Our take on the Pioneer TS-A6885R

Are your car's factory speakers sounding less than fresh? Pioneer built their A-Series speakers to be high-performance replacements for your old speakers, designed from the ground up to bring back the life that your music's been missing. You'll be able to enjoy the clear vocals, chunky guitar riffs, powerful drums, and distinct bass lines that have always been a part of your favorite tunes, but have remained hidden behind sub-par speakers.

Built to make your music rock

Pioneer equipped the TS-A6885R 5"x7"/6"x8" speakers with multilayer mica-matrix woofers that stay rigid when the volume's turned up, keeping distortion to a minimum so your bass sounds clean. Each woofer gets paired up with a midrange speaker, a tweeter, and a supertweeter to add warmth and clarity to your driving soundtrack. These speakers will sound great running off your factory stereo, but they'll really shine when driven by an aftermarket receiver or an external amp. Don't drive another day listening to tired-sounding tunes, when you can enjoy Pioneer sound quality with these speakers in your vehicle.

Product Highlights:

  • 5"x7"/6"x8" 4-way car speakers (pair)

Way better than stock...but....

Jim G from Chicago IL on 10/14/2015

These were a great improvement over stock speakers in my 2002 Ford F150 Harley Davidson Edit. (Crewcab). However, I do occasionally listen to music at what some people would consider insane volume levels, and at some point right before "wow, thats loud" these speakers start to distort a bit and cancel out the low/mid bass...which, I guess you can expect from speakers that cost this much. If youre an audiophile and like to listen to music loud, Id pass on these and get something else. But if youre an average joe who just wants a pair of speakers that will outperform your stock speakers (in mids and highs at least) then you really cant beat these for the price.

Pros: Cheap price, excellent mids and highs

Cons: Bass quality goes down the higher you turn them up.

First time installing new hardware/sound in a vehicle. Instructions we solid, though a few specifics weren't there. Sound them through a simple search on YouTube. Sound is good overall and clearer with more mids and highs. Bass isn't strong but wasn't needed. Plus I'm just running through an aftermarket stereo, not amp. Overall good product.

Sound great. If you're only going to be cheap and only spend a little money on your listening pleasure, get these. You can't even begin to compare these to stock speakers from a 2001 F350.

Pros: Sound great, fit properly, easy to install, crisp, clean, succulent, rides fine, looks divine

Great Improvement

Josh from Texas on 7/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a huge improvement over stock speakers (for most vehicles). Compared to the originals from a 1998 F-150, the difference is night and day. However, they lack the bass I desired. Compared to the newer sound systems in vehicles (such as Bose or Bang & Olfusen), I would much rather have stock. That is not to say that they are not good, because they are, for most vehicles.

Pros: Material, design, range, high and mid-range.

Cons: Bass is not as present as some would like, others may disagree and say it is plenty.

These speakers are awesome, very clear and sound great. Had them ran off of my new Pioneer radio for a week or so then put an amp in for them. They sounded great off of the radio but with the amp they're much louder. Straight forward installation and perfect fit.

Better than expected

Michael M from Virginia on 7/2/2015

2013 Ford F-150 XLT
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed a pair of these in the front doors of my 2013 F150 Supercab, along with the unmodified factory stereo. Based on other reviews here, I expected I would find them satisfactory, but I was in no way prepared for the difference to be as great as it actually was. These are pretty good speakers for the price! That was a solid upgrade, and worth every penny! I have a bad history with door panels, and I was really reluctant to tear the door panels off my brand new, under-warranty truck. Ford gets more credit for this than Crutchfield, but with Crutchfield's instructions and Ford's engineering, that was pretty ridiculously simple. I had the job done in well under an hour, and everything was a snap together, drop-in, exact fit replacement. Less than 24 hours elapsed between ordering the speakers and listening them them installed, and I didn't have to pay up the bazoo for the fast shipping. I will definitely be doing business with Crutchfield in the future!

Pros: price/performance, ease of installation, quality of workmanship, quality of packaging, sound quality

Cons: the wiring adapters cause you to have to deal with a lot more wire than was originally present, which requires minor consideration

Exceeded my expectations

2010 Mazda 5
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound great. I have a 2010 Mazda 5 and wanted to freshen it up a little decided on keeping the factory GPS head unit and just upgrading the speakers and adding an amp. First I installed the speakers, which really did make a huge improvement in sound. But when I added the Pioneer GM-A4604 amp I was really impressed. Clean sound with crisp highs and nice bass response. I don't have room for a sub, so I wanted some door speakers that still put out decent bass. These were a great fit and have a nice little punch to them. I recommend paring them with an amp.

Pros: Crisp highs, nice bass response, clean sound. Perfect match for the Pioneer GM-A4604. Fit great in my Mazda.

Cons: None.

Read several reviews before choosing these to install in my 2014 Ford F-150. The factor speakers were not great. I listen to every type of music and medium to low volume and but Bluetooth phone mostly, even that was not clear to me. These installed very easy, YouTube "how to" and it took about 10 minutes per door. Very noticeable difference in sound at all levels, especially phone.

Pros: Great sound, easy install and great price. Comes with wire harness.

Cons: Nothing.

replaced the stock speakers with these pioneer speakers. I guess Pioneer stays in business because they have consistently made a nice product over the years. I still have the stock radio but these speakers really made a difference in the sound quality. The Free installation kit and directions from Crutchfield made this a very simple changeout. it took around an hour to have the speakers installed and trying them out. I guess Crutchfield's service through the years speaks for its self, but they really are very easy to deal with.

Pros: simple easy swap out. good price nice sound.

Cons: nothing that I se so far. have been installed for a couple of weeks.

ChrisM from Kansas on 4/27/2015

I bought 2 pair of these locally, as I like to hear them before I buy them. Otherwise, how do you know what they'll sound like, right? I would have bought them from Crutchfield (yay for free speaker adapter wire harnesses), but I didn't want to wait for their super quick shipping AND I can solder my own stuff. Plus I wanted them today. Anyway, these are not listed as fitting the front of a 2003 Expedition. This is correct for out of the box. But, 8 1/8" thick nylon washers (4 for each speaker) from the hardware store and you're golden. You'll need to bend the 2 tabs on each speaker to fit BOTH the front and rear on the Expedition. I used the original screws instead of the provided ones, but it is a tight fit if using the originals. They have a washer type head that is a hair larger than the opening on the speaker. Makes for a secure install though. After upgrading the head unit (Kenwood DPX501BT), I was disappointed in the sound from the OEM speakers and sub. These sounded good in the store, so I bought them. Got them installed and adjusted the levels on the Kenwood and I am now very happy with the upgrades.

Pros: Decent bass and overall sound quality. Inexpensive for the quality of sound. Connecting wires were provided as well as mounting screws.

Cons: None so far. We'll have to see how they hold up long term.

Great Sound, good fit.

2009 Ford Mustang
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2009 Mustang Convertible. Replaced a year old set of 3-way Pioneer speakers that developed a tear in one speaker with these. Only a slight modification needed to the Ford mounting plate. Their sound is a major improvement. However the adaptor harnesses provided were not full assembled, although they appeared to be. The ground wires were not fully seated in their housings and stropped the speakers from originally working. Once they were fully pushed in to fully seat them properly, everything worked great.

Pros: great sound. Easy to install.

Cons: Double check the wire to plug connections on the adaptor harnesses provided. Mine were loose and needed fully seated.

Nice replacement

Great replacement speakers for the stock Ford speakers in the rear of a 2001 extra cab Ranger. Put out good sound from stock radio. Even better with new Pioneer radio also installed. First install took about 20 minutes. Second one about half that! Since I knew what I had to do! Wiring harness made wiring a snap!

Pros: Great sound. Easy to install. Included wiring harness made wiring a snap!

Cons: Didn't quite fit stock speaker grills. Sat about 1/4" to high. Stock screws too short! Included mounting screws too long!! Found a simple solution that worked well.

Way Better then stock!

2010 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a Pioneer and Infinity speaker fan/user over many years and debated on which speaker to install in my 2010 Ford Expedition. I chose both. Huh? First I installed the Pioneer's 6885's in the front and 6845's in the rear. Sound over the factory component speakers was definitely noticeable though something was not right. The 6845's just were not working well in the rear doors. Just were there and nothing more. Ford has a huge opening in the rear doors behind the speaker which may have contributed to their demise. I placed the Infinity Reference X REF-8602cfx in the front and the 6885s' in the rear. Sounded better but the Infinity's solid mid/high 8602's were just dominating the sound and could not achieve much from the low end even though I have sub in the rear. I did a quick exchange of the right side speakers (Infinity LF & RR, Pioneer RF & LR) and to my surprise it worked extremely well. Was getting quality sound from the high end to the low. The Pioneers IMO have a much wider range than the Infinity's. They definitely do not over power in any one area as does the Infinity's do with their mid range. Bottom Line, Pioneers are a great all around sounding speaker not dominating in any one area of sound. In other words, a can't go wrong choice.

Pros: Great overall sounding speaker. Solid in all ranges of sound. Solid lows, mids, and highs. Not an overwhelming speaker but just solid sound. May eventually need a subwoofer/amp but to each their own. Easy to install instructions and great help from Crutchfield customer service people.

Cons: None at this point.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in the front doors of my 2005 Ranger 4x4 XLT Sup cab 2 door. I previously installed 40CS684 Kickers in the rear. I am powering all these speakers with a JVC head unit. First off the installation could not have been easier. The speaker wire adapters were perfect. The original front speaker had seen better days so I had no doubt these new speakers would sound better. The amount of improvement caught me by surprise though. The speakers have more than enough range for me to tailor the sound to my liking even at relatively high volume levels. I am very please with this upgrade. I did install XTC 6"x8" Speaker Baffles to protect these new speakers. The original speakers showed signs of getting wet. I had no problem with these fitting as my truck does not have power windows so there was nothing to interfere with them.

Pros: Easy installation, great sound, and great price. Getting the instructions on how to remove the door panels and the adapter wires made this a fast easy and great sounding upgrade.

Cons: None at this time.

15 minute install = a world of difference in sound.

Ibanez from Bixby, OK on 2/12/2015

2007 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

From unboxing to full install with the speaker covers back on the door took 15 minutes. The difference in sound would make it worth it even if it took 15 hours. I installed these in the front of a 2007 F-150 Supercrew and the difference was immediately noticeable. Anyone with one of these trucks knows how bad the stock speakers sound so if you are in the market you can't go wrong with these. I'm still deciding on a new head unit, likely one with GPS, and rear speakers but I am fully satisfied with these speakers in the front. As good as they sound with the stock head unit I can't wait to hear what they will sound like with a better unit and an amp.

Pros: Greatly improved sound. Hearing mids and highs I never heard with the stock front speakers. Bass seems improved as well, but not as dramatically as the mids and highs. Fit was perfect once I snipped off the two tabs that I'm supposing are for a 5x7 install rather than a 6x8 install.

Cons: None

Good replacement for factory speakers on 2002 Ford Explorer. Direct bolt in, perfect fit. Crutchfield supplied adapters made wiring plug and play. Two install tips: 1. There are no clips on the door panels, 2 or 3 screws and the whole things lifts off. 2. Make sure you tie up the wires on the rear doors, they will easily catch on the glass as it moves.

Pros: Much better than stock, if you still have stock speakers 10+ years later go buy there!.

Cons: None!

A great buy especially if you're sick of your factory speaker's sound. These speakers put out a nice crisp array of highs, as well as clear midrange for voices, with a solid bass hit. Of course its not the BOOM of a sub woofer, but they definitely make the perfect sidekick for a sub woofer. The price was extremely affordable, that's why I bought two sets. Installed in the front and rear doors. My sound quality is amazing, and since I listen to everything from jazz to hip hop, to classic rock, I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again.

Pros: great sound quality, very affordable, came with installation extras for free. great tech support if I needed it.

Cons: none comes to mind

4 Pioneer TS-A6885R Speakers, '99 F-150

Logan from Tulsa, OK on 8/12/2014

These speakers are solid. They are my first experience in aftermarket car speakers, but I am a sound engineer so audio is not in any way foreign to me. I had gotten the truck with the stock speakers and tape deck stereo. So far this is my first upgrade to my system. I plan on adding a sub and a 5 channel amp in the near future, however. The speakers, being 4 way, have an abundance of high frequencies, almost to the point of annoyance when not on the highway. The bass is about as lacking as you would expect from small speakers, but there is plenty for a pleasant listening experience. I listen to a lot of classical music in the car, and these do a fairly decent job of highlighting all of the instrumentation and dynamic details. They are a little muddy around the mid-highs, but it's not bad at all. They have lowered the distortion coming from my stock stereo but it is still very much present at higher volumes, especially with the bass turned up. All this being said, these speakers have done an excellent job at producing a high quality sound in my truck, and they are a significant improvement. There is no need for any sort of fancier speaker. These do exactly what I need them to.

Pros: Good sound easy install plenty of high frequencies

Cons: not the clearest in the world low stereo image improvement distorted bass response

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield, thank you for such a good product at a reasonable price far a radio and speakers. I have a 2006 Mustang GT and I needed to replace my factory radio. The Ford dealer gave me a price which was quit-a-bit higher than your radio. So I decided that I would replace my radio and speakers. Your price was still less. In June of 2014 I bought your "Kenwood DPX500BT" and "Pioneer TS-D6802R", and "Pioneer TS-A6885R" Speakers. Before I place my order I called in to your technicians for advice on my set up. I was going to get all 4 Pioneer TS-D6802R for my car, and that is when the technician advised me that those speakers would not fit in the front, but ok for the back. With that in mind he and I came to the decision of the Pioneer TS-A6885R speakers for the front door. WOW they are great. In the reviews that I read when I was narrowing down my speakers, there were comments that the speakers were a little weak on BASS. Let me tell you with my setup they are great, and have plenty of BASS, enough to rattle my windows at ½ volume. Treble is great too. I just wanted to say that my combination is a GREAT setup for me and my car. I will say that my Mustang was a little more difficult to install than I expected. Ford does not make it easy to take out and reinstall the speakers; I had to take apart just about the entire inside to install them.

Pros: Great Speakers, Good Sound and Instruction for Installation were very correct and helpful

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these speakers along with a Pioneer stereo for my son's 1994 Mustang GT. Installation of the speakers was a breeze once you get the door panels and rear deck off with the adapter included by Crutchfield. For 4x8 speakers, it is increasable how great they sound, how loud they plan and how much bass they put out. Picked them up for about $60 while on sale at Crutchfield with the adapters, which is pretty close to Amazon. Extremely happy with the purchase.

Pros: Sound great, easy to install and play pretty loud.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a great value. Crisp highs and thunderous lows at higher volume levels. The low volume response is a but underpowered and would benefit from an amplifier but overall very pleased. I will be purchasing another pair for the door panels to replace the tired factory speakers as these were a perfect fit for my 97 Ford Taurus.

Pros: Excellent sound quality when driven by sufficient power. Fantastic value product.

Cons: Sound is a bit muddy when underpowered.

Bought speakers to install while I had door panels off for lock button repair on 1999 Super Duty. Glad I did because 15 yr old original speakers had no foam left on them. (couldn't handle any volume which is a necessity to drown out diesel noise. New speakers went in with no fuss with supplied adapters, and sound great with the factory radio/cd player.

Pros: cost, ease of installation, sound.

Cons: none

George from Ontario on 4/21/2014

Purchase these to replace the horrible OEM speakers in a '13 Mazda 3 which made lots of bass but sounded very muddy. Installation was straight forward in the rear doors. Ended up only replacing the rears because the new speakers fixed the issue with the mids and highs.

Pros: Crisp, clear mids and highs. Vocals are much, much better that with OEM speakers

Cons: Doesn't make much bass at all (no issue if you are have a subwoofer in your build). So much so, that I ended up keeping the OEM speakers in the fronts.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

my review this product is very good after using sound deadener on my doors and covering up all the possible wholesaler there these speakers perform very well and have a very good bass reflection into the doors there's a good thump it with the songs that are played in the residents of the base is very good I am running a stock head unit that came from factory on my truck and it blows the doors of my truck it's that good I would suggest to get the speakers to upgrade from stock in the sensitivity is superb you barely have to turn it up and you get lots of noise lots of sound lots of bass

Pros: Very easy to install bass is superb for what you have all four ranges are the four ways they showed up in all areas of the music you hear everything in the songs that you play and the bass is still there even when you turn it up on the high end it's awesome the Pioneer speakers the four way are the way to go and the head unit that I have its stock and I was blown away how the speakers were so sensitive to that unit the pros works great. With a stock unit get the speakers they're worth It.

Cons: the grill plates that they say that fit the speakers they really don't fit they have a gap there and its best just to not use them do just fine without them in the doors actually they look cooler without the plates that's the only Con's. There. Would be.

Ended up installing in front doors of 2006 Ford Freestyle. Pioneer labels the speaker as custom fit for Ford, Mazda and Nissan. This is very true for Ford. Easy install from start to finish. Crutchfield provided all needed parts and information. Speakers give nice clear full range of sound, powered by the stock Ford radio-CD player. Bass was good, along with the midrange sounds. Treble-high sounds are distinct. We usually listen at low to moderate volume. In testing at full power, the supertweeter got a little shrill, but we do not crank this high for regular listening. A great improvement from the 8 year old OEM speakers. Should have done this sooner!

Speakers sound great! Good price for such a great sound!

Pros: Great sound - HUGE improvement over stock speakers. (2001 Toyota Tacoma)

Cons: Speakers were marked as matching for my vehicle. But the plastic holes/boxes in the doors were a bit too small for them. Instead of trimming the boxes, I used my own screws that had a larger head on them so they would stay in contact with the slotted mounting holes in the speakers. They almost sit flush (about 1/8"-1/4" off from flush) but are secure and sound great compared to the stock stuff. My door and panel design do not do these speakers justice. But I just crank it up and let 'em rip!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put a pair of these in the front doors of my '03 F250 PowerStroke. These are the first aftermarket speakers I have bought. I got them on Black Friday for a great sale price. I was looking for something to boost clarity, volume, and add a little bit of bass. I basically wanted some budget upgrade speakers. These fit the bill perfectly. They sound great and don't distort the sound at all. They were a direct fit for my truck and were very simple to install even for a first timer. Shipping and packaging from Crutchfield was great. For what it's worth, I put the Pioneer TS-A874M 3-way speakers in the rear doors and they complement each other nicely. I'd recommend both speakers to anyone looking to upgrade their old, tired, stock speakers for a reasonable price.

Pros: Quality product, great sound, clear, good range, loud, adds a decent amount of bass over stock, great price, wire harness included, easy install (direct fit), free shipping

Cons: Kind of tight fit in the front doors, very close to the grille so you may get some rattle at first until it's settled - mine rattled for about a week then stopped

N from Miami on 7/20/2013

Installed these speakers in a 2011 Mustang GT500 with the stock Shaker 500 system. Install was super easy, (I already had the aftermarket harness) and they sound head and tails above what the factory sounded like. Nice crisp highs, and decent midrange. These will really shine once I get my Kenwood system in. I recommend them, and for Mustang owners, I suggest that just changing the front speakers will get the job done.

Pros: Crisp highs, good midrange, bass helps compliment the door subs. Great sound even with the stock H/U

Cons: None really.....well the screws I receive sort of suck, to long for the door fitment, but you should re-use your stock screws anyway.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2004 Freestar. They are powered by a Sony WX- GT80UI headunit. First I installed them in the front doors, they fit but I could not tighten the bolts due to the way the door was designed and it made the door rattle. (Ford's fault, not crutchfields). They fit better in the back plus I could tighten them down. I set the fader to the rear a little, turned the volume up and wow! These pioneers rocked! I listen to classic rock and classic metal. The guitar solos are great and the kick drum will shake your rearview mirror. You will need a sub if you must shake your whole car. I recommend a aftermarket headunit or external amp to get the most out of these speakers.

Excellent 4 way speakers, I installed these speakers on my 2011 Mustang Convertible, powered them with the Pioneer GM-6500F amp and they sound great. They reproduce excellent music quality and enough bass in my opinion, for someone looking for alot of bass from just the speakers, then other speakers might be a better option, or just add a subwoofer. Would recomend these Pioneer speakers to others.

Pros: Great design. Excellent music quality reproduction. Good value.

Cons: None I can think off.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Most aftermarket stereos will certainly work with these speakers. They are rated to work between 5 and 60 watts RMS power and most aftermarket stereos are rated between 14-22 watts RMS. Adding a 4 channel amplifier to your system will certainly deliver power and clarity and drive the speakers to their potential. For an example, sticking with Pioneer, they have the GM-A6604 which would be a perfect match for those speakers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jun 13, 2014 ]  Staff
