Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had to obtain phone instruction for constructing the wire harness that joined the adapter harness to the new radio. I had expected a wiring harness instruction sheet that defined point to point connections for my installation (1998 F150 using the stock amplifier)

Pros: Worked 1st time it was plugged in

Cons: Wiring took longer than expected

If you need this, you need it

Paul D from Maryland on 5/15/2015

1995 Ford Explorer
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not much to say about this. If you need it, you need it. You need it if, like me, you have a "premium" stereo in a 1995 Explorer, with a powered amplifier. As expected, you use this harness to control the power amp, and it provides line levels for each speaker so that you can properly set the gain for each channel separately. It works and was not difficult to install. Double Check Your Setup. I ordered the wrong harness at first because I didn't read closely enough. I thought I had a plain ol' radio when, in fact, my "auto-set" button meant that I had a powered amp and needed this.

Pros: Easy installation. As promised, allows you to retain your powered amplifier, which is nice if you're like me and just updating an old car with modern stereo features, and don't plan on replacing the whole system.

Cons: No cons with the product. The One downside is that once this is installed in a car like mine, it sits behind the installed radio (of course) and is not easy to access if you ever need to tune your line levels. Make sure you like the sound before you pop the radio in, because it's not as easy to remove the aftermarket radio as the factory one (if your setup is like mine).

I connected the system with the interface engaged and without. There was no noticeable difference in audio clarity or production. The receiver I purchased, provided more volume and individual speaker control.

Pros: Easy to adjust

Cons: Added to the physical space needed. Additional wiring protocol needed, beyond the wiring schematic provided

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easiest install i ever made, period! Definitely made my factory speakers sound louder, and clearer (this may be due to the new head unit as well). Just be careful NOT to over power your speakers with this small amplifier. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY ITS SIZE! Follow the instructions and you'll be fine.

Pros: Ease of use. Plain and simple install. Detailed instructions.

Cons: None.

Wiring adapter

Steve N. from Sparks, NV on 5/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only needed one of the included adapters! I didn't need the RF Gain interface (due to space limitations in the dash). Ended up purchasing the needed adapter @ a different retailer. See review for the F150 dash kit. Big truck, no room in the dash for the headunit, wiring, amp interface adapter. Frustrating install, on my part!

Pros: NONE!

Cons: Amp interface not needed, just the amp wiring plug!

Nice unit

Terry from Asheville, NC on 9/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Relatively easy to install. Had to make one phone call since there were lots more wires coming from the car than there were wires on this unit. Turns out that most of the extra wires are not needed and the installation was much simpler than I was making it out to be.

Pros: Good sound

Cons: There was an awful lot of wires and this box to stuff into a very cramped space behind the radio.

Perfect

Dean from Santa Fe, NM on 8/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used this for my 1998 Explorer 4 door with basic sound system AM/FM/single CD player. Worked perfectly! Just follow the intructions. I used solder and heatshrink for lasting connections. I did use a test light to make sure I had the right wires from the vehicle (switched power, constant power, dimmer, etc.) connected to the proper leads on the adapter. I did have a problem: see below. It was not a problem with this connector, but rather a problem the connector that was recommended by Crutchfield.

Pros: Perfect fit and easy to follow instructions...along with the intructions from the JVC KWR800BT head unit.

Cons: According to which sound system was in my vehicle I should have used a different connector. This connector is for a Mach system, but my unit was box stock basic, but still had a rear amp (but no sub). So if you have the vehicle I described above, this is the connector you need...not the one it calls for according to Crutchfield. When I called Crutchfield with the issue they were very gracious and sent me the correct adapter...a good deal in my book.

Cons:

Check Vehicle Before Buying

Jeremy from Davison, MI on 2/7/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To be fair, I guess my rating is more about Crutchfield's website functionality and advisors than this product. I wasn't sure I would need this, but according to Crutchfield's fitment guide and the phone advisor my 98 Mountaineer would need this because I had the Single CD/Cassette radio with RDS button. When it arrived the connectors with it did not fit so I called Crutchfield to find out I didn't need it and instead needed the "base" radio connector because apparently this does not have a factory amp even though the fitment guide and previous sales advisor said so. The tech support advisor first wanted to charge me $7 to return this plus the charge for the other connector. He then realized that Crutchfield sales advisor sold me the product and sent me the replacement at no charge and refunded the purchase price of this amp adapter. Best thing to do is pull your radio first, check out what type and color of connectors you have, then talk with an advisor before ordering so you don't have to wait "mid-install" for the rest of the parts.

Item works. Not sure why it was required. Instructions with it were very vague and incomplete. Lots of un-used wires that were not explained in either the Crutchfield instructons or the Scosche. The entire radio install took 2 hours of which 1.5 hours was figuring the wiring out for this device.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amplifier integration kit was a really big help when I installed an aftermarket radio in my 1997 Expedition, almost a necessity. Very simple to splice the wires together with the supplied instructions that identified all the wires and the connector adapters fight right in to the existing harnesses on the vehicle. I would definitely recommend getting this product if you have a factory amplifier in your vehicle's stereo system.

This unit works good. Dont forget to hook up the blue/white strip wire from the grey plug to a positive signal if you have a factory amplifier, or you will get no sound at all. This wire works as a factory amplifier turn on signal. The black box is just to bulky and is a pain in the butt to fit into a small dash pocket.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I soldered all my speaker connections because past experience over the years I found them to come loose through vibration. I used the connectors on the tuner connections plug. The directions would be more helpful if they explained or told the individual how to inspect and check the OEM system out prior to hook up. Such as having an AMP that was factory installed and where it may be located and that it has to be connected in order for the system to send sound to the speakers. You have all the wires you want in the adaptor but you need to know how to inspect your unit to see what is applicable. I used a repair manual to find what all the Expedition has and how to find it. Other wise the adaptor is a great help compared to installs we did with 8 track players back in the 60's and 70's. We had to install rear seat or door speakers, amplifiers and all those wonderful things that are now installed at the factory or sold as a kit. Crutchfield was a tremendous help in making sure I received the correct mounting hardware and kits and answered questions for me in a very timely manner once I decided I had to ask because I could not figure it out including a Sunday Morning. Thanks everyone, I appreciate the promptness in answering my questions I had.

Problems installing with MACH factory sound system

1998 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the Dual XHD-6425 head unit and purchased this to connect it to the factory amps & speakers in my 1997 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer. Install was quick and easy with the instructions from Crutcfield (about 30 min), but when I tested it my factory main amp and rear subwoofer amp didn't appear to be working. I turned the Gain up all the way on the Scosche adapter and though I could hear the speakers, they weren't getting the same amplification the got from the factory radio. The subwoofer, just replaced with a MTX Thunder4500, didn't work at all (it worked fine with the factory head unit). Called Crutchfield and they worked with me for 30-40 minutes and suggested cutting the gain out of the loop. When wired directly from the headunit speaker out leads to the Scosche adapter without the Gain module it appears to work. I don't know if the Gain module was bad or if its just a poor design.

Features

Compatibility: The OEA-4 (model C4FDK6B) is a non-electronic interface that allows an aftermarket high-power stereo to integrate into select 1995 and up Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda and Nissan vehicles with premium factory systems. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector for compatibility for your vehicle.

Adjustment Gain Controls: Four rotary gain controls (front left, front right, rear left, rear right) are located recessed inside the adapter chassis. There is a small flat-blade screwdriver attached to the adapter's case, and its use is recommended. The controls are very fragile and sensitive, and a slight adjustment will change volume dramatically.

Harnesses: The adapter's input wires are approximately 5-1/2" long with bare ends. These splice to the new receiver's speaker output wires. The adapter's output wires are approximately 11" long and terminate into a green rectangular Molex plug. There is an additional gray rectangular Molex plug with 6" wires with bare ends (These 6 wires splice to the new receiver's power/ground wires). The two Molex plug ends are molded to match with factory wiring harnesses. Crimp caps are provided for wire splices.
