worse. This camera does not have the backup lines but in my case this is a plus since my head unit provides the lines.
Pros: Very simple to install
Cons: Extreme night time grain
This thing is tiny, as you would want it to be. Don't go by the picture. It was straight forward to install. Connected to my Pioneer in dash DVD. Once all hooked up worked first time perfectly. Amazed how strong the self adhesive tape is on the mounting bracket. i just cleaned the chrome bumper with quality auto glass cleaner and it stuck on there to stay! Use alcohol based glass cleaner NOT ammonia based that's for houses not Auto's. Good pic quality and helps a lot on a full size 4 door pickup truck.
Works great and plenty wide to see everything behind the car clearly. Grainy in low light but what isn't. Not as good as an Audi camera but close.
I connected the ND-BC8 with a NEX-5200. The install was very simple for my vehicle (2014 Subaru STI) - almost plug in play if I didn't have to run the lines :) The camera itself is decent in day; however, at night with low light, it's not that great - very noisy. I understand that this is a low cost camera but I expected better quality for low light situations being that it's a super-wide angle lense with medium aperture.
Pros: Easy Install Clear image (day)
Cons: Bad image (night)
Works great. Has good field of view and clarity. I do wish it had a few more mounting options that were included.
Pros: Works great and easy install.
Cons: Not enough mounting options included.
Camera works great, very small. A plus is the x-tra long cabling. Would buy again.
Pros: Long cable, small size.
So I had an aftermarket camera that was going bad, replaced it with this came, the difference in image quality from the aftermarket even when it was working is amazing. I want to drive around backward. The width of field also was a big plus. I have very good side vision for when you back up and someone ignores you when you are backing out and is going to pass you before you get out.
This is the best back up camera I ever bought
Back up camera works great easy to install. Thanks to the crutchfield team for great service and fast shipping.
works well. had it wired backwards to start. Crutchfield techs helped.
Pros: works well
Cons: grainy at night
Excellent high quality product from Pioneer! I made the mistake of initially purchasing a different back up camera for my Toyota Tundra and decided to exchange it for the Pioneer ND-BC8 which has worked flawlessly. Install was a breeze, plenty of wire to run the entire length of my long double cab truck. I mounted the camera to a plain black license plate frame for a clean factory look and ran all the wiring using .25" wiring conduit. Looks great and I'm very happy with my purchase. My only wish would be for camera lines to aid in backing up, but I'd still buy this product again, even without it.
Pros: Super high quality image
Cons: No camera lines
Excellent image quality. Installation was easy. The only issue I had was the video pin would not stay put in the factory connector of the extension that came with it. Even though I spent 2hrs trying to get the pin to finally stay put (though I don't think it will stay long term) I don't feel it detracted from the quality of the camera. Manufacturing defects happen, I just happen to be the lucky one.
Pros: Image quality is good.
Much better image quality than the Optix RVC910IR I replaced. No grid lines but it has such a wide angle lens you do not need grid lines.
Extremely clear and wide view!
Pros: Very wide field of view.
Cons: The mount could be better..
The marketing department over did this one. Looks huge and cumbersome. Not so, a one inch cube with plenty of mounting options. Excellent picture and works so well with my NEX.
Good camera, clear quality, & good visibility at night. I just wished it had a wider angle.
Works great. It is grainy in low light but it adequate for backing up. Seems to be well built. The intermediate connector seems a little fragile so be careful with the it the wires are very small which makes it easier to route but not as robust.
Easy to install, and looks great.
Pros: Install was a breeze
Cons: Does not have guidance lines on screen
It's is a good product in my opinion and was easy to install. Does the job it's asked to do!!!
Pros: Functions, and install
Dollar for dollar, this seems to be a good camera. It has generous amounts of wire for doing the installation (keep in mind you will be wiring power and all from the front of the vehicle with this wiring configuration). Image is clear and usable in most lighting situations, night time included. Seems durable. Time will tell, but all good so far. Note, it has no guidelines, so be sure the head unit you buy does (IE, the Pioneers).
Pros: Clean image easy installation (assuming you can find the reverse light hot) durable good low light performance
Cons: Would be nice to have a rear wiring option (tap into back up lights)
This goes Great with my pioneer receiver!
Great little camera! A lot smaller than I thought too! Comes with everything I needed. Works great at night! Works even better at night, which I didn't think was possible, if you get LED reverse lights. I have the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VOLTAGE GOING TO THE PURPLE/WHITE WIRE IF YOU WANT IT TO TURN ON AUTOMATICALLY WHEN YOU SHIFT INTO REVERSE WITH THE 4200NEX. You can use it with "camera view" if you don't hook up the reverse camera wire (purple/white), which literally takes two minutes. Splice it into something with a current. I just used the solid, unused, darker green wire from my AD-BOX1 harness. Couldn't have been any easier. Do this your self!!!! Other retailers will charge you more than you paid for the camera to install it! Buy a set of accessory panel pry tools to hide the wire under the running board panels or do what I did and run the cables inside the weather stripping around the doors and tuck into some panels you can gentlypull back with your fingers with plenty of room. I did it in a 2014 Malibu. I could've put it in a semi truck withThe amount of cable that comes with it! It holds great, looks oem, and you get troubleshooting/customer service for life on it through Crutchfield!!! With this price and someone from Crutchfield helping you the whole way if you need it, (I HIGHLY doubt it) you can't beat it. Crutchfield cares about their customers! I'm buying another for my front grill even!!
Pros: Everything like I stated in my review
Cons: I've had it through almost every situation weather wise, and it hasn't budged. I LOVE IT!!!!
Good picture quality. Would really hep if it had guide lines on it as things are much closer than they appear. Install was easy.
Pros: Good quality picture. Easy installation.
Cons: No guide lines in video feed
Picture is ok. Good durable body and plenty of wire in package.
Pros: Works excellent.Excellent match for my pioneer 4200 nex unit.Picture is grainy at night but not terrible and excellent day time picture.
Cons: Wish there was some distance indicators built into the image. Lighting conditions can affect the image quality.
First time ever that I installed a rear view camera on an older vehicle. Since I have a charter business and trailer both my boats, I do a LOT of reversing and now, instead of having to do multiple times of reversing to get the ball situated perfectly, it only takes ONE time to get it perfectly aligned to connect the trailer to the ball hitch. Over time, it saves a lot of frustration and most importantly, time.
Pros: All good, happy with this camera, very clear and crisp
I really like the camera. It has a really clear picture.
Works as expected. Would recommend to others
Pros: Wide angle lens give large area of view. Small and compact. Included wiring is long enough for any vehicle.
Cons: Wish there was some distance indicators built into the image. Lighting conditions can affect the image quality.
Bought this for my pickup to go with the Kenwood DDX6902 head unit I bought. Biggest issue for me was figuring out how to connect the interface wire from the Kenwood to the back up light circuit. Ended up running the wire all the way back to the tail lights. Really nice having this when backing up. Great clarity and color. Guide lines come from the Kenwood unit and are a great help. My main concern is how long the adhesive will last that holds the camera to my license plate.
Pros: Great resolution
Cons: The pain of running the wires from the camera to the head unit.
For the price this is one hell of of a camera. I highly recommend this to everyone!!!!!
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: No screws to put on car only sticky tape. I had to add my own screws
The camera comes with a ton of wire and was very easy and straight forward to install. The picture during the day is pretty good but at night forget about it, it looks like it is snowing. I thought my OEM camera was bad, this is much worse. Needless to say the camera is OK at best.
Very nice and clear camera for the price. I have only had it installed for a few weeks now, but so far very happy!
Pros: Clear picture.
Cons: Nothing to add so far...
Works excellent.Excellent match for my pioneer 8100 nav unit.Picture is grainy at night but not terrible and excellent day time picture.
Pros: Works well.
Cons: Picture not as good at night
The back up camera came with everything listed, but the installation instructions were a bit confusing. I was able to get everything installed and I'm working through some minor issues.
Pros: Good camera
Cons: difficult instructions depending on what you are trying to hook up to.
Picture is ok. Pioneer head unit wont repond to reverse, but likely the HU at fault. Good durable body and plenty of wire in package.
Pros: Tough small
Cons: Pic is just ok
Camera works very well. Great picture.
I purchased this particular camera because it was built by Pioneer (same as my head unit) and after spending so much on a head unit, I just couldn't afford much else. Because the unit has a little bracket that it attaches to (rather than a 1-piece solid housing), the camera sticks out just a little bit from the body work. On the plus side, you can adjust the camera to either see straight down or (as I did) a little further upwards so that you can see a little farther back. Field of vision is very wide, and quality of picture is very good during the day. At night the picture is a little grainy and is worse the farther away you get, but I can park in the garage and see the neighbors house across the street well enough. Installation of the camera itself was a snap, getting it routed through the hatch with the 4R's roll down rear window was not that fun. Best if installed close to an overhang (like by the license plate).
Pros: Great picture quality, wide angle lens, adjustable angle, came with a VERY long cable (good with SUV). Way better than the license plate frame cameras (in my opinion).
Cons: Camera is large enough to stick out a tiny bit away from body work. Probably not suitable for a flat place install (Like Jeep Wrangler).
The camera is nice but very grainy at night. I installed this camera with a pioneer head unit and it did not have the option to add guide lines. I checked in all the settings and I read the whole instruction booklet. I even looked on YouTube. I guess Pioneer wants you to buy one of the more expensive units instead of the cheap $300 unit that I bought. Besides that I am content with the camera.
Pros: Makes backing up a whole lot easier
Cons: Very grainy at night
Great product install with a Pioneer 6100
Easy install. Works great.
Pros: Very easy install. Wiring was long enough for Chrysler 300
Cons: None yet
Great unit, compact size - Mounted to rear bumper of my 03 Silverado out of harms way. I use it to back up to trailers so I have it set to see the trailer ball. Wires were ran from back of the deck to Camera, RGA plug and power/ ground. Works good day and night.
Pros: Small size, ease to hook up. Wire harness had a plug located half way back to allow for camera replacement without rewiring all the way to the Deck in the truck.
Cons: Owners manual noted not to hook to the power source up to same power that the Deck gets power or it could cause radio reception issues.
Fairly easy to install. Longest part of the install is making sure the camera lens is properly mounted and secured to provide proper viewing when gear is place in reverse. Crutchfield provided excellent tech support - provided schematic drawing thru email on where to connect or tap the "reverse" wire in the fuse box.
Pros: Simple plug-n-play to my existing Pioneer NEX audio system. Good visibility day and night.
Cons: Would like to see scale markings on the viewing screen but this might rely on the audio system.
excelent clarity - great bright image
Pros: easy install - works great
Video looks great, even at night. Kit had everything I needed to mount it. If I could change one thing, I would increase the horizontal viewing angle to match my wide Yukon. Thank being said, I'm very happy with this camera.
Pros: Great video quality
Works well both day and night. Would not hesitate to buy again. Wiring was borderline length wise but there was enough there for my truck. Crew cab superduty with 8 foot box so it should work for anything smaller.
Pros: Works as advertised, good night vision as well as day.
Cons: Resolution could be better
Wiring a little flimsy. Picture is good in daylight, but weak and really grainy at night. There is an excessive amount of wiring, and because of the way it ia built, is difficult to shorten (for example the RCA plug which is really long.
Pros: Bright daylight picture.
Cons: Very grainy picture at night. Flimsy wiring. No way to shorten leads.
I primarily wanted to post this review to address the single concern that was raised by the one review for this camera that exists on here at the time of this writing (12/22/2015). The other review complains that this camera "Failed to have overlay distance guides" (-Bill). The reason this camera does not have built in guide lines, is that Pioneer designs its headunits to have the guidelines projected by the headunit internally. If the camera was also projecting guide lines, you would have a double overlay that is confusing to look at. Within Pioneer headunits, you are able adjust the position of the guidelines to match your vehicle, so that they will actually be accurate and mean something. When it is only built in to the camera, you, generally, have no ability to adjust their position beyond the camera's physical installation location. And, if you are forced to install the camera off center or at an angle, the lines it projects are even more useless. If your headunit is not able to produce the guidelines for you, then you probably should look for a different camera than this one. But if it can, or if you don't want the lines in the first place, this is a great rear view camera.
Pros: Excellent video quality, excellent integration to Pioneer headunits
Cons: No guidelines if paired with a headunit that doesn't generate them natively
Would not recommend this camera. It does not give a n accurate picture due to making everything look farther away than it is.
Cons: Failed to have overlay distance guides, hard to judge your distance

|Lux Rating||0.9 Lux (min)|
|Horizontal Viewing Angle||129 deg|
|Vertical Viewing Angle||105 deg|
|Plug type||Composite video|
Compatibility: The Pioneer ND-BC8 universal rear-view camera is designed for use with Pioneer and other manufacturer in-dash Multimedia/Navigation head units that feature an integrated monitor and rear-view camera composite video input.
Waterproof Aluminum Chassis: The camera is built into a compact waterproof aluminum case, making it perfect for mounting outside the vehicle.
CMOS Image Sensor: The ND-BC8 universal rear-view camera utilizes a 1/4" color CMOS image sensor that has approximately 310,000 pixels to deliver a high quality picture. A CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor offers improved resolution and eliminates the vertical light "smear" phenomenon that occurs when a camera using a CCD sensor is exposed to a very bright light source or direct sunlight.
Wide Angle Lens: The 129° horizontal and 105° vertical viewing angles provide an excellent near field view of anything behind you.
Automatic Sensitivity Compensation: The camera automatically adjusts to the available light, from 0.9 lux to 100,000 lux. The 0.9 lux rating ensures you'll have visibility at night in low light, while the 100,000 lux rating means the picture won't be washed out in bright sunlight.
Mounting: The rear view camera comes supplied with a pre-installed self-adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up and down.

This is a universal camera, and should be able to work with any Head unit that has a video input. I do not have the exact head unit that you do, but if it has a back up camera jack or a video input, should work fine. You will have to POWER the camera though. The unit must be wired into the reverse light circuit and grounded under the dash or to the frame. [ JOHN Sep 25, 2017 ]
I don't have a pickup, but you might want to put it just above the hitch (if you have one). You get a 2-fer. Can sight the ball to the trailer receptacle, and have good visibility too. The Boss features the standard composite video (RCA) input for connecting a rear view camera and the Pioneer ND-BC8 camera offers the same composite video connection. So, yes, the two are compatible. The Pioneer camera comes packaged with a self adhesive bracket which can tilt the camera up & down so, you can secure it in the best spot to get the angle you'll need. I hope that helps. The Dezl 760 should offer a 3.5mm video input on it's mounting cradle. This allows you to connect a rear-view camera (like this Pioneer) but you will need a Composite Video (RCA) to 3.5mm (minijack) adapter for the connection. I hope that helps. I'm not sure, I have the AVH-X4600BT. But this camera is extremely clear and looks better than a lot of the factory systems that I've seen. [ Kimmar Nov 18, 2016 ]
Yes [ ZACHARY Nov 08, 2016 ]
I am not familiar with the AVH-291BT. However, I did install this camera on a 2006 4Runner that did not come with a back up camera originally. This camera will work with any head unit that has a backup camera interface. The camera gives a very good picture during the day (at night picture is a little degraded), but well worth the money. I liked the fact that you can tilt this camera, rather than having it in a fixed position. Mounted well and never moved due to vibration or just from being on the rear hatch. You will have to provide power from the backup light system and a ground. [ JOHN Nov 08, 2016 ]
I have no problem with it. The only knock on it that I have is that it's wide view which makes things seem farther back than they actually are. Which might be all cameras. But had it a year and have had no problems. [ Robert Nov 07, 2016 ]
Power the camera with 12V constant instead of the power from the reverse lamps. The head unit has an option to switch to camera view. [ ZACHARY Oct 03, 2016 ]
I think it would depend on your receiver. I've got the AppRadio 4 (SPH-DA120) from Pioneer, and there's a mode to leave the camera display on while the car is on. I used it on a camping trip when my car was loaded up quite a bit and I had reduced visibility out the rear window. It definitely came in handy. I'd check in your radio's manual to see if there's a similar feature. [ Alexander Oct 03, 2016 ]
Not sure...I guess it would depend on the radio you use! [ Steve Oct 03, 2016 ]
This camera will work on that unit. Please be advised that both unit and camera don't offer the on screen gridline guide. [ Adrian Sep 30, 2016 ]
Thanks for your question. Yes it will work. On the product page for the Pioneer we have the BC8 listed on the compatible accessories tab. Hope that helps. [ Kenny Jul 19, 2016 ] Staff

The Pioneer ND-BC8 in combination with the AVH-X3800BH wouldn't provide any distance guidelines; however we do have some cameras that provide distance guidelines to any video screen unit, including the AVH-X3800BH. If you want to discuss those options, you can reach out to our Product Advisors--either by phone at 888.955.6000 or by chat/email using the "Contact Us" link at the top of our website. I hope that helps. [ Larry Mar 01, 2016 ] Staff
I installed this with a 6000 series Pioneer and it worked very well. Daytime picture is excellent, night time is a little degraded, but I was more than satisfied for the price. I liked the fact that I could tilt it also rather than being in a fixed position. [ JOHN Nov 08, 2016 ]
Yes I have the 5000 nex and it works well [ Kyler Feb 27, 2016 ]

Thanks for your question. Yes this universal camera is meant to be able to hook up to any receiver with a composite video rear-view camera input and the AVH-X8500BHS is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. Hope that helps. [ Kenny Feb 06, 2016 ] Staff

Have not installed yet, but instructions say it is. [ Ron Jan 18, 2016 ]
Not sure about the 2700, but it works great with the 3700. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't the connections look to be the same. [ JOHN P Jan 17, 2016 ]
Yes. This is the combination that I have. [ John Jan 15, 2016 ]
