Open-back over-ear headphones

Our take on the Sennheiser HD599

Sennheiser's open-back overacheiver

This is sort of a hidden gem in Sennheiser's stellar lineup of headphones. The HD599 'phones were released to little fanfare, but I feel they deserve some love and attention. If great sound is your bag, well, that's the main focus here. Impressive bass for an open-back design, and really fine detail in the mids and highs. Their soft earpads stayed comfortable through an entire work shift at my house. (Just note that they do leak sound — I decided against wearing them at the office.)

These Sennheiser 599 headphones are very good. I ordered them late one day and received them the next! Great service! My only complaint is that one day after receiving them I saw them on another site for less! I have never been so disappointed with Crutchfield ??

Average sound IMO

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered these to replace a set of 15 to 20 year old HD545s. To me, they were not as good. Seemed more flimsy, construction-wise. The sound was not bad, but not as good as my old 545. And they were comfortable. They did work well with my Pro-ject Headbox (also from Crutchfield). But I just couldn't pull the trigger. The folks at Crutchfield were really great about taking them back. No hassles, and emailed me the shipping label. I give Crutchfield 5 Stars for their support. I ordered a more expensive, different brand/model, instead.

Pros: Comfortable and light.

Cons: Only average sound quality. Not bad, but not first rate. That's a subjective thing, though. Maybe it's about par in this price range, I can't say.

Good headphones, but!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am surprised with these headphones. I never thought that at this price a good headphone has such a good quality audio. These are my best bass sounding headphones, and they are very balanced from bass to high trebble. I also own the more expensive HD800 and these, being also Sennheiser, can be compared as a second in order. The HD800 are bright and don't yield such powerful bass tones. These are very warm but clear and very nice to hear for long periods. I also find them very comfortable. One could complain that they have plastic in almost every part of them, but considering their audio quality and sound reproduction, they are fine to keep them very carefully. It's true that they have fragile plastic parts, and that has to be considered for those who demand a tough product. Let me add here that Grados, Senn HD800 and almost every expensive brands have plastic parts on them, something that even me regrets. But, their sound are OK for me.

Pros: The audio quality is very professional.

Cons: Many plastic parts.

Features

Overview: The new Sennheiser HD 5 series of headphones feature a contemporary design with a soft, padded headband and ear cups. Featuring Sennheiser's proprietary transducer technology and E.A.R. (Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement) design, the HD 5 series headphones deliver excellent sound quality from your smart device or home stereo system. The HD 599 model comes with a 10' cable with a 1/4" (6.3mm) plug for your home stereo, and a 51" cable with a 3.5mm straight plug for your portables. A 1/4"-to-3.5mm adapter is included, allowing you to use the 10' cable with a device or component with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Note: The large diameter of the 1/4"-to-3.5mm adapter may interfere with some smartphone and tablet cases, preventing a full connection to the device.

Open Back Design: The HD 599 headphones headphones feature an open back design that lets you be a part of your listening environment. Sennheiser's E.A.R. technology directs the sound directly to your ears to give you a natural sounding listening experience, similar to listening to well-placed loudspeakers. The high-end transducers used in the HD 5 series delivers deep, satisfying bass with clean, smooth mids and highs.

Stylish: The elegant look of the HD 599 is highlighted by the matte metallic detailing on the ear cups and stylish ivory color scheme. The large soft padded detachable ear pads are covered in plush brown velour, while the wide padded headband features an elegant stitched brown leather cover.

Cable: The HD 599 comes with a high-quality 10' cable with a full-size 1/4" (6.3mm) plug, designed for plugging into your home stereo equipment. You can also use the headphones in the recording studio for mixing or monitoring live performances. A 1/4"-to-3.5mm adapter is included for the 10' cable so you can listen to your smartphone, tablet, or other device equipped with a mini-jack. The adapter has a large diameter that will likely interfere with your smartphone or tablet case, preventing you from completely inserting the plug into the device. Also included is a shorter 51" cable with a straight 3.5mm plug for listening to your devices on the go. (You will have to control your music manually on the device, as there is no in-line remote on this cable.)
