JL Audio designed their W3v3 subwoofers to deliver powerful, accurate bass with a medium-power amplifier. Their extensive motor assembly research resulted in a design that ensures smooth, precise cone movement at any power level. Exclusive cooling features shunt heat away from the sub's internal motor structure for long term durability and reduced distortion. The W3v3 sub works well in a sealed or ported enclosure.
The 12W3v3-4 subwoofer boasts a 12" mineral-filled polypropylene cone with a distinctive metallic JL Audio medallion. A patented design eases the stress felt by the rubber surround during cone movement, for increased reliability and consistent bass output. The removable, customizable trim ring accepts optional JL Audio grilles, and can be painted to enhance your installation.
To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 375 and 750 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

New technology is awesome.
I love these subs!!! I have 2 in a ported box with a 2500 watt Planet Audio amp in my clk 320 and they hit so hard. My amp isn't turned up too high and gives my w3s an amazing and hard quality sound. Fantastic job JL!!
Running 2 of these in a ported box tuned at 35 hertz with only 500 watts @2ohms from the sub channel on a RD900/5....honestly more watts would be nice just so i could see what it could do but its louder than ones ears can tollerate for longer than minute as is. I was planning on going to dedicated amps for components/drivers but after testing it....its really not needed...if you are running sealed you would def need more power but not with 4 cubes ported
Pros: Sounds awsome
Cons: Makes sundown look bad
I was looking up info on some audio information and found the most useful knowledge here.
Top notch quality, easy install. Using in my 2012 Crownline 18ss. Built a sealed box, line-x'd it, powered with the JL 700/5 marine amp. Very impressed with the punch and clean deep tone!!! So many sounds we've been missing in our music, now I never want to get out of my boat!!!
Pros: Easy install, looks awesome.
Ok great replacement for my old JL Sub after my son burnt out one of the DVC in it. That JL Sub lasted about 13 yrs. I bought this new Sub to replace it in the original custom sealed box that was made for 02 Accord back in the day from Good Guys store that went out of business years ago so I had no clue of the box size. Other than I know the guy when he made the box was using software to get the correct size. With that said I bought this sub since it was the same model number except a newer version and it has only the single voice coil not the Duel Voice Coil (DVC). The car hits a lot better than before and its still running my old 5ch Alpine amp MRV-F450 that has been powering the system at 4ohms. Since my amp is a little over 13yrs old its not capable of running the sub at 2ohms so the new sub worked flawlessly. Don't cheap out and buy quality and it will last
Pros: Cost was very reasonable, great sound, tight accurate bass in a sealed box. also bought the mesh push on grills in order to dress it up some.
Cons: like anything else would be nice if it was free lol
Best subs I ever owned,I have 2 of these in a sealed box ,got a 1200 watt JL slash series amp ,had to turn the gain down a lot my amp is a little too much power for these but hit hard and clean , hear the music the way it is supposed to sound
Pros: good quality subwoofers
Cons: says 500 watts RMS online but on the directions that come with the sub it says to run these subs at 300 watts, they recommend it
Everything about this sub is high quality, the sound, the frequency response, and the clean look. I bought this sub because I wanted high-quality sound and a low frequency response and have been pleased. Plus I enjoy that the sub doesn't have tacky graphics or a look to it, it looks professional.
Pros: Quality sound and frequency response Clean and professional look
I have two of these powered by a jl 500/1 and they sound amazing. I would definitely recommend these to anybody looking for a hard hitting sub with good sound quality.
Pros: Hit hard. Great sound quality. Look good.
I read through some of these reviews and some people weren't getting good results . You have to match everything for them to sound excellent! Are u using a proper box and amp? These substances are tremendous. I was disappointed too when I first got them. I went through about 3 boxes. The bass waves were being cancelled by each other when I'd turn it up. Ihad a custom box made and it made these subs come alive! So be sure your subs have the right amp and box and u won't be disappointed! My amp is 1000w rms..my box was made by Dave the box guy. Do your research with boxes and amps and you will be pleased! Trust me when I tell you that if u have the wrong amp or box you won't get your money from these subs! Box and amp are everything!!!
Pros: Great quality sound. With the right set up they get pretty low. They do hit hard
Cons: I would like them to hit lower but it's not the subs fault because they're not rated below 22 Hz so it's really not a con per se
If you want clean deep bass, get one of these in a sealed box. If you want it to be loud, add another in a a sealed box. The biggest mistake I see is under powering subs by people thinking there amp is pushing out 1200 watts. But if your sub/speaker is 4 ohm, you are looking at a few hundred watts rms from the amp, not the max 1200W. If your going to run these subs you must have a proper higher end amp to run one. I'm running a JL Audio JX1000/1D with just one of these subs in a sealed box. The bass is clean, clear, and it hits very hard. It's great for any type of music. Just because this amp has 1000 in the model doesn't mean you will get it. At 14.4 volts it says it will do 1000 watt output but only at 1 ohm. Seeing how only a handful of amps are capable of handling that I am looking at my setup. One 4 ohm woofer so that would be 500 watts rms for one woofer. if I had two subs at 4 ohms, that would be 750 watts from the amp if it was in a parallel circuit. Divide that by two for two subs for 375 watts for each sub. Even though having two subs is less power to them individually. Its louder since there is more surface area movement from the woofers. So long story short. Don't be selling these subs short just because your amplified setup is no where close to where it should be. A lower power amp with low power sub equals not bad quality. the same low powered amp with higher end sub that demands more power equals a huge let down.
Pros: Response time for hitting each note. Sound Quality. Deep smooth ever lasting bass. Clean and clear. Bends well with mids and highs so you can't tell the bass is coming from a certain location. Not over powering but enough to give you deep rich quality low notes.
Cons: You get what you pay for and this will help you achieve the near pure sound as it should be heard.
Had this sub powered by a Kenwood KAC-7202 until it was stolen, it was the best system I had of many. At the time I bought it because it was on sale and was tired of the big box store cheapo specials and remembered my friend having a 10w0 back high school that was really good. Please note, I had this set up only a few months before someone broke into my car and stole it so I did not rate build quality.
Pros: smooth design, clear musical tones, strong bass
Cons: at the high end for a budget oriented system, but you may only need one subwoofer.
I am running two of these 4 ohm subs with a JL Audio XD 600/1 amp. I started with just one of these subs but upgraded to two very shortly after to get it a little louder and it made a HUGE difference. This is without a doubt the best setup I have ever had in my car. I have been through many different brands of amps and subs and JL Audio is top notch! They may not look like much but they hit HARD and extremely CLEAN! They are pretty pricey but you definitely get what you pay for with this sub!
Pros: SPL and SQ
Cons: Pricey but still worth it.
The best quality sub I have heard in an automobile. I installed double 12 alpines in my cousins car and it rocked. I installed this sub in my sons hummer in a single box. It blows away the double alpine in sound quality. Yes it rattles your seat and you can feel it in the back of you neck, but the big difference is in the smooth transition between every bass note and sound. I have two def tech subs in my house. This sounds better than those.
Pros: High wattage capacity Quality is excellent True frequency response without distortion
I bought one of these as an open box item. Anyone who says the sound quality of this sub is less than outstanding is using it wrong, it's that simple. I have one sub in a 1.25 cubic foot sealed box, in the trunk of a sedan, firing through the cargo opening between the rear seats, crossed over at 22hz to 64hz with 24db slopes, powered with an Alpine 300W M500 mono amp. Front stage is a DLS Gothia 6.3, 45hz and up powered by two Alpine F300's. Processing is an Alpine H800. The sub kicks butt. It is as tight and accurate as just about anything i've heard in this price range. And it has a super cool cone material - it looks awesome pumping away through the cargo hole. I'm glad i didn't sacrafice the room for two of them because it's not needed. This is a high end woofer. If you don't put it in a high end system and power it and tune it properly, you won't experience the full benefit.
Pros: looks awesome. sound is super tight.
Cons: give it a week to break in. after a week it sounded way tighter.
These subs hit hard and the quality of sound is outstanding.
These subs slam! I bought two of these in a ported box running at 675 watts rms at being powered by an infinity reference series amplifier.
Pros: These sound great with any music at the proper tuning my rear window flexes Cant turn them up all the way they are to loud for me! They provide the extra punch to rock songs and rap it makes my trunk bounce
i went from a w0 10' to 12'w3v3 and its been the worst mistake of my life i cannont beleive how weak it is and how bad it sounds i cannont phase it to get a clear sound from it and refuses to pound at all overall this was a waste of my time/money/and excitement i hate this speaker and now jl audio and i was there biggest fan
I just bought these subs and let me tell you glad I did! great sound and really pound. I switched from the rockford fosgate p3's. If your looking for quality sound....well you found it! JL all the way!
I just Bought My Second One, These Subs are the absolute best 12 in their price range, Check That......Subs that cost twice as much will be hard pressed to keep up with these super tight monsters.
this is amazing sub i have one hook up to a amp bridge sitting in a 99 bucik regal. it hits so hard that i got the bass knob on 0. sold on JL never buy any thing beside JL from now on.
I have two of these installed in a modified box under the back seat of a 2005 Dodge Ram Quad cab, each woofer has about .64 cubic feet and was suggested to have about .68. They are replacing 2 Kenwood shallow mounts. Let me tell you these things sound great. They sound better than the Kenwoods and they aren't even broken in yet. I can't wait until they are broke in. These are a good buy and I am glad I bought them.
This subwoofer is amazing. The only time I have had one 12" woofer be much louder than this one is when I ran a 6 cu ft box ported at 45 hz with 1,200 watt rms amp, a deep cycle battery up front and in the the trunk, and 3 1 faret caps. That was 7 years ago, and it was much louder than this. But its the only time I have had 1 12 get really to much louder. HERE'S THE KEY POINT, I have done louder with 1 12 in my past, a few times, and some that where not strictly for competition, so they sounded ok, but I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY SINGLE 12' WOOFER GET SO LOUD, AND STAY SO CLEAN! This sub sounds excellent. Definitely go with 1, build the right box, and give it the power it deserves. You'll spend less and be happier (I think) than if you go with two and don't power them or box them right. JL makes a box for this, and it sounds great! In the trunk of a car, in JL's box, louder (and just as clean or cleaner) than a buddy running 2 Fosgate P1S412 in a ported box in a new Ford SUV off of a P300-1. I run my JL with a T400-2
These subwoofers are great I would highly recommend this subwoofer and JL audio in general they stand by their products and just overall are a good buy. Of course your going to pay a little more but the sound Im getting from one of these powered by a 500 watt JL audio amp is incredible.
I bought these to replace a pair of RF HE2 12's and all I can say is WOW!! I put them in the custom sealed box i built for my tundra and they aren't even broken in yet and they are amazing. The are so efficiant that I could turn my gains down and the amp is drawing less power so my Infinity mids and highs sound better. I turned the gains up on my crossover up for the mids and highs and it is so much louder and more crisp. The best thing is they still keep up with the infinitys. I'm running them at around 500 rms each and the infinity's @ 100watts rms each with a 5 farad cap and it is awsome. I've always been true to rockford Fosgate but not any more. These make any system sound perfect. The lows sound great and quick beats are sooo tight. They sound great with any music.
I have one of these subs in a 1.5 cu ft sealed enclosure powered by a JL Audio 1/250 slash amp in my 2005 Nissan 350Z. This is the best sounding subwoofer I have ever heard. I wasnt sure 250 watts was going to be enough but I was dead wrong. It hits so hard and so tight it put a huge smile on my face. My friends told me that a 12" sub would sound loose anjd heavy but they ate those words when they heard it. I will never use anything smaller than a 12 again! I previously had a Type-R 10 in it on the same amp and it sounded great but it just wasnt enough. This sub was a huge upgrade and the difference flat blew me away. It was three times as loud and hit 3 times harder. It gave a whole new meaning to SQ. I have never heard a big subwoofer hit so fast and tight! It definitly likes a lot of air space but its very efficient!
i have this as well as several other subs. These are not the loudest out there and many experts say that as well, but these are some of the most accurate subs on the market and they are very durable and long lasting. They are also under rated which JL publically admitted. these can handle 1000 watts easily. This sub has a very, very slight "flutter" noise to it compared to its cheaper cousin the W1v2. its not too noticable and cant find a cause. their not the prettiest subs to look at but are very well engineered. Like any sub, the real secret is in your install setup and the box its in, not the sub itself. dont just put this in any q logic box either, they are too universal and accomodate mediocrocity from all subs rather than tailor made for each one. but buy/build a proper box as recommended by JL be it sealed or ported since thats the size the sub specs will require for best sound. stuff very loosely with poly fill to smooth out the bass and less distortion. If going sealed, use vinyl rubber weather seal around the lip of the sub to guarantee air tight fit. All edges inside box must be sealed. A proper air tight sub when pressed will be very firm and retract instantly. If it sinks or retracts slowly, then you have an air leak somewhere. I coat inside of my boxes with truck bed liner and use weather sealing you can get from any hardware store. Many people in general buy cheap wires, an over-rated amp and a q logic box and think its good cause they dont know better.
Well, before this sub i had a 10 in kicker comp vr... i decided to be cheap and instead of buying or building a box that is meant for a 12in i just cut the hole bigger in the box that housed the 10in.. I was a little ticked at first because the w3 wouldnt hit the lows the same way the kicker comp vr did.. However. yesterday I got a new box for the w3.. a q-logic bandpass box.. much happier with this sub now. turned the center frequency down to 23 on the jl 500/1v2 amp and it pounds hard.. cant even see clearly out of the rearview mirror while driving. If you do get this sub i would suggest getting a bandpass box.. ive heard it in a ported and a sealed and the bandpass by far sounds much better
I have 2 of these subs in a sealed enclosure, each receives 250+ watts apiece. One from the sub channel of a 500/5 and the other from a 250/1. These are loud subs, they got me a ticket but they aren't super deep, hence the 4 of 5 rating. These definitely rattle the mirrors but won't jiggle your innards. I will try a custom vented enclosure in the future to see what these are really capable of.
I installed this JL w3v3 in my 2001 z24 and it sounds great. I only have a small amp and only one 12 sub, and it hits very hard for only one. Great buy
I have 2 12W3V3 subs in a sealed box pushed by Kenwood KAC-8103D sounds great. Very accurate, deep, clean bass. I got them hooked up in a 93' T-bird, you can hear me comin blocks away. I don't even have the bass boost on that high. For the price, these are great. I lookin to upgrade to 12w6 soon. I love JL Audio!

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.
Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.
Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.
Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer comes with a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase optional grille mesh inserts which are specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring.
Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.125 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 23" W x 14" H x 9.25" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)
Recommended Ported Box Volume: The ported box size recommended by JL Audio is 1.75 cu/ft. A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 29" W x 14" H x 12.625" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, you should subtract 1/4" from each dimension.) A slot port is recommended with the following dimensions:

Great subs!!![ Charles Dec 20, 2015 ]
You have to match ohms, impedance and power from the amp to the sub. A 4 ohm sub needs to be powered by a 4 ohm amp, whether bridged or not. The ohms must match. Then you need enough power from the amp to move that sub. Find out the rms power of the amp, and max power the sub cab handle. The closer the better... it's math.[ JONATHAN Oct 17, 2017 ]
It should sound better. With my experience more space is better. Less is definitely bad.[ Shaun Aug 12, 2017 ]
Sealed boxes create deeper sound and are not punchy like ported boxes. I have a sealed box for my single 12w3v3. This sub pounds, it pounds really hard. I think you'll be fine with a little more air space. Just adjust the impedance and gain to maximize the subs potential. I actually have to lower my gain because the sub is hitting so hard, my head hurts I had an older version of this sub, the new one blows it away. The keys are to get the ohms, impedance and gain perfectly aligned with your amp.[ JONATHAN Aug 12, 2017 ]
Usually the required space for a subwoofer will yield the best sound or at least the design that the manufacturer is willing to warrant. Depending on the type of music you listen to, a ported box will give you more volume and vibration inside the car for hip hop, pop and even jazz. If you listen to instrumental, some types of rock, live sounds then a sealed box will give you more accurate, true bass.[ Ricardo Aug 12, 2017 ]
I have a JL Audio factory built box that is the exact manufacture specifications and it shakes the earth. I have 2 subs being powered by a Rockford fosgate T-1000 and they hit hard enough to have pulverized my car. I've had only one sub going before and that sounds loud and clean but definitely not earth shattering like two. So my advice to to is if your box is built to specs then you either don't have a good enough amp or your taste in bass requires 2 subs. 300 watts seems like a lot but if it's not a high end brand that may be only peak watts not RMS. 12W3s are crazy power hungry and can easily handle 500 watts each if not more.[ KYLE Apr 18, 2017 ]
I have 2 of these in a sealed box with a volume of .95 cubic feet per sub. (The enclosures are separated within the box) they are being powered with 600w to each sub and sound fine.[ william Apr 18, 2017 ]
I have a 1.3 cube box per sub and a 1000 watt amp going to 2 12 w3 and it pounds hard, check your gain on your amp you might go to a bigger amp or a smaller amp keep them subs under 1.75 cubes and you should be ok at 300 watts.[ TOM Apr 18, 2017 ]
I prefer ported boxes for my 12" and 10" subwoofers because they sound louder. Sealed boxes are good for more precise bass, depending on the type of music of choice. My My 12" ported box is 1.6 cu ft. Hope this helps.[ Ricardo Apr 17, 2017 ]

if your amp is 2 ohm stable then wire the subs in parrell by connecting + to + then to the + on amp then the same - to - then - on amp there are some great diagams under subwoofer on crutchfields site.http://images.crutchfieldonline.com/ca/learningcenter/car/subwoofer_wiring/2SVC_4-ohm_mono.jpg [ Jack Sep 14, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The JL Audio 12W3v3-4 can work in either a ported or sealed box. The type of box you use is based on what you're looking for in terms of sound quality. A ported box is going to give you deeper, louder bass while a sealed box provides more of a tight, accurate bass response. In general ported boxes do need to be larger, so if you're limited in terms of space you may want to go with a sealed box!If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy Jul 11, 2014 ] Staff
