Overview

Our take on the Sennheiser Urbanite XL Wireless

"Street-ready" is a term you'd expect to refer to a motor vehicle. But it's a great way to describe the Sennheiser Urbanite XL Wireless headphones. No, you can't drive them. But these headphones offer a bunch of features that make them ideal for the urban landscape. They connect wirelessly to your smartphone via Bluetooth, so you won't be slowed down by dangling cords. Their sound is powerful, with a heavy dose of deep bass that's perfect for cutting through background noise. They're extremely comfortable, so you can wear them for long periods. And they're durable, with an ultra-flexible headband that's not going to crack under pressure. Sounds street-ready to me.

No wires needed: the Urbanite XL Wireless headphones connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Touch-panel earcup keeps you in control

You won't find any earcup buttons for controlling the Urbanite XL Wireless. Instead, you can take calls and control music just by tapping and swiping on the right earcup. Just tap the earcup to play a song or answer a call. Want to adjust the volume? Imagine there's a giant volume fader on the earcup. Slide your finger slowly up and down and dial in the volume to your liking. The built-in battery provides up to 25 hours of listening and recharges via USB. A cable is included in case your battery runs down — it even has an in-line remote and microphone so you can still make hands-free calls.

Comfortable, over-ear fit

The "XL" in Urbanite XL refers to the large earcups that fit completely over your ears. This design not only allows for larger drivers capable of delivering more detailed sound, but it also offers a luxuriously comfortable fit. The headband is as flexible as almost any we've ever seen, so it's durable without squeezing your skull into submission. There's another benefit to the glove-like fit of these headphones: they do a great job of blocking out external noise. The closed-back design of the XL earcups offers excellent noise isolation without any electronic noise cancellation. When you're not listening, the folding design makes them compact enough to keep in your bag so you can keep them handy.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After trying lots of of brands in the $200-$300 range this was the best fit for me. I consider myself a critical quality product consumer. I mainly wanted Bluetooth with high quality sound. They may not be for you if your looking for the latest and coolest looking headphones (Like Beats) but comparing the overall sound quality, the XL is better.

Pros: Sound Range and quality Sturdy Bluetooth

Cons: Slightly Heavier but uncomfortable

Controls Don't work

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These headphones sound great. The one issue I have is that it is all or nothing with them. I cannot shut them off, I cannot control the volume and I cannot change songs. All things they are advertised to do. The thing holding me back from returning them is that I use them a lot and don't want to have to send them in and wait a few weeks to get them back. Aside from needing to use my tablet to control them they sound great.

Pros: Great Sound Solid Build

Cons: Controls don't work

Great headphones but heavy and headband to tight causing ear pain after listening for a few minutes. Sound and build great. Touch controls a little flakey.

Pros: Good sound, long play time, well built

Cons: Uncomfortable on ear

Great headphones, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love these headphones, and yet I'll be returning them. Briefly: the sound is fantastic. Warm and balanced. I own the over-ear Momentums too and I would say that, while it is true that the bass might be just a tiny bit overemphasised on the Urbanites, the difference is truly quite minor. Also, they seem to 'settle' or 'break in' nicely after a few hours of listening. They are incredibly comfortable and sturdy (but the lack of hard case is a disgrace). Comfier even than the Momentums. Bluetooth is done right: I used to have a pair of Sonys BT that required awkward long-presses and prayers to connect to your iPhone. On the Urbanites, you just flick the switch, and it says "connected!" in a pleasant British accent. Perfect. No other buttons to press. Volume and play/pause is on the touch-sensitive part of the ear cup. I had read somewhere that people found those gestures hard to figure, but I am absolutely in love with them. Some people are always going to find something hard to figure... In short, I only have positive things to say about these headphones. But there is a sad but. Their style, with the thick band extending over the earcups, means they look extremely "wide" when on, if that makes sense. They literally make my head way wider than it is tall. Now, this is of course extremely subjective, but in my case, the problem is enough to rule out ever wearing them in public. Of course, for the cost of the BT headphone, that is a dealbreaker. But I will be very sad to let them go.

Pros: Everything.

Cons: Style (width/size) might be a dealbreaker for some.

I wanted to love this, but...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality was subpar for my style of music listening (sound is subjective). For electronic music the bass didn't have a huge presence. I had to turn it up in my EQ, but the drivers in the headphones couldn't take on too much boost. For rock, indie, metal, etc the sound was better in the bass. But, the mids seemed to be far in the back which forced me to turn up the music. The headphones look cool, but they are bulky. And made me look like a cyborg because they came off my ears so much. Solid build. I had no problems there. As for comfort, my ears a bigger than average. So, the ear cups did not fit my ears. The cups ended up pressing against the edges of my ears, so it hurt over time. Couldn't wear it longer than 1 hour. It did, however, reduce the noise around me. Not sure about sound leakage, though.

Pros: Build quality and looks

Cons: Underwhelming bass. Recessed mids. Trailed off treble. Rigid design hurt the comfort part of it.

Features

Overview: The Sennheiser Urbanite XL Over-ear Bluetooth headphones are stylish, high-quality headphones. Larger than the Urbanite on-ear headphones, the Urbanite XLs are lightweight and comfortable, with durable stainless steel hinges and aluminum sliders. They're made for people on the go, and can withstand rough treatment from everyday use. When not in use, you can fold your Urbanite XL headphones and store them in the included soft cloth storage pouch.

Design: The Urbanite XL Over-ear headphone has a closed-back, circum-aural (over-ear) design which isolates much of the background noise. The low 18-ohm impedance allow the headphones to play portable devices at high volumes without overdriving the device's tiny amp.

Bluetooth: Built-in Bluetooth 4.0 technology allows you to wirelessly listen to your music or phone calls. With compatible Near-Field Communications (NFC) devices, Bluetooth pairing is as easy as touching the device to the left ear cup. Up to 8 different devices can be paired to, including 2 devices simultaneously. The headphones have a wireless range of approximately 33 feet (10 meters). Supported codecs include aptX and SBC.

Touch-sensitive Panel: The right ear cup features a state-of-the-art intuitive touch-sensitive control panel. Sliding a finger in an up and down motion adjusts the volume. Call and music functions can be controlled by tapping or touching the panel.

Included Cable: The Urbanite XL Wireless Over-ear headphones are equipped with a 47" audio cable with a right-angled 3.5mm plug. The in-line Smart Remote has a slider for controlling the volume, and a single button for controlling the call and music functions. The cable connects to the left earcup via a 2.5mm sub-mini plug that twist-locks in place to prevent accidental disconnection.

Rechargeable Battery: The headphones are powered by a Lithium-Polymer rechargeable battery with a battery life of up to 25 hours talk time or music playback, or 15 days standby. You can charge the battery with the included USB cable at many USB charging ports, including computers, AC-USB adapters, and 12-volt mobile USB adapters.

Why did you buy this?

Best over ear wireless headphone on the market. I have tried numerous brands of headphones and these definitely deliver crisp sound and deep bass that doesn't overpower the clarity of music. These are perfect for any style of music and overall are a well balanced headphone. [ Jonathan  Sep 27, 2017 ]

I was looking for a well built pair of headphones and I found them. [ Gary  Jan 20, 2016 ]
Price and sound quality is excellant for bluetooth headphones. Clean lows unlike Beats. Tap headphone controls are simple and convenient to use. A bit heavier than other over the ear headphones, but comfortable. [ Gary  Dec 03, 2015 ]

1 question already asked

These headphones are not that great for workouts. Especially if you're doing a lot of cardio. They are really bulky and heavy. [ Zain  Mar 31, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: These headphones are very comfortable and the quality of the sound is amazing . too big for working out? I guess that all depends on your activities .(fast aerobics might not be the best . stationary bike sure!) If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Mar 28, 2015 ]  Staff
