Our take on the Pioneer Stage 4 TS-C172PRS

The TS-C172PRS component system features a 6-3/4" woofer with an exceptionally rigid cone made from polypropylene, Aramid fibers, and glass fibers. The woofer's lightweight micro-fiber surround — Pioneer calls it "artificial suede" — holds its shape even when the speaker's driven hard, so you'll enjoy strong, accurate performance. An aluminum center plug improves sound dispersion and dissipates heat for a longer life.

Wide high-frequency performance

Each 1-1/8" polyester soft dome tweeter features a sealed chamber that extends its frequency response much lower than the typical tweeter, for a better transition from the lows to the highs. The lower crossover point also helps to open up the sound as more sonic details are broadcast from the tweeter.

The TS-C172PRS system includes outboard 2-way crossovers built with audiophile-grade components to ensure the highest fidelity. You can choose between two tweeter levels to adjust for the most natural sound in your vehicle. Pioneer put decades of car audio experience to work in creating these components, so power them up with a suitable Pioneer PRS amp and enjoy stunning sound quality as you drive.

Amazing Hi End Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, this speakers are amazing. I replaced my Morel Supremo speakers and after playing the first track I knew I wasn't going back to the Morels. The soundstage got wider, higher and deeper. The highs and bass are clean and very realistic. The music details are so real, that sometimes will make you look around your car. I am not using any type of processors or equalization. The speakers are mounted on the factory location and the tone settings on the radio are off. Even like that I am still getting that beautiful sound. These speakers are really designed for the audiophile. My system consist of an Eclipse head unit CD-8061, PRS-D1200 SPL mono amp, PRS-A900 4 channel amp, pioneer TS-W252PRS subwoofer, Kimber Kable KWIK 12 speaker wires and Stinger interconnects. I highly recommend this speakers!!!

Pros: Sound and Quality!!!!

Cons: None

The last of the best Pioneer speakers.

2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

One of my midbass speakers blew within the first few hours of playing (started rattling, at least) but Crutchfield is replacing it. I am installing these along with the 3" midrange in a 2014 Silverado. Bench testing confirms a member comparison report that these are indeed excellent midbasses. They are capable of more bass than most midranges, though allowing them to go below 70 Hz tends to muddy up the upper-end vocals when at higher volume. I suspect this is why the crossover transitions to the tweeter around 2,000 Hz. I compared these to Audison Voce speakers and they are more bass capable and warmer but perhaps with slightly less detail potential in 2-way form (though the right installation will likely mitigate this). I think that because the tweeter is crossed over so low in the passive crossover that it can get a bit stressed but I am running these active with a processor and have been exploring the 4,500-6,500 range with good results. The tweeter is a very pronounced dome behind a few bars for a grill. These aren't well protected and, as such, are not suitable for an exposed door installation or anywhere where your hands/arms may be or an installation in a vehicle that transports little kids where it won't be behind any sort of grill. Have I heard better speakers? Yes. For the price (with the 3" midrange free from Crutchfield), brand new? Unless we're talking raw drivers, no. Don't see these in competitions but... whatever.

Pros: Warm sound Great bass capability Beautiful crossovers (paperweights for me, though)

Cons: One woofer blew in first few hours (replaced by Crutchfield) Crossovers should be three-way for the 3" midrange Tweeter crossover point ideally just a little higher

Amazing clarity.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Where to begin? Well these components replaced a set of Polk MMs, which weren't bad for their price, but they never had me feeling like I could stay in my vehicle for no reason except to listen to music. These Pioneers, after installing them and giving them a sample, 2 hours later (not really realizing it) I was quite floored by their clean sound. No matter what genre of music I sent to them, they continued in providing aural ecstasy. I'm sure if I had my vehicle setup for SQ they would shine even more. My car is pretty much gutted out as I use it on circuit and as my daily driver, these are real music to my ears. If you're on the fence about picking these up, I can honestly say I doubt you will be disappointed.

Pros: Build quality Sound quality

Cons: Some might say the price, but I can't say that. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. For myself, this is one of those times.

component excellence

jc from 03301 on 12/26/2013

The best sound you will ever get will be from component speakers with the use of crossovers -period

Pros: You cant go wrong with pioneer quality...

Cons: you will want to spend more time in your vehicle than seems normal to others.... people might begin to talk!!

Sound quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is not a technical review. If you are looking at speakers for this price you probably know what you're buying. I was looking for sound quality and this is probably the most impressive product I have ever heard hands-down. I'v been going through all of the songs I thought I knew and re-listening to the details I'd never heard before. Set up with Pioneer DEH-80PRS deck & Helix amps/Helix sub.

Pros: Sound quality, design, materials

Cons: none

IMX Woofer: Pioneer's proprietary 3-Layer IMX (Injection Molded Matrix) cones are rigid yet lightweight; they significantly reduce mid-to-low range distortion and reproduce a natural sound stage. The woofers' set screw terminals accept bare wire up to 12 gauge.

Mounting: Out of the box the TS-C172PRS's woofers are designed to mount in a standard 4-hole 6-3/4" opening. The included adapter brackets allow the woofers to mount in standard 3-hole 6-1/2" and Ford style 4-hole 6-1/2" applications. When top mounting the woofer, the bracket is attached to the bottom of the flange; to bottom mount the woofer, attach the bracket to the top of the flange.

Soft-Dome Tweeter: The TS-C172PRS component set includes two 1-1/8" soft-dome tweeters with dual neodymium magnets (total weight 0.75 ounces). Pioneer extends tweeter performance to a lower frequency than is typical, creating fuller midrange fidelity and clear, accurate vocals.

Mounting: The tweeters can be flush-mounted using the supplied metal clamps. The supplied plastic mounting cups allow you to surface mount the tweeters in an aftermarket location or mount the tweeters in a factory tweeter location behind a factory installed grille. The surface mounting cups let you position the tweeters at one of two angles, approximately 45° or 15°. Once installed, the tweeters do not swivel.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

Factory Mount Angled Surface Mount Flush Mount
Mounting Height N/A 1.627" (15° angle)

Passive Crossover Network: The TS-C172PRS features an audiophile-grade outboard passive crossover module for each woofer/tweeter combination. The crossover modules are 2-way with a crossover point of 1,900 Hz and 12dB/octave slope.

Crossover Connections: The gold-plated set screw input and output terminals will accept bare wire up to 12 gauge. Note: No speaker wire or quick slides are provided with the speakers.

Tweeter Level Control: The crossover provides three tweeter level output options; -3 dB, 0 dB (flat), and +3 dB.

Mounting: There are four supplied self-tapping screws for mounting the crossovers in your vehicle.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 5.25"
  • Height: 3.625"
  • Depth: 3.5" (plus wire thickness)
