Decent at low volumes

richard from California on 9/4/2017

These were a replacement for Pioneer TS-MR 165 speakers which I had installed in my patio island. The 165's rubber gave out after 8 or so years and as I was happy with them I figured the new speakers would be equally great. Wrong. They sound good at half volume but over that distortion sets in. Problem is due to the 30 w maximum rating. You can't add an amp due to this issue as well. I have Polk DB 651 speakers in my boat with an amp and they kick butt for the same price. The 4 Pioneers look nicer installed in the island which was another reason for the initial purchase. Bottom line is they sound good with deep bass as long as you don't crank them.

Pros: Good bass & treble at low to moderate volume

Cons: Can't crank them nor add an amp

Great speakers for outside on my travel trailer

Tim from Kirksville, MO on 3/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers perform way above their price point. I had previously tried two other brands of marine speakers for the exterior of my travel trailer, and both sounded crappy and then went belly up after just a couple of road trips. After reading the other reviews of these speakers, I bought a pair and installed them where the others had been. They sound awesome compared to the others. The bass response for these 6 1/2" speakers is terrific. Much better than I had expected. And you can crank them up much louder than the previous ones with no distortion. They've been on one extended week-long road trip and weathered at least 6 solid days of storms and blowing rain and still are working great. I'm extremely pleased with them.

Pros: Great bass output Great volume without distortion. Excellent frequency range Clear highs

Cons: If I'd known how good these are, I'd have bought a larger set.

I bought these speakers to replace Kenwood 6.5 inch speakers on my Grady White. I picked these because of the 91 db sensitivity since I don't have an external amplifier. I believe the Kenwoods were 84 db. These play louder and clearer and can handle a bump in bass. Even my wife noticed the difference. Replacement was easy and took only 15 minutes. They use the same mounting holes as the previous speakers. Very satisfied with this purchase.

These speakers were incredibly clear and undistorted at the loud play levels required on the water. They represent a good buy.

Hands-on research

Product Research

UV- and Water-Resistant: These marine speakers feature UV- and water-resistant white grilles, composite speaker baskets, injection-molded polypropylene cones, rubber woofer surrounds, PEI semi-dome tweeters, and stainless steel mounting hardware.

Injection-molded Polypropylene (IMPP) Woofers: Each woofer is constructed from injection-molded polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. In addition, the cones are lightweight and rigid for decreased distortion and superior bass response. For a smoother response and increased durability, each woofer uses a rubber surround.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 1" PEI semi-dome tweeter. PEI (Poly-Ether Imide) is a polymer that has ideal sound characteristics, making it perfect for use as a tweeter. A PEI semi-dome tweeter produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Yes, you could install these easily in a car or truck. They will work just fine with OEM or aftermarket head units. Whether or not they will be louder or more clear than your OEM automotive speakers depends a lot on what quality of speakers your vehicle came with. They would sound louder and better than the OEM speakers in my wife's Honda for sure and they are LOTS better than the OEMs in our RV, but I'm not sure they would beat the JBL speakers that came in my truck, but they would give 'em a good run. [ Timebak  May 19, 2017 ]
First of all, you do not need to have a Marine stereo to use these speakers. They do however may require a slightly larger opening than your current speakers, but not much. And your vehicle door structure most likely allows this increase in speaker size because I merely needed to make the opening 1inch in diameter larger to accommodate them. Meaning that I had to cut the opening a half inch bigger around the outside. This being said, I found that the increased clarity especially at high volume was amazingly impressive. I did of course add a powered subwoofer to get a wonderful balance of bass and clarity that is sometimes difficult to achieve. Because I used my new set up in a boat, I chose to add a marine subwoofer with a built-in amp but most auto setups have a separate amp and subwoofer. I would recommend strict adherence to your type of music and listening volume. Personally, I like many types of music and want to hear clarity in the highs, strong mids and just enough thump to add quality to the sound. Remember, destroying music is not cool or satisfying. Research, Research, Research!!!!!! You don't need to spend a lot of money. Start with the speakers you are cosidering, then add mid range powered by a small to medium sized amplifier, then add some, but not too much sub powered by an adjustable output amp. Because, trust me, you will want to turn the bass down. "Listen to your music, feel the meaning, and then add a balanced amount of bass" [ Brett  May 15, 2017 ]
Yes you can put these speakers in any car or truck. They do sound better then my original speakers that were in my boat, and any receiver will work with these speakers. Good Luck to you [ CARL  May 15, 2017 ]
I have my speakers mounted on the outside of my trailer. I would think it depends on how wide your center console is. The specs for those speakers should be here on this page. [ SCOTT  Jan 18, 2015 ]
More than likely they will. I used them to replace speakers on my Hewes Maverick and they fit fine. Other brands 6 1/2" would not fit. It really depends on original brand size. Trial and error with ability to return is your best shot. [ William  Jan 18, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Pioneer TSMR164 will fit nicely in place of the Kenwood speakers. Everything will be an easy replacement. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jul 01, 2014 ]  Staff
Thanks guys [ Jesse  Mar 19, 2014 ]
I ran into a similar problem, the hole also was too shallow, l used aluminum plate and cut out a ring over sized ,fastened the speaker to the ring and the ring to the surrounding hole and painted the speaker grill to match. It worked for my application. [ JAY  Mar 18, 2014 ]
Hey Jesse, The best thing I can tell you is dremel the holes out a little larger with a cutting bit. It really doesn't take that long. Good luck. [ DAVID R  Mar 18, 2014 ]
