JL Audio's TR650-CSi component speaker system uses long-excursion 6-1/2" mica-filled polypropylene woofers for enhanced low-frequency response that'll do justice to your drums and bass. Great fit and sound

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in front doors of non Bose 6 speaker 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500HD. Mids fit perfect with grills after drilling holes for mounting screws. Tweeters installed fairly easily after removing factory ones and using a deemed to enlarge the hole in the factory plastic mount. Used the flush mounts with spring clips and a little hot glue on the back side for added security. Just driving them with the factory head unit right now but they sound great. Decent bass and much better highs. Liked having the in line crossover for the tweeters so that I didn't have to find a place to mount crossover units. Extremely happy with fit, finish, and sound for the price. Would definitely recommend them.

Pros: Decent bass, good mids and highs even with factory head unit. Great fit for my truck.

Cons: None so far

Don't work with Tahoe factory head unit

BB from Henderson, NV on 9/25/2017

2004 Chevrolet Tahoe

Have 04 Tahoe, no Bose system. Installed these on one side and compared to the factory and they sounded terrible! Factory side was far better. I was excited to have these and very bummed that they did not work. They were miserable. I lost tons of time because install was not easy, the 6.5" mids dont come close to fitting the metra 82-3002 door adapters, so I put them straight on the door, I also made plastic adapter for door mount tweeters in same spot...

Pros: none

Cons: they are useless, sound far worse than factory components

Shimmering tweeters

Greg from Ventura, CA on 9/21/2017

2014 Kia Optima

Much better than factory speakers, but these are not there yet. I set the equalizer settings to flat. 90% percent of the sound was coming from the tweeters. I lowered the tweeter setting and cranked up the bass. This sounded much better, but distorted the sound on my rear speakers. Still have the factory head unit. The JL's sound much better than the factory speakers, but the sound is not balanced or musical. I expected more from speakers at this price point from a top name company. I really like JL subwoofers.

Pros: Much better than factory

Cons: Not a good match with factory head unit.

Sound great!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in my front doors and dash with these in my 2016 sierra and they made a HUGE difference. They sound very clean and clear for the money. You can't get it all in this money range but these are a bang for you buck. The built in crossovers make the install cake. Shout out crutchfield! (Inside joke??) but when I hooked up my Rockford fosgate T400.4 it made these speakers come alive! Happy customer. Money well spent!

Pros: Easy install with built in crossovers Look and feel great

Cons: None at the moment

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered these by mistake. Crutchfield said the tweeters would not fit my '13 Accord Touring. With slight sanding of the stock trim ring, they fit it perfect and I am pleased with them. Easy to install and no separate crossovers to deal with. I am running them with a Kicker 40KX8005.5 amp and they sound great. Not the best I have heard, but certainly acceptable for the price - I bought them from the Crutchfield outlet store.

Pros: Easy to install, no separate crossovers to have to find a location and mount. Sound very good.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall they are very sweet sounding. I like the inline filter cause you can tweak it with a crossover to maximize their handling and sound without sacrificing any rms wattage. I paired these with a JL audio RD 400/4 and had them installed by a pro shop. They were able to maximize the cutoff frequencies to get the best punch and rolling off the crisp tight mids and highs to the Jl HO 10 subby powered by a RD 500/1. It sounds powerful and its more than anyone needs in a vehicle really once you set everything up to your liking with your head unit. All these components sound amazing together once it's all tweaked. 5 stars. It can get very loud without distortion but I did start to notice it at almost max volume, however you really wouldn't wanna be listening to it that loud anyway.

Pros: Even with an RMS head unit, they can sound great. Amplified is definitely where these things shine

Cons: Not much except you always can always probably get clearer richer sounding speakers

JL TR650-CSi Decent upgrade for a 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L w/nav

Brian from Cleveland, OH on 4/1/2017

2016 Honda Pilot
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After buying a new 2017 Honda Pilot EX-L w/NAV (AWD), I was disappointed with the sound quality of the factory stereo. I bought the JL Audio TR650-CSi component speakers because of JL's reputation for quality and that the crossovers are part of the tweeter assembly (no separate crossover box connecting woofer to tweeter). This allowed me to use factory wiring for the both the woofer and the tweeter (per Internet research, full range is on all the speaker wires). The woofers installed w/o issue using the Crutchfield provided speaker adapters in the front doors. The tweeters are mounted in the factory A-Pillar. They were slightly larger than the factory tweeters, requiring a slight enlargement of the hole, but this was pretty easy to do with a Dremel. Overall took me about 2.5 hours to install (I worked slowly and carefully on my new car). The woofers sound somewhat better than factory (more defined bass with less muddiness), however, the system overall is still weak on bass. The tweeters sound WAY better than the factory tweeters (the factory tweeters were very tinny; the JL are much smoother and brighter sounding). Overall this was an upgrade that I'd do again in a heartbeat.

Pros: Efficient @ 91 db, so it will run well on a factory head unit Good sound quality for the price

Cons: Not enough bass w/o a sub

I bought these to replace the factory door speakers in my Ram 2500. Major sound improvement with stock 8.4 In head unit. I like the included inline crossover for the tweeter and absence of external crossover. Very accurate acoustic and bass response. I have since put them to a 4-channel amp because I added two 10's for bass. Really happy with my purchase.

These sound great, and have a precise, crisp sound to them. I typically prefer better lows in woofers, but my sub (when I have it on) makes up for their lack. Not sure I would like these without a sub.

Cons: lows

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed these in my 2010 Corolla and they sound incredible. I'm using a kenwood head unit and an alpine amplifier. The install wasn't too bad. I'm impatient so I didn't take the time to flush mount the tweeters, but mounting them on my door was very easy. The speakers produce very crisp and clear sound without any distortion. You can hear all the small details in your music that you might miss with other speakers. I also have a JL sub and I am very happy with their products. Definitely worth the price.

Pros: Great sound, crisp and clear even at high volume. Install fairly simple if you have a little experience.

Cons: Install might be difficult for people installing speakers for the first time because the instructions aren't very clear.

For the price point, these sound awesome.

Pros: The component tweeter installed easily. I used the black putty (included) to hold the tweeters in place and it is holding fine.

Cons: I was told i may need to trim part of the housing to made it fit - happy I didn't need to. Tough install with a jeep dash but after awhile became an easy process.

These speakers can handle everything. They're loud and produce very clean sound no matter what genre of music you're throwing at them.

Pros: Little crossovers make installation less painful. They sound great!

Cons: A little pricey, but worth it if you can stomach the cost. Also, the terminals are a little fragile, so be careful when connecting the plugs.

Quality sound from quality speakers

2014 Toyota Camry
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought "Scratch & Dent" for my front doors to match exact pair that I have for the back deck that I also bought from Crutchfield. I am using a stock non-JBL head unit from Toyota. Sounds awesome paired with my JL Audio JX400/4D amp. Sounds very plain and lacks any bass without the amp so be sure it's hooked up to an amp if you want to bring out the maximum potential of these speakers. My only gripe is that "scratch and dent" was to come with... "These open-box items have minor cosmetic damage. They MAY BE MISSING NON-essential accessories. In some cases the manufacturer's accessories have been replaced with generic equivalents. The manufacturer's warranty applies." I was definitely missing an ESSENTIAL bracket and screw needed to mount the tweeter as a surface mount (that's what I did for the back speakers). No generic equivalents were added to these returns. Speakers themselves though, are a perfect 5 stars!

Pros: Excellent highs, mids, and lows (when used with an amp!). Quality sound and build.

Cons: none

No Comparison

VoxRick from Memphis, Tennessee on 8/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I returned the in-house budget brand for these JL Audios... No comparison. Of course, they cost 3 times more, so it's not a fair comparison. These speakers reveal what's in the recording. If the music was recorded and mastered well, the cymbals are clear and crisp, horns are sweet and mellow, acoustic guitars are well defined. The lows may be a bit thin but I paired these JLs with some 6.5 KICKERs in the rear and a small Kenwood amp and they sound great together.

Pros: Very musical, Well defined sound field, quality construction

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these in my 2011 chevy silverado without the Bose factor upgraded stereo. Speakers work great and I can hears sounds that stock speakers just can not produce. There is not drop in quality as the volume is turned up ( have not turned them up 100% ). Factory eq works well, but uses the manual eq setting and you'll get better sound quality. Mounting the tweeters in stock location sounds just fine.

Pros: Great sound for a good price. Install was quick.

Cons: The universal mounting brackets have to be modified for the main speakers to fit. Easily done with a little dremel work. Stock tweeter covers have to be modified to be reused.

Very Impressed

Ktrip from Watkins Glen, NY on 7/6/2014

I have an 08' Malibu, and I bought these to replace my "expired" front door speakers. I am running them on the factory stereo so at first I was nervous about decreased bass response and overall output. Those fears were 100% without merit. These speakers sound fantastic. The output is more that adequate, at about 50% volume they make it a challenge to communicate with your passengers, with no distortion, and this is just from the stock 40w head unit. I would imagine they would impress even more run from an aftermarket head unit or external amplifier. The fidelity is also wonderful. The factory stereo was always good enough to please me while I needed to use my car, but I would never chose it over my home theater for listening on purpose. These JL Audios all of a sudden make it not such a crazy idea. The music is definitely far more immersive now. Installation wasn't a problem. The woofers fit like factory with the brackets and wire harness adapters that Crutchfield included. The factory tweeters are concealed behind the A-pillar trim in my Malibu, so if your car is similar you'll need to do some drilling to install the JL tweeters. They come with provisions for flush and surface mounting so you have options. It's not tough. I am very happy with these speakers.

Good for the money

David from Wasilla, AK on 4/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a pair of 6.5" Focal's and the woofer appeared to be made of a coated paper. They were pretty bright with limited bass. I installed a pair of these JL audio's and I think they're a better product - and cheaper. These JL audio's have really good sound for the money, the bass is pretty good (better than the Focals' I had) and the are flatter whereas the Focals' were brighter. In this case, I prefer the JL's flatter response and deeper bass. I would buy another pair of JL before I bought another pair of Focals. Thanks Crutchfield - as always you ladies and gentlemen are the best!

Pros: Good craftsmanship, good materials, pretty good price and really good sound.

Cons: Can't think of any cons...

Excellent sound at this price point

Anonymous from Charlottesville, VA on 4/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a component system for my Toyota Tacoma but didn't want to have to spent $300.00 right off the bat. JL offered this package at an affordable price, and, it's relatively low power requirements meant that I didn't need to buy an external amp as well. Woofer installation was straight forward with the Crutchfield kit and wiring harnesses. There is no mounting hardware included for the tweeters so be prepared to drill holes, cut your door panel - or do what I did - construct your own bracket so that they fit in the factory tweeter locations. Tweeter mounts are available if you want to search the web. The sound is clear, without any shrillness or tininess so common in many component tweeters. I don't use EQ or Loudness and I feel that the sound is pretty neutral/accurate. Mid-bass has decent punch at medium or greater volume levels; I'm driving the speakers with a Kenwood head unit outputting 22 Watts RMS with no detectable distortion as I push the volume up to 75% of max. I'd definitely like to try out something higher up the JL line but I couldn't be happier with these speakers - a lot of bang for very little buck.

Pros: Clean, neutral sound with low power requirements meaning your factory head unit will work, although not the best choice. JL Audio's great name.

Cons: No tweeter mounting hardware, so not as plug and play as a coaxial. I think this should be made more plainly clear to customers.

Definitely worth the money. I was looking to replace the stock speakers in my silverado(non bose system). I really wanted to add depth to the music. I found these JL's and the reviews looked good so I purchased them. I was hesitant to do the upgrade myself but decided to give it a shot. I found that they were relatively easy to install especially with the brackets and wire harnesses provided by Crutchfield. It took me 3 hours(taking my time to ensure it was done right). Wow what a difference in the sound. I think there is a good amount of base with these speakers. Lots of highs, which I had to adjust down. But overall great sound. For the money, these were outstanding and definitely met my expectations.

Great Entry Components

Anonymous from Killen, AL on 1/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These components are great entry level components. Love the inline cross-over, keeps me from having to tweak the settings too much. Simple install, I used the supplied brackets but not the harness. I actually ran these through a PPI Sedona APA50, supplied just enough power to make the sing even better. So far I am loving these things.

Pros: Simple install, sound great. Sounded so good I had to break down and get a "sister" set for the back to balance out the great sound.

Cons: Tweeters not fitting factory bracket, but this was expected.

I got these speakers to up grade my 2003 Audi A4s factory Bose speakers, I chose them because they were components without the crossover that i had to worry about hiding somewhere. They turned out to match the sound quality of the factory speakers, even with the power of a 50 watt RMS amp. The woofers had pretty good bass but, the tweeters were very weak even with the treble turned all the way up on my Eclipse 5030 HU, sometimes i had to put my ears right up to them to make sure they were even on!

Great speakers... Huge difference

Ryan from Colorado Springs, CO on 12/15/2008

I own a 2004 Tundra Access Cab, with two 8" JL subs, an eXcelon deck, and before these speakers, Polk coaxials in all 4 doors. I didn't really want to install another amp to power components, but I really wanted components... so... I lucked out and got these. MUCH softer, and cleaner highs and decent bass that compliments everything. Just running off of a 4-year old eXcelon deck, they're night and day compared to the coaxials. And, the inline crossover is as easy to hide as the wires themselves. I had to do a lot of modification to get them to fit in my Tundra doors, but it's a tough truck to mount most speakers. Again, night and day compared to coaxials, and you don't "need" an amp... just a good powerful head unit.

I installed these in a 2000 chevy silverado 2500 extended cab. They fit right in the doors drilling new mounting holes and modifying the tweeter mount( dremel tool). Along with a pioneer DEH-P77DH deck, pioneer TS-A4672R speakers in the rear panels, a Rockfordfosgate punch P400-2 hooked to a JL audio stealth box with a 10" sub that fits under the rear drivers side. I am driving the speakers from the deck and the sub from the amplifier. Myself and a friend did the instalation in my shop in about 6 hours. I thought the stock system was good until I heard this. This thing sounds great!

Woofers: The JL Audio Evolution TR650-CSi component speakers feature 6-3/4" injection-molded, mica-filled polypropylene cone woofers with 1" voice coils and flat-profile, symmetrical-roll spiders. The woofers feature long excursion and enhanced low-frequency extension for power, more realistic bass. The woofers use butyl rubber surrounds for reliability and strength.

Tweeters: The TR650-CSi has 1/2" textile dome tweeters with integral phase plugs and powerful, ferro-fluid cooled and damped neodymium magnets. You can mount the tweeters in the supplied flush-mount or surface-mount fixtures. The tweeters do not swivel or angle in the flush-mount or surface-mount fixtures.

Crossovers: The TR650-CSi components use electrolytic capacitors on the in-line 1st order high-pass filters. The woofer is unfiltered, using its engineered smooth roll-off characteristics to blend with its tweeter. The Polyswitch electronic tweeter protection circuit is designed to minimize the possibility of tweeter failure. It monitors current going to the tweeter and will disconnect the tweeter from the signal when it senses overload. Once the volume has been reduced, the protection circuit will reset itself automatically.

He JL Audio TR650 already have a filter built in to the wiring so you can leave it off . That is what I would do [ Gillian  Sep 28, 2016 ]
These I believe have built in filters. I have these speakers and do not use the high pass filter. They sound perfect to me and better the louder you go [ andrew  Sep 28, 2016 ]
It has in line crossovers for the tweeters. No need to do any "installation" for them and they sound amazing. [ Aaron  Jun 12, 2014 ]
No cross overs [ BOBBY  Jun 12, 2014 ]
The TR650-CSi comes with speaker wire and a separately wired high-capacity crossover for the tweeter. There is no included crossover for the woofer nor is there a two way passive crossover network included. [ Paul  Jun 12, 2014 ]
These speakers do not come with pre-built crossovers but do have capacitors and inductors that act as high pass and low pass filters. I am personally very happy with these relatively low powered speakers as they produce clear sound far superior to the factory speakers in my Honda Ridgeline and did not require an additional amplifier. Hard to beat a 91 dB sensitivity rated speaker for what I paid for these speakers. If you're looking for a more efficient speaker (93 dB) you're paying a premium and probably would never identify any difference in modern music. [ Eddie  Jun 12, 2014 ]
It had an inline filter, they worked pretty good! [ Marlon  Jun 12, 2014 ]
I really don't know. I bought these for a friend and we are waiting on his 64 bel air to get upholstery before we do install. Wish I could be more help but we haven't even opened the box yet. [ DAVID J  Jun 12, 2014 ]
In-line crossover between woofer and tweeter.?? [ Randy  Jun 12, 2014 ]
