It's easy to record your favorite shows to DVD or VHS with the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK. This versatile recorder's built-in tuners let you enjoy both analog and digital TV broadcasts. Plus, if you have an HDMI-equipped HDTV, this Panasonic can upconvert DVDs to better match your set's high-resolution screen, so all your discs will look their best.

The DMR-EZ48K also makes it easy to back up your home movies. Its dual-deck design gives you the option of dubbing non-copy-protected material from VHS videotapes to DVD, or from DVD to VHS. The DMR-EZ48K can record to standard write-once and rewritable blank DVDs. This recorder also uses rewritable DVD-RAM discs, which provide DVR-like conveniences such as "Chasing Playback" — watching the beginning of a program while it finishes up recording. DVD-RAM discs also let you view a program you've already recorded while simultaneously capturing another.

The front panel looks very clean, but a flip-down door hides a several connections that are especially useful for owners of digital cameras and camcorders. The built-in SD™ memory card slot and USB port make it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the front-panel slot to view images, or connect your camera to the USB port. If you own a digital camcorder with a DV port (also known as "IEEE 1394 or FireWire®), the DMR-EZ48K's DV input lets you easily record your home movies onto a recordable DVD.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Outstanding product! Customer service is also outstanding.. I had to call two times in reference to set-up ect. Both times the customer service was great. Would recommend this product to anyone looking for a VCR/DVR recorder. Also due to the customer service personnel you will have someone that will be there for you. I have never given a 5 star to any product but this one is a great product.

Pros: Easy set-up, Customer Service if you have a problem

Cons: None that I can find at this time. However, If I do find any I know Customer Service will be there for me.

Fantastic service. Combo is an excellent unit to record and copy your tapes. I am very pleased and would buy more of these units if had the money. Easy directions and setup. No problems whatsoever. Buy with confidence from Crutchfield. You won't go wrong.

Hard to use dvd/vcr unit

OldBear38 from Carrollton, Texas on 2/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This DVD/VCR recorder seems to work OK but I found it dissapointing. Unlike my old VCR, it will not record broadcast TV to tape. The instruction booklet is very hard to use. The directions for almost any operation lead into a maze of references, taking one from section to section to section. I found it hard to figure out although it may get easier with practice. Also, there is no "eject" button on the remote so you have to go to the unit every time you need to change disks or tapes, an inconvenience. If you leave the unit turned off, It takes its' sweet time restarting and you cannot do anything until the start up completes itself. Not good if you want to quickly set up a recording session.

Pros: The unit does have a digital tuner. The picture quality seems good.

Cons: Hard to use directions. Not very convenient to use as a recorder. Will not record broadcast TV to tape.

HOPEA from LEESBURG,FL on 2/8/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit works well, but it is not user friendly.Read the manual and keep it handy. The unit is large so that I have it on a table behind my lcd. It lags in response and sometimes takes 3 or 4 remote commands to get to the desired function. Over the years I have owned a Magnavox,Samsung andthis one- this is my least liked. IT DOES DO AS NEEDED WITH A WONDERFUL PICTURE -the lags and many remote commands make me sorry I bought it.

Pros: Does as needed, many input selections and pretty clear recording

Cons: Not user friendly. It lags and takes mulitple remote commands to go through the features. Also a bit to large and heavy. Must point the remote directly to the front.

Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK

SteveM from Weaverville, NC on 2/6/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Short and to the point - this combo DVD/VCR player and recorder works well. There are not many combo recorders still being produced so the variety of new models to choose from is limited. It makes excellent copies of factory produced tapes that can be copied and, even better, copies with no loss or even improved quality of my own home-made copies of programming.

Pros: As many of the other reviewers state: read the manual. Also, make notes or copy the instructions that owners have learned from their experience. Extremely helpful and will make the use of this recorder relatively easy and fool-proof. The DVD system works well and the VCR works well with the limitations given in the "cons" section below.

Cons: As one reviewer noted on this product, the VCR does not track many older tapes that well. I got around this by using my older VCR with that has an excellent electronic stabilizing system to input a signal to the recorder. The manual system the EZ48VK provides did not do much to eliminate noise and roll. Other than that - obvious - it will not (at this point in my use of it) copy factory tapes with anti-copying info built into the tape itself.

Could not get it to operate on "scheduled recording". Could not record high defination TV to VHS tape. Was returned to Crutchfield. I put a note inside the plastic pouch inside the carton.

Fair product

Kent N. from Grand Junction, CO on 2/1/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, it works as expected but disappoints when a program is not recorded due to items in "con" section.

Pros: Recordings are of fine quality on both medea.

Cons: Will not record digital stations. Slow to start up. Does not warn of full DVD before recording.

Anonymous from Queens, New York on 1/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Slow to get to the recording process. Machine sometimes freezes and I have to reset. And if I hit the power button on the remote by mistake the time it takes to recycle seems like an eternity.

Easy to Use

Windy Hill from Los Angeles, Ca on 1/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Panasonic VCR-DVD recorder/player replaced one of our Panasonic DVD recorder/players. The older DVD unit had a firmware bug. The new VCR/DVD has that bug solved. The unit is easy to program. It is easy to get the "direct navigator" content display to work. The old unit was slow to read a disc directory, sometimes. The new one is not.

Pros: Easy to set up. Commands are just like our Panasonic DVD.

Cons: A little pricey.

This product is not recommended

Price from Genoa, IL on 1/10/2012

This product serves no useful function for the market for which it was designed. I have spent the better part of 18 months pushing the manual reset button and unplugging the unit to get it back on-line. The problem appears to be software related. When a problem occurs it dutifully shuts itself down for a mandatory self-check and requires a complete 3-5 minute reboot of the system. Too fast operation of the controller buttons appear to trigger some of the lock-ups. Software updates have not cured the problem. Discs which are just formatted are refused on re-insertion with a message stating incompatibility. This super-delux Panasonic product isn't ready for prime time.

Pros: Versitile input and output selection Past reliability of Panasonic products.

Cons: Functionality

Not Worth the Money

WritingBuf from Flushing, NY on 10/30/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not worth the money. Purchased this unit only after after my Insignia DVD/VHS Combo failed after six years. I expected more from Panasonic. Lacking features. Look somewhere else for a usable DVD/VHS unit. I'm should have researched before purchase.

Pros: It recorded.

Cons: Not intuitive; Cannot edit recordings; MUST finalize to view on other DVD units;

No IR Interface

Ed S from Wilmington NC on 9/29/2011

This is a good unit but you cannot place it put in a cabinet or equipment closet as it will not work with a distributed IR system such as Xantech. It requires line of sight. Only response I got from Panasonic was sorry for the Inconvenience so be aware of where you will use it.

Tape Copying

YettieRed from Kansas on 9/12/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to copy all my old family videos to DVD. It does a good job and is easy to operate once I read the instructions. I have quite a few old tapes and I am surprised at the quality I am getting from them.

Good product from a good manufacturer. Crutchfield was very helpful. I like the convenience of the VHS/DVD player recorder and they are getting hard to find.

very happy with this product

Anonymous from easton, md on 11/26/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I could not be happier with this product and am glad i overlooked the bad reviews. This unit is user friendly though you do have to read the operators manual and spend a few minutes to learn how to use it. The only fault i found with it is that it did take me a couple of days to really get familiar with it which i didnt see as a problem. as far as watching tv with the built in digital tuner it does take it a couple of seconds to change the channel but not longer than it took my external box to do the same. This is a great product and i would buy another exactly like it.

Joe from Minneapolis, MN on 11/7/2009

With the conversion to digital TV, I bought this player to have the digital TV tuner, DVD & VHS player/recorder in one. We already own a Panasonic DVD/VHS player/recorder, but it is analog, and cannot record TV (we use an antenna) - we liked that player. The digital tuner on this new device is terrible - so bad that it overshadows any positives about the DVD/VHS. It takes forever to change from one channel to the next, and if you try to flip through channels quickly, you never know which channel it will end up on. Considering I use the TV tuner significantly more than the DVD/VHS, I am returning this to the store I bought it from. I wish I had looked on Crutchfield feedback first - I see that others have had this experience too, and I wouldn't have bought this for my needs.

Wild Willy from Cincinnati Ohio on 10/1/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The people who diss this component must have gotten faulty equipment. My experiences with it have been uniformly good. Recording to DVD is an absolute snap. Just as hassle-free as ye olde VHS. Picture quality is equal to what you would see if you had watched the original, which is certainly a step up from VHS. (The VHS recording part of this box is as good as any other VCR I've had, which is to say there is some degradation of the original program material on playback, but not worse than other VCRs I've had.) Playback of DVDs is simple. I have decided to stay away from the commercial skip feature. It delays an annoying amount of time & it's just faster to use the fast forward X10 speed. Besides, I find I'd often rather have the thing skip 30 seconds at a time instead of the 1 minute this box does. Plus you can't press the commercial skip button 3 times in a row to get it to skip 3 minutes in one shot. You have to let it skip forward a minute, then press the button again, then let it skip forward again, then press the button again. Like I say, FF is easier. While I'm on the topic of the FF, I like the multiple speeds it will FF at. VHS playback is nice too, especially with the 2 speeds of FF. Too bad the commercial skip isn't available for the VHS component.

Frank from Baltimore, MD on 9/28/2009

I have had major issues getting audio playback after recording. While I can record there is no sound playing through my HDMI connected to my A/V receiver. I spoke extensively with Panasonic, and they have no solution or advice. I'd like to think that it's a setting somewhere but that doesn't appear to be the case. I've spent hours trying to figure this out Bottom line: not easy to use or program but you may have better luck than me. These things should be much more user-friendly, and I'm a pretty technical consumer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have come to the conclusion that most DVD recorders are trash. Although for the most part, it works. We do have to unplug the unit at least once a week after it completely locks-up. Our TV signal may not be so good in our area, but flipping through the digital channels is a nightmare. Press the button, and then wait for 30 seconds for the tuner to finally move or it may move to the channel you selected and then for no reason it bounces back the original channel. I would not buy this unit again is I had it to do all over.

Great product despite what some think.

Randall from Alabama on 6/22/2009

I'm using the cheapest DVD-RAM, DVD +R, and DVD +RW, disks I could find - it even salvaged some old disks my computer couldn't read or erase using Nero 9. The results have been perfect recordings every time, despite some of the DVDs were several years old and well worn. The "Auto" time feature has worked perfectly ever since I "auto" programmed the unit with my 60 local digital channels. (Tip: turn VIERA off unless you use a Panasonic VIERA TV) The "boot", using the low power standby setting, is also faster than a new fast PC using an AMD Phenom II 3.2 GHZ. processor. I purposely tried to confuse this unit, but could only do so by loading a DVD that was unreadable in my computer. All that happened was the unit froze and re-booted, and I removed the bad disk on the re-start. I tried to make it freeze up with button presses and could only do so by really punching numerous commands quickly. The tuner is also great and no worse than the better of most digital tuners. This unit does all Panasonic says it will, and it's the best to be found in the marketplace. It also runs cool in operation. This one will still be great once Bluray has become the standard. It works great with my Sharp LC-32GP1U and gives excellent pictures, up to 1080i, and audio (Dolby surround, and 5+1). Don't be fooled, this is a great consumer friendly unit and loaded with features. Just pay attention to what it does with the different types and formats of media, and you will have perfect quality recordings.

Tom from Scottsville, VA on 2/23/2009

Unit provides excellent OTA recorded picture quality. Easy to record from DVD to VHS and VHS to DVD. Need to read and understand manual because many of the functions are not intuitive. Unit is basically a computer with a digital tuner designed to record to DVD. The unit has to boot-up and shut down like a computer so their is a lag time from when you power the unit up until it records and from when the unit stops recording to when the unit powers down. You cannot record two consecutive programs OTA on different channels unless you allow for this lag. Also the digital tuner is slow to acquire channels. Unit had several problems. The first being the unit at times did not appear to properly power down in the off mode. The power supply would generate enough heat to cause the fan to run intermittently even though the unit was set at its lowest power setting. Second, the unit appeared to try to copy an OTA copied copy-protected VHS tape to DVD-RW. This was done while I was testing the unit. The unit display showed it was copying, the VHS tape was playing but nothing was recorded. When I tried to stop the recording the unit froze and I had to unplug the unit. When I tried to record the tape to a DVD-R the unit recognized the tape was copy protected and performed as it should. This is when I discovered the tape was copy-protected. Unit was returned to Crutchfield and I am awaiting its replacement

Worst Panasonic Product I Have Ever Bought

Walter from Orlando, Florida on 2/11/2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Best Feature: The Digital Tuner. Worst Feature: Machine Freezes Up Constantly. This has got to be the WORST Panasonic Product I have EVER purchased. The machine Freezes Up after about 3 hours of material on the disc. When you try to edit on this machine, it freezes up. It's NOT Crutchfield''s fault, they just sell what is out there. I did find out that even if the machine freezes up, the DVD-RAM discs will play on Windows Media Player. Save your old DVD Recorder to edit on. The other thing I don't like are the missing features from past models like the "Phrase List" in the Editing portion.

Progressive/24P: When this unit is connected to a TV supporting 1080/24p output via an HDMI cable, this unit displays each frame at 1/24 second intervals (the frame interval originally recorded in the film) thus faithfully reproducing the original cinema image.
