Our take on the Panasonic KX-TG6592T

A large screen and backlit buttons make receiving calls and dialing easy. Or you can let the phone do the talking — when a call comes in, Talking Caller ID announces who's on the line. You can even put unwanted callers on the phone's Call Block list, and when they phone you, they'll simply get a busy signal.

Panasonic's KX-TG6592T expandable phone system gives you clear calling and convenient features. The tone equalizer lets you adjust the phone for the way you hear — independently raise or lower the low-, high-, and mid-range tones for greater clarity. Do you like to talk with the phone perched on you shoulder while you do other things? Who doesn't! Both handsets have non-slip rubberized grips, so they're easier to keep on your shoulder, and out of the dishwater.

Go ahead and turn off the ringer when you go to sleep — you won't hear a sound, but you won't miss any calls. In Silent Mode, the handset's light-up indicator will still alert you when a call comes in or when you have a message on the built-in digital answering machine.

If you want to expand this system to accommodate a large household or small business, you can add up to four more handsets — for a total of six — still using just one phone jack.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It is a very good phone.

Pros: Easy to set-up and you don't have to charge the batteries for 16 hours like most other phones. It takes just 7 hours.

Cons: None so far.

as advertised

Local Customer from Cville on 1/1/2014

Just as advertised. Easy to install, good voice quality. I'm waiting to see how long the battery lasts. My last phone was a cheapy and, after a while, the base would not charge the handset properly.

Panasonic Continues KX Quality Upgrades

hafadai9 from Saipan on 11/27/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the third Panasonic KX-TG multiphone system we have had in the last 10 years or so. They last long, are foolproof in setup with clear directions. This newest 6592T system has a base and three other statellite phones throughout a two story large house. The coverage from the base station is as though it was feet away. You can easily walkout outside in the yard and still have perfect quality reception.

Pros: see review

Cons: none that I can think of - for any of the systems from today going back a decade, except replacement batteries become difficult to find after some years have passed - my wife and daughters tend to use the phones and not replace them to recharge for extended periods

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this phone for my mother for Christmas. Her vision is failing she needed a phone with a larger display along with a color match that would be clear. She loves this phone and is so grateful.

Pros: The color contrast of the display screen of white and black creates a crisp look for someone who is visually challenged

Cons: She has one disappointment just under the display screen are three black rubber type function buttons that are black on black. For someone who is vision challenged it would be helpful to someone in the future if they were white.

Telephone Features

Overview: The Panasonic KX-TG6592 Digital Cordless Answering System is a cordless telephone system with two handsets, plus a built-in answering machine. The system comes in an elegant black metallic finish.

DECT 6.0 Plus: DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) Plus technology improves on the original DECT 6.0. The error correction frequency is increased up to 80x, which increases the range and improves the transmission quality. Operating in the 1.9 GHz frequency range, the KX-TG6592 phone will not conflict with other wireless devices such as computer routers, wireless keyboards, microwave ovens and other common household devices.

Expandable Cordless System: In addition to the two included cordless handsets, you can add up to four more KX-TGA659 handsets, for a total of six. Other compatible handsets include KX-TGA410 and KX-TGA660.

Intelligent Eco Mode: The phone's Intelligent Eco mode automatically reduces handset power consumption when you're using the handset close to the base unit. This feature extends the available talk time by suppressing the power it takes to transmit to the base unit. The "ECO" icon appears in the handset display when activated.

Tone Equalizer: The Handset Tone Equalizer feature clarifies the voice of the person you are talking to to produce a more natural-sounding voice. You can select "High Tone" or "Low Tone" while you are in a conversation, to see which position produces the best sound.

Handset Speakerphone: The cordless handset can double as a speakerphone for hands-free conversations. The handset is squared on the bottom, allowing you to stand it up on a table top while you talk hands-free.

Non-Slip Handset: The KX-TGA659 handset has a rubberized surface on the back panel to help prevent slipping, especially when you cradle it on your shoulder.

Headset Compatible: The handset has a 2.5mm sub-mini headset jack to allow you to plug in a headset for hands-free operation. Compatible headsets include: KX-TCA400, KX-TCA60, KX-TCA93, KX-TCA94, and KX-TCA430.

1.9" Backlit LCD: The cordless handsets feature a large, easy-to-see, backlit 1.9" LCD screen with a resolution of 103 x 65 pixels. The LCD displays Caller ID information, battery strength, Caller List, Directory, plus the Function Menu table. You can adjust the contrast of the LCD from 1-6. The language of the LCD text can be set to English or Spanish.

Large Backlit Keypad: The handset have a large, white backlit keypad for easy dialing.

Navigator Key: The 4-way Navigator key on the handset is used to navigate through menus and to select items shown on the display by pushing it up, down, left, or right.

Soft Keys: The handset has three soft keys just below the LCD, which allow you to select the feature shown directly above it on the display. Some of the soft key functions include Mute, Phonebook, Menu, and Redial.

Speed Dial Keys: The handset and base unit feature three speed dial keys, labeled A, B, and C. You can assign one phone number to each of the keys using one of the handsets. The stored numbers can be used for all registered handsets and the base unit. Above the speed dial keys on the base unit is an index card to record the names and/or phone numbers stored to the speed dial buttons.

Caller ID: This unit is compatible with Caller ID services offered by your telephone company. If you subscribe to Caller ID, the caller's name and phone number will be displayed and recorded in the handset's Caller List.

Call Waiting Caller ID: If you subscribe to Call Waiting with Caller ID, when talking on the phone as another call comes in, the second caller's name and phone number will be displayed.

Talking Caller ID: This feature lets you know who is calling without looking at the display. When the caller information is received from your Caller ID service, the handsets and base unit announce the caller's name or phone number received after each ring.

Ringer/Message Indicators: The handset has a ringer indicator LED on the top that will flash quickly whenever a call comes in. The LED flashes slowly when there's a message on the answering machine or you have a voice mail message. On the base unit, the message indicator inside the "Play" button will flash when there is a message waiting.

Caller List: The unit records information for the last 50 callers and stores this information in the Caller List. The unit can show the number of calls you missed. You can call back any number in the caller list. Once a number is in the Caller List, it can be manually or automatically edited (to add or remove area codes or prefixes), saved in the Directory, or deleted.

Call Block: The phone can be programmed to reject unwanted calls. If you subscribe to Caller ID, the unit will reject a call that comes in without a phone number, including those that are labeled "Out of area", "Private caller", or "Long distance". Calls from a phone number stored in the call block list are also rejected. Up to 30 phone numbers can be stored in the call block list. When the call is received, the unit rings for a short time while the caller is being identified. If the phone number matches an entry in the call block list, the unit sends out a busy tone to the caller, then disconnects the call.

Shared Phonebook: All handsets registered to the base unit can use the unit's phonebook. Up to 50 names and phone numbers can be stored in the phonebook. You can enter names up to 16 characters, and phone numbers up to 24 digits. A pause can be entered in the phone number if required for dialing. Each pause is stored as one digit and the pause is approximately 3.5 seconds. The directory names are sorted alphabetically. You can also assign names to one of nine groups to help you locate entries quickly and easily. Groups can also be assigned a different ringer tone to help you identify who is calling.

Phonebook Name Announcement: When caller information is received and it matches a phone number stored in the phonebook, the stored name will be announced on each handset and the base unit.

Chain Dial: You can dial a number from the phone while on a call using Chain Dial. This can be used to dial a calling card access number, dial a PIN number, etc. without having to dial it manually.

Redial List: You can review a list of the last five numbers dialed, then call any of those numbers.

Mute: This system features a Mute key on the cordless handsets. If you wish to temporarily mute the conversation, you can mute the handset so the other party cannot hear you, but you can still hear them.

Handset Locator: This feature allows you to locate a handset by paging it from the base unit. All registered handsets are paged simultaneously.

Silent Mode: You can program each handset to ring or not at your discretion. If you set a handset to Silent Mode, it will not ring when calls come in. A specific time period can be programmed ahead of time for the silent mode. Other handsets programmed to the phone are not affected, and will continue to ring when calls are received.

Intercom: This feature lets you set-up a 2-way conversation between the base and handset or between two registered handsets.

Call Transfer: Calls can be transferred from the base to the handset or from one handset to any other registered handset.

Privacy Mode: You can prevent users of other handsets from joining your conversations by engaging the Privacy Mode in the Initial Setting menu. To allow other users to join your conversation (call share), you can turn the Privacy Mode off.

Call Share: Call Share allows a second cordless handset to join an existing external call by pressing one button. Up to 4 parties can participate in a conversation using 3 extensions and the outside party.

Any Key Talk/Auto Talk: The Any Key Talk feature allows you to press any of the numeric keys, the * key, the # key, or the intercom button to answer a call. When the handset is on the charger base, the Auto Talk feature allows you to answer a call by simply picking up the handset. Auto Talk can be turned on/off in the menu.

Volume Controls: Both the base unit and handsets have dedicated volume buttons to make it easy to adjust volume levels. You can choose from four levels when holding the handset to your ear, and six levels for the speakerphone.

Ringer Options: You can select one of six ringer volume settings or Off. You can also choose between five ring tones and five ring melodies.

Temporary Tone Dialing: If you are using a pulse dialing system, you can temporarily switch to tone dialing to enter numbers for answering services, electronic banking services, company phone directories, etc. When you hang up, the mode switches back to pulse dialing.

Flash Key: If you have the Call Waiting service, you can use the flash key to put the first call on hold, allowing you to answer a second incoming call. You can adjust the length of the flash time if necessary.

Alarm: On the handset, you can set an alarm to sound for three minutes on a one-time or daily basis. With the date and time programmed into the phone, you can enter a desired time for the alarm to sound. Using a different ringer tone from the one used for outside calls is recommended.

Belt Clip: The included belt clip can be attached to the back of the cordless handset so that you can hook it onto your belt.

Security: A handset cannot operate unless it is registered with the base unit.

Battery Information: The phone comes with four "AAA" rechargeable Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries, two for each handset. A Ni-MH battery doesn't develop the "memory" effect like many Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cad) rechargeable batteries.

  • Initial Charge Time: 7 hours
  • Battery Talk Time: up to 13 hours continuous
  • Battery Standby Time: up to 11 days

Wall Mounting: The base unit and battery charger for the additional handsets can be placed on a desk or table, or can be wall mounted. The base unit comes with a wall-mounting bracket that can attach it to a standard telephone wall mount jack. There are also two keyhole slots for wall mounting. The handset battery charger also has two similar keyhole slots.

Answering System Features

Total Recording Time: The total time for recording is approximately 18 minutes for all messages (including greeting). A maximum of 64 messages can be recorded. All messages are saved until you delete them. When the memory is full, an indicator on the base unit flashes rapidly, "Messages Full" is shown on the handset display, and, if you use the pre-recorded greeting message, the unit automatically switches to another pre-recorded greeting that asks callers to call again later.

Caller's Recording Time: You can select 1 minute or 3 minutes for recording incoming messages. Individual messages can be played back and erased from the base unit or the handsets.

Greetings: You can record a personal greeting of up to 2 minutes. The unit also comes with 2 pre-recorded messages; one used when the unit has no available recording time, and one used when a message will be recorded.

Number of Rings: You can set the number of rings before the answering system answers the call. Your choices are 2 to 7 rings, or Toll Saver. When set to Toll Saver, the unit will answer on the second ring when there is at least one new message, or on the fifth ring when there are no new messages. This allows you to save on toll charges for the call by hanging up when you hear the third ring, knowing there are no messages.

Call Screening: You can listen to an incoming message as the caller leaves it using the handset's speaker.

Voice Day/Time Stamp: With each message the unit announces the day and time the message was recorded.

Message Alert: When a new message has been received, the message indicator on the base unit will flash, and "New Message" is displayed on the handsets' display.

Remote Operation: You can operate the Answering System from any touch-tone phone. The system is protected by a three-digit remote code to prevent unauthorized access. You can either use the unit's voice prompts or direct commands by pressing keys. During remote operation, you can perform the following functions:

  • Playback all messages or playback new messages only
  • Repeat or skip a message
  • Play the greeting
  • Record a new greeting
  • Erase currently playing message or all messages
  • Turn the answering system on or off

Regarding Voice Mail Services: The KX-TG6592 will integrate with your telephone company's voice mail service to make it easier to retrieve your messages. If you wish to use the Voice Mail service, you should turn off the phone's answering system. If you choose to use the phone's answering system, you should set the unit's ring count so that the unit answers calls before the Voice Mail service does. This may involve changing the number of rings of the Voice Mail service. When you receive a new Voice Mail message, the telephone company sends special tones to alert you that a new message is available. The KX-TG6592 detects these tones, causing the message indicator on the handset to flash slowly, and by displaying "New Voice Mail" in the LCD. You can program your Voice Mail access number (along with your password and any necessary pauses) so you can dial it automatically to retrieve your messages.
