Our take on the Sennheiser RS 160

Sennheiser's RS 160 wireless headphones let you enjoy rich, spacious sound without anchoring you to your sound system. The comfortable, cushioned earcups fit over your ears to seal out external noise. Advanced drivers accurately reproduce everything from a clear soprano voice to the heart-pumping beat of the latest R&B track. And with a wireless range of up to 60 feet, you can roam freely while you listen — make popcorn during TV commercials, look through a photo album in another room, or enjoy some music while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.

Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology
The RS 160s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows up to four people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family. (Add-on HDR 160 headsets available separately.)

Wireless freedom, at home or on the go
Wireless setup is easy. Just connect the compact transmitter to a spare headphone jack using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet or pop in a pair of "AA" batteries for portable use. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.

Exactly what I was looking for

Queenie from rural Michigan, USA on 12/29/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are exactly as described, they arrived quickly, easy to set up and begin enjoying my music! I bought based on reviews and they were all accurate. I can use them without wearing my hearing aids and the sound is great. I was missing a lot of music and didn't even realize it. My husband is happy he doesn't want to hear my music as much as I do.

Pros: Comfortable, sound is good, range is sufficient. Why pay more for Bose?

Cons: None that I see.

Overall Very Good

Mark from Tennessee on 12/29/2014

This is the second set of Sennheiser wireless headphones I have owned. The RS160's have several positives going for them: 1. Very comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. 2. Good signal range. 3. Excellent sound quality. For the money, I give them 4 stars out of 5 overall. If I have to list some negatives, they would be: 1. The installation cord provided with the headphone may not be the right one for everyone. I had to go purchase the correct cord for my situation the next day (Dual male RCA Y connector to stereo mini-plug) as my TV does not have a dedicated mini-jack headphone output. Once that was done, however, install took just a matter of 30 seconds. Still, Sennheiser should not assume that the only cord they provide will be useable by everyone. Including a couple of different adapter cords or plugs to account for different needs should be expected for phones that cost over $100.00 2. Having owned a different model of Sennheiser wireless phones previously, I know from experience and the similarities of construction between the two, that these headphones will not take a lot of abuse. If you accidentally drop them, and they hit at the right spot, it is possible to break the headband in two. The plastic is not extremely thick so you have to be careful with them. Don't take them off and toss them on a hard surface of any kind. Be nice to them and they will last a long time. 3. No storage cradle on this model

Pros: Good phones for the money

Cons: Sennheiser should include more instalation cord options, and a storage cradle for the phones should be standard at this price point.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice comfortable headset. The range is excellent. I can go anywhere in my house and still have a signal. Sound quality is great too. I can watch concerts while my wife sleeps and crank it up.

Pros: comfort, sound quality, Range

Cons: None so far

Didn't know what I'd been missing

Steve from Virginia on 11/13/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Sennheiser RS 160 headphones based upon reviews and with help from the Crutchfield tech. My specific issue was hearing the voices clearly while watching TV. No doubt I have some hearing loss, but so many people I know complain about being able to hear voices clearly that I thought I'd give these a try. I now own two pair. My wife can watch TV with the volume as low as she wants and I can hear every single word. It's nothing short of fabulous! They are also spectacular for listening to music. I tried a friend's Bose headsets and found the RS 160 to be at least as good and at half the price. Set up was a piece of cake; couldn't be happier.

Pros: Voices on TV clear as a bell; music fabulous, simple set up

Cons: None!

These work great, easy to set up and they sound and feel great.

Cons: I wish they would come with the audio cable so I could have plugged right into my headphone jack of my a/v receiver. I got the cable the next day and have had no problem.

Sennheiser RS 160

TwoCrows from Potomac, MD on 7/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound quality is good, the reception range is excellent. I'm using them to listen to TV while exercising, for which the sound quality is more than adequate. If you neglect to turn the headphones off, within 24 to 48 hours they will not have a charge, but you can always drop in alkalines. They originally fit too tight, and there appears to limited adjustment. However, they now fit okay. I'd be willing to sacrifice a bit of the seal for an increase in comfort. Well worth the price.

Pros: Good sound Excellent range with no interference

Cons: Somewhat uncomfortable.

Cons: Cable to charge headphones is rather short

Sennheiser RS 160

Bill from North Carolina on 3/17/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this headset to help with my hearing deficit. I especially miss the frequencies for dialog on TV. Using this unit I can watch TV and hear perfectly. My wife's hearing is normal so the volume on the TV can be set very low to suit her, while I can use the headset to direct sound perfectly to my ears. The unit did not come with a correct cable: RCA left and right to the stereo mini jack needed by the unit. The connection I used was the RCA audio out on my satellite tv box to the mini Jack input on the transmitter.

Pros: High quality stereo sound; diminishes background noise/sounds. Fairly easy setup if you have the correct cable connections.

Cons: Might need additional cable connector...RCA to mini jack. Controls on the headphone should have a design that allows for "feel" to make an adjustment of volume.

Excellent Headphones

BillH from Fort Myers, FL on 1/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent wireless headphones at a reasonable price. Perfect for a small condo with adjoining rooms where the wife wants to watch HGTV while you are watching sports. Easy to set up and use. Only challenge in set up was that I had to connect the input directly to the cable box instead of the HDTV.

Pros: Excellent quality and performance in a wireless headset.

Cons: None to date

Pros: Very comfortable

Cons: somewhat bulky, but that is to be expected.

Great headphones

Mike from Washington, DC on 12/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these to use on the elliptical/treadmill, because I previously had to turn up the TV to such a loud volume to drown out the noise of the exercise machines. I could not use the "sports" headphones because my TV is not Bluetooth enabled. So these Sennheiser wireless headphones were the perfect solution at a decent price. They were very easy to set up and connect to the TV within minutes. They are very comfortable, even while exercising, and the sound is great. I can now listen to the TV at a reasonable volume and I can hear the sound much better, including surround sound on TV programs. Most importantly, my wife no longer wants to kill me for blasting the TV in the house while exercising.

Pros: Comfort, sound, easy to use, reasonable price.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The fit is good sound quality is high needs to have a little more bass and volume for my style

Pros: Nice fit good sound for the money

Cons: A/C adapter will only charge on thing at time so you have to charge the base than unplug it and charge the headset if you step up to the rs 170 you won't have this problem

Great Value

DG from Fishersville VA on 11/17/2013

Great Sennheiser sound for a reasonable price. The over ear head phone blocks ambient sound extremely well and delivers pure clear music and vocals. I use it for TV mostly with much better results than a sound bar. Only two issues worth noting, the head phone becomes heavy after a while and requires a break to let your ears recover and the ear piece controls are hard to find and use.. But overall it's a good choice well worth the money.

Pros: Sound quality, noise isolation, cost

Cons: Weight, controls on the ear piece

Good sound

Brade from Ocean View DE. on 8/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all, you need a Jack Hammer to get into the packaging. Even with industrial type shears I had a hard time opening the packaging. The instructions for use are very minimal. Just pictures and very little written in English. The on/off volume controls are flush with the headphones, hard to operate when wearing the headphones. I would prefer a simple on/off switch and a round volume control, much easier to operate when wearing. If you have a home theatre, they can not be hooked up to your receiver or TV, they must be hooked up to your cable box or Satellite receiver. When hooking up that way there is an echo in the sound and the mouth movements of people on TV do not sync with the spoken word because there is a slight delay between your TV and the headphones. The sound quality is very good, clear and precise. For some one who has a slight hearing loss this is the only way to go, spoken words are clear and can be understood.

Pros: good sound and fit.

Cons: controls, packaging, sound delay.

Once You Get Your Hands on Them...

Art R. from New Harbor on 7/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

You have to experience it to believe it ... not the headphones, but the packaging - hell and death, what an ordeal! Blister pack like no other that actually cut my wife as she struggled with it and with a special cutting tool. Oh, yes, the headphones: they are great! I was skeptical, frankly, because of our setup: the signal has to go through a closet door where our receiver is located, through a hallway, through the great room wall, and go another 12 to get to a listener. Once we turned them on, I was stunned at the sound quality (no hiss!) and comfort of theses phones. Recommended without reservation - but wear gloves when the package arrives!

Pros: Most everything that really counts.

Cons: Packaging.

Wren from Maryland on 5/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to operate, perfect combination of outside noise reduction combined with clear audio transmission. Comfortable to adjust to size and wear for lengthy periods. I have used it outside and it still carries the signal. Was boasting about this in chat room for over-55 chatters and a friend in Ireland loves his, too. Good price for the quality. Just what I've needed when the kids next door are out playing.

Pros: Good price for quality. Easy to operate. Good range.

Cons: A very faint sound when tv is on Mute.

Relationship Saver

platypusjones from Philadelphia, PA on 5/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Living in a one bedroom that is a loft type space meant that I needed to come up with a way to watch movies and play games without disturbing my girlfriend. A little research led me to buy these. They sound great and are easy to set up. My only negatives are that these only come with 3.5mm input so I had to buy and adapter for use with my home receiver and that I'm not always sure at a glance whether or not the headphones need charging.

Pros: Good sound, good range.

Cons: Only one input comes standard, you have to buy adapters.

I liked this wireless headphone so much I bought two more to use on my other media basis.

Pros: Clarity, comfort, ease of use, learning curve and quick rechargeable batteries.

Cons: Can't think of any.

Highly recommend

York KAT from York, PA on 12/28/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 15 year old daughter wanted Beats. After a little research, I decided my money was better spent on the Sennheisers and it was definitely the right choice. While they don't come in the cool Beats colors, the quality of workmanship and sound quality is great. Lots of noice reduction and even an indicator when volume is too loud (although that doesn't stop a teenager - at least its a warning)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product delivered as promised

Pros: Wireless set up was smooth and easy

Cons: Should come with the 1/4 to 3.5 mini plug adapter so it would work with standard industry stereo receivers. They give you 3 international plug adapters that went straight into the trash. Instead of that, they should give the stereo adapter.

the headphones are making a big impact on getting along better....since the TV goes most of the day, I can enjoy a quiet house, my husband can listen to the news/sports as much as he wants....and then late at night I can watch a movie and he goes to bed undisturbed....great help for both of us living in a small apartment...The only problem is that the on/off button on the headphones is conceal so well, that it is difficult to use...

Very Nice!

RichardR from Baton Rouge LA on 11/13/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this headphone model mainly for TV as I have trouble hearing soft voices, especially with background noises. So far, I am very pleased with my purchase. The sound is excellent, and I can easily move around the room with out any signal issues. They comfort level is very good, I have worn them up to 2 hours at a time with little discomfort. I am finding that the more I wear them, the less I notice any discomfort. The only issues I had was finding the right cable connections I needed to set up the transmitter, and the volume control. A small knob would work better for me.

Pros: Sound quality, range, and comfort level.

Cons: Volume control, lack of plug in adapters for transmitter.

Excellent Product

Big Dog from Page, AZ on 10/2/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Directions not as clear as I would like and needed to call Crutchfield advisor with question re: transmitter, but once set-up works great! Also own the Sennheiser 840 TV wireless headset which my wife prefers, but I prefer the around-the-ear design of the RS166 which I find more comfortable and much better for music listening You can't go wrong with either model. The RS166 is a well-made quality product backed by superior Crutchfield customer support.

Good Performance

BillM from Maine on 8/12/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have used headphones for about two weeks. Easy to set up and get operating. Sound quality has been very good, have not had any background hiss or static . tested range only in room where they are being used, anywhere in the room has been fine..max 15-20 feet. They seal well around the ears. Have been used for tv listening only. They are snug and take some getting used to but are generally comfortable.

Pros: Very good sound quality. Easy to set up and adjust

Cons: Only come with one cable with a miniplug, so check your system to see what connectors you may need to order separately

Works well, as expected

SilentRunner from New York, NY on 6/4/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pretty easy setup, work as expected. The range is good for one room, no distortion. I had the RS130 system for years, working flawlessly, so when the need arose for a second set, went with Sennheiser, again.

Pros: The sound simply cuts off when our of range, as opposed to turning into hissing or distorted sounds. The "Kleer" system does seem better, as my old RS130 system would sometimes lose reception if you turned your head and blocked the earpiece with the wireless receptor with your head.

Cons: I liked the old "knob" style volume control - it was easy to adjust by feel with headphones on. These have up/down buttons. Also, these only come with 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male cable; RCA to 3.5mm cable should be included, as you'll need it for most cable boxes.

Headphone Solution

Dannop from Northern California on 5/14/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice wireless headphones. Easy to set up and use. Good sound quality and of course no cords zig-zagging on the floor. I use these mainly at night so I don't have to have the volume up and can still watch tv and movies (especially movies). It's really nice to hear and understand all the spoken words. I would have given them 5 stars but I noticed that the sound cut out when I went into another room that is about 40 feet away from the main tv room. Certainly not a deal breaker for me but buyers should beware of the limitations. I've read reviews about people mowing yards and the like and I assume they had the module unit in a direct line of sight situation otherwise I think it would be a spotty performance. I think it's at a good price point and I think that is evidenced by the fact that my local store had other brands of wireless headphones in stock but they have been out of these specific headphones for almost a month.

Pros: Good fit, easy set up and the bonus of noise cancelling of regular household noise (dogs, cats, cars)

Cons: Doesn't have as long a range away from the base module as they indicate.

Not as user friendly as discontinued model

Stephanie from New York on 1/25/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My outdated Sennheiser cordless headphones sat on a charger. I didn't have to replace batteries every time they ran out. I miss that. It's annoying. Also, the buttons on these headphones are tiny and indistinct from each other except for the tiniest little bump, which takes concentration for a few moments to find while wearing the headset. I wish I could return this, but I immediately threw away the packaging because I've always loved Sennheiser products...never thought I wouldn't love them.

Pros: Sound quality.

Cons: No charger stand; must replace batteries. Buttons indistinct from each other. Not user friendly.

Sennheiser RS 160

Megan from New York on 1/24/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product. Setup was easy and works as advertised. I use it for TV viewing while while my husband is reading next to me. Main reason for selecting this headset was the rechargeability and value for the features you get. Sound is good and connection is flawless. I only have one complaint and one suggestion. The packaging was very difficult to open. You will need a sharp knife or exacto blade to open You need to be very careful not to cut the headset itself when cutting the hard plastic packageing. My suggestion would be for a better battery level indicator. The unit only will flash when battery is close to end.

Pros: good value for sound quality, range, and construction. Rechargeble headset is nice feature

Cons: packaging difficut to open, battery level indicator could be better.

Reed from Alexandria, VA on 11/21/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just got these and found the set-up easy and the quality excellent. Headset is very light and the sound is terrific. Note, however, you need to get an adapter plug so you can plug into a full-size headphone jack on a home theater system. Only comes with a mini-plug for PC's.

Additional headphones

curtis from mason, oh on 6/18/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Difficult to get the additional headphones recognized by the wireless transmitter. Instructions are very limited and I have repeated the steps to no avail. It should have a multiple option that is easier to enact....for the time being, i have given up.

Great bang for the buck

Mabuhay from Boston, MA on 5/10/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sennheiser Wireless Headset RS160 at Crutchfield is darn good "for a wireless headset at that price". My Bose QC15 (wired) still offers deeper and richer bass and fuller sound. The RS160's mids to highs are more distinct. I've hooked them up to the same source at the same time to do the comparison. Wired or not, I prefer the sound of the Bose. But this RS160 is better than what I was expecting. I'm definitely buying an additional headset.

Very Happy with these Headphones

gmanvbva from Charlottesville, VA on 10/28/2010

I am very happy with these headphones. They have solid range (they work everywhere in my condo and just outside). Sound is excellent, no background noise (similar products suffered from this). They are very comfortable to wear for long periods. I have a smaller than average head so this may vary for others. I use them regularly to listen to the bedroom TV while my wife sleeps and also use them for Xbox/PS3/Music around the house.

Sound is very clear with no hissing noises. [ Martin  Dec 08, 2013 ]
I bought them for a gift, so I have not used them. [ WILLIAM M  Dec 06, 2013 ]
The unit works very well my wife loves them she watches tv with them and has had no problem with them [ RUSSELL F  Dec 06, 2013 ]
The sound is clear with no noticeable hiss. The RS 160's reproduce the full range of sound at normal listening levels. The wireless base is plugged into a Denon 4308ci working off conditioned power. [ KURT W  Dec 06, 2013 ]
I have experienced no "hiss" or other spurious sounds whatsoever. Even when standing directly before an operating microwave. [ JAMES  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Dear James, I think the sound is great. I have never heard any hiss. It seems that the battery doesn't stay charged for a very long period of time, but the fidelity is very good. I hope this helps you make your decision. Overall, I am happy with these headphones. Darryl Henry [ DARRYL  Dec 06, 2013 ]
James, None at all, very clear sound. [ BRADFORD E  Dec 06, 2013 ]
None whatsoever [ ANTONIO E  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Crystal clear sound [ ANTONIO E  Dec 06, 2013 ]
These headphones sound very good. There is no noticeable hiss. However, I did pay $10 more than what you show here. Will I get a $10 refund? [ J  Dec 06, 2013 ]
I've had these for about 2 weeks and used or should I say try to use them every night. They sound great, the problem is they shut off automatically for some unknown reason. I trouble shot them with Crutchfield but the were stumped. I am sending them back. I've used other wireless headphones for many years and never had this problem. Never tried Sennheiser before but never again. I checked batteries etc. Oddly the transmitter shuts itself off automatically and it is running on AC. It does this while I'm in the middle of listening to something. also power and volume control poorly designed=hart to reach and find and in a weird place [ DONNA S  Dec 06, 2013 ]
no hiss. we use it with a sony sound bar on sports and movies. i have to rate it as excellent znd i have tried it against other head sets [ ALBIN A  Dec 06, 2013 ]
Hi James, I can't hear hiss or any background noise. They are as noise free as any wired phones I own. I love them. martinm [ Martin  Dec 06, 2013 ]
