Overview

Our take on the JL Audio 12W6v3-D4

JL Audio's celebrated W6v3 subwoofers deliver knockout low end with incredible accuracy. The 12W6v3-D4 12" subwoofer uses a tough, mineral-filled polypropylene cone that offers incredible strength without the added bulk that can slow woofer response. JL Audio conducted extensive research to develop a motor structure that operates efficiently and precisely, so this sub can deliver powerful, reliable bass while handling up to 600 watts RMS. Exclusive cone-bonding assemblies, advanced cooling systems, and a highly stable spider attachment enhance reliability and promote long performance life.

Bass that means business

Precision-crafted low end

The sub's solid cast-alloy basket allows your W6v3 sub to handle big-time power without any distortion-causing flexing. A sophisticated suspension system promotes linear cone movement for greater accuracy. The simple terminal jumper wiring system allows you to set the subwoofer's impedance to draw maximum power from your amplifier, or to design a multi-sub setup.

Get the sound and look you want

The elegant JL Audio medallion on the front shows the competition you mean business. Go for a special look with the removable black trim ring, which can be painted to match your installation theme. The 12W6v3-D4 works best in a compact enclosure, so you can get great bass in some tight places.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 450 and 900 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

It's awesome. Zero distortion.

Features

Dual Voice Coils: Due to the 12W6v3-D4's dual 4 ohm voice coils, the subwoofer can be configured as a 2-ohm (voice coils wired in parallel) or 8-ohm (voice coils wired in series) driver. The included jumper wires allow easy adjustment from one configuration to the other (the factory jumper position is 2-ohm).

Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method of improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, the 12W6v3-D4 motor remains linear over a long excursion range, and also maintains a stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.

Pole-Vent Airflow Control (PVAC): The bullet-shaped structure inside the pole-vent directs airflow and increases air velocity to effectively reduce voice coil temperature, leading to improved fidelity and reliability.

Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.

Elevated Frame Cooling System: The elevated frame design of the 12W6v3-D4 delivers cool air through slots directly above the top-plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.

Customizable Trim Ring: The woofer has a removable ring made of black ABS plastic which can be painted to match the installation theme and create a personalized look. You can purchase an optional mesh grille insert specifically designed to fit into the inner diameter of the trim ring (item number 136SGR126, sold separately).

Engineered Lead Wire System: JL Audio's engineered flying lead-wires have carefully engineered entry and exit support structures molded into the terminals and the voice coil collar and are jacketed to further reduce the likelihood of shorting and fatigue. The result is predictable high-excursion lead-wire behavior with long term reliability, and none of the compromises inherent to a woven-in lead wire system (when attached or woven into the spider material, lead-wires can alter the spider's motion, leading to asymmetrical spider behavior).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Enclosure: JL Audio recommends a sealed box size of 1.105 ft³ (1.0 ft³ net, plus the sub's 0.105 ft³ displacement). A diagram is provided in the owner's manual for a sealed box with external dimensions of 15" W x 15" H x 12" D, assuming 3/4" thick material. (If you are using 5/8" thick materials, subtract 1/4" from each dimension.)

Ported Enclosure: The ported box size JL Audio recommends is 1.405 ft³ (1.3 ft³ net, plus the sub's 0.105 ft³ displacement). The recommended slot port is 12-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 31-5/8", resulting in a tuning frequency of 33 Hz and a -3dB point of 31 Hz.

I've had JL subs for 2 decades. They have always outlasted any vehicle I've put them in, new or used. [ jesse  Feb 21, 2016 ]

I've ran these subs in the ported bass wedge box that is normally loaded with the 12w0. It does get loud for sure. But without being able to find any info on the enclosure, even from JL, being that it's patented by JL and the info is not made available by them, I can only speculate the box is tuned in the mid to high 30's range. My in vehicle response is already rolling off around 40hz with the most output near 50hz. So yes the box will do good and play loud on all types of music. But if you really want the most low end extension you can get with a less pesky response, I'd stick with recommended specs or possibly tuning a little lower if needed. I'm currently waiting for my spec box to be delivered because of the reasons I've just stated. I've ran in oversized ported box, sealed spec box, and the JL bass wedge ported box, and I've enjoyed the bass wedge the most, but I'm really thinking the JL specs are going to be spot on based on my experiences with the other boxes. We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Jeff  Aug 13, 2014 ]  Staff
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system. [ Greg  Jul 29, 2014 ]  Staff
That depends on the amps you are running. Read up on "ohms law" for every speaker you double up on an amp output, you are decreasing the ohm rating by half. If the speaker is rated at 4 ohm and your amp is rated as 2ohm stable, then you could run 2. As for the 10w6, I don't know how much bass you are trying to get, but those subs hammer. I have one in my wife's Acura TL-S and one in my Yukon Denali and both cars rock. Hope this helps. Robert [ ROBERT  Dec 22, 2013 ]
