Our take on the Panasonic HDC-TM900

Most cams use a single image sensor, but this Panasonic uses one for each of the three primary colors — reg, green, and blue. Your movies will glow with rich, vibrant tones, from the deep oranges and reds of a sunset, to the crystal-clear blues of Caribbean waters. A precise Leica Dicomar lens gives you detailed widescreen video and still photos that'll perfectly match the shape of your HDTV's screen without stretching or distorting the picture. And a built-in zoom microphone with Dolby® Digital surround sound recording adds even more realism to your videos.

Superb, true-to-life videos that you'll want to watch again and again

When you want to preserve life's most important moments — like your wedding or your son's first birthday — then you can't go wrong with Panasonic's HDC-TM900 camcorder. It's packed with advanced imaging technology, from its three image sensors that help you capture more lifelike colors, all the way to its 3D-ready image processor, which lets you create your own 3D movies using an optional lens. With the 'TM900, it's easy to record smooth videos that are bursting with vivid details. Plus, you can save your video and photos straight to the cam's 32GB built-in memory, which can hold up to 13 hours of video, or to an optional SD memory card.

Three image sensors for vibrant home movies

Most cams use a single image sensor, but this Panasonic uses one for each of the three primary colors — reg, green, and blue. Your movies will glow with rich, vibrant tones, from the deep oranges and reds of a sunset, to the crystal-clear blues of Caribbean waters. A precise Leica Dicomar lens gives you detailed widescreen video and still photos that'll perfectly match the shape of your HDTV's screen without stretching or distorting the picture. And a built-in zoom microphone with Dolby® Digital surround sound recording adds even more realism to your videos.

Full high-definition recording for smoother video

Unlike some other HD cams, the 'TM900 records video in "Full HD" 1080 progressive resolution. This means the video you record with this cam will look smooth and have lots of details with no traces of flicker or jagged edges. It also means your wedding or honeymoon video will look simply gorgeous on your HDTV when you get home. Just add an optional HDMI cable and you'll be all set.

To 3D or not to 3D?

Are you thinking you may want to switch to a 3D camcorder in the future, but aren't sure about it now? The 'TM900 has you covered. Just add on the optional 3D video conversion lens (shown attached at right) and you can start shooting dramatic-looking 3D video. How is this possible? The additional lens actually contains two lenses that simultaneously record left and right images, which are then stored onto the 'TM900's memory thanks to the powerful internal processor. All you have to do is hook the cam up to your compatible 3D HDTV, put on your 3D glasses, and enjoy the show!

Dial in perfect shots with the manual control ring

The 'TM900 features a manual control ring on the barrel of the lens that lets you adjust the zoom, focus, and aperture, for creative, hands-on filming. This cam also uses a hybrid optical image stabilization that corrects for a wider range of hand-shake using both optical and digital stabilization. It makes it possible to record more professional-looking close-ups that won't induce nausea when you show your video off to friends and family at home. You can also easily tweak settings on the large, 3-1/2" touchpanel LCD. Or use the electronic viewfinder to get a better view of your images in direct sunlight. Plus, the accessory shoe on the side of the cam lets you add on an external microphone or video light to give your videos a more professional feel.

Easy shooting in any situation

This cam's powerful Intelligent Auto sensor accurately assesses your shooting conditions and automatically chooses the settings that'll help you get the best video possible. You won't have to bother with the focus or contrast — the cam will do it for you. It'll even automatically detect any faces in your scene, and follow them wherever they move throughout your frame. It makes capturing video of your child blowing out his birthday candles or your spouse singing karaoke that much easier.

    TM900 shortcomings

JoeG from Fort Pierce, FL on 7/29/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this cam based on many reviews. Unfortunately, nobody explained the true faults of this cam. It is very annoying not to have an external battery charger-not thinking of customer. They placed the flash, for the camera function, in the lens barrel. Therefore, if you have any filters attached, they must be removed for dark conditions. No ring provided to attach a shoulder strap and a cheap looking gripper. The picture quality and menus are very good. However, if you have to zoom, and do not have a tripod-you are in trouble. It is extremely difficult to zoom from hand held positions-unlike my old PV GS500 cam. The light weight is no help here. Pressing the stop rec. button is shake producing. The remote works quite well, if conditions allow (indoors only) for the setup, including tripod. However, many shooting situations do not allow this luxury. Had I know this, I would have saved a little more and bought the Canon cam. Also, battery life is very short on their batteries and they want a lot of money for a long lasting one-what barbarity! All vendors are presently out of external battery chargers as of this date. Crutchfield is an excellent vendor and this review is no reflection of Crutchfield.

    General Features

Recording Media: The Panasonic HDR-TM900 allows you to record video and still images on the 32 GB built-in memory, or on optional SD/SDHC/SDXC cards. The unit is compatible with SD Memory cards from 512MB to 2GB, SDHC Memory cards from 4GB to 32GB, and SDXC Memory cards from 48GB to 64GB. SD cards with a Speed Class Rating of 4 or higher are recommended.

3.5" LCD Touch Screen: The 3.5" (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The 460,000-dot LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp and detailed images for monitoring or playback. Mirror mode allows you to view a mirror-image of the subject you are shooting in the LCD screen when the screen is rotated 180 degrees, but the image will be normal when recorded. In addition, the touch screen LCD allows you to navigate through the menu system.

Viewfinder: In addition to the 3.5" LCD screen, the TM900 has a 0.24" electronic viewfinder (EVF) with approximately 263,000 dots. The viewfinder has an eyepiece corrector dial (diopter) to adjust the image to your personal eyesight.

Recording Formats: This camera captures video in the following formats:

    • 1080/60p: The 1080/60p (1980 x 1080/60 progressive) recording mode is the highest quality recording mode for this camcorder. The scenes recorded in 1080/60p can be saved or played back by the camcorder or using the supplied HD Writer AE 3.0 software.
    • MPEG-4 AVC/H.264: This recording format, commonly known as AVCHD, can record high definition quality images. It is suitable for viewing on a large format TV or for saving to a disc.
    • iFrame: The iFrame format is suitable for playing back or edition on a Mac (Movie'11). Using Movie'11, iFrame motion pictures can be imported faster than AVCHD, and the imported file size is smaller than that of AVCHD.

Image Sensor: The TM900 uses the 3MOS sensor, consisting of three separate 1/4.1" sensors of 3.05 megapixels each. The 3MOS sensor splits the light information captured by the lens into the three primary colors (red, green, and blue), and processes each with its own individual sensor. This reduces light loss compared to the 1MOS sensor, and renders the images with superb color and detail. The TM900 has a total pixel count of 9,150,000, with 7,590,000 effective pixels for recording 16:9 high definition video and 16:9 still images, 6,960,000 pixels for 4:3 aspect ratio still images, and 7,890,000 pixels for 3:2 still images.

Lens: This camera features a bright Leica Dicomar F1.5-F2.8 lens with a 12x optical zoom and Auto Iris. The lens' 35mm film camera equivalent focal length is as follows:

    • Motion Pictures: 35mm to 420 mm (16:9)
    • Still Images: 38.8 mm to 466 mm (4:3), 35.7mm to 428 mm (3:2), 35 mm to 420 mm (16:9)

Intelligent Zoom: The camcorder has an Intelligent Zoom (i.Zoom) function that goes up to 20x while maintaining high definition picture quality. Intelligent Resolution technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving image sharpness.

Extra Optical Zoom: In Still Picture Recording Mode, you can achieve a zoom ratio of up to 50x without degrading the picture quality. When the picture size is set to less than 5M, the camcorder uses the entire 5M area and crops the picture to the center to gain the additional zoom capability. The Extra Optical Zoom is as follows:

Picture Size Aspect Ratio Extra Optical Zoom
    12.2M: 4032 x 3024 4:3 Not available
    7.7M: 3200 x 2400 13.2x
    4.9M: 2560 x 1920 16.5x
    0.3M: 640 x 480 25x
    14.2M: 4608 x 3072 3:2 Not available
    8.6M: 3600 x 2400 13.2x
    5.5M: 2880 x 1920 16.5x
    13.3M: 4864 x 2736 16:9 Not available
    8.3M: 3840 x 2160 13.2x
    5.3M: 3072 x 1728 16.5x

Digital Zoom: In addition to the 12x optical zoom, the camcorder has a selectable 30x or 700x (total) digital zoom. Because the picture is processed digitally, the picture quality deteriorates the more you zoom in. The power zoom lever can be moved slightly for a slow zoom, or moved further for a faster zoom.

Optional 3D Conversion Lens: With the optional VW-CLT1 3D Conversion Lens (item #133VWCLT1), you can record 3D video. The lens mounts to the camcorder's 46mm filter thread. The lens records side-by-side images, which when viewed on a 3D-capable TV, appears as a 3D image. You can insert the SD memory card containing the 3D images into the TV's SD card slot, or you can connect the camcorder to the TV via HDMI cable, for viewing the 3D images on your 3D-capable TV.

Note: The 3D TV must be compatible with side-by-side-type 3D.

Crystal Engine PRO: The TM900 features Crystal Engine PRO processing to turn the huge amount of data into full HD images. It produces smooth, high-resolution zoom shots even beyond the optical zooming range.

Intelligent Auto Mode: The Intelligent Auto (iA) mode automatically sets the shooting mode that is appropriate for the condition when you simply point the unit to what you want to record. Intelligent Auto Modes include:

    • Portrait: Faces are detected and focused automatically, and brightness is adjusted to make people stand out against the background
    • Scenery: the whole landscape will be recorded vividly without whiting out the background sky, which may be very bright
    • Spotlight: improved quality when subject is brightly illuminated (motion picture recording only)
    • Low Light: for dark scenes, such as at dusk (motion picture recording only)
    • Night Portrait: subject and background are recorded with near real-life brightness (still picture recording only)
    • Night Scenery: record night scenery vividly by slowing the shutter speed (still picture recording only)
    • Macro: recording at very close proximity to the object of recording (still picture recording only)
    • Normal: contrast adjusted automatically for clear images

Hybrid O.I.S.: Panasonic's Hybrid O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) helps suppress the effects of hand-shake as you shoot movies and still images. Hybrid O.I.S. is a combination of optical and electronic image stabilization systems. The Hybrid O.I.S. feature can be turned on or off for motion picture recording. You can select from two levels of stabilization (or off) for still picture recording.

Face Framing: When Face Framing is activated, the camcorder will recognize up to 15 human faces, and a "frame" appears around each face in the LCD screen. The camcorder sets the focus and brightness on the faces in the scene. Larger faces and faces nearer to the center of the screen take preference over the others. You can register the faces of particular persons, giving them priority focusing and displaying their names when they are recognized by the camcorder.

AF/AE Tracking: The TM900 allows you to set the focus and exposure to the subject by touching the subject on the touch screen. The focus and exposure will keep following the subject automatically, even if it moves (Dynamic Tracking).

Illumination Requirements: The camera records video and photos in normal mode at a standard illumination of 1400 lx. You can record at 1.6 lx in the Low Light mode and approximately 1 lx in the Color Night Record mode.

White Balance Adjustment: You can set the color balance to the brightness of the recording environment using the following methods:

    • Auto: The white balance is adjusted automatically
    • Sunny Mode: for recording outdoors under a clear sky
    • Cloudy Mode: for recording outdoors under a cloudy sky
    • Indoor Mode 1: for recording indoors under incandescent lights and halogen lamps
    • Indoor Mode 2: for recording indoors under color fluorescent lamps or sodium lamps
    • Manual: You can manually set the white balance using a white card or paper.

Manual Exposure: When automatic exposure settings fail to give you the images you desire, you can manually set the shutter speed and the iris/gain values. When recording movies, the Shutter Speed can be set between 1/60 and 1/8000 (1/30-1/8000 in Auto Slow Shutter mode). For still images, the shutter speed is set between 1/2 and 1/2000. The Iris/Gain value can be set between F16 and F1.7 (0 dB to 18 dB).

Multi Manual Ring: The TM900's Multi Manual Ring, located near the lens, gives you easy, fingertip control over several functions, when recording in the Manual mode. On the LCD touch screen, you can select Focus, White Balance, Manual Shutter Speed, or Iris Adjustment, then turn the Multi Manual Ring to make your adjustments. When not in the Manual Mode, you can use the ring for precise control as you zoom in and out. The ring is a much more intuitive, comfortable, and user-friendly process than using the menu screen.

Focus Modes: The TM900 focuses automatically for most situations. When auto focus doesn't work, you can switch to Manual Focus and use the multi manual ring to manually focus on the subject.

Audio Recording: The camcorder is equipped with a built-in 5.1-channel microphone. You can set the microphone to record in Surround (5.1-channel) or in stereo (using the two forward-facing microphones). You can also select Zoom Mic to interlock the directivity of the microphone with the zoom operation, or Focus Mic to enhance the audio near the front and center of the unit. If an external mic is used, the camcorder will record in stereo.

Shoe Adaptor: The supplied Shoe Adaptor allows you to attach accessories, such as an optional video light or external microphone. The Shoe Adaptor slides into a slot on the side of the camcorder. It does not supply power or control signals to the attached accessory. It is simply a means to attach the accessory.

Built-in Flash: The TM900 has a built-in flash to help illuminate your subject in low-light situations. It has a range of approximately 3.3' to 8.2'. The camcorder automatically determines if the flash is necessary. The intensity of the flash can also be set to one of three levels. Using the flash fixes the shutter speed to 1/500 or slower.

    Video Camera Features

HD Video Recording: The TM900 records high definition motion images at a 1920 x 1080 resolution onto the built-in 32 GB memory or an inserted SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card. The camera records audio in Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio using the built-in microphone. If the video is going to be uploaded to a Mac, it is recommended that it be recorded in the iFrame format with 2-channel AAC audio (960 x 540 resolution).

Digital Cinema Color: In any mode except in iFrame, you can record more realistic colors by switching to Digital Cinema Color. This mode uses x.v.Color technology with a wider color gamut than standard modes. Video recorded in Digital Cinema Color must be played back on a TV that is compatible with x.v.Color (xvYCC format) via an HDMI cable.

Recording Capacity: The built-in memory and SD/SDHC/SDXC cards have the following capacity at each recording mode:

Quick Start: The camera will go into standby mode if you close the LCD monitor or push in the viewfinder while the unit is powered on. When the LCD monitor is reopened or the viewfinder is extended, the unit resumes recording mode/pause in approximately 0.6 seconds, allowing you to start recording almost immediately.

Pre-Rec: The Pre-Rec mode allows recording of pictures and sound to start approximately 3 seconds before the start/stop button is pressed. This helps prevent you from missing a shot.

Fader: When you start recording, the image and audio will gradually appear, and when you pause or stop recording, the image/audio gradually disappear. You can select a black or white fader, or turn off the fade mode altogether.

Relay Recording: When relay recording is activated, the camcorder will automatically begin recording video to an inserted SD card when the built-in memory is full. When finished recording, the relay-recorded scenes can be combined into one scene on the SD card.

Playback Modes: During playback, you can choose the following operations: Play/pause, rewind, fast forward, stop, skip forward, skip backward, slow-motion, and frame-by-frame. Audio will only be heard during normal playback.
