There are plenty of activity trackers on the market, but it may be a safe bet to say that Garmin's vivofit® 3 is one of the smartest out there. If you've used an activity tracker like I have, you know it's fun to keep track of your steps — at least initially. But if you do a lot of different types of exercise, it can be a chore to enter those manually into your workout log. vivofit 3 solves that problem with a cool piece of tech Garmin calls Move IQ.
Move IQ detects different types of activities and records them automatically. Walking, running, swimming, biking, using an elliptical — they're all recorded as distinct activities, and automatically uploaded to Garmin Connect. When you've finished your day, a couple swipes of your phone's touchscreen and you'll have an accurate record of all you're doing to improve your health.
Garmin Connect does more than just log your data. You can use it to join challenges or start competitions with your friends for bragging rights. Compete for virtual badges or just for bragging rights — it's a great motivator.
Once you're moving and establishing a routine, use vivofit 3 to expand your horizons. The activity timer lets you record the duration of a walk, run, bike ride, or other activity, and then automatically upload the activity to Garmin Connect, so you can keep a handy record of the positive changes you're making in your lifestyle. And you can use an optional heart rate monitor with vivofit 3 to record your heart rate during exercise, so you can establish heart rate zones for training and get more accurate calorie consumption figures.
Even if you're deskbound during the day, vivofit 3 is ready to help. The move bar provides a visual reminder to get up from your seat and take a walk — a simple strategy that pays big health dividends. Sit too long and a red bar appears, and it even provides an audible reminder if you want. Or set it to provide a vibration alert through your compatible mobile device if that's a better cue. And vivofit 3 doesn't take time off — it will track the quality of your rest while you're sleeping, too.
The stylish yet comfortable vivofit 3 blends effortlessly fit into your routine. It's water rated to 50 meters, so ducking into the shower or taking a swim won't phase it at all. And it will run for a year or more before you have to change its two coin cell batteries.
Average Customer Review(s):
Great tracker. For me it's working fine, I'm on my way to a more fit lfe
Pros: Helping lead a more active life
Really like the vivofit 3. Only complaint I have is that the Garmin Connect App doesn't always work properly. I have had to remove and reinstall my device 3-4 times to get it to sync with the App. It's not a problem with the vivofit but instead with the Garmin App.
Pros: I Like the lighted dial function. Does what I need.
Cons: Will not always sync with the Garmin Connect App for android. I would give it 5 stars if not for this pesky problem.
Somewhat disappointed. The step count is inaccurate. Counts driving as steps, many steps counted while in the shower, plus counts more steps than I actually take when I count steps and compare with the device. That said, it appears to be consistent in tracking my activities, which was my basic intent. Also wish the display was a little brighter for night viewing.
Pros: Compact & light weight. Numerous exercise options. Waterproof.
Cons: Inaccurate step counts
It was a little had to set to my phone
I use this as a step counter and it works well. Like that it has a watch feature and doesn't need to be charged like my Fitbit that this replaced. Would have given 5 stars if the clasp hadn't broke in less than a week. Garmin is sending a replacement strap.
I should start by saying that I just returned this Vivofit 3 to Crutchfield, my first Crutchfield purchase return in over twenty years. I bought the Vivofit 3 primarily because it has an internal battery (life a year or so) that does not require the frequent recharging of other Garmin devices, Fitbits or an Apple Watch, and because Garmin suggested that the Garmin "Move IQ" would detect activities like swimming, weights, etc.. I sent the Vivofit back after a few days for the following reasons: The Vivofit does NOT detect swimming, or any other activity as best I can tell. It has a ridiculous band which is too long, and the 'tail' of it dangles out from under the band-you could cut it. The Garmin Connect software does not merge manually entered activity like treadmill walking steps with auto detect activities like steps (Fitbit does merge manual and auto detect activity into one panel). Finally, the internal, no charge battery does have a penalty-the device is fatter than most fitness bands-this bothered me but it might not bother you. So, for me a bust on the functionality, software, and hardware-about a complete failure. If you want a decent wrist mounted pedometer with a battery which does not need recharging, this is for you. I sadly went back to my Fitbit Charge, (and recharge, and recharge.....Fitbit batteries are not very good, but everything else better than Garmin for me).
Pros: Battery lasts a year with no recharging Syncs easily with Garmin Connect app and software Display on Vivofit 3 changed to vertical when used as a watch Soft silicone-like material band is comfortable (but length, clasp and fatness require rethinking)
Cons: "Move IQ" does not detect activities Device will not detect treadmill walking (unless you swing arm throughout), but if you try to manually enter time and distance, steps will not add to device or weekly totals steps-software will not merge activities. Band is pretty long and end comes loose-clasp and band needs work Garmin Connect software is not intuitive Device only detected walking/steps, nothing else. Internal battery is a great idea, but makes band fatter than most wrist fi

The slender, lightweight device is worn on the wrist, and displays your steps, calories burned, and distances traveled, and alerts you when you've reached your daily goal. Garmin Connect Mobile works with Bluetooth 4.0-enabled devices running Android 4.3 or higher and iOS 8.0 and above.
Wrist Band: This vívofit 3 comes with an extra large-sized wrist band (for wrist circumferences between 6.5" and 8.9"). Additional segments of the Move Bar appear after every 15 minutes of inactivity. Walking a short distance will reset the Move Bar.
