Our take on the Pioneer TS-D1602R

Pioneer TS-D1602R

Unleash the power of Basalt

Car audio enthusiasts know that replacing your factory speakers is the first step towards better sound. Pioneer TS-D1602R 2-way speakers sport innovative technologies and materials that'll put your car's sound miles ahead of where it was.

The journey begins with the innovative 6-1/2" woofer — a high-tech composite material made from basalt and Aramid creates a rigid, lightweight cone. This design supplies solid midbass punch with exceptional midrange definition, while its rubber surround ensures smooth cone excursion. A heavy stamped metal basket supports the woofer cone, dampening vibrations and resonances that can unduly color your music's natural sound.

The oversized soft-dome tweeter radiates impressive highs, aided by a special wave guide that improves off-axis performance — meaning you'll get better stereo imaging in more locations throughout your car. A sealed rear chamber allows the tweeter to reach lower into the midrange to improve the definition of vocals and instruments. The tweeter's compact and powerful neodymium magnet provides excellent performance even when the power levels are cranked.

Great sound, low end could use a bit more

2007 Chevrolet Silverado (New Body Style
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2007 Chevy Silverado after blowing the driver door factory speaker (common among Silvys). Very clear sound on the mids and highs, much brighter than the factory speaks. Low end/bass could use a boost, its there but not as pronounced as factory speakers. Turned all the head unit EQ settings (bass, mid, high) 2 clicks down from max to find the right balance. Don't have to turn the volume up as loud now. Would recommend using lower RMS watt speakers (30-45 instead of 60) for the Silverado.

Pros: Bright, cleare mids/highs. Bonus install gear (wire leads/brackets). Super easy to install in my ride (1 hour start to finish). Free 2 day shipping from Crutchfield.

Cons: Bass/low end not at loud/pronounced as the factory original speaker, but I knew that going in.

Worth the money!

TS-D1602R in Fiesta ST

Izzy from Texas on 2/23/2015

I was looking for some 6.5" speakers for my Fiesta ST and came across with the Pioneer TS-D1602R locally in my area. Your site said it would not fit my car. However, the price was less than half your advertised price so I went on a whim and decided to try them. I can confirm these do fit using .5 inch Metra 82-3412 Speaker Mounting Brackets Install 5-1/4" or 6-1/2" speakers in select vehicles Item #: 120823412. They simply have to be modified by cutting one of the 2 longer mounting tabs in half and trimming the door mounting panel about 2mm around.

Pros: Great speakers

Cons: None

Amazing sound for the price!

AutotechSC from columbia sc on 5/30/2014

I'm an installer in SC and have installed many speakers from the cheapest possible to the most expensive sets. I personally have these speakers in my own E46 bmw, you can't beat the sound for the price. I was not a big fan of pioneers before, always a alpine guy. I decided one day when i had down time at work to buy and install these speakers so i can tell my customers about them. I was really impressed by the highs and mids from these speakers.

Pros: Great Price, Easy install, durable, Mids/highs

Cons: The magnet is huge!

really nice speakers

Fantastic sound

William from columbus, oh on 1/9/2014

Fantastic speakers over all. Love the sound for the size. I used these in a 2004 Subaru Legacy and I was engulfed in the sound. It was simply fantastic! I was hearing every high and low as if I was using a set of high end headphones. I put a pair in the front and a pair in the back and they fit with a little tweaking. The speaker in the front passenger side would rattle my door! Overall truly amazing speakers, I suggest them to anyone looking to hype up their sound system.

Installed these babies in a 2007 Toyota Tacoma.... Installed them in the rear.... Love the power that these speakers put out.

Pros: Quality Speakers

Cons: None!!!

Amazing speakers

Aymanf from Reston, VA on 2/26/2011

After installing these speakers I could not believe the details I was missing before, and this is without an amp, just using a 22watt HU. I paired them with the Pioneer TS-D6902R 6"x9" speakers as a full set for the car. Both products are amazing, clear and crisp over the full range. lows, mids, and highs. Also had Dynamat applied on the doors and rear deck, and I'm sure that contributed to the sound quality improvement.

Woofer Cones: The woofers have dual-layer IMX (Injection Molded Matrix) Aramid/Basalt fiber composite cones. The Basalt fiber is made from natural rock and is interwoven with aramid fiber. This Aramid/Basalt fiber surface layer material is very rigid and maintains an accurate, detailed music reproduction.

Butyl Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use butyl rubber surrounds.

1-1/8" Soft Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1-1/8" polyester soft dome tweeter with magnetic fluid and a 0.4 ounce Neodymium magnet. The tweeters are encased in a specially-designed anti-resonant sealed rear chamber. The waveguides in front of the tweeters provide wide sound dispersion.

Tweeter Enclosure: The rear chamber tweeter enclosure extends mid-range frequency for improved vocal imaging and staging.

Glass-Imide Voice Coil Bobbins: Each speaker has a Glass-Imide Voice Coil Bobbin for higher power handling.

Built-in 2-Way Crossovers: A 12 dB/octave high-pass filter and 6 dB/octave low-pass filter are attached to each speaker to improve the transition from mid to high frequency. Audiophile-grade capacitors and inductors are used.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in standard 6-1/2" openings, 4-hole 6-1/2" openings, or 6-3/4" openings.
