It simply stays put

Do you take your navigator out of your car often? The nüvi 3597LMTHD's mount presents a solution that'll reduce frustration and save time. The powered base has an integrated magnetic mount that connects instantly to the metallic rear of the navigator so it'll stay securely in place as long as you need it to. When you're ready to move the navigator out of the car, just give it a gentle pull to detach it from the mount and you're on your way.

Garmin's HD Digital Traffic keeps you ahead of congestion

The nüvi 3597LMTHD offers free lifetime traffic updates using Garmin's HD Digital Traffic service — you'll get new information up to every 30 seconds, which is far more often than most every other service available. This service offers up to three times more side road coverage than most services, and incorporates data from HD Radio™ sources, active devices on the road, historical traffic patterns, and other factors like construction, concerts, and sporting events to give you a comprehensive look at congestion in most metropolitan areas.

You'll see traffic updates on the side of your navigator's screen, so you can also keep an eye out for your next maneuver. And you'll hear spoken warnings about conditions ahead as they develop. Garmin HD Digital Traffic is also voice activated, so it can respond to the sound of your spoken words. Best of all, you won't have to pay a penny more for this service over the life of your nüvi.

Garmin nuvi 3597LMTHD portable navigator - Garmin HD Digital Traffic

Control with your vocal cords instead of your hands

Voice-activated navigation is quite simple: with one spoken command, you can "wake up" the navigator to respond to your voice. You can search through menus, then input addresses and destinations without touching the screen. The nüvi 3597LMTHD will respond to your words intelligently. Built-in Bluetooth lets you sync your compatible phone to the navigator for hands-free conversations you carry on through the nüvi's integrated microphone and speaker.

Smartphone users can download Garmin's free Smartphone Link app to their device and connect to the nüvi 3597LMTHD. When paired, the navigator can use your phone's existing data plan to share information such as saved and recently found locations, where you parked, and your current destination. You can then use your phone to give you step-by-step directions back to your car in a large parking lot, for example, or import destinations to your navigator from your phone. You can also launch Garmin Live Services from the app, which give you local weather reports, live traffic updates, real-time photos from traffic cameras, area gas prices, and nearby parking help. Some Garmin Live Services require a subscription. Data charges may apply for using Smartphone Link — you'll want to check with your service provider.

Spoken directions you can follow

The nüvi 3597LMTHD offers Garmin Real Directions with Garmin Real Voice, a combination that helps keep you relaxed as you drive. Real Directions voice prompts speak the instructions to you like a friend would, using easy-to-see landmarks, buildings and businesses, and traffic lights, rather than streets with tiny signs that you might not see in time. With Real Voice technology, you'll hear directions spoken in a personable, human-sounding voice that you'll easily understand.

Get the best possible picture

The nüvi 3597LMTHD's high-resolution 5" glass display makes it easy to follow along, and you can view its maps in either portrait or landscape orientation. You'll have access to preloaded maps of the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and several Caribbean islands, along with millions of points of interest; you can even add your own favorite stopping points. You can find and select businesses right on the map screen without having to go through time-wasting menus. Speed limit displays with visual warnings on major roads help keep you in check, and you'll even be notified of school zones.

The multi-touch glass display's pinch-to-zoom interface lets you scale and move the map easily for the best view. And with one tap of the screen, you can pull up details for services that lie ahead on your route, including restaurants, gas stations, and more. You also get up to four free map updates per year to keep you current on road changes.

Absolutely Amazing Little Machine!

John D. from Washington DC on 10/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had a few GPS units in my life, and most do what they are supposed to do, but most have always been a little slow, struggled to keep up with complicated cities like Washington DC and Detroit, and are a pain to update. This unit, on the other hand, has a wireless dismount, you can pull it off its station to program it and there is no wire attached to it, and it magnetically clicks back into place, even if your aim is off! Futher, it has a beautiful picture, clear and bright screen that is easy to read in both the day and at night. Further, is has a great 3D building feature once you are in a downtown city center that helps you visually find your "target" by showing you what the actual, 3D buildings look like in relation to your car. It also has 100% accurate road lanes while aproaching exits and ramps. The bluetooth feature and phone synking features are awesome, though the speaker for phone calls is a little weak and hard to understand if the person you are talking to speaks softly or mumbles.

Pros: Bright and Clear Screen, Small, Voice Programing, Phone Synk, Magnetic Mounting, Thin, Responsive Touch Screen

Cons: Poor/Weak Bluetooth Speaker

Excellent display

Ken from Bloomington, IL on 8/31/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The display is a big improvement over the previous units and alerts for schools adds a nice touch. Bluetooth capability is also nice but the speaker and microphone could be improved.

Pros: Display, instant on and POI (including schools alerts) are nice features.

Cons: The speaker and microphone could be a lot better.

One Beautiful, Complicated GPS

Don B from Asheville, NC on 7/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my third Garmin automotive GPS. It is a conspicuous upgrade from my old ones. Looks like an iPhone. Its operating system is noticeably different from the oldies, which causes me difficulty doing things like searching for a state park, that had been easy. The database seems to be arranged differently. Several of my searches fail, then succeed when I do them differently.

Pros: Rapid processor, fast start-up, computes routes quickly. Works indoors with battery power, helping me plan trips. Bright, clear screen shows detailed maps and pictures.

Cons: Highly reflective screen hard to read driving with polarized sunglasses. Owner's Manual tells how to make various settings and selections which I find difficult to do - the device needs to be prodded and begged to execute some of my requests.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Garmin nüvi 3597LMTHD is very easy to use nice large screen and the voice command work well. I also thought the posted speed limit was helpful, doesn't work on all roads but a large majority of them.

Pros: Large screen, voice command, posted speed limit

Cons: download very slow, traffic doesn't work not sure if it location?

Garmin nüvi® 3597LMTHD

Anna D from Manila,Ut on 6/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the Garmin is easy to use and pretty accurate on all the roads and signs. The voice recognition works pretty good, but not all the time. It is by far better than any I have used. Much better than any stock navigation systems. Very glad I bought it.

Pros: Easy to use. It picks up satellite signals fast. No issue with glare for us. Like that passenger can use it while driving. Love the magnetic snap on and off bracket it is easy to store.

Cons: Voice recognition doesn't always pick up.

Bdest GPS I have owned!

Frankm from Charlottesville, VA on 6/9/2014

The directions and calculations are excellent. The Voice Command is the best for navigating addresses and POI's. I never enter and address manually anymore. The magnetic mount is the best mount, you just detach it from the base and reattach it without worrying about plugging it in. The cable is plugged into the base not the unit.

Pros: Screen Display, directions, voice command, base

Cons: Traffic could be a little wider area. My old Tom Tom covered a wider area.

Love this GPS

LuLu from Rossville, GA on 5/1/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Garmin Nuvi 3597 has a large, clear screen and is very easy to operate. I no longer have to drive while looking for a street sign. A pleasant female voice directs me turn by turn. I am very pleased with my purchase for it was money well spent.

Pros: Voice command app.

Cons: None at present.

Wonderful Graphics! Fast Processor

BGR from New Bedford, MA on 4/10/2014

I originally bought a 2797, but returned it because the display was not clear enough for older eyes. Got the 3597 for the retina type display. The display is wonderful. Bright, high contrast with very fine detail. The processor is noticeably faster than the 2797, it is ready to go almost instantly. For me, the voice control has worked very well, nice to be able to search for POIs while driving, instead of taking the unit down to change settings, especially if you are by yourself. The magnetic mount is a wonderful improvement , too. So much better than the release on the 2797. Just hold the unit near the base and it jumps onto it. Other reviews have covered the features very well. The fast processor speed is able to stay ahead of your driving, even if you get off the route and it has to calculate a new route, it still stays ahead of you, and gives enough time to get in the right lane for a turn or exit. Other reviewers have commented on the slow downloads and updates. Mine started slow, but I had to pause the download for a couple of minutes. When I came back and restarted, the speed picked up instantly, and the whole process including map download took 25 minutes. I don't know what happened, but that was a great improvement. The general conclusion is that this unit is worth every penny of the price difference with the great display, fast processor, and quick magnetic mount. It is also thin enough to carry in your pocket if you need use it to find your car in a parking lot.

Pros: Great display, long battery life, fast calculations, voice control, and an incredibly easy-to-use mount. Surprised to find it had maps of "T" routes in Boston.

Cons: None

Excellent GPS

DV from Charlottesville, VA on 3/23/2014

This GPS is very user friendly and the voice command feature is a pleasure to use. The unit is fast in data input and suggestions pop up with only a few characters entered. It's easy to find info on the display. The magnetic attachment point on the back makes mounting or dismounting a breeze. The literature in the box references an app to download that alerts the owner to map or device upgrade info, which, makes keeping the device operating at optimum functionality very easy.

Pros: The unit reminds me of my i-phone in quality of construction and easy functionality.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this GPS to replace a very old one (that still works, by the way and is being handed down in my family). I love the big bright screen and it is so easy to use. I also love the traffic and congestion avoidance options. Glad I bought this!

Pros: Pretty much everything about it is a PRO

Cons: So far, none that I have to report.

Cons: Cannot send audio from phone to the car stereo speakers via FM channel as my previous Garmin did

Ron from Northern Colorado on 1/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently received this new Garmin GPS and have been impressed with the ease of use and the 5 inch screen display. I have set-up multiple saved locations and have taken trips using several, with changes on each trip, sometimes changing them mid-route and the unit has functioned very well. The manual is extensive and requires some time to get to really know all the functions available, but the voice commands are in my opinion the best feature.

Pros: Voice commands, clear display, good "on-the-move" changes are easily done. Easy to find gas stations, ATM's, and any places on regular shopping trips.

Cons: The unit attracts attention and needs to be hidden when the vehicle is parked in most areas. But since the Crutchfield purchase came with a carrying case, removing and carrying the GPS unit is easily done.

Best Garmin Yet!

Bill B from Peoria, AZ on 1/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Garmin is wonderful. Faster than our previous. No "Recalculating" to give it time to think. Nice lane by lane display. The newer larger screen is perfect. Big enough to be easily readable, but not so big as to block your road vision. Great GPS!

Pros: Near instant usability..hardly any "boot" time. Accurate (ymmv) easy to read screen.

Cons: I just wish they would figure out an easier way to save and call up favorite places. That said. It was not enough of a con to lower the review by a star.

very portable gps

awesomepelican from Minneapolis, MN on 12/30/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The GPS is very light and slimmer than our previous one. We used the GPS last night to go to a restaurant. the address of the restaurant came up quickly once the name was typed in. The voice of the GPS is clear and pleasant. It readjusted quickly to changes as we deviated from the instructions and took a short cut. We have not checked all the options yet, but it was easy to get it started. When I ordered the GPS, I wasn't sure that it came with a car adapter (I didn't read all the details) so I ordered another one. My husband likes the optional adapter better. The one that came with the GPS is kinda bulky. He liked the magnetic option when placing the GPS on the enclosed stand. The box has written that it's made for the iphone, but we haven't looked up those features yet.

Pros: Slim, compact, clear voice directions, nice screen

Cons: The enclosed car charger is bulky.

Seriously Impressive

D.W. from Lake Lure, NC on 12/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have had Garmins since the introduction of the Ique 3600 ( 2002) We have had Flawless performance and reliability. This model has some amazing new features. We love the intuitive interface and display is crisp and clear, voice commands work! My husband travels extensively and this is a crucial tool, gone are the days of maps strewn across the backseat. I have terrible sense of direction so I use mine even when I know where I am going, coming home late one night We drove right into and active fire scene on a two lane road, fire trucks and police cars closed off our route home. If not for our Garmin we would have had to wait or go back the way we came, we just told the Garmin to detour and it took us around the fire on back roads we never knew were there, even a dirt road, it saved us a couple hours at least. Neither of us would venture out in a new city, town, or State without one (well, we would if we had to but would not be happy about it) I can not say enough about this product. I have to mention Crutchfield as well, we ordered very late on December 22nd and received it on the 24th. The evening news had a rep from UPS apologizing for not being able to deliver packages in time for Christmas. We chose standard shipping and did not expect it until afterChristmas. We have ordered from Crutchfield in the past and were impressed with Crutchfield's friendly knowledgeable advisers who are willing to go the extra mile. A wonderful shopping experience all.

Pros: Voice navigation, voice commands, lovely new screen with crisp vibrant colors and easy readability in any light, detour option, blue tooth, waypoints, intuitive interface, weather alerts, traffic alerts, lane assist... there are just too many to list.

Cons: Have not found any and do not expect to. Garmin is a leader in this technology for a reason.

Great device

James from East Moriches, NY on 12/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Garmin nüvi® 3597LMTHD is all what I read about it (did my homework before buying it). User friendly specially if you have used Gamins in the past. Haven't seen the traffic feature yet. Very happy with it (for now).

Pros: Crystal clear display (amazing HD).

Cons: Compare to my old 265W, once on destination, you press the top window to read what streets you'll be heading and turning. During that display, the 265W gives a window and the middle bottom "MAP" where you can see the whole view of the route from start to end. Don't know why the Garmin nüvi® 3597LMTHD doesn't have it. Personally I find that feature very useful to find short cuts specially when traffic is ahead of you.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this as in a result of my smart phone having no coverage for my GPS in a strange neighborhood that didn't look very safe and we needed to get air in a low tire. It arrived in a timely manner (3 days to CA) and worked right out of the box.. I couldn't get it to update at first, but found out you have to plug in the micro USB cable directly into the unit, NOT with the magnetic base attached. Its been working perfectly since I've had it.

Pros: *Slim design *Features *Ease of use

Cons: None

The best got better.

CyberguyJeff from West Coast of Florida on 12/6/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the highest quality GPS unit that Garmin has produced. 5" pinch to zoom display, shows icons onscreen for restaurants, gas stations etc. nearby. Free lifetime map & traffic updates. Split screen when nearing an exit. Innovative magnetic mount allows me to quickly detach unit and hold it in front of me while typing addresses. HD traffic updates twice a minute. Just a well built, solid unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just wanted to say the unit looks great, haven't used the gps in my truck yet. The updates from Garmin went smoothly. Turns out Crutchfield had a free case offer, all it took was a 5 minute live chat session and the customer service agent had a case shipped for free. Believe me you wouldn't get this type of service from many other retailers. I'll be sure to add another review of the actual product, just wanted to give props to this companies customer service team. Thanks!!

Hope it works !!

Map Reader from Eastern kentucky on 11/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Took over 3 hours to get GPS unit to be recognized by a computer. 3 Different computers and 2 different cords. When finally got it recognized and registered, it took over 3 hours for the updates to download. In my opinion, this unit should have been ready to go work as soon as it came out of the box. I hope it works as good as advertised.

Pros: Easy to mount and hook up to power.

Cons: Difficulty in getting computer to recognize the GPS unit and amount of time to download updates.

What I was looking for

MarkB from Lewistown, PA on 11/21/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first GPS was a Tom Tom Go 910. I liked it a lot, but the battery went dead and you had to set everything each time you used it. It was reconditioned from Tom Tom. They apparently don't update the maps or replace the battery when they sell it that way. I replaced it with a Go 730, also used. Many features missing compared to the 910, got tired of paying for map updates and again the battery went dead. Decided to try a new Garmin and went with the flagship model. I wanted lifetime map updates, a nice screen and didn't care about any of the live features offered in the top Tom Tom. All my expectations exceeded. I didn't know it would have voice command and that works amazingly well. Crutchfield shipped very quickly, and setup was very easy. I'm completely satisfied with both Garmin and Crutchfield.

Pros: Beautiful bright display, loud clear voice instructions in a very natural voice, solid windshield mount, easy to use, virtually no learning curve, lifetime maps. Haven't seen the traffic feature yet because I live in a rural area. Voice activation is amazing. There are lots of features that I'm still discovering. I didn't realize at first that I could change the option on arrival time.

Cons: I had the Tom Tom a long time. The Garmin sometimes gives me routes that take longer that what Tom Tom would report. Garmin is keeping me on better roads. Tom Tom seemed to route better. Both are set to the fastest option as opposed to the shortest.

Excellent GPS, but software problems

Bill P. from Pine Grove, CA on 9/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The 3597 is an excellent GPS. Large, bright screen, lots of features, easy to enter addresses, sleek-looking, accurate directions. The magnetic connection to the base feels solid, but has popped loose a couple of times when adjusting the viewing angle of the device on the Portable Friction Mount. The initial problem was with the software. When I connected the 3597 to my year-old MacBook Pro computer to register the device and download map updates, the computer would not recognize that the device was connected. After all the troubleshooting I could think of, I called Crutchfield support. The tech tried what he knew but with no success. He referred me to Garmin tech support. The technician there tried a variety of things, but he couldn't get it, either. He transferred me to a tech on "the Mac Team." This third person finally got the device and the computer to recognize each other. Registration went okay, but then it would not download map updates. The device would download one item, then "fail." Repeating the whole process got one more item, then another failure. I gave up after getting 4 items, with 194 more items to go. The next day, I decided to try one more time. The download proceeded completely smoothly, and all downloading of maps was successful. I do not know what the device did to fix itself. After these initial problems, the 3597 was worked fine. The set-up difficulties caused the 4-star rating, instead of a 5-star.

Pros: Excellent GPS, as described above.

Cons: Initial set-up problems, which took 3 tech support staff to figure out.

SueH from Milwaukee, WI on 9/15/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great GPS would get me places I could not find without the Garmin. I looked at all the GPS currently available and with research from CNET, Consumer Report and other customers. This machine was my best bet for life time maps and traffic updates. I would recommend Garmin for any price point and this one if you are interested in the best you can buy.

Pros: The screen is large and very readable while driving and the voice directions are clear.

Cons: Sun light makes glare on the screen.

Awesome GPS

JT from Crawford, NE on 9/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome GPS! It works great even better than the models before it. Very nice screen and the touch response is perfect. I have it paired with my cell phone and make calls on it through the blue tooth. Sometimes my diesel pickup is a little loud for people to hear me on the other end, but most of the time it works well.

Pros: Great screen, great navigation.

Cons: Not as many trip data displays as older model, for like ETA and such on main screen, but there are some more customizable fields like avg speed and odometer. Had to pay 10$ for eco route without buying the 100$ module to hook the gps into your vehicles computer system. Eco route is handy for logging your fuel usage.

Beyond my expectations

RobinG from NJ on 8/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced my old Garmin Nuvi with this one. I was looking for a new GPS with traffic updates, and an overall upgrade. I am more than happy with this GPS. Some fun features- I hooked my phone up through the Bluetooth and when I got a call, the display showed who it was from, without replacing the map. When there was traffic in the local lanes, the GPS intuitively sent me to the express lane. When exiting, an image of the actual exit sign appears as well as which lane to be in. The screen is clear and crisp. There are many options for your 'car' and voices. My kids like me to change it up once in a while. I also like that the iPhone app automatically can send an address to the GPS.

Pros: Crisp screen, Bluetooth, lane change, traffic updates,

Cons: Took at least 45 minutes to download all the maps when first connecting to garmin site.

I think the glass screen is not that clear. Unit is not worth the price. Voice recognition is no better than the nuvi 2595.

Pros: I liked the magnet attachment.

Cons: If you wear polarized sun glasses the screen goes black if you are not facing it straight on. Since most of my driving is in the day time I had to return this unit. Poor design should have been caught before selling this unit.

Great product! Starts fast, searches quickly and calculates routes better than any nuvi before. The added features for active lane guidance are very helpful. I did have some experience of being routed off of a new road as it was not included in the map I have installed; despite the fact it that I had the latest and greatest map downloaded from Garmin. It was a small problem, but not a big deal. I do hope Garmin adds a few features back into the 3597 like more dashboards/data options and the Audible player. These were nice, albeit minor features I used. Garmin should make these as downloadable options. Overall a great GPS even given the high price.

Pros: Fast, great display, active lane guidance helpful

Cons: Not 100% accurate map data, missing some features previously offered in older models.

Sweet interface

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this GPS! The touch face is so smooth, and the graphics and text are perfectly legible. It gives great directions by voice, with matching graphics that make sense. It is just as it is described in the sales material. I removed one star for the great difficulty I had in figuring out how to buy and load Europe maps. There are about four different Garmin software applications that do similar (but not exactly the same) functions, which is unnecessary. They need to take a whole new try at their single application that does everything, that simplifies and organizes the complex. They have that principle right with the hardware--very elegant--but they're still struggling with the supporting software.

Pros: A fantastic piece of technology that is intuitive and fun. Maps of most of the world is available.

Cons: Supporting software applications overlap and are confusing. That made installing other continents' maps too confusing. Once figured out, it works great.

Pros: More info, faster traffic updates, lifetime maps

Cons: Expensive

Review for the Garmin nüvi® 3597LMTHD

Earl P from WA on 7/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall thus far I have been pleased with the unit. I was looking for a unit that had Blue Tooth and a lot of functionality and this unit seems to fit the bill to date. After reading some of the reviews regarding the quality of the sound of Blue Tooth I was a little skeptical about it working in my diesel truck because of the background noise especially since I have poor hearing. To date I have had no problem hearing or understanding the voices coming through the Nuvi's speaker nor has the other party had a hard time understanding me while the truck is running on the highway. Certainly the voice quality is not what you would get from a factory install using the vehicles speaker system but it is acceptable. The "voice command" feature needs improving. The unit only recognizers a few basic commands and it has difficulty understanding the name of places, addresses, states, etc.. Both my wife and I have tried this feature and at times have been frustrated.

Pros: I was pleasantly surprised to find that the unit will identify major National Forest roads by number and provide navigational information. I have not as yet tried the road system of other government agencies but will be doing so in the near future.

Cons: 1) The manual leaves a lot to be desired and does not provide specific information on a number of topics (e.g., upper capacity of mini sd card, etc. However, the tech support of both Crutchfield and Garmin have been great. 2) You can not edit individual "locations" in the "Where To-Recent" menu. You are forced to eliminate all of the entries or non at all. I am sure that there are other such limitations but I have not had an opportunity to test all of the functions as of this date.

Standalone is so much better

Billy H from Charlotte, NC on 7/10/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this unit after becoming frustrated with the Garmin navigation built into my Kenwood head unit. I figured that the head unit nav would be pretty state of the art considering that I bought the top of the line at the time. This standalone unit is so much faster, brighter, and crisper and has voice commands built in. There is little boot time compared to the head unit. The active lane indication is a nice feature and gives you a pretty clear indication of which lane to be in well ahead of time. The magnetic mount makes it easy to remove (and hide) the unit and has a great speaker built into it. If you didn't already have bluetooth in your car this would be a nice option for phone calls as well.

Pros: Display is great...think iPhone retina quality Active lane guidance is nice Way faster than any head unit nav I tried Voice commands can be handy The mount provides a loud speaker and easy detach point

Cons: The voice commands are a little works better if you speak pretty loudly and slowly. It didn't seem very good at recognizing names. Some of the POI and street information isn't quite up to date Not exactly a con, but the traffic information is transmitted over 5 wire mini USB. I powered the unit with an extension cable to a standard USB port on my dash. This works, however you won't get traffic info unless you use a 5 wire cable/adaptor at the end of the included charger.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exceeds all expectations!!!!! This is by far the best GPS I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I had no idea that GPS systems had advanced this far. I am constantly amazed by the accuracy and attention to detail.

Pros: Easy, highly accurate, fast, real time traffic updates are great.

Cons: Thought I bought a lemon when I first turned it on, but after uploading new maps and operating system, I couldn't be happier.

Great upscale GPS

Bill R from Carmel, IN on 7/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had a Garmin from just about every generation since the black and white versions with routing created on a PC and downloaded to the GPS. This 3957 is by far the best! The 5" screen is bright and easy to read. Route calculation is quick and so far the routes are accurate. The unit is a bit difficult to hold in your hands if you are walking, but when driving it works quite well.

Pros: Large display; quick and accurate routing; magnetic connector is strong and convenient

Cons: A bit large and slippery to hold in your hands

This unit seems to be accurate. I had a problem seeing the 3D display with polarized sun glasses. During a 1000 mile trip , the unit blacked out twice and had to be reset.

Pros: Accurate Loads of information Easy to use Connects with Bluetooth easily.

Cons: Screen blacks out. 3D is hard to see with polarized sunglasses

RobC from St Louis on 6/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 3rd generation Garmin product, which says something in and of itself. The magnetic mount takes a bit of getting used to, but I like it. Graphics are very clear and sharp which is good for older eyes. I have noticed that the case gets very warm to the touch. While this may be somewhat summer windshield induced, it's warmer that my previous unit. It also seems to have issues with the Blue tooth connection to my iPhone 5. audio on both ends of a conversation are very broken. Will be looking into that. Bottom line: Best Unit I've had from Garmin.

Pros: Connection, screen/graphics, recalculation speed

Cons: unit temperature, Bluetooth connection

Great GPS

Shift from Charlottesville, VA on 6/19/2013

I haven't had a lot of road time with this GPS yet, but so far it is fantastic. The speaker built into the base is loud and clear. The display is vibrant, bright, crystal clear and the 3D graphics look great. As expected for a product of this price, build quality is excellent, probably the best I've seen over any other GPS.

Pros: Good UI, Build quality, 3D graphics, clear sound, free traffic monitoring for life

Cons: Price, PC software could use some improvements

ROBERT D. from FAIRFIELD, OHIO on 6/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great directions, versatility, and graphics. The only negative was that it directed us to a couple of restaurants, one which was no longer in business, the other that was not at the location provided. I am wondering if the POI's are updated on a regular basis like the maps. Design is sleek, touch screen very responsive, and guidance explicit. It even informs you which lanes are appropriate for an upcoming turn or exit. Be aware that the traffic functionality works only in certain areas. Many times on the highway, the signal is too weak to provide data. The unit does not scream at you the traditional "recalculating " if you make a wrong turn. It gently tries to steer you in the right direction. So, if you seem to be going in circles, it is probably because you have ventured off-course. The unit is a bit pricey, but like anything else, you usually get what you pay for. Crutchfield did its usual credible job of providing the product via standard shipping in 3 days. Overall, this is a superb unit which will not disappoint.

Pros: Guidance 3.0, graphics, versatility.

Cons: POI'S not entirely accurate. (Otherwise, would warrant a five star rating)

Great product!

Kathy from New Rochelle, NY on 6/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 3rd garmin and the best one yet. I love the magnet attachment. I don't like to leave my gps out when I'm not in the car. The magnet makes it super easy to attach and remove. Wish the unit came with a case like my last one but I have one on order. So far the best feature is knowing which lane to be in at intersections. With so many fast moving multi lane highways, its important to know this in advance. I haven't had a chance to try out the voice activation feature yet. I have had no issues with bad directions. In fact, since using my new garmin, I haven't gotten lost in Boston. Not the case with my last garmin. This one works in the tunnels.

Pros: Light weight, clear screen, easy to use, voice activation.

Not Convinced, but Hopeful

RosieB from Hilton Head Island, SC on 6/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using Garmin products for over 10 years. I ordered the latest and greatest because I trust this product. My previous, which I loved was a 3790T. I used my new 3597 to locate an office on Hilton Head and was disappointed when the device sent me to the wrong location. Perhaps the mapping was not so good for this little island. I then used it to find a location on E. Broughton street in Savannah, GA and was surprised to find the map did not have East Broughton or E. Broughton street even though it is one of Savannah's main streets. I will be traveling for a few weeks this summer and I am hopeful the new Garmin will out perform my old Garmin. I will let you know.

Pros: Speed of generating directions. Not as many "recalculating" messages. Quality of the screen.

Cons: Not sure I like the is really strong. It seems to attract everything when it is removed and put in my purse or in the center console. I have a 93 year old mother-in-law with a she safe??

No need for factory-installed Nav System, period!

Yanimoe from NE Philadelphia, PA on 6/1/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This baby really beats any factory-installed Navigation System on any car manufactures out there, and I'm a living proof. From the BMW's, the Infiniti's, the Honda's, the Toyota's, and the VW's, none of their Navigation System gave me the outcome that the Garmin nuvi 3597LMTHD had giving me, so far. From the setup to the search mode, and from the guidance to the whole process in getting you to the exact location you wish for, this Garmin does it better than the competition. Easy and friendly to use, and with such magical results, why settle for anything less. The price is right for what you get from this baby. You even get free and accurate current traffic information every 30 seconds, plus lifetime maps update, as long as you own this Garmin. Consider there is no need to pay for updating maps, specially when the BMW's charges you about $99 and the Infiniti's charges about $197 (after 25% discount) when updating their maps (probably every year or two) which is absolutely crazy, your Garmin will be practically free after a year or so if you own any given factory-installed Navigation System. Also, if you ever sell your car, at least you get to keep your Garmin and not losing what you've already paid for having factory-installed Navigation Systems. Trust me, I've traded-in 4 different cars with factory-installed Navigation Systems and got nothing in return for having them. I just got a 2013 Honda Civic Si, but without a Navigation System, which cost me about $1300 less!

Pros: Easy to setup, search, and to pre-loading your desired locations. Easy to set it up to your own style. Can be setup at home, before you even get to your car. Easy to carry and to place in your car for the perfect viewing without affect visibility while driving. Stays up-to-date with maps by just having it link to any computer while running "Kies" software.

Cons: Could be nice to have a longer charge time while in battery-operated mode, which is currently set to about an hour or so, but if you keep it pluged-in to a computer or to home outlet then it's not an issue.

The Retina GPS - Superb, Lightweight, Just Great

Michael from Fairfax, Va. on 5/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this new hardware design. It has a MUCH better on/off switch. It's actually a button on the back that is so much easier to use than the old small button at the top of the unit. That had always been a frustration. Not this one. So much easier to find and use. The windshield mount is magnetic. What a great idea. The unit just gets pulled into the right position and you are good to go. The user interface is also much cleaner and simpler. The new voice prompts sound like a good (lady) friend giving you directions. "Turn right at the traffic light." "Turn left at the end of the street." The voice itself is much nicer sounding and the street pronunciations are much, much better. Garmin calls this "Real Directions, with Real Voice." The screen itself is less cluttered and less colorful which makes for an easier experience. The speed limit sign is now towards the bottom left corner. And the actual speed you are driving is close by. If you go over the limit the box gets a red border. At night it is a bit more difficult to see when it turns red. One new addition is the name of the road you are on at the bottom center of the screen. You can now stop the route from the main screen. Upcoming gas, food or other options is a great option. All in all, this is really a great step up. I highly recommend it. I wasn't sure it would have been a major upgrade from the 3590, but I am pleasantly surprised that it is and more. You will enjoy using this new flagship

I have only had the chance to use this Garmin twice so far so I am just getting used to its functions. It is my third Garmin with the other two going to my children. The screen is unbelievable and it is much easier to see no matter what the light situation.

Pros: Great screen, loud voice, voice activation

Cons: Blue tooth is not as loud as I would like. I am still trying to determine how to raise the volume for my cell phone.

Les from Cincinnati, Oh on 5/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace a 3-year-old Garmin unit that was top of the line at the time. I really like that they have gone to lifetime traffic and maps. I have had it for 2 weeks and am very happy with the unit. The response is much faster, the touch screen is much better, and the slightly larger display is very clear. The voice command work well if it is very quiet in the car, otherwise it gets confused. The HD traffic is much faster than the previous traffic. Overall I am very pleased with the unit. The new magnetic mount is fantastic, as well as the larger speaker in the base.

Pros: Fast boot-up, great display, touch screen is better. The route change is so fast, AND it never says "RE-CALCULATING" when you change routes on it!

Cons: Blu-tooth link is great for my iPhone and easy to sent addresses to it, the only problem is that I cannot connect to my Ford Sync and the Garmin at the same time, but that is not a Garmin issue.

What a portable navigator should be

Written by Matt Freeman, Staff Writer - Creative, on 10/10/2013 3:40:00 PM
I have to admit, there are times when I wonder if portable navigators are soon going to be phased out by smartphone apps. But then I use something like the nüvi 3597LMTHD, and I remember that the answer is "most definitely not." I got to do an in-depth test of this particular portable, and came away really impressed. I could go on at length about all the things I liked about it: the friendly user interface, the accurate and quick traffic-info service, and even the cool magnetic mount. But what impressed me most was the display. Garmin's not kidding when they say that this display is "high-def". I found it very easy to read, no matter what kind of light it was in, and could pick out little map details pretty much instantly. On top of that, the smooth glass of the display coupled with neat touches like pinch-and-zoom capability made this thing super-easy to use. So as long as companies like Garmin keep coming out with models this easy and fun to use, the portable navigator is here to stay.
