Our take on the Panasonic TH-37PX60U

Panasonic's smallest high-def plasma is one sweet TV. The TH-37PX60U's 37" screen is big and bright enough to light up a family room or home theater. Yet the TV's petite size and weight make it a practical choice for a bedroom HDTV. Don't settle for a no-name plasma when a little more money brings you the performance and reliability Panasonic is known for.

This HDTV is able to receive both analog and digital signals via over-the-air broadcasts. If you subscribe to cable or satellite TV service, be sure to request an HD-capable set-top receiver from your service provider. Then, simply connect the receiver to the TH-37PX60U using either the component video or HDMI inputs. Before you can say "Wow," you'll be enjoying the clarity, detail, and vivid colors of HDTV.

Panasonic's latest plasma panel technology raises the all-important contrast ratio to a remarkable 10,000:1. That means you'll see deeper blacks and more realistic shadow detail. Panasonic also found a way to eliminate "false contouring" — a form of picture distortion that makes the transitions between different shades of the same color appear too sharp and abrupt, giving scenes an artificially layered look. The TH-37PX60U can reproduce up to 29 billion colors in total, with over 3,000 shades of gradation. Images look seamlessly smooth and filmlike, with beautifully natural skin tones and an effortless sense of three-dimensionality.

It already blows me away when viewing HD content!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just took delivery of my new Panasonic TH-37PX60U about a week ago. This is an amazing product and I highly recommend this series of plasmas to anyone in the market.<BR><BR>The picture while showing HD content is stunning, especially at the 720p setting on my Directv box using HDMI. The non HD channels look really good too. I'm going to keep the set dialed down for the first 100 hours or so during the break-in period, where the contrast, brightness, etc are turned down. The picture is a bit dark during this period but it still looks really good in a well lit room.<BR><BR>What really struck me about this model is that it appears WAY bigger in my house than it ever did in the stores. I'm sure it's that way with every set and it's no different with the 37" model. I have yet to watch a DVD on this set but I'm sure it will be nothing short of spectacular!!<BR><BR>This is a great looking TV that looks great both on or off!

Karen from Princeton, NJ on 4/22/2006

Purchased this TV for a client who was exceptionally satisified. Crutchfield servies is wonderful! I couldn't ask for more.

great plasma for the $$

dave from Philadelphia, PA on 4/9/2006

For anyone with a seating area from 9 to 12 feet from the TV, this is the TV to get. Priced the same as most LCD's (At this time) of the same size, you get a plasma that makes my 4 year old sony standard 37" look like a 1980's era TV.

29 Billion Colors: From deep blacks providing excellent shadow detail to vibrant colors rendering brilliantly bright scenes, the TH-37PX60U displays an incredible 29 billion colors.

3072 Shades of Gradation: Plasma displays can suffer from an artifact called false contouring, where transitions between different shades of the same color are too sharp. These transitions can appear as distinct lines between the different shades of color. Having 3072 shades of gradation helps minimize the false contouring artifact so color transitions take on a smooth, natural appearance.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in ATSC and QAM HDTV tuners, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or non-encrypted high definition cable signals.

Native Resolution: The TH-37PX60U has a display resolution of 1024 x 720. All incoming signals are converted to this native resolution. The Digital input and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, and will display them as 1024 x 720.

Progressive Scan Doubler: The progressive scan doubler displays a full frame of video in 1/60th of a second by de-interlacing the incoming video signal and progressively scanning the image. This scan doubler also provides even more image enhancement by improving the quality of diagonal lines in a moving picture.

Aspect Modes: Depending on the input signal, you can choose one of the following aspect modes:

  • 4:3: displays a 4:3 picture at its standard size with gray bars along the sides
  • Zoom: magnifies the picture uniformly (vertically and horizontally), so the top and bottom are cut off (recommended for letter box sources)
  • Full: stretches the picture horizontally to fill the screen (recommended for anamorphic sources)
  • Just: stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the screen but with aspect correction applied to the sides of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen (recommended for normal TV broadcasts)
  • H-Fill: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen, the side edges are cut off

Zoom Adjust: You can adjust vertical size and image position using the zoom adjust feature.

Picture Mode: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Vivid: provides enhanced contrast and sharpness when viewing in a well lit room
  • Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions with subdued room lighting
  • Cinema: for watching movies in a dark room, provides a soft, film-like picture

Picture Adjustment: Several picture settings can be individually adjusted, including Picture (white areas), Brightness (dark areas), Color, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature.

Video NR: Video Noise Reduction removes snow from a weaker analog TV signal.

MPEG NR: MPEG Noise Reduction reduces noise specific to digital signals.

3D-Y/C Digital Comb Filter: This filter minimizes noise and cross-color in the picture when the composite video input is used.

Color Matrix: When viewing a signal input through the component video inputs, this TV will automatically optimize the color parameters based on the color matrix setting:

  • SD: standard analog TV
  • HD: high definition TV
  • 480p: only 480 line progressive signal accepted, no SDTV

Surround Function: The surround function enhances audio response when listening to stereo programming. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

Audio Leveler: The Audio Leveler monitors the difference in audio levels between inputs and minimizes the change in volume when you change inputs.

Sleep Timer: This television features a built-in sleep timer, set by remote control, that turns the TV off automatically after 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Programmable On/Off Timer: The programmable timers allow you to program the TV set to turn itself on and off at designated times, on designated days, tuned to designated channels. Up to 5 events can be programmed using the timers. An event can have multiple episodes (Daily, Mon-Fri, Every Wed, etc).

Input Labels: Each input can be labeled to reflect the source connected. The label options are Skip, VCR, DVD, Cable, DBS, PVR, Game, Aux, and (blank).

Channel Label: Each programmed channel can be labeled. The name can be up to seven characters.

Input Skip: If an input's label is set to skip, that input isn't selected when toggling through inputs with the TV/Video button.

Lock: The Lock function has four settings to block viewing of particular channels or inputs. You create a 4-digit password that's required to bypass the lock. The available settings are:

  • Off: nothing is locked
  • All: all channels are locked
  • Game: channels 3 and 4 and the video inputs are locked
  • CH: locks specific channels

SD Card Slot: The SD card slot on the front of the TH-37PX60U allows you to view JPEG photos on an SD or miniSD card. An adapter is required to use a miniSD card. You can rotate images and show them individually or as a slide show, with adjustable picture duration.

Parental Control: This TV incorporates V-Chip technology, allowing you to set a viewing limitation based on the TV and movie ratings. The limitation is customized to specific industry ratings. The control is accessed and protected by the 4-digit password.

HDAVI Control: Some new Panasonic source units which have an HDMI output also have the HDAVI Control feature. This further integrates and simplifies the system control using the TV's remote.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, DVD players, DVD recorders, personal video recorders, cable boxes, and DBS receivers. The OK button and directional keys allow you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: The HDMI 1 input has a dedicated RCA audio input, HDMI 2 uses the RCA audio input of A/V input 2 if needed. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. When using an adapter to connect a component with a DVI output, the RCA jacks are used to carry the audio signal.

Component Video Inputs: The two component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i input.

Digital Audio Out: The rear-panel optical digital output allows you to send a Dolby Digital bit stream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder. If the program doesn't include a Dolby Digital soundtrack, a PCM bit stream is output.

Front Panel Input: A/V input 3 on the front panel includes left and right RCA audio, RCA composite video, and S-video connections.

Wall Mounting

Wall Mounting: On the back of the TV there are four threaded inserts to attach a wall mount bracket. The inserts require M8 bolts and the spacing is 26.0" wide x 12.563" tall.
