Pioneer designed their DEH-X5500HD CD receiver to be the perfect vehicle for adding great sound, expanded musical capabilities, and the best-sounding radio available to your dash. This receiver lets you control your iPod® or iPhone® playlists when you connect them via the USB input, and offers Pandora® Internet radio control with your iPhone too. But if you're a radio fan, that's not the end of the story.
If you listen to a lot of radio, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of the HD Radio tuner that's built into this car stereo. The free broadcasts of your local HD Radio station are like regular radio, but with improved sound quality — FM broadcasts are near CD-quality, while AM is as clear as regular FM. And many stations, particularly public radio, broadcast extra channels of programming, so you can easily switch between news, music, or other alternative programming.
Pioneer's MIXTRAX feature complements this receiver's bright display with its variable-color illumination. Turn it on, and it adds a light show to your favorite playlists as the display pulses in time with your music, and it inserts transitions and cool effects between songs, keeping the energy high while you're cranking the tunes.
The DEH-X5500BT carries on the tradition of solid Pioneer sound with a powerful internal amp that leaves most car audio factory systems in the dust. You'll also enjoy a 5-band equalizer for tone control, plus Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever to perk up the sound quality of compressed music files. If you're looking to build a bigger system, hook up amps to the two pairs of preamp outputs to get things really rocking — a suite of sound controls will tailor the output of the receiver to your amps.
Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Pioneer stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Pioneer, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.
Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Volume knob does not stay set and is constantly turning itself down
Great product exactly what I wanted and more.
Pros: Great user interface and plenty of audio settings
Cons: nothing I can think of
I bought this product for my new car and it was an easy install no problems only issue is I can't seem to find the proper settings on mixtrax to play full songs instead of 2mins only, other than that it's great along with my pioneer speakers.
Pros: Easy install
Cons: Settings for mixtrax
Best money spent on my car in a long time. This unit is vastly superior in sound quality to my stock unit. A huge improvement
Pros: Value. Easy of installation
Cons: Can't dim (minor)
Bought this to upgrade from a factory 2003 Ford F250 CD/Tape player. This review is based upon this player, no amp, and factory speakers. If you've read the spec sheet on this player you can see you're getting a lot for what you pay. I can remember when a player like this would cost twice what this one does. Would I buy it again? Yes. For the money this unit is a steal.
Pros: Sound amplification - noticeable sound difference compared to factory player Equalizer - offers a wide array of sound structuring as there are several presets to choose from or you can customize yourself. Very versatile. Bass boost - nice addition to the equalizer; adds more 'depth' to the overall sound of the bass Nice clear display Remote - this is a nice addition as the buttons on the unit are a bit small to mess around while driving USB player - one of the main reasons I bought the unit
Cons: Cons: Tiny buttons on player Quite a few options - I hate to call this a con, but some people may find it a bit daunting to learn all the functions of this player. I think it is more of a lack of detail in the manual. However, you can find videos online of better explanations for the different options.
Pros: USB port, HD radio
Cons: Not as strong as the original radio when trying to pull in distant stations. Display doesn't dim with dashboard lights. Instruction book needs help.
Has a lot of functionality but have only have one function button with a long menu to get to them. A pain especially if driving. Likewise with getting station info. Most radios I have used give the full song title and artist and station. This only displays one or the other and not enough of the title so I just leave it on station frequency.
Cons: See review for cons.
Always buy through crutchfield. I just got my first car and wanted to replace my stereo so I looked here and found this pioneer. The next day I went to a big box store and bought the same model stereo there, bad idea, the stereo was cheaper but instillation gear was 30 bucks. Crutchfield would send all the install stuff free when you by crutchfield and their tech service is superb. My dad bought his stereo through crutchfield and they helped make the order. If you are deciding between pioneer, alpine, and kenwood go pioneer. Pioneer has the best value and the mix feature is awesome. Dad went with a kenwood for his truck and now that my parents have seen my stereo my mom wonders why my dad went kenwood instead of pioneer. They wish the kenwood had as many illumination options as mine and the mix. Untop of all the extra colors and features the pioneer is so much easier to control with so much more power. The pioneer is a 4 channel 50 watt putting out plenty of power for your car speakers. I will never by a stereo not made by pioneer.
Pros: Colors, The mix, Power, Easy to use, Affordable, High quality
Cons: None I wouldn't trade my stereo for any other one.
This is an awesome head unit! It was everything I was looking for! It has detailed equalizer settings for that perfect sound you are looking for and the display is sick! Definitely recommend!!!
Pros: It's a beast!
Seems to be a fantastic unit, well built and lots of fun features. It definitely takes some reading and re-reading of the manual to figure out how to use some of the features as it isn't overly intuitive. That said, once you take the time to learn the interface, it's a blast.
Pros: multi-color interface, iphone/pandora interface
Cons: complicated interface to learn
It's a great deck!! Replaced a older Alpine and kicks its butt...for the price it's hard to beat. The HD radio is nice sounds a lot better. Can't go wrong with this one.
Pros: Sounds great, HD radio, custom color options
Cons: The only con is the rear sub outputs are only 2 volts and not 4.
Looks and sounds great. Easy install!
This is a very good product. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a great stereo.
Cons: The only con is the size of the buttons. It seems as though they were built for ants!
It's was easy to install with the factory hookup provided by crutchfield
Pros: You can customize the sound and the amount of mzh going to the speakers and to the amps.
Cons: The instructions doesn't go into detail about the functions of the receiver.
Excellent looking and great sounding receiver. Does everything you need in a car stereo. AM, FM, FMHD, CD, MP3, and USB. I put this in my daughter's convertible and she was thrilled. The removable faceplate is great for when she leaves the top down and runs in a store, it goes in and out easily.
I simply can't figure out how to work this unit to my satisfaction. The instructions don't explain the purpose of most functions and getting the sound quality the way I'd like requires a PHD in electronic engineering! HELP! Furthermore, the buttons are way too small to be useful!
Pros: Good price, nice looking product.
Cons: Nearly impossible to figure out how to operate by one's self. The owners manual is useless too!Crutchfield response on 8/6/2013 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Great little unit. Not for a single second did I feel regretting this purchase.
Pros: Does everything I want it to.
Cons: Not really a con, however, I didn't notice that the next model up has BT connectivity until it was too late. Oh, well. Live and learn.
I replaced the Blaupunkt In my Dodge truck. I already have a Pioneer DEH 3200 in one car and a DEH 4400 in my other one. For me, the install was easy and setup very similar to the other ones. I'm very plaesed with the DEH X5500HD.
Pros: Sounds Great. Many colors to chose from on the Keys and Dial
Cons: None that I saw.
Great deck, so great in fact that I have it installed in both of my cars. Full of features, including the Mixtrack which was fun for about 5 minutes. HD radio is decent, but I mainly use it for the USB front input... got a thumbdrive loaded with music.
Pros: Adjustable display colors, ease of use.
Cons: Using the shuffle play mode with thousands of songs can be interesting... sometimes I might hear the same song more than once in an hour. Also, if you are skipping through songs and you hear your most favorite song ever and you accidentally skip over it, game over. You can't go back while in shuffle mode.
The pioneer 5500HD works perfectly, HD channels are a real icing on the cake. Every feature on this unit works great, the install was super easy, and the provided harness really made everything easy. I have always purchased Pioneer head units in my vehicles. The build quality is excellent, and all of the functions are easy to use, easy to navigate, and learn.Highly recommended, amazing value for the price.
Pros: HD tuning, aux input
Cons: The display can be difficult to read/see in bright sunlight...
Buttons are really small. Controls complicated by having to go through layers in tje Master control
Pros: Sound, value
Cons: Tacky colors,complicated controls
I ordered this CD receiver to replace the factory unit in my 2002 Saturn SL2 tat had begun speaking to me (e.g., doing whatever it wanted when I tried to make a selection). It has more options than I needed, and fit very well into the car. The multiple color LED options made it easy to 'match' the look of my car also. In addition, it was easy to install with the Crutchfield Master instructions. My 11 year old son did the installation. His first.
Pros: High quality unit and clear instructions. The pre-sales tech support was also very helpful.
It's a great deck for what I needed it for...
Pros: Great price, sounds great and I really like the light patterns.
Cons: I didn't have much of a problem with the menus but some people may...
Great radio, easy to install, love the faceplate, great value for the price. Love this radio, sound quality is great and the color options are fantastic. I never had HD Radio before so that was a treat, love the accessibility and the remote is a nice touch.
The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD I just bought and installed is a fine replacement that gives me the features I wanted: HD Radio, CD player that will play most all professional and home burned CDs, Aux input, and USB input. Installation on my 2007 Focus was easy once I figured out there were a couple of options and some of the install parts were not needed depending on the intall. Operation is OK, but the small buttons and interface could be better. It is still a learning experience. But it lets me plug in my Kindle fire to play music, put music and audio books on either the Kindle or the thumb drive, and play my CDs. Other than the small myriad of buttons and less than fool proof interface, I have found the FM reception is not the best. The stock Ford radio did better.
Pros: Easy install. Good value for what you pay. The features I was looking for.
Cons: Small user interface buttons and mediocre user interface. Keep the manual handy until you are fully versant in it's use and features. FM reception is not stellar.
After extensive research, I settled on this Pioneer model and was it a great choice. Very please with the sound quality, the features (IE: Apple direct connect, 3mm jack to name two), and the ease of installation. I put this in my 1996 Camaro and Crutchfield had the instructions, installation parts, to perfection. Very easy to understand these installation instructions. Took me about 30 minutes.. Back to the radio, it is very cool looking, plenty of color options for the display. One other common "con" in reviews I would agree with - it is somewhat difficult to understand the operation manual and to implement the changes, however, I think a lot of that is just getting used to it, as we all know, when you get a new phone, computer, or anything, it takes a little getting used to. THIS UNIT IS A GREAT DEAL!
Pros: Many features, ease of installation, great sounding unit.
Cons: Operation manual is difficult to understand, making adjustments is a little trying at times.
After much hemming and hawing, I finally decided to replace the factory cassette head-unit in my '95 BMW 318i convertible. Did quite a bit of research, narrowed down my choices to some pretty basic "must-haves" such as HD, USB and Aux ports, and also the ability to match display/button colors to my interior displays. The unit was pretty easy to install;. I had a couple issues with a mystery blue wire that when not connected resulted in no am radio reception, but fm was fine. A quick call to Crutchfield tech support quickly resolved the issue of the mystery blue wire which fixed the am radio problem. The unit itself is pretty nice. Lots of options and controls. Personally I don't think it's all that complicated. It took me 15 minutes of just playing with the options to get a good handle on the operation. The HD-FM / Standard FM pulls great signals. This with only a stock 18" flex antenna on the rear fender. I rarely have fade and it switches seamlessly between regular and HD. The display is really hard to read during the day. Not because the display is too dim, but the face of this unit is ultra high-gloss that reflects everything around. The only other negative that I would agree with is the user manual. It is poor-quality print and a very small font. It is pointless to even include it. Do yourself a favor and go to the Pioneer site and print out your own enlarged version. I increased the print-size to 150% just to make it look normal! Otherwise a nice unit.
Pros: Easy to install, easy to use, HD Radio reception, connectivity, variable light and button colors
Cons: High-gloss face too reflective. Manual nearly impossible to read.
All in all this is a great deck for anyone who is a daily drivers and loves to listen to the radio. Me and my friend installed it in about an hour and it was a very easy straight forward process all you have to do is match the colors of the wires up crimp and go.
Pros: Easy to install. Great sound quality. Great deck for the price.
I have had no issues with this receiver. It has many useful features that are very easy to use. I would recommend this receiver to anyone who is looking for a new car stereo.
I was looking for a good radio for my 06 Ford Ranger, when I purchased it, it still had a tape deck. I had 4 Kenwood FKC-C6894 6X8's already in the truck. I was surprised at how much better those speaker sounded with this deck. For a little over $100 I was not expecting much, but it was night and day. So glad I upgraded, it sounds great, even at higher levels. This deck has some nice features like the USB and front input and the option on screen colors is great. This unit is solid and worth every penny. Crutchfield is the only place to get your next stereo, they send you everything you need and the install was simple and fast.
Pros: Great power and sound, clear even at high volume levels and has a nice little remote.
Cons: Non so far
I would say this radio is an excellent choice on a budget which exceeded my expectations based on price. I installed this radio in a 2001 Ford F-150 which had another aftermarket radio already. The sounds was better than expected even with the factory speakers, once I replace the speakers with Pioneer TS-G6844R's it was better yet. The "Coolness Factor" has to be all the different colors you can choose from. The build quality feels solid.
Pros: Sounds is better than expected from a value priced radio.
Cons: Buttons could be a bit larger. for seek/scan and station presets.
Pros: Like the HD tuner, Sounds great, easy to set up
Cons: preset buttons a bit small. Takes a little getting use to.
My wife loves HD RADIO
Pros: Great product for the price.
Cons: USB only plays with i phone? what about ANDROID?
installation hardware fit perfect, instructions for install were good.stereo sounds very good with pioneer 600 watt 6x9 5 way speakers, built in graphic equalizer works well and easy to adjust
Sounds good. Still got to go deeper into the manual to figure it all out. But so far a pretty nice little unit with all the features I have been looking for.
Pros: All the right features.
Cons: No complaints.
Get this unit!!!!!! Build is great, power is great, features are great! Love my new Pioneer!
Pros: Everything is totally cool!
Overall great stereo, you can get better, but not at this price. Woke up my stock speakers and sounds great.
Pros: Pioneer quality and sound.
Cons: Menus get a little confusing, but you get used to it.
Love this head unit! For the price it's great and sounds so much better than my old stock radio. Love the color selections too
Pros: Color selection, sound quality and ease of use
It does everything i expected and then some. There was no wiring diagram with it but if you know how to match colors then you should be ok. Figuring out how to set it up correctly for your sound system is important and will work great when you figure it out. Great radio for the money. Great power for good speakers so no need to buy a jvc just because it has more rms watts.
Cons: hard to figure out what frequency to set things at, you just have to try different things. Better Instruction manual and wiring diagram would help.
Good Unit - easy install
Pros: Sounds good.
Cons: Can't find play lists on iPod...
Pioneer DEH-x5500HDReceiver is a bargain for the price.
Pros: Bargain priced
Cons: Mix Trax doesn't work well for me. And the display is hard to read on sunny days The manual is terrible. Doesn't really explain well and is hard to read.
Works great, easy to set up n change settings, looks good, easy to install!! I've allwayd used pioneers recovers. User friendly.
The primary reason I replaced the factory unit in my 2006 Ford Freestyle was iPod/iPhone integration, allowing me to have my full music collection instead of just a few CD's on hand. I had to make one call to support to confirm wiring for the factory subwoofer, but otherwise installation was pretty straight-forward. I'm very happy with the sound quality for all types of listening (radio, CD, aux, iPod inputs). My teenage son asked if we could swap stereos from the 2001 Taurus he drives. After explaining that there is no standard plug-and-play interface for car stereo wiring, he understood why that wouldn't work. He really likes the bass that this unit delivers as well as the variable color illumination, HD radio sound quality and the "Christmas light-like" funkiness of the mixtrax function. The only complaint I have is the instruction manual. The font is very small for my middle-aged eyes and I would appreciate a description of each of the functions. Don't just tell me how to change the setting, include a sentence on why I would want to (for example, why would I want to change the "Slope level" for the subwoofer?). I also wish there was an indicator light when the radio is operating in HD mode. These aren't major issues. Overall, I'm very happy with the sound quality and value of this unit.
Pros: Sound quality, HD radio, Crutchfield telephone support, variable illumination
Cons: Instruction manual
Excellent functioning stereo. The iPhone/iPod controls work great. There is a great deal of tunability from a stereo in this price range.
Pros: Good value, incredible features, easy to use.
Cons: It's a bit bright at night.
Overall this Pioneer deck has been a pleasure to use and listen to. The Crutchfield installation was a snap and the sound is great. I'm looking forward to using the HD radio function soon if I ever travel to an area that has it :) Overall I'm very pleased with the quality and the value of this unit, I would definetely recommend Crutchfield to anyone!!
Very high quality as expected by pioneer.
Pros: Lots of different color options, high quality output. Has preamp.
I researched several stereos for my Jeep YJ and I was originally focusing in on an Alpine unit, but then I read the reviews on this Pioneer unit and I was pretty impressed. After comparing several things between the Alpine and the Pioneer I settled on the Pioneer, primarily because of the reviews, price and HD radio feature. I am so glad I purchased the Pioneer. It was very easy to install due to the straightforward wiring and excellent instructions provided by Crutchfield. Once I had it wired up I fired it up and what a difference from the OEM stereo! It sounds so much better. The YJ has tiny 4" speakers to begin with but the Pioneer really helps them sound much better. I never had HD radio before, but it really does sound much better than regular analog stations. The USB, aux and Pandora functions are also very cool. The USB port allows me to play and charge my iPod simultaneously (NOTE: The iPod sounds better through the USB port than the aux port). Overall, a great unit and major upgrade from the factory unit. As a final note I wanted to let everyone know that I bought this Pioneer stereo through Crutchfield's online outlet store as a "Scratch & Dent" item for a significant savings. Scratch & dent items are noted on the website to have "minor" cosmetic blemishes, but let me tell you that my Pioneer looked like a brand new unit. I was expecting to find the face/display scratched or something like that but I couldn't find any damage whatsoever. Thank you Crutchfield!
Pros: Price - Bang-for-the-Buck Sound quality HD radio USB port Pandora feature Multi-color display with Mixtrax
Cons: System menus Difficult to program, however, once you do get it programmed it sounds great!
This was the most impressive receiver i have gotten from Crutchfield, and was very easy to install . Love the sound and ease of operation. Great radio reception.
Pros: Easy to use, excellent sound
Cons: none !
Its sounds great in my new SUV and it is easy to use
Radio works great for the price. HD sound outstanding once I got it to working
Pros: Great sound quality, easy to install
Cons: Dimmer does not work like it should. Hard to see the display in the daytime. Too bright at night
Outstanding unit. The factory unit in my mom's 2003 Nissan Sentra crapped out on her some time ago. At first the CD motor burned out and then after awhile the radio was shot as well. After shopping around online and in brick-n-mortars I settled on this head unit, mostly because of the reviews I read here at Crutchfield. I feel compelled to throw my hat in the ring along with the others. I have 0 experience with car stereos and this was my first ever attempt installing one. Was basically plug-and-play. Took about 30 minutes from start to finish. The receiver itself is truly awesome. The sound quality is outstanding. I can't get over how the 10 year old factory speakers on the basic audio package thump in her little car. LoL! I'm seriously considering getting something in this line for my truck. The illumantion color variety is large and this, along with the USB port were the main reasons I settled on this head unit as they were features that my mom seemed most interested in when we poked around in Best Buy. I still don't know what this mixtrax thing is... Limited HD radio stations in the area where she lives but on a drive to Kansas City noticed about 25-30 stations picked up. Sound quality on these HD stations is great. Really sounds like a CD. Anyway, easy to install, easy to setup, sounds awesome, cool display color options. Couldn't have been happier with the value and quality of this product... oh, and my mom likes it too... =]
Pros: Easy to install, sounds awesome, illumination options are "cool", awesome value
Cons: As with most aftermarket head units I've looked at, the buttons are small and can be a bit of a pain to use while driving. However, the remote remedies this issue for the most part, allowing for easier adjustments while driving.
The stock CD changer finally died after 9 years and with much consideration, I chose the DEH-X5500HD as the replacement. Crutchfield sales and tech people were exemplar and well appreciated for their efforts. Installation went smoothly enough, although this was no simple plug and play proposition. I wanted to utilize the factory amp and speakers, so I had to solder in about a dozen wires to make it happen. I wished I had a better schematic, but with 10 minutes of patient help from a Crutchfield techy, we got her done. Sounds great. Added new life to a favorite truck.
Pros: This HU is packed full of features, several I'll never use, many features to keep me busy learning how to setup and use.
Cons: The mounting bracket wasn't a factory fit... and the wiring diagram left much to be desired. If this Pioneer lasts half as long as the stock HU, it'll be money well spent.
Love this deck and the multi color faceplate is awesome. The clutchfield team is very helpful and knew exactly to do to fix the issue! Only down side to this deck is no dimmer settings so it is pretty bright at night. Good thing mines in a gmc denali I wouldn't want this in a small compact car. Plus would have loved Bluetooth but sadly it doesn't have it. Otherwise it sounds amazing compaired to the stock boss system. I would recommend this to friends!
Pros: Sounds great, amazing led lights
Cons: No Bluetooth, no dimmer setting for the brightly lit faceplate
Sounds great ,looks greats and easy to navigate.
Pros: The colors you could choose from is great to match with your car interior.
Cons: Wish it had more gimmicks but then again I didn't spend 400 or more on a radio. It does more than enough for what it is worth.
Overall this deck's features were the main reasons I purchased it. I have it hooked up via radio cable to my satellite radio. It works awesome and you can change the colors to match your stock themes.
Pros: very cost effective and easy to use
Cons: wish it had a dimmer function sometimes in the early AM its pretty darn bright.
Excellent Radio. Awesome features. Great sounding. Works perfectly as a shuffle control for my Sony MP3 player.
Pros: Easy to use. Surprising sound clarity. Never owned a Pioneer brand.
Cons: No true cons as of yet. Hard not to adjust while driving because it is sweet.
Excellent replacement radio. No problems so far.
Purchased the Pioneer X5500HD to upgrade my factory radio which had degraded to the point of a single speaker. It was time. The sound on the Pioneer is great, really crisp and clear, and was like hearing the music for the first time again! Install was pretty fast: 2.5 hours from start to finish. That said, the controls/menu functionality are along the lines of garbage, in my opinion. I'm definitely no stranger to tech; I read the manual 3 times in an attempt to try and control the illumination display, figure out the difference between "BLEND" and "HD" and why both have to be on. I'm also having a son-of-gun of a time trying to tune into HD radio, another reason I purchased this model (Dallas has several around the area). At the end of the day, there does not seem to be a way to make the illumination panel STOP rotating through a bunch of different colors (none that I've found), so get ready for a disco experience. Other than that, sound is great, great value, and it's manufactured well. I would have given this 4-out-of-5 Stars, but the controls/menu function made for a dismal, awful experience. I pray to God I never have to disconnect the negative terminal again, so I don't have to go through set up.
Pros: awesome sound from factory radio upgrade, makes factory speakers sound like a rockstar, HD Radio
Cons: controls/menu functionality is the worst. illumination is a bit techo/disco for my liking, I would like one solid color
I like most of the controls on this unit, except for the HD radio tuning. It was very tough to get HD1 (I think I stumbled onto it randomly), and I never did figure out how to get HD2. With my previous JVC, it was simple matter of pushing a button to switch between HD bands.
This cd player replaced an older alpine and this one sounds better and more crisp than my alpine did. I have alpine speakers in four door dodge they sound awesome. Pandora control on this cd player is awesome.
Pros: changes colors is neat, Pandora control with remote ease of use and sound is awesome
Cons: none so far
Overall great product, has all of the features I wanted at a great price. It has some cons, but probably would have to pay a lot more than it would be worth to get rid of the cons.
Pros: Good quality, has all the features I wanted.
Cons: Buttons are small and to access certain features it takes a few steps which is somewhat annoying, the display of what the song is or radio station could work a little better, but it's not that bad..
Fantastic features for price. But Pioneer has lowest watts per channel of major brands. Also HD doesn't function nearly as well as 4 year JVC that I have. Also MIXTRAX does not work on tuner or cd mode.
Works way better than the factory one
I installed this in a 97 Lincoln Town Car. It's not exactly what I was looking for and knowing what I know now, I would probably have purchased a different unit. However, that being said, the unit works well and I'm not upset with it and would recommend it to others. After quickly browsing the manual I was able to navigate through the menus, set the clock, adjust the equalizer etc. After only owning it a short time I was able to do this be second nature. One of the easier to use units I've purchased. It has variable color display presets. Custom tweaking of the colors or brightness would have been nice. Hey it also has a 5-band EQ. Very nice! The button lighting was too bright at night. The dimmer function is almost useless as it barely dims the light. Perhaps if the stereo was mounted in a lower position it wouldn't be as much of a problem. Quite frankly is dangerous to drive in the country at night with the stereo lights that bright. I don't think it would be possible to see deer, or other obstacles that enter the road from the right side. I actually have to hang something in front of the knob so as to reduce the glare. The display lighting doesn't have enough contrast with the background when using most of the available colors. Some where acceptable but none were great.
Pros: Value. Ease of use. Variable color display. Remote Control
Cons: Button lighting too bright. Display lighting too low of contrast. Dim function pathetic.
Excellent sound with a 5 band equalizer to fine tune it. Nice to be able to customize it to whatever color scheme you want. Only thing I don't like is that the menu button is pushing the volume dial. So when I go to adjust volume I accidentally click into the menu. Other than that everything is perfect.
Work Fine - Fast Delivery - Good Value - I don't care about "Coolness"
Pros: Good Sound - Looks good - For my wife's VW Beetle - She Likes It!
Cons: As one reviewer mentioned: Does not fit a VW Beetle well! I really had to force it in, but got it!!!
This stereo was for my daughters car that she drives to school. She is extremely happy with it and it works well. One concern was the tuner as we live in the "boonies" but this has very good reception. She mainly uses the i-pod connection though. Installation instructions were right on target which made this go fairly well.
Pros: Easy operation, good looks
Very easy to use, and works perfectly in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler, and with the adapter it looks like it was meant to be there. It was easy to install as well as it is easy to program... Plus the LEDs look awesome!
This radio is awesome and makes my factory speakers sound great! I recommend this head unit to everyone.
Very awesome head unit! Easy to use and fits my car perfectly! I use it every time I drive!
Just installed this today. Getting it to fit properly inside the mount was a little frustrating, and it looks like I have some minor tweaking to do after I pop off the dash cover again. Sound quality is great, especially on FM radio. My old stock GM radio would be static-y all the time, very minor but noticeable. Lot's better now with this one. 2000 Chevy Blazer
Pros: Really cool look, love the illumination and HD radio capabilities. I was surprised to see how many HD stations there are that I never knew about. Sound quality on regular FM stations is excellent too.
Cons: Feels kind of cheap, which sucks because I paid this much for it. I mean, I'm not going to be throwing it around like a football but for the price it could be a little sturdier. Not enough to dock it down to a 3 star.
This is an amazing radio. I purchased it from crutch field and they helped me out with the installation. They sent the packet with pictures and some words on how to install. I like it and my friends think it is cool.
Pros: Aux port USB port Changes colors Loud Bass can go high Easy to control Not a lot of money for a good radio
Cons: No I need to spend more money on some Better speakers because this radio is so good.
Good radio for the price. I have an 04 Silverado and it was a few centimeters to wide. I was able to make it work, but the site said it was the correct fit for my vehicle.
Pros: Easy to use sounds great
Cons: The size was a little to wide truck trim had to be slightly modified
Freaking awesome radio. I had a Panasonic radio before and a friend suggested I get the Pioneer because Pioneers are the top car stereo quality brand. I said ok let me try it out and man am I glad I did. I have infiniti speakers installed with the dynamat and when I say my radio kicks it KICKS! and I don't even have an amp. The right speakers are important!!! If you don't have the right speakers you won't enjoy the radio. I am so happy with how the radio works and the color schemes are cool to play with. I strongly recommend this radio. You won't go wrong. BIG UP Crutchfield for their great customer service and their product offerings!!! Yuh Dun Know!!!
Pros: Powerful Head unit even without an amp.
Easy to install. Ipod works great with this unit and it even charges it. But buttons are small and really hard to adjust while driving.
Pros: everything was there for installation and was in and working in less than 30 minutes
Cons: Hard to adjust while driving. Radio controls very small and remote should help for passenger
Easy to install. Sound is great. Love the remote and USB port.
Pros: USB port for mp3 player. Use it all the time.
Cons: Small buttons, however I use the remote so no big deal.
Works great it's a very sturdy build and I mean it I had my aux cable plugged into my phone to the stereo and got out of my car and rippe it out it broke the aux cable but did nothing to the stereo. Great for subs and just regular speakers.
Pros: Sturdy, plenty of color options, sound quality is great.
Cons: Buttons are a tad small and takes a little while to get use to all the feature but what new item doesn't
very nice stereo and has a wow factor when I need a new one I will be buying it for myself. It was a gift to my husband for valentines day.
Wow what can you say about Pioneer but wow. Once again i am very happy with my radio. Has a lot of fathers in a small package.
Pros: MP3/WMA/CDA format with USB plus line in all on the front panel. Some things i can do with out but you can turn them off "MIXTRAX"
Haven't used radio to full capacity yet but in love with being able to play music from my phone.
Pros: HD radio, light up display, playing music from portable devices.
Cons: Haven't found one yet.
I've been using this receiver/CD for a few months now. I can not believe how much better this radio sounds compared to the OEM unit. I have a hard time keeping the volume low enough to not damage ears! Installation was a breeze. Instructions on which configuration of the bezels to use, weren't very clear. Most of the time I use the USB input with a new "mini" flash drive.
Pros: Easy to use once you learn the menu system. Awesome sound quality.
Cons: From drivers seat, hard to read the left side of display with fingers on the knob.
Everything works perfectly! Awesome for my ipod.
Finally got it installed. Now I am a PRO. Any questions feel free to ask if you have a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. By the way a big thanks to ALL of the tec support guys I called and asked questions with , BUT a really BIG thanks to Rudy x 5506. He thought past saying follow the instructions and said lets eliminate the wires you won't need, then the installation was so much easier. Thanks!!
Pros: Very cool colors. Easy set up. Sounds great. I only have standard speakes - but it still sounds much better than the OEM radio I had. And I now have a CD player. Great product for the price, better if I did not have to waste money on the GMOS thing.
Cons: It really SUCKS that you have to buy a GMOS to make the connections. Really?? I have nothing but the standard package. No onstar, no power this or that, a standard radio. I had to take an easy 2 plug from the OEM standard truck radio to a mind blowing array of wires just to hook this up. BAD.
all the features of the cd player are nice
Pros: one remark there is no any hd radio station available in my area
I originally owned a Pioneer stereo which was great, but it was outdated and was missing features that I would like to have (like mp3 playing capabilities). I ordered this one and got it installed today and it makes my whole system sound 10x clearer, louder, and overall better. AND I'm able to play my iPod directly from it. I would recommend this stereo to anyone that is looking for a great quality stereo.
Pros: Makes speakers sound much clearer & looks great
Pioneer makes great head units and because my P8400BH was so good I got this model for my girlfriends '04 Camry. Install was very easy once I figured out one little hiccup. When installing the dash kit you do not need to use the metal brackets that the old stereo used. I thought this was the case because it snapped into the dash and looked like a support piece so I was trying to make it work. After some searching online and a quick call to Crutchfield support it was quickly determined they weren't required. The head unit unfortunately cannot be dimmed lower than the almost useless "on/off" setting. So even when ON it's annoying bright. I sent an email to Pioneer support asking why my older 8400 model can be dimmed to my liking yet this newer model can't. They simply said it wasn't a feature.
Pros: HD radio, USB connectivity, AUX input. Lots of useful features for a good price.
Cons: Display is too bright and the settings menu doesn't let you set it to your level.
I was skeptical at first because I couldn't figure out how that small unit would take the place of the large one that came stock in my Miata. With the combination of on line and on phone, I was convinced it would work. The plus was , now I can hook up my ipad, ipod, iphone to the unit through either the USB port or the auxiliary jack. I now also have a place to store my phone while driving. I love all the different colors in the display. You can set it which ever one you want , but I kind of like watching it change (of course when I am stopped at a red light or just sitting in the car waiting for my other half to come back to the car. Pioneer has always been excellent on quality sound and this is no exception. Cruthfield has always come through for me too.
Pros: When I told my installation guy it should only take about 1/2 hour, he said it's not as easy as you think. But he was done in 45 minutes - and that included getting the CD out of the old unit that was stuck in there and wouldn't come out. The CD was unharmed.
Cons: There were no connectors so I was charged $20.00 upon installation for the caps to keep the wires together. Instructions for use of unit were very hard to read and a little confusing. I had to use a magnifying glass in addition to my reading glasses to read it. A lot of things to go through on the unit to get to where you want. I still haven't set the equalizer nor my radio stations.
great stereo sounds great cool looking with the color choices still trying to figure out mixtrax but overall it is great everything they said it was and very easy to install everything fit perfect.
Nice little radio with pretty good sound. I plan to upgrade my factory speakers to get a little better sound. Installation was not too bad. The master instruction sheet was nice and clear with helpful pictures. I had to use the PAC adapter with my jeep wrangler. The wiring instructions were poor. But a quick phone call to Crutchfield fixed that. O had to call about three times to match up some wiring. Each time use rep. Was very helpful and talked like he was sitting next to me. He knew what wires I had and what I needed to do. I had to run out and buy some splicing connectors. It would be nice if those were included. I would even pay extra to save me the trip. So far do good. No problems after the install. All items working as they should. The display has cool flashing lights. The color scheme keeps changing colors. Looks nice but slightly distracting at night. All in all with the money.
Pros: Hd radio sounds great. It's nice to have a bigger variety of radio stations that ae free.
Cons: Buttons are a little small if you have big fingers.
I am overwhelmed by the ultra-sharp clarity of the lights. I installed this unit in my son's Ford F150. The equalizer is a little hard to get used to, but once set, it's good to go.
Pros: Awesome clean power and great light display
Cons: Equalizer takes some time to get familiar with.
When my girlfriend wished she could get HD radio, I was glad Pioneer had this model. The DEH-X5500HD can source audio CDs, a USB thumb drive, and the tuner, nothing more, nothing less, exactly what she wanted. So far, never had an HD station drop out. Installation was straightforward, and everything fit fine. Installation did take some time, but just because my girlfriend's car is a Toyota Prius. To get to the radio one has to essentially take out all of the dashboard panels from the left side of the steering wheel across to the passenger side. As other reviewers noted, menu navigation for the DEH-X5500HD is not user friendly. It took me as long to set up the audio and clock as it did installing the radio. The user manual is not very clear, either. But, the bottom line is my girlfriend loves the radio. Other than the fact she really enjoys the HD stations, she can't get over how cool the color varying display lights are. (The color varying lights is a bonus since I didn't know this unit did that.)
Pros: Straightforward installation, great sound, stable HD reception, MP3 and WMA CD capable, USB thumb drive capable, really cool display lights.
Cons: User manual and menu navigation confusing.
Really a nice little headunit. I originally bought a JVC from Crutchfield for my 18 year old daughters birthday to go in her 2003 Subaru Forester. I installed the JVC and at first it seemed like it was just ok, but we quickly discovered that it had horrible radio reception and actually had some very odd sound compression artifacts that made the JVC basically useless. A quick call to Crutchfield and the Pioneer 5500HD was on it's way and an RMA for the JVC was emailed to me. About a week later, I received the Pioneer and got it installed. A few days after that, I got confirmation from my daughter that this new Pioneer was perfect, sound was great and she really liked the controls, layout and radio reception, especially the HD reception. For the price this is a really nice headunit.
Pros: great sound, enough power to make for a really nice upgrade using factory speakers, easy to set up, perfect HD reception, looks great and super easy install.
Cons: NO ANDROID SUPPORT.!! This is a real bummer with this unit. My daughter has a Galaxy S3 and was really hoping that Pioneer had the android support figured out by now. This may work with other Android devices but does NOT work with the Galaxy S3. Wire gauge is too small and makes it a bit of a challenge to connect to the dash kit that shipped with the unit.
excellent product my daughter is elated
This unit replaced another brand that i had previously purchased and had nothing but trouble with. The first thing I noticed about this unit is that it pulls in lots of radio stations, and it locks in to the HD stations without constantly switching back and forth between HD and analog FM. HD sub-stations are easily selected using the up/down seek button without having to navigate to complicated menus, what a headache that was. The song artist and tittle are displayed at once without having to toggle between the two. Right out of the box this unit sounds great, but tweaking the sound options makes it sound incredible. Lots display/button custom lighting options to match your car or whatever your mood at the time. Cool mixtrax eye candy feature when using the CD or USB, get the party going.
Pros: Lots of custom lighting options; excellent HD radio reception, best tuner selectivity/sensitivity I have seen thus far; HD radio sub stations tuned without using cumbersome complicated menus; shows artist & song name without having to toggle between the two; lots of sound tailoring options; excellent sound quality; fast USB access.
Cons: Seek Up/Down buttons are too small, your fingers hurt after repeated use; faceplate release latch on same side as USB stick, faceplate tends to come off with USB stick if not held down; wiring harness wire gauge 18AWG much smaller size then 16 or 14 standard wire gauge; display current regulation poor some digits dim when others light up; no seek up/down beep option; volume button has a shallow protrusion makes it hard to grasp; cryptic user manual not very useful.
For the most part this head unit is actually pretty nice. The HD radio sounds much better than just regular F.M . I do like the fact that this unit has built in 5 band eq. Seemed a little hard navigating through the options on this unit but after reading manual and messing with it for a while it has become quite easy. I do like the different display colors on the face of the unit. you can change the colors and also adjust their brightness. The usb port is what i like about the unit. Now if I want i can use my ipod touch or a usb flash drive. The sound coming from this unit is also much better sounding than my old pioneer head unit. Maybe just newer technology? The sound retriever is also a nice feature. It brings out the best in compressed music. Seems pioneer has cheapened their product, but for the price I guess I can't complain. All in all I believe this is a good product for the quality and price. Would recommend. By the way, Crutchfield is a great company. Stands behind you all the way.
Pros: Lots of options and good sound quality.
Cons: Not quite as good of build as pioneer units in the past, but still worth the money.
I love this radio, easy to install, cool colors, fun features ! Perfect for my Mazda 3.
Cons: The USB is a little tricky to use at first, but you will get the hang of it
As always Crutchfield delivers a great product... Great head unit. The iPod/Pandora integration works well. Navigating the menus is easy and straight forward. Plenty of control over the sound, the preset EQ setting are actually pretty good! Thank you to Crutchfield for including all the necessary components for installation, which by the way only took about 30 minutes. Installed in an 04 Ram with Blaupunkt door speakers.
Pros: Easy install. Great sound. Looks good.
Cons: Ordered the dash kit with the pocket under the HU. Pocket is too deep to hold the radio remote and too narrow for even my fingers to fit.
Works great. Not a single disappointment anywhere. My wife is super happy happy happy!
best unit for the price great with pandora cool color combo charges my iPad while I listen to my iPhone thru aux removable face no negatives yet
As usual, Crutchfield service & delivery are first rate, the best. I have installed half a dozen car receivers in the past few years. Never had I ever seen such a useless manual. Although the physical size of the manual is larger than usual (half of letter sheet size), the font and type size made it illegible. The font is shaded light gray, the type size is about 4 points, and the paper is pale beige in color. It's just not legible under even bright daylight. I downloaded the PDF file from the Pioneer web site. Guess what, it has the exact same shaded text and small font as the printed manual. The only way to get a usable manual was to print the PDF at 200% and rotated on letter size paper. Pioneer should not have been so thrifty with ink. This receiver was installed into a '98 Toyota Sienna with the "factory Premium" sound system. This Pioneer is the best sounding out of 6 or 8 units that I've tried. The bass is reasonably crisp, not boomy and does not drone. The midrange has presence, not honky. The treble is not brittle, although I do wish that I can move the treble center frequency a little higher than the fixed 8 kHz. The USB memory performance is the fastest I've ever seen. The files and folders are scanned, and music started in less than 8 seconds.
Pros: Very good audio performance. Very fast USB performance.
Cons: Useless manual. The button labels could be a little bigger for better legibility while driving.
for the price it has everything i was looking for sounds, looks, im thinking about geting one for my truck . and for the guy dryn about small buttons , you need some bottle caps on bro . :)
Cons: couldnt find any .
I just installed this unit in a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe. The sound is incredible with the factory speakers! The menu navigation is a little tricky at first. It works great with my iPod touch and Pandora (when I have wifi). Cant beat the value with this receiver. It was very easy to install. I used the posi connectors- no more soldering! I had it wired in about 10 minutes and it took about a half hour to install!! The installation kit and wire harness were a perfect fit!
like this radio so far, super tuner gets a better signal tham n the factory radio, took me a while to find out how to shuffle songs from ipod, and difficult to find hd stations, but overall good buy
Pros: great tuner
Cons: could be easier to use
I am very disappointed in this receiver. I went with the recommendation of the Crutchfield advisor, and boy was I badly advised. I specifically asked for an easy to use receiver; but this one is awful. It is hard to imagine a worse design. Impossibly small buttons that are hard to see; no simple OFF button; the only way to adjust anything is through a very complicated 'menu" feature; and you will get used to using that because you will hit it all the time so you get to adjust the display colors again and again and again. What the designers were thinking is beyond me - THIS IS A CAR STERO - you should not have to stop the car to adjust the thing. And it comes with a remote - REALLY - I guess that is so you can give it to a passenger because THE DRIVER surely could not safely drive and use this receiver. It will work if you put it on one station and never touch it again.
Pros: It looks good. Second - the Crutchfield Installation Kit is fantastic. Everything you need with excellent customer support, they knew the car and all likely mistakes; outstanding.
Cons: Very poor design. Impossible to use. Do not buy.
I love this stereo
Pros: Love the hd radio it also lights up in various colors easy to.use and easy.to install
Sound is incredible even though stock speakers of 2000 jetta. I would highly recommend this unit!!!!
Pros: Power sound is incredible
Cons: Stock speakers in my car
The controls take a little getting use but otherwise it seems fine. Just be aware these radios they sell here are not as simple to install as they want you to believe. If you've never done it before I'd pay the extra money and let the pros do it. Anyone who says it's easy probably has experience installing radios.
Pros: Good sound, features and look.
Cons: Can't seem to display the clock without the radio being on.
Sound is good easy to install in an hour I was listening to my jams I just wanted it for my I pod
Awesome new product that pioneer has. Nice solid unit the only thing is the plastic buttons around the knob seem cheap but time will tell. i have this unit powering 4 speakers no amp no sub it sounds amazing my stock unit was flat when it came to bass and screechy in the highs, the sound quality is amazing. I is a nice feature to change the colors but the menus take getting used to. This is also my first aftermarket head unit so i will get used to it. Mixtrax seems pretty good but u get sick of the same swoosh nosie after about two songs. Overall nice unit would recommend it.

Installation Angle: Optimum CD playback performance is obtained when the unit is installed at an angle of less than 60-degrees.
24 Bit D/A Converter: The Pioneer in-dash head unit utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.
MOSFET Amplifier: The DEH-X5500HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power specifications for the DEH-X5500HD are compliant with the CEA2006 Mobile Amplifier Power Testing and Measurement standards from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). These standards were developed as a way to equitably compare power specs from model to model and between manufacturers.
Advanced Sound Retriever: The Advanced Sound Retriever automatically enhances compressed audio and restores the original richness of the recording. Hear the detail, warmth, and clarity, the way the artist intended it, from all of your highly compressed MP3 and WMA files stored on your USB device, iPod/iPhone, and portable media players. By restoring data (especially higher frequencies) that tends to get lost in the digital compression process, Pioneer's Advanced Sound Retriever technology enhances audio reproduction nearly all the way up to 20 kHz frequencies
Equalizer: The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD features a Preset & Custom EQ. The built-in equalizer offers 7 preset sound modes (Powerful, Dynamic, Vocal, Natural, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Flat) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The two Custom modes allow you to manually adjust the head unit's 5-band EQ (80Hz, 250Hz, 800Hz, 2.5kHz, 8kHz) from +/-6dB. Custom 1 can be set separately for each source (except for USB/iPod/Pandora); while Custom 2 and the other 5 presets are shared settings used for all sources.
Bass Boost The DEH-X5500HD features a bass boost function which can be used to enhance low-frequency bass sound. The bass boost function can be set between 0-6.
Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for deficiencies in the low and high sound ranges at low volume. You can set the Loudness feature to Low, Mid, High, or Off.
Source Level Adjustment (SLA): This function lets you adjust the volume level of each source to prevent radical changes in volume when switching between sources. Settings are based on the volume level of the FM tuner, which remains unchanged. Each source can be independently adjusted from -4dB to +4dB.
4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.
Subwoofer Control: When the head unit's preamp output is configured as a subwoofer output, you can select the frequency of the low pass filter (50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 125 Hz), select the filter slope (-6/-12dB), select the subwoofer phase (normal/reverse), and the subwoofer gain (+6 to -24).
High-Pass Crossover: When you don't want low-frequency sound to be heard through your front or rear speakers, you can simply active the head unit's HPF (high pass filter). By activating the HPF, only frequencies higher than those in the selected range are output from the front or rear speakers. The high pass filter crossover can be set to 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160hz, 200Hz or Off. The slope level of the HPF can also be adjusted to -6dB or 12dB.
Switchable Rear Channel/Subwoofer Speaker Output: The rear speaker outputs can be set to provide full range output with full fading capability, or they can be set to provide non-fading subwoofer (low-pass) output. When the rear speaker outputs are set to subwoofer mode, the rear preamp outputs also switch from full range to subwoofer outputs. When set for subwoofer operation, you can connect the rear speaker leads directly to two small 4-ohm passive subwoofers or a dual voice coil sub with 4-ohm voice coils. If you prefer to use a single 2-ohm subwoofer, you can connect the woofer to one set of speaker leads, leaving the other set of rear leads disconnected. The maximum output provided when a 2-ohm load is connected to one set of leads is 70 watts.
Detachable Face Security: The Pioneer DEH-X5500HD in-dash CD receiver features Detachable Face Security. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. Color Customization: Color Customization lets the user match their receiver illumination to their vehicle's interior lighting. Over 210,000 colors are available to match the illumination of almost any car. The button illumination and display illumination colors can be customized separately for an endless number of color combinations. You can select from 27 preset colors (White to Rose), customize an illumination color (by adjusting Red, Blue, and Green brightness levels), or scan through various color settings (All/Warm/Ambient/Calm/Custom).
MIXTRAX Illumination: MIXTRAX features a club-style illumination that enhances the mood with a dynamic dance club-like lighting effect. As MIXTRAX begins, lights start pulsing to the beat of the music, adding an extra level of entertainment. You can choose among twelve patterns of lighting variations from sound pressure level or low-pass synchronization modes. The lighting effects work like a spectrum analyzer, reaching peak colors based on the intensity of the music. You can also choose which area's of the head unit's face illuminates; select Display, Keys, Both or Off.
Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the Clock Display has been turned on, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns off audio output, but the clock display and button illumination remains on (you can press the "DISP" button to turn off). When the Clock Display has been turned off, pressing and holding the "SRC" button turns the unit off completely. Even if you have turned the radio completely off you can view the clock display by pressing the "DISP" button. The clock will then remain On until you turn it back Off. When the unit is On, you can select between the clock display or the audio track/tuner display.
Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On/Off within the menu.
Wireless Remote Control: The DEH-X5500HD comes with an IR wireless remote control. The remote allows you to control the volume, switch between sources, pause the CD, change the display, and adjust the audio. You can also mute the volume (function that cannot be performed from the front panel).
Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
