Our take on the Pioneer DEH-P8300UB

The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB CD receiver plays your favorite media and offers easy control over your car's audio system. And good looks don't hurt either — this Pioneer features a stunningly simple control panel and a snazzy animated OEL display that'll look right at home in your dash.

The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB CD receiver plays your favorite media and offers easy control over your car's audio system. And good looks don't hurt either — this Pioneer features a stunningly simple control panel and a snazzy animated OEL display that'll look right at home in your dash.

The DEH-P8300UB also sets a high standard for sound quality. Its 5-band equalizer lets you tune your tonal balance, while Pioneer's Sound Retriever circuitry restores information lost when you compress your music files. You can adjust the range of frequencies you send to your speakers with the high- and low-pass filters.

Plug in and rock
If you own it, you can probably plug it into this versatile receiver. The front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs offer plenty of plug-in audio options, including built-in iPod® and iPhone® controls. Once your iPod's connected, its digital-to-analog converter is bypassed, and the receiver uses its own high-quality DAC to deliver your music files with the highest fidelity possible.

If you listen to Pandora® on your iPhone®, Pioneer's got you covered. Download Pioneer's free Pandora app, hook up your iPhone to the receiver's USB port, and you can use the receiver's controls to navigate your way through your Pandora stations. You'll enjoy total control over Pandora, including displays of artist, album, and song information on the receiver's screen.

Big plans for your car audio system
Connect amps and subs to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs, and build a high-powered car audio system that'll rule the parking lot. For more media options, you can connect a satellite radio to open up a world of music, sports, and news programming, or add an HD Radio® tuner to access the improved sound quality broadcast by participating stations. And if you're a phone addict, you'll want to add Pioneer's Bluetooth adapter to enjoy hands-free calls while you're driving.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

John D from Oshawa, ON on 11/8/2011

I'm a minimilistic kind of guy, so once I saw this HU it was an easy decision to upgrade from my factory stereo. Once I got used to the menus and my frustrations ceased, I was not disappointed. One thing I really enjoy is being able to change my music from my iPhone rather than through the HU (had to switch it to appmode) because while driving the knob is awkward to use and time consuming to pick a song. Overall, I don't think I will be switching it for another HU anytime soon

Pros: Great sound, minimilistic look, OEL display makes daytime viewing easy, subwoofer conrols

Cons: Joystick knob is awkward to use when driving, often find myself pressing a side button rather than the centre and the manual is impossible to understand

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound quality and able to dim display and buttons with dash lights. I had to return the unit since I just could not live without the clock being able to stay on the display and no radio station buttons. I'm not an IPOD user so the few buttons that do exist tend to have very limited function and not what I need. Overall nice unit, but instead of having the one knob/joystick function as the primary means to get around the device, I would suggest more buttons for easier access. Pioneer please do some customer feedback, great unit but my Pioneer deck from 2002 is more feature rich and easier to navigate unit minus the USB/Aux ports this updated unit has.

Pros: Great sound as expected from a Pioneer. USB, CD, and AUX ports worked perfectly with no lag. Display and buttons can dim with your dash lights (not many have this anymore)

Cons: Clock never stays on display, as soon as you push another button its gone. No buttons for radio stations,(maybe not a con), since I knew that when purchasing, but just can't get used to that joystick knob. Unless your an IPOD user half of buttons that do exist are not for general use.

What a feature packed unit. The Pandora thumbs up/down, and Pandora station search features are convenient. Many sound adjusting options. I have a sub, and really appreciate the reverse phase option. The only things i can complain about are; 1-Shiny face is impossible to see in the sun's glare, 2- sound quality was just not as good as my ALPINE CDE-103BT.

I received my pioneer radio on Sept 12 2011 and had the radio installed the same day. I couldn't believe the sound of this radio. It is so nice i will make an excuse to go somewhere in my car. Whoever wrote a bad review for this radio is crazy. This pioneer is off the chain and I love it. The blue lighting and sound clarity is awsome and it sounds great in my 1984 Chevy Monte Carlo. As Tony the Tiger would say ya'll are Grrrrreat!

A tale of Pioneer and Kenwood

Audiotruth from Destin, FL on 7/30/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Started out with the Kenwood X695 - kept it 2 days. The display is useless during the daylight hours. The display looks cheap and silly with the lights around the USB and aux. ports. The sound was good once you spent a couple of hours dialing it in --- the audio options are dizzying and the interface is insanely difficult to use and learn. The remote is TEENY TINY ITTY BITTY rendering it useless. So back the Kenwood went in exchange for the Pioneer 8300ub. My god, what a difference in every way possible. The Pioneer is rated 8 watts RMS less than the Kenwood... doesn't matter: as soon as you see the heatsink on the back of the Pioneer you know this is going to be a beast. The audio controls are far fewer than the Kenwood: doesn't matter. The sound right out of the box is far superior than the Kenwood. But fear not, the Pioneer gives you an incredibly well-designed and intuitive 7-way joystick controller to set everything up as you need to dial in the sound. And the 5-band EQ combined with Pioneer's famous-since-the-70's loudness tuning. For those of you that understand the damping factory of amplifiers, you will immediately recognize exactly how accurate the Pioneer is forming the notes and frequencies from the mid-bass on down. Even my stock Ford speakers have become tight and accurate just on the basis of the damping factor. The remote is large enough to actually be great to use, not lose every 4 minutes and unlike the Kenwood, this remote RESPONDS flawlessly.

    Awesome Pioneer Stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this deck about a month or two ago and so far i have had no problems with it. Some people say the screen is too small and needs to be bigger, but imo, its big enough to see most of the song title and artist. Definitely improved the sound of the speakers. Controls are NOT hard to figure out if you just sit there and play around with, the blue display is beautiful at night. The only thing i wish it had was a USB connection in the back so i could hide my ipod. But other than that, i recommend this stereo to anyone who wants a reliable brand name.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the sound emitting from the unit in all the functions I use. Updated unit and speakers (two pair of Pioneer TS-G671M 6.5" 4-way Speakers). All this replaced a 17 year old cd player and speakers Listened to Pink Floyd "Delicate Sound of Thunder" and heard new upper end and mid-range missed before. Took some time to figure out the programming. Because . . . the manual is impossible to read, even with eyes younger than mine (I remember American Bandstand from Philly, and Elvis' debut on the show. My aunt went wild) But I digress. I would recommend this unit to anyone who would ask me about such a purchase.

    Blue color is horrible!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The blue color is horrible and cannot be altered. I exchanged it for DEH-4300UB where I could customize the color to match the lighting in my car and now it looks like stock! Sound quality is very good but nothing different from 4300UB and you are paying for the OEL animated display. Also, the trim on it is shiny and stands out from the dash unlike 4300UB which blends in.

    Music Makeover

Big AL from Sherman Oaks, CA on 5/22/2011

I installed this receiver in my 2006 Ford Ranger ex-cab as an upgrade to replace an Eclipse head unit Iv'e had for about ten years. The install was a piece of cake, and didn't take long. This unit has many features, so you will need to give yourself at least an hour, perhaps more to read through the manual to understand how to navigate the controls, adjust the settings and dial in your listening and entertainment preferences. Don't rush through this part or you will get frustrated. It's has three RCA pre-outs and is perfect for a system with multiple amps / sub like mine. It has really good loudness adjustments, awesome equalizer settings and sub-woofer control, suitable to every genre of music and produces amazing sound imaging that will place the listener "right in the center of the music"! The front USB is great for listening with my Ipod or flash drive, and has excellent didital quality playback that makes my system sound better than before. I love the multiple equalizer features. And the entertaint screens are pretty cool too, as well as the display in general. I like the removeable face fearture for security, but not happy that a protective case is not supplied with the unit. If your looking for a music makeover that won't break the bank, this unit provides mega returns on your investment that will place you right at the center of the music, inside the music, just like a live performance.

    Pioneer DEH-P8300UB

    Robert from Branford on 4/27/2011

I got this radio a few days ago. I think it's great as far as sound goes. The reception seems good. The display at night is real cool. As far as those items are concerned, it is a 4 star. However, the display in the daytime is terrible and almost impossible to read as the information is small in size and doesn't show enough about the song. The glare off the screen is also terrible, making it even harder to read. I can't really read it while driving. I use XM radio and have to spend another 100 bucks to listen to it. I think it should have been built in, even if not used. For these items, I give it 2 stars. I should have looked around more. I will buy my next item at Crutchfield however if they sell it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this head unit today. Overall this is a decent product, it does take a lot of getting used to though. The multi-functional knob is a bit awkward but does the job its supposed to. Fairly easy to work and the install was easy. The only complaint I have is that Crutchfield said it "fits" in my 2008 Nissan Versa, but not totally. This unit only fits without the plastic edge on the front and has not even half a millimeter of space on any side. The other issue I had was that the install frame that Crutchfield sent with it did not fit in my vehicle (even though the packaging said it did). The plastic parts were way too thick so I ended up using part of the factory frame and part of the plastic one and drilled my own holes to make it work. Overall the Pioneer receiver is a good buy and does what it says it will.

    Could have been better

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I spent quite a while looking for the right receiver to fit my needs without breaking the bank and wanted to go back to Pioneer after 10+ years. This unit had all the features (3 sets of 4V preamp outputs, EQ, front USB, wireless remote) at the right price and I decided I could deal with the bright blue display. Sound quality and tuner performance are excellent. Navigation through MP3 files on thumb drive is straightforward. ...But 1. There are "dead spots" where the remote control is ineffective - where ever my arm and hand are comfortable, even 6" in front of, and pointed directly at the receiver. 2. Audio adjustment with the multi-control knob is cumbersome. The remote helps but none of it can be easily or safely done while driving. I don't understand the bass boost control when there is an EQ and sub level control. 3. The orange wire on the harness is not described in the manual. I deduced that it was for the dimmer control and that was apparently correct, but it only dims the button back light and not the display. 4. The volume control goes up to at least a ridiculous 60. Adjusting it is too slow a process. Features and sound quality are fine, and most important, I guess. But with everything else detracting from the experience I'm already saving for something better.

Love this head unit. Plenty of customization options to adjust the music just the way I like and easy enough to change it on the fly when switching from one genre to another. The only down side is the multifunction knob can be a little tricky is you have a rough ride. However a supplied IR remote solves that issue nicely.

    Upgraded my Life to 2.0

    Faris from Malaysia on 3/21/2011

Great features for not much. Had upgraded from a 5 year old DEH 5xxx. This has RCA output for both front and rear channels. I drove the long route back home so I could hear it. I have never heard CDs sound so good in a car. Only one small problem (and only if you are partial to AC/DC's Ironman 2 OST), was if you had an SD card and your ripped MP3 music arranged to the tracks, you can't go from track 1 (Shoot to Thrill) backwards to track 15 (Highway to Hell). It would go to last track on the previous folder.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit provides excellent sound quality and a significant increase in power even with the stock speakers in my 08 Ram 1500. Lots of options, works great with my iPhone, and pandoralink is awesome (no longer need the separate app, just load pandora it'll autodetect). Few annoyances, some of the 'entertainment' settings cycle between dark and bright and are really distracting, but I just set it to the date/clock. For some reason it also won't turn off automatically and I wired 1:1 on the wiring harness, but still, a fantastic product.

    Display Features

Detachable Face Security: This unit features Detachable Face Security. If the front panel is not detached from the head unit within five seconds of turning off the ignition, a warning tone will sound. The warning tone can be turned off in the menu, if desired. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case(142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Large Full-Dot OEL Display: The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB features a blue Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) dot matrix display. The head unit's large full-dot OEL display makes it easier to see what is playing in most lighting conditions. The unit's large full-dot OEL display offers 3-lines of text. You can easily view file and folder lists from your MP3, WMA, AAC, and CD Text-encoded discs, radio presets, or data from your connected iPod/iPhone. The brightness of the display can be set between 0 and 15.

Multi-Language Display: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display. You can select the language which is best suited to your first language - English, French, or Spanish.

Ever Scroll: When the Ever Scroll feature is set to On, recorded text information scrolls continuously on the display. It will auto-scroll up to 64 characters. Set this feature to Off if you prefer the information to scroll only once.

Calendar/Clock Display: The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB provides time, date, month, and year display.

Entertainment Displays: You can enjoy entertainment displays while listening to each sound source. You can choose from the following:  background visual, genre, background picture (1/2/3/4), simple display, movie screen (1/2), and calendar.

Engine Time Alert: This setting allows  you to measure the length of time that elapses from when the machine is turned on and display the amount of elapsed time per set period (15 min., 30 min., or Off). There will also be an audible alarm. This function is handy if you are listening to the radio with the vehicle' ignition is in the accessory position, and the engine off.

Reverse Mode: If you don't perform an operation within approximately 30 seconds, screen indications start to reverse, and then continue reversing every 10 seconds.

Illumination Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. You can turn the dimmer function On or Off. The orange/white illumination wire must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit in order for this feature to work.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the Source button turns off audio output, but the clock display remains on. When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the clock button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier:The DEH-P8300UB is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the DEH-P8300UB are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs for the DEH-P8300UB are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

7-Way Rotary Commander: The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB features a 7-Way Rotary Commander for easy control. You can scroll through your music and audio settings with greater ease using the 7-way rotary commander.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Preset EQ: The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB is equipped with seven EQ presets. You can choose from Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2.

Graphic EQ: The DEH-P8300UB's two Custom EQ modes (1 & 2) let you adjust the head unit's 5-band graphic EQ (100Hz, 315Hz, 1.25kHz, 3.15kHz, & 8kHz). You can adjust each band between +6 to -6.

Bass Boost: The Bass Boost function raises the level of sounds lower than 100Hz. You can select a desired level of bass boost between 0 and 6 (Gain: 0dB to +12dB).

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

Three Pair of 4.0-Volt Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-P8200UD features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The DEH-P8300UB employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • High Pass: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • Low Pass: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer DEH-P8300UB lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    Radio Functions

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.

BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.

Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

HD Radio Ready: This unit is compatible with the optional Pioneer GEX-P20HD HD Radio tuner (130GEXP20H, sold separately) allowing you to tune available HD Radio stations.
