Our take on the Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS

Pioneer designed the AVH-X3500BHS DVD receiver to entertain you and improve your driving experience. Check out this impressive set of features:

Packed with features

Pioneer designed the AVH-X3500BHS DVD receiver to entertain you and improve your driving experience. Check out this impressive set of features:

  •  Built-in Bluetooth®: Enjoy hands-free calling with your compatible phone, plus the ability to wirelessly stream and control music from your phone or other Bluetooth devices.
  •  Built-in HD Radio™ tuner: You'll notice the impressive sonic advantages right away — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. You can tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, for more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets you save song info, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.
  • Advanced App Mode: With the addition of Pioneer's CD-IU201S cable, you can launch and control compatible iPhone apps from the face of your receiver, putting a variety of music, navigation, social media, and other apps at your command (also requires CD-IV202AV cable kit and other adapters with iPhone 5). You can learn more and see the latest compatible apps here.
  • Optional satellite radio: Add a SiriusXM tuner and subscription for nationwide access to programming you can't get anywhere else — coast-to-coast reception is a huge plus if you travel constantly. And you'll never have to worry about data charges or coverage.
  •  Advanced touchscreen controls: Touch Slide technology offers greater control of receiver functions. Want a new EQ curve? Just draw it on the screen with your finger and you've got it. And you can browse video files through thumbnail images — just touch them to check out a sneak preview.

Roll with your music

The AVH-X3500BHS is built to play your music, no matter what medium you prefer.  You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the rear USB input and use the receiver's controls to access your playlists, while tools like Alphabet Search and Link Search help you find the song you want, fast. You can also play music files from many Android™ phones when your Android is plugged into the front-panel USB port — see the "Details" tab for more info on device compatibility.

If you're a fan of streaming Internet radio, connect your iPhone to the receiver with an optional cable and take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen, complete with thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls. And don't forget, you can also enjoy all your CDs, DVDs, discs full of MP3 or WMA music, or USB storage devices loaded with files.

Customizable display and excellent video performance

You can also change the receiver's appearance to match your dash by choosing from five display colors and 112 key panel illumination options. And when you're ready to get the party started, the MIXTRAX feature creates a DJ-like experience with content from your iPod®, iPhone®, or Android™, adding special effects between songs and variable-color lighting that pulses with the beat of your music.

The receiver's 6.1" LCD screen plays DVDs and other video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. You can keep your passengers entertained by sending video from the receiver to a rear-seat screen — a huge bonus during long road trips.  You'll be able to view video content from your iPod or IPhone (video playback requires CD-IV202AV cable kit and other adapters with iPhone 5, plus a firmware update — coming soon — from Pioneer) with the addition of an optional cable. And you can play it safe when you throw it into reverse by plugging in a rear-view camera.

A firmware update is available from Pioneer that will provide enhanced iPhone 5 compatibility to enable AppRadio Mode. However, due to an unforeseen communication error with the Pandora Internet radio app, audio playback and display of metadata from Pandora are disrupted. If you use Pandora and don't intend to use AppRadio Mode (also known as Advanced App Mode) at this time, please do not install this update. Pioneer is working on an update to allow for both Pandora and AppRadio Mode, to be released at a future date.

AppRadioLIVE makes it easy

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

Tune the sound to your taste

This Pioneer sports an 8-band equalizer for making your music sound perfect in your car, and you'll find an auto-equalization feature to tune your system (microphone required). Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever perks up the flat sound of compressed music by restoring high-frequency information.  If you're looking to build a killer system, three pairs of preamp outputs make it easier to connect external amplifiers

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Perfect fit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS was a very easy install with the concise directions provided by Crutchfield. The sound quality using my factory speakers is outstanding and can be very easily tailored to genre. After a short learning period the Bluetooth syncs perfectly with my phone making calls easy to hear and the large double din display makes the phone book easy to read without taking off my glasses, important stuff for an old guy. Pandora works seamlessly as does the Sirius XM V200 interface. The resolution when playing a DVD is very good.

Pros: Size of display, ease of use.

Cons: There is no down side that I have found but I need to figure out how to stop the display from dimming when my headlights are on during the day.

    excellent - zero complaints

I've been completely happy with this unit. Only issue I have found is the USB only works with FAT32/16 file systems which means no more than 4gb of music.

    Pros: Price Features Adaptability Expansion

Cons: USB only supports FAT32/16 file formats.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this product, I installed it in a 2012 Jeep Wrangler with the infinity sound system and it was amazing the difference in sound in my Jeep! I do have issues with the local radio stations, I am not sure if it is the radio or something hooked up wrong, but I rarely listen to local stations so not that big of a deal to me. Also my Jeep did not have bluetooth hands free calling before. Now I do have it, but there is alot of static in my speakers. Again, not sure if it is the stereo or the way I hooked it up.

Pros: Greatly improved sound in my Jeep

Cons: issues with local radio stations. But it may be my fault, I haven't troubleshot it yet.

    Pioneer still has it!

JasonH from Nashville TN on 3/28/2014

This was a project and a half. I installed this in a 2007 Durango which involved cutting the factory radio bezel and fiberglass work. I could have bought a diff. bezel and used a trim ring around the radio but then again I wanted it to look factory. Getting back to the radio, I have always loved Pioneer head units. I have owned diff. brands but nothing has came close to the sound quality of a Pioneer. In my install I opted for the factory amp bypass wiring kit. This was the right choice because it woke my factory Alpine speakers up, night and day difference. I can not say enough about this head unit. I can promise you that you will not be disappointed with a Pioneer product nor the service at Crutchfield. I had a slight problem with a item I had order and Crutchfield helped me out greatly and took care of the problems with no questions. Awesome first time experience with Crutchfield.

Pros: Sound quality is amazing!, and Bluetooth is flawless...

Cons: screen may not be as bright and clean as others and still have not been able to hook my galaxy 3 up via mirrorlink.

    very nice

I am still learning all the neat things this stereo can do. I really like the DJ function, especially how the lights look like a disco ball at a night club. Was hard to find a stereo all the additions I wanted (esp bluetooth) and the dvd player was a bonus. Very good deal. Would definitely recommend.

Cons: May be something I am doing wrong but when I hit the "data bass" button, it won't let me skip to next folder from steering wheel. So I just stopped refreshing it.

This stereo is really nice but I only have had it for 1 week to give it a really good reveiw.

Pros: It looks great, it has good sound even with the factory speaker. Nice color themes.

Cons: Doesn't support satellite radio, you have to buy V200 connect vehicle tuner.

I love the Pandora feature that lets me control Pandora through my receiver and the equalizer lets me get the exact sound I have been looking for.

Pros: The graphics are great with vivid colors and selection. I love the appearance of the album cover during the song on the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased and installed from Crutchfield for my Tundra as replacement for factory that had Bluetooth and Iphone/IPod compatibility and improved quality over my factory Equipment. Unit is easy to use and sound is very good even with Factory Speakers, which I will replace in a couple months. Crutchfield supplied all needed supplies for quick installation.

Pros: Very good sound quality, DVD Display is good, Charger cable & remote. Can connect Iphone & Ipod through Bluetooth or Cable and has input for backup camera. Mood colors can be adjusted to fit color of interior lighting.

Cons: USB Jack is on back of unit so you will need to run supplied cable from back of unit to glove box or some other location for charging or connecting physically. Need to purchase separate cables for Iphone & Ipod Videos and Pandora options(No big deal for me).

Great Head Unit For the Price

ScottG from Birmingham, Alabama on 3/12/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I enjoyed installing this unit in my 2010 Honda Accord. It was a total upgrade from the factory radio. Be aware that your dash display will be disabled because everything will be going through this unit. This system was combined with Infinity speakers and the sound was awesome. The Highs, Mids. and Lows were exactly comparable to my Bose system I had in another vehicle. Would not change a thing. See Pros and Cons for specifics on this review.

Pros: Great Sound, Easy to pair Bluetooth from iphone, HD Channels are crisp and clear. Easy to understand instruction with the exception of the steering wheel control input jack.

Cons: The head unit doesn't play nice with 2 phones attached. It gets confused and you have to turn system off to get it to pair up again. HD Radio display is confusing as it does not show the split HD channels.(103.7-1, 103.7-2, etc) If you have an Iphone 5, prepare to have to shell out about 100.00 for the interface cable so you can use the apps part of this head unit. It doesn't tell you this online, but in the box, its makes it clear that you can not upgrade the firmware for app radio without this cable

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first install and it came out rather nicely. The unit itself is amazing to look at. The controls and menus look very intimidating at first, this is my first touchscreen unit, but after a few minutes of playing around you get very familiar with the menus, big plus. Made my speakers come to life, but I eventually replaced my fronts with polk audio db651, now they sound even better. Overall, highly satisfied with the shipping speed, package, product and installations guides. Bluetooth audio works great and HD radio is a very neat feature. Thanks crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound, ease of installation, good display, HD Radio and bluetooth works well.

Cons: With ipod connected the menu is a tad bit slow; wish it was a little bit faster but not a big problem.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Attention: People who want to know "What does Android compatible mean with this thing." *Once you do this, you will love this head unit.* Well basically it means not compatible at all except through Pandora... However you can get it to effectively communicate with your Android phone with the right apps and tricks... Any app will successfully stream Bluetooth audio to this thing as a simple audio feed however very few will be able to be controlled with the head unit... -Pandora This requires you to go into Pandora settings and apply vehicle communication mode or whatever it is on your phone. This will cause your phone to become nothing more of a streaming device for Pandora to the head unit full control of Pandora including like/dislike, skip track, play, pause, etc... Now that works how it should. -MP3 music file streaming You need to download Poweramp for android, this app will stream everything song names, artist, album info track time, full controls of everything to the head unit... Seems simple right? Well if you don't use this app in particular you will have no control over anything except the volume have no info about anything not even track time... Cost a couple bucks but well worth it. -USB through Android Phone Useless only works if phone is in mass storage mode and it pretends its a thumb drive.

Pros: Trusted name brand at an affordable cost. Visually appealing. Fast and responsive. High level of audio control/filtering. User friendly display.

Cons: Android compatibility is minimum. NONE of the pioneer apps effectively communicate with this thing through android except Pandora and that is not even a pioneer written app its just built into Pandora as "accessory control".

    excellent all around!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just recently upgraded my factory (Non-Bose, Non-Nav) system in my 2003 MBZ C230 Kompressor to this Pioneer head unit. Very easy to install, fits perfectly and almost looks like it was placed there from the factory. Very cool features including the display and buttons being able to customize them and match them to the dash and center console factory lighting. Favorite feature is the iPod/iPhone interface. Love being able to plug in and listen to the music on my phone. The DVD feature is another good one. Plugged up two rear headrest monitors and its awesome. I thought there might be a distraction while driving, but the screen is barely noticeable if you're really driving and don't care what's on the screen. My only complaint is the remote is cheap and practically useless, but who cares. I got the steering wheel controller and it functions just like the factory deck, though somewhat limited.

Pros: Packed with features, great display and easy to install. Awesome sound quality even running factory speakers and factory sub, App Radio Feature (Haven't tried yet - NO CABLE).

Cons: cheap and useless remote, INCLUDE THE APP CABLE WITH THE UNIT! We already pay enough for these things, why is the cable another $80-$125.00 more?

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit has multiple features rolled into 1 display.

Pros: I like the fact that you can switch between functions with ease. The touch screen is sensitive enough where it reads your input the first time. there isn't much delay between screens. The blue tooth feature is great. it picks up my phone automatically after the first time i paired the two together. The equalizer adjustments are great. I havent tried a dvd yet. i am waiting on my 12 inch screen to come in.

Cons: this is one big con i can find. if you have an iphone and buy the extra cable, it is thick. kind of hard to keep in your lap while driving. it supposed to allow you to put the iphone up and use the head unit. LDog from Orange County, CA on 3/4/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 1st In-Dash Radio I have ever owned and as of today it the best overall radio I've ever owned. I love everything about it. If I had to do it all over again I would purchase this radio. I did a lot of research and found that for the price and options this was the best. I believe it is in the middle class for the models and found it had everything I needed. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking to purchase a new radio. I would also recommend to have it professionally installed.

Pros: Ease of use Look Options Price

    Cons: none

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

IPhone 5 users please read this! Before I purchased this unit I read, re-read, and read more reviews on this head unit worrying about if this would work well with my iPhone 5. I heard everything from you need to buy the special pioneer cable, you need to convert the lighting cable to analog and then back again, you need to update the firmware, etc, etc. Here is what I've tested for far with my iPhone 5: -Bluetooth calling -- No issues with iPhone 5 and included mic. Siri works when 'voice dial' feature is selected on HU -Bluetooth music -- No issues with iPhone 5. Song name, Artist, Album information is displayed but no cover art -Charging via USB port on back of radio using lighting cable -- No issues -iPod mode (with lighting cable) -- music with album cover is displayed, all Playlists, artists, etc are available for selection via HU -Navigation apps via lighting cable (Waze, Apple, Google maps) -- Maps not displayed on HU. When voice directions come on, the HU lowers music volume. -'App mode' via lighting cable -- really doesn't work well. I installed the app mode on my phone enabled the feature on the HU then promptly deleted the app. Not worth the time and effort to get it working - iPod mode with the lighting cable met all my needs.

Pros: Easy to install with harness Good sound out of factory speakers Excellent bluetooth calling (no complaints from callers, but they were aware I was driving on a highway. I installed this on a CRV which is a rather 'loud' car)

Cons: App mode - it is more like an alpha/beta feature. Not worth the extra money in cables. If you really want GPS on your HU I would buy another HU.

    Liz860 from Connecticut on 3/3/2014

I received this HU as a birthday present to replace a single-din Pioneer I currently had in my 2005 Chevy Cobalt. It was a tight fit and took a lot of finagling to get it into my dash, but it's in and is looking and sounding great. I love the fact that it has Bluetooth and is compatible with my Android powered smartphone (Moto X running 4.4 Kitkat). I can control both Pandora and Slacker Radio from the headunit and don't have to worry about touching my phone while I'm driving. If you're also into tweaking sound settings, this is the headunit for you.

Pros: Looks Great, Sounds Great, Ease of Use, Android Compatible, Bluetooth

Cons: Modified fit required more modifying than expected

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything on this unit has worked as expected. I particularly like the blue tooth connection (to Samsung Galaxy S3). I keep a 32Gb thumb drive full of music plugged in for times when I do not have a book on disc in the DVD player or on my phone (through Bluetooth audio). Radio seems to work well but I hardly use it. Have not really figured out the whole HD radio thing.

Pros: Bluetooth for phone calls and listening to audio books.

Cons: Unit can be REALLY hard to read at times. I have a convertible which does not help, but even at night some of the fonts Pioneer uses are RIDICULOUS. Most annoying is when I have an audio disc and there is no information to display except track out of total tracks and it will show up in a mouse type that would make Publishers Clearing House blush. Why on earth do they not look at how much info they have to display and adjust font size accordingly? In sunlight, no way to make screen bright enough.

She enjoys her Pandora on the way to work or talk to her Granny on the hands free while heading home. I drove it a few time and didn't not want to get out, so I just ordered me a new Pioneer for my truck today.

Can't control my android phone through the usb. When I have it hooked up via the blue tooth it takes 2 or 3 times to hit the forward button for it to skid to the next song. The hd radio will go from hd to analog and back to make the songs sound as if you cd is skipping.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried installing it myself but the wiring got over my head quickly. I ended up taking it to a stereo store to install which added quite a bit of money to the overall bargain I felt I had received. However, the moment I played this stereo for the first time, the difference between it and the stock Blaupunkt blew me away. The stock speakers actually sound decent now. I'll upgrade in the future to a sub, amp, and new speakers but for now I'm very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Sound quality, DVD player, visuals

Cons: When switching between presets, the numbers are very small and close to each other so it's hard to get the right one without looking down at the screen.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 3500BHS is a very nicely finished product. The screen size is just enough for me to use. The installation was simple (a few research and the instruction was quite clear) and crutchfield provided great support. I don't have a better speaker system in my car but I think the sound from the OEM speakers is very good after the installation of 3500. The HD Radio sounds very clear and almost like a CD quality. The UI is kind of complicated. You can find all the buttons and understand the function no problem. But sometimes you need to spend some time to find them first. The switching between functions is a little slow but good enough. The buttons on the left side is not separated so you have to look at the panel to make sure you are tap the right button. The hands free bluetooth is very useful and the auto connection works really well. I bought the cables for iPhone 5 compatibility since I want to see the videos and album covers from my phone. However, the App Mode wasn't so impressive for me. There are not many good apps useful except for Motion X and Waze. But when you are using the GPS mode you can NOT type in the address or use some other functions through the touch screen. You have to use your phone. It is also kind of annoying when you are switching between iPod mode and App mode. The system will automatically quit the app and next time you switch back you have to redo the "setup" process again. The apps work in the background in App mode, but so hard to switch between too.

New Receiver for my truck - really like it

    2007 Toyota Tacoma
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this in my truck now for about a month or two. Wanted to try out as much as I could before rating it. I had a stock radio in my truck that sounded like mud. I had a Kenwood in my Camry and really liked it. So, when it came down to choosing one for my truck (Tacoma), it was a Kenwood or this Pioneer. The Pioneer had HD radio which the Kenwood did not and was on sale. So, I chose it and am enjoying listening to music again. I have not been able to find any HD stations that I listen to, so this feature became irrelevant. However, the main points I was looking for came through in flying colors. I have a smartphone that I use for internet in my home. I wanted to be able to use my phone as an interface to the internet for navigation programs and for Pandora. The Pioneer made this really easy. I can connect to Pandora either through Bluetooth or a wired connection. Connections are automatic (most of the time) and trouble free. If I am connected through a wire, then I can "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" a song, or change radio stations right on the screen of the Pioneer. Navigation apps are available for the Pioneer, and I got a free one through the Radio Apps that the Pioneer has available as a selection already. Changing sources - Bluetooth, HD Radio, iPad, Pandora, is with the push of a button on the touch screen. The display is good, although there are some issues with direct sunlight on the screen. I think I would expect this with just about any screen.

Pros: Easy to use. Intuitive - mostly. Good sound. I like the equalizer, and the fact that I can access it with the push of a single button. Bluetooth phone is intuitive and all or most all of the options that are on my phone transfer over to the touch screen. I connected my simple MP3 player to the USB socket on the cable I got for my iPhone 4s and all my music comes up on the search screen. Another pro - Crutchfield support. Always professional and helpful.

Cons: Mixtrax - Can't really say this is a con because I havn't used it. This requires a little setup on my part and I will probably have to read the manual to set it up properly. This also requires music on my phone which I don't have. I do have an MP3 player with a couple of gigs of music on it so I will play with this feature on it. Since I listen to Pandora all the time, I don't really have the need for the Mixtrax.

Have always liked Pioneer units and very pleased with this so far. Have used Cruthfield previously and i am more than pleased with the staff and assistance with the installs.

Pros: Easy to use. Like the features of the illumination. Improvement over factory system.

Cons: Have to have all new door speakers (NOW) and in the future will install amp and subs. I know Crutchfield will get more of my money because i will not by from anyone else. Instructions for installation kit very confusing ( i cut off too many tabs) does not tell you which tabs to remove or the ones that you will need to leave in place. Take your time with this part.

As always Pioneer products are awesome. I was a little weary on buying a newer product because I've always liked the older models; however, in my consideration, if you're going to purchase a MP3 head unit for more expensive than a DVD/MP3/NAVI unit, I had to reconsider. The X3500BHS works very well, great graphics, illuminations, and sound quality for the price. The EQ is amazing on how much you could tune. The options available are so broad. For example, USB, AUX, Rear cam, MP3, DVD, Etc. The only thing I found difficult is the trying to play movie off the USB port. You can play movies; however, the manually says that it can play MPEG1,2, and 4, but it didn't work for me. The only format/type of movie I can play was DivX. I had to convert everything to Divx and it works. Make sure your audio format is correct also. Lastly, I wish they kept some of the old display, like the Dolphins swimming around while music is playing or come out with a different cool moving graphic display.

Pros: Sound quality great, good display, Great illumination, Price is incredible especially with Crutchfield because they include the harness, sleeve, etc.

Cons: USB movie playing was difficult to figure out, and I couldn't play MPEG1,2, and/or 4 like the manual said. I could only play DivX. The relay bypass is a little more difficult to figure out also. I figured it out but I think I am not allowed to explain it here.

I decided to wait until I had used this for a couple of months before I did my review. I'm glad I upgraded my stereo in my 2011 Tacoma. Overall, extremely pleased. The Bluetooth works great and I've not had one complaint about the other person hearing me. I didn't upgrade my speakers but wow, the sound quality is fantastic. The screen/display is top notch. I just wish I was able to upload a picture of mine for the background through my iPhone. Maybe I can, just haven't figured out how. The DVD player works great. My daughter loves it! I have two complaints with the stereo though. First, the HD radio is very frustrating. It's constantly jumping from HD to analog. Maybe it's where I live but I get very few HD stations. So it a moot point. Secondly, I have noticed that the AM clarity is not as good as my factory stereo. Again, not a huge deal just kinda disappointing with the price range. Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase and Crutchfield was great!!!

Pros: Display is great! Bluetooth sound is awesome. Love being able to stream Pandora!

Cons: AM is not as clear as factory. HD radio is very frustrating.

Pros: Screen works great. Easy to use GUI. Nice remote control

Cons: I'm a sucker to seeing album art when songs are playing. This radio doesn't show album art when using bluetooth. It can only display it when in HD radio mode or through USB. Album art is displayed through bluetooth on another radio I've used so I know it is not my phone. Sound is Good, Tuner...Not So Much.

    MarkAfterDark from Uxbridge on 1/12/2014

Installation was easy and Crutchfield provides a good install guide. Bluetooth pairing from the head was confusing and I ended up pairing from my HTC One, but my contact list did transfer. Sometimes the dial pad appears and sometimes it does not. Still trying to figure that out. The radio tuner is a huge letdown. The Hyundai factory tuner picks up dozens of stations and holds a strong signal, but the sound quality causes "ear fatigue" after several minutes at even moderate volume levels. The HD tuner is great when it is there, but it constantly cuts in and out. To be fair, the weather was rough and I just put the unit in.

Pros: Auto EQ is fantastic! Touch Screen is responsive Even my factory speakers sound decent now. HD tuner sounds amazing when its active DVD player is good and image quality is very good.

Cons: FM tuner is weak and HD tuner cuts in and out of analog mode. Documentation is inadequate. The Parking brake signal line - you need to set, release and reset the parking brake to use the DVD. There has to be a better way.

Received the unit exactly as promised. Spent 45 minutes wiring harnesses together utilizing VERY CLEAR instructions. Proceeded to disassemble my dash in my F150 (again following EXCELLENT instructions from Crutchfield!), removed old unit. Installing new head unit was very good, but the instructions could use a small clarification that removal of some of the tabs/ears for installation was required, but it was obvious, so not a big deal... Installation went smooth, powered up and worked 100% as expected. VERY HAPPY.

Pros: Excellent unit, ESPECIALLY for the price! Installation instructions from Crutchfield were VERY helpful!

For the price I paid for this unit I got a feature fulled entertainment system. This head unit comes with so many awesome features. The touch screen is responsive. Bt sound quality is great. It's very simple to operate and setup. The sound quality is amazing and it has the built in eq to make it even better. I can't find any flaws with this.

Pros: Ease of use. Feature packed. Powerful sound.

My son and I put a system together for his car building on components i have used in my car. This Head Unit is far above the Sony 7" i have in my car in terms of sound quality, responsiveness of the touch screen, and thoughtful placement of often used features such as EQ. I highly recommend.

Pros: Touch Screen, Sound Quality, software

Cons: Some of the features are kind of hidden if you don't read the manual, such as the HP and LP settings if you need them. If you don't have your phone with you and its been paired with the Bluetooth, the screen freezes until you press an OK button.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, I will say I never installed it. I powered it up on the bench to check function and features. It seems to have cool features and gimmicks making it attractive to the masses, but I am more into efficiency and function over a cool touchscreen. DVD touchscreen receivers DO NOT have remote control abilities for audio adjustments!! I have been using my remote for audio adjustments for almost 20 years, and this is a step back! You have to use the touchscreen for almost every function. In my truck, this means an unsafe process of leaning forward and viewing the touchscreen for every control except volume! The remote is practically useless except for sitting in the back seat to watch a DVD! I didn't even care much if it had a DVD player; just wanted a full-featured double DIN deck to replace my aging and malfunctioning Pioneer unit, but no such thing exists, I am told by Crutchfield. I am now forced to make my system more complex by somehow combining 2 single DIN units to get the features I want along with the ability to control my unit!

Pros: Cool gimmick features and appearance

Cons: No control knob, complicated to use, remote is useless!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this unit over the weekend into a 2003 Audi A4 with Bose. Installation was simple after a quick call to support. I noticed the pin-outs on the connectors between the vehicle and the adapter sent in the kit didn't match up. this is ok as those wires aren't used. Primary reason for upgrade was for Bluetooth connectivity to my smartphone. As I read and compared models I was intrigued with the AppRadio connectivity. Problem is this model doesn't support it for Andriod. Need to go all the way up to 8500 model. Things it does do well: HD Radio is much better than the OEM unit. I commute 75 miles and generally just get out of range from one end to the other. With the HD tuner I never lost signal or started to get any static on the AM stations and they truly sounded FM quality. Pandora connection with Bluetooth is good. Takes a bit to fire up Pandora on the phone but from there all commands are done from the touch screen. Bluetooth phone connectivity is good and sound quality from the remote microphone is good, not great. Better than most and much better than a ticket for driving in a hands free zone. First thing upon connecting it asked to download the contact list which makes placing calls much easier. Looking forward to playing with additional features and will update this review.

Pros: Bluetooth functionality, HD radio range, cool factor.

Cons: Lack of Android support for AppRadio. Does pioneer not realize that iPhone only has a 12-15% market share while Android has 3x that?

I bought this as I wanted to upgrade to a DoubleDin unit for my 1998 F150. I had to do a lot of cutting on the dash but it fit great. Pair my phone was painless. I actually paired my wife and son's phone to it as well. Streaming music as well as hands-free are awesome. The HD radio is ok, it switches back and forth between analog and digital when the signal is weak FYI. Haven't messed with the satellite or pandora yet. Overall this is a great radio. extremely pleased.

Pros: Easy user interface. Great sound. Made my sub actually sound much better and cleaner. Door speakers are also brighter and crisp.

Cons: Plugging in a thumbdrive for videos still doesn't work. I have tried EVERY format and screen resolution and they all fail. Playing music from a USB thumbdrive works great, videos = not so much.

I replaced my factory unit in my 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser with this head unit, keeping the existing amp and speakers. Installation was fairly easy, the included wiring harness certainly helped, and the documentation was 85% complete, and was able to figure out the remaining details. Love the Bluetooth audio and the hands free calling - pairing was super easy with my Android (Motorola Razr Max). Also used the USB cable to keep a thumb drive in the glove box. Not using the Sirius or Apple features. Sound is excellent, though this is making me want to upgrade my factory speakers. Touch screen interface is easy to use. TIP: when installing the Bluetooth microphone, do NOT put it near your AC vents - that introduces noise that drowns out your voice; I installed mine directly behind the steering wheel column so it's inline with my voice when facing forward. I spend too much time on conference calls in the car, and this solution works with very good quality.

Pros: - Bluetooth Audio & Hands Free; - Touch Screen Interface - Audio Quality

Cons: - Installation Guide was 85% complete, I had to deduce a couple of connections that weren't documented, but worked fine.

This unit is very used friendly has some very cool features and was very easy to install. The main reason I purchased this unit was for the phone feature as I travel a lot but my favorite feature is the auto mixer when using the USB port. I connected my MP3 player and it's like I've got a DJ inside my truck with me. I wasn't impressed with the app radio features as they are limited when used with an iPhone it seems to be a little better with an android phone so I don't use that feature. But overall this unit is definitely worth the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

While the sound of my Jeep Sahara Unlimited's factory Infiniti system was decent, I was wanting to upgrade my overall experience and chose the Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS after doing tons of research on different brands and models as it had the perfect mix of features, performance and price that I was looking for. Of course the best part of a new stereo is firing it up and giving it a go and needless to say I was impressed. The new head unit instantly gave my factory speakers a totally new sound and using the included onboard EQ I was able to dial it in even further. The user interface is pretty straight forward and easy to use, though one of the biggest selling points on this model for me was the inclusion of physical buttons for some of the basic functions as touch screens are cool, but can be difficult to use while driving, especially while navigating less than smooth roads. The bluetooth integration was easy enough with my iPhone, though I'm still not entirely sure how to have it connect automatically. The call quality is amazing and people have told me that they weren't even aware I was using a hands free rig, so the included mic is more than adequate in my opinion. I just mounted it to my visor and it catches my voice with little to no background noise which is pretty amazing seeing how I'm driving a Jeep with 35" mud tires. I could ramble on and on, but all told I'm a happy camper and am only disappointed by the fact that it took me so long to upgrade!

Pros: Clean styling - looks modern, but not ridiculous like many head units do today. Same goes for the interface - looks nice and tight and not like some off-brand Android tablet.

Cons: The only con I can think of is that you've got to buy a bunch of other gear to fully integrate your smartphone, though in all reality I've only just used my iPhone to play music over the USB connection and haven't even utilize the full on AppRadio interface yet.

I purchased this radio for installation into a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee along with a backup camera. With the help of Crutchfield, this 'difficult' installation was doable. Pioneer backup camera works great with the unit and the picture is easy to see (although shadows are tough). I was able to keep steering wheel controls using interface from Crutchfield. Biggest complaint is that Artist Info font is too small to see it clearly with MP3's. Plus I lose the radio memory about once a month.

Pros: *Easy to navigate through the menus and functions - which is quite an accomplishment. *EQ is easy to use. *Plays back MP3 DVD's along with song information. *Works extremely well with iPad / iPod plugged in through the USB. Displays song information and artwork. Also plays Podcasts while controlling the iPad / iPod through the radio. *Enough power from the USB to charge a power hungry iPad 2. *Plenty of power.

Cons: *Screen is not always easy to see in daylight. I cannot seem to make it brighter. *It does a great job of displaying song information. While the title is easy to see, the artist name is a much smaller font and difficult to see. *It randomly loses memory on start of the car engine. It would be easy to add a simple circuit to make it less vulnerable to low voltage during start up. *The display automatically dims with headlights - a problem during a rain storm during the day.

Great unit for the price. HD Radio, Bluetooth, iPOD and AppRadio all work very well. Having navigation, hands free phone and Pandora through my iPhone is a definite plus BUT the sound improvement over the G35's OEM CD/Radio is absolutely amazing. I kept the stock Bose amp even though many people said it is terrible. It may be but I am extremely happy with the improved sound. All controls and settings are very intuitive and easy to access. Head unit response is very rapid as I'm able to move through applications, settings and large music or video file directories with ease. Overall installation in the G35 was intimidating at first as it seemed like I had to take the entire dashboard apart and make dozens of connections. The G35 Driver forum had all the wiring diagrams, instructions, You Tube videos and member experience that made the job simple. Crutchfield info and service was good but the online information for the G35/37 can't be beat. I assembled the interconnecting harness with a Scoshe adapter, brake bypass chip and Metra SWC on the bench so that all wiring could be soldered and made plug-n-play. This worked perfectly and made the in-car hookup a lot less to juggle even though I found that re-assembling the center console and dash was a real PITA. Glad I did the swap to a Pioneer HU that gave me terrific sound, quality and value that can't be beat.

Pros: Sound, Quality & Looks. Crutchfield package including everything that was needed.

Install was a breeze, I actually replaced the included USB cord with one that fits flush in the dash of my truck, it looks good and the system sounds good. I would definately recommend this reciever. For the price, this unit has plenty of options with it, some I have not tried yet, but in the future, I might try out the Satelite radio or possibly the back up camera, my main goal was to hook my phone to my stereo to play music. The microphone and phone calls also work very well on the unit. Modern technology in my 2004 Ford F250, I am very happy with it.

Pros: Easy to read information. Easy set up.

Cons: The FM reception was not as good as i though it should be. Factory radio had better reception. Blue does not operate the iPod feature on my phone. I have to use the phone to operate the iPod feature.

Very easy install in 08 Frontier. Looks great. Wire harness worked perfectly, I soldered the harness connections then heat shrunk the soldered joints. Metra adapter kit looks very nice, no gaps. I was told the phone mic sounds great attached to headliner directly above mirror. If I had known this was going to be so simple, and sound this good with RF Prime R169x2 front door speakers, I'd have made the switch long ago. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Simple install. Love the clean look and the sound with the RF speakers is so much better than stock. Love the equalizer. Bluetooth iPhone, iPod, Pandora all work perfectly.

Cons: Haven't figured how to add jpg photo as background yet, but that is only con.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, this is a huge step up over a 12 year old stock Toyota radio any day! Sound quality so far appears to be great, but that can also be attributed to good Rockford Fosgate amps and speakers / subs so only using line outs (not driving speakers with head unit). Good sound comes from both source an output. Price is up there, but there is a ton of features. You MUST read the manual to understand how to use the unit vasfeature set. Tons of features (which is always nice) but some of them are buried in sub menus. Screen is pretty and for the most part fairly responsive. There is time it feels underpowered. Sirius XM radio add on worked out of the add on box. Not an issue. HD radio does seem a little hit or miss sometime but now I have Sirius XM I doubt I will be on regular radio as much! USB port was one of the things most looking forward to and probably most disappointed. First if you have a LARGE digital media collection expect the unit to be SLOW. I mean patience trying SLOW. Our collection has grown to 15K+ songs across nearly 2K folders. Even after creating the "database" on the system it is very sluggish to find your music! We wont even go into the whacked out sorting order of the music (based on FILENAME) NOT by MP3 tags!!!! Really? All running off a 128G USB Fast Flash drive that screams. Need to do more research on how digital media library tweaks (to files, directories, album art) to improve Pioneers horrible UI design and performance.

Pros: Sounds good - most import correct?! Tons of features Pretty screen Sirius XM integration just works once added. Has USB port support (just poor implementation - see below) Lots of outputs Good Bluetooth support so far

Cons: Direct sunlight makes screen almost unusable. (This is for a car outside right Pioneer)? Dont drive with headlights on and expect to see the dimmed screen during the day. USB digital media library UI performance HORRIBLE. Digital media files album art work has to be embedded in actual MP3 files! Mixtrax EZ - Not impressed (must be too old now) and would prefer my digital media searching to be quicker!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this model after returning a Kenwood DDX470 and I am happy with the purchase. Install was straightforward and no issues connecting to my SiriusXM tuner or backup camera. The unit boots very quickly, I never find myself waiting for it, and is reasonably responsive to touch inputs. (Though you do have to exert a little force on the screen, as opposed to more sensitive capacitive screens) The interface makes sense for the most part, (A little confusing when configuring the backup camera to appear automatically when car is in reverse though) and the bluetooth call quality is good. 2 small downsides: First, I wish the display was more customizable - the Channel/Artist/Song font is way too small - not large enough to be able to see what song is playing be quickly glancing at the screen. I would like to make that text larger - even if I have to give up the (pointless) wave effect next to the text. Would love to see that in a firmware update, unlikely as that may be. Also it would be nice to be able to make the icons on the main screen larger so that they're easier to press while driving. Second, the unit displays a popup message when the last connected bluetooth device isn't nearby to connect. (Why oh why would you do this Pioneer? Some of us have more than one driver/phone that use the car) It takes a second to acknowledge the message and tell it to stop trying to connect. Not a huge deal, but completely unnecessary and annoying. Hoping for a firmware update.

Pros: Good features for the price, bootup time

Cons: Annoying popup for bluetooth phone not being nearby, text size of song metadata

My 2005 Mustang CD player stopped working. Living on a remote island I wanted a radio with range to pick up stations a distance away. I also wanted HD Radio, Bluetooth technology and a radio that would be the same size as the one I was replacing. Wes at Crutchfield directed me to the 3500. Installation sheets were clear as to removal. Installation wasn't too bad after a phone call or two to tech support. All and all I am very satisfied. Operating instructions are intense but once set up all is good. I put in a DVD movie and the sound is crisp and the viewing is OK for the size of the unit. Just a note, the DVD video will not work while the vehicle is in motion.

Pros: All the above. A backup camera is available for the screen but I will wait on that

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my initial review after using the unit for a couple of weeks. While I have not dug into all of the settings that the device has, I have used many of the features. In general I like it but I have found a few things I consider disappointments. When playing music from USB, the only way album art is displayed is if it is embedded in the file. Album Art .jpg files are not displayed. If you want album art displayed as I do, (one of the main reasons I bought the unit) you have to embed it in each file with a tagger program. This makes each file larger and takes up unnecessary space. This function also does not seem to react to MP3's that are tagged with track/album leveling data. I am disappointed with the radio sensitivity. The radio primarily tries to use HD all of the time except when the signal is weak. As the signal strength weakens it switches between digital and analog which provides an echo effect at times. I tried Mixtrax EZ; It's a waste of time and a waste of program/memory space. It cuts off songs in the middle and makes others sound choppy like a bad rip. When Mixtrax is on, it puts a starburst behind the cover art and a spotlight like graphic toward the left side of the screen. Both flash in time with the music This is distracting and pointless. It also overrides equalizer settings. In my opinion the inclusion of this worthless "feature" and the radio issue mentioned above means that Pioneer has fallen from its former status as a class act product.

Pros: > Displays album art (if you give the unit what it will display) > The audio section is strong and sounds good > The EQ is acceptable (did not use the auto EQ feature); > the bluetooth phone is OK (other main reason I bought the unit) > bluetooth streaming works OK. > Installation was a breeze coupled with the PIE adapter.

Cons: > Album Art (or similarly named) .jpg files are not displayed. > Mixtrax > radio is weak; produces an echo effect as it switches between digital and analog > Did I mention Mixtrax.....

A great head unit with a ton a features. There are a lot of choices for color schemes so matching your interior lighting is easy. Changes modes quickly too. If it weren't for two things I'd given it 5 stars. First is the fact you have to spend so much to get the cabling to allow the app mode to work with the iPhone 5. This was not stated clearly at the time of purchase. Second is in order to watch the DVD you have to connect the parking. Although I understand the safety reason for this function but when you have to set the brake multiple times to get a movie to show on the screen is a little cumbersome. All in all I still love the unit and think it is a great value for all its capabilities. Adding the SWC adaptor and Satellite radio were easily done thanks to the excellent tech support of Crutchfield.

Pros: Great Bluetooth sound quality for streaming and talking on the phone. Handles HD radio better than my Alpine unit which has a longer delay between channels.

Cons: Doesn't allow you to use the apps on screen with the iPhone 5 without spending so much extra money on cables. The parking brake attachment is a pain.

Pros: Very visually aesthetic and entertaining! It definitely has a 5 star coolness factor!

Cons: The Radio is great so these are all nit picky things... Some of the touchscreen icons are a little meticulous and small to touch accurately every time, and I wish the display font size was adjustable. And lastly, I wish the tactile feedback of the beeping every time a button or the screen touched could be turned off.

I enjoy the fact that you can change the display colors, but did Pioneer ever think of making an adjustment for the "FONT". This is a great stereo unit as it replaced the factory U connect stereo in our 2012 Dodge 2500. The install in my 2012 Dodge 2500 was not easy. I had to cut the metal frame in the dash to get the stereo unit to fit properly. It was possible and the outcome was worth it but not an easy task as just cutting a little plastic as was mentioned on this site. It has great Sirius features compared to my AVH-4400BT that I have in my 2008 Tacoma. It shows more info of the songs, artist and band name. Also you can pause the songs and replay as well. The screen is a little busy with the Sirius XM in the background, Pioneer could have left it out. And the brightness of the screen is non adjustable. I would like to have it adjustable for night driving. I disconnected the dimness wire as when I turned on my lights during the day the screen was to dim and was not able to see the screen.

Pros: Great Sirius stereo Easy to use Great bluetooth connections

Cons: No screen adjustments for brightness Back lit screen busy with excess info you do not need

    bdkennedy1 from Dallas on 7/10/2013

Bought this to replace the stock uConnect system in my Dodge RAM. If you have a Dodge RAM be prepared with a hacksaw for installation. The unit is too big to fit in the same hole so you will have to cut off the steel support brace inside the dash. I bought this primarily for the Bluetooth audio streaming (A2DP). My music would skip frequently even with my phone near the unit (deal breaker). There is no dedicated Call button so you have to find and press the correct screen icons 3 times to make a call. By that time I could have took out my phone and used Siri. The HD AM radio reception sounds great but reception is poor. Half the stations I listen to got no signal. This is true of 2 of my FM stations. Sound is excellent with a full wealth of adjustment options. Overall, it's an OK unit but the pro's didn't outweigh the cons.

Pros: Excellent sound Large screen Turns on quickly

Cons: Bluetooth audio streaming skips No dedicated volume knob Screen hard to see in daylight Small icons require several pushes MixTrax is a gimmick Needed $$ in accessories to keep steering wheel controls and computer compatibility

First of all, Crutchfield is great! The vehicle-specific instructions they supplied made the installation a snap. For the price, this is a very good stereo system. The sound quality is great, and the video screen is crystal clear. The on-screen text while playing a cd or streaming bluetooth audio is so small that it is barely legible. Also, there is very little user control over the appearance and set up of the screen display. When most cd's play, only the track number is shown and it is extremely small print. The bluetooth is very good. I only wish that it supported android phones for the apps as it does iphones.

I've used a few "generic" head units before and I recently decided to try out pioneer in my new Camry. Overall I am pleased with how it looks and performs, but there are some minor issues that somewhat annoying. I contacted Pioneer about the issues listed in the cons, and all they had to say was something along the lines of "Thank you for your feedback, your concerns have been sent to the marketing department for future products." So I don't suppose Pioneer plans on releasing a firmware update for these minor inconveniences. I would most definitely purchase this product again, but it would be nice to find Pioneer actually cares about taking care of their current customers.

Pros: -Nice display, resolution wise. Direct Sunlight washes it out though. -Great sound Quality. -Fast start up time. -Easy to navigate. -Bluetooth connects flawlessly. -Large range of tweaks for the display and sound.

Cons: -Using Pandora connect through Bluetooth, no sound will be present on start up of the unit, instead you'll have to exit the program and enter it again. -Selection beep cannot be turned off. This isn't a problem for me, i rather like it. It would be nice to have the option though. -The parking break restrictions seem random at best. I understand the need to restrict video while driving, but is it really necessarily for altering the display settings?

First thing I noticed was the great sound ! Also nice screen, good HD reception and lots of features with great customization. Wiring was a piece of cake with Posi-Products connectors (great little things with no crimping). Also got a rear view cam to go along and it works great, you can see stuff behind you while driving or activate when in reverse. The screen does wash out a bit in bright sunlight, but I'd say most DVD units are the same. Now a couple of minor design issues I noticed: 1. The time display doesn't have the day on it anymore (ie Mon, Tue, Wed). Some models have it, some don't. Can't see why Pioneer puts it in some and not others. 2. On the right side menu, it displays the bluetooth connection, but it's the only item on the right side that won't open up any menu if you touch it. Can't see why Pioneer didn't let you touch it to get to the settings. 3. I wish there was a USB slot on the front. If you want to connect your phone for app mode, there's no way to connect a thumb drive for stored music.

Pros: Great sound. Good HD reception. Many features. Highly customizable.

Cons: Screen washes out in bright sunlight. Wish it had a USB port on the front.

The bluetooth is awesome. Almost instantly connects to my iPhone and I can play my songs through it. The mic for the phone is great and I can be heard with no problem. Looks great in the dash and definitely an upgrade from the factory unit in looks and functionality. will probably put this same unit in my truck when I update that stereo.

Cons: takes a while for the head unit to recognize my portable hard drive, cant find the brightness adjust as the screen is a bit too bright at night time

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good radio, but my major complaint is with the "SiriusXM Ready" compatibility. I installed this with the SiriusXM V200 tuner. Everything works well, except I found that the remote control that comes with the stereo has very limited control over the SiriusXM tuner. Most notably, there is no way to change XM channels with the remote. In fact, the remote doesn't even have any number buttons. This came up in a big way on a recent road trip, where my wife sat in the back seat with my daughter for most of the trip. She was used to being able to change the channels remotely, which she could do with my old, dash mounted XM receiver. Overall, I'm disappointed to spend so much money to lose functionality.

    Pros: good sound quality

Cons: cheap remote, with limited XM functionality.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start of by saying this is one cool unit. Any time a friend gets in my car, they are impressed with my new stereo. I don't see myself watching a lot of DVDs on the unit but, if you're getting the unit for that function, I would suggest comparing it to some others (in terms of picture quality and res). If you have an iPhone, the " optional" cable is an absolute requirement. I have to say, the Pandora is beautifully displayed with the album art, all of your stations, thumbs up and down, etc. all available directly on the unit. The only downside I've noticed with Pandora is that you can't create stations, so make sure your stations are all made before connecting to the unit. ItI have it's also annoying that you constantly have to allow access to the unit on your phone. Bluetooth quality is "meh" but I've heard worse. Mine is fully loaded with the Sirius XM tuner and back up camera. A good thing about the SXM tuner is as soon as the unit begins running, it starts "listening" to all of your presets on the current band so, you can rewind content on all of your stations. I've noticed some features lacking such as song/artist alerts and the ability to see whats playing BEFORE actually selecting a channel. The EQ is great, preset backgrounds and other customization are a good touch. I've tried to upload my own background but didn't like the way it looked due to the screen's quality. Good unit for the price and definitely a cool unit to show off.

Pros: Bluetooth, back up camera capability, Sirius XM capability, HD radio, DVD player, USB connectivity, customizable, good price

Cons: Low screen quality, "cheap" feeling buttons.

    Leave you wanting more

ChrisM from Columbus, OH on 1/14/2013

All in all the unit is worth investing but there are a few things buyers should be aware of. The output power of the unit is respectable and the visual EQ is a nice feature but more customization options such as cabin size selection, i.e. truck, sedan, coupe, etc and speakers size selector would be nice to help tune the system. Visually the menus are clean and the picture is optimal, however, the resolution for DVDs is very disappointing. If a 3in smartphone can have high, or even enhanced resolution, then a 6.1 monitor should be no problem. Don't expect much on the DVD resolution side unless you pony up more money. The built in HD radio and Bluetooth is a nice feature but I'd like to see more sensitivity of the bluetooth mic. If your putting the mic in a subtle inconspicuous place it looks nice but people on the other end have a hard time hearing you. You can bring it closer to you but then it's in plain view and is an eyesore. The last thing, which all aftermarket units have an issue with, is units being compatible with Android phones. There are more Android users than iPhone users and as cool as the apps look, I don't have an iPhone and I'd like to see Pioneer kick it up a notch. I'm disappointed to see Pioneer put forth a lot of effort for iPhone users but Android users are out of luck unless we step up to the 8500BHS. At the end of the day you get a lot of bang for your buck but the 3500BHS leaves you wanting more with today's technology.

Pros: Bluetooth and HD radio built in. Touch screen operation and apps for iPhone users. A nice packaged unit for the money.

Cons: DVD resolution for it's screen size and price point is disappointing, lack of Android compatibility.

Everything I expected it to be. Like others, I put a lot of research into this purchase and relied heavily on user reviews. I put this in a 2007 Wrangler JK and installation was very easy. Made a noticeable difference in factory speakers. Overall I am extremely happy with this unit.

Pros: Great sound, good user interface, responsive screen, Bluetooth connects quickly and without issues.

Cons: Better integration with iPhone 5. Not Pioneers fault since Apple changed the connector and video output. Now I have to get additional cables in a couple months when released for AppMode and video.

iPhone 5 works for me. Fantastic deck!

dondabomb5 from Tampa, FL on 1/7/2013

The resolution is fantastic, sharp, and crisp. Features are very good for this 2013 model. I have an iPhone 5 and I am very happy to report it works fantastic with it. Had some trouble with Pandora but nothing a restart of my phone would not cure. Music plays great and album art shows as well. Pioneer says you need to buy a specific cable along with the lightning adapter to make music work with this head unit... As you can see from this review that is not the case. Some features may not work without this cable but as long as my music plays that's all that matters to me. I haven't tried any apps but this does have an app feature for certain apps and your phone. Using the deck is pretty self explanatory as well so that's a plus. The only difference between this one and the X550BHS is the price obviously and the screen size (with buttons on the bottom instead) otherwise everything else is the same. Also, I am pleased to report movies play from the USB drive as well. The only issues I have is when you connect your device via Bluetooth and turn it off, the deck checks for it every time the vehicle is started and displays a message that you must manually delete. No big deal but a deck as good as this one shouldn't have this minor issue. Also the deck is laggy at times and can have a slow response every now and again but mos def not a deal breaker.

Pros: Screen resolution, layout of buttons, works with the iPhone 5 lighting cable, USB plays movies, etc

Cons: Annoying Bluetooth message when a connected device cannot be found. Can be laggy at times.

Great Radio & Features for the Money!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It takes a little time to get used to the features, but the radio sounds great. The XM kit is also a nice addon. If you are using iPhone5, make sure you have a USB to 30PIN cable (iPhone 4 cable), and then use a 30pin to lightning adapter to connect up. The USB to lightning that comes with iPhone5 does not work. iPhone over Bluetooth works great too. The people at pioneer and people at Crutchfield told me that it would not give me the metadata (play next, previous, and song info) from Bluetooth, but after upgrading to 6.0.2 it works for me. It's also really cool because Bluetooth streaming works for Android too. The hands free for talking also works great. I have a pioneer 3300bt in my wife's Sequoia, and placed this one in my truck. This one has way more features. Merry Christmas to me.

Pros: Android and IPHONE, XM, and Handsfree

Cons: The Dash kit could have been a little better made. Every now and then, when I connect my iPhone via USB, it errors out. Powering cycling my iPhone fixes it.

Great DVD headunit for the price!

Andrew D from Cincinnati, OH on 1/3/2013

I had wanted a double din DVD receiver for my car for a couple years now, and finally took the plunge when Pioneer released the new AVH-X3500BHS. I had put in the older AVH-P3400BH in a family member's car earlier this year, and I can say I am much more impressed with this model in terms of the screen, interface and functionality.

Pros: Pandora app function (for Android) is possibly my favorite feature: you can start pandora and change station without ever taking your phone out of your pocket. Handsfree calling also works great and is much easier/safer.

Cons: HD radio was a disappointment: the signal needs to be so strong to not collapse in and out into analog that the difference isn't too significant. But if you do want this feature, this unit offers good value for having it built in.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not sure what would be the best way to tackle this review so I'll just go down a list of what I think are the important points for anyone reading this review. Hope you guys/gals find it useful. 1. SCREEN- So the look of the unit is nice & clean. The buttons are well laid out and the illumination of the buttons is perfect (neither too bright nor too dim for day/night) plus, you can match any interior color you may have. The screen of the unit is nice but I feel it could be better. I only say that because movies may look a bit pixelated but it's not horrible by any means. It is a good display and the touch screen is very responsive with very little to no lag. 2. BLUETOOTH - I mainly purchased this unit for this reason and it does not disappoint. However, it is not perfect. After installing the mic on the A-pillar I placed a call and asked for feedback. I was told that although this was a definite improvement, it was not perfect. Background noise could still be heard and at times may make it difficult to hear a word here or there. Overall, it is good enough to make calls, but expect a minor interference. 3. PANDORA - Works very well with my Droid phone and it doesn't need any additional app loaded unto the phone. Just set the radio to use it's bluetooth for Pandora and your phone will work with the radio. Then control the phone via the radio's touch screen display. Done! 4. HD RADIO - Never had it before and I really like it! It's a huge improvement over regular FM!

Pros: It looks great, easy to use with a not-so-tough learning curve, lots of great features and works well with my Android HTC Rezound!!

Cons: I would like a bit more customization for the screen, the screen resolution could be better, a 2nd USB connection would be a plus, and don't bother with the App Radio app for Androids (needs a lot of Pioneer support which doesn't seem to be a priority at this time)

    Good Unit

Zak from Cleveland, OH on 1/1/2013

This unit is great for almost anything you can ask of a radio. iPod functionality works great, bluetooth works seamlessly, and the unit is overall just a great looking and sleek display for your car. $400 is a rather hefty price tag for just a radio I think, but it met every expectation I had for it. I only had a little bit of trouble with the App Radio iPhone app but that wasn't the radios issue. Note: "Sirius/XM ready" means it still requires an adapter. I had missed this before I bought it and was slightly disappointed to see it still required an adapter. This was really my fault though since I hadn't read up on it thoroughly, so I didn't dock the unit any points for this.

Pros: - Great Bluetooth Streaming and Calling - Easy to Use - Looks Cool - Rear USB/AUX - Plenty of Features

Cons: - App Radio App for iPhone is glitchy. - Buttons can feel a little small sometimes.

Great but step back in iphone5 compatibility

Michael from Zionsville, In on 1/1/2013

This was my first choice over the older Pioneer unit p3400bhd, due to larger screen size and rear USB port location. I absolutely liked the unit operating system, with mixtrax as added bonus. Especially nice was album art displayed by some hd radio stations as well as when playing music from USB. What I could not get is a step back Pioneer made with iphone5 compatibility. P3400 (last year's model) works with regular iPhone5 cable, so imagine my disappointment when I connected my iphone5 and got iPod control but no sound(sound was coming from iPhone itself). I even purchased lightning to 30 pin adapter recommended by other reviewers and connected through old iPhone cable - no sound. Thanks to Crutchfield support I received replacement p3400bh and was credited difference in price. It is beyond me how an older unit is compatible with regular lighting cable while newer unit is not. I would have given it 5 stars had it worked with iPhone5.

Pros: Graphics, ease of use! Mixtrax, album art from hd stations

    Cons: Iphone5 compatibility

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice unit...had initially ordered a sony mexbt4100, and was extremely disappointed by the user interface and bluetooth operation (it goes back to what you're listening to after someone calls you...but if you make a call, it gets "stuck" on the phone call, making you manually scroll through the various inputs to get back to your music. Worked better on my 6 year old sony head unit). This unit is much better, much easier to use, and better sound. I have no intention of ever using a dvd in it, but having the touch screen is worth it just for ease of use when driving. Also, connecting a rear camera was easy (and even running the wires was easy) and provides a good, large picture of what's behind you.

Pros: User interface, touchscreen, bluetooth functions, usb connection

Cons: only android app that is compatible is pandora, while iphone has a host of apps available. Considering as of q2 2012 android had a 68% market share, and iOS a 17% market share, that seems silly. Hopefully a firmware update will rectify this.

After buying the first Appradio then the new iPhone 5 thinking Pandora would work and not being able to afterall, I am thrilled that I now have this awesome stereo that exceeds my expectations!!! This stereo is fast! Easy to use, and I love how all the colors match my interior when I set them! This stereo looks like it belongs from the factory now! Bluetooth streaming is flawless so far and when I connect my phone I leave it alone, hit Pandora and it plays, soo easy and HD radio is a night and day difference. Thoroughly enjoying this stereo more than I even expected. I also popped in a DVD while my wife and I were waiting for friends at a resturaunt and very impressed as well. I have always equipped all of my vehicles with pioneer and have always been satisfied. I will be shipping my Appradio back now as I have exchanged and am paying the difference for this new stereo. Anyone with a 4 or 4s can still use Appradio but I'd probobly recommend the newer version of that myself. Hope this helps people with there buying decisions. I know the other reviews I have seen on here so far are great in knowledge already.

Pros: Easy to use Super fast Color changing is awesome Plays music from iPhone 5

    Cons: None so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced a factory unit with aftermarket speakers. First impressions - great looks and awesome sound. The interface and features are very user-friendly. The screen is sharp and quite responsive. One of the features I wanted was HD radio and this unit does not disappoint. If you live in an area with HD availability, you should check this out. Even though I have never attempted anything like this before, I decided to try the self-install. I'm glad I did. It was much simpler than I thought. The instructions and tech support from Crutchfield was awesome. Saved me install charges and gave me a nice sense of satisfaction. As you probably noticed, in order to have a bigger screen relative to its predecessors, the USB and Aux inputs have been moved to the back of the unit. Not an issue for me, but some might find this a hassle, having to snake the cables to some opening in the front of the dash. Couple of things I encountered - The lightning cable that came with my iPhone 5 does not work. I had to use a 30-pin to 8-pin lightning adapter to the old 30-pin cable (thanks Apple!). It still plays only music and not videos or other apps. Another issue was that the Axxess ASWC steering wheel control module I purchased did not work since the X3500BHS unit is too new. The good folks at Metra Axxess offered to upgrade the software on the unit. So I had to unplug it and mail it to them. DVD replay is decent although I don't see myself ever watching a movie sitting in a parked car.

Pros: Good looks, great sound, intuitive features, responsive and sharp screen. Bluetooth - phone & audio - is flawless. HD Radio is cool. Got pretty much everything you I needed in a unit.

Cons: No full support for iOS 6 and no support for lightning connector. Wish there was an option to keep the clock display stay on when the screen display was turned off. Wish there were more animated backgrounds to choose from.

I received the unit 1 day after ordering. I installed it quickly but I already had a aftermarket unit in my vehicle. It does work with iPhone 5 all you need is the old 30 pin to USB and a new 30 pin to lightning adapter. You get sound, album art you can also control it from the unit. Pandora also works. Video I couldn't get to work but I knew that before buying. Awesome and works with iPhone 5 and charges at the same time.

The resolution of the display is 800 x 480 (RGB), for a total of 1,152,000 pixels. The touchscreen display allows you to control this unit and a connected component such as an iPod/iPhone, or USB mass storage class device. Menus appear on screen for making function choices, audio adjustments, and setting up the system. The unit has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier, because there is no panel to slide or fold-down. The fixed touchscreen display is not removable.

Multilingual Display: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS offers English, Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish text.

Video Adjustments: You can store numerous video settings for each source and the optional rear view camera; including brightness (adjusts the black intensity), contrast (adjusts contrast), color (adjusts color saturation), hue (adjusts the tone of color), and temperature (adjust the color temperature).

Widescreen Modes: You can choose from the following widescreen modes when playing back video:

    • Full: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the horizontal direction only, enabling you to enjoy a 4:3 picture without any omissions.
    • Zoom: A 4:3 picture is enlarged in the same proportion both vertically and horizontally; ideal for a 16:9 screen.
    • Normal: A 4:3 picture is displayed as it is.

On Screen Display Color & Background Adjustment: The color of the on-screen display can be set to red, amber, green, blue or white. The background can be set to one of four preset still images, a moving image, a stored JPEG image, or turned Off.

Front-Panel Control w/ Custom Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the left edge of the screen. The color of the button illumination can be set to red, amber, green, blue, white, or scan (constantly cycling through the color spectrum). You can also create a custom color to match your vehicle's interior lighting (112 colors to choose from).

Dimmer: To prevent the display from being too bright at night, the display is automatically dimmed when the car's headlights are turned on. The automatic dimmer function only works when the orange/white illumination wire in the wiring harness is connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Parking Brake Interlock: This unit has a parking brake interlock system that prohibits viewing of video programming and operating certain controls when the vehicle is in motion. In order to watch video on the in-dash monitor, the vehicle must be parked with the parking brake engaged. The head unit's light green wire must be connected to your vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. The head unit's touchscreen will display "Attention! Viewing of front seat video source while driving is strictly prohibited", if you try to watch a video when your vehicle is in motion.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double -DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in  your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AVH-X3500BHS without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer DEH-X8500BH.

Hands-Free Communication: The AVH-X3500BHS supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-X3500BHS allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-X3500BHS, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's on-screen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for the phone number by alphabet search mode.
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
    • Voice Control: If your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone is equipped with the voice control feature, you can use voice commands to make calls.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. HD Radio/SiriusXM Ready

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music.  HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multicasting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.
    • Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under presets 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

In addition, you will need an active Pandora music service account. Installation Angle: Optimum disc playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 30-degrees.

    Audio Section

24-Bit/96kHz DAC: For superb quality audio playback from DVDs, CDs, and flash media, the Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS is equipped with a 24-bit/96kHz digital-to-analog converter.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the AVH-X3500BHS are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 8-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 8-band graphic equalizer (40Hz, 80Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz, and10kHz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's rear-panel AUX 3.5mm input. The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Sonic Center Control: Sound that is suited for the listening position can easily be created with this function. You can adjust sound more toward the listening position left (7) to right (7).

Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

2V/6CH Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS features three pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The AVH-X3500BHS employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

Video Output: The AVH-X3500BHS features a rear-panel composite video output that allows you to connect an external display to the unit. You can play back the same video source (except iPhone 5) which is being played on the head unit. You can select the unit to output a 16:9, Letter-Box or Pan-Scan aspect ratio to match your external display's screen size.

Rear View Camera: The AVH-X3500BHS is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera input jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC5, sold separately) is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the violet/white wire in the AVH-X3500BHS's harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.9 seconds. Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U250 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC250, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

Note: If you are already using the head unit's RGB input to access AppRadio Mode from your iPhone, then you cannot connect this add-on navigation module (or vise-versa).

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS includes an IR remote control (CXE5116) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices. There are no controls to answer/end or dial call from your Bluetooth-enabled phone.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Great Bluetooth; wish it had a volume knob

Written by Dominic DeVito, Staff Writer - Creative, on 4/15/2013 4:46:00 PM
This Pioneer DVD receiver really shines in the Bluetooth department. It pairs easily and works great for streaming audio. And the display features a pop-up phone menu from a dedicated phone icon that makes it quick to get to phone functions without interrupting other functions on the screen. The receiver offers voice dialing, activated by hitting the icon on the pop-up menu, which then turns on Siri on my iPhone, so I can call people the same way I would do it on my phone through Siri. The display is a mixed bag: it looks great when within each individual function (nice big modern fonts in the background) but the home screen's icons are pretty small. Also: there's no volume knob, which is a bit of a drag. I'm sure getting used to the touch interface for volume and radio station seek would happen eventually, but I really prefer to have a knob handy.

Yes. It is under settings. [ JIM  Mar 15, 2014 ]
Yes. Brightness, contrast, color, hue, dimming, and color temperature can be set individually for daytime and nighttime. There are adjustments (not sure which, as I don't yet have one) for the rear view camera input as well. I'm not sure about adjustments for DVD or anything else since I mainly use it for USB music, HD Radio, and bluetooth calling. [ DAN  Mar 15, 2014 ]
Yes, but it's not as simple as the original unit. You need to enter settings, then you can adjust brightness, contrast, color, hue, dimmer and temperature. Probably not something you would want to adjust while driving. It's more of a "set it and forget it" sort of thing or making adjustments before starting a movie. [ MARK  Mar 15, 2014 ]
Yes it can be. Park your car go into settings and in there is where you can adjust the brightness and the dimmer effect of the head unit. [ CHRIS  Mar 15, 2014 ]
The ability to retain steering wheel controls with aftermarket receivers will be determined by the receiver you are using and the vehicle you have. For full information on this type of integration (including the parts you will need) please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Mar 10, 2014 ]  Staff
You need to go under Bluetooth settings and delete your old phone so you will have enough space for the new one. [ JIM  Mar 15, 2014 ]
Press the button with four squares on that allows you to select a different source. Press Bluetooth button, select connection; from there press the trash can symbol next to the iphone you want to unpair and confirm your choice. Hope this helps. [ VINCE  Mar 06, 2014 ]

Unforutunatly, I wouldn`t know myself because I call crutchfeild last night about purchasing sirius xm tuner for my radio. Sorry I couldn`t answer your question, if you get answer please let me know. Thanks Bridgett. [ BRIDGETT  Mar 03, 2014 ]
The display shows the channel, song name and artist. Not sure what you are looking for as far as a logo. [ ROBERT  Mar 03, 2014 ]
Unfortunately I cannot help you, as I am not currently using the satellite function of the radio. I can tell you that I love the radio & think it's features were not only exactly what I was looking for, but also enhanced the overall sound system in my Avalanche [ JON  Mar 03, 2014 ]
Chris, I installed this unit in my wife's Navigator and it sounds and looks great. As for your question, no, the Sitius logos for each station do not show up. I have tried everything and it seems that this is not possible with the unit. On the positive side, the ability to change the colors and themes is a awesome feature. I hope this helps. José [ JOSE  Mar 03, 2014 ]
Sorry, I can tell you it works great with a thumb drive, but I have never tried to attach an actual disk drive. My assumption is that it would work because they look "identical" on a computer when plugged into a USB port. But, that's just an assumption. [ Robert  Mar 02, 2014 ]
Hi, I don't know about using your hard drive with the ED Passport, however I was so disappointed with the Pioneer AVH-X3500BHS, that I returned it and installed an Alpine unit. The Pioneer is balky, has tiny virtual buttons on huge screen that id filled with useless graphics. The hands free phone function relies on the phone's voice commands rather than internal function. I don't know why Crutchfield promotes a such mediocre product. [ DENNIS  Feb 28, 2014 ]
I tried it with a 160GB USB hard drive and it didn't work. I tried it with a 8 GB stick and it worked, bit it took a whole to load the files. Hoe it helps. [ MIKE  Feb 28, 2014 ]
    Not sure. Sorry [ PRODIGY  Feb 28, 2014 ]
No, it does not. It is a great unit. [ TERRY L  Mar 07, 2014 ]
No the radio does not have a detachable face plate. Though for both my cars it came with the exact dash mount surrounding the radio (replacing the stock version). Hope this helps. [ ANGELA  Feb 28, 2014 ]
    No it doesn't [ JOSHUA  Feb 27, 2014 ]
I really don't think so. About 98% positive but I can check my car if you'd like [ RYKER  Feb 26, 2014 ]

I also have a iPhone 5 and the gps does not show on my screen. If u figure it out please let me know how u did it [ MICHAEL L  Feb 16, 2014 ]
I'm not sure how the GPS works. But with pandora it mirrors both on the unit and my phone. Crutch field should be able to answer the question for what people purchase [ MATTHEW  Feb 16, 2014 ]
Zach, I apologize, I have not tried this feature yet. I do have both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s and will probably try this out in a couple of months when I have a little more time to configure my system. [ Dilip  Feb 16, 2014 ]
I think the audio is the only thing. There is no indication that a display is forwarded to the stereo, especially since Pioneer sells a GPS receiver for the unit. [ ROBERT  Feb 16, 2014 ]
Im sorry i dont have a iphone to answer you question [ ANTHONY  Feb 16, 2014 ]
Sorry Mike I don't have I phone. I use the android system and my Pioneer 3500 will give turn by turn directions that plays through and interrupts when updating you which seems to work great [ JOHN D  Feb 11, 2014 ]
Adding later would require uninstalling the unit to access the rear. If that is practical then yes, you can add later. You also have the option of connecting your iPhone through Bluetooth but you will not have screen control of any music. I have not seen a cheaper option. The cable is very well made and if you put in your glove box and open and close as I do, you will appreciate the heavy sheathing. [ MIKE  Feb 10, 2014 ]
You buy the adapter from Crutchfield. It connects to the back of the Pioneer. There are no front connects. It takes up a lot of space behind the unit. There are convertor modules in the cable. I had to cut a lot of plastic behind the dashboard to get it to fit in an 2003 Buick Enclave. [ MIKE  Feb 10, 2014 ]

it does have aux inputs but I'm not sure if it would work in your application [ DAVID  Jan 15, 2014 ]
Probably not. You'll have to trace down the madza cord and compare the ends. I would guess your stock aux input is hardwired to your vehicles radio harness. It's very easy to route the pioneers aux input to a location convenient in your vehicle [ COREY R  Jan 15, 2014 ]
Dunno cant answer that I put mine in a gmc [ ANTHONY  Jan 15, 2014 ]
Greg, Yes, this unit has the capability for a backup camera. It has an input for a video cable coming from the backup camera you choose. This unit has a reverse wire that is included in the wiring harness. Once connected, it will automatically turn on the screen for your backup camera when it senses the signal that the vehicle had been placed in reverse. [ JAMES  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Greg, Under the Expandability section, the description states this receiver has rear-view camera input. How it will work depends on how you hook it up. If you power it from the reverse lights circuit it will come on only when in reverse. The installation instructions with the receiver says to hook it to the power, which means it can be turned on whenever. There is a screen icon on the home screen, which lets you turn it on anytime. [ Richard  Dec 30, 2013 ]
According to the instructions, yes. I have not installed mine yet. But, I am als0 not going to be using a back up camera. Download the user manual for more specifics. Good Luck. [ MIKE  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Yes, it does have that capability. Unfortunatly, I did not attempt to connect. [ DANNY  Dec 28, 2013 ]
Yes it does. Seems to be fairly easy to install and is automatically wired to engage when you shift to reverse, [ KEN  Dec 26, 2013 ]
I brought this DVD player ...haven't hooked it up yet ... but from what I know and looking at it there should be no problem hooking up a backup camera [ GEORGE W  Dec 26, 2013 ]
It does have backup camera but I haven't installed it yet so I don't know any other details. Dave [ David  Dec 26, 2013 ]
I got the 3500 in a few weeks ago for my 2014 wrx. I have a Backup camera hooked up to it and if I put the car in reverse it comes on automatically also with the way I wired it I use the tail lamp for the hot wire so the camera always has power, With the power always being there you can go on the home screen on the head unit and press the camera icon and have it show up without the car being in reverse. As far as the instillation goes there is 2 wires that go to the camera from the head unit A video wire and a trigger for the reverse.. it took me around 5-10 min to hook it up.. Also once you have everything installed you have to go into the head unit menu and choose your instillation to have it work automatically when put into reverse. hope this helps ya [ CHRIS  Dec 26, 2013 ]
Hi Greg, This unit does have Rear Camera input. I am not yet using this feature, so I can't really give much insight. According to what I've read, it can be fully automatic and manually turned on. It looks like the only hard part to installing a Rear View Can is running the cable thru the car. There are several videos onYoutube that may help you. Hope this helps. [ Phillip  Dec 26, 2013 ]
It is backup camera usable you need to go into the settings and look for camera.I have not used the camera. But it hooks up to the back of the stereo in the video hook up.if you need more info I'll try and post it when I have time. [ KEVIN T  Dec 26, 2013 ]
Reading through the says it can handle a backup camera. I bought one online and will try to install. Got the head unit for Christmas and will install this week. Rich A from San Antone [ Richard  Dec 26, 2013 ]
Modified fit means that there will be some level of modification needed to get this to fit. This may be very slight or could be more involved. You will want to contact an Advisor by phone or online chat to discuss further. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and let you know about the level of modification. If it seems like too much, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Jeff  Dec 26, 2013 ]  Staff
    Not sure I'm still using 4S [ CHARLES S  Dec 26, 2013 ]
It works with my iPhone 5. I pump most stuff through my blue tooth. Down loads through iTunes are flawless . Occasional music through YouTube have buffering issues. But overall I love the system. [ AARON K  Dec 22, 2013 ]
"work flawlessly" is a little subjective. It does really well with bluetooth from the 5s, and you can hold the button on the left to reach Siri just fine, but without a special adapter cable (retails for $100) you won't be showing any iPhone apps on-screen. What's more is that the video interface for this unit (2013) is VGA (analog), whereas the new 2014 Pioneers have an HDMI interface. I didn't buy the cable for mine, but I think the cable adapter is simpler with the new one. I haven't plugged my iPhone into the usb cable for the "iPod interface", so no feedback on the quality or capability there. For me the Bluetooth connection is sufficient in terms of sound quality and function. One other thing to consider is that the unit will not permit you to play dvd video while the car is moving. [ THOMAS  Dec 22, 2013 ]
It will work with the iPhone 5s but not flawlessly, there is an update for the head unit that is supposed to allow it to work better when you plug it into the unit. I have yet to install the update yet because I was not really worried about plugging it in. I do use it with blue tooth so as to do hands free calling and what not and it does work that way fantastically! [ ROBERT F  Dec 21, 2013 ]
Unfortunately, no. While some features work as expected, it's far from flawless. I hear ANDROID users get access to additional features and have an overall better experience, but if seamless integration is what you're after I would start looking at some higher dollar models. [ JACOB DIETZ -  Dec 21, 2013 ]
Yes my iPhone 5s works great with this unit. I have had zero issues with the functionality between the pioneer AVH - X3500BHS and the iPhone 5S [ GREH  Dec 21, 2013 ]
Thanks everyone for responses. I was getting for a Toyota Sienna XLE and glovebox seems to be a bit far. I need it for charging cell phone etc. more than USB connectivity. Though I have the cig lighter adapter, the usb in front would be handy like I have in my newer Ford F150. I will see if the extension cabe can come into the CD box Sienna has below the gear lever than glove box for easier accessibility during driving. [ m.r.n  Dec 21, 2013 ]
The unit came with a USB extention cord. I have mine hidden in the glove box, that way its accessible but not hanging from the front of the unit. Honestly it looks cleaner not having wires visible and still having that feature offered. [ ANDRE  Dec 21, 2013 ]
The USB does come from the back.. With a cable extension you can either run it to the glove box or in my case the center console storage compartment. I can't remember if it includes the cable. You should be able to snake the cable to where you want to go without punching a hole. This is a great unit. Hope it helps. [ Winthrop  Dec 21, 2013 ]

No there is no USB port in the front of this head unit. It comes with an extension cable that you plug into the only USB port which is in the back of the unit and it then dangles from the underside of the dash. I suppose one can imagine some other clever way of installing it if willing to invest the brain power. Another way is scratching that plan and purchasing a mountable USB port from an electronics store and install it directly into the dash. I did this with the auxiliary jack which is also in the back of the head unit. It makes the install look much more professional. As for the USB cable, I have a cup holder/tray ensemble under the dash that the dangling cable rests nicely in. No need for the added expense of the dash mount. [ STEPHEN H  Dec 21, 2013 ]
there is no front usb port as for the back it will depend on the type of car or truck you have i have a 03 chevy silverado and i have room to fish the i pod cable into my glove box bu if you don't have the room do not drill into your dash you might hit something and screw up your car and decrease the value of it if you would ever like to sell it and keep your radio. get an extension usb cable and fish it under your dash or if you have to drill ,do so at an angle on the side top or bottom of the install kit that comes with the radio . just keep it clean . i hope this helps good luck [ CHRIS R  Dec 20, 2013 ]
I ran the usb cable from the rear into my glovebox. There's not a usb port on the front of the unit. However, it's rarely used since the bluetooth functionality is much more convenient. [ LEWIS W  Dec 20, 2013 ]
There is a long USB cord that connects in the back and in my Malibu comes out near the aux charger below the radio. [ BOB  Dec 20, 2013 ]
I don't have a 5 I have a 4S but to hook it up I just use my standard charge/sync cable and plug it into the usb port on the radio. also you can just bluetooth it if you want to and that work well also. [ JOHN E  Dec 20, 2013 ]
You don't need any separate components. Just use bluetooth to connect your phone and receiver. [ ELIJAY  Dec 20, 2013 ]
According to my research the "kit" is all you need. Other financial priorities have kept me from taking that particular plunge just for navigation. The Bluetooth pairing works beautifully for both iphone and iTunes on both iPhone 4S and 5s . I also have the iPod adapter which becomes unusable with the full Kit. Its (iPod adapter) actually redundant because of the Bluetooth pairing on the iPhone. Sorry that I can't be more help. Crutch field tech support was extremely helpful to me during initial installation and setup for stereo, xm radio adapter and steering wheel interface. [ JEFFREY  Dec 19, 2013 ]
I have used a 4S by hooking up a standard USB extension cord to the rear USB port of the radio and plugging the Apple 30 pin cord into the extension cord. It works fine like that. It also works well over Bluetooth. I have a new 5S but haven't had a chance to try it yet. [ AJR  Dec 19, 2013 ]
It depends whether you want to play video from your iPhone or use the "App Radio" mode where the interface for an iPhone app runs on the receiver screen. I wasn't very interested in doing either of these things - the selection of compatible App Radio apps is small and uninspiring and who wants to watch a video on their car radio only while parked. For regular music and other audio use, all you'll need is an old-style 30-pin dock connector cable to plus into the supplied USB cable, and then one of the 30-pin to lightning adapters to connect it to your car. For some reason I don't think you can use a straight USB to lightning cable - I think it's because the lightning cable doesn't output analog audio. To be honest, even though I have the connector cable, I often just use Bluetooth to play audio. You lose the album art and (I think?) the ability to search for music on the receiver instead of the iPhone. But the ease of use of Bluetooth (it automatically reconnects and starts playing where you last left off every time you start the car) means that I often don't bother with the cable. Siri works pretty well over Bluetooth too using the included mic. [ ANDREW  Dec 19, 2013 ]
James- it depends on what you're wanting to do with your phone. If want to view video, use Netflix or navigation apps, then you'll need a special adapter and cable. If you only want to pull music from the phone, then the supplied cable and your factory iPhone cable will work just fine. I hope this helps! [ JASON  Dec 19, 2013 ]
Technically there are two parts of the solution. 1. You will need the lightning cable to connect your iPhone5s. 2. There is a software update for the head that will allow it to work properly with your device. [ CHRIS  Dec 19, 2013 ]
It will also work with an iPhone using the dock connector cable (with a lightning adapter if it's an iPhone5/5s/5c). But like Chris says you'll have to control the app on your iPhone, not the receiver. [ ANDREW  Dec 19, 2013 ]
It will work if streamed from the BT audio. However you will not have control over the app unless you're controlling it from your phone. [ CHRIS  Dec 19, 2013 ]
I have not used Spotify however I have used Google play. There's a bluetooth media source for the radio so whatever sound plays over your phone can play. Yes even YouTube videos lol. I tend to use the Pandora app because when it is used it cuts the adds out for you! Hope this helps! [ JUSTIN  Dec 19, 2013 ]
    No [ PRODIGY  Dec 18, 2013 ]
I have not tried an audio book on a USB drive, but have a lot of music on a USB so should be the same. The head unit will remember and pick up right where you left off as long as the USB stays plugged in. If you unplug it then it has to re read the drive and will not keep your place. Yes you can pause music on the USB. Not sure if the USB pauses or just mutes when receiving a call. I've never payed attention. I just know the sound turns off. [ RYAN  Dec 14, 2013 ]
Thanks Scott, you confirmed what Vincent answered. Sounds like it will be the perfect head unit for us. [ GMLSD  Dec 13, 2013 ]
I have never tried an audio book but it does remember where you were in music and video, even if you remove the usb drive, as long as you don't install a different usb drive in between. Yes it pauses music or video during a call. I have the Sirius/xm tuner that goes with that radio and it is amazing. it records up to 6 channels at a time, so you can scan and play back hours of music. it also pauses live music during a call. I hope my answer helps. [ Z28lt1Scott  Dec 13, 2013 ]
Vincent, thanks for the detailed information, that is perfect and really appreciate your time. [ GMLSD  Dec 13, 2013 ]
The radio remembers where you left off and picks up once you begin again. If you remove the USB and re-insert, it will start at the beginning; if its' a book then it will go to chapter 1. You can pause audio book /music on a usb. If you receive a call over Bluetooth the music will pause and resume after the call is complete. Thanks Vincent W B [ VINCENT W  Dec 12, 2013 ]
You can pause and play anything through the buttons on any USB drive. And whenever I turn my car on and off it remembers where my phone stopped playing when it's hooked up through USB or whenever I unplug and plug it in as long as I don't mess with the music on my phone. So I would assume I it was a memory stick that it would pick up and stop at the same point. But I could be wrong. As far as when someone calls you. It pauses the music and lets you talk through the speakers and mic if you hook the mic up to it ( it's included. You mount it somewhere in the car) [ RYAN  Dec 12, 2013 ]
    I have not used that function. [ WILLIAM  Dec 12, 2013 ]
you need to use the the ipod cable that will support video it has an 1/8 inch jack that plugs in the back of the unit plus the normal usb plug. this cable will work for video and also music the standard ipod cable will only work with music and you will have to switch ipods for music and books . the video is going to be on the ipod input not aux. the aux is for an external dvd player or game system i hope this helps you and good luck happy holidays [ CHRIS R  Dec 20, 2013 ]
I used mine via Bluetooth. But you should be able to plug it in with the ipod usb cord. If you use the headphone to headphone aux cord, you will only be able to put the ipod on play and listen that way. Does this make sense? I know the unit is compatible with a whole bunch of older ipods. [ COREY R  Dec 12, 2013 ]
I got mine hook up to the USB connection [ JOSE E  Dec 12, 2013 ]
Just press the button with the four squares then press system, then look for aux input and select on that should fix your problem or you can use a USB cable to connect your iPod [ ROBERTO  Dec 12, 2013 ]
The biggest differences are that the AVH-X3500 includes HD Radio and is compatible with SiriusXM, while the 2500 does not have these features. [ Jeff  Dec 03, 2013 ]  Staff
I am not sure with android, but it does with iphone [ MICHAEL G  Nov 29, 2013 ]
Yes I've used this function in Toledo Ohio recently and it works quite well.I also have android system phone Samsung galaxy note two. [ JOHN D  Nov 29, 2013 ]
I can't speak from experience with an Android, but my if I have my iPhone 5 linked to my AVH-X3500BHS via Bluetooth, then phone calls, incoming alerts, and navigation all take precedence over music automatically. It's a great feature that works very well. It works seamlessly with my iPhone and would be willing to bet money it works seamlessly with Android as well. I hope this helps! [ CANDONINO R  Nov 29, 2013 ]
Only the audio if you connect Bluetooth or hard wire. The image will still just be on your phone, but the audio should play through your speakers [ ERIK  Nov 29, 2013 ]
    works great [ SEAN MC  Dec 05, 2013 ]
It use your Speakers in car and has a mic where can install anywhere in your vehicle work good for me seems to be problems [ JAMIL  Nov 29, 2013 ]
It works pretty well for me. It may be your microphone placement. [ WHITNEY  Nov 29, 2013 ]
Alex, I have installed this in a jeep, as long as I am parked or driving below 45 mph, and talk in a normal voice I am able to attend conference calls all my co workers comment that it sound as good as my land line, and better then my cell phone. [ ANTHONY  Nov 29, 2013 ]
I bought the deck for my girlfriend to go in her 05 expedition. Put it in myself. So far it has been working great with her galaxy s3 . As soon as she turns her truck on it wants to connect with it. She plays misic through bluetooth alot. Seems to be workin just fine. I personally likr it. I shoulda bought it for myself lol [ SHANNON D  Nov 27, 2013 ]
I have a iphone4s it works super and the pioneer aps are great. I can't comment on android the radio is great for the money [ SHAUNA  Nov 26, 2013 ]
Works ok, I use Bluetooth and Pandora, no track time on screen only able to use next and previous track in bluetooth [ MICHAEL  Nov 26, 2013 ]
