Our take on the Sennheiser HD 630VB

We love the relaxing ritual of slipping on headphones at home and absorbing a classic album. You can sink into your favorite chair, wear your comfortable slippers, and use your best headphone amp. But keeping up with the rapid pace of life means we often end up listening to tunes when we're out and about. Sennheiser's HD 630VB headphones help preserve the potency of the listening experience, whenever — or wherever — you can sneak in your musical fix.

Critical listening — not just for home any more

We love the relaxing ritual of slipping on headphones at home and absorbing a classic album. You can sink into your favorite chair, wear your comfortable slippers, and use your best headphone amp. But keeping up with the rapid pace of life means we often end up listening to tunes when we're out and about. Sennheiser's HD 630VB headphones help preserve the potency of the listening experience, whenever — or wherever — you can sneak in your musical fix.

They are the latest in Sennheiser's famed HD headphone series, a favorite among Crutchfield customers and other audio aficionados. The company completed exhaustive research/development and used the finest materials to create a pair of closed-back 'phones that sound wide-open. They're built to excel in a high-quality home listening rig, through a portable high-res music player, or even your smartphone. You enjoy naturally presented sound without bothering others, while external chatter and clatter gets sealed out.

You choose the amount of bass

It's not always easy to get just the right amount of low end. Some recordings really benefit from deep, powerful bass, others don't. Some night you might feel like head-knocking lows, but maybe not the next morning. So Sennheiser included a variable bass control on the left earcup. Spin the fixed rotary dial to choose precisely how much — or how little — bass you want.

High-grade parts for performance, durability, and comfort

Sennheiser HD 630VB

Controls on the left earcup include a dial to adjust the level of bass.

Sennheiser's large, state-of-the-art transducers deliver dynamic sound with highs and mids that truly sing. A sturdy, lightweight frame protects them. The earcups and sliders are made of aluminum, while the adjustable headband is flexible and tough. It glides on comfortably and the over stuffed, replaceable ear pads provide a snug cushion around your ears.

User-friendly controls and mic

When listening on a smartphone, it may bum you out if a phone call interrupts the music — but it shouldn't freak you out. The HD 630VB headphones let you quickly answer (or ignore) that call. Above the earcup bass dial, there are one-touch controls for making or taking calls, plus selecting tracks and adjusting volume. And you can talk and listen to calls without taking off the headphones, thanks to the in-line mic.

Sennheiser HD 630VB

Sennheiser HD 630VB ultimate in sound quality from New York on 1/28/2016

On the go or at home, Sennheiser's new HD 630VB delivers amazing performance and a host of features not normally found on audiophile headphones. The cutting-edge transducers provide clear, powerful sound reproduction, allowing you to hear the subtle nuances of your favorite music recordings. You'll experience audio with a level of realism that is nothing short of astounding. In fact, with a frequency response of 10 to 42,000 Hz allowing you to listen to high resolution files, the HD 630VB may very well redefine audiophile listening for years to come. The most brutal german bad boys money can buy in this price range.

Pros: Build quality, everything is replaceable on the earphones, badass sound quality bass control, no rapper connected to its name sakes, its german and german engineering is tops,

Cons: None, you pay for what you get, if you need better buy the hd800s, or if you need the best in the world buy the sennheiser orpheus headset system only for the super loaded

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've love headphones and these make my 17th pair of keepers. Headphones each have their sound signature. The variable base is great on these though still not a headphone for bass heads. They are great to use with portable devices and allow you to take advantage of things like volume level, next track etc. I guess that is why it has a non-removable TRRS cord. They are not the lightest but I barely know they are on due to a very good comfort level even though the clamping force is somewhat high and my ears sweat some after an hour or so. Much of that can be laid to the pleather earpads along with the tight fit to the ears. Not a big fan of closed headphones (which these are) because they lack the soundstage of open headphones. These do a surprisingly good job in that regard so Sennheiser must be tweaking them somehow electronically. Still Grado headphones rule IMO but these are quite good.

Pros: Great for portable device use. Surprisingly wide soundstage Great constuction

Cons: Non-changeable cord Quite large.

Overview: The Sennheiser HD 630VB audiophile circumaural (around-the-ear) headphones offers extraordinary sound, luxurious comfort, and unique features not found on other high-end headphones. The HD 630VB's portability and rugged construction allow you to have an audiophile experience at home or on the road. On-board controls and a new variable bass boost dial prevent you from having to get up from your chair or search for your remote to change tracks or adjust the volume. The HD 630VBs come with a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm adapter and a semi-hard clamshell-style storage case.

Closed Design: The Sennheiser HD 630VB audiophile headphones feature a closed design to isolate external noise. This allows you to have a high-definition listening experience in the quiet of your living room, or on a commuter train. The adjustable headband and soft, replaceable ear pads provide hours of comfort for extended listening.

Variable Bass Boost: The most unique feature of the HD 630VB is the large rotary variable bass boost dial on the right earcup that lets you adjust the bass to suit your tastes. The bass boost can be adjusted +/-5dB at 50Hz by rotating the large dial.

On-board Controls: In addition to the variable bass boost, the headphones have music playback and phone controls on the right earcup. These controls are compatible with Apple devices as well as Android and other devices. A two-way switch lets you choose controls for Apple or "other" devices. The center button controls playback, phone calls, and voice control, depending upon the number of button presses or press and hold actions: play/pause, next track, previous track, fast forward, fast reverse, answer/end call, switch between two calls, and reject call. Volume control buttons are located above (volume up) and below (volume down) the center control button.

Headphone Cable: The HD 630VB has a non-detachable, 50" cable terminated into a 3.5mm plug. The cable has a high quality in-line microphone for making and taking phone calls and performing voice commands.
