Load five CDs, a blank MD, and you're off! In one smart component, the MXD-D5C brings loads of digital music fun and functionality to your home audio system — multi-CD playback, MD recording, editing and playback, plus internal high-speed (4X) dubbing from CD to MiniDisc. Dual front-panel jog dials (one each for CD and MD) and a direct-access remote keep you in control, while a large two-line display keeps you informed.

Enter disc/track titles for your MDs; you can even plug in your PC's (PS/2-compatible) keyboard for easier, faster title entry. (The titles transfer automatically when you dub CD Text discs.) When you're mixing songs from a batch of CDs, use digital record level control to match volumes from song to song; or use Sony's cool Scale Factor Edit feature to adjust MD track volumes after they're recorded. High-quality analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters provide accurate MiniDisc recording and playback — you'll love the sound!

System Features

Overview: Combines a 5-CD elevator-style changer with a single MiniDisc recorder/player in a single chassis. Features a two line, blue display which can be set to display one line for CD and one for MiniDisc, or both lines can be set to display either CD or MiniDisc information. There are two jog dials (one for MiniDisc and one for CD) that are used for quick track access and quick MiniDisc menu access.

Keyboard input: There is a PS/2 keyboard input on the rear panel for use with an optional PS/2 computer keyboard.  Besides being used to title MiniDiscs with alpha-numeric keys, the keyboard can also be used to play an MD or CD. The keyboard is not supplied.

CD Features

CD Compatibility: This unit will play prerecorded CDs and finalized CD-Rs, but it will not play CD-RW discs.

Playback modes:

  • Normal: Plays all discs
  • Shuffle Play: Plays all tracks on selected CD or all loaded CDs in random order
  • Program Play: Allows you to program a sequence of up to 25 songs for playback in any order
  • Repeat play: A single disc, all discs, single track, shuffle play, or program play can be repeated
  • Note: You must select the CD changer during playback. You cannot, for example, random play or program play between the MiniDisc and CD decks.

CD Text: Displays track and disc titles for CDs which have this information. Note that when a CD Text disc is copied to MiniDisc using the CD Synchro recording function, the track and disc titles are automatically recorded onto the MiniDisc.

MiniDisc Features

Playback modes:

  • Normal: Plays all tracks
  • Shuffle Play: Plays all tracks on MD in random order
  • Program Play: Allows you to program a sequence of up to 25 songs for playback in any order
  • Repeat play: A single track, all tracks, shuffle play, or program play can be repeated
  • Note: You must select the MD player/recorder during playback. You cannot, for example, random play or program play between the MiniDisc and CD decks.

CD Synchro-Recording: You can easily copy a CD digitally to a MiniDisc using the CD Synchro function. Note that you cannot use CD Synchro to record over existing material since recording starts automatically from the end of existing material, and that you can not manually set the recording level in Synchro Mode. You can select regular CD Synchro, which copies a CD in real time, REC-IT which records only the track you are currently listening to, or High Speed synchro which records a CD to MiniDisc at 4X the standard speed. If a CD is not in good condition (for example, scratches, dirty, warped, etc.) and a reading failure occurs the unit will try to record the track once again in the high speed mode. If the second try fails, it will revert to copying the CD at normal speed for the remainder of the CD.

Shock protection: A shock resistant buffer holds up to six seconds of music for shock protection and time shift.

Recording Level: Recording level can be set for both digital and analog recording. Additionally, you can change the volume of the recorded tracks using S.F. (Scale Factor) Edit, which records the original track over at a new recording level.

Pitch control: You can lower the MD pitch by up to 36 steps, or 3 octaves. Additionally, you can control the playback speed in 0.1% increments from -87.5% to 0.0%.

Smart Space:  Smart space will replace long silent spaces (under 30 seconds) with a 3 second blank which may be turned on/off.

Track numbers: The track numbers may be set manually or automatically. When recording from an analog source auto track marking is based on the signal dropping to a specified level for 1.5 seconds or longer.

Sleep function: You can select 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes.

Time machine recording: The last 6 seconds of data is stored in a buffer so you can start recording 6 seconds before you actually engage record function.

Undo: Will cancel the last edit and restores the MD to the way it was prior to edit.

Music synch: Will allow you to synchro-record with any audio equipment connected to the external inputs.

Analog output:  The output can be turned up or down for better matching to your amplifier, etc. from the remote.

Recording: Recording can be done in both stereo or mono. In mono mode recording time is doubled.

Long Play Recording: In addition to normal stereo recording, this unit has two long time recording modes; LP2 and LP4. When recording in LP2 Stereo mode, you can record two times the normal recording time. When recording in LP4 Stereo mode, you can record four times the normal recording time.

Automatic conversion of digital sampling rates: This allows you to convert 32 and 48kHz to the 44.1 kHz sampling rate of MD, so you can record from DBS with digital out or DAT/DCC.

Updating: After recording, editing, or changing the table of contents the MD is only updated when power is turned off on the front panel or the disc is ejected. An interruption of power through the AC cord will cause everything that was changed since the last updating occurred to be lost.

Serial Copy Management System: SCMS does not allow you to make a copy of a digital copy.  Normally, this will not be a problem, but note that it will keep you from making a MiniDisc copy of a CD-R made on a consumer audio CD-R recorder when using the unit's CD player.
