If you're exploring and want a trusty travel companion, feast your eyes on the Garmin nüvi 66LMT portable navigator, part of their Essential Series. Not only does it boast a panoramic 6" display that works in horizontal and vertical orientations, it also features maps of all 50 states, plus Canada and several major Caribbean Islands. You'll also have millions of preloaded points of interest at your disposal for when it's time to get off the road.

Garmin's first 6" portable navigator

This is Garmin's first navigator with a 6" display, and the larger screen size ensures you'll see every detail clearly from the driver's seat. And you can manually adjust the screen orientation by 90 degrees, if you prefer a lengthwise view that's more in line with your smartphone display. The nüvi's slim profile ensures it won't take up too much real estate, and the advanced rear mount will keep it firmly in place on your windshield. Best of all, you can keep the nüvi 66LMT's maps current with free lifetime map updates for as long as you own the navigator, so you don't have to worry about road changes or moved businesses in the future.

Guidance you can use

This Garmin announces actual street names at turns, so you'll hear "turn left on Fountain Court" instead of "take the next left." Colored arrows pop up as you approach complicated interchanges and junctions, showing you the the proper lane for the next maneuver. To keep you oriented, you'll always have a text reminder of which street you're on.

Garmin's improved search function finds the correct destination through addresses and points of interest quickly and accurately. Speed limit displays with visual warnings on major roads help keep you in check, and you'll even be notified of school zones with audible and visual cues. And with one tap of the screen, Garmin's Up Ahead display will pull up details for services that lie ahead, including restaurants, gas stations, and more — all without leaving the map screen.

You'll always be aware of upcoming services with the Up Ahead display, located on the right of the screen.

Garmin Traffic

The nüvi 66LMT features free lifetime traffic updates using Garmin's Traffic service, which delivers up-to-date reports quickly. Garmin Traffic incorporates data from active devices on the road, historical traffic patterns, and other factors like construction, concerts, and sporting events to give you a comprehensive look at congestion in most metropolitan areas, including a few cities in Canada. Best of all, you won't have to pay a penny more for this service over the life of your nüvi.

You can see what traffic problems lie ahead and find the best route around them.

Handy Garmin extras

This Garmin's compatible with the optional Garmin BC 30 wireless rear-view camera, so you can add an extra layer of safety when you're backing out of your driveway. The "Where Am I?" emergency locator provides your exact location instantly, displaying nearby emergency services if you need aid. Garmin's trip computer lets you plan trips and record mileage, maximum speed, total time, and more. The Garmin Express software suite found at Garmin's website allows you to update maps and software, transfer favorites to and from devices, and customize your vehicle icon and spoken voices. The nüvi 66LMT also lets you assign custom points of interest so you can find favorite stops that are a little off the beaten path.

Nice, large display

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice, large 6" screen, which has matte finish (no glare!). Quick response, both with touch screen and with navigation. Very easy to use.

Pros: Large, readable display

Cons: Since screen has matte finish (which is good for no glare), it has slower touch response than glossy screen.

New to GPS

BybeeGrandpa from Bybee, VA on 9/12/2014

Never had or used a GPS before this purchase. Found some odd errors in the directions and listings for restaurants that no longer exist around here. Makes me wonder about traveling to strange places! Called Garmin support once and they weren't able to help me so ..... Planning a trip out west so will test it thoroughly then.

Pros: easy to read maps clear voice nice screen size

Cons: errors in map (turning from Bybee Road onto Rt 250 doesn't show a road change for instance) can't find a way to recharge the battery without hauling a laptop along on the trip or leaving it charging in the car

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit because of it's large 6 inch display. Biggest mistake, ever. I usually never write reviews on any products I've purchased, but this time, I had to make an exception. First, the GPS has a rather cheap plastic that gets scratch rather easy. Ok, fine... since this won't impact the way the GPS performs I'll let it slide. However, things only got worse. I set a destination I wanted to go, and BEFORE i even got to my destination, the GPS said I've arrived at my destination and stopped navigating when I was still 0.5 miles away! I had to pull over to a gas station so i can re-enter the address, and THEN it finally took me there. Now, let's talk about the way this GPS navigates... This GPS doesn't use the same route as you previously came from point A to B. When I was going to point B it was navigating me on mostly highways. However, when going home it didn't use the same route that I've previously came from; instead, it was on some freeways and the rest were local where there was huge amount of traffic. And finally, I bought this product mainly for my mother who constantly forgets to shut down the GPS every time she turns the car off. In the older nuvi models, the GPS would always turn itself when external power is lost. This feature is gone. The screen clearly states "Turning off in 15 seconds" when external power is lost.. it doesn't turn off, but rather it goes into safe mode which still discharges the battery. Never again!

Pros: large 6 inch display

Cons: inaccurate navigation, inaccurate traffic, no auto shut down.

Nice unit would recomend to anyone.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well lets start by saying I liked the size of the unit a little easier to see than my 5 inch one. I had this for only a couple of weeks at home when one day it would not start up. I called the Crutchfield service department and they helped me with the problem right away and got it running again. If I had bought at anywhere else it probably would have been sent back to garmin. Great customer service is worth the price. The only issue I had with it was the maps were not always right due to new construction in a couple of places we went. This would be a problem with garmin as I had updated the maps before I left on our trip to Florida.

Pros: Right size,,Good traffic info..Loud enough to hear....starts right back on your navigation when you stop for a break...easy to see screen in daylight...Bought from Crutchfield.....Does not have a lot of extra unneeded features that I would not use...Good routing and adaptable if you change route...

Cons: Speed limit was wrong in many many places....Map data was wrong in several places-a garmin issue.....

Good unit but could be better!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit replaced a TomTom XXL540. I appreciate the Garmin's larger display and the significantly improved display quality. Map updating was much faster than I expected based upon reviews I had read on prior generation Garmins. I found the window mount holds the GPS much more securely than the mount for the XXL540. The screen interface for setting/saving destinations; changing options, etc, takes some getting used to. It could be more intuitive. I had trouble remembering which screen to go to for specific settings. Also, it is difficult finding the screen that displays GPS status (how many satellite are in view, S/N ratio or accuracy). Setting up a destination was straight forward. The only problem I had was key size was too small for my fingers. Once you enter an address, street and number, you are presented with a series of locations based upon the area selected and changing the selected area was easy. Alternatives routes are provided and it is easy to select the desired one. I read reviews on prior models suggesting routes selected were not the most direct or fastest. So far, I have not had this problem. I found voice instructions adequate but not as good as on the XXL. For example, the Garmin will tell me to make a right turn an intersection while the TomTom would also tell me this intersection is the second right turn. I was disappointed that I was not able simultaneously to display time of day, arrival time, distance to destination, travel direction, etc.

Pros: Excellent 6 inch display with plenty of brightness Good route planning with alternatives Accurate intersection graphics in split screen while navigating Easy window mounting and adjustment using included suction mounting system

Cons: Touch screen difficult to use without error if you have large fingers Navigation instructions not as clear or informative (particularly compared to TomTom) Despite large display, the information that that can be displayed at one time is limited Could use a compass in navigation mode so you know your direction of travel on map when heading is in the upward direction

Wonderful unit and worth the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Garmin has come a long way--my original GPS, currently about 5 years old, served me well but was slow and outdated. I purchased 2 other Garmins (which I returned) prior to this one. Garmin now has a lot of information on the screen, and you need a large screen to be able to glean the information at a glance and get back to the business of driving. Anything smaller than a 6" screen is going to be problematic (in my opinion). There were 2 drawbacks, one easily solved and the other is a work in progress. First, the unit comes with a built in female American voice--it's fine but just doesn't carry over a radio or conversation, it would be easy to just tune out. Problem is solved easily by downloading voice software that gives you an array of male and female English speaking voices with various accents (American, British, Australian). The second problem is a work in progess: the unit is sold touting school zone with verbal and screen reminders--no matter how many schools I go by, I've yet to get a warning. There is a blip on the screen for one school that I pass, but it's a blip and it pops up after I've passed the schoolzone. Both Crutchfield and Garmin advised map updates; that did not solve the issue, but after reading more on the Garmin website I think this is a feature that is really still a work in progress. Buyer, be aware, but don't let that sway you from not getting this great unit.

Pros: Easy to read, lots of information at a glance. Easy to read if you wear progressive lenses and sunglasses also. Boots up quickly, re-routes in seconds without the annoying "Recalculating" reminders. Almost as good as having someone in the car with you to be your navigator.

Cons: Problematic school zone software, but don't let that dissuade you.

Navigation Features

Garmin Traffic: Garmin Traffic helps you avoid traffic tie-ups that may delay your travel. It uses NAVTEQ Traffic-RDS, which collects, processes, and distributes real-time traffic conditions, and refreshes the traffic data every 5 minutes. Updates appear to the side of the map, so your driving map remains onscreen at all times. The updates can give you details about the situation, including the estimated length of the delay. Free Lifetime Garmin Traffic requires no subscription or activation, and is subject to Terms & Conditions.

Note: Traffic updates are available in approximately 136 markets throughout the U.S. and Canada. Location-relevant pop-up ads and coupons will be received when traffic is enabled on the unit.

Optional Garmin HD Digital Traffic: When you add the optional Garmin GTM60 HD Digital Traffic receiver, you will receive updates as often as every 30 seconds over the HD Radio system, more than 10 times more often than other analog traffic receivers. Garmin HD Digital Traffic is available in approximately 125 metropolitan markets throughout the U.S.

Points of Interest: The built-in maps include over 8-million Points of Interest (POIs) such as hotels, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and ATMs. In addition, you can download additional points of interest and add them to the unit's memory (Custom POIs). The free POI Loader software can be downloaded from the Garmin website to assist you in creating Custom POIs.

Map View Options: You can choose from a 3D map view or two 2D map views (Track Up or North Up) as you navigate to your destination.

Speed Limits: As you travel along a major road or street, the speed limit is displayed on the screen alongside of the vehicle's speed display. If you are exceeding the speed limit, the color of the vehicle speed indication changes to red. If the highway's posted speed limit has changed since the last map update, you can change the speed limit display on the unit.

Where Am I?: The "Where Am I?" feature gives you instant access to important information in case of an emergency. When you touch the vehicle icon on the map screen, the "Where Am I?" feature provides the coordinates (including elevation) of your current position, plus the nearest address and intersections. There are also buttons to help you locate the nearest hospitals, police stations, gas stations, and roadside assistance. You can also save the location for future reference.

Up Ahead: As you travel along your route, the Up Ahead feature constantly indicates the location of nearby businesses, including gas, food, lodging, restrooms, parking, and banks and ATMs. The locations are shown as icons, some with brand logos, and when the icons are touched on the screen, details of the services are displayed, and you are given the opportunity to navigate to that address.

Garmin Locate: To assist you in finding your parked vehicle, the Garmin Locate feature saves your location to memory when you remove the device from the windshield mounting cradle while the device is on. You can search for your vehicle's location using the Last Spot button in the menu.

Destination Search: When the Where To? button is pressed, you can use the search tools to find your destination and plan your route. The search tools allow you to search for cities, addresses, intersections, or coordinates. The new Search Bar lets you directly enter a category, brand name, address, or city name. The unit's memory stores the last 50 locations you have found so you can quickly find a previous destination.

Garmin Garage: The unit offers your choice of eight standard icons to represent your vehicle. The online Garmin Garage offers dozens more vehicle icons that you can download for free. In addition, you can purchase icon and voice bundles with Star Wars (Yoda, Darth Vader), Sesame Street (Oscar, Cookie Monster, Ernie & Bert), and The Simpsons (Homer and Marge) themes, among others.

Trip Planner: You can create and save a trip with multiple destinations using the Trip Planner. Once you have entered your destinations, you can manually set them in the order of your preference, or allow the device to calculate the most efficient route. Trip itineraries can be saved in memory for future use.

Trip Computer: The trip information page displays your current speed and direction, and provides helpful statistics about your trip. Dual trip odometers keep up with your total mileage. The page also indicates the distance and driving time to your next maneuver, as well as the distance and driving time to your destination. Your maximum speed and moving average speed are also displayed. The information can be reset in advance of your next trip.

Where I've Been/Trip Log: The Where I've Been application allows you to view your previous routes and places you have stopped on the map. In addition, the device keeps a Trip Log, which is a record of the path you have traveled. The Travel History setting must be enabled in order for the Where I've Been and Trip Log features to function.

myTrends: The myTrends feature takes into account your personal driving habits and anticipates your route when calculating your ETA to your frequent destinations. This feature does not work out of the box at first, but is most effective after 2-3 weeks of regular usage.

GPS Simulator: When indoors, you can activate the built-in GPS simulator and practice using the unit. This turns off the GPS receiver so it's not searching for satellites, saving battery power.

ecoRoute: The optional ecoRoute feature calculates the fuel economy and the fuel price of navigating to a destination, and offers tools for improving fuel efficiency. The ecoRoute application can be purchased from the Garmin Online Store.
