Our take on the Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4

Apple's CarPlay has made quite a splash since it first appeared. And what's not to like? You get quick access to your music, navigation, contacts and more, combined with voice control that makes for safer driving. And it's built around the easy-to-use and familiar iOS screens we know from our iPhones®. Now Pioneer's made it easy to experience CarPlay with the SPH-DA120. Put this receiver into your car, hook up your iPhone, and you'll enjoy all that CarPlay has to offer. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third party streaming music apps, too. AppRadio — the next generation

Pioneer's innovative AppRadio platform moves forward with their SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 receiver. This versatile Pioneer builds upon the impressive capabilities of the AppRadio 3 receiver by adding some new features, including compatibility with Apple CarPlay, an improved graphical user interface (GUI) that makes it easier to access and use your apps, along with dual USB inputs, an auxiliary input, and a complete set of preamp outputs — front, rear, and subwoofer.

Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4

Control your apps from the large 6.2" touchscreen.

AppRadioLIVE makes it easy

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

And what apps can you take advantage of? You'll find plenty to enjoy, including MotionX-GPS Drive, INRIX® traffic, AUPEO! Personal Radio, Pandora® Internet radio, and Pioneer's MIXTRAX, with more coming down the road. The apps will look great on the 6.2" capacitive touchscreen, which recognizes all zoom, swipe, and pinch gestures just as if you were using your smartphone.

Note: AppRadio Mode and AppRadioLIVE are currently not compatible with iOS 8 due to stability and display issues. Please see "Details" for more information.

Siri® Eyes Free

If you have an iPhone 4S or 5, you'll hear Siri's voice prompts through your vehicle's sound system, and you can make commands or ask questions through the microphone that's included with this receiver. You can set reminders, ask for songs, request directions, or anything else you'd normally do with your iPhone.

Works with Android™ phones

The AppRadio 3 doesn't leave Android by the wayside when it comes to features, either. App Mode supports many Android phones, and you can download a free Pioneer app that enables voice commands with your Android phone.

Talk hands-free and stream audio wirelessly with Bluetooth®

Built-in Bluetooth adds to the versatility of this cool receiver — pair your phone, and you'll be able to talk hands-free and access your phone book from the touchscreen. You can even stream audio from your smartphone to the receiver.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then  program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Complement your setup with a phone mount

The AppRadio 4 requires input from your iPhone from time to time — most notably when running the MotionX GPS Drive app. It's a good idea to mount your iPhone where it's easy to reach. Check out our selection of Pro.Fit mounts.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really enjoy my purchase of this radio unit. Needed to upgrade the stock radio in my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, as I needed a rear view camera. This unit is great, as with Apple Car Play, certain functions and apps or your iPhone are mirrored on the screen of the radio, making it easy to maneuver from one to the next. This unit also allows you to use the Maps app from your phone, hence making it unnecessary to spend hundreds of dollars more for a unit of equivalent quality with GPS system. The folks at Crutchfield were awesome, they delivered on their promise and I feel confident that the work they provided was of the highest quality. The only negative point I see is that navigating between the Apple Car Play screen and functions and the Pioneer unit screen are not necessarily super intuitive but I am sure this will get easier with time.

    2006 Toyota Tundra
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with the stereo!! It arrived quickly with everything I needed to do a self install. I love how it functions, especially with how compatable it is with Apple CarPlay. The only thing that would make the stereo better would be an integral beer tap!

Pros: Ease of use, CarPlay compatibility, ease of home installation.

Cons: The radio installation was easy to understand; however, the steering wheel control wire harness recommended by Crutchfield gets a grade of D-. The harness is designed to be used in almost any vehicle and therefore it has numerous wires that were not comparable with my Toyota Tundra. The problem is that the instructions did not explain this, were confusing, were poorly laid out, and did not explain how to properly connect the right wires to my car and new stereo.

Good replacement, but didn't blow me away.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a nice upgrade to the ten year old oem model in the used car I just purchased. As with anything new, it took a little bit to figure everything out. The first mistake made was not hooking up the GPS boosting antenna. The clock is set automatically by the GPS satellites. That was annoying, so the clock was turned off to start. The glass screen is nice. The only issue with that was glare. In this little used car, there is a ton of light that comes in. I could not see the screen. I fixed that issue by using an anti-glare screen for an iPad and cutting to size. A few times Siri got hung on a loop when giving voice commands to send a text. "What would you like to say" "What would you like to say" repeat, repeat, repeat... without giving time to say anything. Humorous and annoying. There have been a few times that I have had to unplug the phone and plug it back in for the unit and phone to work properly together. Since it has only been a few weeks, I cannot comment on the stability over time. I have tested running it bluetooth, carplay and mirror mode. I consistently use carplay mode. I can control what I need that way. Will use mirror mode at times if the kids are in the car. I am happy with the purchase, but think I was expecting more with the Pioneer name and the price. Does what I need it to do, but had the potential to really blow me away.

Pros: Carplay, Mirror Mode, Touchscreen, HDMI, 2 USB ports *not to be used at the same time, some customization.

Cons: Must hook up the GPS antenna to set the clock (no manual setting) Glare off the glass Ease of use (Various modes / learning curve)

Purchased this for my 16 year old niece as a gift. Besides the sheer surprise she loves the head unit. Her, with little car audio knowledge can easily navigate through the head unit and as an apple user the apple car play was a perfect choice. Installation was a breeze in her 2005 Nissan Altima. Couldn't be more happy with this purchase!! Crutchfield has always been a go to for advice and selection. While this purchase was made on line I've had great experiences when making purchases. Box arrived in undamaged, properly packed with no damage. Great purchase, experience!! Will continue to work with Crutchfield for additional purchases!!

Like the receiver. However, it takes a bit (7-10 secs) to load the OS and does not come with the HD Radio option. Overall is a good purchase and nice to be able to listen to my Podcasts and other music without carrying CD's in my car.

Pros: Nice size display with optional connections for back up camera. Has a mic and USB cable for connecting USB drives and smartphones for iOS and Android via Bluetooth, Mirror Link or Apple Car Play.

Awesome radio! Still figuring out all the features but I am loving it so far. Touch screen is the best I have seen on a head unit, its very responsive and the colors are excellent. Every now and then the unit will freeze, whether its on the start up or switching between modes. It is exactly what I expected at this price.

Pros: Great sound, insane how much the stock stereo was holding back the speakers CarPlay is the best The display is the perfect size, has fantastic colors, and is very responsive unlike comparable units Best value by far

Cons: A lot of different modes, it'd be cool to be able to access all features from one adapter rather than have to plug and unplug to switch from AppRadio and CarPlay. Freezes on startup from time to time

    Good - At First

J from Prospect Heights, IL on 5/8/2017

This head unit was great for the initial period of ownership. Rarely any issues until about 9 months after installing it. Software updates seemed to progressively make the CarPlay system worse and incompatibility became a continuous "feature." After about 2 years of ownership BOTH of the USB ports on this device failed. Pioneer refused to repair the unit since it was no longer under warranty and wanted too much money to fix it. I don't feel like 2 years of ownership is a reasonable expectation for complete degradation of the device's functionality nor is the requirement to submit to payment of more than half of the device's retail value to have it repaired. Especially not for components that couldn't cost Pioneer anything more than pennies. Pioneer has lost all credibility. Certainly would not recommend this or any other audio component of theirs based solely on abysmal customer service.

    Pros: Decent design and interface

Cons: failing components, poor functionality after updates, inconsistent performance, poor customer service, limited warranty

This is my second vehicle that I will now have CarPlay in. Honestly it is really the only feature outside of the backup camera that I use on this radio. CarPlay is something that you love or hate, but shouldn't effect the rating of the radio. The reason for the 4 stars...the radio freezes up every once in a while for no real reason.

So I have had my radio for two days, I am totally in love with this radio. I do not know what I was waiting for, I should have got this radio months ago! The ease of having every song at your finger tips is a dream come true! I am a iPhone user and love the CarPlay feature, and even though the rest of the radio is nice I have not really had time to explore the rest of the radio but will update it as I explore. But right now I am kind of in love with CarPlay so it may be a while. I have officially thrown away all my CD (that stone age method of listen to music) and am now a AppRadio user and I AM NEVER LOOKING BACK! Thank you Cruthchfield for an awesome price! Thank you Pioneer for a great product! You have officially started my Summer off to a great start!

Pros: 1. CarPlay, CarPlay, CarPlay. 2. The sleek design is refreshing, I wanted something that looked factory in my car and the framework of the AppRadio fits right in like it was made that way. 3. Did I mention CarPlay yet? 4. The pricing at Cruthfield cannot be beat! Seriously I tried, there is not a better price out there! 5. The screen is very responsive 6. The use of Siri is excellent! CarPlay Functionality is Awesome

Rich from Scotch Plains, NJ on 5/1/2017

    2011 BMW 3 Series
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My primary purpose for choosing this radio was for CarPlay, and it works nearly like Apple designed it. Swiping, gestures, Siri all work great and help to keep focus on the driving. I picked Pioneer APPRadio because of previous positive experience with Pioneer HUs. The real negative of this product is the actual APPRadio. In order to use apps that are not CarPlay compatible, such as WAZE, CarPlay must be disabled and the cabling scheme is different for connectivity. This makes using APPRadio and CarPlay functionalities simultaneously impractical. Short of designing a custom A/B switch for cable IO and some sort of background macro, I'd say it's a lost cause. This incompatibility is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. If it were CarPlay only, I'd give this HU a 5 Star. Fortunately for me, Apple Maps works well enough, and the unit satisfies all of my needs for music, phone, text, and backup camera. Other pluses - the microphone works WAY better than most I've used, and eclipses the stock BMW microphone by a large margin. The GPS antenna pulls a great signal, even mounted inside next to the windshield. FWIW, car is a 2011 BMW 328iXdrive.

Pros: -CarPlay - Large, bright screen - Reasonably quick boot up time - Lots of AV in/out options

Cons: AppRadio functionality severely lacking, both in software and cabling needs (with respect to concurrent use with CarPlay)

The "radio" in my 2004 was hardly working. It still had a cassette player. I replaced it with this sound system. I was going to get a new van, but I'm going to keep because I like the system that much.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

CarPlay, Bluetooth... not $600+. There are a lot of reasons to pick this deck. Once I knew it handled iPhone 7, I knew there was one remaining test. How did the screen feel? So I went to a local CarToys where the sales team were too occupied with a young woman and went to the back to touch the various screens. This vs other products around similar price ranges. I have to admit, this has one of the most responsive screens I've touched. Like a cell phone. While the others, press and push. Hear that wonderful plastic squeak. Skip forward a bit, and once it was hooked up to my amps I started it up. I love this deck! The only two things I wish were improved are the outputs to the amps are at a pretty high db, so it's loud at low volume numbers (on the deck - had to do some tweaking with everything to minimal it). And the other is a slow start up. Not super slow, but a few seconds longer than when the car turns on.

Pros: Crisp sound, great EQ, super responsive screen, works on iPhone 7, and has plenty of connections.

Cons: High db output to amps above normal and the normal "wish it had" aspects to CarPlay (not this deck, just in general).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this radio and received it on the date as scheduled, four days from order to sitting in my shop. The instructions for installation are clear and concise. The only challenge I had was finding a wire inside the cab for the reverse trigger to connect the purple/white wire to so the backup camera is automatically activated. My 1999 Chevy K1500 does not have a trailer light harness under the hood like the 2001 models. I called Crutchfield tech support and they directed me to two sources for the reverse trigger, one under the hood and one in the cab. I elected to use the one in the cab, light green wire from the inside rearview mirror and splice/solder into it and run a wire to the purple/white backup camera wire. Minimum modification is required to the dash panel for installing this double din radio in a 1.5 din slot. The wiring harness and face plate for the radio work great. I'd read many double din installs in these 1.5 din trucks and I did not have to move the HVAC control, which was a concern.

    Pros: Looks great. Sounds great.

Cons: Pioneer's AUX output is different from most AUX. The base of the AUX plug wire must be the video and not ground. You must be cautious in selecting Video/Left/Right RCA Plugs, else the Right channel and the video channel will be reversed.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this new head unit to replace my factory double din Bose unit for my 2003 Mazda Miata SE. Have not installed a radio in probably 30 years so was initially reluctant to purchase online and then self install, however the shear number of Crutchfield customers who have done it themselves and the support guarantee gave me the confidence to purchase and attempt the automotive surgery myself. The install kit was deeply discounted (just needed the basic install kit) and then picked up the wire trimming tool (highly recommended) and then proceeded to get up early on Saturday morning and begin the process. The radio release tools (from Crutchfield) did not seem to fit, but luckily I had a set that I had already purchased from another online auction site which worked perfect and the factory radio was released and quickly disconnected. Quick word of advice - layout all of the Crutchfield components on your work area so that you know what you are working with and read the directions first to eliminate any unnecessary drama or incidents. I used the install kit wiring connector to connect the Pioneer head unit wiring setup to the factory connection which made things much easier, then was able to fish (by hand) the phone mic through my dash so it could be mounted on my steering column, hooked up the mic, USB and antenna powered up the unit. I had a couple of calls with Crutchfield tech support to help work out a couple gremlins but they were awesome and everything works great!

Pros: clean modern unit, pretty easy to use and navigate just like my iPhone, CarPlay works great, great sound and build quality

I haven't purchased a car stereo in about 6-7 years, but I always go with Pioneer. The last deck I purchased was prior to the Bluetooth capability, so this is a game-changer. I like the iPhone connectivity, but, it was quite confusing getting everything hooked up. I was going to skip the GPS, but that is what drives your time/date on the main screen so isn't really an option to skip. Also, there was an extra pigtail for an add-on which leaves extra wires not being used, which adds to confusion during the install. Overall, it's a great deck, and is surprisingly fast when using Siri for your iPhone. It's just a little more confusing and intense of an install compared to the older stuff I'm used to.

Pros: Apple CarPlay, sound, feel, customizable colors/backgrounds

Cons: Installation manual, lack of remote

I like this system overall, and dig the CarPlay integration. Just a couple things that I think are not clear (and should be noted before you purchase: 1) the video out "screen mirroring" the option is somewhat of a misnomer. I thought that it would be really cool to have the rear seat show the same things that are displayed on the head unit. I imagined streaming Netflix from my phone and watching from the back seat. I also thought it would be neat for my rear seat passengers to see the map/navigation when we are on a road trip. Unfortunately (from what I can tell), the unit DOES NOT share anything with the rear screen except the analog video and aux inputs. 2) It is a not simple to switch between CarPlay and app radio. It requires hooking up additional cables, selecting different input/phone configuration options, and restarting the unit... I was aware that I would need a lighting to hdmi adapter (made by Apple) to make app radio work for video streaming to the head unit. But the inability to switch between the CarPlay and app radio apps easily is disappointing. I do think this is something that pioneer should really improve. Not to mention that seems like a clunky set up to require an adapter and two cables just to get full functionality. My guess is that the design is an adaptation of the system which was designed to work with older Apple 30-pin connectors (which carried an analog video signal). I hope that Pioneer will improve these shortcomings on their future model

Pros: CarPlay, nice touchscreen, easy to use.

This radio was awesome as soon as I hooked it up. Boots up as quick as any stock touchscreen I've played with...has the option to create your own boot screen...and your own background image for different screens you might be in. Carplay is FLAWLESS so far. I was expecting a few bugs here and there, some lagging, I'm just very pleased with this unit. The customization option the unit has to offer makes me vote it 5 stars. The bluetooth streaming is so clear and sounds extremely well. $400 price tag was tough to swallow but so far its worth every penny. And as I was raised...buy once cry once. Spend the extra money and grab this guy.

Pros: ability to change splash and background screen images. CarPlay crystal clear bluetooth HDMI input iPhone and Android integration to make both parties happy

I love everything this head unit has to offer. CarPlay works so well, and seamlessly continues calls when either plugging into the car or unplugging and leaving the car. Also CarPlay doesn't lock your phone screen so you can still pull up audio from unsupported apps. Spotify has been a little glitchy and won't play if I have been playing podcasts. It is slightly annoying because the only solution I have found is to go into my phone and hit play from the Spotify app. I also love the fact that you can turn the display off when you are driving at night so you aren't blinded.

Pros: Seamless call transitions Ability to turn display off with radio still working Overall CarPlay functionality

Connecting an iPhone 6 to the unit at the latest iOS software version by USB. Appradio is at firmware version 1.13. Apple Carplay utilizes the music app on the phone as the library source so by default shows ALL of your purchases regardless of what is actually synced to the phone. The way around this is to use playlists but in the end there is no way to browse your downloaded music by artists, albums, or songs. I realize this is a Apple problem not Pioneer but it factors into the Appradio experience. Then I ALWAYS have to disconnect/reconnect the phone or else, more often than not, the unit will get some kind of connection error when restarting. So even if I just stop for gas or coffee I can't just leave my phone connected, I have to disconnect and reconnect it after starting the engine and waiting a moment for Appradio to initialize. This problem happened with both the iPhone and a 7th gen iPod Nano. I'm now forced to reconnect my device at least 2-3 times a day When a iPhone or iPod is connected by USB, the Appradio disables Bluetooth audio streaming and you the message on screen "Bluetooth audio service unavailable, please disconnect all cable connection to enable it". So it's not a glitch it's by design -- but the Bluetooth audio connection for the phone still works there is just no "audio service"?!? Also it would be nice to have a physical volume control. Aside from all this the unit has a very real cool factor and is very easy

Pros: Easy to set up and customize EQ and crossovers Responsive touch screen Apple CarPlay "cool factor"

Can customize colors on screen to match lights on your dash. Makes stock speakers even sound better. Installed with Crux SWC interface. Solder all connections to make sure they last. If you haven't done before -- look it up on the online video website. Only dislike at this point is issues with steering wheel control. Crux says that up and down on steering wheel is going to be up and down on presets in radio mode. Actually on this unit it ends up being up and down TUNE. Not very useful. Spoke to Crutchfield technical support -- they said it is what the head unit is set to do. Not sure if that is the case or not. Tried to contact Crux customer support they never responded. However, this is not a deal breaker. Still love the unit.

Installed Pioneer App Radio in 2008 Toyota Tacoma. First time I've tackled a complex radio install. I consider myself moderately skilled and it took 4 plus hours to complete (plus visiting several helpful YouTube websites). The Pioneer unit and Apple CarPlay are pretty awesome; there could be improvements to the Pioneer App. System boots up pretty fast - only a few seconds delay. Recognizes my iPhone WiFi instantly. The Metra dash unit (silver) fits almost perfectly but it's somewhat brighter silver than existing one. I wired it with a relay (lots of YouTube videos on how to do this) so I could have full access to the GPS and video (although I would never watch video while driving). Installing the rearview camera License plate version) was too daunting for me - too many wires that I couldn't figure out where they connected. Crawling under the truck to run the video cable was also not something I wanted to do. Had it done at a local audio shop and it works perfectly. Thank you Crutchfield for excellent technical support.

Pros: easy to operate, works flawlessly, fast boot up

Cons: Pioneer App is not good - needs update

Anyways, my wife just got off work and started the car to make her drive home. An error on the screen appeared. It read Software Error- Contact your Pioneer Dealer or Service Center. Installation was fairly simple. Wiring diagram was comprehensive, only problem was that there were a few details left out. First was that if you want to use APPRADIO features, you need to do a couple of things: 1. You need to purchase and APPLE DVAdapter to connect your lightning cable and HDMI cable. AppRadio only works with the HDMI cable installed/connected. The lightning cable only provides power for charging your phone, otherwise it can't be used in the configuration for Apple Carplay (USB not supported). You have to unplug the USB from the DVI (or have a second one connected to USB 1 port and plug your phone in to the lightning cable directly to use Carplay). Carplay has an AppRadio APP, that doesn't function because you have to have the HDMI cable connected for this app to work. 2. In order to use AppRadio/HDMI video, you have to have the Parking Wire connected to your Vehicles Parking System. Over all I really like the radio. But again, it's not as easy as Plug-n-Play. BTW I purchased my additional cables for a decent price. Bottom line shop around and view as many install/reviews as possible before attempting to install. The future of car audio

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced stock 2000 Tacoma stock radio. Since,my music is managed in Apple's iCloud, CarPlay made sense for me. I like this product for many reasons. It is inexpensive compared to other CarPlay radios, it fit easily into my vehicle, the operating environment if familiar since it is Apple, and perhaps best of all the icons and font is large and easy to read and select. Cruchfield made purchase easy and I loved having the installation manual emailed to me prior to the arrival of the radio.

Pros: Sensitive touch screen. Apple CarPlay. Since Apple and Android have similar features for car audio I can't imagine buying a new car without this option. I don't want to spend another minute learning a car's audio/GPS unique user interface.

Cons: Bit slow to respond, especially using Siri. Phone alone is fast, so performance is either CarPlay interface or radio.

I went from a dealer 6-disc changer to the App Radio 4, and love it! The modes take a little getting used to, but I had it all figured out in less than an hour. The sound is great with my Bose speakers and I LOVE having CarPlay and being able to stream music from Apple Music, Amazon Music , or my iPhone library. Having Siri hands-free is really nice, too, especially in CA with the new laws.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The AppRadio itself is awesome! I would give it five stars but I am a little disappointed in the install kit for my 2014 Tacoma. I had five plugs going to my stock radio & am unable to hook up three of them, one of which was my in-dash USB port & one I assume was my stock BT Mic. This was also a very, very, tight fit & I am concerned with the lack of air flow to the system. The plastic mounting brackets that replaced the stock metal ones (I could not re-use) are very flimsy & had to reposition & re-assemble the dash four times before the fit was acceptable. I don't think anyone at Cruchfield has installed one of these in a Tacoma...... Now that I have it installed and paired with Polk 5-1/2" in the doors & Kicker 6x9 behind the seats, it sounds great and well worth the money. BT phone is very clear & having the map app is a big plus.

Pros: Looks great in my truck. Sounds even better. Love the equalizer options & color options.

Cons: Install kit for Tacoma is a two star at best. USB & HDMI should come with in-dash kits.

The internal amp sounds great, and is adequate, even though it's only rated at 15 watts. The lawyers overruled the engineers with the Carplay splash screen that has all of the yada yada yada about not to watch the video while driving. Very annoying. 135 page user manual is thorough. Lots of connectivity options. The Pioneer non Carplay user interface is dated, butt Functional.

Only thing that would improve it would be if Pioneer does an update so android aouto works with this because their app raido mode won't work with new Samsung Galaxy devices and mirror link has some quirks. Had this radio installed in my 2007 Subaru Impreza back in May 2016. Even though I did NOT install the radio myself, it turned out pretty great. Had a factory 6 disc in-dash MP3 CD player that was outdated. I don't have CDs anymore so my friend referred me to this site and purchase this radio.

Pros: Great picture, easy to use, and perfect with today's technology.

Cons: Most of my radio stations are all static compared to my stock OEM 6 disc in-dash factory radio. So getting the local traffic news during rush hour is very difficult when you can't hear anything but static.

Crutchfield response on 9/13/2016 One of our Tech Support Advisors, Wayne, reached out to this customer, letting him know that the likely reason for the poor radio reception is the blue/white wire connection on his new Pioneer car stereo. His Subaru includes a powered antenna, and this wire needs to be connected to the adapter's corresponding blue wire for his vehicle to activate this antenna's amplifier for better reception.

Installed this unit in my 2001 Miata. Had to make one phone call to Crutchfield's Support Department to get the pin-out for power to my Bose system and after that, the unit has performed spectacularly. I purchased it for Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay and everything works beyond expectations. I can make and receive calls with my top down going 65 mph on the highway with clarity, receive and send texts with Siri's help with little issues (Siri's mainly), Apple Maps, Pandora, iHeart Radio, my music library, all within touch. No more fumbling with my iPhone and using a radio transmitter for audio. I then added a back-up camera (not really needed in the MIata) a week later, and it too works seamlessly. Great for backing out of parking spaces, as my car is so low to the ground, I can't see around other cars. I highly recommend this product for anyone who has an older car that they cherish.

Pros: Ease of installation - Crutchfield's website recommended all additional items needed for installation and they were 100% correct. Installed with one phone call in less than 2 hours.

Cons: Display is bright at night, but when running Apple CarPlay, my iPhone dims it somewhat. I couldn't find the dimmer lead to my dash, but am not sure I would hook that up anyway, as I feel the need to be able to see the speedometer and tach at night.

Very happy with this radio, so far. I staled in a 2003 Ford F-150. This was a more complicated install that involved sub dash modifications. Crutchfield support was very helpful in assisting with the installation and modifications. Now that it is installed, it's a remarkable improvement over the stock AM/FM/cassette/CD unit that I replaced. Purchased for CarPlay functionality and am very happy with it. CarPlay interface, and pioneer appradio interface are very user friendly. Sound performance with stock speakers is very good and a big improvement over stock unit. Been using it about 2 weeks now and very pleased to have ability to make hands free calls and have access to music and podcasts over car speakers!

Android Users Beware (and the screen is delaminating!!)

Anonymous from Madison, AL on 6/24/2016

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased my AppRadio 4 from Crutchfield in the Fall of 2015. I have an iPhone as my work phone and for the most part, the AppRadio does a great job with CarPlay. I have no complaints there. The AppRadio also sounds amazing. Unfortunately, that's where the good news ends. My personal phone is a Google Nexus 6 and it doesn't support Mirrorlink, nor does it have HDMI out. The Android support for AppRadio4 is extremely disappointing. I mean, no support for Android Auto!?! Come on Pioneer! What has me the most disgusted with this unit however is that digitizer is delaminating from the glass on the tough screen and it is simply a train wreck to look it. Of course it is out of warranty so I either pay a lot of money to have it replaced or I can risk fixing it myself. Oh but wait, I cannot even do that because the part is not available right now. This has been the most disappointing waste of money I can ever recall spending. No more Pioneer products for me. No Thanks!!

Pros: Works well with my iPhone and CarPlay. Sounds very nice

Cons: Minimal Android support including (inexplicably!!) no support for Android Auto. Build quality is poor as the screen is allowing dust under the glass and the digitizer is delaminating.

Shopping for car stereos can be difficult because there are so many options! I previously had a pioneer x2700 installed in my car and after a year the unit would randomly turn off and on, buttons would freeze and then wouldn't turn on at all if temperature outside was lower than 68 degrees. I knew my next purchase would still be a pioneer even though I had a bad experience with my first, because of the quality and the overall look that pioneer offers. I am SO glad I went with this one. I am an iPhone user and having Apple CarPlay has been great! Love that Spotify shows up on my unit, the use of Siri is much much better. Phone calls sound much better. Another thing that I like is the sleekness off the screen. The overall look is very crisp and clear and can I tell you how much I love that I can turn off the annoying beep of pressing any buttons?! Anyway. Ramble done. Very happy with this purchase and I would highly recommend!!

Pros: Apple CarPlay, appearance, Spotify, crisper clearer phone calls.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went back to driving my old Honda after turning in a leased car. I need hands free calling, which is not available in the vehicle, so I decided to upgrade the factory head unit for that purpose. Now, since I was going to need to change out the whole center stack in the Honda, since that is the issue with that car, I figured I would go with a double DIN unit with Apple CarPlay. The Pioneer fits the bill perfectly. I do not need a CD or DVD player. The unit works flawlessly. I updated it to the latest firmware quite easily. The wiring supplied by Crutchfield, along with the instructions, replacement dash kit, Metra steering wheel controls, are all terrific. Everything wired up properly. If installing in the Honda like I did, it is a good idea to go with the Metra steering wheel control. The reason is that the harness supplied by Metra already has the proper splicing to just plug and play with that unit. Very nice. And, you can remap or allow for multiple functions with one button. Good thing because this steering wheel is before the days of voice activation. I have the mode button set up to go to voice activation with a long push. The unit itself works flawlessly. It boots quickly, unlike perhaps older versions. The software interface is a bit clunky, but works well. The handsfree calling with bluetooth is flawless. So is the bluetooth audio with my iPhone. Apple CarPlay is a bonus, and is fun to use. It has its limitations, but that is no fault of the Pioneer

Pros: Fast bootup, excellent sound quality, excellent bluetooth connectivity

Cons: Unit software interface could use some updating to be a bit less clunky, and more modern.

Huge upgrade to my 2008 Porsche Boxster. Porsches can be tricky to upgrade as the RCA output of aftermarket stereos won't communicate with the fiber optic network used by the Bose amp and speakers. However, I found a device called the MOST-HUR that converts the signal properly. Took a few attempts to get all the wires connected properly but now it's working beautifully, and the trim surround from Crutchfield looks great and makes it look like a very clean factory install. The CarPlay functionality is fantastic--way better than the stock systems available in most modern cars. Very intuitive.

    Great Unit

HP from ventnor city, NJ on 2/27/2016

I have this installed in my 2013 Tacoma, NON JBL system. After much adieu, replacing blown door speakers, adding a 5 channel amp and sub/custom box I couldn't get the sound I desired from the factory head unit. I tried using line output converters because I didn't want to lose that Factory look and the steering wheel controls. I got nothing but unwanted noise coming from the factory head unit and there was a constant hiss in the speakers that no matter what I tried, wouldn't go away. After much research I went with the Pioneer. The specs compared to similar brands didn't compare and a lot of the other companies Kenwood, Alpine, Etc seemed to have cheesy push buttons and rotary knobs that were flimsy. As an audiophile from the car stereo scene from the 90's I thought that they just didn't make them like they used to anymore. The Pioneer proved me wrong. It is a solid build and sounds fantastic. The AUTO EQ is AMAZING and does all of the work for you. Set everything up, BUY THE AUTO EQ, hit the start button and it measured the acoustical environment of YOUR vehicle and adjusts the EQ accordingly. Forget about your CD's, you don't need a CD player. I have hundreds of CDS. I just used windows media player to RIP them to files and I can save all of them to a USB drive that plugs right into the radio. That's right, all of your CD'S on a single USB drive. I used USB #1 for my cell connection (Apple Car Play) and USB #2 for the USB drive with all of my CD's on it.

Pros: Excellent build quality and sound quality.

Cons: I'm a pretty particular person, not afraid to complain. My only complaint about this unit is that if you are controlling the volume the indicator and MUTE button pop up on the screen. When this happens the MUTE button covers the APPLE Home button. They should raise this home button up more toward the center of the screen in a future update.

    Great, but

KevM from Magnolia, TX on 2/25/2016

I found that it was not as intuitive as I thought it would be. The read back for the text messages, especially group text messages, is clunky and sad. This is a great head unit. It connects flawlessly to my iPhone 6S. I like how Siri is integrated into it, basically my phone is now on my car, which is a huge upgrade on my 08 350Z. It makes the car look a lot newer inside. And it makes the stock speakers sound much cleaner as well. Most importantly, when I started shopping around, I wanted something that looks like it belongs. I typically am not a fan of aftermarket radios, but since my OEM broke, my hand was forced. This head unit looks great in the car. It looks like it came with the car, and that along with the Carplay sold me. I typically use Pandora and it has been great so far. This is my second Pioneer radio and they will be the only aftermarket radio I will buy in the future. Amazing quality.

Great head unit. Bluetooth works great. Carplay works great. Integration of steering wheel mounted controls is hit and miss. The buttons that used to be able to cycle through station presets is not a tuner instead, so I now have to physically touch the screen to change radio stations. So I now have to take my eyes off the road to see what button I am touching. Other than that, this head unit works great and was a super-duper upgrade for my car.

Pros: Nice screen, great sound quality over stock head unit. Carplay is great. Bluetooth is great.

Cons: Steering wheel mounted controls no longer work as desired. Takes a while to learn how to use the head unit and the manual is non-existent.

I wish you could control the back up camera image settings, as contrast, exposure, color, etc... also the screen could be bigger, as the smooth face look is awesome but I wish it took up all the console space and didn't have such a large deck kit boarder.

Great value - this pretty little head unit consolidates everything I need: radio, navi, streaming music, USB music files. I do not think I will miss a CD deck at all. The graphic EQ is very easy to use, and combined with a pink noise MP3 on a USB drive, and a $3 spectrum analyzer app on my phone, I tuned the car in under 10 minutes. I'm sure it's not as dialed in as could be done by a pro, but it sounds terrific and was incredibly easy to do just in my driveway. CarPlay works great, I just plugged by iPhone 5S in and everything I tried (maps, Pandora, phone) worked right away. Just about everything you need is in the box, including a mic (I mounted mind just behind the steering wheel) and a GPS antenna. Crutchfield, of course, provided the harness adapter and trim pieces to fill out the dash opening. I was a little nervous because the stock Toyota Highlander had a third connector, I was worried there had been a mistake. But I left it disconnected and everything works fine.

Pros: CarPlay. Full featured. Great price.

Cons: Not really Pioneer's fault, but the trim adapters for my Toyota dash opening were fiddly to get in place.

With the Crutchfield supplied harness, installation was easy. Carplay is by no means perfect and has its flaws however when it is working I'm amazed at how much easier it makes the process. The radio functions as expected as well as the USB support. I have been impressed with the Bluetooth functionality as compared to other receivers that I have had. Other than having a few issues getting the firmware update to load (which were due to USB stick formatting) everything has worked as advertised. One caution - you will have to have the parking brake switch wired or you will not be able to do a firmware update.

Pros: Car-play functionality Large, easy to read display

Cons: As mentioned by other reviewers the display is very bright at night You *have* to have the parking brake switch wired in able to do firmware updates Firmware updates can be tricky if the USB stick is not formatted correctly.

No bugs, easy interface with CarPlay, father couldn't have been happier. The AppRadio mode isn't so userfriendly and does require you to unplug from the lightning cable in USB 1 into the HDMI/lightening cable adapter (sold separately). That part was disappointing, but since this will be used mostly for CarPlay, it wasn't a big deal. Still an awesome unit and I'd highly recommend to anyone.

This receiver is good when not connected to your iPhone, it is great when it is. It is an intuitive extension of your phone and has a clean and familiar design. I used the steering wheel control module to make sure the steering wheel controls in my wife's Honda Pilot would work and with the included instructions it was easy.

Pros: Intuitive, sharp display, easy touch screen

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit exceeded my expectations as far as function and design go. There are some minor quirks, but first let me share some answers To questions I had, but couldn't find before purchasing/running the unit. - Pandora now works on CarPlay. This was huge for me, and it works great. - I have USB1 as a straight lightning cable for CarPlay. USB2 plugs into the apple Hemingway adapter I bought, and connects with the Hemingway cable, so I can mirror my phone. It will work great on road trips, and I did this for when I expand to headrest monitors. The only down side is it is a little quirky, and when you close videos/apps, take your time or you will lock the unit. Not a real frequent occurrence, so I can over look it. Voice recognition with Siri is pretty well done, but awkward at first. The timing for voice command is different with car play than on just your phone. The sound quality is great. I have it pair with some Rockford 5.25 2 ways in front, and Rockford 6x9 2 ways in rear. Crisp, clear. The bass doesn't start to come in until about 15, but I usually drive with it turned to 18-21 for volume. Debating if I even need a sub. It fit in my Buick Century quite well, the Metra kit made it look darn near factory, I think that should cover everything.

Pros: CarPlay works great, and is now pandora compatible. Looks/sounds great.

Cons: CarPlay Siri is so wing to get used too, hdmi input can be touchy. Both of which aren't as bad as they read,

I got this unit specifically for the Car Play functionality and it works great. Though some of the apps have issues like the map not maintaining your settings and defaulting back to its default display, and not picking up where I leave off in Pandora. Integration is great, works well in my Taco with the steering wheel controls.

Pros: Good screen size, Siri integration, excellent phone, text, and email integration

Cons: Doesn't fit as tightly with the faceplate, small gaps.

    Easy install, works great !

Storm from Montreal, QC on 11/6/2015

One thing I was worried about before buying the unit is some of the reviewers said they didn't have the dimming feature at night. I think this is the orange wire, you have to connect it to orange with the white stripe. I have the dimming feature and it is fully adjustable. Both for day and night time. Easy install in my old Honda CR-V. What took me the longest was to solder the connecters and shrink wrap all the solder. Hey Siri works great. I think a lot of the reviewers would benefit from RTFM. I see nothing wrong with this unit. Sounds great even on stock speakers. Crutchfield installation sheet is spot-on took me less than an hour to install after my initial soldering of the harness. My unit is on firmware 1.08, now 1.09 is out, but I'm not sure I will upgrade if I have no issue like I have right now.

Pros: Sounds great on stock speakers. Easy to use. Connect the orange wire for the dimming feature. The green ONE you should figure it out (Doesn't take a genius) hold down the middle button to shut-off the unit and RTFM !

The one thing that I wish was that there was a dim-setting, as driving with the panel on at night can be very distracting...... Additionally, you are unable to move around the apps in car play mode to sync to that of your phone.

I've had this stereo for awhile now.. Around 4 months and I really love this stereo. The carplay is amazing. The ability to fine tune your music with the eq band is amazing. From replacing a stock radio in an 06 trailblazer, it is 100x better. There are obviously a few bugs where it has occasionally froze and i had to unplug and replug my phone back in and sometimes when i plug my phone in when i first go in my car the music won't always play but i think that mostly has to do with maybe a dirty connect with the lightning cable im using. The sound quality is incredible. Installation was little over an hour and wasn't too complicated. Huge upgrade in my opinion and overall a great purchase and i would definitely recommend and buy again.

Pros: Responsive touch screen, good sound quality, apple carplay(duh)

Cons: Few bugs and screen is crazy bright at night,

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It feels cheap and plasticy and there are no tactile buttons or knobs. That feeling goes away quick once it's installed. Wish there was something solid at least for volume. What makes up for this is the captive touch screen that is as responsive as any smart phone. CarPlay works ok. Everything is easy to find. If you have a mic hooked up and Hey Siri enabled on your phone you won't have to push a single button to navigate, make calls or send messages. Entertainment wise it is severely limited. No Pandora or Slacker through CP. When apple music is playing, the album art is obscured and opaque in the background with only the album info in front. It would be nice to see an actual album cover. The good news is that CP only requires a USB connection. I want to explore the actual App Radio functions. For that I need a USB, an adapter and an HDMI cable for iPhones. All told it's $100 extra. What's surprising is that Pandora still shows up on the App Radio with only a USB cable. Warning though, make sure you have all your music apps set up the way you like on your phone. There's no alterations on the run. No creating stations an no looking for something that isn't already loaded. Personally, I prefer the App Radio display over Car Play. There's actual album covers and neat background animation. I will probably shell out for cables. The worst thing though is that I haven't found a way to shut this thing off unless my car is. Sound quality is also excellent.

Pros: Looks sort of cheap. No buttons or knobs. Car Play is limited. Need extra cables to use actual App Radio

Cons: Big responsive touch screen, Hands free calling, messaging and navigation. Sound Quality.

Too expensive for the features that are included - it's not "future-proof" as it is not compatible with Apple's wireless CarPlay. Hopefully an accessory will be released that will allow for this function, but that will probably be overpriced, too. It looks cool in the car but the display is too bright at night. In radio mode, it displays the song title/artist/station info in a very small portion of the screen (leaving much of it unused) and is basically useless. The Bluetooth takes way too long to connect; I have tried several different Bluetooth devices and all of them took almost 30 seconds to connect. This is shameful compared to the less than 10 seconds my previous head unit took to connect to Bluetooth devices.

Pros: Looks cool, works better than my stock stereo (not saying much)

I can't find many apps that will mirror to the radio. And you can't listen to the radio while a nav app is running. If you want a GPS enables radio, get a GPS enabled radio. Don't try to use this radio and your phone with Waze or Google maps and think that is going to be as good as a GPS radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like this head unit. The hands-free call quality is excellent, and the sound quality is great despite having 30% less power than my old JVC unit. I installed a micro bypass and an ASWC-1 steering wheel control. I was able to map long presses of my steering wheel's SEEK +/- keys to "ON HOOK" and "OFF HOOK", so now I can answer calls without touching the radio. I also mapped a long press of my MODE key to "Push to Talk", which brings up Siri. This is really nice, since Siri support is one of the coolest things about this radio. I can press the button, wait for the beep and say "Shuffle Bob Dylan". No more fumbling with my iPhone! CarPlay works well with IOS9 beta. This unit's main competitor is Alpine's ILX-007, which lacks media playback support and Bluetooth. BT is nice for letting your friends connect and play their music, while you continue to use your iPhone for navigation and handsfree calling. I also like knowing that if my data plan is running low, I can use my trusty old 240GB iPod for music - not so with the ILX-007. The capacitive touchscreen improves the CarPlay experience a lot - for example, I can move the map by dragging. My main complaint is Pioneer's song information layout. The song title and genre get about 25% of the screen width, so I have to wait for them to scroll. I would much rather NOT have the genre displayed, and give the whole space to the song title. OTOH, they do display the album art, which CarPlay failed to do.

Pros: Capacitive touchscreen, low cost, ease of use and installation.

    Cons: No HD Radio

Difficult install in a 2011 Mini, but worth it. Mounted the Mini's factory CD player behind the round speedometer to keep Mini's computer display active. Connected new head unit outs to Mini's amp AUX in to use factory HK amp. Added steering controls, backup camera and brake-on simulator. Made both smartphone connections adding accessible USB female extension cables in case lightning cables ever wear and fail. Added a third female USB for USB-2 and plugged in a 128GB thumb drive full of tunes - which is fully indexed for easy/fast browsing by the USB2 feature on the head unit. Also added female USB ports for original Mini stereo and one connected to the steering wheel control for reprogramming if ever needed. Latest firmware works great. I usually use Carplay, but occassionally use the AppRadio connector to use Waze or play videos. Hopefully Apple will add more apps to Carplay compatibility. Awesome system. Very difficult install in a Mini.

Cons: Cable change and system setting change required if you switch from Carplay to AppRadio or back.

This is a quality head unit with many of the functionalities of the more expensive GPS receivers. By using an iPhone's data and GPS data through CarPlay, it functions just as well as a head unit costing hundreds more. Obviously this unit is only worth it for iOS users but I haven't checked out the AppRadio features. CarPlay has its glitches, but should be getting even better with the upcoming release of iOS 9. One other note: you must connect the included GPS antenna for the unit to set the correct time. I did not install the antenna, I merely connected it long enough to set the time and removed it before completing the install. Otherwise, the antenna is mostly obselete. Overall, good unit, easy install, MasterSheet from Crutchfield was very helpful.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Car: 2003 Toyota 4Runner with JBL and RDS Phone: iPhone 5s with iOS 8.4 This was my third install of a Crutchfield radio and by far the most difficult. Mostly this was because the 4Runner requires removing the gear shift trim panel, the console trim, the driver's knee panel and the climate control panel before you can remove the receiver trim panel. The wiring adapter hook up was a little confusing but two quick calls to Crutchfield cleared that up. Otherwise the install was smooth if a little time consuming. Some things you should know: If you want to use CarPlay, you must attach the supplied USB cable to USB 1. This is also the USB interface used to update the firmware if needed. If you want to use AppRadio you must attach your HDMI cable (not supplied) and then also connect that to Lightning Digital AV Adapter that you must purchase from Apple (not included). There is a Parking Brake sensor wire that must be connected to the parking brake switch. This is to prevent you from watching videos from the head unit while driving. It is also required for updating the firmware (which was not required as I already had the latest version out of the box). There are several YouTube videos describing how to bypass this but it will void your warranty. Since I did not have the required cables for AppRadio, I set the unit up for CarPlay and am very happy with it. In combination with Siri it is very easy to use and mostly hands-off allowing better attention on driving.

    Pros: CarPlay

Cons: Missing cables required for AppRadio

Since I didn't get the email confirmation I called to get the tracking number. I was given the incorrect tracking number so I had to call back. Then I installed the unit and the wiring harness adapter sent for my vehicle did not work properly and caused very poor sound output. It would pop, sometime not work and had static. One of the harnesses that is suppose to fit my vehicle fit but would not lock in with my factory harness so it came loose. I called tech support to find out what happened. The tech asked if I read the instructions about having to set my factory radio fader and balance to zero and the volume at 3/4 volume. I told him I did not receive the instructions related to that. He sent me a new wiring harness out which eliminated the sound issues. The one harness still does not lock together with my factory harness so I taped the two together....Ghetto!!! Very poor service all around by Crutchfield. I will not make any further purchases from Crutchfield due to the service.

I love having my incoming notifications read to me via the speakers in the car, and Maps integration is excellent. I did have some initial issues with obtaining the right accessories to retain steering wheel controls, but Crutchfield support was outstanding. It took getting one of the interface modules replaced (which Crutchfield advance shipped to me) and a couple of calls in to their support center, but now everything is working perfectly. Crutchfield support is amazing - I'm so glad I shopped with them and won't go anywhere else in the future.

Pros: CarPlay integration is spot on, works exactly as you'd expect it to with my iPhone 5S. Being able to use the OTA radio and Apple Maps for GPS at the same time is amazing.

The sound quality is good, but if you are looking for a product that works and is easy to use, look elsewhere. Every time I use it I must jump through some hoop to make it work, such as a hard reboot of my phone, killing and restarting apps, or even restarting my truck. Having to fiddle so much to get this thing to work negates the benefit, which is supposed to be a safer user interface while driving. I was excited to find a head unit that could seemingly "do it all" by combining the usefulness of my cell phone's apps directly on the screen, and have the 'Pioneer sound' quality that we've come to love. I'd like to preface the following review, by saying that I'm a fairly knowledgeable individual that works in IT... so using and configuring electronics, in general, come quite easily to me. I've had this unit installed for less than a day, and sadly, it's been been a huge let-down. What's the point of a product called an "Appradio" if you're not actually able to listen to the radio while using, for instance, a navigation app? You heard that right... you can't listen to the radio while using an app / appmode. You must listen to MP3's on your device while using apps. This is an egregious oversight by Pioneer. Surprisingly, they've had 4 units now where, somehow, no one has thought that 'that' might be a good idea. Aside from that, connecting to your phone is like playing the lottery. Enter/Exit the car and turning the system on, sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't, requiring a reboot of the phone or shutting the car off and back on -- cause you know, that's practical. Super frustrating, and a complete loss of my time and, more importantly, my money at the install shop. I now have to pay even more money to replace this unit, that in my opinion, is nothing more than a poorly executed great idea (for the 4th time).

Pros: It's a Pioneer, so when you actually are able to listen to the radio, it sounds good.

Cons: Cannot listen to the radio while using apps... must use the device mp3's. Poorly executed User Interface and in general, switiching between modes is an exercise in patience. Color Gamut / Image Quality of the Screen is poor. Buggy Connectivity to Devices in both AppRadio and MirrorLink (I was not able to get MirrorLink to work on any device)

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded from an App Radio 3 to incorporate the CarPlay feature and overall I'm a little disappointed. Using the iOS 8.1.1 will not work with many previous apps until an upgrade becomes available from Pioneer. The screen is slightly smaller than the 3 and the features just did not justify the premium price. My advice would be to wait till Pioneer gets it figured out then make the purchase if this is the radio you are looking for.

    Pros: CarPlay features

Cons: Overall price for a unit that won't run previous App Radio 3 apps with iOS 8.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this on my Prius 2011. I cannot find a way to get factory backup camera to work with this radio. I lost my backup camera capability. Installing a new one is too much costs. I hope carplay can grow more supports soon.

    Pros: Apple carplay support

Cons: limited amount of Apple carplay support apps. Carplay Siri Features reacts slowly on each conversation. radio is A little bit pricy.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 after its announcement. I needed a replacement radio for my wife's Nisson Versa that supported her iPhone 5S and this fit the bill well. The radio arrived well packaged and a day early! The radio itself is complete with mounting hardware, remote microphone, remote GPS antenna, Pioneer's wiring connector/pigtail, and installation/operator's manual. Crutchfield also supplies an universal car connector pigtail and car radio antenna adaptor...thanks! Installation was fast and easy and I had no issues. The radio connects to the iPhone through the USB port and lightning cable and displays CarPlay on the phone. The radio mimics the key features of the phone and seems to work well. I suspect it will only get better as Apple refines it and Pioneer provides firmware. The biggest issue was the "Hey Siri" Eye's free system. It is a hit and miss with Siri, depending on your signal strength. Most of the time, SIRI fails and I have to hit the SIRI button on the radio or phone. Other than that, the music playlists, contact lists, Spotify, and Map works well. I did have problems with the map not transferring completely at time, only the turn directions. I think this is an Apple Carplay issue, which I hope will be resolve in future updates. The sound quality of the radio is much better than the OEM radio. My wife can easily operate the radio as well as use the all the features of Carplay, so I am happy.

Pros: Easy to install, easy to operate, implements Apple's CarPlay. Crutchfield provides all the necessary plugs and provides excellent support!

Cons: Apple's CarPlay is not quite ready for primetime yet. I am hopeful that Apple will continue to improve the implementation as they do other aspects of their IOS.

If you were waiting for CarPlay, here it is!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We're early adopters, so give it some time to fully bake. Fotunately, it only needs firmware updates to get the latest. You get a lot of functionality with this radio. What you don't get, you really don't need: Sattelite radio, disc-based anything, movies or videos. What you do get is Pandora or Spotify, your iPod music, Apple Navigation with Siri, Bluetooth audio and phone.

Pros: I had to call Crutchfield 4 times and had to email them another 6 more. Each time, they were knowlegable. This free tech support is great. The features are great too, at least compared to my old OEM system. It honestly lengthens the life of my car.

Cons: Bluetooth takes about 30 seconds to start. There is a logon banner when using the lightning cable, that you have to acknowledge each and every time. Why can't I just acknowledge it once, you it remembers? Installation took hours, so if you'd rather not spend the time, check the geek squad. The steering wheel integration adapter was a real pain to install.

Cons: None yet but I just installed it.

    2010 Subaru Legacy
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, Crutchfield technicians in Harrisonburg installed my Pioneer AppRadio 4, so I have no feedback as to the ease of self installation. Second, this unit looks as if it was factory installed by Subaru in my 2010 Legacy. It fits perfectly in my dash. And the coolness factor is definitely high! Third, if you have an iPhone (I have an iPhone 5s) this unit is a perfect fit for your car audio and communication needs. As the literature states it mirrors your phone: contacts, Pandora stations, texts, etc perfectly.

Pros: -Beautiful interface--just like your iPhone -Great sound and ability to customize the sound, even with the stock speakers in my car. There was no need for upgrade of speakers -Streams Pandora really well -Firmware updates via Pioneer's website make for easy upgrades to the unit

Cons: -Occasionally Siri does not read text replies and just repeats your previous sent text. This minor glitch may be a software issue -I wish the Pioneer unit would fade to black when not being used, similar to my iPhone and then wake up with a touch. --Although you can manually adjust the brightness, contrast, and dimmer features it would be nice if the brightness would automatically lower at night. -As with any touch screen device your finger prints will need to be wiped clean occasionally

    Way ahead of the Game

    Christian from Texas on 11/6/2014

Get Ahead of the Nav Game with this unit. Carplay is the future of driving, get in Early. I have a iPhone 6 and unfortunately all the Extra apps do not currently work, i'm sure a firmware update soon will fix that, but ALL the carplay features work, only other app I wanted was Waze, but since Apple maps finally works better, it's not really needed. What's awesome is that with the iPhone integration, I can hit maps and using my calendar, it already has the Destination of my Appointments, Spotify works great, Siri is great, reads out everything to you, just like it would your phone but everything is read to you instead, ask her stock prices, game scores, anything. Had a backup camera installed, my only issue was a local car stereo shop installed it wrong, I called Crutchfield for support, it's amazing how good their tech support is, I can't remember his name now, but the tech knew exactly what was wrong when I had a issue with all music working but not the phone audio, he knew that the speakers were connected wrong without me even telling him how they were connected. Also, Crutchfield knows exactly what you need with the stereo for your car, the right wiring harness, spacers if needed, extra gear like I needed to keep my steering wheel controls. On price, they don't cost more, but they offer soo much more, it's not worth risking buying from someone else. There is a reason this company has been around for soo long, I am most likely going to write a good review for the BBB

Pros: Carplay, Beautiful Screen, looks incredible,

Cons: Felt like that back fan/heatsink combo was getting pretty Hot, make sure no wires are touching it or blockage behind it, I think this thing gets a little hot.

    Excellent CarPlay unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a 2014 BRZ simply because I wanted a CarPlay unit. The installation was quite easy and it the fit is very good. Both the CarPlay and AppRadio are very easy to use with intuitive user interfaces. Audio is is very good with many nice customization controls. Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: CarPlay Easy to use Easy to install

Cons: Takes a bit too long to boot up.

    Great stereo for CarPlay

nitrog from Atlanta, GA on 10/27/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was just using the stereo for the CarPlay interface. It is the perfect solution. Simple interface with touch buttons gives it a modern, sleek look. The interface is also customizable. Customized the button colors as well as the splash screen. As for sound quality. Music sounds great with the factory speakers. Would like to upgrade those next for the full effect. If you really want your SiriusXM radio, you may want to go the next Pioneer model up with CarPlay, this unit does not have built-in SiriusXM. Other than that I can't complain about anything.

Pros: - CarPlay - Customization - Sleek, modern look

    Cons: - No SiriusXM

    Excited until fit checked

Jim from Winchester, CA on 10/14/2014

I bought this from Pioneer direct and I was initially excited when I received my unit. I took it out of the box and was immediately a little let down. The build quality doesn't seem to be up to Pioneer's previous standards (i.e: NEX4000). The casing didn't seem as solid and the face plate seemed cheap. I expected more for the purchase price. There was also one more huge deal breaker (at least for my 2011 Dodge Nitro). The face of the radio (the chrome area on this unit where you would normally attach a trim ring or mount into a dash kit) is about 1/2 as deep as any other double din radio available. This resulted in large, unacceptable gaps when I fit checked the radio with my dash kit. I wound up requesting a return the same day This may not be an issue for others but I couldn't make it work and I wanted future buyers to be aware of it. I didn't even bother to unpack the wire harness and the other accessories because if it physically won't fit, it doesn't mater how well it works.

Pros: Apple CarPlay out of the box

Cons: Odd faceplate design with a shallower front panel than every other double din radio out there.

    • Music Library: Through Apple CarPlay, you can ccess your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Pioneer head unit's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Apple continues to add more apps to CarPlay. Current supported apps include (fees may apply):
Note: If you need an additional USB extension cable, use Pioneer's CD-MU200 cable (130CDMU200, sold separately). For Car Play, you will only use the CD-MU200's 58" USB extension cable, and not the included 19" micro-to-USB cable. Any other USB extension cable can cause CarPlay or Android Auto to malfunction.

iPod/iPhone Direct via USB: In addition to full support of the iPhone with Lightning connector, the Pioneer AppRadio 4 also supports playback of stored music and music apps (but not AppRadio app) from other 30-pin or Lightning connector Apple devices via either USB port. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre.
    • Repeat & Random: You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder.
    • Song/Artist Info: In addition, the AppRadio 4 receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art.
Note: The receiver's USB connection provides 1.6A of current to power and charge your connected Apple device when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology (powered by Parrot): The AppRadio 4 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Bluetooth connectivity for iPod/iPhone will automatically be terminated when your Apple device is connected to the AppRadio 4 via a Lightning or 30-pin to USB cable.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AppRadio 4 without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit; only one device can be used at a time.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AppRadio 4.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ External Mic): The AppRadio 4 supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the AppRadio 4 provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AppRadio 4 allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AppRadio 4, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Direct Dialing: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's touchscreen keypad (0-9, *, #, +).
    • Preset Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book (w/ Alphabet Search): The phone book (up to 800 contacts) in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book from the head unit, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for a phone number by the contact person's name alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Call Log: The most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.

Note: All Bluetooth phone functions are available with or without the parking brake engaged.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Pioneer AppRadio 4 also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The head unit can stream music stored on your Bluetooth enabled device or music apps you have downloaded on your device. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the AppRadio 4 lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. (app must also support). When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call.

Siri Eyes-Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri (iOS 6.1+) via Bluetooth, the Pioneer AppRadio 4 has the ability to access Siri through its touchscreen and external microphone for "Siri Eyes-Free" functionality. When activated, Siri voice prompts play through the vehicle's speakers and the user's commands and questions are received and transmitted to the receiver using the external microphone. Siri Eyes-Free provides access to many iPhone Siri functions such as music selection, making phone calls, and audible navigation (map will be displayed on iPhone); as well as listening to text messages, calendar information, and reminders. The head unit's audio is muted while Siri provides audible voice prompts.

Note:  The head unit's touchscreen monitor will only indicate hands-free calling and song/artist information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Pioneer AppRadio 4; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

    AM/FM + Pandora Radio

Pandora App: The free Pandora App (either from Apple's App Store or Google Play) lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer AppRadio 4 using your USB-connected (port 1), Bluetooth-paired, or HDMI+Bluetooth-connected Apple iPhone (iOS 9.0+), as well as Bluetooth-paired Android smartphone (2.2+). The Pioneer AppRadio 4 provides control over the Pandora music service and displays Artist, Album, and Song information. You can select Pandora stations from your Station or Genre List and sort them by date or alphabetically (A-Z). New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also skip song tracks within a station. You can even give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down. An active Pandora account is required.

    • iPhone Connectivity: Your Apple iPhone must be connected to the AppRadio 4 via the appropriate Pioneer CD-IU52 iPod connector cable (sold separately), the connector-cable that came with your iPhone, or via Bluetooth.
    • Android Connectivity: Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Pioneer AppRadio 4. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

Note: Access to the Pandora Radio service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not supported in Canada and only available in the United States.

AM/FM Tuner: The Pioneer AppRadio 4 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with RDS text information display. The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations. BSM (Best Station Memory) lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under presets 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The AM/FM tuner has 3 FM banks and 2 AM banks. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 12 AM presets. You can even enter an AM/FM frequency directly, using the unit's on-screen keypad (0-9). Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception.

    USB & AV Connectivity

Dual USB Ports: The unit's two rear-panel USB (type-A) ports and 58" USB extension cable allows you to connect a USB Mass Storage Class (MSC) device; such as your Android smartphone (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio player, or USB thumbdrive. The USB port enables playback & control of music, video, and photo files stored on your portable USB MSC device through the Pioneer AppRadio 4. The receiver also display song/artist information and will charge your connected USB device.

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AppRadio 4 has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

AV Output (w/ Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. You can simultaneously enjoy the same or different sources in the front and rear of your vehicle. The unit's A/V output can be set to Mirror, AV-IN, USB, iPod, or Off. The Mirror mode simply outputs the same audio/video signal which is playing on the head unit's touchscreen monitor to your connected rear monitor/headphone system.

HDMI Input: In addition to AppRadio mode for iPhone and Android, the receiver's HDMI input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device (not the Pioneer head unit).

Rear View Camera: The AppRadio 4 is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input to connecting an optional rear-view camera, like Pioneer's ND-BC6 (130NDBC8, sold separately).

    • Auto Reverse Switching: The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image when an optional rear camera is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the reverse wire in the included harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.1 seconds.
    • Guidelines: The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle.
    • Towing: You can even select for the rear-view camera to stay on at all times, so you can keep an eye on the trailer you are towing.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.2" LCD Touchscreen Monitor: The front of the Pioneer AppRadio 4 features a clean & simple aesthetic look with only six physical buttons (Home, Volume up/down, Mode, Skip Previous/Next) combined with a high-resolution WVGA (800 x 480) 6.2" capacitive touchscreen display. This capacitive touchscreen requires less pressure, responds faster, and can recognize multiple touch points simultaneously; all advantages when compared to traditional resistive touchscreen displays. The AppRadio 4' 6.2" capacitive touchscreen offers touch, swipe, pinch, and zoom gestures. Touchscreen control is used for all functions including the AppRadio mode interface, CarPlay, MirrorLink, Pandora, AM/FM radio, and Bluetooth. All of the AppRadio 4's controls have been designed specifically for in-vehicle operation to promote a safe driving experience.

    • Favorites: You can register the desired menu items on the AppRadio 4's "Favorites" menu screen. Registering your favorite menu items allows you to quickly jump to the registered menu item by a simple touch on the favorites menu. Up to 12 menu items can be registered as a "Favorite".
    • OSD + Backgrounds: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background display can be selected from 8 different preset displays for the AV Operation screen and 5 different preset displays for the Home Menu screen. In addition, you can change the background display to other images imported from an external USB device.
    • Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video - Full (4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only; enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions), Zoom (4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen), Normal (4:3 picture is displayed as it is).
    • Picture Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for the head unit's video source and rear-view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast) color (adjusts color saturation), temperature (adjust the color temperature), and Dimmer (adjusts brightness).
    • Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.
Note: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be stopped with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used touch-sensitive buttons along the left edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music.

Pass-Code Security: You can create a 5 to 16 character password that must be entered if the head unit is disconnected from power.

Optional Steering Wheel Control Adapter: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).

    Audio Section

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)
Note: The power specifications for the AppRadio 4 are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The Pioneer AppRadio 4 features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The Pioneer AppRadio 4 lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Crossovers: The AppRadio 4 employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 13-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 13-band graphic equalizer (50, 80, 125, 200, 315, 500, 800, 1.25k, 2k, 3.15k, 5k, 8k, and 12.5k Hz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Audio Settings: The head unit provides further sound adjustments for your car audio system.

    • Listening Position & Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right, or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-200") for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source (AM, Pandora, iPod, Apps) to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the unit's FM volume level, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App/Media App Control mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone/iPad. It is also not supported by USB MTP devices.

This radio is awesome for those who love the features of their phone and all the input options. Beware you cannot use a video bypass on this unit or a single pole double throw relay because this system takes too long to boot and the bypasses do their job before the radio is ready to detect them. However you can install a switch to do the job and it will work just fine. I love this unit, but I will say you need to read the Manuel because there is a learning curve on this one. up grade from my old pioneer dvh1400 dvd unit [ JEFFREY R  Feb 10, 2016 ]
The Pioneer had all of the features that I was looking for in a video unit. I had specific needs, such as Android control, at least a 4volt preamplifier section, and the ability to play FLAC files while the phone was simultaneously hooked up. This unit had great reviews and was the best price for performance I found after many hours of research. [ Jason  Feb 04, 2016 ]

I believe that yes, it will allow for multiple Bluetooth pairings (we have a couple of i-phones that connect to the radio) but I don't believe it will allow them to be CONNECTED at the same time. But, if 1 I-phone is not around to connect, the other paired phone will connect and take over. [ Michael  Apr 10, 2017 ]
Yes it also auto connects to the last device used. [ David  Apr 10, 2017 ]
This is difficult to adjust on the radio, because the volume for the alerts isn't visible when the alerts are not active. I had to call Crutchfield 4 times to finally get a representative who knew how to make this adjustment. If I recall correctly, when the alert is active, a pop up appears in the lower right corner, and clicking that will let you adjust the volume of the alerts. Dumbest thing I've ever seen. [ WILLIAM  Apr 11, 2017 ]
Yes there is. Press the volume up button. When the volume bar appears look all the way to the right where it says alerts. Click on alerts and you can adjust the volume of the navigation volume. Hope I answered you questions. [ Taylor  Apr 10, 2017 ]

Unfortunately no. You can only sync one phone at a time via Bluetooth. I believe this is a Bluetooth protocol limitation and not a function of the stereo. That said, the app radio will store multiple phones in memory so that whatever family member is driving, their phone will automatically connect. [ JAMES R  Dec 24, 2016 ]
I havent tried it simultaneously, but it can save multiple phones [ Jesse  Dec 23, 2016 ]
Yes and no. You would have an understanding of your cars radio/audio wiring diagram and what all that mic is connected to. Lots of newer cars use the drivers mic as input for sound canceling. If the diagram only shows the mic going to the factory radio then it is a possibility. You would have to make sure the factory mic wires are the same as the wires in a 2.5mm rca and make the right connections and it may work. You may also look for a wiring harness for your car that has the 2.5mm rca on it already, not sure if that's a thing. But it is a possibility, just don't do anything you aren't 100% sure of or beyond your skill level. Good luck. [ william  Dec 06, 2016 ]
Hi, It uses a small mic that comes with the unit, I installed mine on top of my steering column. directly in front of me. you do have to speak loudly if there is any kind of external noise all in ll it works decent, not great but decent. I can't for the life of me figure out how to set the clock on the unit, it won't let me set the minutes, just a heads up [ anthony  Oct 27, 2016 ]
The headunit has an external mic. The phone's mic is not used. Call audio is through car speakers. Call quality is good. [ christopher  Oct 26, 2016 ]
This head unit does not support wireless CarPlay, but it uses the lightning connector on your phone for all CarPlay features including phone calls. Your installer or you can route the USB extension cable that comes with this to somewhere convienient in your car and you use a standard USB to Lightning (charging) cable to connect your phone to the head unit. Because the connection is direct it's usually better than Bluetooth performance. [ Joshua  Oct 13, 2016 ]
This receiver does not support wireless CarPlay, you have to plug it in to connect. I have not found that to be an inconvenience. [ Aaron  Oct 11, 2016 ]
It's gonna let you make and answer calls with the phone you have pairs via Bluetooth. Personally I've never tried to plug two iPhones into the device. You should just plug your iPhone that you make calls with into the radio with the appropriate cord per model and use Apple car play, it's freakin awesome. Though you have to have an iPhone 5 or newer for that. [ william  Sep 06, 2016 ]
CarPlay is. It a function of the AppRadio itself it's a function of your iPhone. You can go into your phone settings and make custom adjustments on how CarPlay works and stuff. Just make sure you have the correct wires for your phone and your radio is set up for your phone and it's connections. Good luck [ william  Dec 06, 2016 ]

Yes, all the music function work. [ Matilde  Jul 09, 2016 ]
Yes. It works fine with Apple Music. I was using it with Apple Music before I switched over to Spotify. Nothing against the head unit just issues I had with Apple Music itself. [ Jesse  Jul 09, 2016 ]
Yes you will. Apple radio as well. [ CLAY  Jul 09, 2016 ]
For Carplay connect the standard USB iphone lightning cable to USB port 1 of the Appradio unit. to use Appradio you will need an additional iphone lightning cable, HDMI cable and Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter. Plug your iphone cable to USB port 2 of the appradio unit for this set-up. Personally the Appradio is not worth the trouble but Car play works great if you like Apple apps. [ DDD  Jun 24, 2016 ]

For legal reasons and safety concerns, this unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming when the vehicle is in motion. I hope that helps. [ Larry  May 08, 2016 ]  Staff
Go to the Pioneer website, pull up the radio, and look for what is included in the box. Then contact crutchfield and see if they have any installation kits for your vehicle. That should give you an idea of what you need. Also, the manual can be downloaded on Pioneer's site. [ JR Lance  Apr 11, 2016 ]

You can music on the iPhones and use maps. I've never tried two devices plunged in [ BRIAN  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Yes, it will do two things at once. Be aware though that to have full functionality your phone must connect via USB. [ Philip  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Using just one iPhone, yes I do that all the time via lightening connector. The music dims and the directions play on top. You can even use Waze and you will still get voice prompts, you just won't see it on the screen. It does not work with the pioneer radio. From my experience it seems you either use Car Play or you use the pioneer side. There may be a way with the Pioneer App radio stuff but I have not played with it enough. I have not tried using two devices yet. I imagine it will not work as it's probably like using the radio - CarPlay locks in on one device. I will try later this week as I do have two cables connected and will confirm my findings. [ ERIK M  Mar 01, 2016 ]
It sounds like you are asking if you can listen to music at the same time use gps navigation, with both functions served by your iPhone (iPods don't have gps). If that is the question, yes. CarPlay is basically a big touchscreen for your phone. If your phone can do it, it will continue to work that way. [ WILLIAM  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Your phone has to be plugged in for maps to work. Music will play via usb through CarPlay at this time and will cut in when needed to advise on map directions. [ JAMES J  Mar 01, 2016 ]
I have not used the Bluetooth feature yet but I can tell you that you can play music on your iPhone and use the map feature at the same time. [ Donald  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Yes u can do both at the same time and is one of the best unit i have not regreted purchasing , you will really love its performance too [ HENRY  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Once you plug in your IPhone to use CarPlay all other sources donot work. CarPlay will play music from your IPhone and do maps at the same time. The radio is the only other source that will play while in CarPlay mode. [ carlos  Mar 01, 2016 ]
If what you're asking is can you run two inputs at once, being iPhone for CarPlay functions and an iPod for music, the answer is no. The unit only allows you to have one Input at a time. [ Brett  Mar 01, 2016 ]
Yes. You can have music playing from the Music app, Pandora, or Spotify and use the Maps app at the same time. If you're in one of music apps to change a song or whatever reason, it will place a Maps app icon on the top left of the screen for you to easily switch back to view your directions. [ Cosme Marcel  Feb 27, 2016 ]
Yes you can have map directions and listen to pandora Spotify or and aux input at the same time [ Alex  Feb 27, 2016 ]

If someone wanted to steal it, they would have disassemble the dash to get to the mounting bolts. on the inside. [ Jordan  Feb 25, 2016 ]
If you use the stock screws for the head unit and if someone knows how to remove the central dash vents in my Mazda 3, it would be pretty easy to steal. I would look into some non-standard screws that require a special tool for removal and you would be good. [ Steven  Feb 25, 2016 ]

All the radios we carry are designed specifically to work with vehicles released in the United States and tune all US/North American AM & FM frequencies. There are some models we carry that also offer European tuning which lets you tune to the European interval of .05 kHz on the FM frequency band; however, this Pioneer AppRadio 4 does not support European tuning. AppRadio Unchained Reloaded does with with the appradio 4 but you have to have a rooted phone im pretty sure not matter what radio you use the app with. the last i looked they added support for the external GPS antenna to be used instead of the phones so that it would get better accuracy and not drain the phones power. Ive used on a rooted motorolla droid 4 it and it works with my appradio 4 although the phone itself is old and slow. Id advise to read people reviews of the appradio unchained reloaded app as it also has pros and cons to be tailored to your personal needs. The main reason i went with the appradio 4 over the 3 was because it played FLAC files natively from a USB stick. It also has support for apple carplay if you have an iphone. the buttons are also different but if i already had an appradio 3 with a rooted phone i think playing FLAC files from the phone over the MHL connection would sound good enough. unless you have an iphone i would not think it would be worth the upgrade costs. [ Ryan  Dec 21, 2015 ]
IVe only had the 4 and I can confirm that it does work. Though depending on the phone you have, it may be cumbersome to set up or just simply not work. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, and it refuses to work with that phone because of the extra resolution along the edge of the screen I am told. I does work on the Note 3. Have not tested any other phones. [ Mark  Dec 21, 2015 ]

It can be dimmed it in the settings. This receiver has a lot of functions that you wouldn't believe. It's definitely worth the buy!!!! [ CARMEN H  Oct 27, 2015 ]
Well, I have numerous complaints about this device, but the brightness of the screen is not among them. I don't believe you can adjust the brightness of the screen, but it does not seem overly bright to me. My issues with this device are 1. software related to CarPlay by Apple and 2. just specific to this device. I'm not totally sure which category each complaint falls into; the reader can decide. Complaint 1: It randomly stops using CarPlay and defaults to the Pioneer interface. Complaint 2: The Pioneer interface sucks for plugging in and playing from the iPhone (though the Bluetooth works great). I have had this device for about 10 months now and have yet to play songs while the phone is plugged in to charge, through the Pioneer interface. Complaint 3: The touchscreen is persnickety. It's probably not_that_bad, but since it looks like an Apple screen, when you touch it you expect it to have Apple quality, and well, it just does not. Complaint 4: If you want to use a different map / directions app other than the standard iOS Map, you are out of luck (if you want to use it with your phone plugged in and for the map to work on the screen of the Pioneer). Complaint 5: The iOS interface for Music & Now Playing is not that great compared to the interface on the iPhone or iPad after recent updates. Specifically, most of the functionality of Apple Music is lost on the Pioneer or it is simply to difficult to navigate while driving. I will say that, using the CarPlay interface for sending and receiving texts works great. It reads your text to you and you speak your response. However, you cannot send/receive texts in this way using the Pioneer interface. And, have I mentioned before that the unit inexplicably reverts to the Pioneer interface at random? Overall, when considering purchasing this, ask yourself what you really want it for? I don't know if it functions any better or worse than other models that allow CarPlay. [ Brooke  Oct 26, 2015 ]
The wire harness does have a connection for the vehicles dimmer. However, when I try to adjust the brightness through the vehicle dash dimmer control nothing happens. There is a brightness setting built into the radio itself that can be accessed through the menus. The level that I have mine set to is not at all distracting. You just can't control it directly from the vehicle dimmer. I owned this head unit for a few months before it was stolen. I replaced it with a Pioneer AVH-4100NEX. Cost a bit more but WELL worth the extra money. If you can afford the extra I would recommend it over the AppRadio. If the higher price is a problem then I say the AppRadio is still a great radio. [ Doss Moving  Oct 26, 2015 ]
This is a fantastic unit. They are correct that it is bright and I have not found a way to dim down the display, however you can chance the color scheme to somethings little less distractive at night or upload your own background to something you like. [ Troy  Oct 26, 2015 ]

Make sure you have the right audio source selected on your phone. Siri may be responding because your phone can hear you and not your car mic. [ JAMES S  Oct 19, 2015 ]

I am having the same issues sporadically. Pioneer did release a 1.09 firmware update which I haven't installed and that it may solve this. Hope this helps. [ Romano Uni / we  Oct 19, 2015 ]

Sorry I am not sure about this questions and how to help answer it. Did want too chine of quick on the overall usage and quality of the unit. Mine freezies up a lot while driving and have to restart car for it to work again. And to get any app too continually work is impossible. Pandora always needs to be reset on phone and anything in the app radio section screen really sucks. Random play on the usb drive is a joke. 900+ songs and I hear the same ones over and over. I hate this radio unit! Waste of my money!!!! Tell all about what I think and say about this crap deck!!! [ derek  Sep 28, 2015 ]

    Yep [ david  Sep 21, 2015 ]
You sure can it has amp pre outs for front and rear speakers as well as subs. You will need an amp to make the subs work though, but yes you can hook your subs to this head unit. [ william  Sep 21, 2015 ]
This unit does not include nor is it expandable to add HD or Satellite radio. Hope that helps. [ Kenny  Feb 27, 2016 ]  Staff
Although not recommended to use your phone while driving. It is still able to change apps in CarPlay mode. I do this when a non car play app needs to be accessed. [ Todd  Sep 05, 2015 ]
You can use your phone. Whatever you do on your phone will happen in real time on the AppRadio as long as it is an app supported by the radio (an app that "exists" on the radio). [ Patrick  Sep 04, 2015 ]
You can use either the radio's interface, the CarPlay interface (iPhone), or the Appradio interface, depending on what is connected (iPhone or Android), and how it is connected (there are multiple connections). Without a smartphone connected you can still use the radio and an iPod (if connected instead) for music. I hope this helps. [ JR Lance  Sep 02, 2015 ]
Yes, you can switch music from your phone and you can use the home button to activate Seri but you cannot adjust the volume with the phone. [ Kevin  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yes you can still use your phone to move around to the various functions (e.g., call, messages, music, podcasts, maps, etc.). However it is far easier and safer in my opinion to use the touch screen on the Carplay receiver. [ Bryan A.  Sep 01, 2015 ]
You can use your phone to do what you want. [ CRAIG  Sep 01, 2015 ]
You can use either. Carplay only understands some things... if you switch to an app it doesn't understand it simply 'ignores' that app and gives you the main menu. The iPhone works like it always works. [ Rebecca  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Why would you want to? The answer is yes. Your phone is still accessible in CarPlay mode. [ Aaron  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yes, at least through an iPhone. [ Matthew  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Yes, you can use your phone, and it's often faster to do so. I recently figured out that the best way to use CarPlay is to start playing something on your iPhone BEFORE you plug it into CarPlay. It takes a solid 60-90 seconds for CarPlay to boot up and the iPhone and head unit are completely unusable during that time. Honestly, you should probably wait for newer units that support Wi-Fi and hopefully work faster, I've been pretty frustrated with CarPlay so far. If you do go ahead and buy it, make sure you get the kit to connect it to your steering wheel controls. Using Siri is a PITA from the screen because you have to tap and hold the home button and the screen is terrible at figuring out what you're trying to do. [ David  Sep 01, 2015 ]
You can change the music either way- using the phone or the receiver. Both when connected and when not connected via bluetooth. [ Chris  Sep 01, 2015 ]

Other posters have mentioned this but there is a wire on some harnesses that you can connect and then set the dimmer brightness when the lights are turned on and set a different level when they are turned off. Even though my Lexus RX330 had this wire, and was connected, it did not work on my vehicle. So, at the moment, I'm just going to fry and find a single setting that works well for the daytime and doesn't blind me at night :) [ Dave-o  Nov 29, 2015 ]
there is an illumination wire that you connect to a wire that comes on when you turn on your lights (Mine has one in the radio harness already) When connected and the lights are on, you can adjust night brightness to your liking. Then turn the lights off and adjust day time brightness. Without the illumination wire connected it is a manual process. Just find a wire that goes +12v when lights are turned on and life is good. Before I hooked it up I was blinded and miserable. the setting up of this is not entirely obvious that the settings are being saved for each state of lights on and lights off. It does work fine. The manual helps but its a download. [ Robin  Nov 07, 2015 ]
It automatically dims. Alternatively, you can turn off the screen. [ JEREMY  Apr 26, 2015 ]
No it doesn't and there is no "one touch" button either. You can go into the settings and dim the display but that's about it. I hope someone comes out with a DMR with knobs. Touchscreens are not good in cars while your operating the automoble. Every time you have to interact with the device you have to take your eyes off the road (to change the volume, for example). I might as well use the iPhone. Siri works sometimes. [ Robin M.  Apr 24, 2015 ]
Didn't notice if it dims at night .the screen stays the same . Love this deck [ charles  Apr 23, 2015 ]
it will dim if you have the appropriate wire connected. The amount it dims by is configurable in the radio settings. I'm not sure if there's a manual dim control if the headlight signal isn't connected [ Stephen  Apr 23, 2015 ]
There is a dimming wire that will handle this when your headlights go on. I'm not sure if you can fine tune it (I'd like it to dim even more), but it does dim when you turn on your headlights. [ Matthew  Apr 23, 2015 ]
Hi Jon O. I am not sure the screen has that dimming feature but I've never found the screen to be a problem as far as brightness. It is worth looking into. Pioneer has a decent support center I think. Perhaps you can ask there or download the manual and read through it. There is a feature that allows you to turn off the screen though, although I've never done this because I think the screen looks cool. [ JR Lance  Apr 23, 2015 ]
Yes, assuming you connect the wire from the head unit to the appropriate wire in your car. [ Paul  Apr 23, 2015 ]

It work with any iphone that has the Carplay app., Lightning connector and the 7.1 or later OS. I'm sure about iphone 4s. [ Roberto  Mar 16, 2015 ]
It's based on iOS version.Apple CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. CarPlay will be available in select cars shipping in 2014. [ JAMES S  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Bo, Your iPhone 4s will work with this receiver. However, the CarPlay functionality of the receiver will only work for the iPhone 5 or newer devices. Without CarPlay, you still have all the great Pioneer appradio applications, stored music playback, and Pandora, as well as Bluetooth hands-free calling. Since the CarPlay feature of this receiver isn't of immediate use to you, you may want to check out the other appradio receivers Pioneer offers. If your next phone upgrade is coming soon and you plan on sticking with Apple, I strongly recommend this receiver. [ CHRISTOPHER J  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Hello, I do not use the fm radio, but when I am listening to a USB stick in 1 USB and my iPhone is in the other USB all of the CarPlay notifications work such as map directions, text message notifications and incoming calls. I would assume that the same holds true for fm radio. [ Jeremy  Mar 17, 2015 ]
Carplay features continue to work without switching inputs. You only need to press the display screen for whatever other function you desire (e.g., Messages, Phone, Maps, etc.) by touching the mode function button on the left colum to get you back to the CarPlay screen. Simply stated, once your phone is linked with the Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio with the USB cable, you navigate around the touch screen to whatever function you desire. [ Bryan A.  Mar 16, 2015 ]
correct - iphone still works but it uses the crappy pioneer interface instead. [ Suhail  Mar 16, 2015 ]
I have never used the analog FM radio. Any radio I have listened to is through the select digital stations that are in the internet radio section of Airplay, like ESPN radio or NPR, for example. [ Robin M.  Mar 16, 2015 ]
The carplay features still work with the fm tuner on. It mutes the sound if you need to speak and sound becomes audible after siri completes doing her thing. [ JR Lance  Mar 16, 2015 ]
You can have an fm station playing while using car play - including using apple maps with full functionality. [ Rajiv  Mar 16, 2015 ]
Mine does. While listening to FM, I hit the mode button, then select the Carplay icon. Then I can view my navigation or make a call through my contacts, etc. [ CRAIG  Mar 16, 2015 ]

It does provide a small amount of power by todays standards to "charge a device" but its so low that most devices with bluetooth / gps /wireless or even just playing music/streaming would probably drain just as fast or even faster then the unit could power it at. They do make third party breakout usb cables for some phones that will allow you to connect your phone to a secondary charging device while keeping the data portion connected to another. [ Ryan  Dec 21, 2015 ]
Using the built in Sony USB it does NOT keep my Samsung Note 3 charged while using GPS. The phone keeps draining. I don't think it would make a full day driving. [ Russell  Feb 09, 2015 ]
The battery does charge even when using Apple Carplay. [ Doss Moving  Jan 31, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Where this receiver uses your phone to run the amp and moves the controls/display to itself, it will not work without cell service on the phone. You may have a few seconds of cached data, but I would not expect anything real useful. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jan 30, 2015 ]  Staff
The phone doesn't lock when it's connected to the app radio and is in CarPlay mode. Whatever you do on the radio does not show up on the phone. It appears as it functions independently even though the app radio uses your iPhone as the brains. [ Brett  Jan 26, 2015 ]
Once the lightning cable is plugged in, all phone/music/map functionality is run through the AppRadio. There is no need to handle the phone unless you want to look at an app on the phone that isn't supported by the AppRadio (of which there are many). However, listening to music, receiving & sending texts via Siri Eyes Free (which is really cool) and map functionality is all on the head unit. Those things are really all you need to be messing with while driving anyhow. BTW, with two extra adapters available from Crutchfield and Apple you can stream Netflix, Hulu etc.. to the AppRadio. Just sayin' [ christopher  Jan 23, 2015 ]
The phone will not lock once it is unlocked and plugged in to the Pioneer unless you take the key out of the ignition. If you turn off the car and leave the phone plugged in, it may ask you to unlock your iPhone in order to utilize carplay when you put the key back in and the radio reboots. Without unlocking the phone, you will be limited to the radio and other non-carplay functions of the radio. If you want it to wake automatically all the time, you have to disable the automatic lock on the phone, I would imagine. Hope this helps. [ JR Lance  Jan 23, 2015 ]
Yes you can just use Bluetooth audio and receive phone calls just make sure you have the mic hooked up that came with the reciever. You just select Bluetooth audio in the with the drop down arrow. Fyi I think using Bluetooth audio the volume does not come through as loud as a aux cord [ Michael  Jan 19, 2015 ]
Car play only works when it's plugged in and Bluetooth works when car play is not plugged in. Bluetooth works like normal Bluetooth with songs and calls. [ SHANTIL  Jan 19, 2015 ]
Yes. You can stream music through Bluetooth. Unless you plug your phone in and start CarPLay, it will play through Bluetooth by default (once your phone is detected / connected). [ Brooke  Jan 18, 2015 ]
You can have the bluetooth connection set to auto-connect. That way when you turn your car on you can stream music and make phone calls without doing anything. You cannot use bluetooth while using carplay, but if auto-connect is enabled, simply disconnect your iPhone from the lightning cable and you'll be able to stream music and make/receive phone calls via bluetooth automatically. Note: In order to stream music you will have to change the audio source of the receiver to "Bluetooth". Just like any other audio source. [ Jake  Jan 18, 2015 ]
I believe you can, yes. There are two usb ports in the back of the radio and the radio should allow you to access either device. There is also a rear setting on the radio that may allow you to play two things at once if you have a video screen in the rear seat. I have not set that up yet but I think it is an option. [ JR Lance  Jan 23, 2015 ]
    No I was told IS08 is not hasn't been updated [ KRESS  Jan 18, 2015 ]
Clicking App radio mode sends the device into the default Pioneer mode. To date the only app I have attempted to run was Pandora, which had some issues (refusing to load). The CarPlay mode however, works as advertised aside from some issues that still need to be addressed via software update (map mode operating sometimes in vertical mode, music app launch sometimes crashing). That said, when the unit is running bug free (98% of the time) Navigation, phone, calendar, basically all of the CarPlay functions work as described, which has negated much desire on my part to delve into the App Radio functions. [ John  Jan 14, 2015 ]
I don't use the calendar while I'm driving but as far as music, phone calls, texts, and maps apps go they all work just fine. I'm unaware of any features not working with iOS 8 and I've had this radio installed about a month now. [ Brad  Jan 12, 2015 ]
I thought this was weird as well. I am running it with iOS 8.1.2 and the only issue I have seen is with the "Hey Siri" feature. When you say "Hey Siri", she pops up and the screen says "What Can I Help You With" and then promptly ignores anything you say and disappears. This is the only time it doesn't work though. Everything else is works just fine. Really cool stuff. My i Phone is my work phone. My personal is a Galaxy S4 and while I can also hook it up in AppRadio mode, CarPlay is far superior. I'm an Adnroid guy, but in this case the iPhone is a much smoother experience. Get it, you won't be disappointed! [ Patrick  Jan 10, 2015 ]
You may want to look at the nex series in case this unit doesn't work for carplay. I bought this for my son and he has a 4s iPhone which doesn't have the carplay feature ?? the unit is nice but if it doesn't give you all of the features you're looking for you'll be stuck with something you hate. At least with one of the nex series units you can add on what you need if the CarPlay doesn't function. [ David  Jan 10, 2015 ]
It works, but the apps that are compatible with 8 are limited. This unit supports Apple CarPlay which is vastly superior. It works with phone, messages and navigation. I have never tried calendar. It also works with 3rd party apps such as pandora and spotify. I'm not sure which phones other than 6 support CarPlay, it's the only phone I've tried. [ Jeremy  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Sorry I didn't buy it for app radio I bought it for car play and it works excellent for car play my iPhone six syncs up seamlessly and the radio is very responsive [ RANDY  Jan 10, 2015 ]
I use it running 8.1.2 without any troubles. All the features using carplay work fine. I don't use any of the appradio features. You can plug into the unit and run carplay for navigation, messaging using Siri, making phone calls, etc. I also use Bluetooth to connect wirelessly to stream music from my phone. [ Justin  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Yes. The pioneer app radio apps are not compatible with iOS 8. However, I don't use those apps anyway since the radio has carplay. I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 8 and I use the pioneer radio with carplay entirely. All the apps are the iOS CarPlay apps. The app radio is a pioneer OS that is not compatible with iOS 8. Although, I don't think I missed anything or used it ever. The only apps I used are from the CarPlay. Once you plug in your iOS 8 iPhone, the CarPlay interface starts up and you can now then use the apple maps, iMessage, music, spotify, podcasts, Iheart radio, cbs radio, phone and Siri. [ Bertrick  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Features seem to work fine, but I use this head unit exclusively in CarPlay mode. Everything about CarPlay works perfectly. [ Aaron  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Awesome! Thanks a ton for the quick informative answers guys! [ Stephen H  Jan 10, 2015 ]
All of those features work via CarPlay a different system than the AppRadio. The AppRadio features haven't been updated to support iOS 8 yet. However navigation, phone, music, messages/SMS, and confirmed Calendar notifications all work through CarPlay. also any App that asserts itself into CarPlay like pandora, spotify and Rdio. [ Joshua  Jan 10, 2015 ]
If your running IOS 8 then The apps that have a keyboard are useless... However apple CarPlay works but I do miss my appradio apps for video and waze [ MARCUS  Jan 10, 2015 ]
Stephen, This pertains to the App Radio function of the receiver. Using the Apple CarPlay functionality of the receiver the navigation and messaging do work. One thing to be aware of is the on screen keyboard is still not operational for some apps. In the case of navigation, this is easily circumvented by entering the destination on the phone prior to starting navigation. Unless the navigation destination is in recents. Messaging is all dictated with your voice so no issues there. As for the calendar, I haven't tried this function out, but if you can avoid using a keyboard and input everything using voice commands I think it should work. [ CHRISTOPHER J  Jan 10, 2015 ]
I use ios8 without problems... I don't think calendar works, but I have not tried either.... I use CarPlay, but I will be trying out app radio this weekend. [ Trey  Jan 10, 2015 ]

1 answer I'm confused about the difference between AppRadio mode and MirrorLink. I'm on an android device, so please direct answers about using Android, not IOS. I'll be using an iPod Classic via a 30-pin connector. I don't have nor do I stream music on my phone - it's all on the iPod. Navigation is what I'm most concerned with. I want to use Google Maps like I do on my phone, but on the receiver, and be able to listen to music while getting turn-by-turn directions, and retain voice search in maps. So I'm trying to understand which connection method I should use. So let me see if I got this straight: MirrorLink requires the CD-MU200 cable, which looks only like a standard USB to MicroUSB. Is that all this is? AppRadio mode uses Pioneer's own built-in apps (and a companion app on the phone) to interface with the phone and use it's resources? So rather than using Google Maps like I do on the phone, I'll be using Pioneer's "AppRadio" version of the maps app to navigate, but pulling the necessary resources from my phone? With this method, it looks like I'll have to do all the inputting on the phone and the receiver's screen just displays the map, nothing more? Do turn-by-turn directions come through the receiver? Can I continue to listen to music on the iPod while navigating, or must I stay in the maps app on the receiver? MirrorLink looks like I'm getting some version of my phone's home screen on the receiver's screen and actually interacting with my phone as if I were holding it in my hand, but through the receiver's screen instead? So I would be directly running the Google Maps app from my phone, but through the receiver? Will I do input on the receiver's screen? Will I retain voice search? turn-by-turn? And lastly, can I continue to listen to iPod audio while navigating? Any other differences I don't know about? Anything significant? I'd appreciate it if someone could break this down for me. [ Kevin  Dec 30, 2014 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: AppRadio allows you to use apps from your phone (iphone OR Android) on the receiver Mirrorlink (only for Android) is a system has tries to put your phones display onto your receiver. The music only cuts out when directions are given The CD-MU200 is simply a USB to Micro Using Appradio, you could still use Googlemaps but you would still need to control it from your phone. And for MirrorLink, You can navigate via Google Maps. You are able to speak and type destinations. The app provides you with an on-screen map screen and audible directions. The music will continue to play when commands are not being given. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. Hi Jose Yes the radio comes with a USB cable so you can plug in your lightning cable also through the usb cable the firmwire updates can be done. [ Juan  Dec 23, 2014 ]
Yes, the cable needs to be plugged in the USB port1 slot for iPhone functionality and to update the firmware. [ Raymond  Dec 23, 2014 ]
Yes, the head unit does not have navigation of its own. It uses your phones navigation and re displays it in a better, easier to read format. [ Brett  Dec 22, 2014 ]
As far as I know the antenna connected to the head unit is only used for app radio applications. Your phone and the Apple maps app within car play are utilizing the GPS in your phone. [ Anthony  Dec 21, 2014 ]
Yes, this increases the GPS accuracy when using a phone connected app. [ Todd  Dec 21, 2014 ]
Yes, your phone has to be connected to the head unit to benefit from the GPS antenna. The AppRadio has no GPS software installed. All maps come from the phone. The antenna is only to amplify the accuracy of the phone's map app. [ christopher  Dec 21, 2014 ]
For me, the GPS antenna is just used to set the time. [ Rebecca  Dec 21, 2014 ]
I have never been able to do this. Maybe it can and I just haven't successfully done it? In any case, it must not be terribly obvious how to accomplish this. [ Brooke  Oct 26, 2015 ]
    Yes [ david  Sep 21, 2015 ]
Sorry I don't have and answer, I have not installed the Radio. After Christmas I will have one. [ Roberto  Dec 16, 2014 ]
You can pair your phone and it will automatically connect for both music and phone calls. However it will not be in Apple Carplay mode. My understanding is Apple will be providing Bluetooth support of Apple Carplay with 9.0 IOS release. [ CRAIG  Sep 01, 2015 ]
If you set up Bluetooth pairing with your iPhone, calls will go through that if its not connected through CarPlay. I haven't tried it with more than one phone while connected to CarPlay, though. [ Stephen  Dec 11, 2014 ]
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Jeff  Dec 10, 2014 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 comes with a 58" USB extension cable so you can route that to a convenient spot so and switch out if you want to use both of them. I would suggest just starting out with Carplay since it uses the basic lightening to USB cable. Also if you have iOS 8 as the App Radio Mode is currently only compatible with iOS 7.1.2 If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I have still been unable to get a video signal to display via HDMI. Tried several different cables, but no video. Just audio. Haven't had a chance to call them yet. [ Patrick  Dec 16, 2014 ]
You can play on the go, if you wire appropriately. [ Brad  Dec 11, 2014 ]
parked its apple not pioneer that does it [ charles  Dec 10, 2014 ]
I haven't used that feature but I believe so. I've read reviews about earlier Pioneer models requiring the parking brake to be on to watch videos. I purchased this unit mainly to listen to music from my phone as I commuted to work via Carplay and for that it works well. Hope this helps. [ Robin M.  Dec 10, 2014 ]
    You'll most likely need a micro bypass. [ JEREMY  Dec 09, 2014 ]
    I didn't even know you could watch a video through HDMI. [ michael  Dec 09, 2014 ]
If you are using the head units display and not some rear seat video display, yes the car will have to be in park with the emergency brake applied. The head unit makes you prove this by applying the emergecy brake twice. [ Joshua  Dec 09, 2014 ]
You cannot play hdmi video while the car is in motion. Video playback is only when parking break is engage. [ Bertrick  Dec 09, 2014 ]
By default I would say yes, but a little bit of research and you may find a work around. I did for the appradio3 and the same workaround worked for the appradio4 [ MARCUS  Dec 09, 2014 ]
    I returned the item. so i don't know [ ANEEL K  Dec 09, 2014 ]
The unit connects to your parking brake which must be engaged for the video to work. [ Robert  Dec 09, 2014 ]
I haven't installed mine yet but after looking through the owners manual, you have to have the emergency brake engaged to be able to use a lot of the features. [ Corey  Dec 09, 2014 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It does not have internal memory or maps built in, so everything is done through your phone which means yes you are using data. It does not have an option to add an HD tuner. You load apps by connecting your iPhone/Adnroid to the head unit with the appropriate cables. It does have Bluetooth, but no Wi-Fi. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 28, 2014 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The unit also provides four on-screen guidelines to assist you when backing up your vehicle. I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Pioneer SPH-DA120 does not display album artwork on the display when audio streaming. It can be used, but only in AppRadio mode. [ CARMEN H  Oct 27, 2015 ]
I'm not sure. The only navigation app that appears to have a carplay counterpart is apple maps. [ Matthew  Sep 01, 2015 ]
At this time the TomTom app cannot be used instead of the Apple Maps. [ Jeff  Nov 25, 2014 ]  Staff
The GPS antenna should work in conjunction with the apps to provide more accurate data. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss further. [ Jeff  Nov 24, 2014 ]  Staff
Unfortunately, I have not because I haven't updated my iPhone to the ios8. How does the ios8 iphone work with the radio? Are you having any compatibility issues? JR [ JR Lance  Nov 21, 2014 ]
I just tried to use it now, and nothing came up in the car A friend uses waze all the time It seems to be perfectly fine, but until I got the pioneer I didn't care about it versus simple Google maps [ Rebecca  Nov 21, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The antenna is necessary if you wanted to take advantage of the navigation apps (such as Apple maps, Waze, etc.). The antenna will give you a stronger signal than the antenna that is built in your iPhone. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 22, 2014 ]  Staff
I pulled my hair out trying to follow other people experiences online and thought it just synced time with my phone when i connected it vie bluetooth. No where that i could find talked about needing the gps antenna plugged in to get the time to work. would of saved me some frusteration. thanks for hopefully helping future installers. [ Ryan  Dec 21, 2015 ]
I had the same problem. You must attach the GPS Square probe and let it connect to the time zone, even if you dont have any gps features. Once it is connect and picks up a signal you should be able to adjust the times by 30 minutes to get to the right time. When I installed mine I just pushed the little square back into my dash and its worked fine for me [ Stephen  Jul 20, 2015 ]

yes both will support a lighting cable, I have two installed on mine. [ Stephen  Jul 20, 2015 ]
Not sure. I got the radio professionallly installed. [ Suhail  Nov 11, 2014 ]
The head unt has a RCA input for the video feed and a reserve wire that you can tap into to notify the unit that the car is in reverse. However, in my case (A Toyota Prius), OEM wiring is not RCA and it is running on a 6V current instead of 12V, so it isn't a plug-and-play for me. According to customer service here they don't have a harness kit to hook up the existing OEM wiring to RCA input either, so my backup camera isn't working right now. If you have good understanding of vehicle wiring, I would suggest you find a Nissan Rogue user forum and search for anyone who may have done this conversion before, and ask for instructions. Good luck! [ Jonathan  Nov 10, 2014 ]
I installed an after market backup camera, works fine, pops right up as soon as it's on and in reverse. [ Cheap  Nov 09, 2014 ]
I installed this in my Nissan Versa, which I had installed a license plate backup camera. It works perfect with my backup camera and comes on instantly. Very clear monitor and bright. Could not be more pleased. [ CRAIG  Nov 09, 2014 ]

I purchased this unit for my wife's Nissan Versa, fit and installation went well. I hooked up a back-up license camera to the unit and it works very good. Nice large display. I cannot comment on steering wheel controls since her car does not have it installed. I updated my unit from 1.06 to firmware 1.07 I got from Pioneer's site. I have had a few issues, one is "Hey Siri" feature (Siri eye free mode) the unit responds instantly, but does not activate the microphone most of the time. If I select Siri using the iPhone 6+ home button, it works as it is suppose too. Not sure if this is a Pioneer firmware issue or Apple IOS 8.1 issue. Pioneer is looking into it. I also have had the unit drop hardwire connect, which I then had to take out and reinsert the Lightning to USB Cable at the iPhone. When the unit works, it works well, all functions are seamless and switching back and forth from radio to CarPlay is perfect. I hope Siri issue can be resolved as well as the random disconnections. BTW, I do not have the Bluetooth enabled, since CarPlay is the main means I use for making phone calls and it works and sounds much better. I like the integration of smartphone and radio that Carplay provides. Screens do not show much lag when selecting iTunes, Phone, or Maps; actually seem pretty responsive to me. I figure Carplay will only get better as time goes on so I am willing to put up with a few bugs while it is getting squared away. [ Craig  Nov 06, 2014 ]
After a week I am very pleased with it. It's in my 370z and works great with the steering wheel; however, the one I purchased from Crutchfield had some issues and I had to purchase another (don't remember the name, but it's the same maker as what Crutchfield gave me as the dash kit. Everything looks and sounds clean in my car. As far as Bluetooth, always use CarPlay. You can adjust the Bluetooth input level, but it sounds muffled and not nearly as clean. Spotify will work via Lightening cable. I use Rhapsody mostly and it works great. Overall it's a great unit for the price, but I keep it simple. All I'm concerned with it compatibility with the iPhone (Music, Rhapsody, and Maps) I did install the HDMI and have the connector, but haven't had a need to use it yet. [ JEREMY  Nov 06, 2014 ]
I am loving this unit so far! Just installed it last week and exclusively use it in CarPlay mode. My vehicle doesn't have any steering wheel controls, sadly, and I haven't hooked up a backup camera yet, but am considering it. It does sit flush with the dash kit that Crutchfield sent me for the Toyota RAV4 (wish I could include a photo) and it practically looks like it was designed for this vehicle! Very small gap on the bottom that I don't even notice. I haven't used Spotify yet, but I have used iTunes radio, iHeart Radio, CBS talk radio, and the mapping/texting/calling features. Love this unit! Only thing that could be improved is if my car did have steering wheel controls. I have to adjust volume with the capacitive buttons along the left (which you can fully customize the colors of). Note that different functions (maps, texts, calls, music) control volume differently. You may need to adjust Siri reading text messages to get a proper volume, but once it's set, you should be good. I have texts around vol10, music around vol15, alerts around vol10, etc. [ Aaron  Nov 04, 2014 ]
I can not answer for android, but for iOS users you CAN play music and navigation at the same time. The user who said you can't is incorrect. [ Aaron  Sep 01, 2015 ]
Right. I know you're asking about Android, but for others wanting the same answer, Joshua is correct. [ JEREMY  Nov 06, 2014 ]
I have used the CarPlay Apple Maps navigation on this unit, you can play audio while navigation is active. When navigation instructions are given the audio playback is muted, and returned when the instruction is completed. [ Joshua  Nov 03, 2014 ]
Indeed. Just tap 'MODE' then tap the down arrow on the upper right corner of the screen. You can select the radio, iPod, AUX, etc. [ JEREMY  Nov 06, 2014 ]
It can. You can hit the home button and it goes back to the car's apps. You can then use the mode button to switch between carplay and the radio. [ Mike  Nov 03, 2014 ]
There are no radio controls while in CarPlay mode, but there is a Mode button on touch controls along the left hand side of the display and also the "AppRadio" button in CarPlay mode which takes you back to the Pioneer interface where you can control the radio as normal while your iPhone is connected. You can go back into the CarPlay interface while the Radio is playing, but my experience is as soon as you engage anything in CarPlay while listening to the radio, including Messages/Navigation it picks audio playback from the CarPlay connected device. [ Joshua  Nov 03, 2014 ]
At any point you are able to flip back to the regular Pioneer interface by clicking the home or Mode button, at which point you can easily adjust the radio. It's quite seamless. Naturally while making this adjustment your CarPlay UI will no longer be on screen but it's one button press away. [ ELLIOT  Nov 03, 2014 ]
Yes you can click the Pioneer button to flip out of car play. From there you can play the radio. Still, I'm not sure why you would want to with itunes radio and I ?? radio. But yes you can. [ Andrew  Nov 03, 2014 ]
When iPhone is connected and CarPlay is in use, you can still return to appradio function by pressing the main home key. You can switch back and forth from pioneer's app radio and CarPlay. Also, when CarPlay is in use, you can still use your iPhone. CarPlay doesn't lock your phone in any way or prevent you from using your other iPhone apps. [ Bertrick  Nov 03, 2014 ]
Thanks for the reply! Thats a bummer that you have to switch back and forth. I will most often use the basic system anyway besides CarPlay ... I see me using that more when I am driving for longer distances or need navigation etc. So how do you like this unit? I have owned Pioneer touch screen before and like them ... I was first looking at 4000NEX but this seems to have the stuff I like and I like the capacative screen over the resistive of the others (and not spending $1400 for the 8000. Looking to put this in my 2011 GMC Siera truck with the iDatalink Mestro to have my steering wheels control everything etc. Any feedback on this unit and your thoughts would be great. Thanks so much. [ Guest  Nov 03, 2014 ]
Yes, you can press the mode button to switch between CarPlay and normal mode. You can also use either mode to control the iPod. I personally like the normal audio player to the car play one. You have more control and easy access to the settings and EQ. [ Jeremy  Nov 03, 2014 ]
I believe you need to purchase an HDMI cable and the Apple HDMI adaptor for the Lightning connector. [ Pete Stoppani  Oct 30, 2014 ]
Connect an Hdmi cable to the port on the back of the unit, then you need to get a lightning to AV connector from Apple which connects to the Hdmi. [ Alex  Oct 30, 2014 ]
