Our take on the Pioneer FH-X520UI

Go big, go bold

Fill the 4" tall dash opening in your car with Pioneer's FH-X520UI CD receiver. This striking receiver covers the space with a multi-color display that lets you choose from thousands of colors — you can even set up one color for the display and another for the buttons. For some extra visual excitement, MIXTRAX syncs the audio from many of your sources, adding transitions between songs along with a light show that pulses and changes color with the beat of the music — like cruising down the road with your own personal DJ on board. (Need Bluetooth? Check out Pioneer's FH-X720BT CD receiver.)

Pioneer FH-X520UI

Customize the display and button colors to match your car.

Plenty of music and media options

Plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input, and you'll be able to control your music files and playlists. If you're a Pandora® fan, you'll have control of your favorite stations from the receiver when your iPhone's connected, plus you can create stations on the fly. You can also use the USB input to tap into the music files stored on many Android devices, while the front aux input handles just about any other audio source. If you can't live without CDs, you'll enjoy stellar playback of your store-bought and home-burned discs.

You shape the sound

Pioneer's potent MOSFET amplifier delivers plenty of power, and you can use the 5-band EQ to shape the sound for your vehicle. You can also switch quickly between seven preset equalizer curves to get the sound you're looking for during your drive. The two pairs of preamp outputs make it easier to add external amplifiers or a powered sub.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The radio works phenomenally in my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. The bells and chimes still work and the sound is much cleaner, and with a few changes to the settings the bass sounds better than the stock head unit; the speaker on the driver's door wasn't working when I got it but I just popped it open and turns out that the wire for that speaker just got disconnected so I reconnected it and it started working beautifully. My only complaint thus far is that the time display is difficult to read in the light, but this isn't a problem for me personally.

Pros: -Sounds better than stock unit -Very easy installation -Retains bells and whistles -Got it at a discounted price through the dent and scratch option -Looks great in my car

    Cons: -Time display too dim

Terrific receiver/CD player! It sound great with all-new speakers! The large piano-black face is gorgeous and the control color are incredible. Love it!

Pros: Gorgeous, so many color choices for the lights!

Cons: I had it professionally installed, and they could not get it mounted on the factory mount, as the MasterSheet says. So, they made a custom mount that looks great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice head unit for the price. Crisp, clean, balanced sound out of the cars stock speakers. The controls seem unnecessarily complicated; I've never had to read the manual to figure out how to use a car stereo before. The display is great during the evening, but completely unreadable during the day; I can't imagine ever using the dimmer function. The unit has a separate ground wire that needs to be connected outside of the wiring harness; this is the first time I've encountered this issue using an adapter. Not a big deal but again, I'm experienced enough that I generally don't need to read the manual to install.

Pros: Crisp, clean & balanced sound. Minimalist face plate. Display color can be customized to match.

Cons: Display is too dim to read during the day, even on highest brightness. Controls not user friendly; need to cycle through inputs instead of selecting. Android compatibility limited to reading file storage; cannot use a music app like Google Music or Pandora.

    2010 Chevrolet Silverado
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Headunit and great price! Purchased this to replace stock HU in 2010 Silverado, along with a wire harness and mounting kit. Install was a breeze with wire harness and everything works great. You can change the lighting color and brightness (I keep it dim to resemble the rest of the interior) and the built-in EQ is great for tuning the sound for your preference. Overall I highly recommend this if you're looking for a good HU at a low price.

Pros: Built-in Equalizer Various light color options Brightness adjustability USB and Aux plug-in in front for connecting external devices Remote control CD drive Subwoofer plug-in rear for adding an amp

Cons: glossy surface gets dirty (finger smudges and dust) easily IPhone will occasionally not work via USB port, Error-19. Easy fix is to disconnect phone and hard reset iPhone then reconnect it after it has completely turned back on.

Looks good but for someone that is not to tech savvy it's kinda hard to navigate to the different settings. The AM local channels are not as clear as the oe radio. Installation and related components fit well. I did have to cut out some of the plastic behind the radio to get it to fit back far enough. The sound is great and I do love it

Too complicated. I wanted a simple radio/CD player, and was pleased to have the USB port as an extra, but setting up the system, even something as simple as the clock, has been a total pain, and the instruction booklet is of little help. As an added annoyance, the system changes colors every ten? seconds, and while the booklet touts the fact that you can choose from thousands of colors, I just want one, and so far haven't figured out how to get it. The display is almost invisible, especially in daylight(we have to shade the display to read it). However, both the radio and the CD player work fine, and perhaps with time we'll figure it out. I could done without the aggravation, though. I sent a note to Pioneer about one of the issues - still waiting for a reply.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this for my '99 Lexus ES300 mainly because i despise those useless boxes that come with a smaller head unit to take up space-this is definitely the way to to go-easiest install Ever-and I have done Lots over the years. I was skeptical of the unit working through all 7 factory speakers (using factory amp)-and though for sure my fears would be confirmed as I had power up but no sound, but with a quick call to Crutchfield support team I was instructed to use the antennae turn on that I had neglected. Turns out that actually powers the factory amp in my car-Crutchfield tech knew immediately what my problem was-these guys are absolutely the best! Anyway i highly recommend purchasing from Crutchfield and for an extremely reasonable price this Pioneer unit is definitely a good buy. I have always had the best luck with Pioneer head units-I have owned Kenwood, Sony, and a couple of others, but have found Pioneer to be the most reliable. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Easy install-great display which can be customized for color and brightness-smooth operating cd player-great sound.

    Cons: none

Fits the bill for my Trans Am. Customer Service Team Member Zeke answered all of my questions promptly and got the correct adapter to retain my steering wheel controls. I also like the ability to customize the display so that I can match my original gauge lighting.

Pros: Much better sound quality than the factory Monsoon stereo provided. It is now much louder with less distortion using the same speakers.

Cons: Not all steering wheel controls work. I could have done something incorrectly during the install but have not worried with attempting to fix it. Volume and track selection work and that was all I really wanted anyhow.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this in my fiance's 2005 Honda CR-V EX. We both love the mixtrax mode, and being able to customize the display color, she loves the bright pink i like matching it the orange of the factory lights, I was very surprised at how light this unit is, and the majority of the inside of the unit is empty. I went with this head unit because my brother has one of these in his 4runner, we both like the double Din size, and with the trim piece installed it fits very well into the dash opening. The front USB port is perfect, and the little door that covers it is very cool too!.

Pros: immediate improvement in sound quality over stock, easy to set up, wide range of color options for display, great iPhone compatibility and charging.

Cons: none of the screws that came with unit that are used to mount the factory deck brackets to the aftermarket head unit really fit flush or well, but they can't be seen and it only bothers my OCD nature.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The headunit is good for increasing sound quality, which is exactly what I got it for. However, the only thing keeping this from being a five star rating, is that it makes my subwoofer sound like trash. Whatever it did, my subwoofer now only sounds out really low notes; it resembles that of thunder. I don't exactly want to listen to a low rumble in the back of every song. I'm sure it's user error that's done it, but I have no idea how to fix it. Now I can't listen to music without an obnoxiously loud bass in the background. My old headunit allowed me to adjust the bass how I please; this one has settings for the bass but it won't fix the trashy sound it's reduced my subwoofer to. I'm not sure what I did wrong with it, but it certainly does not sound how it used to. Other than it nullifying my $400 subwoofer, the sound quality is nicer in my car and the headunit has a cool display. If there is any sunlight, however, you will not be able to read the display.

Pros: Good sound quality Cool display

Cons: Expensive Will have to heavily modify the settings if you have a subwoofer Cannot see the display at all if there is any light outside

I purchased this unit to replace my stock unit which went out on me. It was easy to install with the recommended wiring harness. I would recommend purchasing wiring connectors for a better install. I just used electrical tape. It took me 2 hours in total for my Toyota Yaris.

    Pros: Easy to use

Cons: No dedicated on/off button. Cannot keep led lighting to just 1 color mode.

The site recommended all the right stuff to install this unit into my 2006 GMC Sierra with the 7 Speaker Bose speaker system. Fairly easy install once I got the harnesses attached and heat shrink on the wires. Maintained all the functionality (+ steering wheel controls) I had before plus added all the features my 17 year old son wanted (Blue tooth, iPod interface, etc). Tech support was quick to answer my only question. About 2 weeks in, unit started doing radio station searches at random times. Called Tech support and they had a new unit in the mail with a return shipping label that day. Customer service that is top-notch which is unusual in today's world!

Pros: Clean and Easy install. Cool functions. Great Price and Value!

Cons: Interior dash mods were not exactly in line with the instructions. I had to cut material from the lower area in the back of the mounting well vice the top (per the instructions.

This thing sounds great, compared to the OEM Ford radio it replaced. The fit in the dash was good, and the trim made the job look professional. The buttons and controls left me underwhelmed. Controls not as simple and intuitive as the old Ford stereo it replaced. Too easy to end up in the menu, while trying to switch modes (say radio to cd). Lighting colors and brightness can display many variations, which is a nice feature.

Pros: Good sound, both radio and cd player Lighting and colors offer many user variations Fit well in the dash

Cons: Buttons and controls not found to be intuitive or well placed Difficult to read buttons and display, especially in bright light

First I'd like to say the Reciever really made my 05 Scion tC come alive with factory door speakers and a kicker 400.1 amp complemented by a 10" JL w0 series subwoofer. Has many display color options to pick from to match your dash colors. My only complaint is the brightness during days of decent sunlight, you cannot see anything on the screen and I'm assuming it may have to do with the curvature of the screen reason I rated it 4 stars more like 4.5. Besides the sun glare/ brightness issue this is a solid radio and I'm sure would be phenomenal with I decent set of components.. Pioneer has never let me down and is actually the only stereo I will purchase for my vehicles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upside: All around, I love it and I made the right choice. This stereo sounds great and is easy to use. I use it with my iPhone primarily and have had no issues at all. It sounds great and was reasonably priced. I would highly recommend this product. Downside: I rated the "Coolness Factor" at 3 stars because 1) I think it's an unnecessary and irrelevant category. 2) If coolness is based on the level of crazy multi color lights on the display, I would rate it 3 stars. I can't stand the crazy light thing. I believe my stock stereo looks cooler because it isn't trying so hard. What is with the lights? It's like these stereos with their lights are the definition of cool from a guy wearing shades indoors at night with a flipped up fluorescent polo shirt from the 80's. So no, it's not cool unless you are that guy. Personally, I think a stereo that looks stock and behaves aftermarket is rockstar level sexy. At this price point though, this is the most understated appearance I could find with the options I wanted. All is not lost here (that is why I give it 3 stars and not 0) because the lights can be adjusted to glow one color as explained by a Customer Service guy. I gave the build quality 4 stars because of the installation kit doesn't work with all cars. I will leave a full review on the kit itself. All in all: I will use Crutchfield for as long as they are around. Fantastic website and the best customer service of any company I have ever worked with.

Pros: Great product, ease of use, compatible with my needs, great value, would recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade.

Cons: Lights are a little over the top. The installation brackets are NOT universal as described. It may work fine for other cars but I have a 2006 Ford Focus ZX3 and they didn't work for me. I ended up having to snap off large pieces of the bracket just to get it to fit in the opening properly. It is still slightly crooked because clearly the brackets provided do not work. I'm not going to fuss about it and re-install though because I can't be bothered. I made it work but buyer beware.

This is a pretty amazing radio for the cost point. It has all the bells and whistles - cd, aux imput, Ipod control, USB, Bluetooth, etc. The sound quality is great and the changing color display is cool. The negatives about the radio are the controls. Moving through the menus to adjust brightness, EQ settings, effects, and whatever else are cumbersome at best and downright maddening at worst. Pioneer would have done well to simplify the menu and the common adjustments. Aside from that, the radio is a real bargin. Lots of bang for your buck.

Cons: The design of the menus is idiotic

Easy install.Changing light pattern is really good not to bright as some have said also has dimmer switch on face plate. DJ mix option is only available with ipod usb device and is kinda like a scan for music, DJ mix works better with pop/hip hop style music kinda muddled with classic rock but still cool with the light show.overall very happy.

Pros: Easy install with all that Crutchfield sends with your purchase. I have a Mach 460 Ford sound system and read tons of complaints about trying to hook up an aftermarket head unit but i had no problems.

Cons: Getting the sound settings(loudness, Bass Boost,Hertz, ...)adjusted takes some trial and error. Could be because of the stock speaker set up but once it is adjusted sounds great even with top down.

I did a lot of research before making the decision to buy this product. I was looking for the best sound and aesthetic features for my buck without paying for a bunch of bells and whistles I wasn't going to use. I also wanted something to replace a factory stereo that I could install myself without any unexpected surprises or expenses.

Pros: Installation was easier than I imagined using the instructions provided to me. The flashing multi colors weren't quite my thing, so I was pleased to find I could choose the color I wanted and customize from there. Using the 5 band equalizer I was able to tailor the quality sound to get those crisp sharp highs to shine perfectly within those smooth deep lows.

Cons: I only found one feature that made me feel more could be done to improve. The mix feature promises the ability to give you a track presentation like that of a club or DJ. I expected the songs on my playlist to transition into one another smoothly taking into consideration beats per minute like on some DJ apps. Instead the track you are listening to is interrupted using a sound effect and the next track starts abruptly say 30 seconds in by another sound effect.

Great looking radio, love that you can let it run thru the colors and not set one specific color. Or if you choose you can set it to one color. I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler and they said it was a modified fit, well the modification was a mm cut, was basically nothing. Very easy installation

This is a great product for the money. Gave me all the features I needed without having to spend a lot of money. Looks and sounds terrific in my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500!

Pros: Lots of EQ options, love the media plugins, the built-in amp provides plenty of power to push my door speakers and when coupled with my remote subwoofer makes for a solid overall sound.

Cons: A bit of a learning curve to navigate the menus but I don't think there is a way around that.

I installed this new unit in about an hour and a half. Had to call tech support just for knowledge of unused wires and they were right on top of their game. In a matter of minutes they easily explained which wires I wouldn't use and my radio was in and running flawlessly shortly after.

Pros: Sound quality is amazing, display is bright and vibrant, easy to install even with a simple modification required.

My kids Bose stereo died in their Maxima and we were looking for a good product with a USB port for their iphones. This fit the need perfect, all the accessories included were a huge help. Needed one phone call to confirm a wiring setup, but old out and new in, in less than an hour. I would recommend Crutchfield add the Bojo trim panel tools into the accessories when being bought. They were a lifesaver.

Pros: Easy to install; kids love the look of the unit; easy to use.

Cons: Wiring of power antenna was not very clear, but one phone call to Crutchfield cleared that up.

This is a solid and well functioning head unit for a great price. It has a built-in mosfet amplifier which works well to power most after market speakers. It has two pairs of rca preamp outputs, which is nice if you are adding an amp and sub to your system. Overall a good double din stereo receiver.

Pros: Preamp outputs. Mosfet amp. Great price. Double din. Slick looks.

Cons: No dedicated subwoofer preamp output. No hd radio.

I bought this head unit to replace my Mach 1000 in my 04 GT. It was basically a color match plug and play. My father and I got this installed in about 30 minutes (I had to go find wirenuts) and turned it on. The most majestic of all melodies filled my ears when I heard the amazing quality bursting forth from my two 10's in the back. Never before had I heard such range of bass. This is a beautiful replacement for the crappy Mach 1000 6 CD Changer.

Pros: AUX, USB, Sub Control, Color Variety, Bass Boost, Easy Installation

    Cons: Kinda hard to program

Overall, a good product. Installation was easy. I have never installed an after market stereo. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Sound is good. I like the color selection for the display.

Pros: Good price especially for a student on a budget. Looks great in the car. Several complements on sound/looks.

Cons: The flimsy GM dash kit. But that is a separate review. Would not prevent me from recommending the stereo - I had to ask my dad to help.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are not looking for a lot of features (bluetooth, NAV, DVD, etc.) this is a great product. Used this as a factory radio replacement due to a non-working CD. Couldn't be happier with the upgrade. More power than the factory radio - makes the upgraded speakers sound really good, plus now have iPhone and iPod functionality. Can stream Spotify and Pandora through the iPhone. Other reviews have talked about display being either too bright or too dim. I believe the bigger problem is the glossy surface on the radio which makes it difficult to read during daylight hours. May look into a matte finish cling film to see if that helps.

Pros: Good sound, great value. Crutchfield installation kit is a huge bonus! Easy to install and wire.

I got this for my 2006 Impreza Outback Sport. It was a perfect fit and the installation was a breeze. I had never installed any car audio equipment before, and I had this in and working in under 1.5 hours (if you are familiar with this type of electronic installation, I'm sure you could have it done in half the time.) Its been in my car for 3 weeks now with no issues and working great). Whether I'm playing the radio or listening to tunes on my Samsung Galaxy Note (haven't tried the USB playback mode yet, but the phone works fine through the AUX port) the sound is clear and loud - if I want it loud. Definitely recommend.

I absolutely LOVE my new Pioneer FH-X520UI Head Unit. It does everything I asked for in a new tuner for my '05 Tundra. It's easy to dial in my favorite sound with the wide variety of EQ settings. I couldn't decide on which awesome display color to keep, so I just set the display to scan ALL the colors while I'm cranking the tunes! I just wish I upgraded my factory stereo a long time ago...

Pros: Easy install Great sound Great control Beautiful display with lots of options Great tech support iTunes & Pandora via USB Steering wheel controls LOUD!

Cons: I needed a line level booster wired to the speaker output wires to increase the power to my factory amp. This was not included in my original order, but CRUTCHFIELD sent it to me for FREE!

This is a lot of radio for the money. The five band equalizer, plus bass boost function allow you to tailor the sound a bit more than other receivers. The only drawback is that the dot matrix part of the display is very difficult to see on bright, sunny days. You'd have to spend quite bit more on another brand for the same features, but at least you would be able to see the display. You get what you pay for, but for the money, this is a decent choice.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third Pioneer over the years. I chose this new model because it is packed with today's tech at good value. USB and mini jack -ports for auxiliaries are a must. Traditionally the power is suffice to feed my (factory) speakers. For other Toyota Matrix owners I would like to tell to be careful when installing back the dash bezel. The original rack is metal. The new is plastic. Bezel has "claws" on left and right sides, which need to be snipped off before the bezel sits tight around the unit. Then it looks good and sounds great. Pioneer packs a punch in this set up very well.

Pros: Price / value. Pioneer receiver looks like a factory installation in my night time cockpit. Thank you for the many color choices, out of which, one matched Matrix.

Cons: Installation Kit needs a lot of trimming off the extra plastic. Make sure to read the instructions on correct line (your vehicle) before you cut your 1st cut.

First radio arrived and was installed per instructions using the dash kit and wiring harness kit for the unit. After a couple of days the unit would turn on but no sound came through the speakers. Then I stopped turned off the vehicle, restarted the vehicle and the unit would operate as it should. Checked all connections and nothing found. Then a few days later it did the same thing. I pushed the CD eject button and the sound came back. Contacted the tech support and Austin had another unit shipped to me. I was told to wait to send the first unit back until I was satisfied the second unit would function properly. After 10 days of flawless operation there were no problems found. Radio functions great. Good sound from the factory speakers. I feel like the situation was handled well and that I was taken seriously. Thanks Crutchfield and Austin.

Song/Artist Information: During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information; including artist, song, and album name.

Playback Controls: The Pioneer CD receiver provides basic operations like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track, and Repeat/Random for disc and USB device playback. When a compatible Android smartphone is connected, the head unit will control music playback functions; you will not be able to control your music from the smartphone.

Off Insert/Eject + Auto Off Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback. When you eject a disc, the unit will automatically power off (unless you switch sources before ejecting the disc).

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.

    iPhone/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Pioneer FH-X520UI's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The FH-X520UI supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Pioneer's Lightning-to-USB cable (130CDIU52, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the FH-X520UI.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Pioneer's dock connector-to-USB cable (130CDIU51, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the FH-X520UI.
Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

iPod Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 94dB. The Pioneer head unit supports audio playback of stored music, podcasts, audiobooks, and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. You can choose to operate your iPod/iPhone through the head unit's front-panel controls, from its clickwheel/touchscreen, or via a streamed app from your iPhone.

    • Head Unit Mode: From the head unit, you can browse your iPod/iPhone's music library by Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Playlist, Composer, Podcast, or Audiobook. Once you have selected a category, you can search each category alphabetically. In addition, the head unit offers Link Play, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Play lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, or an album list of the currently playing genre. You can also select Random & Repeat functions for a certain song or specific folder. The head unit will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music file information; including Track number, Elapsed playing time, and Song/Artist/Album name. Apple devices w/ iOS 6.0+ will stay unlocked, so you can access music apps; other iPod/iPhone device's clickwheel or touchscreen will be locked during this mode.
    • iPod Mode: In iPod mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen, while still being able to view song/artist information and control basic playback functions from the head unit. You will not be able to browse your iPod/iPhone's music by category from the head unit or use Link Play in this mode.
    • App Mode: App mode lets you listen to your favorite music apps from your iPhone (iOS 5.0+) through the Pioneer head unit and your vehicle's speakers. Once you have selected the music app from your iPhone, you'll be able to listen to music from that app through the Pioneer head unit, view song/artist information on the head unit's LCD, and operate basic playback functions such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track from the head unit's front-panel control. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode.

Auxiliary Input: The FH-X520UI is equipped with a front-panel 3.5mm stereo minijack auxiliary input for connecting external components, such as a portable MP3 player.

    AM/FM + Pandora Radio

Supertuner IIID AM/FM Tuner: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.

    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible AM/FM stations.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest stations under preset buttons 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 levels of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

Pandora App: The free Pandora App lets you play music from the Pandora music service through the Pioneer FH-X520UI using your connected Apple iPhone, via the Pioneer iPod connector cable (sold separately) or the connector cable that came with your iPhone. To access Pandora you must have an Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) with the latest version of the Pandora Radio application from Apple's iTunes App Store. Your iPhone will need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. You will also need a Pandora music service account. The Pioneer FH-X520UI will provide control over the Pandora music service and display Artist/Album/Song information.

    • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).
    • Shuffle Station List: You can listen to songs played randomly from various stations within your Station List.
    • New Stations + Delete: New stations can be created based on the current songs or artists playing. You can also delete a station from your Pandora station list.
    • Skip Songs: You can skip song tracks within a station. You cannot skip back to a previous song. Pandora limits the number of skips allowed.
    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.
    • Bookmarking: The song/artist currently being played can be bookmarked & stored in your Pandora account.

Note: Access to the Pandora service will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet. Pandora is not supported in Canada & only available in the United States.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The FH-X520UI is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power specifications for the FH-X520UI are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

4ch/2V Preouts: The Pioneer FH-X520UI features two pair of 2.0-volt preouts. The unit's Rear/SW preouts can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer outputs. When the head unit's RW/SW preouts are configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the low pass filter (50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 125 Hz), select the filter slope (-6/-12dB), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).

Equalizer: The Pioneer FH-X520UI features a Preset & Custom EQ. The built-in equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The two Custom modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80Hz, 250Hz, 800Hz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz) from +/-6dB. Custom 1 can be set separately for each source (except for USB/iPod/Pandora); while Custom 2 and the other 5 presets are shared settings used for all sources.

High-Pass Crossover: When you don't want low-frequency sound to be heard through your front or rear speakers, you can simply active the head unit's HPF (high pass filter). By activating the HPF, only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output from the front or rear speakers. The high pass filter crossover can be set to 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160hz, 200Hz or Off. The slope level of the HPF can also be adjusted to -6dB or 12dB.

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies

Audio Level Settings: The Pioneer FH-X520UI CD receiver offers a variety of audio settings to tailor the bass, treble, and volume level to your preference.

    • Bass Boost The FH-X520UI features a bass boost function which can be used to enhance low-frequency bass sound. The bass boost function can be set between 0-6.
    • Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.
    • Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.

MIXTRAX: Drawing from Pioneer's rich DJ heritage and passion for music, MIXTRAX delivers a unique DJ infused listening experience to listeners in the car. MIXTRAX is an innovative Pioneer technology that creates a non-stop mix of your music library complete with a range of DJ-inspired effects. MIXTRAX takes your typical music listening experience and creates a non-stop mix of your music with 9 random DJ effects and transitions, by removing the breaks and pauses normally introduced between tracks and replacing them with various beats. MIXTRAX is compatible with USB-connected iPhone, iPod, USB MSC device, and select Android devices. There is also a Short Playback option which limits the amount of time each track plays; select from 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, or 3 minutes.

Note: The MIXTRAX function does not work in App mode or with the Pandora App for iPod/iPhone, and is not supported by USB MTP devices. The Advanced Sound Retriever function is disabled when MIXTRAX is activated.

    Display Features

Two-Line Display: The two-line, multi-segmented LCD with LED backlight is 35% larger than previous models and offers improved visibility and legibility.

Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 5 preset colors (White/Red/Amber/Green/Blue), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red/Blue/Green brightness levels), or scan through a variety of colors.

Brightness Control: You can manually adjust the brightness (1-10) of the head unit's display to suit your viewing needs. You can also sync the receiver's illumination to the head units' clock or your vehicle's headlights. To dim the receiver's display automatically when the vehicle's headlights are turned on, you'll need to hardwire the orange/white wire of the head unit's harness to your vehicle's parking light circuit.

MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music. You can also choose which area's of the head unit's face illuminates; select Display, Display/Buttons, or Off.

Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can press the "DISP" button to turn off). When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the "DISP" button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On, you can choose to have the clock display during playback of each source.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On/Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The Pioneer FH-X520UI has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double -DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is also an optional double-DIN sleeve (130ADTV133, sold separately) available for this unit that will allow you to Euro-mount or custom mount the Pioneer head unit in  your vehicle. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The FH-X520UI comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause playback, skip music tracks, change display info, and adjust audio settings. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Not sure what you're asking. The head unit doesn't come with a wire harness that connects to your car specifically, that's separate, although Crutchfield usually supplies that if you buy from them. It does come with a wireless remote though. If you're asking if it comes with a harness so you can control the radio with existing controls in your steering wheel, the answer is no. You have to buy a separate kit for that. Hope this helps! [ James  Dec 26, 2015 ]
    No. [ Paul  Dec 26, 2015 ]
It comes with a remote wire, and a remote control unit. I believe there is an adapter you need to order to do any further remote control functions (volume and track control via steering wheel) [ Jason  Dec 26, 2015 ]
