Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This box and sub combo is a very nice item if you understand what you are getting. This sub in this sealed box is not going to rock your neighborhood. I saw a review that said people could hear you coming a block away with this sub and box. I highly doubt that. This combo will sound very nice inside your car, but is more or less inaudible outside your car unless you're really pounding on it hard. I first ran this with a JX500. With that amount of watts at 13 or so volts, it rounded out the sound of the system nicely, but had very little punch. I then ran it with a XD600. With that amp it was noticeably louder and had more punch, but still left a lot to be desired. This thing didn't really start to come alive until I ran it with a HD750, which is 250 watts above the recommended RMS. Now it has some nice punch, fullness and detail. Very responsive. You need to run this well above the recommended 500w to get the full benefit.

Pros: Looks really nice. Sounds very good once you start going above 600w or so. Takes up almost no space when pushed against the back seats in a trunk. Nice, heavy build quality. Nice for SQ. Nice for music like rock, jazz, classical. Responsive, does not miss a beat.

Cons: Does not come alive until you run it well over its suggested rating. Not what you're looking for if electronic, hip hop, etc is what you listen to most.

Hits hard!! Priced right!

I'm not a bass head who needs to rattle all the windows in a half mile radius, so a sealed box was my choice for accurate, tight bass. This sub delivers and then some. Paired up with the Alpine PDX-V9 amp (500watt RMS 2/4 ohm). I have my sub crossover around 90hz to cover some of fequencies I left off the door speakers. Doors are Alpine SPR-60C and SPR-60. I cut them off at 90hz just to keep them clean sounding. Could probably go a little lower if I wanted. Back to the JL Audio sub. I have this in the trunk of a 2015 WRX. 12cu ft trunk. Right now laying down, but I'll stand it up when I can fabricate a bracket to hold it from tipping. This speaker hits very very hard. And on top of that it can handle low sustained frequencies quite well.

Pros: SOLID construction. Just feels like a tank. Hits hard. Powered by a 500watt RMS amp, it really comes alive.

Cons: None that I can think of. I would like some quick disconnect terminals, but I'll add something later to make up for it.

Wow. I used to install car stereos professionally in the 90s (I'm old now. HA!) and installed a lot of JL Audio subwoofers in my day. Back in the day, I had 3 JL Audio 12W6 subs and it rocked (had it paired with the Phoenix Gold Outlaw amp). After leaving that job, life happened, etc., etc., and this is my first subwoofer since those days. I paired this sub with the JL Audio JX500/1D mono app. It freakin THUMPS! In my opinion, this combination feels very similar to my old setup except I have A LOT more trunk left over. Playing a lot of bass heavy songs, it hits low and hits hard. I don't like country music much but even THAT sounds good. I really haven't found any music that sounds bad. I also got the bass control knob with this to customize the bass for each song. The enclosure is very nice and covered in a medium gray carpet. The words "JL Audio" is stitched on top of the box and that's a nice touch. You really can't go wrong with this sub. I installed the sub firing back in the trunk in a 2009 Honda Accord sedan.

Pros: BIG bass, great looking enclosure, quality unit, great sound.

Cons: None

The punch I was looking for in my hard/metal/classic rock!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

By far the best addition to my car stereo system! I have the 'thump' I'd been listening for as well as waiting to feel!!! I can experience what I'm playing in addition to just hearing it!!! Wish I'd had this set-up at 16! I must give much credit to Crutchfield Customer support For their guidance and Assisting me in Choosing a sub that was compatible with my existing components as well as achieving the sound I desired! And a big 'thanks guys!' to the installers at Best Buy for their suggestions and expertise, the other car stereo shops around town should recognize and learn! Waaaay more than totally happy with my purchase!!!

Pros: I 'feel' what I'm listening to! So easy to hook up I'm hesitant to use the word install. One thing I really appreciate is the grill protecting the vulnerable speaker area thus helping to keep my investment safe!

Cons: For me, none. I'd much rather have awesome sound than a roomy trunk so I don't consider it a sacrifice or a trade-off in my circumstance. Some of you kid-hauling soccer moms might feel its a hindrance. Nothing past that I can think of.

Doesn't last

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was recommended to me by Crutchfield to be ran with my slash series 500/1. I blew two of these within a year. The first speaker blew within the first two weeks! I have to admit speaker sounds great but they don't last. For the price i expected to last especially when I'm running it at the rated wattage with the gain on 70-75 percent. This all happened with me not using the car that often. it was placed in a secondary vehicle so it wasn't getting used everyday.

Pros: great sound

Cons: Doesn't last if you are running the recommended wattage

So worth it!

Exchanged a Rockford Fosgate Punch 1, 12 inch ported box with this beauty and i couldn't be happier! I have a Rockford Power 400 amp running the sub and I have to turn down the gain because this things a beast! Either that or I'm just too old to have it thumping, but it's sure nice to have that range to be able to thump like a young teen again. Great quality with the carpeted box and you can feel the weight when you lift it. It sits perfect against the back seat of my Xterra and it plays all kinds of music beautifully. I am now a big JL fan and realize that even though they are a bit expensive, their products are worth it!

i agree w DONT GO SEALED

john from Illinois on 2/25/2011

This is a good product but only if you're limited to these exact dimensions. It worked in my 2003 Avalon but was lacking. It didn't project like I wanted. I read another review and they bought the ported "S.O." box (1.83 cu. Ft). I got the box and it is so much better for what I need. The dimentions are slightly larger but the reward is soooooo worth it.....the sub is awesome so if your pocket isn't deep I suggest getting the sub separate and buying the Sound Ordnance (S.O.) 1.8FTCU FT ported box! My whole set up is: Alpine 126 BT head unit,Rockford fosgate prime 500 amp, S.O 1.83 CU FT ported box and the 3w3- 4 sub. Its a Good set up especially for what I paid. Crutchfield tech support is phenomenal! They're very patient and will literally help you step by step if needed!

Don't go Sealed

BassOnly from NA on 9/7/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went with this sub thinking the space savings would be worth it. In the end, it was lacking. When you turn it up loud, the sealed box would actually cancel out a considerable about of bass, far more than I ever expected. I upgraded the older amp with a JL 600/1. In 14 months I ended up killing the speaker and had to send it back, (thanks Crutchfield, exceptional service). I then decided on getting a Bass Bunker ported box and swapped in the speaker from this enclosure. I'm now using only about 3/5's the power from the amp remote volume, and it sounds louder and better then the sealed box ever did. And the bass bunker isn't taking up much more space. In the end, get a component speaker, and put it into a ported'll be much happier that you did.

The best sound for bass

Anonymous from PR on 7/2/2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you own a high end stereo system in your car and you are really exigent with bass this is the sub for you. Drums and bass guitar sound real natural. But if you don't understand or don't know how bass should sound. Get the cheapo brands you will like how your rear licence plate shake. Also this sub sounds excellent when your amp crossover is between 75 - 100 this is the range to adjust

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i love the kind of bass that can be felt as well as heard. i've got a sub that goes this deep but it is to big for my car. i replaced it with this cab witch sounds good but it dosn't sound like a 22-200 Hz subwoofer as speced by Crutchfield. Even with my EQ set to +15 db @25 - 40Hz, and -15 db@100 - 240 Hz, a 30hz sine wave is still mostly harmonic over tones. it sounds this way on my home sterio also.

Thought the amp might be weak

myles from beverly,ma on 5/11/2010

I had a JL sub before and it filled my VAN with bass being only 10 " tHEN IT WAS STOLEN!! I was tied up for a few years then decided I needed a sub back as I blew up one 6" by 9" in the rear of my van and a 5 1/2" component speaker up front trying to make up for the missing bass!! I shopped high and low and got ANOTHER JL subwoofer this time all assembled to save time.I was not disappointed!!! The 12" JL sub has MORE than enough bass for my WHOLE VAN and then some! And it is CLEAN and NOT muddy!! I think its the best bass speaker made As I tend to PUSH my equipment! Myles

Bass again after years

mylestone from Beverly,Ma on 5/6/2010

I had a top of the line 10" LG subwoofer with 200watt kenwood amp and small box.It was stolen out of my van when the braindead struck!! I finally had enough $$$$ to replace it.And decided another LG sub was the way to go,as Lg never let me down. I found the 12" LG subwoofer ,box and LG amplifier was the way to go!Being never left down from classical to Rock with my 10"unit I ordered the 12" combo model! It was more Subwoofer than I ever thought off! It blew away my old 10" lg unit I paid $500 for!The power and clarity was just what I was looking for!! Now I have to replace the component speakers I got at Tweeter as I over powered them to make up for a missing subwoofer!!And crutch field was a great help talking for hours with them to get the right speakers! I might replace my 10 year old Kenwood head unit!As new units blow them away with new technology ,so a new Kenwood head unit is in my future! Thanks Crutchfield you have a customer for life as you walk the talk and are HONEST! Thanks for the LG subwooser and advise! My speakers and head unit are in YOUR HANDS!!!!!

Great sub

lance from Phoenix, Az on 3/3/2010

I've had this sub for about a year now and i have to say its been very reliable. the lows hit nice as long if you have a nice amp. i have a alpine 545 500 watt amp and i delivers well noted bass. i had it in a grand am for a year and now im excited to add it to my jeep liberty. it doesn't take up too much space for its price. i would recommend this sub for somebody who wants great bass but doesn't want to break the bank.

Perfect fit....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first sub so I harped over the choice for a while. I have this in a '99 Jeep Cherokee Pushing 400 watts @ 4 ohms and I think it would sooner rip my truck apart than give out itself. The W3v3 from what I have experienced so far is a very solid sub. I also couldn't decide which to get (sealed or ported) but finally settled on sealed as I listen to everything from death metal to jazz and classical. In short I'm glad I did, this box is just a little bit boomy but very controllable if you don't like that. So, if you're riding the line between sealed and ported and want this size sub, get this one. Don't even think about it anymore, just get this one it rocks.

i had and sold the jl audio w7 (which i loved) but i have a much smaller vehicle so i have limited truck space i usually dont go no lower than the w6 but i figure i would give it a try and i did and i love it jl has the nice clean bass i like no matter what kinda music you listen to and thats what i love about jl

Rocking Good!

Jamie from SF, CA on 5/28/2008

Using this sub with a JL Audio 500/1 amplifier in an Audi A4. Works great on every type of music. I'd recommend that you make sure that you use damping material on your trunk if you use this sub as it will shake your fillings, if that's your pleasure. I listen to a really wide variety of music and this sub makes them all sound real. Highly recommended...

JL does it again!

Walker from Edinboro, PA on 4/11/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using JL products for about 15 years and keep coming back because of quality like this. This sub is phenomenal and it's nice not having to give up your whole trunk. Mine is powered by an Alpine Mono MRP-M850 at 400 watts 4 ohms and I wouldn't change a thing. Go ahead and buy it if you want great tight bass response with a 12" sub that goes low!

JL 12" W3V3

P from Chico, Ca on 2/18/2008

I installed 1 of these in my 2000 Lexus ES300 with a Fosgate P400.2 and the thing knocks. Sounds so clean. I guess Lexus, BMW and Audi (as well as others) have an extra layer of insulation in the trunk cause it doesn't rattle that much. It fills the cab like a champ and you can feel the bass outside the car also. I would recommend a remote bass EQ for your amp it's just convenient. If you want tight, clean bass go with JL. Well worth it!

Overview: This JL Audio PowerWedge subwoofer enclosure is designed around JL Audio's W3v3 subwoofer, delivering tight, powerful bass with enhanced power handling capabilities. The PowerWedge enclosure is properly sized and tuned for the mounted 12" JL Audio W3v3 2-ohm woofer.

PowerWedge Enclosure: The PowerWedge enclosure features solid V-groove MDF construction with internal bracing to ensure structural integrity. The subwoofer enclosure features an angled back design to help save space in the cargo area of your vehicle. The W3v3 PowerWedge enclosure is finished in high-grade automotive gray carpet and features a steel-mesh grille to protect the loaded JL Audio W3v3 woofer. The JL Audio PowerWedge enclosure features a pair of gold-plated 5-way binding posts on the left side of the box. The JL Audio subwoofer enclosure has a installation depth of 12.875".

12" W3v3 Woofer: The JL Audio PowerWedge subwoofer enclosure features a mounted, front-firing 2-ohm 12" JL Audio W3v3-series woofer. Features of the W3v3 woofer include:

  • Dynamic Motor Analysis (DMA): DMA is JL Audio's proprietary method aimed at improving dynamic motor behavior. As a result of DMA optimization, W3v3 motors remain linear in motor force over a very long range of excursion, and also maintain a highly stable fixed magnetic field in the gap over a wide power range. The result is vastly reduced distortion, faithfully reproduced transients, and tight, clean, articulate bass.
  • Floating Cone Attachment Method (FCAM): JL Audio's patented FCAM technology is an innovative method of bonding the surround/cone assembly to the voice coil/spider assembly. This assembly technique ensures proper surround geometry in the assembled speaker for better excursion control and dynamic voice coil alignment.
  • Vented Reinforcement Collar (VRC): The Vented Reinforcement Collar is a composite structure that addresses two issues related to reliability. By reinforcing the critical junction between the cone, voice coil and spider, the VRC greatly reduces failures due to glue breakdown or material weaknesses. It does this by greatly increasing adhesive contact area and providing stress relief to the spider material at excursion extremes. the VRC also feature slots that facilitate air flow directly onto the voice coil windings to reduce thermal compression effects and enhances reliability.
  • Spider/Lead Wire Assembly: The W3v3 features a unique spider, coil and terminal subassembly which is assembled prior to installation in the speaker frame for optimum alignment and glue-joint integrity. The spider is insert-molded into a composite carrier tray which also incorporates the terminal assembly and lead wire strain relief features for enhanced reliability and optimal alignment of parts. The flying lead wires are carefully controlled and strain-relieved without resorting to woven-in lead wires, which can degrade spider performance.
  • Elevated Frame Cooling: The elevated frame design of the W3v3 delivers high-velocity air flow through slots directly above the top plate to the voice coil of the speaker. This not only enhances power handling, but also sound quality by minimizing dynamic parameter shifts and power compression.
  • Surround Stress Relief: By creating a radiused feature on the edge of the cone, stress is relieved from the surround material at maximum forward excursion, resulting in longer life and more consistent surround behavior.
