With so many plasma TVs available from brands both familiar and new, how do you identify the best performers? Well, Panasonic is one of only a handful of companies that actually manufacture plasma panels — and Panasonic builds more of them than anyone else in the world. If you want to experience a lifelike HDTV picture today and for years to come, the 42" TH-42PX60U really delivers.

This HDTV is able to receive both analog and digital signals via over-the-air broadcasts. If you subscribe to cable or satellite TV service, be sure to request an HD-capable set-top receiver from your service provider. Then, simply connect the receiver to the TH-42PX60U using either the component video or HDMI inputs and enjoy the clarity, detail, and vivid colors of HDTV. This 42" screen makes DVDs look pretty spectacular, too.

Panasonic's latest plasma panel technology raises the all-important contrast ratio to a remarkable 10,000:1. That means you'll see deeper blacks and more realistic shadow detail. Panasonic also found a way to eliminate "false contouring" — a form of picture distortion that makes the transitions between different shades of the same color appear too sharp and abrupt, giving scenes an artificially layered look. The TH-42PX60U can reproduce up to 29 billion colors in total, with over 3,000 shades of gradation. Images look seamlessly smooth and filmlike, with beautifully natural skin tones and an effortless sense of three-dimensionality.

This is a great HDTV. The picture is amazing, and the on screen set up menu is user friendly.I did alot of research on plasma TV, and this is a great TV for the money.

Great set for the money.

Randy from Wichita Ks. on 2/15/2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture quality of this set with a true HD signal is superb. Non HD picture quality is of course not great, but it is better than many others I have seen. I am using a Motorola cable box hooked up via HDMI. I split the cable and ran one feed to the cable box and one feed into the set via the RF coax. On non HD channels, the Panasonic does a better job of scaling than the cable box does. I found that using the cable box for HD content and the direct cable feed for non HD to provide the best picture. I had no problems at all with communication via HDMI. The fact that this set has two of them is a rarity at this price.<BR><BR> So far I am very pleased with this TV.

Incredible TV

Erin and James from Portland, Maine on 1/10/2007

This is an incredible TV set - the factory default settings do not do it justice, do an internet search for picture settings on this model and you will find others have posted reccomended menu settings after running calibration DVD's - incredible picture in High Def - DVD's are excellent, digital cable is great, standard cable is OK, but now that we have this set we rarely watch any standard def programming. We literally have changed our viewing habits around high def channel programming. You will not go wrong with this model and it is well built. Plenty of inputs, consumer reports rates it very highly as well.

Good HDTV for its price

Igor from Pennsylvania on 1/7/2007

Panasonic TH-42PX60U 42" Plasma HDTV.<BR><BR>Pros: Has an excellent picture and sound quality. Great contrast, color gamma and decent black-level. HD shows/movies out of cable box via component cable look more than perfect. Excellent DVD-video (MPEG2) handling. Stylish appearance.<BR><BR>Cons: RCU poorly designed and has lack of ergonomics. No D-SUB (PC input) interface. No FireWire or USB interfaces. No CF (Flash) or XD cards support. No CableCard option but other than these it is good Plasma HDTV for its price.<BR>

The Best picture there is

Repulski from Logan. Iowa on 11/25/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

<BR>The HD picture on this set is stunning but the biggest surprise was how good everything else looks. There are plenty of hook-ups. I have owned a Toshiba 50HX81 that was calibrated but this beats it hands down.I don't even notice that it is smaller.I can highly recommend this set!<BR>

This plasma is incredible

David from Chicago, IL on 5/2/2006

I had originally purchased Panasonic's predecessor to this model and while waiting for it to arrive I found out about this plasma. Not only did it have enhanced features such as a significantly higher contrast ratio and 2 HDMI inputs, but it was $500 dollars less. I immediately canceled my original order and switched. One of the best moves I have ever made. The picture quality is incredible. It is far better than the 43in Pioneer which retailed for over $1000 more that a neighbor of mine recently purchased. The HD signal is so clear it feels like your watching it in 3D. My only complaint is that it will make you extremely frustrated that all channels are not broadcast in HD. YET!!!!! A must buy for both quality and price.

Great TV

Jeff from Mesa, AZ on 4/7/2006

I am a stereo/home theater nut. I really enjoy reading about products and have researched everything that I own thoroughly before I by. This is "the best" plasma out there. I'm glad I researched and took my time. I was all set to buy the Pioneer 43 inch Plasma. I'M SO GLAD I WENT WITH THIS TV, IT IS THE BOMB! What an awesome TV! The clarity is awesome! Playing King Kong or Star Wars Prequels DVD's was absolutely INCREDIBLE! Don't get me started on the HD Direct TV receiver that just came in! Did I already say that this is a great TV? If your looking for a plasma TV, YOU'VE FOUND IT!

29 Billion Colors: From deep blacks providing excellent shadow detail to vibrant colors rendering brilliantly bright scenes, the TH-42PX60U displays an incredible 29 billion colors.

3072 Shades of Gradation: Plasma displays can suffer from an artifact called false contouring, where transitions between different shades of the same color are too sharp. These transitions can appear as distinct lines between the different shades of color. Having 3072 shades of gradation helps minimize the false contouring artifact so color transitions take on a smooth, natural appearance.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in ATSC and QAM HDTV tuners, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or non-encrypted high definition cable signals.

Native Resolution: The TH-42PX60 has a display resolution of 1024 x 768. All incoming signals are converted to this native resolution. The Digital input and component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i, and will display them as 1024 x 768.

Progressive Scan Doubler: The progressive scan doubler displays a full frame of video in 1/60th of a second by de-interlacing the incoming video signal and progressively scanning the image. This scan doubler also provides even more image enhancement by improving the quality of diagonal lines in a moving picture.

Aspect Modes: Depending on the input signal, you can choose one of the following aspect modes:

  • 4:3: displays a 4:3 picture at its standard size with gray bars along the sides
  • Zoom: magnifies the picture uniformly (vertically and horizontally), so the top and bottom are cut off (recommended for letter box sources)
  • Full: stretches the picture horizontally to fill the screen (recommended for anamorphic sources)
  • Just: stretches a 4:3 picture to fill the screen but with aspect correction applied to the sides of the screen so that elongation is only apparent at the left and right edges of the screen (recommended for normal TV broadcasts)
  • H-Fill: enlarges the 4:3 picture horizontally to fill the screen, the side edges are cut off

Zoom Adjust: You can adjust vertical size and image position using the zoom adjust feature.

Picture Mode: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Vivid: provides enhanced contrast and sharpness when viewing in a well lit room
  • Standard: recommended for normal viewing conditions with subdued room lighting
  • Cinema: for watching movies in a dark room, provides a soft, film-like picture

Picture Adjustment: Several picture settings can be individually adjusted, including Picture (white areas), Brightness (dark areas), Color, Tint, Sharpness, and Color Temperature.

Video NR: Video Noise Reduction removes snow from a weaker analog TV signal.

MPEG NR: MPEG Noise Reduction reduces noise specific to digital signals.

3D-Y/C Digital Comb Filter: This filter minimizes noise and cross-color in the picture when the composite video input is used.

Color Matrix: When viewing a signal input through the component video inputs, this TV will automatically optimize the color parameters based on the color matrix setting:

  • SD: standard analog TV
  • HD: high definition TV
  • 480p: only 480 line progressive signal accepted, no SDTV

Surround Function: The surround function enhances audio response when listening to stereo programming. This function is active only for the TV's built-in speakers.

Audio Leveler: The Audio Leveler monitors the difference in audio levels between inputs and minimizes the change in volume when you change inputs.

Sleep Timer: This television features a built-in sleep timer, set by remote control, that turns the TV off automatically after 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

Programmable On/Off Timer: The programmable timers allow you to program the TV set to turn itself on and off at designated times, on designated days, tuned to designated channels. Up to 5 events can be programmed using the timers. An event can have multiple episodes (Daily, Mon-Fri, Every Wed, etc).

Input Labels: Each input can be labeled to reflect the source connected. The label options are Skip, VCR, DVD, Cable, DBS, PVR, Game, Aux, and (blank).

Channel Label: Each programmed channel can be labeled. The name can be up to seven characters.

Input Skip: If an input's label is set to skip, that input isn't selected when toggling through inputs with the TV/Video button.

Lock: The Lock function has four settings to block viewing of particular channels or inputs. You create a 4-digit password that's required to bypass the lock. The available settings are:

  • Off: nothing is locked
  • All: all channels are locked
  • Game: channels 3 and 4 and the video inputs are locked
  • CH: locks specific channels

SD Card Slot: The SD card slot on the front of the TH-42PX60U allows you to view JPEG photos on an SD or miniSD card. An adapter is required to use a miniSD card. You can rotate images and show them individually or as a slide show, with adjustable picture duration.

Parental Control: This TV incorporates V-Chip technology, allowing you to set a viewing limitation based on the TV and movie ratings. The limitation is customized to specific industry ratings. The control is accessed and protected by the 4-digit password.

HDAVI Control: Some new Panasonic source units which have an HDMI output also have the HDAVI Control feature. This further integrates and simplifies the system control using the TV's remote.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, DVD players, DVD recorders, personal video recorders, cable boxes, and DBS receivers. The OK button and directional keys allow you to move the on-screen selector, making menu navigation simple and efficient.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI Inputs: The HDMI 1 input has a dedicated RCA audio input, HDMI 2 uses the RCA audio input of A/V input 2 if needed. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. When using an adapter to connect a component with a DVI output, the RCA jacks are used to carry the audio signal.

Component Video Inputs: The two component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i input.

Digital Audio Out: The rear-panel optical digital output allows you to send a Dolby Digital bit stream to a Dolby Digital receiver or decoder. If the program doesn't include a Dolby Digital soundtrack, a PCM bit stream is output.

Front Panel Input: A/V input 3 on the front panel includes left and right RCA audio, RCA composite video, and S-video connections.

Wall Mounting

Wall Mounting: On the back of the TV there are four threaded inserts to attach a wall mount bracket. The inserts require M8 bolts and the spacing is 26.0" wide x 12.5625" tall.
