Our take on the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS

Pioneer has equipped the AVH-X5500BHS DVD receiver with their largest screen plus an impressive set of features — features that improve not only the sound in your car, but your mobile experience too. Here are the highlights:

Big screen, big capabilities

Pioneer has equipped the AVH-X5500BHS DVD receiver with their largest screen plus an impressive set of features — features that improve not only the sound in your car, but your mobile experience too. Here are the highlights:

  • Advanced App Mode: You can launch and control compatible iPhone apps from the face of your receiver, putting a variety of music, navigation, social media, and other apps at your command. Pioneer's CD-201S cable is required (if you have an iPhone 5, you'll need a Pioneer cable kit ). You can learn more and see the latest compatible apps here.
  •  Built-in Bluetooth®: Enjoy hands-free calling with your compatible phone, plus the ability to wirelessly stream and control music from your phone or other Bluetooth devices.
  •  Built-in HD Radio™ tuner: You'll notice the impressive sonic advantages right away — FM broadcasts that are near-CD quality, with AM that's as good as what you're used to on FM. You can tune into multiple channels on the same frequency, for more entertainment choices. Plus, the iTunes® tagging feature lets you save song info, so you can purchase the tracks you like later.
  • Optional satellite radio: Add a SiriusXM tuner and subscription for nationwide access to programming you can't get anywhere else — coast-to-coast reception is a huge plus if you travel constantly. And you'll never have to worry about data charges or coverage.
  •  Advanced touchscreen controls: Touch Slide technology offers greater control of receiver functions. Want a new EQ curve? Just draw it on the screen with your finger and you've got it. And you can browse video files through thumbnail images — just touch them to check out a sneak preview.

Easy access to your media

You can connect your iPod or iPhone to this Pioneer's USB input and access your playlists with the receiver's controls, aided by tools like Alphabet Search and Link Search. You can also play music files from many Android™ phones when your Android is plugged into the front-panel USB port — see the "Details" tab for more info on device compatibility.

You can take charge of your Pandora® account from the touchscreen by connecting your iPhone to the receiver with Pioneer's CD-201S cable. Android users can enjoy the same functionality through a Bluetooth connection. And don't forget, you can also enjoy all your CDs, DVDs, discs full of MP3 or WMA music, and USB storage devices loaded with files.

AppRadioLIVE makes it easy

Pioneer's innovative AppRadioLIVE streamlines your app info and functions into one easy-to-use interface. You'll enjoy quick access to your music, media, calendar, and other sources you subscribe to, just by downloading the AppRadioLIVE app and syncing your services. AppRadioLIVE works with your apps to provide visual map guidance and access to points of interest, as well as the ability to search for concerts, shows, and other local events of interest. And you can show several sources of information simultaneously, quickly shifting from one to another with a touch of your finger.

MIXTRAX and awesome video performance

When you're ready to get the party started, Pioneer's exclusive MIXTRAX feature creates a DJ-like experience with content from your iPod®, iPhone®, or Android, adding cool effects between songs as variable-color lighting pulses with the beat of your music. You can also change the receiver's appearance to match your dash by choosing from five display colors and 112 key panel illumination options.

Hi-res screen

The receiver's 7" WVGA screen sports higher-resolution imaging capabilities than most mobile A/V receivers, so it plays DVDs and other video content with bright, clear detail when you're parked. You can keep your passengers entertained during long road trips by sending video from the receiver to a rear-seat screen.  You'll be able to view video content from your iPod or iPhone with the addition of Pioneer's CD-IU201S cable. If you have an iPhone 5, you'll need a Pioneer cable kit  to view video and access apps, along with a free firmware update from Pioneer. Here's a nice safety feature – you can plug a rear-view camera into this receiver and it will show you what's behind you when you shift into reverse.

A firmware update is available from Pioneer that will provide enhanced iPhone 5 compatibility to enable AppRadio Mode. However, due to an unforeseen communication error with the Pandora Internet radio app, audio playback and display of metadata from Pandora are disrupted. If you use Pandora and don't intend to use AppRadio Mode at this time, please do not install this update. Pioneer is working on an update to allow for both Pandora and AppRadio Mode, to be released at a future date.

Tune the sound to your taste

This Pioneer sports an 8-band equalizer for making your music sound perfect in your car, and you'll find an auto-equalization feature to tune your system (microphone required). Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever perks up the flat sound of compressed music by restoring high-frequency information.  If you're looking to build a killer system, three pairs of 4-volt preamp outputs make it easier to connect external amplifiers

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

    Amateurish UI and missed opportunities

Anonymous from East Coast on 6/9/2014

    2011 Nissan Altima
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is last year's model, but the software interface and hardware is very similar to the 2014 model. I've been using it for 5 months, so I have a good sense of the UI problems. Overall, the hardware is good. The resistive touchscreen is responsive but some of the on-screen animations are choppy. But it's tolerable. The screen resolution is adequate for a HU and connectivity is very good. Bluetooth is solid and it syncs quickly. However, it's the software that needs refining. The UI is amateurish. The backgrounds, animations, and color choices are unpolished and gimmicky. The font size while using a flash drive is larger than the font used with Sirius. And the on-screen list of song title, artist, etc. is out of order compared to Sirius, it should be consistent. When muted, the mute icon overlaps the preset buttons. The X box, used to close windows, is offset from the main window, a graphical mistake. When using Sirius, there is a big empty space to the right where they could have the channel logo. The FM signal maxes out with 4 bars but the satellite signal maxes out with three bars (it's not a reception problem). The on-screen phone features, are on the right side, away from the driver. Voice control is clearly half-baked. When using a flash drive, the HU doesn't recognize playlists. If I knew that, I wouldn't have purchased the HU. I wish Pioneer would clean up the interface, until then I wouldn't recommend buying the AVH series.

    Pros: Solid hardware, great connectivity

Cons: UI is unpolished, doesn't read playlists

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got this for my new 2012 honda civic ex. Haven't had a newer car in a long time, so i wanted something nice. I'm in my 40's now and used to be a car audio nut! i love this head unit does everything i want and more. install was a breeze took all of about 45 min. with the supplied kits and diagram on how to take your dash apart. I remember when you had to just figure it out ! The extra power really "woke "up the factory speakers too ! Pioneer has always been my first choice in head units and i tried them all!

    Pros: It's a pioneer!

Cons: You are looking at reviews ,so obviously you don't have one....get it now!

    Awesome Aftermarket Radio!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this radio in My 2004 Audi S4. I should have changed out my Factory head unit Years Ago. When I look at this radio installed in my car it looks like it came from the factory. That's a big plus for me.

Pros: This radio is awesome! So many more features then my factory head unit. Fitment is great. This is a great addition to any vehicle while still maintaining the factory look without ant cutting or modifications of the dash board.

Cons: The only I would have is the Low power fro the head Unit. But I guess Most people who change out the HU would also add an amplifier.

I really like this unit. This is the second Pioneer HU I have gotten and I really like it. I got it because the interface looks the best (classiest) in my opinion (others look cheesy to me) and because of all its features. I only wish it had a knob for the volume instead of buttons, but it seems like everyone uses buttons now instead of a knob which is annoying.

Pros: stylish easy to navigate looks good sounds great

Cons: buttons instead of knob for volume

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first Pioneer I have bought, while I intended to purchase an Alpine radio the Pioneer caught my attention with its overall good reviews and $100 off promo. I have to say for the money this radio is A+ very easy to use, upgradable with navigation, secondary screens or a rear view camera, makes it seem like there are endless options in order personalize its use. One thing I can't wait to try is the Dashcommand app for my ipod touch. Just purchase the Obdlink lx (or one of your choosing from their list) and connect it to your iphone or touch and you can setup any number of gauges or stats to view on your radio. Very cool!

Pros: Many adjustable features tons of add-ons easy to connect to bluetooth and will remember multiple devices

Cons: limited applications for use with iphone and Andriod unless you root your phon Can't purchase the Andriod cable kit anymore

    My first Pioneer

JasonW from Horicon, WI on 1/19/2014

This was my first Pioneer head unit ever. I have had several Alpine and a Clarian unit prior. Since it was also my first DVD unit I have nothing to compare directly for its features. The units HD radio is nice but where I live is right on the boarder so it has a tendancy to switch back and forth out of HD, not the units fault but can be annoying. I wish I could have outputed video and sound to my rear headrests as an option since I have blue tooth head phones for them. I would have also like to then be able to multitask with another function such as radio or other functions seperately. I dont think any unit would do that but that would make it awesome and fully meet my needs. Touchscreen is pretty good but the radio preset buttons are too small. At times the screen locks up. Can't sync a bluetooth phone after startup. Small thing but would be nice. Seek function is clunky and over all reception is not as good as stock head unit. Clock is very easy to set. Overall for most people I think it is a solid performer, however in the back of my head I think I should have bought an Alpine unit.

Pros: Touchscreen, Screen size, graphic eq,

Cons: No bluetooth sync once past startup. Radio seek. HD radio reception, Lack of multitasking function.

    2007 Ford Mustang
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the avh-x5500bhs as a gift for my wife for Christmas. She has a 2007 Mustang GT500 Convertible and her factory radio, the Shaker 1000 system, the 6 disc in-dash CD had stopped working. The unit was delivered along with install kit, 2 harness plugs, antenna adapter, and the speaker pop eliminator. I also purchased the all the other items for the iphone5 online, as well as a back up camera. I Installed everything, uploaded my own custom screen logo through the usb, and was done. This unit looks so sexy good in the mustang. NOW. In order for the iphone 5 to work, you need to do 3 updates I believe. You will need 3 separate USB memory sticks to do this, I wish Pioneer would just include them, but you can get them for less than $5 each now at most stores. Other that that, my wife loves the unit, the personal color settings, the custom logo, the HD radio, and the back up camera since she sucks at driving and especially backing up. Watch product review videos and even look on YouTube at demos and reviews, very helpful.

Pros: Cost. Function. Sound. Personalization. Iphone5 capable.

Cons: All the items needed to buy to make it iphone5 compatable, lightning to USB, VGA adapter, the pioneer box, roughly $200 worth of stuff. ALSO. The updates needed for iphone5, why not include 3 USB memory sticks with the unit if you need them. In their own videos they have them with the pioneer logo on them. I own my own sales business, so I understand how much that extra $5 free item really means to a customer, saves them time from driving to buy it, saves them money, and saves thought.

    Is a good unit

Craig from Conowingo, MD on 1/9/2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Seems like a good unit. I have had it for about 3 months now. Installed it myself in a couple of hours. I am a simple man and only really bought it for the hands free phone option since Maryland gives tickets for using your phone while driving now. I have a droid and seems to work good with it. Overall I love the unit but the only minor complaints are that it seems to constantly switch from analog to digital radio. I assume its the radio stations problem, not the radio. It can be put on analog only but I like the benefit of digital. I wish the equalizer could be set for analog and set differently for digital so that when it changed from one to another the equalizer could compensate some for the change in sound. The other complaint would be that the buttons on the screen are right on the edge of the unit and if you have big fingers it can be tricky hitting the right button. overall though, I am happy. Got a very good deal on it. looks good in the dash

Pros: Value, looks, colors of face, sound quality, ease of installation

Cons: Can't set equalizer separately for analog and digital. buttons on screen too close to edge of unit

I have had this unit in for about 2 weeks and I am very pleased. I did not see it in person anywhere before buying so I didn't really know what to expect. I was a little worried about the connection to my Android phone but it worked great. The Pandora app works so that I don't have to mess with the phone at all. The bluetooth phone part works great too. I have the mike mounted on the ceiling by the lights and according to my wife it works great.

Pros: Works with Android. Bluetooth phone.

Nice Deck - Bluetooth chip Failed during First Week

wwboy from Walla Walla, WA on 12/15/2013

    2012 Honda Civic EX
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think (hope?) this is a solid deck. After having it installed for just over a week, the bluetooth chip failed (got the Error-10 code). I had done nothing to incite this failure save use the deck normally. Just one day the bluetooth no longer worked. I'll be pretty frustrated if this happens with the replacement deck after it runs out of warranty (Thanks Crutchfield btw for such a speedy and easy replacement of the defective deck). As a whole however - I like it. I think the display is a little busy with icons and the like -- but it works fine. Sound quality is much much better than stock deck (and four replacement Pioneer speakers swapped out for OEM) but that's no surprise. Microphone quality is very good. USB cable with iphone 5s works well for sound only. One annoyance is that when I plug in my phone, it immediately begins playing music -- all the music -- shuffling one song at a time randomly. Pretty annoying. Bluetooth audio works well except you can't control pandora from the head unit while playing through bluetooth -- only through the phone. So far so good -- not terribly impressed and kinda keeping my fingers crossed that it stays functional for a good long time.

Pros: Big Screen; nice quality. Looks cool. Versatile if you buy the right adapters

Cons: Pioneer questionable engineering -- lots of people are experiencing the same failure (search online - this deck is apparently having many issues); Some weird quirky things that make it difficult to use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee instal with IPhone 5 IOS7 nice unit with plenty of features. pretty simple to use. bluetooth works great, sound quality is very good and no complaints on the other end. HD Radio in metro Detroit area is great. plenty of stations to choose from and are nice and clear. best part for me is the CBS Radio Network station in HD because at night the AM alternative is non existent. Now I get to listen all of the Red Wings games and Sunday night football without a hint of static. Pandora and IPod control are a nice feature. The Iphone needs to be connected with a wire in order to control the music from the head unit. Bluetooth wireless streaming can also be used with this, but you have to control the music from the phone, I believe this is also true for Android users.

Upgrading from a single din Kenwood unit was very simple and only took 2 hours. The dash panel had to have some minor plastic removal, made quick & easy with a Dremel and a cut-off wheel. It fits perfect, and really looks nice, Not Cheezy or cheap looking. The wiring is very easy to manage. I played with alot of the features and they all seem to work great. Hooked up my Iphone 4s and it was great. One thing worth a mention, The USB cable, and the RGB connector are on the back of the unit. You will not be able to reach back and plug them in. If you plan on using these features which you will need with an Iphone, I suggest you install them and route the cables down below the dash. then mount the radio. The only negative I can see, and there merely cosmetic, is the USB and the CD-IU201S interface cable, there fairly long, and they will be a nusiance, unsightly and possible in the way of some things in your car. Other than that This Pioneer is a Winner.

Pros: Easy to install, Great looking, Loaded with cool features

Cons: The optional Iphone & usb accessory cables hanging down are a pain, You'll have to get creative.

This car stereo system was more than I expected. Wanted to upgrade to new technology with Bluetooth capability since the original stereo in my 2004 Toyota 4Runner had a CD, tape player, and radio tuner only, this system blows it away and didn't realize it has a built in sound mixer called MIXTRAX, the sound quality is outstanding, has a full equalizer with custom setting control, easy to use and has a very sleek display.

Pros: Bluetooth integration with mobile devices Built-in equalizer with custom controls MIXTRAX original technology for creating non-stop selections from your audio library Mounting bracket compatibility Remote control

This is the second Pioneer I have installed and purchased. First Mom's car and now My car. I didn't realize I was missing out on so many features. The HD Radio is included so no need to purchase additional accessories. I also installed a Clarion CC510 rear view camera , steering wheel adapter and the xmsirus tuner since I had everything open. The Tuner installation was simple plug and play. I wasn't impressed with Satellite radio , but then again I am more into music. Maybe if you like talk shows and comedy. This service may be fore you. I'm sure they will adjust there price structure once Pandora, and other similar apps gain momentum. The Satellite played for about 5 days for free. I would only subscribe to this service if my communicate was extremely long.. Your better off using Pandora or some other smartphone app that streams to your tuner for free. You can also add a map module. Wow that high :-) One thing I wish pioneer would work on is an app you can use with your android or iphone that would allow you to Bluetooth google maps to the 7inch touch screen. I guest that is what there app radio is for lol Paying for a map module is just not worth it in my opinon. YOur better off just buying a separate Gps you can use in any car. Overall great tuner with room to expand your audio system.

Pros: 7inch screen, Equalizer ,Adjusting Angle of Screen, easy to use , Mixtrax feature, Color Customization, and can adjust Camera color, contrast, brightness etc.

Cons: In Bright sun you can barely see the screen. I guest that is with all touch screen

Pros: Built in HD radio. Huge value for the price especially with an additional $25 off coupon. Great display. Easy to use basic listening options i.e. cd, radio, ipod.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I almost never write reviews, but had to for this Pioneer b/c I have been so impressed. I was looking for a replacement stereo for my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder that had: 1) Hands free bluetooth with GREAT quality, 2) Pandora capability, 3) iPOD connection, 4) ability to integrate with an Android phone, 5) satellite radio capability, 6) RELIABLE and affordable. I also didn't want the flashiest/sexiest system out there (I'm in my mid thirties and those days are long gone), but something that is solid and looks "clean." This system exceeded all of my expectations. Sound quality is amazing, bluetooth is perfect and most say that it is clearer than if I was just speaking directly into the phone, Pandora is flawless with my phone, no issues with iPOD, and satellite radio and navigation options are nice (but don't currently have that set up yet). Installation was also easy and straightforward. Can't say enough good things about this unit and highly recommend it. I also thought the tilt screen option was going to be just a gimmick, but found that the ability to tilt the screen up provides a much better viewing angle and is quite nice!

Pros: Hands free Bluetooth quality, sound quality, "Clean" simple design with beautiful and responsive touch screen, Pandora option works well with Android, simple and easy iPOD connection

Cons: none after approx 2 months of use

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in a 2008 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited. I also included the XM Radio, integrated steering wheel control, and the PAC TATO OEM Amp wiring harness. The sound is 10 fold better than the OEM JBL radio. Everything just works. Paired with iPhone 5, sync'd contacts, bluetooth streaming works great. XM Radio activated on it's own. I also used the OEM Metal brackets, removed from the stock head unit, so the new HU is physically screwed into the vehicle. The dash in my truck looks like it's missing something. The OEM Stereo took up the width of the trim panel and now there is only a 7" touch screen with no button or volume knobs. If there was a 8 or 9 inch screen I would have chosen for that option just to take up more space in the dash. I will get use to it.

Pros: Sound is amazing when integrated with the OEM Amp compared to stock stereo Bluetooth streaming Sync'd contacts Direct dial from head Unit Direct XM Radio Station Tuning (No more sculling up to the find the channel) Custom Color changing, background graphics 4 Volt for output (highly recommended for OEM Amp and Steering wheel integration)

Cons: Display is real busy (a lot going on) Small volume buttons on the stereo Touch screen buttons seem to be small or I have fat fingers. Finger prints on screen

This receiver is built well and does a lot. Installing the SiriusXM antenna and tuner is very easy. Wiring the product is very easy, and the display looks really cool. It has a full face EQ so adjusting the sound is very good. Sounds great even with factory speakers.

Pros: Great sound, easy installation. SiriusXM sounds great, HD Radio, Pandora through blutooth and DVD Video as long as you install the ground.

Cons: Overall great unit. HD Radio tends to just pick up localized stations or no signal at all, even in a large city like Chicago. Don't know if you might need an antenna booster for the HD. Doesn't work when you try to connect an IPad, only works with Ipod, android and Iphone.

was hesitant to replace the factory head unit on my 8th gen accord because i thought the kit was ugly but after testing a better signal on my amp i ditched the line out converter and bought this bad boy. quality is phenomenal, much better than my factory head unit and "high quality" line out converter. plenty of eq setting to adjust the sound according to your taste. bluetooth works very well with my htc one running 4.3(including controling pandora thru the head unit). included mic works very well for calls just make sure not to block the mic holes in the back(no flush mount) as they help with noise cancellation. Has a setting that adjust volume according to seating position whether it is driver or passenger. when set to the drivers/left side it created the perfect sound stage, as if the speakers were directly in front of me.

Pros: great quality, lots of features, easy install.

Cons: screen not the quality i was expecting, still better than others ive seen but certainly not high def.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok first off, this is a very good stereo. Read the reviews and you can see that. I want to focus on what I could not really find in reviews...How does it work with Android? I almost upgraded to the 8500 because it states that it works with Android specifically, but this radio does not say specifically just bluetooth. So here is my two cents for those of you, like me with Android phones and questions. There is no direct connect capability to this stereo with an Android phone. HOWEVER... for a bluetooth connection, you get phone capability, downloads your phone book onto the radio, and yes you can stream Pandora through bluetooth and yes you can use the Pandora function on the radio (which means you can scan your stations, skip songs on the radio face, thumbs up/down, bookmark). This was huge to me as 99% of my music comes from Pandora and not having the apparent magical iPhone was a concern. But fear not it works and does exactly what I hoped for. I am glad I didn't upgrade as the AppRadio for Pioneer is not very good. Period. There is an app out there that will allow you to mirror your Android for the 8500 but you have to root your phone for this and I wasn't willing to go through all that. Video playback via DVD is awesome and if you get the bypass, makes it even better! So if you have an Android phone and are thinking about this radio, wonder no more! Get the radio! There are some issues with connectivity to bluetooth but nothing that is a deal breaker, just an annoyance.

Pros: Beautiful display Ease of use Improved sound over factory Customizable EQ Works with Andriod Streaming bluetooth audio/Pandora

Cons: Sometimes has trouble connecting to bluetooth or takes a little while to sink up Pandora does not always work from the start which I have figured out a way to get it to work so really more anoying than a problem

I purchased the Pioneer AVH x5500 and its easily the best head unit I've owned. Its priced cheaper than Kenwood and other compatible models. The interface is really beautiful and fun to use, with moving backgrounds and DJ Mixtrax mode. The motorized faceplate is solid and adjusts to your viewing angle. It features HD radio which I really like cause it makes radio sound like its coming from a CD. The EQ settings are great allowing me to fully customize my crossovers to provide the best sound. Plenty of RCA outputs for my subwoofers and aftermarket amps and speakers. I get compliments every time some one gets in my car..I highly recommend the Pioneer AVH-series whether its the 4500, 5500, 8500 or 2500!!

Good HU when you can see it.

Brandon from Atlanta, GA on 5/14/2013

The radio has some nice features and the 4v outputs are a plus. I have a few gripes about it. The ipod playback is decent, except it takes a while to load the songs on my small 8gb nano. Every time I access the list of song, its brings up the loading animation. I've used OEM units that were far faster with the same nano. But that is a small problem. My main issue which is so bad I'm probably going to have to return the unit is the screen. I can't see anything during the daytime when the sun is shinning. I live in Atlanta and that's quite often during my commute. The screen just washes out. I've tried all the settings and the best I've been able to manage is with the Brightness and Contrast maxed out. Makes is usable, but once I put sunglasses its even harder to see. Again, this is a problem I did not have with previous OEM touch screen units. At night, the screen is great, but that's not enough for me.

Pros: Great features, good sound quality, lots of visual options.

Cons: Horrible visibility in the daytime when the sun is shinning. Ipod connection is slow

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this after MUCH research and I'm pretty thrilled with it. I have basically only owned Sony and Kenwood over the years but I have to admit, this is a very nice stereo for the money. Very easy to install even though I was kind of scared to do it because I didn't want to mess up my interior. I have it doing everything it can do, so i've tested everything. The only thing that drives me crazy is that every time I plug my phone in, the stereo defaults to my ipod...even if I'm on my phone. That can probably be changed in the settings, I just haven't figured it out yet. I paid $$ for the advanced App radio cable and to be honest, I'm not sure I would do that again. It's really cool but I don't know if I'll use it that much. In retrospect, I probably would have bought the cable for $ and tried it out first. Other than that, it's a KILLER product. Crutchfield was GREAT and I will start buying everything from them from now on. I'm very pleased with the service.

Pros: Sound quality, EQ, apps...pretty much everything.

Cons: Plays my ipod as soon as I plug my phone in regardless of what I'm doing. The advanced app radio cable is too much $$$ for what you get out of it.

Just had my Pioneer system installed since my factory Acura Bose system locked up on me and it was way too expensive to repair it. So I bought this system. I am loving it already, pretty easy to use and set up once you go thru the menu. Read some reviews on the screen being hard to see but I have tint on my car so the sun is not even an issue for me and I live in Florida. I have the IPHONE with Sirius XM on my phone and love the bluetooth capability. I dont even need to hook up to my USB cable in my arm console to play my XM from my phone. They hooked up my bose factory subwoofer as well so it sounds real good with the new system. The only thing I am trying to figure out now is how to get the DVD player to display a picture I get sound but no picture. I know the emergency brake has to be engaged which I have done but still no picture. Anyone have the same issue when they got theirs installed? I probably won't use it much anyway but would nice to have working if I wanted to roll over to the beach and watch a movie with my woman. Drive in style......LOL

Pros: Price, Easy to use, sound

Cons: A lot of settings or controls to go through

    Matt from Philadelphia on 5/8/2013

I wanted to add something to my previous review. If you want to be able to cycle through the different modes and play music while running the GPS drive app or similar apps look at page 23 in the manual (setting the app sound mixing). Make sure app sound mixing is not set to off. When you are in the GPS drive app you can then hit the source button and select from the different music sources. If app sound mixing is set to off hitting the source button on the radio while in app mode will do nothing. You don't have to travel in silence. Hope this helps someone.

Folks with brightness issues need to read page 38 of manual (also, put parking brake on). That was a source of frustration but it's very customizable for both day & night settings. Those with subwoofer level issues didn't read the manual either. The loudness feature also works well to get more juice at lower volume levels. I'm using the GPS Drive app and it'll cost you $25 to have touch integration. The app gives you the ability to play music on your iPhone. If you want to listen to Pandora, iHeart, or other music from iPhone app, start the app 1st in Bluetooth mode then start the Nav service. Don't use the appradio app. Unfortunately, if you switch from app mode to iPod/USB/Bluetooth, etc mode, the music pauses and will again when you go back to nav. I try to use the phone to control the music but switching back and forth messes things up. When using appradio app, I don't think you can play iHeart and use GPS Drive at same time. Overall, use the phone as much as possible and have apps launched b4 connecting. It's buggy but if you perfect the sequence it might be bearable. I've had it for 3 weeks and drove from NJ to Miami. I'll probably get the Pioneer Nav unit if it's able to play background music in the background.

This receiver is very much up to date with touchscreen, customizable background etc. It is very easy to follow and the instructions they give are actually written in understandable english. I have not tried the appradio yet but am highly disappointed that it cannot sync with android. In today's day and age pioneer as to be able to use same wires that it uses for apple products and just switch endings to micro usb. There are receivers which sync with android but they are expensive and few exist. The equalizer is easy to use, however quality of radio kinda sucks compared to old oem radio, but it did boost the max volume of my speakers thou. A big issue with this radio is that it does not have a control to adjust sub woofer boost. There are single dim receivers that can to do but this radio cannot. All in all it is a good product for the money, just wish for a relatively new product it was more in sync with modern gadgets.

Love this unit! Really impressed with the touchscreen quality and ease of use. I am not an iPhone user so can't comment on the AppRadio features, but Pandora via Bluetooth + phone controls couldn't be better. I honestly couldn't go back to a non-touchscreen after using this. Install was easy as could be with no issues, the unit itself is nice and solidly built.

Pros: Easy to operate. Sound quality blows away the factory radio (custom EQ!). Easy to install. Great screen quality.

Cons: Touchscreen does attract fingerprints (easily wiped with dry cloth).

Not what I expected, poor value

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a decent head unit, but it definitely has it's flaws. If I paid $250-$300 for this head unit I would give it a 5 out of 5, but for this price I expected much more. Firstly, the FM reception is beyond bad. I thought the antenna slipped out of place or something at first, so I completely removed the head unit only to find that it was still firmly in place. I live in Baltimore and commute to DC, I can only get Baltimore stations around Baltimore and DC stations around DC, whereas with the stock head unit I could get both sets of stations in either area. Very disappointed in that. Secondly, the screen is not very bright at all. It's amazing I can buy a Kindle Fire HD and the screen is 10x better than this screen. In the sunlight it's hard to see it and is prone to smudges/fingerprints that make it look even worse. Unacceptable. Reminds me of touch screen technology from 2005. Even at night it doesn't look that great, the stock display in my wife's Toyota Sienna looks substantially better. I would return this head unit if it was an easy process to remove it.

Pros: Great power for stock or aftermarket speakers, easy set up. Bluetooth phone function works very well.

Cons: Terrible FM reception. Screen resolution/brightness subpar. No easily accessible screen brightness switch. Overpriced for what you are getting.

I installed this on a 2008 Tacoma. I have never installed a radio before let alone mess with electrical wires. Super easy to do. It worked first time I powered it on. It also sync's very quick with my Android (Samsung GS3). I would suggest holding onto the factory clips as the new one's really don't seem to hold the new deck kit as well. Head Unit wise, this is well worth the money. It really made my stock speakers come to life.

    Pros: Everything

    Cons: Nothing

    Well worth it!

I installed this receiver in my 2005 Lincoln Navigator with the ASWC-1 steering wheel control adapter, SirrusXM, rear view camera, 12 to 5v step down. The system works flawlessly and everything integrates together perfectly. I'm going to upgrade the factory speakers and amp as well, but the OEM's do sound much better with this receiver. The system is user friendly, easy to use, and is laid out well. My Iphone 5 adapter/connector hasn't arrived yet but I have connected via Bluetooth (Very simple process BTW) so I can't comment on the app integration but everything else works well. I really like the ability to stream Pandora, Iheart and itunes via the Bluetooth connection. I would recommend this product and I very rarely recommend anything.

Pros: Price Functionality Versatility Ease of use

Cons: 22 Gauge Wire Boot up time about 5 to 10 seconds (Seems long to me)

Installed in a 2010 Nissan Altima coupe. Installation was flawless given all needed parts supplied by Crutchfield. The interface is blazing fast and it paired perfectly to my iPhone 4S. As far as sound goes, it gives you a tremendous amount of fine tuning for your sound. I am using this with Boston SR-60's in the front and Alpine SPR-69 in the rear deck, all powered with an Alpine power pack. All the features work at a premium level for my expectations. I'm a very happy customer!

Pros: Interface, sound quality, build quality, ease of use

Cons: None as of yet :)

I installed the Pioneer AVH X5500BHS in a 2012 Toyota Tacoma. I installed this initially with just the stock speakers to determine how much of an upgrade it is...WOW... This unit is impressive. It made my stock paper speakers sing and cleaned up the muddy sound that came from the stock unit. It was a breeze to install utilizing the added crutchfield adapters. once installed with the ASWC-1 steering wheel interface all functions worked great. The sound is incredible and is very user friendly. I was able to pair with a Samsung S3 and my Iphone 4s without any issues. This is a great product and would highly recommend to anyone who is looking at a new head unit!!

Unit does not display map guidance from the resident map program on your Iphone if your are running IOS6, simply your current location. This requires you to buy a third party NAV app and pay extra for touchscreen access, or use Waze. Another big drawback is that when you run a NAV app or other non-music app, it immediately cuts out the radio (or sound) so you travel in silence. Unexpected for the price.

    Pros: High quality

Cons: Serious map and app issues

Purchased to replace stock HU in 2011 F350. Good fit and easy installation. Using a Maestro RR for steering wheel control. Unfortunately the RR does not retain Sync when used with a Pioneer HU, only Kenwood, contrary to what the Crutchfield advisor quoted. The 5500 is very straight forward to use, simple concise menus, and very adjustable sound output. A bit disappointed in the lack of screen intensity adjustment (light/dark/contrast) for the main screen compared to the 4400. The dimming function works alright for night driving put could be darker, or at least able to be adjusted. The user/installation is useful on the install side but the "how to use" side is lacking. There are quite a few features that aren't readily explained in the book that take a bit little to figure out. Had to look at a few of the videos on Pioneer's website. Sound output is great and adjustable. Playback from Pandora is quite a bit quieter than Radio or USB/iPod. Knocked the value down one because of alot of features that aren't usable where I am but needed other features only offered in this unit or the next one up. Works well with my Android phone and iPod interface works well. Over all a good unit and does what I wanted.

Pros: Easy install, easy setup, good sound control.

Cons: Lack of main screen illumination adjustability. Lacking user instructions.

I bought the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS recently and installed it myself. Much like some other folks here I have been paying attention to the App Radio scene and looking for a car stereo that was feature rich but also would integrate easily with my mobile phone Some of the key features I was looking for included (in no specific order): - Smart phone integration - AppRadio - Bluetooth for phone - Bluetooth streaming - Sirius XM integration - (rear facing) Camera support - HD Radio - Touchscreen - USB connection - AUX connection Overall I am satisfied with my purchase. The UI is nice enough and didn't take long to figure without reading the manual. I did the install myself without having done any stereo installations myself in over 15 years. The installation went well except for a few minor delays: - Crutchfield includes extra packaging to install the unit in my Nissan. Most of the pieces were not needed. A quick call to their tech support (thanks Devin) helped me to figure it out what parts were necessary and what could be tossed. - Despite all of the cables and adapters included I was missing an antenna adapter. I had to purchase this piece separately. - I also purchased some crimp caps since some wiring was required. It would be nice if a custom cable/adapter was included too so this step could be skipped. At this time I haven't installed the read facing camera but I plan to do that in the coming weeks. I'll update my review at that time.

    Pros: Feature Rich

Cons: Pricey but nothing else at this price point with same features.

    I love the Pioneer x5500bhs.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered the Pioneer avh-x5500bhs the first day it was in stock and surprisingly it was at my house the very next day with normal shipping. I installed it myself with the help of the Crutchfield instructions and the Pioneer manual. The sound on this unit is phenomonal in comparison to the old stock unit in my 2007 4runner. I was going to replace the stock speakers but I will hold off for now since this unit made such a huge difference in the quality of the sound. The eq in this system is also great and allowed me to fine tune my music either via the presets or the two custom settings selections. The bluetooth music streaming is excellent and I can actually walk outside and behind my suv and it will still play clearly. The other cool feature is when I leave my car with my phone connected it will pause and reconnect when I get back in and start playing. I timed how long it takes to connect and play and it was 3 to 4 seconds. The handsfree calling is also great. I ran the mic to the top of my steering column and my friends and family told me they could not even tell I was using the mic. The screen is nice and vibrant but you need to adjust the picture dimmer and brightness settings so it will be viewable during the brightest part of the day. I have no problem seeing it with the adjustments even when the sun is directly on the screen. I removed a star for ease of use and build quality because I think app mode could be slightly easier to use. I highly recommend it!

Pros: Vibrant screen, excellent sound and loaded with features. Pioneer is releasing a new cable that makes this unit compatible with the iphone 5 for app mode and they are also releasing a firmware update in spring.

Cons: App radio mode could be a little smoother in my opinion. The one problem I had was no am reception and limited fm reception. I called Crutchfield and they told me to hook the blue antenna wire to the remote amp turn on wire on the unit. It didn't work because the booster was drawing to much power so instead I connected the antenna wire to the switched (ignition) power source and all is good. Just wanted to let everyone know in case you had a similar problem

    2009 Mazda 3
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, this is a very nice unit that sounds great, is responsive, and has a lot of features. My biggest complaint is that Pioneer has a substantial error in the user manual -- at page 46 it plainly indicates that the AVIC-U220 add-on GPS unit can be used with this head unit. After ordering the AVIC-U220, connecting as illustrated in the manual, and running the antennae to the deck below my rear window, it was not recognized by the head unit. After removing my dash multiple times, connecting/reconnecting cables, attempting to upgrade the firmware on the GPS unit, and repeated calls to Pioneer, I was informed by reps at Pioneer that the AVIC-U220 is not compatible with the AVH-X5500BHS head unit, and that page 46 of the manual was a "typo." This meant I had to once again rip out the interior of my car to remove the cabling and antannae line (still trying to figure out how best to remove the adhesive metal pad that the gps antennae attaches to). I am not particularly pleased by this oversight on the part of Pioneer. (Note: the Pioneer rep indicated that a new GPS add-on is expected to be announced at E3 in January, 2013, with model no. AVIC-U250). Another complaint is that although the bluetooth call quality on both ends is excellent, making outgoing calls could be easier. For example, I have not been able to identifiy any sort of voice command to dial numbers and the touch interface can be distracting while driving.

Pros: Great sound; HD radio works well; responsive interface; lots of features

Cons: Bluetooth dialing could be easier; typo in manual regarding compatability with AVIC-U220 GPS add-on

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok I have been watching the Appradio scene for some time now and was not sure that I wanted to purchase due to the mix reviews of the product. I was looking for a radio that was very flexible with regards to entertainment. I wanted the ability to use navigation on the head unit but did not want to be stuck with only one navigation service or provider. This radio meets my needs its not Alpine but it is easy to use and allows me greater flexibility. Its not perfect but it works....well actually mine died today after 7 days, Crutchfield is great and sent me a replacement. There are a few things that I would change or improve such as; I would provide a way to star rate songs on the iPod so that it can update iTunes, get ride of the screen clutter ( I dont need dancing lights), provide solid background screen colors, Pandora app access while in app mode, the iPhone patch cable needs to be more flexible, two USB connections (I like to store a library of songs on a separate USB rather than my phone), the endless questions and responses....... do I need to say more?

    Pros: Entertainment flexibility

Cons: the screen is busy and even with all the color variations I am unable to match the interior dash lights. Works but not perfect, I am hopeful that Pioneer will make software updates available as they improve the system rather than force an upgrade just to improve the user interface.

    very satisfied!

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS is equipped with built-in Bluetooth ver. 3.0 (powered by Parrot), allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP (Object Push Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the AVH-X5500BHS without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. Up to 3 Bluetooth-compatible devices can be registered to this head unit. Only one device can be used at a time.

Hands-Free Communication: The AVH-X5500BHS supports wireless hands-free communication (HFP/HSP/OPP/PBAB) for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The head unit will display the caller's information and an audible ring tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker during an incoming call. You can manually answer an incoming call or have the unit automatically answer the call. The AVH-X5500BHS allows you to carry on a phone conversation from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone using the head unit's external microphone and your car audio speakers. During a conversation you can adjust the volume, as well as switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode. Using the AVH-X5500BHS, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:

    • Entering a Phone Number: You can make a call by entering the phone number using the head unit's on-screen keypad (0-9, *, #, +, C).
    • Speed (Preset) Dialing: You can easily store up to six phone numbers as presets for speed dialing.
    • Phone Book: The phone book in your Bluetooth enabled cellular phone will be transferred automatically when the phone is paired to this unit. After finding the number you want to call in the phone book, you can select the entry and make the call. If a lot of numbers are registered in the phone book, you can search for the phone number by alphabet search mode.
    • Call Log: The 80 most recent calls dialed, received, and missed are stored in memory. You can browse them and call numbers from these lists.
    • Voice Control: If your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone is equipped with the voice control feature, you can use voice commands to make calls.
Note: Advanced phone operations that require attention, such as dialing numbers on the monitor or adjusting Bluetooth settings, are prohibited while driving. The vehicle's parking brake must be engaged to access these functions.

External Microphone: During your wireless phone call, you can talk into the head unit's included external microphone, and listen to the other party through the vehicle's speaker system. The external microphone provides better performance in noisy environments than the integrated microphone found on the front-panel of many aftermarket or factory radios. The microphone features a 13' cord that plugs into the back of the radio, and comes with an adjustable visor-mount clip. The microphone measures 0.475" (diameter) x 1.445" (depth). The unit is not equipped with an integrated microphone. The external microphone must be installed for Bluetooth hands-free communication.

Wireless Audio Streaming (with Meta Data Display): The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. HD+Pandora+SiriusXM Radio

HD Radio: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS's built-in HD Radio tuner lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music.  HD Radio is the system for digital AM and FM broadcasting in the U.S. More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multicasting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free. The unit's tuner also supports analog AM/FM broadcasts. Go to to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

    • Multicasting: In addition to conventional broadcasts, with HD Radio broadcasting it is possible to choose from up to 3 multicast programs (HD1 to HD3, and analog). There are also data programs for each program.
    • RDS: The Radio Data System (RDS) feature displays radio broadcast information such as artist, title, and album when listening to compatible analog or HD AM/FM stations.
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from a HD Radio or RDS FM broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store.
    • Supertuner IIID: The Supertuner IIID features Feed Forward Control, which avoids multi-path interference. This pre-detection of interference enables quick filter control and results in less distortion. In addition, the Supertuner IIID creates enhanced stereo during multi-path interference, unlike conventional tuners that collapse to mono. Digital processing reduces distortion, and improves Signal-to-Noise Ratio and stereo separation. Advanced analog technology improves signal processing sensitivity.
    • Reception Blending: If a digital broadcast reception condition gets poor, this unit automatically switches to the analog broadcast of the same frequency level. If this function is set to "On", the tuner switches between digital broadcast and analog broadcast automatically. If this function is 'Off', reception will be conducted within an analog broadcast.
    • BSM (Best Stations Memory): The BSM (Best Stations Memory) function lets you automatically store the six strongest analog or HD stations under presets 1-6 of the currently tuned band. The tuner has 3 FM banks and 1 AM bank. You can store 6 presets for each bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets.
    • Local Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. There are 4 level of sensitivity for FM and two levels for AM. The higher settings allow reception of only the strongest stations, while lower settings let you receive progressively weaker stations.

MOSFET50 Internal Amplifier: This receiver is equipped with a 50 watts x 4 (peak) MOSFET amplifier for low distortion, high power output. The amplifier is strong enough to power small subwoofers to moderate volume levels in compact cars and pickups. For higher volume levels from subwoofers, an optional amplifier may be connected to the preamp outputs.

CEA2006 Compliant: The power specifications for the AVH-X5500BHS are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers. The power output specs are as follows:

    • CEA2006 Specs: 14 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 1% THD-N)
    • Continuous Power Output: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 50Hz-15kHz, 5% THD)
    • Maximum Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels (or 50 watts x 2 channels at 4 ohms + 70 watts x 1 channel at 2 ohms for subwoofer)

EEQ (Easy EQ) w/ 8-Band Graphic EQ: There are seven stored equalizer curves which you can easily recall at any time. You can choose from - Powerful, Natural, Vocal, Super Bass, Flat, Custom 1, or Custom 2. The Custom 1 and Custom 2 EQ modes allow you to manually adjust the level (+/- 12dB) of each band of the head unit's 8-band graphic equalizer (40Hz, 80Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz, and10kHz).

Auto EQ (Optional): The auto-equalizer automatically measures your car's interior acoustic characteristics, and then creates an auto-equalizer curve base on that information. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone (130CDMC20, sold separately) is required to use this function. The Pioneer CD-MC20 Auto-EQ microphone plugs into your compatible Pioneer A/V receiver's 3.5mm input (located behind motorized front-panel). The Auto-EQ microphone should be placed in the center of your vehicle's driver seat headrest facing forward for EQ measurement.

Sonic Center Control: Sound that is suited for the listening position can easily be created with this function. You can adjust sound more toward the listening position left (7) to right (7).

Loudness: The Loudness function compensates for deficiencies in the low- and high-frequency ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness to High, Mid, Low, or Off.

Bass Boost: You can easily boost the subwoofer bass level by using the Bass Boost function. The Bass Boost feature allows you increase the subwoofer level from 0 to +6 (12dB).

Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. When the Advanced Sound Retriever is on, the high frequency range is compensated to match the frequency response curve to the original sound. There are two available levels of the Advanced Sound Retriever effect.

Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4 dB to +4 dB.

4V/6CH Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS features three pair of 4.0-volt preamp outputs (Front/Rear/Subwoofer). The unit's front and rear preamp output can be faded (front/rear), while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Crossovers: The AVH-X5500BHS employs high pass and low pass crossovers to tailor the head unit to your connected speakers.

    • HPF: The head unit's 12dB/octave high pass filter only allows frequencies higher than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) to your front and rear speakers through the unit's speaker-level or line-level outputs.
    • LPF: The subwoofer preamp output features an18dB/octave low pass filter so only frequencies lower than those in the selected range (50, 63, 80, 100, 125Hz) are output to your connected subwoofer.

Subwoofer Controls: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS lets you adjust the subwoofer preamp output's phase (normal/reverse) and volume (+6 to -24).

Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.

    AV Connections

Dual AV Inputs: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS has dual AV inputs to connect two external audio/video sources. The head unit has a rear-panel 3.5mm minijack AV input for connecting a portable audio/video device. There is also a rear-panel composite video/stereo RCA AV input for connecting a video component such as a mobile TV tuner or game console. The rear-panel 3.5mm minijack input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod/iPhone (using the proprietary Pioneer cable).

Video Output: The AVH-X5500BHS features a rear-panel composite video output that allows you to connect an external display to the unit. You can play back the same video source (except iPhone 5) which is being played on the head unit. You can select the unit to output a 16:9, Letter-Box or Pan-Scan aspect ratio to match your external display's screen size.

Rear View Camera: The AVH-X5500BHS is equipped with a composite video Rear View Camera input. The unit features a function that automatically switches to the rear camera image (Rear View Camera input jack) when an optional rear camera (130NDBC5, sold separately) is installed. When the transmission is in reverse, the screen automatically switches to the rear view camera (the violet/white wire in the AVH-X5500BHS's harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching). Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.9 seconds. Pioneer recommends using a camera with a mirror image (reversed) output. Audio from your music source will continue playing, while the back-up camera is displayed.

Navigation Ready: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS allows you to connect the Pioneer AVIC-U250 add-on navigation unit (130AVIC250, sold separately) through its RGB Input. This versatile hideaway unit allows you to switch to navigation mode with the touch of a button. Get to your destination by inputting an address or search through the POI library while enjoying whatever source is currently playing.

Note: If you are already using the head unit's RGB input to access AppRadio Mode from your iPhone, then you cannot connect this add-on navigation module (or vise-versa).

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS includes an IR remote control (CXE5116) for wireless operation of the multimedia head unit and your connected devices. There are no controls to answer/end or dial call from your Bluetooth-enabled phone.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Thanks for your question. The wattage is 14 watts RMS CEA-2006/50 peak x 4 channels). Hope this helps. [ Kenny  Apr 07, 2017 ]  Staff
No, actually, we you go to the Acc Screen, the background changes, and the source titles stays in place for your choice. [ JESSE  Jan 27, 2014 ]
I don't understand the question. That menu that you're talking about is a drop down menu, it's not permanently up unless you leave it open all the time. I'm sure if you out a custom background all the original screen options are still there. [ BRITT J  Jan 25, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Jan 20, 2014 ]  Staff
I do not know. I have never owned an iphone but I would imagine that it is. Most everything is anymore. I bought it strictly for the hands free phone feature because my truck did not have that. [ CRAIG V  Jan 09, 2014 ]
I don't know for sure. It worked with my iPhone 4s. I talked to Pioneer about a cable question and they have issued a firmware update to allow the unit to be compatible with iPhone 5C and 5S [ BRIAN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes it is. I have mine hooked up via USB cable and it works perfectly for listening to music and charging phone at same time. [ SHAUN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Not sure about 5s. Maybe it will be address in the next firmware update. Personally I would go down to any audio shop and see if it works. i'm sure the basic Bluetooth functionalities will work including the streaming audio. I would check with pioneer For further details. It has a touch screen calibration. Just make sure you calibrate it before installing e-brake . There is also an option to adjust the brightness of the radio for night/day. This comes in handy when you used the illumination wire. [ Elliott  Dec 24, 2013 ]
    Yes it is [ DAMIAN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
My iPhone 5 works fine through the Bluetooth system. [ THOMAS  Dec 24, 2013 ]
I have yet to purchase the cables to run the IPhone 5 [ JOEL  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes. Streaming works great. Phone calls are clear. I don't use Pandora so I haven't tried that yet. All else works great out of the box except goggle maps. The turn by turn voice doesn't work when paired with phone. This happens in my wife's 2012 infiniti as well so I don't think it's a pioneer issue. [ MICHAEL  Dec 24, 2013 ]
Yes, it is compatible with all iOS 7 devices. [ Joe  Dec 24, 2013 ]
I have an android phone, and i actually haven't got the app to work, but i use my phone paired , to listen to slacker and music i have on my phone it will let me change songs but i can't pick and choose what to listen to like on my iPod, [ BENJAMIN  Dec 24, 2013 ]
You will have complete phone controll all contacts on display and voice controll. All songs and albums display. This is a excellent radio [ TOMMY  Dec 23, 2013 ]
From Bluetooth you can control pandora like search thru the station that you already have selected. And then anything else can play thru Bluetooth option. So yeah a little changes from your adapter but the exact same [ JEFFERY  Dec 23, 2013 ]
    I dnt know but I have a scion tc 08 and it fits perfect [ PIERRE A  Dec 30, 2013 ]
Yes the adaptor they send has all the wiring for the Antana it's a great radio [ KENNETH  Dec 22, 2013 ]
    Yes [ BILLY  Dec 22, 2013 ]
    Yes [ THOMAS  Dec 22, 2013 ]
    Yes [ THOMAS  Dec 22, 2013 ]
    I didn't buy the camera. [ RICKY  Dec 20, 2013 ]
Im pretty sure by shifting to reverse it automatically senses via the connection to reverse lights. [ Daniel  Dec 20, 2013 ]
There is a wire on the radio that triggers the display to switch to the back-up camera. All you have to do is splice that wire into the positive side of the reverse light. I made that connection at the back of the truck in the trailer wiring harness. But you can just as easily make it on the reverse light itself. There is also a selection you have to make in one of the menus on the radio itself so that the radio knows wether to trigger on a positive (+) or negative (-) signal change. Hope this helps. [ JASON  Dec 20, 2013 ]
Sorry David, I don't use the backup camera and I haven't looked into it so I couldn't tell ya. [ DOMINIC  Dec 20, 2013 ]
The issue with the Titan seems to be the depth of this receiver. Our research shows that the Titan has just under 6.5" of depth available for the receiver, and this unit is about 6.8" deep. For further details please feel free to reach out to an Advisor by phone or chat. [ Jeff  Nov 29, 2013 ]  Staff
