Very smooth

Bill from Frederick, MD on 11/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After using some closed phones for a while, I started looking for an open model, because a) I actually want to hear if my wife is calling me or if someone's at the door, and b) I was looking for a more open soundstage. I'm playing FLAC and high bitrate MP3 through a Soundblaster Z to an AudioEngine NS-22 amp, into which these phones are connected. The sound is buttery smooth, which is good because I listen to more jazz and female vocals where I want the sound to be warm. So, music from Norah Jones and Conjure One just oozes out of the phones and envelopes you in a warm aura that's going to be great for passing away the winter months. They work well with classical and rock also, although that upper sizzle is rounded off, so it may not be as exhilerating for certain music selections. However, this same characteristic makes them easy to listen to for hours. The bass is exceptional for all of the above. Comfort is good; they don't disappear on my head (and I don't have a big head), but I don't feel like I'm wearing a vice either. The cable is pliable and quite long; it's easy to keep out of my way in the desktop environment where I'm using it.

Pros: Creates articulate but smooth sound. It's neither clinical nor sloppy. Reasonably comfortable. They're lightweight and fairly low profile.

Cons: Well, they are a little pricey....

Seriously excellent headphones!

After spending around 40 hours with these headphones I can safely say they're becoming my go-to for almost any type of listening. Their tone is very pleasing to listen to for hours on end and their design makes long listening sessions non fatiguing and effortless! Honestly I feel like I'm beating a dead horse with these compliments that have been said a million times. Just buy them!

Pros: They've become incredibly comfortable after a few days of breaking in the cushions and clamping force. I've also noticed stringed instruments in particular have become incredibly lifelike with an almost palpable level of detail in addition other tones like drum hits having very lifelike decay.

Cons: None yet!

Excellent headphones

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had long wanted to purchase a pair of Sennheisers and eventually got the 598 and 600 but returned both of them. They just didn't excite me. The 650s, however, are terrific, even without an amp. I have no doubt they'll be even better with a headphone amp. I haven't listened for over an hour at a time, so I can't speak to long-term comfort, but generally speaking they are comfortable and well-made. They come with a 1/4 adaptorwhich is helpful. If you weren't impressed by the 598 or the 600, or simply want to upgrade, then I think the 650s are worth an audition. I can't say enough about Crutchfield as a source for equipement. They give you an adequate amount of time to really listen.

Pros: Excellent imaging, soundstage, sufficient bass, compelling.

Cons: A bit warm with some recordings, but never fatiguing.

Just the start...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The desire to maintain domestic tranquility motivated me to start listening to music through headphones more often. My 30+ year old AKG K240s have served me well but I thought it might be time to audition something new. Did a lot of research but was not able to find any nearby dealers to try them out so I was a bit concerned about ordering before hearing. However, I have not been disappointed. So impressed with the sound that I grabbed about 50 of my favorite CDs (from Steely Dan Aja to Chet Baker to Yo Yo Ma) and spent a long weekend enjoying them all over again.

Pros: Quality product, great sound. I found the 650s to be comfortable over several hours of listening.

Cons: Now I think I'm going to have to upgrade my CD player...and then a new integrated amp to take full advantage of the 650s.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sennheiser Hd650 headphones are easily the best headphones I have ever purchased. They have great sound, a great sound stage and an impressive frequency range. Right out of the box I was completely impressed with these. They are open back, which means you will not get any noise reduction or noise cancelling, so they are best to use in a quiet environment. This is by design. The open back design allows music to flow freely and not be reflected of closed-back headphones. For the price, these are easily superb headphones for entry into audiophile listening.

Pros: Awesome sound, great frequency range, great sound stage

Cons: The only con I can think of is that it seems the plastic headband and paint shipping. Although I have not experienced any of this, others have stated that it was an issue.

Try before you buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was on the fence between these HD 650s and the HD 598s. After trying both of them I settled on the 598s. Don't get me wrong the 650s are excellent headphones. They do sound slightly better (especially at very low frequencies), and seem to have a more rigid construction. But, the 598s were much lighter and significantly more comfortable for me, with only very very minor sacrifices in sound quality. For almost half the price, no less. Just a friendly reminder that as with any sort of audio equipment, if you can find a way to listen to something before you buy it, DO IT. The same headphones/ speakers will sound different to different people, and different headphones will have different sounds that may better suit your preferences. Also, with headphones, fit and feel are a big deal. I demo'd both headphones with various uncompressed musical stylings through my Onkyo TX-NR717 receiver. I did not try either of them on an ipod/mp3 player.

Pros: Fantastic sound and construction, decent looks.

Cons: Heavy, minor nuances in SQ not worth the price gap from the 598s (personal opinion).

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful headphones, very comfortable and build quality is superb. I have several older headphones including Klipsch and Koss and they dont compare to these at all. Paired with my nuforce dac it truly makes a world of difference to ones music library. I was at first hesitant spending this kind of money on a set of headphones, but after careful consideration, and a lot of reading reviews I decided to go for it, and cant be happier.

Cons: NONE

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sennheiser has been known for making the best headphones...and this time they outdid themselves! The sound of these headphones is super. All the high and lows come through clearly. The bass is superb. The highs are crystal clear and miss are delicate and very realistic. I have owned Sennheiser headphones in the past and was always impressed by them, but these are superior to the best of the previous headphones. The sound is balanced and puts you right in the concert hall or the studio or wherever the recording was made. If there are any flaws in the recording they will be heard. Although the price may seem high to some, if you want the best in headphones - get the Sennheuser HD 650!

Pros: Gorgeous and realistic soundstage. Superb highs, lows and midrange. Extremely comfortable.

Cons: None so far.

These Sennheiser HD 650's Are Great !!!!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These replaced my Bose AE2 phones. I purchased these and simultaneously bought the NuForce Icon HDP on 03-20-2012. They were pictured together with a review on page 17 of the latest Crutchfield catalog. They came by UPS in two days. First off they fit great. I have a large head and was worried about that. They make my I-Tunes coming from my H.P. Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition laptop sound incredible. In person, they look gorgeous too. Spending so much was a hard choice but a tremendous payoff. The NuForce makes an excellent difference from just plugging directly into the headphone jack, night and day actually. I researched forever it seemed, but it was absolutely worthwhile. No matter whether you listen directly from CD's, YouTube or ripped CD's you hear details and things you will not have heard before. All pros with no cons. Just pure quality from both products. They represent a SOUND INVESTMENT. Buy from Crutchfield though as they are less expensive with no tax or shipping fees. Also, their support in the past has been second to none in my humble opinion. Go for it.

Cons: NONE
