Sony WH-1000XM2 - Adaptive noise cancellation adjusts to your surroundings, movement, and even your altitude
Crutchfield: Sony WH-X1000XM2 wireless noise-canceling headphones
Sony WH-1000XM2 - A touch panel on the right earcup lets you swipe to the next song, play or pause music, and more
The Sony WH-1000XM2 wireless noise-canceling headphones fold up neatly for travel.
Back in 2016, Sony made many "best-of" lists with their MDR-1000X wireless noise-canceling heaphones. With their revamped WH-1000XM2 headphones, Sony kept everything that made the originals a favorite among our customers. That includes the great sound, sharp looks, and snug, comfortable fit. But they've improved the already stellar noise cancellation and added even more convenience features.
Sony has used adaptive noise cancellation for a while now, and I've always found the circuitry very effective. It takes your surroundings into account, then adjusts the level of noise cancellation. But their "next-gen" circuitry goes one step further.
The WH-1000XM2 includes special on-ear sensors that can detect whether you are moving or standing still — and even if you're wearing glasses or not. Another sensor monitors barometric pressure. So now Sony can serve up noise cancellation that's optimized to the height of your in-flight plane.
Plus, you can download Sony's Headphones Connect mobile app for direct control over what noises you let in or keep out.
You can even choose to let in important ambient noise or voices. Temporarily turn off the noise-canceling technology by simply placing your hand over the right earcup. Tiny mics will pick up external sounds and voices.
When it's time to place a drink order, just put your hand over the right earcup.
These headphones are designed to deliver maximum detail from your music. The 40mm drivers have a strong-yet-light aluminum-coated diaphragm. It can respond rapidly and retain its shape, for accurate sound with a clear, detailed midrange. Specially designed vents in the earcups allow air to pass through, accentuating the bass.
And with the Headphones Connect app, you can dial-in the sound signature to meet your preference.
Music plays wirelessly from your Bluetooth-equipped phone or portable player. Sony's included an advanced form of audio coding called "aptX-HD®," for improved sound quality with devices that support this technology.
And for the best in wireless sound, you can use these headphones together with a Sony High-res Walkman. This pairing takes advantage of Sony's LDAC technology, which allows the wireless signal to retain all the musical detail that gives a song personality.
When fully charged, you can expect up to 30 hours of wireless listening with noise-cancellation turned on. You can toggle this feature on and off using the snappy touch-sensitive panel on the right earcup. It's also great for controlling music, volume, and calls with a simple tap or swipe of your finger.

awesome sounding headphones and great active nose cancelling features along with amazing battery life.
Sound awesome! I was impressed by the amount of outside noise actually got cancelled out
Cons: Size. Always looking for the biggest bang in the smallest package in headphones. I travel a lot, so the smaller the better. These are on par with others, so comparatively speaking, cant complain.
I'm a bass lover! I brought the Skull Candy Crusher, Bose 35 II and 1000XM2, been going back and forth listening to all kinds of music. I wanted to like the Skull and Bose...but they just don't compare to the Sony M2! I didn't like sound of the bass on the Skulls , Bose are week in the bass area. Sony M2 are just right for me! I'm keeping the Sony!
Pros: Great highs, meds and bass but not to much bass just right IMO. I'm a bass lover! Comfortable
Cons: I hope they don't crack like some of the reviews.
Who would have thunk !!! That blootooth would sound so good !! Overall these headphones are terrific, love the app and flexibility and tweak ability with the app, low profile case and overall form factor, good to excellent sound. The NC seems pretty good but I need to get onto a plane before I can really tell but in the office it's very good. Quality is also good and feel solid but I'm not going to bend and throw them around to test but you get my drift ! They are comfortable and sound very good, you can mess with the eq on the app to get it where you like. Overall I see why every review online has given this headphone top marks. I didn't give it 5 stars because for me something needs to blow my mind be over the top amazing, be more then I could have asked for, and these thou excellent are not in that league of products. Very few things are !!
Pros: Light, feel good on, quality, sound flexibility with app, the app, over sound and noise cancellation is very good
Cons: Out of the box sound is a tad Bass basis for me, wish the over pall sound was a bit more open
I think the sound quality was good, but I couldn't tell; all I could focus on was the pain of wearing headphones that are too large. Even on the smallest setting, they pinch the top of my ears and the pressure points around my jaw. Also, every time I made any attempt to adjust them, the annoying touch controls on the side would beep. I wouldn't have to keep trying to adjust them if they actually fit, so I suppose that goes back to them being too big. Judging by the reviews, I thought I would love these headphones, so for that to be ruined just by the size is really disappointing. If anyone out there is thinking to buy these, don't bother if you have a small head.
Great noise cancelling and the headphone is very comfortable when i put on. battrry is the best, almost 30 hours long for listening. I just need to charge it once in 4 or 5 days.
Pros: noise cancelling confortable battery
Cons: a bit heavy but that was bearable to me
Pros: Excellent noise cancelling. Excellent feature to cup hand over earphone and hear everything when needed! Very good sound Very good comfort Touch pad for volume, play/pause, answering calls Cons: Tactile nubs/buttons for power and noise cancelling are super slight it's hard to feel when your fingers are on them, or which one you're finger is on Bluetooth pairing to second/third/ etc. devices required 7 second button press (took me a while to figure that out through help, but worked just fine) Could be more interesting looking - all black and smooth not bad, but i've seen others more visually appealing. Expensive, but worth it so far in my opinion.

I wanted a good alternative to my Shure 535's when I travel. After some research I settled on the Sony's. I found the sound quality decent while streaming from a Bluetooth device. The noise canceling works well, and the touch features on the ear cup are cool once you get used to them. True test will be a cross country trip at the end of March. So far, I have no buyers remorse. They have performed as advertised.
Pros: Noise canceling. Ear cup controls.
Cons: None at this time.
Great sound and very comfortable
Pros: Sound quality feel comfortable
Cons: Price hear cups could be slightly larger
Awesome product. Based on previous reviews I decided to go with the Sony vs Bose and definitely glad I went with the Sony. Great sound and love the noise canceling function. Very happy with my purchase.
Best headphones I have ever owned. Noise canceling is like magic. The ambient feature is great and many other headphones don't have this great feature. I saved a few bucks and went with the scratch and dent. They may have well been brand new! I couldn't find one thing wrong with them. Having fun listening to songs from my youth and hearing New details for the fist time now that I have a good set of headphones.
Pros: Amazing sound, noise canceling, and ambient feature. Battery life it great too.
Cons: Hardly a con but maybe not quite as light or comfortable as the Bose. Still comfy for many hours but might get a little hot after using all day.
I compared the Sony WH-1000XMS to the Bose 35's and ultimately decided on the Sony's. Couldn't be happier with the decision! Sound quality is incredible! Also, the built in touch controls are super convenient. Add in the Google assistant, mute function by simply placing your hand over the right ear cup, and these headphones are worth every penny. I highly recommend these to anyone looking for quality Bluetooth NC headphones. The build quality is also second to none!
Pros: Construction; sound quality; Google assistant; touch controls; NC quality
Just going to say it immediately but I'm not a fan of the touch pad, it responds and works just as it should but sometimes I will stretch and will touch it with my arm pausing my music. It's annoying but not a deal breaker. The headphones themselves are absolutely amazing. The first time I paired them with my iPhone the volume was not synced for whatever reason and it seemed as if the volume on the headphones did not get loud at all. Once I swiped up to max, all was good and I haven't had that issue since. Great sound and better noise canceling. You will still hear things but it's amazing how it silenced the would around you when listening to music
Pros: Noise canceling, amazing sound. Sony quality
Cons: Can creek when around your neck, touch pad can't be disabled. Micro usb (usb type C come on!!!)
Worked great on a recent flight. Much better noise cancellation than my old first gen Bose from 11 years ago. Got a little tired of wearing them on a long flight. But battery life was great.
Pros: Excellent noise reduction
Cons: A little tight on my large head
Awesome set of headphones. The noise cancelling is killer as well as the sound quality and comfort.
Pros: Sound, noise cancelling, fit
Cons: Can get a little bit warm on your ears.
Earphones are awesome so far. I have had Bose in the past and they are very comparable. Bose needs to step up their game.
Incredible set of headphones! Glad I bought them over the Bose.
Great headphones! I purchased these to replace QC25's and could not be happier. The noise cancelling is better, love the bluetooth vs. wired, and comfort is about the same. I would say that the QC's are more comfortable but the XM2's are definitely not uncomfortable. Battery life is fantastic too.
I qualify this review in that I have not had anything to compare these headphones to except some in ear cheapies. So the first thing: OMG. Second thing: OMG. These provide a beautiful emphasis on the full sound spectrum of frequencies. I signed up with the free three month trial with iTunes and it's like listening to music all over again.
The sound quality is FANTASTIC. It is better than my Bose QC35 II. They have dense ear cups that isolate sound pretty well, even without the noise cancelling turned on. They feel much better quality that Bose. The feature where you cover the ear to hear ambient sounds is really useful. It allow you to hear people when they need to talk to you without removing the cups. I worried that it would be activated by leaning against the airplane wall or something else, but it really only responds to my hand. I really enjoyed the added functionality through using the phone app. Optimizing sound based on the atmospheric pressure, whether I have my glasses or a ballcap on, etc. was my favorite feature. I appreciated the ability to control sound direction as well. Unfortunately, I found them uncomfortable after extended sessions (2 hours or more). For that I decided to just stick with my Bose. Again, sound quality really was superior. The ancillary features (touch controls, app control) were nice to have as well.
Pros: Sound Quality Touch controls Phone app functionality Density of the ear cups
Cons: Long time wearability Can't listen while plugged in to power
The Sony WH 1000xm2 is much better than my Bose NC. They were well worth the money and will make a great present.
Pros: Noise canceling and great sound
honestly the best noise canceling headphones on the market. It's nice to be able to concentrate on the music and not what's going on around you. The big plus is they produce great sound!!
Pros: Great noise canceling technology and they sound great
The best noise canceling headphones I have experience. Good sound quality too. Better than Bose.
These headphones are very comfortable and they sound great!
These are the best wireless, noise canceling headphones I have ever used. I had Bose QC 35s, and I sold them because they just couldn't measure up. These new Sony headphones just beat the socks off the QC 35s from the standpoint of sound and features. I can't say much, however, for the Headphones Connect app that goes with it. I tried the app, but there was no comparison to the EQu app I was already using. The Sony app needs a lot of improvement. The surround effects, EQ and DSEE really just did not do much for the overall sound. Plus, if you read the fine print associated with the app, Sony wants to be able to collect more information from consumers than they should. If you are concerned about security on your devices, do not use this app. The Sony WH-1000XM2s are the best headphones out there, but I would ditch the app and stick with an equalizer like EQu.
Pros: Great sound quality Excellent noise canceling Simple controls
Cons: Headphones Connect app needs much improvement and more security

Overview: The Sony WH-1000XM2 Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones have all of the latest features in wireless headphones for the best experience in personal listening. With Digital Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Sound Control, and Touch Sensors on the earcups, the headphones make it easy to get the sound you want from your digital music files. The headphones include an audio cable for wired listening, airline audio adapter, a USB charging cable, and a zippered storage case.
Bluetooth/NFC: The 1000XM2 has Bluetooth 4.1 for wireless listening from your smartphone, tablet, or Bluetooth music player. Compatible profiles include A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, and HSP, with SBC, AAC, LDAC, aptX, and aptX HD codecs. LDAC transmits approximately three times more data than conventional Bluetooth, with a maximum transfer rate of 990 kbps for exceptional sound quality. For NFC-enabled devices, you can easily pair to the headphones by simply touching the device to the N-mark on the left earcup of the headphones.
Digital Noise Cancellation: The headphones are equipped with built-in microphones on the top of the earcup that captures outside noise and sends and equal-but-opposite cancelling signal to the unit. You'll be able to hear more of your music and less of the outside distractions. The Sony Headphones Connect app has a Noise Cancelling Optimizer that takes into account the shape of your face, whether or not you wear eyeglasses, even the atmospheric pressure, to make the noise cancelling effect even better.
Adaptive Sound Control: Sony's Adaptive Sound Control can detect your activity and adjust the sound settings to you. When traveling, you can immerse yourself in your music with the highest level of noise cancellation. If you're walking, the noise cancellation adapts so you can stay aware of your surroundings while listening to music. While waiting, such as in an airport or train station, the noise cancellation is reduced so you can hear important announcements. These settings can be customized to your personal tastes in the Sony Headphones Connect app.
Sony Headphones Connect App: The Sony Headphones Connect app gives you control over the sound of your headphones right on your smartphone or tablet. In addition to Adaptive Sound Control and Noise Cancelling Optimizer (mentioned above), the app's Sound Position Control lets you choose the direction from which you hear your music (Front, Front Right, Front Left, Rear Right, or Rear Left). You can select from available presets for the Surround VPT and Equalizer features, control your music (play/pause, skip forward/backward, fast forward/backward), and set the Clear Bass and DSEE HX (high range compensation for compressed music files) levels. The Sony Headphones Connect app is compatible with iOS devices (iOS 9.0 or later) and Android devices (Android 4.4 and up).
Touch Controls: Using the touch-sensitive panel on the outside of the right earcup, you can easily control all your music and calls. Volume is controlled with up or down swiping motions, while music/call controls utilize tapping and forward or backward swipes. The Quick Attention feature lets you instantly mute the audio by placing your hand over the touch pad so you can hear an announcement or conduct a conversation without removing your headphones.
High Resolution Audio: The headphones are compatible with Hi-Res Audio, allowing you to hear all of the subtle details of your music. They have powerful 40mm aluminum-coated Liquid Crystal Polymer diaphragms that can reproduce low bass notes and ultrasonic highs up to 40kHz. For true Hi-Res audio reproduction, the included 5' audio cable must be used in a wired connection to your Hi-Res-capable playback device.
Rechargeable Battery: The Sony WH-1000XM2 over-ear headphones are equipped with a 3.7-volt Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery to power the Bluetooth and ANC functions. The battery fully charges in approximately 4 hours via USB using the included Micro USB cable. With a 10-minute Quick Charge, you can get about 70 minutes of music playback. (See battery life estimates below in Specifications.)

Chatted with an advisor and decided that quality is worth the price. I chose the Sony because noise cancelling is quite needed for the office environment but not critical (I don't fly often). The advisor suggested in that case to purchase the Sony and get better sound. That nudged me to the Sony. I told the advisor and I will tell you that your website is excellent for one, zeroing in on the category of product and two, doing comparisons. [ Nonickname Mar 14, 2018 ]

I bought the XM2 in December and I am also disappointed with the lack of volume when listening over Bluetooth. If i connect physically with the attached cable and leave the headphones turned on, I can achieve a decent volume level, but it defeats the purpose of buying wireless headphones in the first place. [ Richard Feb 19, 2018 ]
Obviously a personal preference. However, my wife has told me to turn the volume down because it was disturbing her! These headphones seem to me to go loud enough that i am concerned about damaging my hearing if i go too loud. [ Alastair Feb 18, 2018 ]
Mine have more volume than the Bose and better sound [ Howard Feb 17, 2018 ]
It depends on the specific sound bar model and it's capabilities. Most sound bars that feature built-in Bluetooth will only receive audio sent to them from Bluetooth devices (smartphone, tablet, computer) and will not transmit wirelessly to external Bluetooth speakers or headphones.
