Factory-recertified and repacked with care

If you've been eying Sennheiser's ultra-high-end HD 800 headphones, but you've been waiting to take the plunge, this factory-recertified model may just hit the sweet spot. Sennheiser's so confident you'll enjoy these superb headphones just as much as a brand new pair, they're including their full two-year warranty.

Close your eyes and let the music transport you

When you slip on Sennheiser's HD 800s, you'll hear intensely realistic, natural sound — so real, in fact, that it's as if you're hearing your music straight from the source. That's because the HD 800s use Sennheiser's careful driver technology, along with premium materials and exceptional build quality, to reproduce sound as faithfully and accurately as possible. You'll hear deep bass, rich midrange, sparkling highs, and more detail in your music than ever before.

Innovative design for high-definition sound

The HD 800s feature a specially designed ring radiator driver to re-create the clearest sound possible, while eliminating distorting resonances. They'll reveal the subtle details in your favorite recordings, from the sound of a mallet hitting the membrane of a bass drum to the quick breath of a singer before a solo. The open backs of the earcups prevent unwanted vibrations from the coverings from tainting the sound.

Audiophiles take note: the drivers are uniquely positioned to send sound waves to your ears at a 45° angle. Since sound rarely ever takes a straight path to reach our ears, the slight angle helps create a spatial effect for a more natural listening experience. So, unlike ordinary headphones that box the music inside your head, the HD 800s present every instrument as if you're sitting in the audience at a live concert.

Quality materials, impeccable craftsmanship

Each pair of HD 800s is assembled by hand at Sennheiser's headquarters in Germany using only the finest materials. The drivers are encased in stainless steel, and the plush earpads are made of high-quality microfiber fabric. The headband uses layers of metal and plastic for added durability, and to help damp vibration. The cable's high-quality, oxygen-free copper center conductor is specially tuned and shielded to faithfully deliver the audio signal from your equipment to the headphones.

From our hands-on review

"What I actually experienced was the most detailed and spacious sound I had ever heard from my music. I heard a wider soundstage than normal, but it was still a continuous sound from left to right. I found [the] level of detail in the sound exciting, as it's precisely what I would have heard in a live performance. It gave the recording real presence."

Killer Headphones

Roger from Santa Rosa, CA on 7/4/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I admit that this is the first time I have treated myself to a very serious set of headphones. I have listened extensively with various digital sources (and varying sample rates) through both a Marantz HD-AMP1 and a Woo Audio WA7d. There appear to be many who complain about the pronounced response in the higher frequencies. I have no complaints. The Marantz and the Woo definitely have their different characteristics but the "gee, never heard THAT before" effect on music I have heard hundreds of times is definitely there and was always positive. Have tried classic 70's Rock & Roll, Diana Krall, Jian Wong's work on Bach, and the Berlin Philharmonic on Beethoven's 5th. Through all of this, I kept hearing one sound over and over again: the "all good" alarm :-). Just make sure that you are prepared to spend a bunch more money on a headphone amp that will do them justice.

Pros: Sound is unbelievable. Open back really good for use in a studio. They look really big but are very comfortable--sitting, lying down, standing..

Cons: Cannot think of any so far.

HD 800 Refurb, sounds natural tonally, cannot detect the 6k notch (maybe5.5k). Perhaps Sennheiser dialed this particular niggle out of this Refurb unit. Wide open sound field, mids are not clinical not overly analytical, but adds nothing that would cause the wood from Viola, or Violin or Bass sound Lush. Mids are presented as they should be, untampered with by any degree of engineered enhancement or detent. From Timpani to Triangle the Refurbed Sennheiser HD 800 satisfies.I often compare the bass reponse to my Audeze"s. Where the the bass on the Audeze sound a tad more fleshed out. But I can leave the HD 800's on my head much longer. Very comfortable, they will be my go to cans for many years to come. Thank you Crutchfield for the great price and the excellent service.

Pros: Use these phones with a good head amp and enjoy. Light, COMFORTABLE Hear what you have been missing, with nothing added.

Cons: You should CONsider owning a pair real soon

Awesome and Expensive

Gary from san antonio, TX on 2/24/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It took me several times of looking at these awesome headphones and then at the price. I left the web site 10 times only to come back and finally spend as much money on a set of head phones as I did on my television. Crutchfield has a 60 day trial period and I consoled my self in that I can always return the head phones if my buyers remorse was still around by then. None of my friends even believed that any set of head phones could cost this much. Sennheiser has a set of head phones that go for $50.000!! So while I will never understand the how's and why's anybody can justify such a premium price for just a set of head phones, they are most certainly the very best head phones I ever heard by far! They have DEEP BASS and CRYSTALL CLEAR highs sounding every bit as good as my Cambridge Audio tower speakers if you had them on each side of your head if that can make sense. The only thing lacking is the feel of the bass hitting your body and that is accomplished by the speakers so with the head phones on your front row center of the best quality concerts on Earth no exceptions.

Pros: The head phones look beyond great. The are the most comfortable head phones on Earth. They come in a fancy case that keeps them protected. They look like something from another planet compared to "average" head phones. Last and most importantly, they sound better than anything else there is period!

Cons: The price.

Just as good !

Best sounding headphones I ever heard . If you like detail then this is the headphone for you ! Got mine hooked up to a Fiio X5 and Chord Mojo combo, excellent set up. The Chord Mojo has plenty of power and to drive these power hungry headphones

Pros: Highly detailed headphone, your going to here everything thats in the recording !

Cons: A bit power hungry, so get yourself a good amp to drive em !

Didnt know what to expect

Sennheiser HD 800 from New York on 8/22/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have never spent this much on a pair of "cans" before so I truly was in the dark about the elite side of the headphone world. Absolute comfort at first try on ..they are light and a really nice fit. I was a bit miffed however of perhaps not having enough power to really give them the juice they need to shine. I have a dj mixer which I have plugged into another mixer to feature sound effects and at first listen the phones seemed a bit tinny and certainly not worth theyre extravagant price tag. But the ear is a deceiving mistress and I found suddenly that going back ...back ...back (echo) to my other phones was simply no longer an option. These Sennheisers are a game changer and I was seduced to the point of being a mere humble human sitting beneath the beast of technology smiling as though I had just seen my first smart phone whispering softly to the heck did they do dat? Yes dear listeners of sound....the dragon has been slayed and my eyes have seen the glory....They are quite simply the finest headphones I have yet to listen and the demon that drives my soul to explore new upon new phones has been set upon the cross and left to die a death of tattered dismay. They are truly and most elegantly.......lovable.

Pros: The sound....the SOUND!!!!

Cons: Beware fellow humanoids. Simple hardware will not justify the means of these uncanny cans so make sure you have the POWER to make them shimmer and shake.

A great pair of headphones for a great price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a long time owner of the Sennheiser HD600, I have been looking to upgrade to the HD800s over the last six months. Considered to be in the top 3 of the very best headphones, I was expecting a lot, and they have delivered on every front. The musical presentation is second to none. These headphones present a much bigger sense of space than my HD600s or JHAudio IEMs. The size and angle of the drivers feel like you are crawling into your own personal space vs. that closed-in, isolated feeling you get from most headphones. Imaging is excellent. Second to none in this category. Pinpoint location of instruments and voices. They seem to do everything very well. Most importantly, they are very musical. Rich bass and mid-bass, beautiful mids, brilliant highs. I love the balance, no quality seems to dominate the presentation. I was somewhat concerned about a factory refurbished unit. The three things that sold me, the price and the reputation of both Sennheiser and Crutchfield. Boom! Done. If you have been considering these headphones, don't pass up this deal.

Pros: One of the very best headphones in the world, for a terrific price, backed by the reputations of both Sennheiser and Crutchfield

Cons: Not Applicable!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the refurb model and they look brand new. As for sound quality, there's no difference between this an a new one. There's already so much said about these cans already. Worth the price.

Pros: Looks awesome. Sounds awesome. Amazing sound stage. Fits my large ears, with glasses on as well!

Cons: Didn't come with the 1/4 jack converter. Which you would expect when paying the premium price.

Absolutely fabulous headphones!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sennheiser HD 800 headphones are far and away the best headphones I have ever heard. The clarity is superb. I have never heard headphones with a sound stage like this. I can close my eyes and point to any instrument in the orchestra. There is no distortion. The highs are crisp and clean without being strident. The bass is rich without being muddy, and mid range is warm. I love these headphones.

Pros: Comfortable to wear, rich sound, great sound stage.

Cons: None

Excellent Detail - Great Value - Cool Sound - 4.5 star

JRMNorth from Petoskey, Mi on 1/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

HD800s are well reviewed and well regarded headphones. They are very detailed, particularly the highs, but also very detailed bass and mids. The highs are prominent, with the mids a bit recessed (at least compared to the Audeze LCD-2s I have). The bass, while not accentuated, is fairly strong and very detailed. This is a very accurate headphone! My criticisms primarily relate to the lack of warmth to vocals, which is why I am keeping the LCD-2s. If I was younger, I may have chosen to keep these. At my age (56), the LCD-2s are easy to listen to for extended periods of time.

Pros: Detail, Detail, Detail! Comfortable - light weight and just the right clamping pressure for me. Strong Highs.

Cons: Lack of warmth to vocals. A little sibilance with hot recordings.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are by a large margin the best sounding headphones that I have listened to, and the most comfortable into the bargain. My recent comparisons are to the Audeze LCD2 and the HiFiMan HE-400, and the Sennhesier is simply worlds better in every way.

Pros: Sound Comfort

The Sennheiser HD 800 (Factory Refurbished) headphones that I purchased and received looked brand new. I was overwhelmed with joy when I saw the like new condition of the headphone. Processing and shipping was very fast. The Sennheiser HD 800 (Factory Refurbished) are simply the "best headphones in the world." Crutchfield has the best price on the Sennheiser HD 800 (Factory Refurbished). An audiophile must buy!

Pros: Soundstage, depth, clarity, separation, openness, and realism.

Cons: Can't identify any at this time.

Refurbished Sennheiser HD800

RUMay408 from Tennessee on 10/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality and build quality are first rate and as a refurb they look brand new. Also included were the box and manual . No regrets with this purchase, compared to a Beyerdynamic T1 the HD800 has better imaging, soundstage and discrete imaging. The bass and comfort are not at the level of the Tesla T1. These HP's sound better with proper amp and Dac I am using a Meier Classic Corda Amp/Daccord combo. Even with a portable ALO Audio MKll they sound impactful. David Mahler of Head-Fi has these HP's at #6 on the top 58 flagship headphones, so yes these are that good. The top 5 on the list are significantly more expensive. One of the better looking high end headphones.

Pros: Excellent HP in the upper most tier of top headphones. The best headphone I have ever heard with acoustic and classic music.

Cons: The headphones are not closed, so expect leakage if in a crowd.

Mine came with some minor scratches :(

RonaldZ from Los Angeles, CA on 10/23/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would rate this HP 5 star purely based on the sound quality. Coming from HD650, sound quality is noticeably better but highs are a bit too harsh for my taste. Build quality wise, mine came with some minor scratches upon arrival. They are refurbished, can't complain. My wasn't "as new" as others have reported. I guess that's my luck. I have no intention sell them anyway so scratch or no scratch doesn't really matter to me.

HD800 Refurb

SL from RPV, CA on 10/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first set of headphones over $1,000 nor have I heard everything in this price range, so take it with a grain of salt. I bought the refurbished version and it is indistinguishable from new. Very pleased with the build quality, appearance and comfort. Using mainly 96k/24b FLAC files, these are easily the best sounding headphones I have ever heard. The sound is 3D and extremely detailed. There does appear to be a slight touch of harshness on some recordings in the mid-treble. There is a reversible DIY mod on-line that I tried and it did seem to smooth that area out. It does seem to be a little finicky with different amps. I don't think they ever sound bad but they sound amazing with the right amp. Very pleased and impressed.

Pros: Sound quality - Sound stage/detail/transients, Build quality, Refurbished version looks like new, Comfort, Crutchfield's incredible customer service

Cons: You'll probably spend more on support equipment than you originally intended.

The Most Sensational of many High-End Phones

outthere from Idaho on 7/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These cans have the widest, deepest, most three-dimensional soundstage I have ever experienced. No other headphones I have heard come close. Among the high-end 'phones I evaluated, the one other rare (though not unique--HD-500s also produce this effect) characteristic is the ability to render the slightest nuance in vocals--it is as though the performer is in the room. The effect is uncanny. Thrilling is not an exaggeration! I compared Audeze 2s, Grado GS-1000s, and HiFiMan HD-500 headphones. I listened to jazz, blues, classical, solo piano, and rock CDs & SACDs. Since listening to rock satisfyingly loud is mostly why I want headphones, I prioritized that listening. Detail resolution is excellent in all these headphones. Snare drums, for example, take on a dimension I could never have imagined. The only reason the Sennheisers do not rate a 5 from me is they do not resolve bass with the solidness of the Grados, though highs are smoother and midrange amplitude it as it should be. A minor nit for me is styling like a reject from Star Wars--although all you see while listening is the high-quality braided cord cover--a touch of retro. The Sennheisers are also light (slightly heavier than the Grados but more comfortable).

Pros: Sound stage. Detail resolution. Accuracy (be prepared to hear things in familiar recordings you never knew were there). An immersive, thrilling experience.

Cons: A little short on bass reach (note: seems to be improving with use). Styling. Depending on the mix, sometimes mid-range can be less than satisfying.

Refurbished Sennheiser HD800

Troy from Los Angeles on 1/22/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great headphones, one of the best out there. I did a search through all internet sites and found that Crutchfield sells these, a bit surprise. These were refurbished but they looked brand new to me; the only thing 'not new' was that the opening flap on the box was missing a tongue. So get these guys, at a discount for a blemish on a box! With a genuine two-year Sennheiser warranty, can't go wrong with this deal .

Pros: Price: high (as cons) but good deal with this refurbished discount. Super comfortable. I have the Denon Dx000 series 'phones and the comfort ability level is similar.

Cons: Do realize that these are open-air so little to no sound isolation in or out. Require delicate setup to sound good (these require a separate headphone amplifier). I power mine with a WA6SE amp which is not cheap. Be prepared to hurt your wallet, but will worth the effort!

Very good solution.

Lorin from Corona CA on 3/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice. A bit difficult to enjoy with any type of noise in the area. They seem to amplify ambient noise, which might be typical for headphones of this type, but I'm not sure. The noise is not a problem with contemporary music, but with classical it can be a challenge. You can turn up the volume, but that compromises the experience and isn't necessarily a smart solution. I am new to headphones as a regular listening source and IMHO headphones just have short comings. That said, these can sound quite stunning on some materials and excellent on most. To the point they can really allow you to be drawn in. Much like a tube amp will do. I have been listening to these daily for about 3 weeks or more. I use mine with a Schiit Valhalla amp and Schiit Bifrost DAC. Source is a McIntosh Labs MS300 and all material is in FLAC with an optical output. Take advantage of the refurbished if available. Hard to tell they weren't new. In the end, they are an excellent alternative to my primary listening environment. Crutchfield's 60 day policy was really key to my ability to make a comfortable purchase.

Pros: Comfortable, very revealing, no coloration.

Cons: Ambient noise seems amplified at low listening levels.

Pros: Very friendly service and great headphones in near pristine condition.

1 question already asked

The Sennheiser HD 800 would work well with the Sony PHA-3. It isn't clear to me how you would connect the PHA-3 to your sound system. An adapter is needed to connect the HD800 1/4 plug to the PHA-3 1/8 input. [ Alvin  Nov 26, 2015 ]
Hi there. I just purchased the Sony PH3-3 and am very happy with it. I have connected my Sennheisers HD 800s to it and it works wonderfully. I cant see why this simple mini amplifier would or could short out your computer or Sony amplifier in any variation of connection. Yes you do however need an adaptor for a 1/4 inch headphone that would bring it to a 1/8th. I must admit that I was given improper hooking up instructions by Crutchfield and needlessly bought a computer cord that was completely unnecessary. Just put the headphone OUT from the back of the Ph3 into the available input on your amp and your headphones connect in the front of the Sony PH3. All is well in the world. Hope I have helped you in some small way. [ DARYL K  Nov 26, 2015 ]
I'm using the HD 800s with the TEAC TA P50 which I got from Crutchfield, not the Sony. My receiver is a Denon DRA 395. They work fine with it and I don't need the Amplifier. I can also use them without the Amp on my MacBook Pro. I do need the Amp for my iPad and iPhone. I have an Audioquest cable , also a Grado adapter to use to connect the iPad. They work fine. Unless the headphone outputs on your computer AA d receiver are not powerful enough to give you listenable sound I wouldn't bother with the Amp. As I said above, you would need it for I devices. Hope this helps. Happy listening. I never heard headphones like these. There are truly amazing! Happy listening. Mike [ MIKE A  Nov 26, 2015 ]
1. We don't normally comment on other companies' products but looking at the specifications for Sony PHA-3, it should pair well with the Sennheiser HD 800. 2. Yes, you will probably need an adapter as the Sennheiser HD 800 comes with a 1/4inch plug. [ Rosmadi  Nov 26, 2015 ]  Works for Sennheiser
