Sennheiser MK 4
Large diaphragm multi-purpose condenser microphone
Our take on the Sennheiser MK 4 by Crutchfield's Ken Nail
Optimized for excellent vocal reproduction
Sennheiser built the MK 4 microphone to fit the needs of both the professional studio and the home recording enthusiast. It's designed to capture vocals with exceptional fidelity, and we recommend that you also purchase the MKS 4 shock mount for best results when recording voices. The mic's gold-plated diaphragm is enclosed in a large capsule that's shock-mounted in a tough metal housing, so this mic will handle the occasional hard knock without a problem.
Versatile enough for other applications
You'll find the MK 4 a good choice for many other applications, especially instruments with a strong high-frequency presence like acoustic guitar, strings, and wind instruments. But this mic, with its large diaphragm and rugged construction, is equally at home with guitar amps, drums, or anything that rocks. The package includes the MK 4 microphone, a mounting clamp, and a carrying pouch.

Overview: The Sennheiser MK 4 is a professional-quality cardioid condenser microphone that is designed for home and professional studios. It features a 1" true condenser capsule, and produces a warm sound for vocals and acoustic instruments. The microphone comes with a stand adapter, a 5/8"-to-3/8" thread adapter, and a cloth storage pouch.
Pickup Pattern: The MK 4 has a cardioid polar pattern, which rejects unwanted background noise, and reduces feedback.
Construction: The MK 4 is designed and made in Germany. It features a full metal housing with a 24-carat gold diaphragm and an internally shock-mounted capsule to minimize noise. The mic should be mounted vertically with the sound source coming from one side (the side marked with the Sennheiser "S" and MK 4 logos).
Phantom Power: This true condenser microphone requires 48V phantom power. An unsuitable power supply can cause damage to the microphone.
Mounting: The MK 4 comes with the MZQ 4 threaded stand adapter, which screws onto the bottom of the microphone. The adapter can be used with microphone stands with either 5/8" threads, or 3/8" threads when used with the included thread adapter. For vocal recording, the optional Sennheiser MZP 40 popshield or MKW 4 windshield are recommended. To suppress structure-borne noise, the Sennheiser MKS 4 shock mount is recommended.
