Pioneer 5-1/4" Speakers

Austin from Wisconsin on 12/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these to replace the completely blown infinities on a 2002 Dodge Durango in the front. These speakers were a definite improvement, but they didn't have a lot of proving to do over the old speakers. Bass is okay, perhaps a little distortion at upper middle-higher volumes. Otherwise they are very clear, punchy little speakers, especially for their size and being run off the stock head unit. I paired these with the larger 6-1/2" Pioneers in the rear doors, and those really sound great. Installation was tricky. I needed to modify the brackets that came with it in order to get them to fit correctly, and you must make sure that you use the factory mounting piece that is stuck to the old speakers in the door as well as the mounting bracket, or you will not get all of the sound you should be getting. Trust me, we found out the hard way. If I had to do it all over again, I'd say I would have liked to drop a little more money on a pair that could handle a more power, but otherwise I am satisfied. I enjoy listening to music once again. As always, awesome customer service from Crutchfield. I will shop here again without a doubt.

Pros: Very clear, full sound for size.

Cons: Wish they could handle more power. Some distortion at louder volumes. Needed to make modifications to fit correctly.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Cheap, well built, great sound and a direct replacement with a very good fit. I have an older pickup with a whipped out factory radio. Replaced it and the speakers and have better sound than it ever was. These arent going to rock you out of your ride, but if you want your aging drivers sound to be better than it ever was.... CHEAP, than these are for you. Havent had any problems at all. They mounted easily, and dont rattle or vibrate at all. Perfect for what they are.

Pros: Easy installation with no modification. CHEAP, but well built. Better than stock sound.

Cons: Not the loudest, but they arent advertised to be, if thats what you want, keep shopping.

Couldn't be easier

Great speakers for the money. So easy to install my wife could have done it. Took less than 30 mins for both door speakers.

Pros: Installation was dummy proof

Cons: Can't think of any

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this set of speakers with the hopes of having a decent replacement for my blown factory speakers, with the help of all the positive reviews. I read the negative reviews stating bass was not a strong quality of this speaker, figuring that referred to some rap or R&B music only. I was wrong, these speakers rattled and sounded blown from the minute they were installed, whether it was talk radio or classic rock(The Doors, etc). If you listen to music with any hint of bass I would stay away from these speakers.

Pros: Installation

Cons: Poor quality

expected better sound quality

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install is pretty basic like any other speaker, paired these with a brand new Sony Head unit and the sound quality is no better that the 15 year old OEM speakers that came in my Toyota 4runner. I was pretty disappointed in the sound quality when I have the volume up past 20. Which I can barely hear with all the windows open. With the volume down, they sound alright, I can't use most of the preset equalizer settings because I'm afraid to blow these speakers. I would not buy these again. I'll spend my money on Alpine.

Pros: Good fitment, easy install.

Cons: Bad sound quality.

The speakers sound great. Crutchfield had a good deal going to buy the cd/DVD player an get 20 or 30% off speakers that you buy also. They matched up the door speakers good, all of them fit my door as they should. Overall a good buy, I would recommend to others

I bought these speakers with the Pioneer FH-X700BT deck to upgrade my factory BOSE system, and I couldn't be happier! The sound is crisp and clear. With all of the free gear, installation was a breeze. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a inexpensive, great sounding upgrade to their factory system. Also, my whole order arrived at my office in less than 5 days. Gotta love it!

Pros: Free installation gear, quality sound, inexpensive.

Pros: Good sound, clear. Good price.

Cons: Not much bass. Not very powerful.

Alright, not the best

Tristan D from Atlanta, Georgia on 5/13/2014

These speakers are alright. Like others have said, they provide great high sounds but they DO NOT have any bass whatsoever. I would personally recommend combining these speakers with a sub if you are considering purchasing them at all. Whenever a song comes on that has just a little bass, they get scratchy and you can't turn them up loud. On my iPhone, I have to turn Bass Reducer on in the EQ to allow me to listen to music. Overall, the highs are good. As for the lows and mids, well there just isn't any.

Pros: Great clarity in high sounds. They get pretty loud and stay clear (as long as there is no bass)

Cons: little boom

Fred from Chesapeake, Va. on 3/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these to replace the dash speakers in an 04 Dodge Caravan. The factory dash speakers are a strange 2" (+/-) size mounted in a 5.25" plate to act as a tweeter. Compared to the factory dash speaker, the highs are very clear and far superior to the factory units. The install is simple as I did not need tools to access the speakers, only a screw driver to remove/install them. The only disappointment was that Crutchfield did not have an adapter for the factory wiring, so I had to cut the factory connector to install the new speakers. NOTE: The factory speaker was 8 Ohms, and these speakers are 4 Ohms.

Pros: Clear highs better sound

Cons: Lack of an available factory harness adapter.

It was a good choice to replace the stock speakers in my wife's 2000 Jeep Wrangler. It has an aftermarket stereo but I am not sure it can push them as very hard. An amp would probably make them sound better.

I purchased these speakers to replace my cheap rear factory speakers when I was upgrading my system. I have a good Pioneer receiver and these speakers did sound a bit better than stock but once I hooked up a amplifier they really came to life. So far being amplified they sound great and are holding up well.

Pros: Low cost and sound great with a amplifier, they hold up well and bring out the sound.

Cons: Need to be amplified to really bring out the detail in music.

TomB from Amity, PA on 5/22/2013

These little fellas sound GOOD!!! Some of the previous reviews beat these little speakers up pretty bad. I just installed a pair in my Jeep cherokee(front doors) and powered them with a Sound Ordinance M-4050. With 50 watts RMS going to each speaker they are being pushed..that is for sure. Keep in mind..speakers this size were never intended to produce large quantities of bass....plain and simple. Put them in a simple system with a Sub and amp, use the crossover to keep the low frequencies for the sub and these suckers BLAST out the mids and Highs. My sister is tossing around the possibility of me installing a small system in her Focus. You should have seen her reaction when she put her favorite CD (Kenny G's Titanic Sound track) in my Jeep. the sound quality made the hairs on the back of my neck stand straight up and tingle(while smiling ear to ear) and I don't even like that kind of music. You wouldn't believe the sound of that saxophone thru these speakers. I would buy them again in a heart beat!!

Pros: Stunning Mids and Highs.

Cons: None to speak of

The speakers sound really good for the price. They were easy to install besides taking off the door panels in the front and rear cab. Other than that it was a easy installation. I bought a Pioneer CD Player so I'm interested to see how it sounds together. The factory CD player didn't produce much of a sound system like I had wanted it to so that's why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.

Pros: Good quality, easy to install.

Cons: Wished there was more wattage.

Mohamed from Albany, NY on 2/26/2013

So I bought these as a replacement in my 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. My stock speakers were blown. All four of them. So I replaced all four speakers with these. I was skeptical but decided to get them anyway. The brackets are a pain in butt. I hated them. But the speaker itself sounded nice. I enjoy listening to them loudly. They are hooked up with a stock deck and amp. The only con is that high volume+high bass makes them sound a little distored(DUBSTEP MUSIC). But I don't care they were not meant to be top of the line speakers.

Pros: Sound Quality, Looks, Price, Shipping Speed

Cons: The brackets are the biggest pain ever.

I don't need base I have quite a subwoofer so it works well... However, NO SPEAKER COVERS??? WHAT THE HECK... WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO DO WITH NO SPEAKER COVERS?

Pros: Good mid and high

Cons: No speaker covers???

Don't bother

Mike from Florida on 12/25/2012

A Crutchfield advisor recommended these speakers as replacements for my 2001 toyota camry rear speakers (6x9 JBL). The speakers are a waste of money and would be better suited for a go kart. The brackets they supply are flimsy and 2 of the holes needed to be redrilled.

Pros: at they look good

Cons: sound quality

Great for the price

Ben from Ohio on 10/7/2012

I bought these speakers about a month ago. These speakers are alot better than the 12 year old infinity stock speakers my eclipse had. For the price these speakers are not a bad investment! They produce good sound and are deffenenty worth the price! I have 2 12 kickers and when the bass hits i can beraly hear the music! Also i have to have my pioneer head unit around 35/62 to have a desent loudness and be able to hear them!

Pros: Clear Cheap

Cons: No bass Not loud enough for me

Waste of Money

Nigel D from Michigan on 9/11/2012

Dont waste your money on these just spend the extra money and get Polk or Infinity. When I unpluged these my bass sounded much better with just the front speakers only OEM is better.

Pros: Deep Bass sounds descent, but all other bass is distorted. High/Mid is good.

Cons: these well bring your overall sound down. Don't replace OEM with these.

Good N Cheap mid/Highs

1995 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the factory head and speakers in a 95 Volvo. These were what i decided on after about an hour of comparing. Completely satisfied. My unit has a subwoofer preamp, which i used to add the low end of sound. The speakers themselves aren't too bad, but as the volume goes up, so does the bass distortion. Set your unit to turn down bass and up mid/high, and get a seperate sub (my self powered 8" rounded nicely.)

Pros: good sound, great for mid / high range when paired with a powered sub or component setup

Cons: bass distortion at moderate to high volume, need a sub, but even a cheapy self powered sub will solve it.

Pros: ahhhh they make noise ., but just not very good with music , maybe if you listen to talk radio

Cons: not worth it , you can find better if you try

Decent upgrade to factory

Damien from San Antonio, TX on 3/25/2012

I purchased these for my 1993 Mercedes 190E. I thought these would be a decent upgrade from the OE speakers, and they were. Thats all they were. At higher volumes the speakers distorted really badly and would make listening to music a nuisance. I wasnt bumping my stereo, I just wanted to put them to use. The highs were there, mids were being drowned out by the distorted bass notes. I fixed that issue with high pass filters and they helped, the speakers sounded much clearer. But the draw back was that they were no where near as loud as before. Now I had to have the stereo at higher volumes. I wouldnt recommend these speakers, but if you want something to cheap to upgrade your factory speakers then go again.

Pros: Better highs than factory Not too deep so theyll fit Decent upgrade from OEM

Cons: They sound terrible at higher volumes. Im not talking about max, but higher than normal. Bass notes distort the other notes

A complete disappointment as solo speakers.

Eric from Vancouver, WA on 3/20/2012

2010 Mazda 3
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I opted for these 5-1/4" speakers to replace the 6x8" stock speakers in my 2010 Mazda 3 because both Crutchfield and Amazon said that only 5-1/4" would fit. After pulling off my panels (thanks to Crutchfield's awesome Mastersheets), I saw why - the stock speakers' wiring harnesses were on the front of the speaker, not the rear, making the mounting hole EXACTLY 6x8" with no room for wiring. Against my better judgment, I installed the 5-1/4" Pioneers instead of stopping right there and returning them (which I should have). The Pioneers are terrible replacements for stock speakers if you don't intend to install subwoofer. Their highs are great, and they actually have decent bass hits, the problem is they have almost no midrange. I tested them by listening to a variety of songs including some with driving bass-lines, and it was like huge parts of the songs were missing. Their midranges are so bad, in fact, that I preferred my stock speakers to these. If I was looking at installing a more well-rounded setup with an amplifier and subwoofer, these might make a good supportive set. On their own as full-replacement speakers, I recommend looking elsewhere in Crutchfield's offerings... anywhere else. At first I marked these down for 2 stars, but seeing as how others have given them 5, I'm handicapping my rating down to 1 star. People really need to know how bad these are as stock replacements.

Pros: + Clear highs with crisp treble sound. + Decent bass punches for that periodic "boom boom boom."

Cons: - Terrible with consistent bass lines. - Sounds as though entire elements of my music are missing. - Not an all-around replacement solution for stock speakers.

These made the sound coming from the rear doors in my Saturn L100 dramatically better! There is a lot more bass coming from the doors than with the OEM speakers. I didn't use a speaker adapter to install them. I lined them up with the seal for the OEM speakers and drilled four holes in the door to mount them. I've tried Pioneer 5 1/4" speakers in the past and they always seem just a little bit too small. These are also smaller than OEM but they still worked with the seal from OEM so I have no complaints.

Pros: Sound

Cons: Maybe too small

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After speaking with a product tech I was told this would be a direct fit replacement (and it was). However, I now wish I had gone with the 6 1/2" that was the same size as the stock AC Delco. The 6.5 was the same price. If you have the room, go with the larger size and don't be disappointed.

Pros: This product installed easily with the hardware Crutchfield included. The speaker is better than stock.

Cons: It just seemed too small after installed. It sounded better than stock (not a difficult feat) but lacked the "umph" I was hoping for.

I'm sorry but I installed them right away and don't remember what size the magnet was. [ SAMUEL  May 27, 2014 ]
Yes. 6.5 will be louder, better bass, just BETTER. 5 1/4 are fine, but if you can mount them, the 6.5 are far better. [ JOHN P  Jan 27, 2014 ]
Yes, these should work fine with your DEH-150MP. If your car can take the 6 1/2" speaker size, you should go with that size, as you will get better bass reproduction than with the smaller speaker size. The Crutchfield car configurator will let you know what size your car can take. [ Damian  Jan 20, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Jan 13, 2014 ]  Staff
