Our take on the Sennheiser RS 180 by Crutchfield's Kristen Schaub
Great headphone sound goes wireless
Sennheiser's RS 180 wireless headphones let you enjoy superb sound that won't disturb family members or housemates. Advanced "Open-Aire" speaker technology delivers clear, natural-sounding detail, while the Automatic Level Control smooths out variances in volume — quiet dialog is easier to hear, and loud commercials and explosions are kept in check. The luxurious velour earpads sit around your ears to seal out external noise. And with a listening range of up to 320 feet, you can roam freely throughout your living area — make popcorn during TV commercials, look through a photo album in another room, or stay up for a late-night listening session while your spouse sleeps soundly next to you.
Exceptionally "Kleer™" wireless technology
The RS 180s use Kleer wireless technology to deliver uncompressed stereo sound. Unlike other wireless technologies, Kleer delivers lossless, CD-quality digital audio, which means you won't be able to tell the difference between these headphones and your wired ones. Multi-receiver mode allows up to four people using Sennheiser Kleer headphones to listen to the same audio source, so you can easily share music, movies, or TV shows with your friends and family. (Add-on HDR 180 headsets available separately.)
Never misplace your headphones with the multi-purpose transmitter
The multi-purpose transmitter keeps your headphones charged up and ready to go. It also doubles as a docking station, so you'll never forget where you put them. Wireless setup is easy — just connect the transmitter to a spare headphone jack or RCA audio output using the included cable. Then plug the transmitter into an AC power outlet. Automatic tuning does the rest, pairing with the headphones for interference-free sound.
I am really pleased with the wireless headphones, RS 180, recently purchased from Crutchfield. They are comfortable, the sound is terrific, and they are very easy to move from one application to another.

Average Customer Review(s):
Thanks for submitting your review
Overview: The Sennheiser RS 180 RF stereo hi-fi wireless headphone system offers transparent and balanced sound imaging with excellent bass response making it ideal for hi-fi, home cinema, and TV use. The Sennheiser RS 180 wireless headphone system is made up of a pair of wireless headphones (HDR 180) and a multi-purpose transmitter (TX 180) which also functions as an charging cradle and docking station. The RS 180 features Automatic Level Control which compensates for variances in the volume of program material to enhance speech intelligibility. The RS 180 utilizes Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless audio transmission, offering a range of up to 320 feet, audiophile-grade sound, and reception to four optional pairs of Sennheiser Kleer headphones. The Sennheiser RS 180 offers automatic, interference-free pairing between the headphone and transmitter.
Note: The 320' range is determined in optimum conditions, in an open area with no obstacles between the transmitter and headphones. Typical performance in a home environment will be somewhat less.
Kleer Wireless Transmission Technology: The Sennheiser RS 180 headphone system features the digital wireless audio transmission technology from Kleer (with a range up to 320'). Kleer technology transmits uncompressed audio over a robust 2.4 GHz digital link (2.4-2.8GHz), enabling you to enjoy your music without the hassle of cables. Kleer technology will not interfere with wireless networks or other 2.4 GHz devices. Kleer's uncompressed digital wireless transmission delivers CD-quality sound.
Wireless Headphones: The RS 180's wireless headphones utilizes an Open-Air speaker system that mimics the acoustic properties of hi-fi speakers for a truly immersing, realistic sound quality. The Open-Air speaker system delivers the most natural sounding private wireless audio experience possible. The over-the-ear design also prevents sound leakage. Velour earpads and an adjustable cushioned headband provide a comfortable fit. The headphones receive their wireless stereo audio signal from the included transmitter. The wireless headphones are powered by two supplied rechargeable NiMH AAA batteries (for up to 24 hrs). You can place the headphones on the multi-purpose transmitter to recharge the batteries (approx. 16 hrs).
Note: The headphones can also be powered by AAA alkaline (1.5V) batteries if the rechargeable batteries become exhausted.
Multi-Purpose Transmitter: The transmitter connects to your television's or audio system's audio output and then transmits the audio signal wirelessly to the RS 180's wireless headphones. The transmitter also functions as a charging cradle and docking station. The transmitter is powered by standard household AC current via the included AC power adapter.
Automatic Level Control: Automatic Level Control (ALC) automatically compensates for variances in program material volume for optimum speech intelligibility at all times.
Multi-Receiver Mode: Up to 4 Sennheiser Kleer-compatible headphones can be connected to one transmitter so 4 people can listen to the same sound source. Each headphone has independent volume controls when simultaneously paired with the transmitter.
Auto Power Off: If there is no signal from the transmitter for more than 5 minutes, the headphones automatically switch to standby mode. If the headphones are outside the transmission range or switched to off for more than 5 minutes, the transmitter automatically switches to standby mode.
- Multi-Function: With the multi-function button, you can switch the transmitter on, to standby mode, set the transmitter to multi-user operation, and associate the transmitter.
- ALC: Activates the Automatic Level Control function.
- Attenuator: The attenuator switch allows you to select 0dB or -8dB to match the incoming audio signal of your audio source for optimal sound performance.
- Multi-Function: With the multi-function button, you can switch the headphones on, to standby mode, set the headphones to multi-user operation, mute the headphones, and associate the headphones.
- Balance: Balance control for right/left volume adjustment.

- Audio In: 3.5mm input to connect to your TV using the supplied mini-jack cable or optional mini-jack to RCA cable.

These work great with glasses. [ JANICE Aug 28, 2015 ]
My wife and I each have a pairbof the seeheiser and we both wear glasses. We have had no problems with fit or comfort. [ Brian Aug 25, 2015 ]
My wife uses them routinely with no discomfort, although her glasses have narrow, metal frames. I've had no discomfort with my plastic frames the few times I've used the earphones. [ Rolland Aug 25, 2015 ]
I've had a problem with glasses and over-ear headphones as well. The RS180 headphones don't give me any problems. I think it's because the cups are oval shape which gives some extra room over the top of the ears. I've been able to wear my rs180s comfortably for 5-6 hours with glasses, no problem. [ DARREN Aug 25, 2015 ]
Hi Ted, Some listeners (who wear glasses) may experience a little discomfort after prolonged use. We recommend that you take a break in between listening to albums or watching movies. [ Rosmadi Aug 25, 2015 ] Works for Sennheiser
The headset is very comfortable when is comes to softness. No trouble pinching the ears as the cups are large enough to cover my ear entirely. The only trouble I've experienced is when using the headset when wearing glasses (squeezes the loop that goes behind the ear and hurts after long use). It's also a little bit hot in the summer time and gets sweaty if working around the house. [ DARREN Jun 09, 2015 ]
My wife loves these headphones and thinks that they are very comfortable. [ ANDREW M Jun 09, 2015 ]
The earphone covers are soft like velour......so I have found them to be quite comfortable. Also the overall headset is fairly light weight.....so that helps with comfort. Hope you find this input helpful ! [ James Jun 09, 2015 ]
They were a gift for my wife, whom I would call fairly sensitive. I just asked her if they were comfortable and she said Yes. She wears them for typically two or three hours at a stretch. [ Charles Jun 09, 2015 ]
I Wear the headset for several hours at a time. After long periods they sometimes feel warm over the ears but they are very comfortable. [ Charles Jun 09, 2015 ]
The transmitter base only has an analog input. Here is an excerpt from the CNET review: The dark-silver plastic transmitter/battery charger base also doubles as a headphone stand. Connectivity to the base is limited to one 3.5mm analog input and stereo RCA outputs, but you can hook up a TV, Blu-ray player, computer, laptop, or tablet to the transmitter. The power supply comes with with four power receptacle adapters, one each for the U.S., U.K., Australia, and the EU. One input may prove inconvenient for some buyers, but in practice I don't consider it a real limitation when the RS 180 is used with a TV or AV receiver. You probably already have all of your sources, such as a cable box, games, Blu-ray player, etc. hooked up to your TV or AV receiver; if you do, then just connect the RS 180 to your TV or receiver. If you absolutely insist on digital connectivity, go for Sennheiser's RS 220 wireless headphones -- that model has two digital inputs. [ Starling May 17, 2015 ]
I don't believe you would need headphone amplifier and that would be dependent on your hearing lose. I have very slight hearing lose and find these to be adequate for my needs. As well as the sound has excellent quality. [ CHARLES Jan 04, 2015 ]
Thank you, Michael, for your response. Now I am even closer to placing an order. [ Steve Jan 03, 2015 ]
I bought these for my husband who also has hearing loss. He would have the TV so loud, it would drive me crazy. They are also nice if I want to read and stay in the same room. You and your wife will love these. They have a very good sound and will be loud enough for you. I have used them and they are very comfortable. They are worth the money. [ JANICE Jan 03, 2015 ]
Steve, Further to my answer.......I believe I said HS180 as the model # while in fact I should have said RS180.......sorry about that! [ James Jan 03, 2015 ]
Steve, Like you I have some hearing loss problems which caused differing TV volume requirements for my wife and I. The volume range of HS180(without further amplification0 has been more than adequate for my loss situation(which I would characterize as mild to moderate)However, I don't know how extensive/serious your loss is.....you'll have to judge that. Also the "Automatic Level Control"(dynamic compression) function of the HS180 works quite well to make speech clearer and more understandable. Balance feature is also helpful in compensating differing hearing loss amounts between your ears. I hope this was helpful. [ James Jan 03, 2015 ]
The headset has has an independent volume control [ Hall Jan 02, 2015 ]
My wife is also hearing impaired, which is why I bought these as a gift last Christmas. She loves these headphones, and they have made huge difference in her ability to enjoy TV. We did not purchase an amplifier and they work fine. We would definitely recommend this product. [ ANDREW M Jan 02, 2015 ]
Steve P. These are excellent headphones. Comfortable even with glasses on. The volume should be more than ample even with hearing loss. Crutchfield also has a great return policy so if you find they do not work for your application you can always return them. I really enjoy my RS 180's and I am sure you will be happy as well. [ JOHN Jan 02, 2015 ]
I like mine a lot and I can adjust the volume from my headphones with the buttons on the headphones. I can also adjust the balance from left to right. I also have a hearing loss and these headphones have helped a lot without having to have hearing aids. I use mine every day. If you look at the ratings they are rated at 4.5 stars. [ PATRICK M Jan 02, 2015 ]
Hi Steve. I also suffer a hearing loss and the Sennheiser headphones made a huge difference in enjoying TV. The volume is adjustable and full column is very loud and even too much for me. I also bought another set if phones for my wife who enjoys the extra clarity of sound even though she has good hearing. I'm sure you will not be disappointed. [ Brian Jan 02, 2015 ]
IMHO, it's nice and loud.. There's a switch on the sending that will even increase the gain. I have the gain set on low and the volume is fine. Depending on your TV, etc you may have some delay in the earphones compared to the tele speakers I can compensate for this in the sound settings of my tele Hope this helps [ GEORGE Jan 02, 2015 ]
I bought the item because of my wife's hearing problem, and she finds it quite satisfactory and an improvement over an older model of another brand. However, the control buttons are quite small and take a bit of getting used to, and, if one does not use the item fairly often, it may be easy to forget how everything works. In brief: it's a good product, but controls are not the most intuitive or ergonomic imaginable! [ Rolland Jan 02, 2015 ]
I purchased these as a gift for my wife so I am not the primary user, and she is not super technical. She has very slight hearing loss and she says they are plenty loud enough for her. Apparently the volume is not set on the headphones themselves but rather on your amplifier, receiver or TV. FWIW, she is real happy with the headphones. I just asked her and she said "I love 'em!" [ Charles Jan 02, 2015 ]
4 answers I am looking to purchase a quality wireless headphone that can function, both- for listening to my TV and for listening to music streamed through my cell phone (Pandora/Music Library). Are the Sennheiser 180's or 220's able to perform both tasks?? Is there anything that would work, say, on an airplane and at home? [ On Dec 09, 2014 ]
To M I'm not the right one to ask, since I only use them for TV,but main reason I like them Is I have about 50% hearing loss in my left ear . The balance control could not compensate enough ,so I added an antenuator to the right side input and this makes it work great for me. Good luck I hope some one will be of more help [ LARRY M Dec 11, 2014 ]
I only use these for listening to TV and movies, not sure if you can stream music from cell phone, nor am I aware of how they would work on an airplane. With that said, as far as my experience and usage, they are an awesome set of wireless headphones; great range, wonderful sound and lightweight. I hope this helps. All the best, Bruce [ BRUCE Dec 10, 2014 ]
These are great headphones and would work for the TV and cell phone (if you plug the phone into the headphone's base unit) But these would not be practical for airplane use because it has an AC powered base unit (the thing the headphones are resting on in the picture). That's a lot to deal with on a plane. Look to Bose noise-cancelling (corded) headphones instead for plane use. [ MICHAEL Dec 10, 2014 ]
No problem listening to TV - that's what I use mine for. Not sure about using them on an airplane to listen to streaming music. [ RONNIE Dec 10, 2014 ]
I have never had a problem with mine and they are about 4-5 months old. They work flawlessly and are the best thing I purchased for everyday TV listening. [ GEORGE Apr 21, 2014 ]
Ours has worked fine, so have no idea. However, the controls are very non-intuitive and non-ergonomic, so I could see how a user could easily make a mistake, as my wife has at times. That seems unlikely in this case. Does seem a shame that company does not consider needs of older users in designing larger, more intuitive controls for an otherwise fine product. [ Rolland Apr 21, 2014 ]
I purchased my first (and only) Sennheiser RS 180 several months ago. Upon setup, I had difficulty following the directions - I think overly complicated. Called the Crutchfield team for assistance. Once I got connected to the right person with some Sennheiser experience, I received the help I needed. Basically, once you turn on the unit and attempt to "pair" transmitter with headset, it takes about 3 seconds to connect. I was impatient and kept button mashing so never got connected. They are very good with one minor inconvenience: you have to push a button on the transmitter. My other units did not require this. [ STEVE Apr 21, 2014 ]
My unit has worked just fine from the beginning and still works, no problem. I'm sorry I can't be of further help. Good luck. [ RICK W Apr 21, 2014 ]
6 answers Whenever I do search for 5.1 and/or 7.1 headphones that i can use for television usage these are always in the search results. the problem is that i can find any documentation stating that these headphones have 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. do these headphones have more than 2 speakers? [ Dae Apr 19, 2014 ]
No they do not have more than 2 speakers (1 per ear). But because they do have an open design for the backing they sound very good (not an in your head type sound). If you want a surround type expereince with these headphones, use the surround processing for headphones from your receiver, if it is available to you. Personaly I wouldn't fret about the amount of speakers or the the surround processing, they just sound great through regular stereo for movies or music. [ MOISES Apr 23, 2014 ]
I wish I could help on your specific question, but I do not know the answer. What I do know is that these headphones have made a remarkable impact on my television viewing and they perform amazingly. I highly recommend them. All the best, Bruce [ BRUCE Apr 20, 2014 ]
I do not know if the system has more than one speaker. But I can say the system is full of flaws. I have returned the unite two times and still have the same problem. No sound from the head set. After returning the unit two times, the third set has no sound. I would look for another system Bobby J. Wade [ BOBBY J Apr 20, 2014 ]
Two speaker only... [ DON Apr 20, 2014 ]
No, there are only two total speakers, one each side. My wife and I love the RS 180's for watching TV. We think the sound is great. They are very comfortable and can be worn for hours at a time. The battery life is amazing. They will last all day. I am one that does not use them with the volume very loud. If you use them you do need to turn the TV volume off because you will get a slight sound delay from the headphones. We only bought one set so I cannot speak for multiple sets with one base. Many people talk about the buttons being too close, but it is really not an issue when you get used to it. We are very pleased and we would highly recommend them. They are fairly expensive but well worth it to us. [ DANNY Apr 20, 2014 ]
Just two speakers-left and right. For true surround mix, you need 5-7 real speakers mixing the audio in the room. [ MICHAEL Apr 20, 2014 ]
4 answers Moving my recording studio to an apartment. No more boom boom in the room, so I need accurate wireless headphone monitoring. I have used Sennheiser wired in the past with acceptable results. Will these headphones add sweetening and compression to the audio to make them sound good? I need to hear exactly what is there in my mix, not what sounds sweet. A few hundred dollars in difference wouldn't matter if it is worth it. Input anyone? [ Trevis W. Jan 20, 2014 ]
I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ON THIS I LIKE BEAT,S PRO BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT A GREAT SET OF CAN,S GET THE GRADO STATEMENT SERIES HEADPHONE,S JUST UNDER A GRAND. (BUT THIS MIGHT BE WORTH THAT GRAND TO YOU) ALSO IF YOU ARE IN THE STUDIO GO DIRECT NOT WIRLESS UNLESS YOU HAVE NO CHOICE. [ ROBERT P Jan 27, 2014 ]
Trevis, I bought the RS180 headset & also the DR180 for my wife and I to use. We are rather hard of hearing and these made all of the difference in the world. No question we hear everything now. Associating the headsets to the transmitter is another story. I am constantly having trouble getting them to associate but in all fairness this could be an age problem, we are up there in years. It all has to do with the multi power switch and the touch it takes to do it right. Sennheiser has a good UTube vidio on how to do it and I am getting better but it is frustrating!! [ ART L Jan 20, 2014 ]
I only use my RS-180 with my TV. It provides excellent sound -- INFINITELY better than the TV speakers (Panasonic plasma). I have not used it with my (music) sound system so I can't offer comments for that type of application. [ DANIEL A Jan 20, 2014 ]
in my opinion, these baby's have a raw, true sound. nothing is glossed over. for the money I think they're hard to beat. I like them better than my [wired] Bose. they are also very lightweight and can be worn for a looooonnnnng time. peace out [ DAVID L Jan 20, 2014 ]
We always leave speakers on--wife uses the headphones because of hearing deficit. Only VERY rarely--and for ? reason--have I noted latency problem. (Never had this problem with older set of different make either.) Don't really think this likely a significant problem. [ Rolland Jan 03, 2015 ]
Will the open air design of the RS180 be too loud as to bother people ie: like at a Starbucks etc.? [ Steve K. Aug 08, 2014 ]
no [ evilyn Dec 16, 2013 ]
I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but I use the headphones with the speakers off. Another words, I plug into the front of my Denon Receiver which is where the headphone jack is located. It automatically turns off the sound of the front speakers and produces the sound through the headphones. You can't have both at the same time unless you plug into the back of the receiver output. That didn't work for me. I think the sound is excellent through the headphones, very crisp and clear. I hope this helps. [ RICK W Dec 16, 2013 ]
Ray - I'm not sure I know what a "latency problem" is, but if it means a delay in the sound coming from the earphones as compared to the sound from the TV speaker, the answer is no. There is no delay; the phone sound is in perfect sync with the TV speakers. I do have two problems with my new headphones that you should know about: 1) the ear pieces are very UNcomfortable. They do not sit well over my ears. I will have to modify them to make them comfortable. 2) The controls are awkwardly located on the right ear piece. To adjust anything, it is necessary to remove the headset from my head. Vern [ Vernon Dec 15, 2013 ]
I typically don't have both the speakers and head set on at the same time. Either way the audio seems in sink with the video. I would have to say there is not any noticeable latency. [ CHARLES Dec 15, 2013 ]
I have purchase this (Sennheiser RS 180) with an extra set of headphones and I have had no interference with my wi-fi network ( which includes 2.5 ghz and 5 Ghz). [ MOISES Dec 17, 2013 ]
We stream Netflix, use two laptops and a wireless printer, and recently acquired a ROKU. The Sennheiser's are used daily, and we've never experienced an interference problem. [ RICHARD L Dec 11, 2013 ]
gary, I have had this model since February and another Sennheiser model for several years. There is absolutely no interference with wi-fi networks. The sound is extremely good on these and there has never been any loss of signal or sound quality, regardless of where I go in the house. [ ROBERT Dec 10, 2013 ]
I don't know - I don't have wifi , but I can't imagine that they would. they sound really really good. be aware that they are made in China, not Germany like my old ones. [ DAVID L Dec 10, 2013 ]
No [ RALPH Dec 10, 2013 ]
I have no problems with them,love them [ RICHARD Dec 10, 2013 ]
I haven't noticed any interference with my Wi-Fi. I love the headset--comfortable and the sound is great! [ CRAIG R Dec 10, 2013 ]
There is no issues / interference with the WIFI system(Linksys EA4500) or other systems (cell phones, etc.) I use. These are excellent headsets. [ ROGER Dec 10, 2013 ]
No.I have this unit in 2 homes with wi-fi network. [ DIANNE Dec 10, 2013 ]
No, it won't interfere with your wifi. These are awesome headphones that I highly recommend. The buttons that control volume are a little tricky because they're very close together, but they sound great! [ PAM Dec 10, 2013 ]
I have had mine for quite a few months now and it has not interfered with my wi-fi network - you won't be disappointed in this product - it works very well. [ Charles Dec 10, 2013 ]
Not directly, no. It has RCA and mini jack inputs only. [ MICHAEL Dec 10, 2013 ]
