Our take on the Pioneer TS-A874M

You jump in your ride and turn on your favorite song — you're straining to hear the snare drum, but it's still just barely audible. And that dull, fuzzy-sounding bass guitar is just about breaking your heart. Pioneer TS-A Series speakers bring your music back into focus with precise, superior reproduction of instruments and vocals, so all those details you love will really pop.

A big jump in sound quality

You jump in your ride and turn on your favorite song — you're straining to hear the snare drum, but it's still just barely audible. And that dull, fuzzy-sounding bass guitar is just about breaking your heart. Pioneer TS-A Series speakers bring your music back into focus with precise, superior reproduction of instruments and vocals, so all those details you love will really pop.

Better bass and more focused midrange details

Pioneer's TS-A874M 3-way speakers feature a 5"x7"/6"x8" woofer with a stiff Aramid-reinforced polypropylene cone that ensures clarity in your music's bass and percussion. The highly elastic polymer surround helps keep cone movement under control, for smooth, tight bass. A 1-5/8" paper cone fills in all the midrange details for lush vocals and natural-sounding instruments.

Pioneer TS-A874M car speakers

The midrange cone and dome tweeter complement the big bass from the large woofer cone.

Natural sound

The PET dome tweeter delivers crisp treble response, so you'll hear all the overtones that give your music ambiance. The built-in crossover ensures that the right frequencies go to the tweeter, midrange cone, and woofer, so your music sounds natural, just as the artist intended.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, but needed to be trimmed with a grinder cut off wheel to fit in the modified rear speaker location of my VW Golf 2. Also new mounting holes had to be drilled through what was left of the speaker and speaker location.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Some modification needed for VW Golf 2 installation.

Great upgrade over the stock full-range speakers for my daughter's car. With the guide provided by Crutchfield, installation was quick and easy. Took me less than 15 minutes to replace the two speakers in the rear quarter panels. No amp, just power from head unit and they sound great.

Pros: Ease of installation Great Sound

Cons: None

Best pick for quality and value

Ron U. from Suisun City on 3/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in place of the stock speakers (4) in my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. It brought the Pioneer receiver that I installed last year to life. I thought it already sounded good when I installed it, but these speakers brought it to the next level. I had planned to install an amp and subwoofer at a later date, but now I don't think I need to.

Pros: Exellent balance of base/mid/treble.

Cons: None

Best speakers I have ever purchased

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound excellent! I have a f150 and they fit perfectly, but I had to cut off one little metal piece. No big deal, just took a couple seconds. The base is excellent! I just can't help my self to turn my music up all the way with the windows down and show off my speakers. You won't regret buying these speakers. Trust me

Pros: Sound excellent Perfect bass Crystal clear

Cons: Had to cut a little metal piece off to get them to fit, but only took a couple seconds for each.

2008 Ford Focus
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Completely satisfied with these speakers. A Crutchfield rep recommended these speakers for my front doors on my Focus, and Pioneer two ways for the rear. He knew I didn't want to spend a lot of money and that I already had an eight inch bazooka tube. He was right. For the price I paid, I don't think I could be happier. They sound great. Much better than my factory speakers which I thought sounded good, until I powered these up.

Pros: Price, performance, installation.

Cons: None yet.

2004 Mazda 3
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this for my 2004 Mazda 3S and let me just say that it was a much needed upgrade. The speakers were about 10 years old when I bought the car and it was pretty obvious. Not to say they were bad, I was actually impressed they held up as well as they did. But regardless, I always feel the need to renovate my car. The installation was easy as any other set of speakers would be. The sound quality, while not exactly mind blowing, was pretty impressive when you consider the price. I am very happy with them so far.

Pros: Good quality for the price Easy installation Extremely clear highs and decently low bass

Cons: The quality, while good, could be better

Very accurate warm sound on factory radio!

V8toilet from Worcester, MA on 2/15/2014

2012 Mazda 5
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these Pioneers (front and rear) into my 2012 Mazda 5 and couldn't be happier with their sound performance. They have a very natural warm clean sound to them and I'm only running these off the factory radio. I can't imagine what they might sound like with a proper amplifier. I paired these with a JL Audio 10" sealed subwoofer (also bought here) and this system rocks. For reference I have Polk dxi 6500 Components with 100 watts RMS up front, Polk dxi 6.5"s coaxial's in the rear with 60 watts RMS, and a JL Audio micro-sub in my CX5. Although my system in the CX5 does sound better it's not by much and considering the huge power difference that's amazing. I had to keep jumping from my CX5 to my Mazda 5 to hear the small difference. These Pioneers have exceeded my expectations and my wife is in love with them. If you don't want to spend a lot of money on amplifiers than buy these and get the JL Audio CS110-WXv2 subwoofer and a decent 150 watt RMS amplifier. This combination is an unbeatable great sounding system for the Mazda 5 or any vehicle.

Pros: These are a steal at this price point and the features on them compare to high priced speakers. I generally don't like Pioneer sound but these Pioneers have given me new respect for their speakers. The paper cone midrange and PET tweeter really bring out the vocal clarity in these speakers.

Cons: Honestly I can't think of anything.

OK sound, Did not fit without modification...

2001 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are an ok replacement speaker... They did NOT fit my 2001 Tacoma like Crutchfield said they would. Had to cut the door mount plastic as the speaker bucket was too large. These sound pretty tinny and not much bass. Now that I have paired with aftermarket head unit and an actual subwoofer they sound ok as a whole system.

Pros: Cheap, good highs and some mids.

Cons: Not much bass at all, tinny, does not fit 01 Tacoma like stated.

2003 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I put these in the rear doors of my '03 F250 PowerStroke. I put the Pioneer TS-A6885R 4-way speakers in the front doors. They complement each other nicely. The price is great on these speakers. They're the first aftermarket speakers (along with the ones I got for the front) that I've bought. Both were great choices. It was incredibly easy to install even for someone who has never done it before. Shipping was fast and free, and the harness was included thanks to Crutchfield. These speakers add a lot of clarity, volume, a bit of bass, and consistency to my music (mainly metal, country, and rock). I would recommend this speaker and the ones I got for my front doors to anyone looking to replace their old stock speakers for some quality upgrade speakers for a fair/minimal price.

Pros: Quality product, great sound, clear, good range, loud, adds a decent amount of bass over stock, great price, wire harness included, easy install (direct fit), free shipping

Cons: None that I can think of

I installed these in the front doors of our 2010 Mazda CX-9, and they are a big improvement over the stock speakers! The sound is much more clear throughout the entire range, and the bass is no longer muddy. I would say that these are the best value out there! I'll be replacing the rear door speakers with another pair of these.

Put these into a 2013 Ford Superduty. Great improvement over the factory speakers. More bass and far clearer sound - exactly what I was looking for and at a great price. Upgrading the speakers in these Fords is almost a necessity. Ford should be ashamed of themselves, especially on vehicles with stickers north of $60K. Easy install too.

Product Research

Woofers: Each woofer cone is carbon graphite with interlaced aramid fiber IMPP (Injection Molded Polypropylene). With long aramid fibers interlaced inside, this carbon graphite IMPP cone design provides the strength and rigidity powerful bass requires.

Surrounds: For durability and a smooth response, each woofer uses a rubber (synthetic) surround.

Midranges: Each speaker has a 1-5/8" paper cone midrange with a 0.7 ounce Strontium magnet.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 3/8" dome tweeter made from PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) film for crisp, clear highs.

Custom Fit: The speaker's frame features two additional mounting holes and fits many 6x8 and 5x7 applications. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit.
